Protect the Omega

Summary:

Jeon Jungkook is an omega, why does that matter? Because omega are a rarity. They're at such high risk few make it to pack formation these days. What with the territory wars, strays, violence and general dislike against them. They have it rough. And Jungkook is no exception. It's a new school year and FINALLY some alphas step up to protecting him just as a new, much more dangerous pack moves into town.

Chapter 1: Sweet little omega. Sweeter little alphas?

Summary:

Jungkook is an omega that gets a lot of unwanted attention, after healing from an attack from two alphas in his university he discovers two NEW alpha that instantly protect him, caring for him in a way he was sure alphas were incapable of. Omegas were a rarity at the best of times let alone when concentrated onto a single university campus. Why else would most adult packs be predominantly alphas and betas for many years until securing a single omega? Some packs may have blessed to be able to include two omega if they were lucky. Being an omega was difficult and dangerous, risks of abuse, assault, violence and prejudice were always an issue even in school settings. Omega were inferior and that was just a fact. It was getting better, or rather, there was more of an effort to protect an endangered sub-species like omegas.

Jungkook was put on the university watch list, eight attacks in two weeks had left him weak and bruised. He had left classes for a little while under the careful watch of his tutors that insisted ‘class can wait, go heal’. It wasn’t until Jungkook’s first dance class that he decided to leave the safety of the omega dorms and take the short stroll onto campus with his gym bag thrown over his shoulder and a cautious tension in every step. Campus had started to feel unsafe, usually the security that patrolled for lone omega were good at keeping things in order. Jungkook could only blame his lingering scent sweetened by post-heat bliss and his new attentiveness to his looks. He had been told by a beta from his vocal training classes that if he wanted a pack he had to LOOK like he wanted one. The beta didn’t warn him looking good was some kind of calling card to every possessive, entitled alpha to try to pin him to any and every surface on campus. He rubbed his nape at the thought of the canines that had once tried to press him to a toilet cubicle door during one of the more recent attacks.

He could feel the eyes following him, could see the way some of the other omega on campus lowered their heads slowly in greeting, a silent reassurance or perhaps they just knew he was getting hell this past couple of weeks and felt bad for him. Either way it did somehow ease the discomfort of facing his first day back on his own. Jungkook found himself oddly early, almost uncharacteristically so, as he changed into his dance kit of baggy grey sweats and a loose fitting white shirt. The dance hall was empty for a moment as he warmed up before a couple of beta wandered in, regarding him cautiously before turning away to chatter idly between their stretches. Jungkook swore he saw them shudder when they met his gaze. It wasn’t until the start of class when it seemed every single alpha was gravitating closer that he realised what that shudder was, Jungkook noted the beta and their sudden fear of the back of the room where he was. The room was filled with the scent of the alphas, their silent claims that stuck to his clothes and hair like glitter that took weeks to wash away. God Jungkook hated glitter almost as much as he hated these alpha, he assumed he hated anything clingy and made purely for aesthetic purposes. He wanted to feel bad for feeling that but of course, a pissed off omega can only smirk at their own antipathy.

