It was the summer of 1963, his last summer before college, and Lan Zhan dreaded the weeks ahead of him.
Instead of spending the summer in any sort of sensible matter, studying or practicing or even traveling, Xichen had insisted that they spend it at the Jin country club, citing a need for shufu to need a few weeks off to relax. Lan Zhan privately agreed with Xichen on this, but not at his own expense. He was not looking forward to nearly a month of forced socializing, awkward dinners, and amateur entertainment.
He stared out the window, watching the scenery pass as they approached the country club, the greenery flashing by in a blur until the sprawling estate emerged, gaudy and ostentatious as ever. The buildings shone golden in the afternoon sun, the rooftops nearly blinding him. He closed his eyes. This was going to be a long summer.
