Summary
Marcela is a young woman from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, who left her home country to pursue the dream of a better life in Los Angeles. After years of studying, she finds herself lost when unjustly expelled from the dormitories of her university, solely because she is an immigrant and a scholarship recipient. With no other choice, the aspiring journalist moves to a neighborhood called Freeridge, which is dangerous and far from her college, but the only place she can afford without accumulating debt.
Upon arriving in the new neighborhood, Marcela faces a range of social problems, gets involved in amusing misadventures, embarks on new adventures, and forms strong bonds with people she never imagined, including the arrogant gang leader, Oscar Diaz. A strange sense of justice grows within the community she encounters. Revealing both the issues and wonders of the area, Marcela tries to improve the situation for the local population in her own way, confronting moral dilemmas that make her reconsider herself. She faces dangerous individuals for the sake of the people and her own survival.
In a short period of time, Freeridge and its inhabitants become Marcela's home without her even realizing it.
