Giving Thanks: A Motivator Story

Summary:

“What are you thankful for, Umino Iruka?”

I was quiet, considering the question as I dressed. “Well, Hokage-sama,” I answered, treading carefully. “That is the theme of the day. Pondering all that we have to be thankful for.”

Notes:

For my dear OneSaltyLeo, I sincerely hope I did your characters some form of justice here. And that I could bring a smile to your face.

This story is a holiday tribute to his story Motivator. If you haven't read it yet, you are seriously missing out!

Work Text:

“You are late, Umino Iruka.”

“My sincerest apologies, Ho-hokage-sama,” I stammered, bowing as much as I could while leaning into the frame of the door. I trembled into the wood, afraid that if I stepped away my knees would buckle. I had been doing so well, staying on my Lord of Konoha’s good side, as far as I knew. I didn’t want to mess that record up now. What could I do to make this better? “I wasn’t sure if I would be wanted today.”

Hatake Kakashi peered up at me from his paperwork though his eyes remained lazy and disinterested, I knew I had his attention. And not in a good way.

“And why would you not be wanted today, Umino Iruka?” my Lord of Konoha drawled. “Are you declining your shift teaching at the Academy?”

I stepped forward into the room on wobbly legs, terrified of making the wrong move, of saying the wrong thing. Are you angry with me? I knew that he must be. Damn it, Iruka. You got too comfortable and started making assumptions.

“The Academy is closed today, Hokage-sama,” I said with my eyes lowered humbly.

“Closed?” he queried, as though he could not care less.

“Yes, Ho-hokage-sama,” I stuttered. The Academy was closed today, wasn’t it? It was closed this day every year. Or was this something that changed under my Lord of Konoha’s tenure? “Today is a holiday.” Do we still have holidays under this regime?

“A holiday.” He seemed like the idea was the most droll concept he had ever considered.

“Y-yes, Ho-hokage-sa-sama.” I was beginning to get really nervous. I did not want to make my Lord of Konoha angry.

“It’s Thanksgiving!” Sasuke nearly shouted, causing me to jump. He sounded so exasperated with everyone in the room as though they were all stupid for not catching on sooner. “Nii-san, I told you there was no school today.” Itachi simply put a calming hand on Sasuke’s head, acknowledging his outburst wordlessly.

“Ah, yes,” Hatake Kakashi shuffled the papers on his desk idly. “And how does one celebrate Thanksgiving, Sasuke?”

“We… uh… say thank you to people?” His eyes reluctantly looked to me, pleading for help. He hated not having the answer when asked a question.

I couldn’t help but smile softly. “That’s right, Sasuke,” I reassured him, although he missed the point of Thanksgiving completely. It hadn’t occurred to me that our Akatsuki overlords were unfamiliar with the holiday. Did they celebrate any holidays? “Today is a day to gather with family and appreciate all that we have in our lives. We give thanks for the blessings bestowed upon us.”

“Family?” Sasuke asked, as he glanced sideways at his brother.

“Yes, sometimes we don’t get to see our family every day and today is a day to spend some extra time enjoying their company.” I worried that I had been presumptuous and said too much, caught up in teacher mode and enjoying the lesson. I pushed on to cover my mistake as though I had not made one. “We make a big meal together and talk about everything in our lives that we have to be thankful for.”

“So you’ll be cooking with Naruto? Like family?” Sasuke’s voice warbled just the tiniest bit at the end of the statement. It took a minute for me to figure out why this concept might upset him. Oh, I thought, he feels like he’s missing out.

“I would like to, yes,” I responded, attempting to be casual. “I don’t know how long my Hokage-sama will need me today though. But, perhaps when I am finished here, you can come and help? If that is okay with your brother?” It was apparent that they did not have other plans and no one should be alone on a holiday.

Itachi eyed me warily, considering. But before he could answer, Sasuke took the liberty to attempt to clear up any confusion. “But we’re not family.”

“Family is what you make it, Sasuke,” I assured him. “Not all families are related by blood. Naruto and I are not, but he is still my son. Sometimes family can include friends or neighbors or coworkers...”

“Or students?” Sasuke asked hopefully, nearly bouncing on his toes.

“Yes, students or teachers as well,” I agreed. “Anyone who is precious to you that you would like to spend some extra time with. Assuming you have the extra time to spend…” I trailed off, once again unsure of myself. “I would be ho-honored to have you and your bro-brother join us for Thanksgiving dinner this evening,” I stammered through the invitation. “And if you are available, I would love to have your help in preparing the meal.”

Sasuke looked to his brother hopefully, eyes wide with excitement. “Can we, Nii-san? Can we?”

Itachi looked from his brother to me to his Hokage, before replying. “I don’t see why not.” He bowed slightly toward Hatake Kakashi. “Hokage-sama?”

Hatake Kakashi’s eyes crinkled in what I’ve come to learn was a soft smile in Sasuke’s direction. “Yes, I don’t see why we can’t finish up here in plenty enough time for you to join Umino Iruka in cooking and dinner.”

“Will you be coming too?” Sasuke asked, eyebrows furrowed like we were all missing something obvious. I can only imagine his frustration at having to deal with such dense adults all the time.

Hatake Kakashi’s eyes flicked to me briefly and I jumped in to interrupt before considering it fully. “P-please, Hokage-sama. It would be an honor t-to have you join us for this holiday celebration.” I bowed as I finished my request, bearing the back of my neck in all of the vulnerability that I felt.

Hatake Kakashi leaned to the side slightly, resting his chin in his hand as he so often did, while he considered me. “The pleasure would be mine,” he responded after several long moments. “With that considered, I think I would like to spend some time alone with my favorite Konoha nin before I lose him to his preparations for tonight’s celebrations.”

Itachi gracefully took that as the dismissal that it was and gathered Sasuke’s hand in his. He stopped at the doorway and turned. “What should we bring with us to dinner tonight, Umino Iruka?” Always the height of social etiquette, apparently.

“Just yourselves,” I responded. “Dress comfortably, no need to be fancy. With the amount of food that we’ll gorge ourselves on, you’ll want to be cozy. Many people often take naps after the meal.”

“Naps,” Itachi said hollowly, as though the idea of napping in a room full of other people were preposterous.

“If you or Sasuke have a favorite dish, you could shop for the ingredients and we will be sure to add it to the menu,” I supplemented.

At this, Sasuke tugged on Itachi’s hand before whispering in his ear. Itachi nodded sagely. “Very well,” he added. “I’ll bring Sasuke back to the office before you leave so that he can accompany you home and help you prepare the meal.”

As soon as the door closed behind them I began to undress. I knew this part of my daily visits to the tower well. A glance up at my Lord of Konoha showed him still lazy and disinterested, but his eyes were on me burning with intensity as I made my way towards the couch. If I let my fingers linger a little longer on an article of clothing, let my hands drag across my skin in a gentle caress, could I really be blamed? Not with all that attention fully on me. I was here to put on a show, after all.

Before I could seat myself on the couch my Lord Hokage decided to speak up. “No.” That single word was all it took to stop me abruptly. I could feel his chakra stroke my skin and goosebumps rose to cover my naked body. A gentle nudge of chakra to my shoulder had me turning around to face him, and another gentle caress lifting my chin. I felt his chakra wrap around my waist, embracing me, almost like a hug and I took a step towards him before I could consider it. Hatake Kakashi leaned back in his chair and gestured at his desk lazily. “Here,” was the only direction that he gave.

Unsure steps took me tentatively toward my Lord Hokage, my heartbeat rising in my throat. The tendril of chakra that had lifted my chin now slid down the side of my neck to my pulse point, feeling it thrumming away wildly. Hatake Kakashi’s eyes widened the slightest bit to show that he noticed, but otherwise he made no movement. I lifted a leg over his to straddle him, and managed it without actually touching him, legs spread wide as I leaned back to sit on his desk. The papers must have been cleared away while I was undressing because there was no sign of them, just the cool oak beneath my bare ass. I took the liberty of raising my feet to the arm rests of my Lord Hokage’s chair and placed them spread to either side of him as I leaned back with one arm on the desk. He did not complain, my body on full display, just for him.

Hatake Kakashi said nothing as I took my cock in hand, letting my fingers trail lightly up to the swollen head and the beads of precum gathering at the slit before gently trailing them back down. He liked to watch me tease myself for as long as I could stand it and I relished in the attention. My Lord of Konoha leaned into the armrest, resting his chin in his hand in his habitual position as he raised his left hand to the top of my foot and began to trace nonsense patterns idly into my skin.

“Are you thankful, Umino Iruka?” The question caught me by surprise and I stopped all movement as I looked to my Lord Hokage.

“W-what, Ho-hokage-sa-sama?” I stammered. I wasn’t sure how to answer the question.

Lying is unwholesome.

