Chapter Text
Ed registered exactly two things while he woke up. The first being his flesh hand was numb. The second, something was digging into his back. He tried to shift himself to get away from it, but his body stayed completely still. He couldn’t seem to open his eyes.
What the hell happened? I was walking back from the library with Winry….
Winry!
He clawed his way through the darkness only for his efforts to be brought to a halt by his pounding head. Fighting the urge to dive right back into unconsciousness, he listened, mentally perking up when something rustled. He meant to brace himself against the ground and push himself up, but his hands wouldn’t move. He shifted and immediately wished he hadn’t. Someone might as well be stabbing a butcher knife straight through his skull. He groaned at the movement.
“Ed?”
His heart dropped into his stomach at the voice. Ignoring the pounding in his head, he rolled over onto his side. His stomach lurched, but he made himself open his eyes anyway to meet Winry’s frightened gaze. After a few seconds, a smile broke out across her face.
“Win—”
“Ed, I’m so glad you’re awake! He hit you so hard…you didn’t move at all for the last couple hours….”
Well, I guess that’s one question answered.
“Wh-where…are we?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t get a good look at the guy before someone blindfolded me.”
So there’s more than one of them….
He tried to move his hands again, but they were cuffed behind his back. He tried twisting his wrists, but the metal bit into his flesh until blood dribbled into his palm. His automail didn’t budge.
“I think I heard him messing around with your arm,” Winry said. “I’m not sure what he did exactly, but I know he took a few screws out. You probably can’t move it.”
Ed nodded. He looked around, finding a single window on the wall to their right. Considering the lack of light streaming through it, it was safe to say it was probably boarded up. A lone lightbulb hung down from the ceiling. A table sat against the wall to the left, but he couldn’t see if anything was on it. There were stairs across the room from them, but he couldn’t see the door. He could sure hear it when it opened, though. Winry tensed and awkwardly scooted back against the wall next to him. He realized her hands were cuffed behind her back just like his. A pair of boots appeared on the steps. Despite his pounding head and the room tilting when he moved, Ed forced himself to sit up next to Winry.
The boots were moving again. A man slowly descended the steps, snapping on a pair of gloves when he reached the bottom. He crossed his arms and smiled at them.
“I thought I heard voices.” His voice was rough and gravelly. He walked approached the two. Ed inched closer to Winry. He pulled something out of his pocket, and Ed immediately recognized his pocket watch. “I know the military’s looking for me, but I didn’t think I’d be lucky enough to catch a state alchemist.”
Ed could feel Winry’s gaze on him. His eyebrows furrowed for the briefest moment before his eyes widened once he remembered going to Central Command a few days ago to drop off a report.
“It looks like we’ve got a serial killer targeting couples. We don’t have any other description of the killer other than he’s a man in his mid-to-late fifties with light brown hair. None of the couples seem to have any connection to one another, so he chooses his victims randomly. When someone reported them missing, their bodies are usually disposed of within two to four days—why the hell are you actually early for once, Fullmetal?”
The man crouched down in front of him. Sure enough, the description was fairly accurate. He had brown hair slicked back and parted on the side. Ed could see gray streaks in it and gray hairs in his beard. He unconsciously tried to scoot further back only to get stopped by the wall behind him.
There had to be a reason Mustang never got me involved in tracking this guy down….
“I swear you military officers get younger and younger every time I see you. Is the military going to schools to recruit? Or am I just getting that old?”
The man started coughing. He straightened back up and tried to catch his breath. He pulled back his hand, the glove now speckled with blood.
What the hell?
“What do you want with us?”
Ed and the man turned their attention to Winry. Her voice didn’t shake. She stared right at the man. He sighed and took off the bloody glove.
“I suppose it wasn’t fair for me to assume both of you would know how this works.” He dug around in his pocket and pulled out another clean glove. “I saw you two walking around the city today. It was impossible to miss it. You two might’ve argued at times, but even then, I could see how deeply you care for each other.” Ed risked a glance at Winry out of the corner of his eye to see her doing the same. “You two love each other, but I can only wonder if that love will persist in true suffering.”
Winry paled.
“W-we’re not—”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Ed demanded, shooting Winry a look.
Please be quiet.
