He who Perseveres, Achieves (Or not)

Summary:

Nitroglycerin, also known as C3H5N3O9, is an organic compound, a mix of nitric acid, sulfuric acid and glycerin. It’s an oily, colorless (or pale yellow when acidic) ester that is poorly soluble in water. This compound is highly explosive, liquid at room temperature, very sensitive to movement and friction and ignition. It’s quite difficult to work with it, though nitroglycerin is greatly used for explosives production. Exposure to nitroglycerin without proper equipment is incredibly dangerous.

Excessive and uncontrolled use can be lethal.

Here’s why not stopping till the end is not a good motivational quote after all.

Or-

In which Bakugou simply decides to overwork himself to death- quite literally.

Notes:

I read this thing for the first time since I've posted it. Holy fuck it's so bad I'm actually considering deleting it. The small nitroglycerin research I wrote in the first ch is so bad and all over the place + shitty English (I'm bad at essays, shut up) and format errors. Don't kill me it's my first fic ever

Chapter 1

Summary:

Bakugou blinked lazily, trying to pay attention. He felt tired. The day before he'd left his hearing aids on for too long and he ended up with a headache. He'd stayed up late studying- or so he thinks. Maybe he'd passed out on top of his desk and didn't wake up until his alarm rang in the morning. That would explain why his neck hurt so much, though. But he wasn't going to back down, he wasn't. If only he could see clearly-

Notes:

I just noticed that when Iida is sent to get Recovery Girl, he acts like he didn't know what had happened when he gets back lmao. Why is no one telling me these things, fuck

I will also be editing some stuff, here and there, because this english is FOUL.

Chapter Text

Nitroglycerin, also known as C3H5N3O9, is an organic compound, a mix of nitric acid, sulfuric acid and glycerin. It’s an oily, colorless (or pale yellow when acidic) ester that is poorly soluble in water. This compound is highly explosive, liquid at room temperature, very sensitive to movement and friction and ignition. It’s quite difficult to work with it, though nitroglycerin is greatly used for explosives production. In the medical field, however, nitroglycerin- well, glyceryl trinitrate would be the most fitting term. Several pharmacologists believe that should be its official name, since there’s not (… or shouldn’t be) any ‘nitro’ in ‘nitroglycerin’ of medical use, but nitroglycerin is more popular, so…- works as a vasodilator and treatment of different illnesses and conditions, such as asthma and hypertension.

As nitroglycerin is a highly toxic substance, even glycerin trinitrate (medical use nitro) has some side effects that might occur. These side effects are headaches, nausea and tachycardia. It’s also possible to develop tolerance after long-term use.

Exposure to nitroglycerin (the lethal one, it’s important to know the difference) without proper equipment is incredibly dangerous.

Inhaling might cause headache, dizziness and nausea.

Consuming might cause shock.

Even stopping exposure after having developed tolerance can cause heart failure and, consequently, death. But that doesn’t happen often (we hope).

Basically, it’s a bitch.

Thankfully, Bakugou’s explosions don’t come from nitroglycerin itself, but from a ‘modified’ compound, which basically wipes out the most lethal side effect- make no mistake, by lethal it means won’t die from directly using his quirk. If he uses incorrectly, however…but not all of them.

Bakugou has hypotension, or low blood pressure. This means his heart, body and brain don’t get enough blood. Normally, you’d think the body would adapt itself to overcome the quirk so it doesn’t hurt its holder…

Wrong.

While the compound Bakugou segregates from his hands isn’t immediately lethal, there are side effects and its misuse can be very dangerous.

Hypotension is quite an inconvenient in the pro-hero career. See, stress, training or any kind of effort made will cause blood pressure to rise, which is actually beneficial. However, when the body doesn’t need any extra blood, blood pressure lowers, maybe even lower than normal blood pressure, which can last up to 13 hours after training. This is a problem for people with this condition, since they might experience dizziness and even fainting.

Excessive and uncontrolled use can be lethal.

Here’s why not stopping till the end is not a good motivational quote after all.

Aizawa was not getting paid enough for this shit.

He had been prepared for blood, to fight even if it meant death, to save everyone even if he got hurt in the process, for, to look at Death’s face every day, to… A long etcetera.

But stubborn teenagers? Yeah, no. That wasn’t on the contract.

He should have known it would end like this. The second he met the boy, he knew. He understood that Bakugou was a dedicated, hard-working kid, but really, he should have known that, at the end of the day, the kid would overwork himself to the point of having no social interactions besides training or barely getting out of his room to eat or snapping at everyone if he heard as much as a cough or… Yeah.

We’ve been through this already, he remembered. And they had. He’d had a talk with Bakugou about overworking- Well, it was more like Aizawa telling Bakugou to stop being an idiot and Bakugou cussing him out- but Aizawa thought that the kid had understood, so something like that wouldn’t happen again.

