Chapter 1: each night before you go to bed, my baby

Chapter Text

The past twenty-four hours had felt like a fever dream for Earl Keese.

He thought they were, until he woke up abruptly in his car, with his neighbors on both sides. The neighbors that had caused him a living hell for a night. A night where he got zero sleep. He wanted to go back to sleep , but gave up after realizing how bumpy the road was.

Jeez, these are rough roads, He thought to himself as he straightened up and opened up his eyes

Vic was in the seat to his left, driving the car, humming a tune to himself. It was the quietest Earl had ever heard him be. Earl didn't know how to feel about it. Vic felt…almost tolerable for once? Earl savored the few seconds of blissful, odd silence, until Earl caught Vic's eye.

"Good afternoon, neighbor!" Vic said, giving him a toothy grin and squeezing Earl's shoulder.

Earl felt a bit flustered, but then quickly covered up his face. "Oh, hi Vic," He muttered, trying not to show the other man his expression.

"Hey, Earl."

He then felt an arm snake across his chest. He turned to see Ramona, sitting on his right. She gave him a small smile and kissed his cheek making him blush.

"How'd you sleep sweetheart?" She murmured, face mere inches away from his.

Earl blushed harder at her action, taking a few seconds to pull himself together best he could.

"Oh, um, I slept well, thank you for asking." He muttered, pulling away from her.

She gave him a flirty smile then giggled, "Oh stop being so anxious Earl, you're with friends now."

"Yeah," Vic butted in, "C'mon buddy, relax. This is the most fun you've had in years!"

Earl did agree with Vic's statement, but it was hard to not be a bit anxious when you've abandoned your family and burned your house down.

"Where are we going?" Earl asked, trying to distract himself from his worries.

Vic shrugged. "Like I told you earlier pal, I'm just driving, you tell me."

"Ok well where are we now?"

"I think we're somewhere in Ohio." Vic said, sounding uncertain.

Oh great,Ohio.

Earl stared straight ahead onto the road. The sun was lowering in the sky, and it seemed to be around late afternoon. He still had plenty of time to think of a plan for the day.

Earl laid back in his seat, Vic was right, he needed to relax. He sat there and stared out the window, and let his thoughts take over his mind for a bit. For around maybe an hour or so he sat there with his daydream scenarios of the future. He then heard something rustling that snapped him back to reality.

Next to him, he noticed Ramona was searching through the glovebox, picking up individual tapes and putting them back in.

"Uh, Ramona?"

"Oh I'm just looking for some music," She said nonchalantly, still searching. "Just trying to see if you have any decent tunes."

"Oh um, well what artists do you like?" Earl asked her. "I do have a lot of tapes in there, there's bound to be something you like."

Maybe I could impress her with my music taste, He considered, but then scrapped it.

Ramona gave it a thought, putting her hand on her chin, then spoke. "Well I do like Led Zeppelin, but I want to know what you like, this is your car y'know."

She had a slight seductiveness in her voice that made Earl a bit flustered. He cleared his throat

"I uh, like The Mamas and the Papas, though I'm not sure if I still have their tape."

Ramona nodded and then started digging through the tapes, and in a blink of an eye she had a Deliver tape in her hands.

Earl's eyes instantly brightened at the sight. " Oh my god,I haven't seen that tape in ages, how'd you find it?"

"I dunno," She said playfully. "I just wanted to see your cute little face brightened." She gave him a soft smile.

Earl blushed and quickly regained himself "Oh uh, thank you!"

From his other side he heard Vic chuckle at his reaction. Earl huffed. Ramona giggled with Vic and gently put the tape in.

Earl slumped down in his seat. Am I really gonna spend the rest of my life with these people? He thought to himself.

Dedicated to the one I love, started playing, and soon he felt his frustration melt away as he heard the soothing voice in his ear. That was his favorite band for a reason.

Outside the sun was beginning to set, and the sky was turning a deep orange. Earl felt engulfed by it and its warmth.

Earl felt his eyes begin to close and he didn't try to fight it.He was still tired after the night he had. He felt both Vic and Ramona's arms around his shoulders,it was comforting. Like home. Slowly he was overcome by sleep, the world around him fading into a blissful silence.

Chapter Text

"Earl, Earl wake up!"

Earl jolted awake in a cold sweat, startled by the sudden words. He looked around the dark car, panting.

"What's going on?!" He yelped, half asleep.

"Jesus, buddy," Vic snorted."Calm down, we're just getting dinner. Come on out when you're ready pal." Vic said, patting Earl on the back.

Earl sighed in relief and relaxed. He got out of the car and headed towards Vic and Ramona, who were standing a few feet away.

It was dark outside, with the moon slowly rising in the sky. It must have been around eleven. They were near a small diner, with a faded sign advertising it's food above it's entrance. There was a dull OPEN sign, flickering on and off. Beggars can't be choosers.

