Chapter 1: Sometimes the Strongest Armor Simply isn’t Enough

Chapter Text

Hinata Shoyou knew that reaching the view from the summit wasn’t going to be easy.  Not by a long shot. Granted, it wasn’t until he watched the Tiny Giant playing at the spring Inter High Nationals that Shoyou realized he wanted to. Adding the fact that his height barely reaches over the 164cm mark was just another obstacle in this long trek towards the top. Middle school was just adding insult to injury when, he faced the reality that he would be the only member in the volleyball club though, this turned to be irrelevant since…well…he never backed down. Sure, he got massacred in his first and last game ever in middle school by Kageyama and yes it did hurt. Yet…it taught him the need of self-improvement and that he was never going to achieve his goal by himself.

That being said, Shoyou wasn’t a stranger to loss and failure. How could he be? Shoyou was experiencing it for as long as he could remember. So, losing that match and hearing Kageyama’s taunts might’ve hurt him, but he wasn’t going to let it faze him. After all, it was just the simple truth of his life staring him straight to his face. So, it wasn’t anything new. Shoyou knew very well; he was alone and only just a piece of shit.

Shoyou took a breath while he started to cycle back up the mountain towards house going through these thoughts in his head. Considering he was already used to this harsh predicament, he couldn’t say middle school was all that bad. After all, he did have learning experiences. The only downside was that well…compared to everyone else… he sucked spectacularly. All the progress he’d thought he had achieved was...nonexistent. He shouldn’t be surprised however, things not going his way was the norm of his life.

“You’re not alone anymore.”

That statement popped into his head as clear as day, while he reached the peak of one of the mountains, he had to cross to get home. More surprisingly, it strangely sounded like Suga-san in his head. Then again, Shoyou was glad that it was. Not only was it right and made him feel better but, it was moments like these that he could hold his head up high to bear witness the horrors of his household. As he pedaled through the labyrinth that were the mountain roads, Shoyou braced himself for his living nightmare. After all, there’s a reason whenever he mentions where he lives, he only calls it his house never his home. Despite what everyone else says (A.K.A. Tsukkishima) he wasn’t a moron. Yeah sure, academically I’m not the best but not from lack trying. For him classes always seem too hard so, at some point he decided it was easier to just join in everyone saying he was stupid. It not like anyone was going to say otherwise. Especially in that house well, maybe Natsu. She’s the only reason he even stays there anymore. Shoyou knows that one word to the team and he’s out of there before he can blink. But…he can’t do that to her…leave…separating himself from her. Because…although it’s been hell being in that house for him…at least…she’s been safe…Every slap, kick, punch or whip he has received is one that Natsu hadn’t. He made sure of that. Even if Shoyou had to swallow his screams to maintain his baby sister’s untarnished complexion then so be it. However, he has to admit that his protection isn’t impenetrable. The harsh and heartless words still reach them, more specifically reach her. It does infuriate him to no end that, he cannot stop them from spewing that verbal poison towards her but nonetheless, he makes sure to pick up the pieces fast enough, so the damage isn’t permanent. Or so he hopes.

“Sssshhhh… Imouto it’s ok.”

Shoyou whispers to his baby sister as he gently wipes away the tears striking down her cheeks with the sleeve of his volleyball jersey which was sadly not an uncommon occurrence. Seeing Natsu in this state made his blood boil but, what could he do? He sighed, he knew these weren’t acceptable circumstances but they both agreed to it more or less.

“Nii-chan… -Natsu mumbled between choked tears. – They’re right. I’m dirty, pathetic, and ugly.”

It wasn’t a surprise to Shoyou how his baby sis would prioritize amongst the poison thrown as to what would hurt her the most. Then again, she was just 9 so, it might’ve just meant that she didn’t fully understood what was said. Which, for Shoyou’s ears it was brutal. Not as bad as his own usual verbal beatings but not only was that unimportant, the words thrown to Natsu still hurt her.

“Natsu.” He spoke her name sternly to let her know he was being serious about what he was saying. “That simply isn’t true. You are the prettiest nine-year-old girl I know. In fact, I think you could pass as a princess. So what if you got a bit dirty climbing a tree? If anything that doesn’t make you pathetic. Quite the opposite really.” He flashed her a gentle smile. “Running around and climbing trees with no fear makes you strong. Which… would make you…a warrior princess! Isn’t that cool?”

Natsu’s tears had slowed though, hadn’t ceased. However, she did respond to her nii-chan by nodding slowly. It was only then that her brother continued.