Thankfully, she seemed to get the message. The man walked over to the table. Ed’s blood ran cold at the glint of a knife in the man’s hand. He walked back over to the two and crouched down even closer to Ed.
“You love her, don’t you?”
“Yeah, and what about it?”
He could’ve sword he heard Winry gasp beside him, but he didn’t dare break eye contact with the man in front of him.
“You say you love her, but how long will that last? Let me make it simple for you.” He tapped the blade against his chin. “She won’t be harmed as long as you can take the pain. The second you ask for mercy, it’s her turn. Do you understand?”
“Perfectly.”
“Ed, don’t—”
Winry’s protests were instantly drowned out by the cry of pain escaping through Ed’s clenched teeth. Ed squeezed his eyes shut while fire throbbed from his left shoulder. The man let go of the knife. Muffled coughing echoed in the basement when Ed’s scream faded.
“I’m sorry, but you two will have to excuse me.”
Ed vaguely heard the footsteps retreating up the stairs. The door creaked and slammed shut. He inhaled deeply through his nose and exhaled slowly out his mouth. His breath shook. He mustered the courage to open his eyes and look at his shoulder. His stomach churned again when he saw the handle protruding from it.
The bastard couldn’t even take it out…actually, maybe it’s for the best that he didn’t….
“Ed….” Winry broke through the silence.
He leaned back against the wall, his head lolling to the side to look at her. All blood had drained from her face. She opened her mouth only to close it again a second later.
“Winry—”
“Ed, your shoulder….”
“It’s fine.”
“I don’t understand. H-he said…w-we’re not together—”
“And we can’t tell him that!” Ed snapped. He winced. “Winry, I’m sorry, but we can’t tell him that. That won’t exactly get him to let us go, especially with the military after him. We need to stall as long as we can. If what he says is true and I don’t ask him to stop, that won’t be a problem. We’ll have time to find a way out, and Mustang will probably track this guy down soon if we don’t.”
Winry was quiet. Ed wasn’t sure how much time had passed before Winry spoke up again.
“Can you last that long?”
If he hadn’t known her his whole life, he probably wouldn’t have noticed the slight shake in her voice.
“I will. I’ll make sure he won’t touch you, Winry.”
The door creaked back open. A heavier set of footsteps descended the stairs. Ed’s eyebrows rose.
Winry said there were two of them….
A man much younger and a few centimeters shorter than the first came into view on the stairs. He had the same brown hair styled in almost the exact same way.
This must be the man’s son. They’re almost identical.
However, he was much more muscular than the first man, his shoulders almost grazing the rails of the narrow staircase. He swiftly crossed the room and loomed over Ed.
“Dad needed to take a break. He sends his apologies. You’re stuck with me for now.”
Before Ed could even open his mouth, the man grabbed the hilt of the knife and yanked it out of Ed’s shoulder. He didn’t have a chance to try and stifle the scream that followed. He caught a glimpse of Winry flinching before his eyes clenched shut. Blood poured from the wound and soaked into his shirt. He took a deep breath and did his best to ignore the throbbing in his shoulder.
“How long do you think he’ll last?” the man asked Winry. Ed didn’t hear an answer. “Every woman down here always thinks her husband will last longer than they do. It’s heartbreaking to see the disappointment, but I guess it’s best that they find out eventually.”
Find out what?
Ed didn’t have any time to ponder it further when the man yanked off his boots and sock. He sighed when he saw the mismatched feet.
“Damn, you look pretty rough already.” In any other situation, and Ed sincerely wished that to be the case right now, he knew Winry would’ve laughed. Now, he couldn’t even get himself to look at her. “It makes me almost want to take it easy on you.”
He straddled Ed’s automail leg and gripped his flesh ankle. Ed stiffened when the cold tip of the bloody knife dug into the ball of his foot. He bit his lip while the man dug it deeper into his foot and slowly dragged it down to his heel.
Damn! Getting out of here is going to be a pain in the—
Crack.
He flung his head back and screamed again. His heart pounded in his chest. He stared at the ceiling while his chest heaved. He barely even registered the man getting off his automail leg. The agony radiating from his ankle was impossible to ignore. He distantly heard the creak of the stairs and the door slamming shut, but he didn’t take his gaze off the ceiling.
