A Kingdom's Light

Summary:

Tommy didn't know why he never showed anyone the brooch. It wasn't even all that important. Just a brooch with an emblem of Atlalune as well as all he had left of the woman that brought him to the orphanage. He never even showed it to Tubbo, his best friend in the whole world, or Eret, the one who helped him realize he is trans. He just knew that he wanted to keep it hidden. He didn't know that when he finally did show the brooch it would lead to his whole world would be flipped upside down.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Summary:

I have officially edited this chapter! Not too much has changed if you don't want to reread though!

Chapter Text

Azaria, Atlalune
January 6th

There wasn’t any warning. No clouds, no rain, like you usually read about in books when something horrible is about to happen. Just a clear sunny sky with the sounds of children laughing and playing outside and the smell of baked goods that filled the air. The people didn’t expect their kingdom to be attacked that day. The people didn’t expect to lose a princess that day. They didn’t expect that a family would be broken apart that night.

The eerily glowing moon was high in the sky when the woman began screeching. When the king found his wife in their study, she was struggling to push away a shadowed man. Everything moved swiftly after that. The king killed the assassin, but more came. The king’s personal guard pulled the king and queen away from the intruders and sent the other knights to get the princes and young princess.

But what the king and queen didn’t know was that one of those knights that went to save their children did not make it to the nursery of the princess. Rather, they were murdered in the corridor of the room. The other guards did make it to the twin prince’s bedroom and followed protocol to get them out of the castle and to the safe house away from the city. No one from the royal family realized that would be the last day they would see their princess for a very long time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the other side of the castle, a knight heard the wails of the young princess, and rushed to protect her. When she got to the princess’ rooms, she immediately saw the princess being held by one of the intruders. The knight ran into the room and, using the element of surprise and her power of wind-control, swept the trespasser off of their feet and grabbed the baby along with the blankets around her. She then quickly darted out of the room – hoping to get the young child to safety, although not before the man slashed across the stomach, ripping it open. She scurried through the long halls of the palace, looking for a way out.
It wasn’t long before the knight found an archway leading towards the stables. Sweeping a look behind her to make sure she wasn’t followed, she dashed through the large wooden doors and hurried to the stables. The knight unlocked one of the stalls, got onto the chestnut horse and galloped away from the flaming castle and the city.
As she traveled, she knew that she would not make it through the night. Her wound was considerably bleeding, and she was already weak from running around the huge palace. As she traveled, she knew that the princess needed to be hidden away where no one could find her. Looking down at the babe, she unwrapped the child until only the plainest blanket was left, securing it with her own knight’s brooch. The brooch had been given to her recently to show her promotion to the head of the personal guard of the princess. The knight hoped that it would lead the princess back to her family once it was safe.
She continued traveling, trying to find a safe place to leave the child. The knight didn’t know how long she was traveling for before she saw a building in the distance. The knight turned the horse towards the building and started moving towards it. Once the knight got close enough to the building, she saw a lake behind the large house, reflecting the moonlight.
The knight reached the steps of the wooden house, stumbled off the horse with the baby in her arms, and banged on the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ms. Clara woke in the early morning to someone banging on the front door. She quickly grabbed her dressing gown and rushed downstairs. The matron didn’t know what she was expecting when she opened the door, but it was definitely not a near-dead woman in armour holding a baby girl to her chest with a horse wandering around in the background.

“Her name… Is… Tabitha,” the knight told the matron, the last action in her plan to keep the princess hidden.

Fifteen Years Later
Little Rock Orphanage, Atlalune
January 4th

“Thomas! Get up!” Ms. Clara, the matron of Little Rock Orphanage, shouted up the stairs from the kitchen. “You and Tobias need to take care of the garden.” The blonde avian groaned and turned over to look at the blank ceiling. He pulled back his bedcovers and pushed himself up.

“I’m up, Ms. Clara!” Tommy yelled back. He ran over to the bathroom and quickly had a shower, shoving on a white shirt with slits in the back for his wings and some brown pants. Before hurrying down the stairs, he quickly snatched up the brooch he had been left with as a child, clipping it to the inside of his pocket. Once downstairs, Tommy looked over the usual breakfast options and decided on some toast and scrambled eggs. He then brought his plate over to a goat-hybrid with shaggy brown hair.