“Anyways, being dirty just means you can take a warm bath afterwards! Right?”

Shoyou once again received a small nod from his Imouto. He notices her eyes getting tired so, he decided to get his point across and get her ready for bed before she fell asleep on top of him.

“Besides, what have I told you about okaasan and Hinata-san?”

Using his dad’s name in reference to that man makes him want to punch a wall. The reality was he wasn’t their father, just a monster their mother married a few months after his dad passed. So, he was their stepfather, but his mother gave everything to him which included their family name. When he first arrived, his mother tried to force him to call him dad, but he put a foot down and; although it ended in blood and bruises, he got his wish. It only backfired when it ended with him hating his own family name. Hell, he barely calls his mother by okaasan anymore, trying not to associate negative thoughts to that word as well. Though, this confirms her loathing towards him when she allows him to call her Yami which is her given name. It’s only when dealing with Natsu that, Shoyou refers to his guardians as they wish because she only knows them that way which is also safer for her. However, he always wanted her to have her eyes open of what was happening around them which is why he is waiting for her to speak the words he drilled into her since she could remember. Patiently, he stared her down until she spoke.

Natsu, for her part still had watery, red eyes but the tears finally ceased. Her nii-chan always does know how to make her feel better but she also knew him well enough to know that she wasn’t getting out without answering him. So, she took a deep albeit shaky breath.

“Okaasan and Hinata-san aren’t our parents; they are simply our guardians in charge of us. They are not family. Family is supposed to love you not hurt you. Imouto and nii-chan are family not them. Never them. Only us.”

Damn…Shoyou thinks as he pedals up the last mountain before his house. That was only a week ago. More so, it wasn’t an uncommon occurrence. Which is why the more Shoyou got exposed to their harsh reality he had come to three conclusions.

  1. Their guardians enjoyed it when they did these atrocities to them.
  2. Yami and her partner did not want them there at all but for some reason wouldn’t abandon them. (Which wasn’t any better he might add.)
  3. He didn’t cherish the time he had with his dad as much as he should have.

All these things he understood before he’d reached grade 3 in elementary school. He knew this was a depressing thought by itself. However, what saddened him the most was that at least he had experienced what a family should be whereas, for his Imouto that was an abstract concept in her mind. Sure, he tries his best to be there for her and protect her and be her everything, but the fact remains that it’s not the same. He knows that. Hell, Shoyou knew he was being a shitty brother by simply taking his sweet ass time arriving to the house and extending his practices for as long as he was allowed. Despite appearances, he thanked the heavens that Kageyama was always more than willing to do so with him. He was ecstatic when Suga-san asked for more practice with him too. Sure, it might look like he was being a horrible brother by leaving her alone with those monsters for so long, but time has taught him that if she was quiet and followed their orders Natsu would be safe. Him on the other hand, they had no such restraint. He could be just staring at a wall and already be in a world of trouble and pain. So, when Natsu finally comprehended what was happening she didn’t hold it against him. If keeping quiet and resistance was her personal armor, then evading and embracing the unavoidable was his.

So, with this conclusion in his mind he parked his bike on the front porch and took a deep breath before quietly opening the front door…

As quietly as he could, Shoyou took off his sneakers and closed the door behind him while setting his bag and jacket in the allocated areas. Shoyou knew he took longer than usual arriving to the house since it was already midnight and practice ended at 10:30pm as usual. He recognized that was already taking an unnecessary risk however, his hope was to find the adults already asleep to skip their usual exchange that with the intense practices and commute were already weighing down on him and they weren’t even a month into the school year. Once he tiptoed past the living area, excitement started to surge through him, thinking he might finally get away with it after so many painful failed attempts.

However, Shoyou should’ve known that fate wouldn’t take kindly to his optimism when it came to this. Its not as if it had shown him anything different these past ten years. The harsh reality stared him right in the face as two people loomed over him. If looks could kill, he would’ve been dead on the spot ten times over. Yami’s eyes were actually considered to be brown however, when fury overcomes her (which was every 5 seconds since he turned six) her eyes turn dark and almost seem black which didn’t help that her hair was exactly that raven shade. As for his stepfather, everything in that man Shoyou considered to be intimidating and frightening from a young age. That was comforting at least, that nothing was left to misinterpretation. So, when he realized their glazed eyes were trained on him, even under the dim lighting of the kitchen Shoyou knew this wasn’t going to end well for him. Considering how much in a good mood he was after he left practice thanks to his senpais, he might’ve talked and fought back. However, as soon as he locked eyes with his Imouto, he sighed. He hadn’t noticed her at first because one, the two intimidating figures took priority and two, she was quietly hidden in the hallway. Anyways, Natsu seemed not only afraid but extremely anxious which could mean two things. Either she received a verbal thrashing herself just moments before which made her scared of her own shadow or she had enough sense that the room was um…dangerous and was scared for him. He could admit that he wasn’t the sharpest tool in the box, but he prided himself being a brother that knew his sister and so, from her face and stature he knew it was probably both.

