“He doesn’t—” his breath hitches helplessly at the thought. “He doesn’t love me, June.” And, God, he’s fucking crying again.
The storm in his head rages on, his stomach sinking like a ship in its tide. Maybe Henry is exactly who Alex believes him to be: good and honest and true; maybe he’s perfect in every way Alex knows that he is and simply, plainly, doesn’t want him.
That's the worst possible answer to the questions that have become his entire being today. It sends another set of sobs hurling past his lips. The idea that all of this was real, Henry just doesn’t care that much, is sickening— debilitating— Alex doesn’t know how to face it.

Alex is hurting him, he knows he is. He knows Henry has real feelings for him and Alex feels like the scum of the Earth. The way Henry looks at him – like he can’t believe Alex is real. Alex knows he doesn’t deserve that look, yet he can’t help but feel warm from head to toe every time he is on the receiving end of it.

What. The fuck.
“Me? Philip- why?” Alex is stuttering over his words, completely gobsmacked. This was about the last thing he expected Bea to say.
Bea is staring blankly at him. He can’t read her face. What the hell is going on?
Alex gingerly takes the phone, and then Bea surprises him again by quickly leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
He stands there. He needs a second to wrap his mind around this. He’s never spoken to Philip on the phone before. He’s barely even spoken to Philip alone before. What could this possibly be about?
Alex can only think of bad answers. So he brings the phone to his ear with his guard as far up as it will go.
“Hello, Philip.”
“Alex. Happy Christmas.”
“It’s…not Christmas yet, Philip. But thanks.”
There’s a lonnnnnng silence that probably only lasts about 5 seconds. Longest 5 seconds ever.
“So what can I do for you, Philip?”