Are you thankful?” He repeated, face stony and unchanged. I felt his chakra curl around my fingers, pushing them back toward my cock and encouraging me to continue my ministrations. I took myself back into my hand and stroked slowly up to the tip, swiping fingers across my slit to gather precum before gripping and sliding back down. I tilted my head back and moaned at the sensation, momentarily forgetting that I had been asked a question. I continued to pump my cock smoothly, mouth hanging open in my pleasure as moans spilled out. Hatake Kakashi gave my foot a squeeze to bring my focus back to him. His eyes stared at me with an intensity I did not see often. “Umino Iruka.” The simple statement of my name was enough to bring my focus back to the question.

“Y-yes, Hokage-sama!” I breathed, hand speeding up on my cock. I could feel my climax quickly approaching and trembled in my effort to hold out a little longer.

“Yes, what, Umino Iruka?” The question demanded an answer.

“Yes, Hokage-sama!” I screamed. “Yes I am thankful!” I came hard, making a mess all over my hand, but thankfully not spilling onto my Lord of Konoha in front of me. I hunched forward, panting as I found myself utterly spent. Hatake Kakashi handed me a towel wordlessly and allowed me to clean myself up before rising from his seat and crossing to one of the windows that lined the office walls. I gathered my clothes and started dressing, deep in thought. My Lord Hokage wanted to know if I was thankful? Am I thankful?

“What are you thankful for, Umino Iruka?”

I was quiet, considering the question as I dressed. “Well, Hokage-sama,” I answered, treading carefully. “That is the theme of the day. Pondering all that we have to be thankful for.” Hatake glanced back at me with amusement in his eyes and my non-answer as I stepped toward him. “If it pleases my Lord, you could ask me again tonight at dinner?” Surprisingly, he allowed my evasion and nodded his head. At that moment the door to the office opened and the Uchiha brothers entered. I didn’t know how Itachi knew that we were finished, and I didn’t really want to think too hard about it. How well does sound carry in the Tower?

I greeted Sasuke, holding out my hand as I took the bag of groceries from Itachi. “We’ll see you both this evening?” I asked as I turned back to my Lord Hokage.

“Yes,” Hatake Kakashi responded in his usual disinterested tone. “We will finish up our work by sundown, and then we’ll come.”

The afternoon was a whirl of cooking and cleaning and preparing for the most intense Thanksgiving dinner that I had ever experienced. Not the most important. That would forever be the first Thanksgiving that I spent with Naruto. But my company this year was going to be nerve-wracking. The house needed to be perfect. The food needed to be flawless. I was already exhausted. But I managed to multi-task and I had two very willing, albeit quarrelling helpers. Absolutely everything was automatically a competition between those two and I eventually used it to my advantage. Who could dust their section of the apartment most thoroughly? Who can peel potatoes the fastest? Who can peel the most hard boiled eggs without damaging the surface? Eventually we had our meal spread before us, covering every inch of counter and table space in the small kitchen. We ate in the living room, some guests on the couch and others pulling kitchen chairs around the coffee table. The Uchihas initially attempted to exhibit some restraint, but they learned quickly that the food was too delicious to eat sparingly. Not to mention that even getting just a small portion of each delicacy still resulted in a full belly and eyes drooping in desired nap. Before long Naruto and Sasuke were passed out, cuddled up together on the couch, while Itachi sat nearby attempting to refuse sleep, but lightly dozing nonetheless. My Lord Hatake Kakashi helped me in clearing and cleaning the dishes and packing away leftovers. A very menial task for the Hokage of Konoha. As he was drying dishes for me to put away, Hatake Kakashi stilled, lost in thought.

“Hokage-sama?” I queried, worried that I had done something to upset him

“Umino Iruka,” he answered, eyes crinkling at the corners. “What are you thankful for?”

I had known that the question was coming and had plenty of time to consider my answer, but I still found myself faltering. What kind of answer do you want?

Lying is unwholesome.

“I think I have much to be thankful for,” I answered carefully, testing the waters of his mood with my words. “I’m very thankful for my son. Naruto simply makes life worth living. He is everything to me.” Please don’t take him away from me. “I’m thankful for my village. The kindness of my friends and neighbors, the feeling of community in Konoha.” Much has changed since the Akatsuki took over, but I found this statement still to be true. “I am thankful for the necessities that I am able to provide for myself and my son. The access we have to food, shelter, clothing...” Regardless of the current state of politics and the level of fear penetrating the village, our basic needs are met. “I am thankful for my job in the village. I am honored to be able to work with children and to mold future generations of shinobi.”

Hatake Kakashi cocked his head thoughtfully, considering my words.

“And you, Hokage-sama?” I asked in turn. “What are you thankful for?”

A soft smile touched Hatake Kakashi’s eyes as he turned to me. “I’m thankful for you, Umino Iruka. My favorite Konoha nin.”