Much to Shoyou’s dismay, the strong overwhelming scent of beer and shochu went through his nose as one of the monsters before him started to speak.

“Finally decided to grace us with your shitty existence?”

Shoyou heard the slurred muttered sentence by Hinata-san but, considering this wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, the message was clear as day. As he observed Hinata-san unbuckle his belt and Yami went towards the rooms in the back, Shoyou braced himself for the inevitable; controlling all the signals that his body was giving him to run. However, what good would it do? Its not like he was going to leave Natsu by herself and running away with her seemed impossible.

Shoyou didn’t even had time to blink when he felt a giant hand grasp the back of his jacket and he was thrown across the room, only for him to impact the wall headfirst.  Already, Shoyou soon felt the warm crimson liquid streaking his face and his vision becoming foggy however, he knew it was dangerous blacking out so early into his punishment. It would only make it a million times worse when he woke up again. So, shaking his head to at least try to clear his vision and braced himself towards the world of pain.

Natsu has always considered herself as quick minded. After all, her big brother always praised her for being smart. Even saying she was smarter than him. For Natsu, anything her Nii-chan said was always the truth and valid not like Hinata-san and okaasan’s words which were always lies. Though, as she heard the yelps, tears and screams uttered as her precious brother was kicked, punched, and whipped by that man’s belt; Natsu could only think those monsters were right, telling her she was retarded. Even as she watched her brother cry in pain, she realized his thoughts were on her since, between hits he begged her to hide and avoid seeing her nii-chan getting hurt. However, Natsu only froze in her spot, stupidly in her mind. Just observing the horrors thrown at her brother and the more time she just stood there, the more her nii-chan’s pale complexion became a sea of red, black, and blue.

After what it seemed like an eternity, she felt her mother stand next to her which, surprised her since Natsu knew she had left before Hinata-san got his first kick in.  As she looked closer at her mother’s sudden appearance, Natsu’s eyes grew wide in panic. Yami, as her brother called her, was sporting a grin that could only be described as vicious while she locked eyes with her husband but, that wasn’t what terrified her. It was what her mother was holding that she immediately recognized. After all, she not only lived in a mountain, but the house had enough land to own a barn and in said place they kept horses. So, looking at the thin, long stick covered in leather and strips of leather attached she knew what it was. A horse whip and not the ones that had come out recently with shock absorbance that a horse would be just shocked not hurt. No, this was the one that was kept where Shoyou said used to be their dad’s office so, this was from their dad’s ancestors which, probably meant that it could be from their great-grandfather or even further back. That being said, Natsu loved to read ever since she could remember, and it wasn’t limited to fiction. Consequently, she knew that a horse’s skin was thicker and harder than a human’s so people made these whips harder to compensate for this. Her brother didn’t stand a chance. She was about to speak in his defense when she heard the crack the of the whip and her worst fears just stared straight at her face.

A sharp painful cry filled the room that, Natsu didn’t know her brother still had in him since she thought he had yelled his throat raw tonight with the beating he had already received. Though, what finally took her out of her stupor was after the third lash, as her eyes observed the picture of her brother’s white school t-shirt and black jersey pants ripped to shreds because of the lashes that came in. What made this image worse was how the shirt quickly turned from a pure white to angry crimson red that, she knew came from her brother’s blood which also were starting to come out of his legs as well. Natsu knew she had to do something, or her brother wasn’t going to survive the night.

Thankfully, her brain had finally shocked itself out of the blank paralysis it was in. She quickly took her brother’s bags that he had left on the floor and practically sprinted to his room without a second thought, in fear her mother would stop her before she could put her plan in action.

Once in her brother’s bedroom, she quickly went around it and opened his closet and drawers emptying it of all his clothes and personal items he might have and then placed everything in the two bags she had taken and an extra backpack she found there. Even then, she was sad and glad that her brother barely owned anything since everything they bought was with their guardian’s allowance which, was basically nonexistent 99% of the time. Hell, most of his clothes are from middle school. In a speed that was reminiscent of her brother’s, she wiped the entire room clean.

