Chapter 1: Only Heaven I'll Be Sent To, Is When I'm Alone With You

Chapter Text

Adora stared at Catra’s face. She was the most beautiful person Adora has ever seen. They were laying in Adora’s bed. Catra was sleeping. Adora was watching her sleep. Mara would be home soon. But that didn’t matter right now. Only thing that mattered right now was watching Catra sleep.

Adora was sure she was whipped. Not that she could do anything about it. They have been in this situation too many times to count. Catra would sleep soundly while Adora watched her. She was so beautiful. More beautiful than any other girl in their school. The thought wasn’t new. Neither was the ache in her heart after the said thought. She kept staring at her best friend. Like this was the last time she was seeing her.

She was missing Catra. They weren’t even 10 centimeters apart but she was missing her. She figured you could be so close to someone and still miss them. She was missing having a sleepover everyday. She was missing making Catra laugh as much as she used to. She was missing hugging her at any chance she got. She was missing telling her how beautiful she is.

It has been a few weeks since Catra became distant. Well not really. They were still close. But Adora couldn’t help but feel that something was off. Well Catra wasn’t acting any different which would inevitably mean the only thing off was herself.

She had been having these feelings for Catra. Feelings that she knew, wouldn’t go away anytime soon. Or ever. At first she swore she wouldn’t do anything about them. But that promise was getting harder and harder to keep. Look, no one could blame her really. Catra was beautiful, smart, elegant, smelled really nice, her hair was also beautiful so it was totally normal for Adora to have these feelings. Everyone’s a little in love with their best friend, right? Well, ‘a little’ didn’t quite cover what Adora was feeling but still.

She was daydreaming about kissing her best friend under the stars when the said best friend woke up.

“Morning.” Catra said, sounding very sleepy. Adora sighed.

“It’s almost 5.”

“Meaning you didn’t wake me up for two hours.” Catra said, eyes still closed. Sleeping after school was her favourite thing to do.

“I’m sorry but you were sleeping so peacefully. You know I don’t have it myself to wake you up.” Adora said, making Catra open her eyes and look at her.

“You aren’t usually this soft. Something going on?” Catra gasped. “Am I dying?”

“Shut up.” Adora laughed.

“I love you, dumbass.” Catra said, smiling.

“I love you too.” Adora was smiling too. “You are my best friend.”

“You are mine too.” They stared at each other for what felt like a hundred years for Adora. Catra loved her, Adora knew. Maybe not in the same way she did but it was enough for her. It had to be enough.

“My mom will be home soon. Do you wanna stay for dinner, maybe?” Adora said after realizing she was staring for a bit too long.

“Sure. Figured mom won’t be cooking anything today.”

“Meeting?”

“Don’t know. She just said she won’t be coming back until late.”

“Stay for the night, then.”

“I’ll give her a call after dinner.”

“Okay.”

“Why do you keep staring at me like that?”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know. Like you are gonna close your eyes and I’m gonna disappear.”

“Hmm. Poetic.”

“Adora.”

“What?”

“Answer the question.”

“Do you want me to be honest?” Adora said, raising one eyebrow.

“Honestly? Yeah.”

“Okay.” Adora sighed and continued “I feel like we drifted apart.”

“What do you mean?”

“Like everything is the same but I feel like I can’t get enough of you. Like I miss you constantly.” Adora said, making Catra’s eyes open wider.

“Okay. I miss you too.”

“Really? So you know what I mean, right?”

“I mean, yeah. But it’s the last year of high school Adora. We both knew that we weren’t gonna be together all the time this year. You know we have to study and stuff.” Catra said. Wow. That hurt. Adora thought.

“Yeah totally but don’t you think we can spend a little more time together? Or at least study together maybe?”

“You know we are not able to study together.”

“Yeah but-”

“Okay let’s see: this is the third time I’m gonna be staying over this week considering it’s the fourth day of the week, we constantly hang out together in school-”

“Well then fuck me for wanting to be with you.” Adora said, about to get up from the bed until Catra held her wrist.

“Listen, dummy I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Well then, what are you saying exactly?”

“I’m saying that it’s totally normal for close friends to drift apart when it’s their last year of high school. We both know that we have to study. A lot. And I’m not saying that you are wrong to feel that way. I can’t get enough of you as well. But it’s totally normal. We just have to get through this year, then I’m all yours, okay?” Catra said, stroking Adora’s cheek with her thumb.

“Okay.” Adora looked down at the bed.

“Come here.” Catra said, got up and leaned forward. They started hugging. It was a very awkward position since they were half sitting on the bed but it was comfortable. It was them. Adora sighed on Catra’s shoulder.

“Sorry for being weird or whatever but you mean everything to me and I don’t wanna lose you. I thought if we kept drifting apart it would eventually mean I would lose you and believe me, that’s literally the last thing I want.” Adora said, she was lowkey tearing up. She didn’t know where this emotional mode was coming from. She wasn’t on her period.

“You mean everything to me too.” Catra said and hugged Adora tighter. “And believe me, you couldn’t lose me even if you tried.”

“Why would I try?” Adora pulled back from the hug.

“You know what I mean. It’s a figure of speech.” Catra said in a tone that made Adora laugh.

“I love you.” Adora said, smiling.

“I love you too, dumbass.” Catra said, making Adora laugh again. “You are the sappiest person I know.”

“In a good way or a bad way?”

“You guess.”

“Come on.”

“Good.”

“Nice.” Adora said, and leaned forward for another hug.

-

Mara was home. She had cooked the dinner whereas the girls changed their clothes into more comfortable ones. Catra borrowed one of Adora’s hoodies. Thank god she had some of her sweatpants in Adora’s house because considering how big the hoodie was on her, Adora’s sweatpants wouldn’t exactly fit.

