Kira laughed to herself. With all the things that could happen, this was the last thing she would have thought of. Apparently, there had been some problems with the universal translator, and the alien diplomats thought the Bajoran delegation was composed of major Kira Nerys… and her wife. When they arrived on the planet, it was already too late to correct the mistake, so she had to share a bed with Dax for the whole week; not that she minded: they both trusted each other, and they had no problem with staying close together. Plus, when she was in the Resistance, people often slept next to each other to try and remain warm during the cold winter months, so she was used to it. And Dax, well, she seemed even more amused than her at the idea of pretending that they were a couple, taking every occasion she had to tease her about it.
Kira couldn’t help but wonder for a moment what it would be like, having a real relationship with Dax; but then, she didn’t even know if Jadzia liked her that way. She quickly shook the thought away and climbed into bed. The bed itself was quite small, so she turned around to face away from her friend and give her at least some privacy; Dax did the same.
---
Kira woke up in the middle of the night to find Dax’s arms gently hugging her. She thought about it for a moment, still sleepy and confused. Did they fall asleep like this? No, she was pretty sure Dax was facing the other way before. She probably turned around in her sleep, that’s all.
Kira savored the moment, unsure if she should move, afraid she’d wake her up. Dax moved closer, her body now pressed against her back. Her leg brushed against Kira’s bare skin, sending a shiver down her spine (and it wasn’t only because of the Trill’s low body temperature). Kira’s head was leaning on her friend’s chest; she could feel her breath, slow, calm, relaxed. Dax seemed even taller, almost engulfing her. Kira felt safe in her arms, safe for the first time in a long time; nothing could hurt her with Dax protecting her. It was… it was just so nice. She had never met anybody like Dax, and now she just… just wanted to stay there, with her, and never let her go; Jadzia was everything she could dream of, and more. Maybe it was a dream. Maybe she was still asleep, and Jadzia was on the other side of the bed, distant from her, unreachable. Or maybe Jadzia herself was asleep, dreaming about being with someone else; after all, Kira was sure she would never have done this if she was awake: they were friends, nothing more.
Kira pulled away, reaching for the edge of the bed, confused, unsure about what was real and what wasn’t. She tried to be as gentle as she could, not wanting to wake her up; Jadzia woke up anyway, and pulled herself closer, closing again the gap between them.
Nerys heard her talking, whispering something in her ear; without their commbadges, the only thing she understood was her name. She turned around and saw her beautiful blue eyes shine in the dimly illuminated room, staring into her soul.
She tried to say something to her, forgetting that Jadzia didn’t know pretty much any Bajoran.
Jadzia tentatively wrapped her arm around her back, unsure if Nerys had understood what she had told her before, trying to tell her to come closer again. She had had feelings for Nerys for months now, but she didn’t know Nerys felt the same or what to do now; Nerys understood her and nodded to tell her to keep going. Jadzia moved her arm slowly towards Nerys’s waist, still ready to back off at the first sign that she was uncomfortable with what they were doing; Nerys timidly did the same, putting her hand on the back of Jadzia’s head, still not able to convince herself that Jadzia really liked her. Jadzia, seeing her hesitation, smiled at her, reassuring her that everything was alright; Nerys, now more confident than before, started going down her neck, tracing her spots one by one, surprised that she could feel them so clearly under her fingers. An old Earth song she had heard a few days before came to her mind while she realized how long she had wanted to do this, even if she could never admit it to herself.
We always dreamed about this better life, this better life
We always felt it coming all along, yeah all along
We've got the keys to open paradise, yeah paradise
As she followed them all the way down, she finally found the courage to tell Jadzia what was now so clear in her mind:
- “I love you, Jadzia”
Oh winter melts under the summer skies, the summer skies
The seasons change, our hearts will stay the same, yeah stay the same
We got that burning feeling, start a fire, start a fire
This time, Jadzia understood her: she moved forwards, slowly, until their lips finally touched, parting them with her tongue. She was a great kisser, unsurprisingly, and Nerys didn’t hold back, putting all her passion into it, finally able to express her love.
With a love this deep
We don't need no sleep
And it feels like...
We could do this all night