He didn’t want to.
He drew his automail leg up toward his chest. The slight movement sent fire shooting through his flesh foot. He bit his lip to stifle another scream. He couldn’t guess how long he stayed like that. It had to be a while if the slowly growing ache in his neck was any indication. He finally looked down at his flesh leg and immediately wished he hadn’t. The nausea he’d managed to keep at bay when he woke up returned with a vengeance when he saw the unnatural angle his foot was bent in. His leg was straight, but the outside of his foot was almost flat against the ground.
Getting out of here probably isn’t going to happen at all now….
He turned his head to look at Winry. Her legs were drawn up to her chest, and her face was buried in her knees. Her shoulders were hunched up as close to her ears as they could get.
She’ll get out of here.
“Win…W-Winry…he’s gone.”
He nearly winced at how raspy his voice was. It hurt to even speak at all.
“I know,” she whispered.
She slowly lifted her head and looked at him only to turn away at the sight of his ankle. Her entire body convulsed, and Ed could hear her dry heaving.
It won’t be long before one of them comes back….
“Listen to…me,” he said, trying to catch his breath. Winry reluctantly met his gaze. “You’re…getting out of here.”
“Not without you!” she instantly protested.
“I can’t exactly…go anywhere.”
He straightened up as much as he could. Despite his injured shoulder, he adjusted his arms behind his back. He shifted as much of his weight as possible onto his flesh hand.
Come on!
He grunted when his thumb snapped.
“Ed, what are you doing?” Winry demanded.
He ignored her. His flesh wrist stung, but it was nothing compared to his shoulder wound and broken ankle. He managed to slip his hand through the cuff. He sighed and flexed his flesh fingers. His automail arm hung limp by his side. He tried to scoot closer to Winry but was forced to bite back a cry of pain and plopped back down against the wall.
“C-can you….”
Winry didn’t need him to say anymore and inched closer to him. He traced his fingers over his shoulder wound, coating them in blood. He leaned toward the little bit of space between them and started drawing. Winry’s eyebrows rose.
“Is that a transmutation circle?”
Ed nodded.
“Put your hands near it. Make sure the cuffs are touching it.”
It took a bit of maneuvering, but Winry twisted herself around to the point where the chain between her cuffs was touching the circle. Ed planted his hand on the ground. After a brief flash, the cuffs had crumbled off her wrists. She instantly whipped her jacket off, bunched it up, and pressed it against this shoulder.
“Ed!” she hissed when he pushed her hands away.
“You need to get out of here.” He coated his fingers in his blood again. He turned as much as he could and drew the same circle on the wall behind them. “You need to find a phone and call Central Command. You remember the number I gave you, right?” She nodded. “Ask for Mustang. His code is uncle, sugar, Oliver, eight, zero, zero. Then you can come back for me.”
“I can’t leave you—”
“Uncle, sugar, Oliver, eight, zero, zero. You need to remember that! You’re the best chance we have of both of us surviving this!”
Winry was about to argue when he finished the circle. He pressed his hand against the wall. Blue flashes danced along the wall until they reached the lone window. An opening around the same size opened, and dark orange light filtered into the dim basement. She glanced back down at Ed’s ankle. She brought a hand up to her mouth, as if that would fend off the nausea making a return. She legs shook while she slowly got to her feet.
“Uncle, sugar, Oliver, eight, zero, zero.”
“Uncle, sugar, Oliver, eight, zero, zero,” she repeated. “Will you be okay?”
Ed nodded. She turned toward the opening. Her shoulders trembled. She glanced at him one last time before running to the opening and launching herself up and through it. She dragged herself out, and Ed slumped back against the wall once her legs disappeared. The orange light slowly retreated across the basement floor, causing the room to darken yet again. He listened as much as he could for any sign that their captors had heard what happened. The more minutes that ticked by, the more he relaxed.
Winry’s fine. She has to be, and she’s coming back for me.
Chapter Text
“Stay right there, Ms. Rockbell! We’re on our way!”
Roy had hung up, but Winry still clutched the phone like a lifeline. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Her heard pounded in her chest, and her legs were still burning like they had while she ran.
We apparently aren’t far from Central Command. They’ll be here soon. I didn’t run very far….
