Worldbuilding in SWTOR

Summary:

This is a meta essay collection that analyzes the SWTOR game and its characters. This is a fanwork, though it is not fan fiction. This entry will always be marked as complete; chapters will be added over time. Each essay is self-contained and does not need any other context.

The analyses do aim to be universe neutral (workable with any character/class as the playable character), but many ideas/aspects of these essays appear in my own fan fic series on the subject.

7/27 -- two chapters added
5/25 -- two chapters added
5/18 -- two chapters added
4/26 -- two chapters added

Notes:

If anyone is a reader of my fan fic series, you may see some familiar ideas and interpretations in here. This is sort of the cutting room floor or the backstage area -- my thought process for why I shape characters the way I do in the fic series. The initial spate of essays were previously posted on tumblr, which I will probably continue to do in the future.

Chapter 1: Gift-Giving and Disillusionment: Lana Beniko and Theron Shan

Chapter Text

Lana Beniko happily takes gifts of Imperial memorabilia.  She’s a true believer in her Sithiness, even though she leaves to join the Alliance: ”Large influence.”  Lana’s parents are dead, so it’s not like she has intense personal ties to the Empire.  Even though there’s a new emperor regularly (depending on choices), Lana still can enjoy the history of the Empire for what it is.  She is pleased by Imperial/Sith items.  If the Alliance goes pear-shaped (beyond what it already is), I think she could return if she didn’t have other appealing options.

Theron Shan doesn’t take Republic memorabilia.  “No influence.”  Both his parents are still Pub aligned, technically; even if Satele has swanned off to go be a grey Jedi, she still has her loyalties.  If one supported the Republic on Iokath, Malcom bleeds Pub blue (the fact he was the last well-behaved commander of Havoc Squad gives me a giggle).  SIS still exists, Trant still exists (unless you’re DS Imp Agent), Balkar is still alive.  All the same, Theron is not pleased by Republic items.

That tells you how disillusioned he is about the Republic.  He believes in the Pub’s ideals, but the execution?  Bad enough he doesn’t want anything to remind him of it.  That also adds a poignancy to the possible decision to oust Theron from the Alliance after Nathema – where does he go from there?  Where can he go?