The final item was one of her brother’s prized possessions which, she had placed under a protective layer of clothes in his favorite bag. It was an album with photos of him and their dad right up until he died which, meant the oldest Shoyou was in those pictures is six years old.  Natsu knew he treasured it so much because it’s the only pictures they have of him since, their mother decided to delete him from their lives so much that she destroyed the other pictures, and this was the only one he could smuggle before she got her hands on it. If it wasn’t for this album that Shoyou kept deep in his closet under the floorboards inside a pillow sac, Natsu wouldn’t have known what her actual father looked like.

Tears sliding down her cheeks, Natsu grabbed the three bags and gave the room a once-over. The room was now completely bare, if anyone would come in here, they would’ve never guessed that this was once her brother’s room.

Another sharp scream filled her ears, which was what got Natsu to her feet and dashed through the hall with bags in hand to arrive back to the living room where her brother was covered in blood on the floor. Shoyou’s only movement was his ragged breathing. So, before Hinata-san could land another blow with the now crimson whip, Natsu exclaimed.

“STOP IT! YOU’LL KILL HIM!”

At that exact moment Natsu felt all eyes bore into her which, was usually a terrible sign but, she wasn’t going to back down. She even heard her brother speak faintly. Natsu, no… But she paid it no mind, it was time she repaid her brother for all those times he protected her and just loved her throughout her life when no one else inside that house did. So, she did not falter when she returned her gaze back at Hinata-san who glared at her while she spoke.

“And why should we do as you say brat? Or is it that you want to take his place?”

Natsu went stiff as she heard those words but, she barreled through to continue with her plan because, now was her only chance and for her brother’s safety she couldn’t back out. Shoyou never did for her and so, neither would she. Taking a deep breath she chose her next words carefully.

“Hinata-san, okaasan, I have a proposal for you.”

Natsu said those words calmly and just like she thought they would, her mother took the bait as okaasan placed an arm over her husband’s shoulder to pause the whippings and stared straight into Natsu’s eyes with her obsidian orbs. They were not only calculating and scrutinizing what Natsu wanted but also, had a hunger for something. As if trying to switch roles and bait Natsu instead. Though, Natsu knew what her mother wanted. After all, where did she get those wits, her brother always praised her on?

Yami wasn’t going to be pushed over by the sorry excuse she had for a daughter so, she played along. Besides, the higher the pedestal the harder the fall and, that was just going to make this interaction a whole lot sweeter.  And so, she replied.

“Very well then, Natsu. What is your proposal?”

At this, Natsu inwardly smiled since, they were playing right into her hands and even better, their mother had allowed Shoyou a breather while they talked which, if her plan was successful, it was going to be crucial for her nii-chan. That being said, Natsu took a deep breath to disclose her proposal in its completion in quick succession because otherwise, she could run the risk of being interrupted or outright rejected.

“It’s perfectly clear that both of you hate Shoyou to the point that you don’t want him living in your vicinity, right?” Natsu didn’t miss a beat as she continued. “Then, why not make things easier for all parties involved and just let him leave this place to never come back? I know you keep him here for one reason only so, I’m going to make an offer you can’t refuse. Simply put, once he steps foot out of this house, you disown him. Take away everything. His name, his inheritance, and your responsibility towards him will disappear. Everything dad left him will be yours and neither of you will have to deal with each other again. It will be as if you never had a son and…” Natsu took a breath and decided to put everything on the table because everyone in that room bar maybe her brother who was mostly out of it at the moment, knew what Yami really wanted from them. “All the money from his inheritance that you’ve been dying to have will be yours. Essentially, most of what you’ve wanted these past few years will be fulfilled without much hassle. However, you can’t hurt him anymore and he leaves tonight.”

Natsu finally took a breath and she observed her mother as she calculated her options in those intense obsidian orbs. She knew she was making it hard on her nii-chan by making him leave right that moment with all the injuries he had but, she just wanted him as safe and far away as possible. Deep in thought, she almost jumped out her skin when she heard okaasan call her name.

Yami stared straight into her daughter’s eyes with a malicious smirk on her face when she finally got her attention. Oh she had to give it to the kid, she had some wits herself. Too bad her brother lacked the basic brain cells. However, she didn’t care, she was just glad of the things presented on a silver platter.

“Natsu, I accept your proposal. And to show you my good will, I will give you ten minutes to help your brother pack everything, say goodbye and be on his way using his bike. However, make no mistake. By this time tomorrow he will no longer be your brother and if by the end of the time I’ve given you he hasn’t left yet; I will personally throw him outside in the dirt.”

