until you come back

Summary:

klee wants kaeya to come back

Notes:

this is just a quick story inspired by klee’s presence in the last fic (beneath the stars i’ll celebrate)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

it’s raining the day albedo tells klee that kaeya’s going away. that day her tears fall as heavily as the raindrops, because she doesn’t want mr. kaeya to leave.

she wants to go fish blasting with the man that has funny blue hair. wants to eat the meals that he makes just for the both of them. klee wants to curl up by mr. kaeya’s side as she’s drifting off to bed, and listen to the stories he tells of ancient warriors and forgotten princes.

“he’ll come back soon, won’t he big brother?” she asks, looking up at albedo. her brother always has an answer for everything.

and yet,

“i’m not sure klee.”

klee doesn’t remember a time when albedo’s ever been unsure.

the girl ends up in solitary that evening. she had blown up the starfell lake, hoping if the explosion was big enough, kaeya would see it and come back to her.

instead, she rests by herself in the small room, where the weight of kaeya’s absence sits heavily. there’s no one busting her out and taking her back to the lake, no one sneaking storybooks through the small crack at the base of the door.

when jean finally lets her out, the tear tracks on klee’s face have dried up.

“master jean?” klee asks, and her voice is too quiet, too fitting to her little body. klee has always been explosive and loud. kaeya must’ve stolen a part of her when he left. yes, klee thinks. and when kaeya comes back that part will return.

“yes klee?” jean asks. she sounds tired.

“you know when mr. kaeya’s coming back, don’t you?” the girl asks, looking up at jean the same way she looked up at albedo.

klee doesn’t remember a time when jean’s ever looked so sad.

“i don’t klee, i’m sorry.”

tears don’t suit master jean.

as klee walks around mondstadt that night, she notices something.

lisa looks sad too, and the boy razor hangs out with when the both of them are exploring. the nuns at the church, the strange red haired man, the rest of the knights, everyone looks so sad.

why did it seem like mr. kaeya took everyone’s happiness when he left?

klee runs out of the city, not wanting to be surrounded by such a broken atmosphere. she wants mr. kaeya back.

the girl finds herself walking near the whispering woods. she makes her way down near the water, where her and kaeya would sit and share a meal in between their adventures.

she sits alone on the grass, and looks up at the stars.

“don’t worry about everyone being sad mr. kaeya,” she says aloud, wondering if the wind will carry her words to the man.

“i’ll keep them happy for you.”

klee smiles to herself. she won’t be sad, kaeya needs her to take care of everyone.

“i’ll keep them happy until you come back.”

she whispers.

“so come back soon mr. kaeya.”