She looked over her shoulder, the phone still pressed against her ear. No one else was out on the street. Not even the woman that had given her the spare change to make the call. She didn’t blame her. The way the woman’s hands shook while handing over the coins had been impossible to ignore. It was dark except for a flickering streetlight several meters away. Her hand shook while she finally hung up the phone. She hugged herself, rubbing her hands along her arms. The little warmth it provided didn’t stop her body from trembling. She looked down at her arms, eyes widening when she saw they were stained red.
That’s Ed’s blood….
The squelch of their captor yanking the knife out of Ed’s shoulder echoed in her mind. She hunched over and vomited before she could get out of the phone booth. She was only vaguely aware of a couple cars heading her way, the headlights illuminating the previously dark street. One rolled to a stop next to the phone booth.
“Winry!”
Despite the familiar voice, she tensed when the footsteps approached her. The evening chill disappeared when a heavy coat was draped around her shoulders. Riza knelt in front of her and handed her a handkerchief.
“Thank you,” she mumbled, quickly wiping her mouth.
Roy was at Riza’s side in an instant.
“Are you—”
Winry straightened up and pointed down the street.
“The house is a few blocks that way. Make a left at the intersection. I couldn’t see a number, but it’s the sixth house down on the right. There’s a gaping hole leading to the basement. You can’t miss it.”
Roy nodded and didn’t waste any time. He jumped into the car that had just come to a stop behind Riza’s, and they sped off down the street. She clutched the jacket around her while she watched. She let out the breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding when they hung a left and disappeared around the corner.
“Let’s get you in the car,” Riza suggested. Winry swallowed and nodded, letting Riza steer her toward the running car. Riza opened the door for her, and she slid into the back seat. There was only a second between the door shutting and Riza jumping behind the wheel. “We should get you to a hospital. A doctor can look you over and—”
“I’m fine.”
Winry could see Riza looking at her in the rearview mirror. She clenched the fabric of the jacket tighter between her fingers.
“Do you want me to follow them?”
Winry nodded. Riza put the car in drive and sped down the same road her comrades had just minutes ago. Dread nestled in her stomach. Riza made a left, and her heart dropped when she saw the house. It couldn’t be missed now. Smoke poured out of the basement window. Jean stood on the lawn. Once they stopped, Winry could see that the old man was lying on the ground with his hands cuffed behind him. Roy and Heymans wrestled the younger man through the door and out onto the yard. Winry flung the door open and got out of the car.
“Wait!” Riza yelled, but she had already slammed the door shut and approached the three.
The younger man looked up when he heard her approaching. His right eye was swollen, and blood spilled from a split lip. He froze when he saw Winry. Rage flashed in his unswollen eye.
“You, bi—"
He didn’t even get to finish before Heymans kicked him behind his knees and pushed him down on the ground. Roy sprinted back into the house. Winry made to follow him, but Riza grabbed her shoulders.
“Don’t worry. He’ll get Ed out.”
Sure enough, a blue flash peeked through the hole leading to the basement.
“Fullmetal!” Roy yelled.
No more shouting followed, so Winry swallowed and watched the door. Her heart hammered harder against her chest with each passing second. It only took a couple of minutes for Roy to emerge, Ed hanging limply in his arms. His eyes were closed and showed no sign of opening.
Ed….
Before she could even say anything, he sprinted toward the car. She immediately stepped out of his way. Riza opened the back door for him, and he slid into the backseat with Ed in his lap. Riza motioned for her to jump in the passenger seat. She’d left the car running, so they sped off down the street. She turned around in her seat and locked her eyes on Ed, but she could only use the passing streetlights to get a good look at him.
“He wasn’t conscious when I found him, but he’s still breathing,” Roy said. “His heartbeat is strong, so I think that last transmutation took the last of his energy. We still need to get him to a hospital as soon as—”
“The nearest hospital is just ten kilometers north of here. We’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Riza glanced in the rearview mirror before setting her eyes right back on the road. Despite the darkness, Winry could see her knuckles where white. She looked back to Ed
“I’m glad you called us when you did, Winry. Those bastards were determined to find a way past his barricade. Luckily, they hadn’t figured out a way to get around it before we got there.”