“Hobi-hyung,” an alpha whined somewhere to the side, a sound that made Jungkook’s heart jump and ears perk until the voice was hushed.
”I know, Jiminie…I know. Grab the strawberries, we’ll drink together,” another voice urged tenderly, soft and reassuring in the way the voice hitched sweetly. It was a fond sound that Jungkook had never heard between alpha before.
”Ok, let’s stop for ten and cool off!” the tutor barked and most of the students fell to the floor panting but one of them stepped closer, a cautious hand held out with a bottle of water.
”Need a bottle? You don’t seem to have one on you,” the alpha offered and Jungkook froze, patting down his pockets with a wince.
”Shit…I forgot-”
”It’s ok, take this one. We haven’t opened it, don’t worry,” the alpha urged anxiously when the omega froze with his fingers stretched out. That was always a concern, alpha loved using drinks to spike. An omega, especially around heat, can drink litres of water so it was easy to slip something into some water or honey tea. The hesitation didn’t last long as Jungkook caught the bottle, testing the cap that resisted the first twist of his wrist. It shouldn’t have but it made him excited. An alpha that didn’t hand him a drugged bottle at the first chance.
”Poor omega…having to watch every damn drink of water. Here let me…it has a little peel lock thing,” he chuckled and the alpha shifted his long hands over Jungkook’s, tugging at a small plastic tab that peeled free and with a soft click the alpha pulled the cap free.
”I…I could do that,” Jungkook grumbled, eyeing the alpha carefully as he beamed back shyly.”
”I…I know. Sorry…it’s a habit,” he giggled coyly when a bottle was slipped into his open hand and a smaller alpha beamed back eagerly. It didn’t take long to figure out what the alpha had meant as he uncapped the new bottle and handed it to the small alpha with a fond chuckle, hand ruffling the dark mass of hair thoughtfully.
”Two…alphas?”
”Oh right…I’m Hoseok, or Hobi…or Hope. Your preference really. I’m a dance and production major,” the taller alpha beamed proudly, pressing his hair back from his face.
”Jimin…contemporary dance and vocal major,” the smaller squeaked, cheeks rising with a pink tint.
”Oh…ah…Jungkook…vocal and hip-hop dance major…but…I do a bit of everything,” the omega hummed carefully.
”Wow…so we all have quite a bit in common. Ever thought of producing?” Hoseok questioned, downing his water around a garbled hum of interest that Jimin mirrored quietly, gauging the taller omega with an intense curiosity that made his wide puppy-like eyes shine.
”I try sometimes if I have a free period. I like composition and music production but it’s…a bit…alpha heavy,” he grumbled but instantly relaxed when he realised they understood, they nodded and tutted worriedly as if the idea had crossed their mind too. It wasn’t safe for an omega and that just wasn’t fair.
”Everyone should be able to try it…omega, beta or alpha. It’s a shame they don’t do separate classes so it’s SAFE,” Hobi gritted in annoyance.
”I guess there’d be no integrating if that was the case. We wouldn’t have a reason to meet if there were no classes together,” the doe-eyed omega shrugged passively, catching it before it could come off as rude.
”s-sorry…it’s a habit,” he sighed and rolled his shoulders as if the tension there was to blame for the off-handed gesture that the two alphas waved off with chuckles of their own.
”hey, don’t worry. It’s no big deal. Loosen up, Kookie we don’t bite…we really don’t,” Hoseok pressed with narrowed eyes full of sincerity.
”Hey Jungkookie…do you have any classes after this?” Jimin added after his friend fell into silence. Jungkook paused to consider before nodding slowly.
”I have vocal lessons and then a two hour break before cinematography,” he huffed and the two alphas nodded again as if they had one mind.
”Mind if we walk you there? The other alpha here are giving you looks…we’d feel better if you have someone trustworthy walk you there,” Hoseok frowned when Jungkook glanced back behind his back and sure enough there were four others watching them with dark stares and bared teeth.
”I…yes please. We have vocal together anyway,” he beamed to Jimin who grinned back with a sure nod.
”I have a lot of friends that do vocals too. You can meet a few more of our pack! You’ll like them. Jinnie-hyung really likes food and he’s a bit of a domestic alpha…likes cleaning and babying the younger members of the pack. Then there’s me and Tae-Tae who are 95 liners. Tae is a softy, he likes fashion and making friends so he’ll keep an eye on you if you ever need someone to walk with to class. We have two others but…they do production-”
”You have that last with us then…I can introduce you to them…” Hoseok added before pausing.
”Crap…we have that last. I should call Joonie…” he sighed when Jimin tensed and lowered his head slowly, almost submissively if Jungkook didn’t know better.
”Yeh…call him while we’re in singing…”
”And Yoongi-hyung…”
”Yeh,” Jimin mumbled and rubbed the back of his neck shyly.
”it’ll be fine, we promised them-”
”I know…I know. I’ll send a text, let them know I’m calling for an actual reason. They’ll be in the studios no doubt,” the older of the two grumbled knowingly, pulling his phone from his hand to text with one hand while the other tapped at Jimin’s shoulder without much thought.
”You two ARE alphas right?” Jungkook pressed in confusion after Jimin had shifted to press himself completely into Hoseok’s personal space.
”of course we are,” Jimin huffed and his cheeks puffed out childishly.
”In the same pack?” Jungkook added which was met with two more nods but this time Hoseok was observing him wearily.
”Is there something wrong, Jungkook? Does that worry you? Is this some omega fear?” he frowned and although his choice of words had Jungkook curling in on himself at the thought of his distrust and anxiety being caught out that easily it seemed that the new alpha really wanted to understand where that worry came from. After all…alphas jobs were to heed these warning signs and protect omega. Not like that stopped the majority of them on campus.
“n-no…it’s ok. I’m not worried,” he grumbled awkwardly, waving the alpha off with another passive statement falling still in his chest when the group was called back to practise.