The group entered the building and Vic went up to the worker behind the counter, asking about the food. Earl and Ramona went to go find a seat

They sat down and soon Vic joined them, sitting across from them.

"They got burgers, chicken, grilled cheese, you know the basics." Vic said, pulling out a cigar and putting it in his mouth. "Whaddya want Earl?"

Earl shrugged. "I mean, I guess maybe a burger, and a small coke, nothing much. What do you want, Ramona?"

"Oh I'm not really that hungry," She said quietly, inspecting a packet of sugar.

"Are you sure? You haven't eaten all day!" Earl said, concerned about her.
Ramona gave him a small smile.

"It's cute how much you care about me." She said, leaning on him in their shared seat. Earl felt flustered and started sweating a bit. Why is she so good at making me blush?

Vic called over the waiter and gave them the order. Once the waiter left, Vic finished his cigar and got up.

"Where're you going?" Earl asked, slightly suspicious of the taller man's antics.

"I'm just going to check the car, be sure it's in good shape that's all."

Earl raised his eyebrow. He knew Vic was lying, but he was too tired and hungry to start an argument.

Vic left the small diner and Earl sat in his seat, waiting for his food. After a minute, Ramona had gotten up from her seat as well.

"Oh I'm just going to the bathroom," She said, before he could say anything. Ramona left him.

And he was alone.

Soon the waiter had brought his food along with the rest. He started digging into his food, slowly chewing. He looked out the window next to him, trying to see where Vic was. But it was dark and he couldn't see anything.

There was an odd vibe in the diner, and it made Earl shiver. It was silent, there wasn't even any music playing, only the quiet hum of the AC.

CRACK!

Earl whipped around to the window to see what had made that noise. He frantically looked around, heart racing, trying to see what it was. Soon he saw a pair of glowing eyes in the darkness that stared at him. Earl felt cold.

The eyes were only there for a moment then vanished as fast as they appeared. Earl turned away from the window and nervously sipped his drink.

Did I just hallucinate that? He thought, trying to rationalize his experience.

Neither Ramona nor Vic had returned and Earl's paranoia was increasing.

Did they abandon me?

He felt sick to his stomach and couldn't eat any more of his food. He turned to the window again, trying to find any sign of Vic yet again, but to no avail.

He sighed and rested his head on the window. He had slept for a few hours, but he was still extremely tired. His eyes fluttered shut and he tried to nap.

AAAARRRRAAAAH!!

Earl instantly awoke and freaked out at the noise, then freaked out at the icy-blue eyes staring right in front of him.

"JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!" Earl yelled as he fell over in his seat, hitting his back on the leather.

He heard giggling and he looked up and saw Ramona standing over him, smirking.

"Oh you poor baby." She said, trying not to lose her composure.

Earl was breathing heavily and his heart was racing.

Of course this is why they left, to fuck with me.

Earl straightened up, trying to control his shaking hands. Vic reentered the diner and gave a hearty laugh.

"Aw, you're so cute when you're asleep."

Earl got up and went to face Vic, fuming.

"YOU LUNATIC! DID YOU DO THIS FOR YOUR SICK PLEASURE?" He roared at the taller man.

As he yelled at Vic, the poor minimum wage employee took a long drag of their cigarette. Poor bastard doesn't get paid enough for this.

Vic gave him a small smirk.

"No actually, I saw something familiar outside and went to go find it. Took me a bit. When I came back, I saw you and wanted to have a bit of fun."

Earl turned his head to the side.

"What were you looking for? Did you find it?"

Vic moved to the side and Earl got a full view of what Vic had been looking for.

It was Baby.

Earl couldn't believe his eyes. How did Baby find us here?

"Can you believe it?" Vic laughed. "He found us here! He's got the nose of a bloodhound!"

Baby sat there, panting, seeming very happy to have found his owners. Earl didn't know how to feel. He hated dogs, he always had, and he was hoping that Baby wouldn't come back. But he can never win, can he?

Vic grabbed his food and beckoned at Earl to leave with him. Earl knew damn well neither of them had money, so he quietly followed, not saying a word.

The poor employee thought they hallucinated the whole thing. The poor guy hadn't gotten good sleep in a week. They didn't get paid enough for this, so they let the trio and dog go.

As Earl got back into the car, he saw Vic open the backdoor to let Baby into the back.

"Are we really bringing the dog?" Earl complained, wrinkling his nose at the smell of the dog's breath.

Vic looked offended.

"Baby's part of the family Earl! He's been part of this family longer than you have!"

Earl rolled his eyes, but then comprehended what Vic had said.

Family?

Ramona had gotten into the car and Vic started it, Driving away from the diner and into the night.

And Earl felt oddly safe.