Winry nodded. She swallowed again. Her mouth was completely dry. She clutched the borrowed jacket even tighter. She met Roy’s gaze.
“Did…d-did they say why they….”
She couldn’t even get herself to finish the question. Roy shook his head.
“They didn’t say much of anything while we apprehended them. Hughes and his team will figure that out, though.”
She caught a glimpse of the blood staining his uniform when they passed the next streetlight. She turned back around in her seat, feeling another wave of nausea washing over her. She leaned her head against the window, the glass cooling her now warm skin.
“He’ll be okay, Winry,” Riza assured.
He will be. He always will be.
*break*
The ache throughout his entire body was the first thing Ed was aware of while he regained consciousness. He groaned and tried to roll over onto his side, but fire shot through his left shoulder the second he moved. He cried out, then footsteps shuffled around him.
Where…where’s Winry?
“Shit! Go get his nurse!”
Colonel?
He stilled just long enough for a pair of hands firmly, but gently, turn him over and hold him down. He could hear the door opening and slamming shut only to open again a couple seconds later.
“He’s in pain. Can you….”
He fought to open his eyes when Roy trailed off. It took a couple of tries, but he managed it. Roy loomed over him with his hands planted on his chest. Roy’s head was turned, and Ed followed his gaze to see a nurse fiddling with an IV set up right next to his bed.
“He’s awake?”
Despite the hands holding him down and the agony blazing through his flesh shoulder and leg, he tried to get up when he heard Winry’s voice.
“Stay still, Fullmetal. You’re in no condition to be moving around like this! At least give the medicine time to kick in.”
Ed went still when Winry was in his line of sight.
“You’re…okay?” he asked, never taking his eyes off her.
She grabbed his flesh hand and squeezed it.
“I’m okay, Ed.”
He relaxed back against the pillows. Roy held on for a few more seconds before letting go, stepping away, and crossing his arms. The nurse scribbled something onto her clipboard before leaving the room. Winry kept her grip on his hand and sat on the edge of the bed.
“What’s the last thing you remember, Fullmetal?”
Ed swallowed, and Winry’s grip tightened. He opened his mouth only to start coughing. Winry instantly let go of his hand and gave him a glass of water. Roy braced an arm behind his back and lifted him just enough to take a drink. Within seconds, he’d gulped down the entire glass, and Roy slowly lowered him back down on the pillows.
“Thanks,” he mumbled. His eyebrows scrunched together. “I remember transmuting an opening in the basement.” Winry grinned and nodded, grabbing his hand once more. “I’m not sure how much time had passed before one of the guys came down the stairs. I transmuted a barrier around me, and I don’t remember anything after that.”
“You passed out, and I can’t say I’m surprised. Your doctor said you have a concussion. I don’t think I need to remind you how dangerous it is to perform a transmutation with that kind of injury.”
Ed turned his head away.
“Yeah, whatever.”
He stiffened when Roy took a couple steps closer.
“But I can’t say I blame you, and I’m glad you got Winry out and protected yourself like you did.” He turned his head back around to see Roy crouched down by his bed. “Your quick thinking saved both of you and helped us catch these killers. We didn’t even know we were searching for more than one, but they’re both off the streets and can’t hurt anyone else.”
Roy straightened up, and Winry finally looked at him.
“Have they said anything?”
Roy rubbed the back of his neck.
“I called Hughes over an hour ago. Their names are Ethan and Noel York. From what he’s gathered so far, Ethan’s wife passed away just over three months ago.”
“That’s when the killings started, isn’t it?” Ed ventured.
Roy nodded.
“Hughes is trying to figure out what from since Ethan won’t discuss her any further, but her death is definitely the stressor. He called a doctor in because Noel admitted his dad was sick but didn’t specify with what. We’re guessing it’s the same disease his wife had.”
“They said nothing would happen to me as long as Ed could take the pain,” Winry spoke up. “I don’t understand…why would they….”
“It’s just a guess, but Hughes thinks that Ethan feels as though he could’ve done more to prevent his wife’s death, so he set up a sick game to see how long it would take for other men to fail their wives in his eyes to make himself feel better. Investigations just started questioning them a couple hours ago. I’m sure there’s a lot we don’t understand yet. Hughes said he would come by to update you two himself once he gets some more answers.”
