    Summary

The officiator tapped his podium to regain control and motioned toward Ghost.

“A very noble display. Now, who do you champion for this year, Sir Ghost?”

They were expecting the same answer as every year. For Ghost to hold his gauntlet to his own breastplate without a word and nod.

    But not this year.

Thunderous through his helm, taking everyone by surprise, Ghost rounded Banshee and pointed across the arena, directly at John, and proclaimed, “I champion for John of the MacTavish clan!”

    ---

There’s a yearly tournament held every spring to showcase the strongest and most skilled knights and warriors in the lands. Filled with feats of strength, talent and cunning, all sorts are drawn to the festivities.

Among them is the renowned Ghost, a knight-errant who’s consistently won the jousting tournament for the past several years.

Always a loner, he’s fought for himself, and himself alone, but something changes this year, in the form of an intriguing meeting with a bold, Scottish warrior.

    Summary

He had always thought that Wesker was sparing with praise. He hadn’t noticed the superlatives until they dried up: Chris, you’re the best shot we have, you’re the best one for this job, you’re one of my best men.

And Chris wouldn’t be worried about it—isn’t worried about it—except that performance reviews are coming up, and he’s no longer actually sure what Wesker’s comments will look like.

One day Captain Wesker comes into the office and won't look Chris in the eye.

    Summary

There’s a teddy in Soap’s bed; a beaten-up, old brown bear. Well-loved, if the state of the fur is any indication. Ghost lets out a choked laugh, mostly at his own expense. He wishes he was there, suddenly, wishes he was by Johnny’s side as he walked through the doorway and realised that his childhood room was waiting for him like a time capsule. Wishes he got to see the embarrassed scrunch of his face, the way the tips of his ears would flush red.

Soap has a whole second life, outside of the SAS. He’s got a mother, and a poorly-decorated bedroom, and a bear. All Ghost has is a flat that will be the same it is today as it will be the day he dies, like he was never even here at all.

    *New Chapter!*

Heading to the front office he’s really starting to feel the loss of his morning coffee. He’s so tired he almost misses the clumps of mud and dirt that are starting to cover the pathway. But there’s no way he could miss a whole plot dug up. Right next to the brand new bulbs he planted yesterday a whole plot is disturbed, grass, topsoil, down to the rocky soil that lies deep under.

“I swear to Christ if those boys dug up the wrong plot-” he starts, but it dies in his chest. The actual plot isn’t very far from where he stands. He can see it from there, and he can see it neatly refilled with the green tarp covering it, waiting to be reseeded with grass. That cold discomfort sets into his stomach again, and all his reassurances melt away. Something else dug this plot up.

The headstone is old, unreadable and crooked as it sits at the maw of the hole. It’s dug sloppy and uneven, like it wasn’t even done with a tool. Like it was done with nothing more than bare hands.

John is a humble graveyard keeper. Happy, if not a bit bored. Then a grave is disturbed, a stranger appears at his house, and everything changes.