“Hi Tommy!” the brunette exclaimed.

“Hi Tubbo,” Tommy replied.

“Did you hear we get to go out to the garden today! I can’t wait to take care of the flowers and see the honeybees! Did you know that honeybees never sleep? And that honeybee queens lay around-” Throughout his rant, Tubbo hadn’t heard Tommy calling his name.

“TUBBO! I don’t need to hear about the bees!” Tommy snapped.

“Oh. Well, did you hear that Eret is coming back for your birthday? They should be here sometime tomorrow,” the brunette stated.

“Really? I can’t wait!” Tommy gushed. Eret had been the one to help him through his identity crisis. Back then, he didn’t know anything about gender identity or how to deal with it. Eret had helped Tommy realize he was trans and helped him get binders and figure out how to bind safely. They had also helped the blonde with his new name, changing it from Tabitha to Thomas, although only the matron called him Thomas, as he preferred to be called Tommy.

Tommy and Tubbo saw Eret as their older sibling and wanted to go live with them once they both turned 16 and got their Magiks. Tubbo had already turned 16 on December 23rd and got Earth-based Creation, he could create/grow plants. While Tommy would technically turn 16 in a few days time - as that was when he was dropped off at the orphanage, however he probably wouldn’t get his powers until he actually turned 16.

Everyone in the world had a power. Magiks were based somewhat off your personality, but mainly on your lineage. It was also affected by the hybrid parts of people therefore Magik usually went hand in hand with a person’s hybrid abilities. Since everyone, hybrid or not, had Magiks, it was decided by the ancestors of this world that there would be four main categories a power could be sorted into. These categories did not affect anything in a person’s life except for the fact it helped people sort the Magiks and find information about their power quicker. These four categories are fire, earth, water, and air. As mentioned before, some people could be hybrids. There are three types of hybrids: passive, hostile, and neutral.

“Do you think Niki is coming as well?” Tommy continued. Niki was Eret’s friend who lived in the capital of Emberly - Blaizon - and had helped Eret get settled in and get a job at the local library.

“Probably not. I think it’s the busy season at the bakery; she probably won’t be having any time off,” Tubbo replied. Niki had come to visit Tommy and Tubbo a few times before with Eret and the teens were fast to call her their older sister.

“Aw thats too bad, I would have liked to see her. But I guess we’ll see her soon,” Tommy sighed.

“Yeah, it’s not like we won’t see her more often soon!” Tubbo said enthusiastically, picking up his plate and putting it in the washing bin. Tommy followed and set his empty plate down after Tubbo’s.

“Come on. Let’s go out to the garden,” the blonde said. The duo made their way out to the small garden behind the orphanage. They grabbed tools from the garden shed and started to work.

The Wastes, the Nether
January 4th

In another dimension, a Wither-hybrid awoke gasping for their breath. Their white eyes darted around the hotel room they had rented for the night, although they didn’t see any of it, still caught up in the vision they had.

“I-i need to ge-et to Tom-my and Tu-ubbo,” the person whispered to the stifling air of the Nether.

Notes:

I realized in the middle of writing this chapter that I wrote Tommy and Tubbo as orphans and Technoblade hates orphans. Oh well, another thing for me to figure out.

Hope you liked the cliffhanger!

Chapter 3: Chapter Two

Summary:

We finally get to see Eret and start the adventure!

Chapter Text

Two Days Later
Little Rock Orphanage, Atlalune
January 6th

“Tommmyyyyyy!!! Wake up!!” Tubbo shouted, jumping on Tommy’s bed.

“Shit Tubbo! Why are you waking me up this early?!” Tommy exclaimed, shooting up in his bed, almost hitting Tubbo in the nose.

“Don’t you remember? Eret’s arriving today!”

“Why didn’t you say that earlier! You should’ve woken me up earlier! I don’t have time to get ready!” said Tommy, shoving Tubbo off of him and quickly grabbing clothes to put on, rushed into the bathroom.

“I did just now Tommy! You still have a few hours until they gets here, probably,” Tubbo sighed, leaning back on the bed.

Tommy rushed back into the room just as a call from downstairs came, “Thomas, Tobias, there’s someone here for you both!” Tubbo and Tommy both looked at each other and then ran down the stairs and outside.