“I see,” Winry said, shifting her gaze back to Ed.
None of them said anything else, but the silence only lasted for a minute before Roy left the room.
“You two must be hungry. I’ll go down to the cafeteria and see if I can find you all something to eat.”
Before Ed could even mutter a “thanks,” Roy disappeared into the hallway. Winry bit her lip. She tore her gaze away from him to look at his automail arm.
“I’m not sure what they did to your arm exactly, but I can get a better look at it tomorrow. It doesn’t look like they damaged it, so they probably just took out a couple of screws. I’ll get it fixed for you in no time.”
Her breath hitched. She squeezed his flesh hand even harder.
“Winry—”
“I’m sorry I left you.”
“I told you to. You were the only chance we had of getting out and catching those guys.”
“What if you couldn’t have transmuted that barricade?” Ed blinked at the question. “You had already suffered enough so I wouldn’t get hurt. Then you gave me a way out. If they had come back down and seen that I wasn’t there…I don’t even want to think about it….”
Ed swallowed.
“I don’t either, but everything turned out okay.”
It was Winry’s turn to blink. She pointedly looked at his ankle propped up on a pillow and bandages wrapped around his foot.
“You still could’ve said we weren’t together,” she whispered.
“I’ll say it again: I wasn’t going to let them hurt you. I think we both would’ve been worse off if we hadn’t played along.”
Winry sighed but ultimately nodded. She rubbed her eyes and glanced over at her own bed. Before she could get up, Ed shifted over as much as he could. She didn’t hesitate to lay down on the bed beside him. She clutched his arm.
“Thank you.”
Winry didn’t say anything else. Within minutes, her breathing had evened out, and it didn’t take Ed long at all to follow suit.
*break*
Maes stalked down the hall toward the last room on the right. Much to his surprise, he didn’t hear any voices echoing into the hallway. His eyebrows furrowed, and he slowed down when he approached the room. He lingered in the open doorway. Ed was slightly propped up on the pillows, fast asleep, with Winry lying beside him and clutching his arm. The corners of his mouth tugged up into a grin, and it quickly turned into a smile when he saw Roy slumped in a chair in the corner of the room. He shifted and opened his eyes, blinking when they landed on him. He immediately sat up and rubbed them. He was out of the chair and across the room within seconds. Before Maes could even open his mouth, Roy had grabbed him by the arm and dragged him into the nearest stairwell.
“I don’t need you waking them up, Hughes,” Roy grumbled. “I didn’t expect you’d be here so soon. Have they said much?”
Maes sighed, leaning against the wall and stuffing his hands into his pockets.
“Not really. Once we asked Ethan about his wife, he shut down. It’s been nearly five hours and he still hasn’t said another word. The doctor was getting there to check him out right as I was leaving. We have some officers still questioning Noel, but it didn’t look like they’d be finishing anytime soon. How are Ed and Winry?”
“Physically, Winry’s fine. I’m afraid I can’t say the same about Fullmetal. He had to get stitches for the stab wound on his shoulder and the cuts on his feet. It will take at least six weeks for his broken ankle to heal, but his doctor warned me it might take longer than eight.”
Maes flinched.
We’ve seen all the autopsy reports. We know what Noel and Ethan did to their victims, and Winry had to watch….
“Even though Ed had a concussion, he was able to transmute an opening for Winry to escape and call us. He even transmuted a barrier around himself before Ethan and Noel came back.”
“He’s a smart kid, and Winry was incredibly brave to run off on her own like she did.”
Roy grinned at that.
“Ethan and Noel made a huge mistake targeting those two, and they ensured they wouldn’t take any more victims.”
Maes turned around and grabbed the door handle. He was about to turn it when Roy yawned.
“Why don’t I stay with them for a while? No offense, but you look like you could use some proper rest.”
“As long as you don’t wake them up,” Roy grumbled.
They left the stairwell, and Roy peeked into Ed and Winry’s room before waving over his shoulder and walking off down the hall. Maes entered the room, and his eyebrows arched at the sight. Winry had shifted so her head was resting on Ed’s chest, and Ed’s arm wrapped around her shoulders. He smiled.
“Just my automail mechanic” my ass.