The three of them were having dinner. Razz wasn't gonna be home today. Even though Adora had found it silly, she was having a sleepover with one of her friends. Well, Razz didn’t really call it a sleepover but Adora had always found a way to make her grandma laugh.

“How was school?” Mara asked. Adora was too busy eating so Catra decided to answer.

“It was nice. The usual boring stuff.” Catra said, making Mara laugh. Catra couldn’t help but think how similar Adora and her mom looked when they laughed. Both of them were very pretty.

They talked about nothing for a bit while having dinner. Eventually they finished eating. Catra was full. So was Adora. Mara was a very good cook aside from being a good doctor. She was a gynaecologist but also an obstetrician. Meaning she had too many stories about giving birth to the ‘most beautiful baby’, they were fun to listen to considering how excited Mara get while telling.

They got up from dinner and cleaned the table. Well at least tried to. Mara didn’t let them. She said that they should go up to Adora’s room to study or whatever. All of them knew they weren’t going to study but they went to Adora’s room anyway.

“Are you gonna call your mom now?” Adora asked, closing the door behind her.

“Yeah.” Catra said, getting her phone from her pocket and sitting on Adora’s bed. Adora sat beside her.

Catra clicked on Mother on her phone. Then she clicked the phone symbol above the mobile writing. It rang once, then twice. SW picked up, thankfully.

“Mom?” Catra said, hearing “Wait a minute, I'm gonna go somewhere quiet.”

“Okay.” Catra said, looking at Adora. Adora was able to hear SW, Catra knew.

“Okay. I’m listening.” SW always spoke in a serious tone but it was a little more serious this time.

“I was wondering if I could stay at Adora’s since you are coming late today.”

“Is her mother okay with that?” SW asked. Catra looked at a nodding Adora.

“Yeah.”

“Okay. See you tomorrow night then. I will not be coming late so I will be able to cook.”

“Okay. Goodbye.” Catra said and closed the phone after hearing “Goodbye.”

Sharon West or as Adora liked to call her, SW was not an affectionate mother to say the least. She had gotten a divorce with her husband when Catra was 3 years old. Catra never really knew her father. But it was okay because SW was enough. She wasn’t exactly the best parent but she tried. Well not really but it was better than nothing. She cooked, cleaned, gave Catra praise on her grades every once in a while and went to work. It was enough for Catra. Or it wasn’t. Not that she would ever admit that to herself.

“Wow, tough day at work.” Adora said which made Catra smile.

“This is her in an okay mood. You know that.”

“Well I’m glad she said okay. I get to have you all for myself all night.”

“Easy, tiger. Let’s try studying for physics tomorrow. You and I both can use a little practice.”

“Don’t you think it’s cruel that they put a physics lesson on a Friday?”

“Yes, baby. So cruel. What will we ever do?” Catra said in a mocking tone.

“Oh come on.” Adora sighed then smiled “You are such a nerd.”

“Oh you are done.” Catra said before basically jumping on Adora. Roughhousing was their type of bonding. They have been doing this ever since they knew each other. They never really hurt one another though, just had fun. Adora liked it. Not only the having fun part but also being close to Catra part.

“You smell really good.” Adora said. She was pinned down on both of her hands by Catra. She was sitting on Adora’s lap. It was a weird position to say the least.

“I showered yesterday.”

“You know what I mean.”

“What?”

“You always smell good.”

“Thank you. You too. But if you think this is gonna make me forget you calling me a nerd” Catra stopped.

“Yeah?”

“You’re right. Tell me more” Catra said and stopped pinning down Adora. Now their faces weren’t close. Like at all. Because Adora was laying down and Catra was sitting on her lap. So Adora tried sitting up and succeeded. She wrapped her arms around a smiling Catra and looked her in the eyes before saying “You smell like vanilla.”

“Continue.”

“And strawberries.”

“That’s because I use a strawberry scented hair conditioner and a vanilla scented perfume.”

“You should continue, it’s really good.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. Your own smell is really good as well.”

“What?”

“The smell that comes to me when I hug you.”

“You smell like a very sugary lemonade.”

“Well that wasn’t very nice of you, was it?” Adora said in a judging voice.

“You are such an idiot. I meant it in, like, a good way or whatever.”

“Oh. Were you trying to compliment me?” Adora said, leaning forward.

“Yeah, I guess.” Catra looked away before inevitably looking at Adora’s stupid, beautiful, blue eyes.

“Why, thank you.”

“God, you are such a dork.”

“I’m your dork though. There is no way you are getting rid of me. I hope you know that.”

“I don’t think I want to.” Catra said. They were almost having a staring contest because neither of them looked away since what felt like forever.

“You know,” Catra said, raising her hands to hold Adora’s face with one of them and to put the other on Adora’s neck “Your eyes are-” She stopped.

“What?”

“They are so easy to get lost in.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Catra stared at her. And god, stared at her. She was almost waiting for something. She didn’t know what but she kept staring.

“Well your eyes are way cooler than mine so that topic is off-limits.” Adora said before kissing Catra on her cheek and putting her head in the crook of Catra’s neck.

“Adora?” Catra said, making Adora look at her.

“Yeah?” Adora said with those curious blue eyes of hers and stared back at Catra. And that was when Catra realized she wanted to kiss her best friend. The thought was new, dangerous and probably wrong so she decided to shake her head to get rid of it.

“Nothing.” Catra managed to say.

“No. You were gonna say something.”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“Yes, you were.”

“I love you.” Catra said dumbly.

“I love you too. What were you gonna say?”