“ERET!!” the two boys shouted as they jumped on the Wither-hybrid who was just grabbing their bags off of his white and black spotted horse. Eret was hiding their exhaustion from the journey behind their bright smile and sunglasses. They chuckled as the boys shoved them against the wall of the stable with their hug.

“Tommy! Tubbo! I’ve missed you both so much. How are you both? Excited for tomorrow Tommy?” Eret laughed. They pushed them both back, “Look at you both, you’ve grown so much since last time I saw you!”

“Eh. I’m not too excited about it. More about the fact that we can finally leave. It’s not like I’m gonna get my Magik or anything, it’s just another day,” Tommy sighed.

“Hey, it’s not just another day, it’s when you came here. We never would have met if you weren’t here,” Eret said, ruffling Tommy’s hair.

“HEY!!” shouted Tommy, shoving the hand away from his hair.

“Yeah, Tommy! Just cause you probably won’t get your Magik doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate!” Tubbo chided.

“I guess… I mean if you two want too. It’s not like anyone else will care about it” Tommy sighed, thinking about the other kids at the orphanage. Other than Tubbo and Eret, the kids either ignored or bullied him because of his outgoing personality. He was still surprised some days that those two still wanted to be friends with him.

“Tommy…” sighed Eret, starting to say something more before Tommy cut them off.

“Leave it,” he said harshly. Eret decided not to push it further, pulling both Tommy and Tubbo back into a hug.

“So! What’s the plan for getting back to Blaizon after the celebration?” Tubbo said, switching the subject.

“Well, I’m not taking you two through the Nether as I want you both to experience more of the world and I don’t trust either of you enough not to go running off in there. Meaning that we will have to go over the mountains and through Anwood,” explained Eret. “It will probably take us about a week to get to the mountains and another week to get from Anwood to Blaizon.”

“HEY! We wouldn’t run off!!” Tommy pouted.

“No, we totally would Tommy,” counted Tubbo.

“Shush!”

“Come on boys, lets get inside,” Eret chuckled as the boys started to fight each other, pushing them towards the building. “We can talk more about plans tomorrow.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Little Rock Orphanage
January 7th
Tommy sighed as he woke up the next day, staring at the ceiling of his room for what would be the last time. He wanted to just get out of there, but Tubbo and Eret wanted to celebrate a bit before leaving. He couldn’t wait to get to Blaizon and start living with Eret and Tubbo and working at the bakery with Niki. Tubbo was going to be working with Eret at the local library because Tubbo and baking (or cooking) had no place together.
Slowly getting up from his bed, Tommy picked out his clothes for the day and went to get dressed. Coming back from the bathroom, he walked over to the dresser and started packing up all of his clothes into the bag Eret had given him last night. Reaching the bottom of the drawer, he grabbed the brooch lying there and pinned it to the inside of his pants, the usual place that he put it. He had never shown it to anyone, the only person who knew of its existence was the matron and Tommy wanted to keep it that way. It was the only thing he had to connect him with his past, with the person who dropped him off at the orphanage. The brooch had the emblem of Atlalune on it – a bird with a sun behind it. Unlike the official emblem, though, the bird on his brooch has emeralds embedded where its eyes should be, and only a sunset behind it instead of a full sun. Tommy has always wondered why it was different from the official emblem, but he had never been able to find anything about the different symbol.
“Tommy! Grab your bags and come down! We’re about to head out to the lake!” Tubbo said as he knocked on the door, passing by.
Tommy quickly shoved the last of his belongings into the bag and stood up, walking towards the door. “I’m coming!” He shouted after Tubbo as he gave one last glance behind him. He knew he was starting on a new chapter in his life, and it would be for the better. But he never would have realized just how much his life would change once he left that orphanage.
Chapter Text
Ok, so I've been doing some work on this story and I've realized that ppl who are subscribed to me aren't getting the nofications of me editing the chapters!
So, to recap, I've edited the prologue and chapter one - you don't have to reread if you don't want to, I didn't add anything in. Hopefully, I'll be able to write ahead of posting enough to be able to update every other week, even if I can't write for a bit! But updates might be a bit slow until I get to that point.
Also, thanks everyone for 150 kudos!!!! I can't believe that many people like my story!!
Notes:
