Work Text:

‘We still haven’t gone on our first date yet-’

Dazai cut into the comfortable silence they had been sharing for a while now, walking side by side through the peaceful park alley. The words were rushed and he blurted them out like an awkward teenager. Atsushi sent him a surprised stare, completely taken aback by his offbeat behavior.

‘Weren’t we at the cutest cat cafe just a week ago? And last Saturday we’ve ordered three take outs in one go, so why would you say that-’

‘But it doesn’t count at all, Atsushi-kun! You know exactly what I mean!’ the man cried out in despair, his heated gesticulation making their joined hands swing around like crazy. The boy raised his eyebrows in amusement, his thumb mechanically rubbing small circles on the back of his boyfriend’s palm to calm him down a bit.

‘Do I, though? I’m afraid you’re mistaking me for some kind of a psychic.’

Dazai huffed in exasperation. ‘I’m trying to open up about my emotional needs here, you absolute beast. Try pointing out my repressed feelings once again, and I swear…’

‘Gosh, you’re such a drama queen,’ Atsushi giggled. The warmth of an early-spring sun had washed all over him, lessening the usual anxiety and making him a bit air-headed. There was not a thing that would irritate him at the moment, luckily for a certain man skilled in that area.

‘Me, dramatic? I’m just trying to be an involved and caring partner! What a hurtful-’

A gentle kiss brushing on his knuckles made him stop the rant halfway. Affection always had a fascinating impact on Dazai- gestures as simple as fond touches or tender words seemed to shut him off entirely, but yet he was leaning into the warmth like a lost puppy every time. Atsushi always found it adorable.

‘So, what kind of date do you have in mind, my involved and caring partner? I’m sorry, you have to be more specific.’

The man hummed in reflection, but he must have had an answer ready since the beginning of this conversation, since there already was a playful smirk plastered to his mouth.

‘Just the two of us, the soft candlelight illuminating the hall of the best restaurant in Yokohama, a beautiful waitress serving mouth-watering dishes… Rose petals spread everywhere obliviously, matching the delicious blush on your face. Also the violin playing in the background, that is a must. You simply can’t call an evening a date without rose petals and violin.’

‘Okay, first of all, we are both broke as hell, so I guess our first date will have to wait till the day we retire,’ Atsushi mused. Then, all of sudden, his soft smile turned into a deep frown. ‘Also, why does the waitress have to be beautiful?’

‘… that was just a poetic picture, Atsushi-kun. No need to be jealous over it.’

‘I really hope so!’ beamed the boy, a cheerful smile back on his face. ‘So how often do you like to picture pretty waitresses in your head, Dazai-san?’

The man gaped at him, not sure whether that was a joke or a threat.

‘I don’t like where this is heading at all. Are you sure I'm the drama queen in this relationship?’

‘Absolutely sure. I, on contrary, am just an involved and caring partner.’

Dazai didn’t get a chance to retort with a witty remark. Actually, he wasn’t able to answer at all- somehow, Atsushi’s lips found their way to his own, a small peck turning into a breath-taking kiss, and well-

- he was a man with simple priorities, so the drama had to wait for a better moment.