Sure to their word Jimin and Hoseok waited for him outside of the omega changing rooms, their scent was light and passive to avoid scaring off the other omega that wandered out of the room. Jungkook had to admire their fore-thought.
”Sorry for the wait…thought…probably best to shower?” he mumbled awkwardly, ruffling the slight dampness in his hair away. He had considered it his duty, to be honest. Jimin and Hoseok had been kind enough to try to protect him from the other alphas so the least he could do was make their job EASIER. Sweat was an omega’s worst enemy in the sense since it pretty much mixed with their scent and clung, again, almost like glitter. Jungkook winced. Was his gay showing too much? He had been referencing his scent as glitter for far too long now. If anyone asked he would swear by it though because that’s exactly what scent was. It clung. It settled in the air, on clothes and skin until it was everywhere. You couldn’t wash it out, just had to wait for the intensity to lighten through scenting.

“To singing!” Jimin grinned, arm raised in triumph as he tugged Hoseok along and for a moment reached out for Jungkook but drew away long before the omega could even make a decision on what to do. It was too early, he could understand that. Even good alphas knew they had limits and that was a good thing. For all he knew he could have put his hand in that little paw of a palm and got snapped up the moment their scents mixed.
”Hey…Jungkook…” Hoseok seemed to have been subdued in the hour they hadn’t spoken. Had another alpha said something to him? He didn’t seem roughed up rather than cautious, hopeful even.
”Yeh, hyung?” Jungkook beamed easily, voice light. Hoseok deserved some reassurance too and whatever was bothering him seemed serious. It had the opposite effect, Hobi stumbled, startling with wide eyes and a slack jaw.
”ah…s-sorry! I…alpha? Is that better? I just thought since you weren’t-”
”Hey, shh,” the older alpha chuckled, catching Jungkook’s cheeks with his warm palms and shushed sweetly again until the omega relaxed into his touch.
”Shush, little omega. You’re ok. You can call us hyung…you call us whatever you’re comfortable with, yeh?” he urged calmly and raised Jungkook’s head in his hands to meet wide eyes filled with warmth and tenderness.
”Such a cute omega…you can call us hyung…but…I thought I should warn you,” Hobi began slowly, calculating Jungkook’s every move as if he was trying to read his mind. The moment Jungkook started getting fussy with worry, squirming between the hands on his skin Hobi was quick to soothe him again, nose pressed to his to press his comforting scent there.
”Hey…it’s ok. It’s ok. Our pack leader, that’s all…he’s in production too and asked to meet you. He wants to help keep you safe. He’s offering a pack-system to keep you safe,” he pressed quickly but carefully. He couldn’t stay too long holding onto the omega before they began to scent each other, and that’s not what he wanted. He just wanted to calm the younger one down enough to get some sense out of him.
”L-leader?”
”It’s ok, he’s nice. He really is. I told him you’re getting looks from the others. Most omega by this point have a substitute pack to keep them safe…why don’t you?” he frowned wearily until Jungkook pressed his hands over his shakily. He tried to peel them from his skin, pining the warmth that quickly dispersed when the hands were no longer on him. He had to decide and that choice was warmth and comfort or pride. A tough choice to make by Jungkook’s standards. Before he could pull the long fingers back onto his cheeks there was a huff from behind, something caught in a growl that had the three of them turning anxiously.
”Joonie-hyung!” Jimin squealed, folding himself up against the new alpha who had a scent thicker than glue and GOD Jungkook was going to stink by the time he got home.
