Chapter 1: Band Camp: Day 1

Chapter Text

BEEP BEEP BEEP!

Clinton rolled over and turned off the annoying alarm on his phone. “First day of the hell weeks,” he thought as he got up “now what’s the theme for today?”

He unlocked his phone and opened the group chat to see what he said yesterday.

“Oh yeah, rainbow,” he remembered, “Hannover always does the same themes every year, both a blessing and a curse,” he thought while he pulled out the rainbow bandanna he got his freshman year.

“Alright, do I have everything I need for today,” he quietly said, “hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, drill card, water, chalk, clarinet, music, extra reeds, streamers, and tent. Looks like I’m good to go.”

After eating a quick breakfast, he checked the time on his phone.

He should be here any minute.

A few seconds later, Burgoyne pulled up in front of his driveway. "ARE YOU READY FOR BAND CAMP?!" the tenor sax shouted from the driver's seat.

"Yeah, just let me get this thing over to you" Clinton replied, dragging the easy-up tent behind him.

After throwing the tent in the trunk next to Burgoyne's, the pair headed off to the school.

"Could you drop me off near the dumpster?" Clinton asked.

"Sure," Burgoyne replied.

Once they got to the cement practice field, Clinton began setting up the tent. Some of the flutes were already there setting up their tent. He could see Simcoe, an alto saxophone, helping secure the top of the tent with the flutes' section leader, Xander. Meanwhile, André was getting some multi-colored streamers out of his bag. On the other side of the practice field, the low woods were decorating their tent. One of the sophomores brought a Nikki Minaj flag and tied it to the front of the tent.

As Clinton stood up the metal frame, another member of his section arrived, a sophomore named Mya.

“Morning Mya! Can you help me open this up?”

“Sure!” she replied, jogging over to him.

After they put the tent up, Carly and Emma showed up, giggling about something. The rest of the section slowly trickled in over the next few minutes.

Meanwhile, the drum majors were setting up their podiums and the speakers for the metronome. Burgoyne jogged over to his girlfriend, Charlotte, and set up the speakers while she set up her podium on the back of the field.

"BOO DO DO DOOP! BEEP!" the speaker sounded as Charlotte turned it on to make sure it was working.

At 8:30, the drum majors called the band over to stretch before warmups.

"GOOD MORNING! AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST DAY OF BAND CAMP!" Kylie, one of the drum majors, exclaimed. The sound of cheers from the band followed.

"Alright, let's get started! Everyone spread out so you can't touch each other!" The band backed up to make the warmup circle bigger.

"Now, everyone lunge to the left!"

"Now give me 20 of the most enthuuuuuustastic jumping jacks!" As the band counted their jumping jacks out loud, the low brass started circling the drum majors and jumping around them. All the woodwind freshmen stared at them in confusion.

After they finished stretching, Hannover called the section leaders over to get the drill cards. Clinton ran over to the scaffolding, but was still the last one there.

Once all the drill cards were passed out, Hannover called out "Alright, everyone go to set 1!"
