Jack shakes his head. Emily tugs at the edge of the china, her finger tracing the curve.
"No dessert?" she asks, and she knows the answer before he even looks up.
"I want my mom."
Makes sense. Emily can't even remember if she ever saw Jack not latched onto Haley's hand, glued to her side. But now, right now, Jack's a singular thing.
"You want your mom," Emily repeats, not a question.
There's his aunt Jess near the door, giving a polite goodbye to a trio of strangers. But she can't see his mom.
She nods, then. "Okay. We'll find your mom."