Natsu’s eyes grew wide but otherwise she didn’t react. “Understood.”

“Good. Then we will leave you to it. Oh, and congratulations daughter, you’ve proven to be as conniving as your mother.”

Natsu almost choked at hearing that last part but, decided that it was just better not to respond since, her brother took priority, and she simply didn’t want to think about her mother’s poisonous comments towards her right now.

As soon as those monsters disappeared towards the hallway, Natsu kneeled in front of her brother whose face and hair was matted with blood but was happy to see that his eyes were wide open. So, she gently nudged him to help him sit up.

“Come on, nii-chan! You have to get up! Please!”

Shoyou for the most part followed his imouto’s orders but, couldn’t keep the sadness and disappointment from his blood-stained face. So with a quiet voice caused by his yell induced raw throat he spoke.

“Imouto, what have you done?”

Natsu for her part, knew that they were in a tight time frame and never stopped for a second as she spoke to her nii-chan. She was taking his volleyball jersey jacket to gently zip it on him when, she responded.

“What are you talking about nii-chan? I just made it so they couldn’t hurt you anymore.”

Shoyou was hurting all over and probably didn’t have strength to stand but, he did stare at his sister indignantly. “No, Natsu. That’s not what you did. If I’m not here, who will protect you? They’d only have you as a target.”

Natsu knew this debate would be coming so, she took a deep breath so she could cut off her brother before they ran out of time. “Stop overreacting. You had weights tying you here so, I simply cut them off. Besides, now you can go off and fly somewhere safe and once you’re settled then you can come get me. Until then, I can hold off on my own. I’m smart, remember?”

Even with the headache that was threatening to split open his already injured head, Shoyou cocked his head at his sister’s words. “Hey, watch your tone and stop being cocky. I know I’m a mess right now but that doesn’t take away the fact that I’m still your big brother. That being said…” Shoyou sighed, trying to compose himself for the next thing he was going to say. “I know you’re smart and you’re good at thinking on the fly, but you don’t know what would happen if I left. Who’s to say that they won’t get worse? You could get hurt or even worse, get killed. As your big brother I simply won’t run that risk. Do you understand?”

She knew she was being a bit disrespectful to her nii-chan, but she needed to make him leave despite, what the backlash would be. “I don’t care! Yes, I understand what you’re saying but just as you won’t permit yourself to risk my safety; I won’t permit you to get whipped to death. So stop being an idiot by making this harder and go! We only have five minutes so please.”

Shoyou saw as his sister was fighting off tears, but he could feel his wounds rubbing against his jacket that were on fire. He doubted he had the strength to stand much less, ride his bike.

Suddenly, the voices of the people he cherished the most after his sister filled his ears.

“C’mon Sho, you got this!” Noya-san’s loud voice made its presence.

“Yeah! Shoyou do it for your favorite senpai!” Tanaka’s boisterous self could be heard.

His head continued on this mantra with his teammates giving their usual types of encouragement with even Kageyama calling him a dumbass as per usual. All their voices started blending together until, it peaked into a complete silence. Not unlike how the gym ended up when their captain wanted silence. So, it was no surprise when, it was his captain that he heard next.

“Take it easy Hinata. Just take it one step at a time. You can do it. I know you can.”

It wasn’t uncommon to have their captain accompanied by his vice so, it was no surprise to Shoyou when he heard Sugawara-senpai’s voice next.

“It’s ok Shoyou. Just breath and take the first step. Come home. You’ll be safe. I promise. Just come to us. We got you.”

It was then that, with tears in his eyes, he came back to reality and noticed that his sister had put his running shoes on his feet and tied his laces as neatly as she could. There was no fighting his Imouto on this so, gritting his teeth as the sharp pain overwhelmed him as, he moved himself to stand. Though, with the voices of his teammates still resonated in his head, he willed himself to stand and looked at his Imouto with sad eyes.

“Fine, Imouto. I’ll do as you wish.”

Natsu now had tears rolling down her face but, couldn’t hide the feeling of relief from her face. “Thank you, nii-chan.” She grabbed his bags and gestured him to follow her outside where his bike was parked.

Shoyou didn’t know if it was the motivational mantra that he kept in head or that the reality of the feat that he was going to do was creeping into him filling him with adrenaline, but he was able to jog behind Natsu to reach his bike.

Natsu was already steadying her brother’s bike when she spoke. “Get on the bike nii-chan.” However, she noticed her brother’s patience was running thin with her ordering him around since, she could feel his cold glare throwing daggers at her. One thing is for certain, her nii-chan was a ball of sunshine to everyone around him but, he was terrifying when angered. So, Natsu didn’t even hide it when she looked at Shoyou sheepishly saying, “Gomen, nii-chan. Can you please get on the bike?”

Seeing his sister soften, Shoyou proceeded to get on his bike. He realizes that this is a goodbye, and he shouldn’t be mad at her but, if he’d left her run that silver tongue of hers it would only be more trouble for her later. Since Yami and Hinata-san didn’t want either of them, its not like disciplining Natsu was happening properly.  So essentially, raising Natsu ended up being his job and he was not going to slack off even as he left. Once he got the response he wanted from her, he responded.

“Better.” Shoyou climbed onto his bike albeit slowly and with some difficulty. He was going to grab his bags when Natsu stopped him.

No longer wanting to snap at her brother, Natsu spoke softly. “It’s ok nii-chan, I’ll do it. Just take your volleyball bag the way you usually wear it since it’s the lightest one and won’t hurt your injuries much. I’ll tie the other two tightly on your bike, they won’t be going anywhere.”

“Thank you, Imouto.” Shoyou sighed, disappointed by all the things his baby sister has had to do tonight since he was useless at the moment.

“No problem, nii-chan! Now you have to leave quickly since, our time is almost up and I think I can hear okaasan coming towards us. I love you very much. Goodbye.”

Upon hearing those words, Shoyou couldn’t hold it any longer and started sobbing uncontrollably. However, he knew he had to speak. So, taking a shuddering breath and looking straight at her he spoke.

“I don’t want to do this Imouto. I love you with all my life.”

She didn’t waste time trying to refute him, Natsu simply started pushing the bike forward which forced Shoyou to start pedaling. Still keeping pace with him, she responded. “I love you too, nii-chan. Just promise to be safe, ok?”

“I promise, Imouto. And I swear to you, I’ll come back to get you out of here. I love you.”

They were already at the gate which, signaled the limit of the property. So, Natsu let her brother ruffle and kiss the top of her head before they gave each other their final goodbyes. However, it wasn’t long before Shoyou went on what would be a treacherous ride in his condition to who knows where and was finally out of her sight.  Leaving her to think on one the last words her brother said to her.

“I swear to you, I’ll come back to get you out of here.”

These thoughts only made tears slide down her face since, only one thought popped into her head.

“Only if the gods will it, dear brother. Only if the gods will it.”

That didn’t guarantee her anything for her future but, at least, she gave her brother a chance of one and that’s all she hope for. This glimpse of hope is what made her resignedly return to the house.

The ride throughout the mountain roads were honestly just a blur for Shoyou. He didn’t even think of where he was going, Shoyou only had one thought in his head. Safe. Where is it safe?

Somehow in his adrenaline induced state, he reached the bike racks of Karasuno High School and Shoyou didn’t even question it. He simply did what he did every morning, his feet leading the way before even he could register what was going on, with his three bags in hand completely ignoring the trail of blood he was leaving behind.

Kuso!

Shoyou cursed as he tried to open the clubroom door and he realized it was locked. He forgot it wasn’t his turn with the key. The little strength he had was already bleeding out of him and it was freezing cold outside. Rapidly searching around to see what he could do when; he noticed the small window and an interaction he had with Kageyama came into mind.

“Hinata boke, let’s sneak in through the window. It might be open.”

“Are you insane bakayama?! If we get caught, we’ll be in serious trouble!”

They didn’t have to think about it much since, at that moment Tanaka-senpai had arrived with the keys.

Though, it was barely 3 in the morning and his teammates wouldn’t be arriving until at least, 6am in Kageyama’s case.  So, other than freezing outside, his only option was the window which, to his excitement was open.

Without wasting anymore time, he shoved his duffel bags through the window which fell inside with a thump. Shoyou was never gladder for his short stature since, it meant he could easily fit through the window but in his haste, he cut his hands with the window frame. However, since he was already riddled in cuts and bruises which, were already causing him pain Shoyou didn’t even know his hands were also now covered in blood. His only thoughts once inside were that, even though the heater wasn’t on, it was much better than outside and that he was dead tired. So, without another thought, he placed his duffels in the far-right corner to use them as pillows and ignoring the fact that his whole back stung and his jacket was soaked with blood, he took it off and draped it over him like a blanket before he let unconsciousness finally overcome him.