(We don’t talk about what ‘that’ is.)

Clearly, he hadn’t.

It seems that the kid couldn’t acknowledge, couldn’t even fathom the fact that all that extreme effort would eventually tire his body out, tire him out.

Be that way, then. If the kid wanted to learn the hard way, then he would. It was clear that Aizawa’s words weren’t getting inside his thick head. All heroes learn to rest in one way or another, just like I did.

It’s for the best, his mind supplied.

“Bakubro, wanna spar?” asked Kirishima.

“Can’t. Got to finish that goddamn English essay,” replied Bakugou.

“But that’s due on two weeks!”

“Hey, B. I’ve got this new album. Wanna listen to it together?” asked Jirou.

“Not now, Ears. I’m going to Ground Beta,” replied Bakugou.

“Do you even have permission to do that…?”

“Hey, man. Are we still going to study group with the Squad?” asked Sero.

“I’m gonna study on my own today. You idiots are too damn noisy," replied Bakugou.

“Bakugou, you’re deaf.”

“Bakugou, it has been two hours past curfew! Where were you?” asked Iida.

“Relax, Glasses. I was just running around,” replied Bakugou.

“Hello, Bakugou. Do you wish to train tonight? Dark Shadow claims he’s discovered a way to win against your explosions,” asked Tokoyami.

“Next time, Birdbrain. I’m studying,” replied Bakugou, he then squinted his eyes suspiciously. “I wanna know how he pretends to do that, though.”

“You shouldn’t push yourself too hard, Kacchan,” scolded Midoriya.

“Shut the fuck up, Deku.”

“Ugh.” groaned Mina. “Thank God it’s over, my arms are gonna fall off.”

Meanwhile, Denki propped himself into the sofa. “I’m gonna take a nap, wake me up never.”

“Wait for me,” said Sero, lying down on top of him.

“Come on, idiots. You all still fuckin’ suck at math,” he growled, grabbing Kaminari’s ankle from the sofa’s armrest and tugging on it harshly. “The fucking exam is on Wednesday.”

Kirishima furrowed his eyebrows at Bakugou’s fierce tone.

“Dude, it’s Thursday. We still have a week”, he argued.

“If we don’t do it now, you’ll whine about it the entire fucking week,” he retorted sharply. “Kaminari barely gets a thing on a two-hour class.”

Said blonde looked a bit hurt upon hearing Bakugou’s cold comment, but quickly feigned disinterest hoping that he’d get the explosive boy to calm down.

“Come on, you need a break, old man!” he offered light-heartedly, holding up a Nintendo Switch, likely his, he’d grabbed from the table near the sofa.

“Let’s have fun! I bought this new game-

Bakugou released a warning explosion from his hand.

He looked furious.

“I don’t fucking care,” he hissed, frighteningly quiet. “If we have a week or a month.”

“How are you gonna become half-decent heroes if you just let your… fucking job wait ‘cause you’re all just too fucking lazy and dumb to fucking care, huh?!”

The group gaped.

Without another word, he left.

The Squad glanced at each other silently.

This… was new.

Well, not that new.

They all knew how important grades are to Bakugou, it was obvious to anyone. But, ever since the finals were announced, he’s been spending all his free time either training or studying.

And he was irritable, all the time.

Bakugou’s always had a short fuse, snapping at anything he found mildly annoying.

But now? He was just mean.

Not being able to stand the silence, Kaminari spoke, annoyed. “What’s wrong with him? Not my fault he doesn’t like having fun,” Kirishima glared at him.

“Don’t say that.”

“Why are you defending him?” Kaminari called him out.

“I’m not defending him,” argued Kirishima. “What he said wasn’t right, but you don’t get to talk like that. Bakugou’s been very stressed lately,” Kaminari rolled his eyes.

“We’re all stressed, Kiri, and we don’t take it out on our friends.”

Kirishima realized he couldn’t defend Bakugou any further.

“You’re right, I’m sorry,” he sighed. “I’m going to my room; you guys can play without me.”

Bakugou was not having a good time.

His head hurt and sparring left his body aching all over. He wished he could just sleep it off, but he had to look into next Ectoplasm’s class. He couldn’t bring himself to slack off. He wouldn’t risk failing.

As you should, he thought.

With some difficulty, he took out his notes and started writing.

Kirishima was also not having a good time.

He was worried about his friend.

He knew he should be upset about his friend’s hurtful comment.

But he couldn’t help not taking it to heart, alright? It wasn’t something he did consciously. He knew Bakugou had issues. Very weird, concerning anger issues.

But he also knew that Bakugou was a caring person, kind in his own way.

He didn’t demonstrate it with words, but with his actions.

Like cooking for everyone in the class.

Or helping others in training when they didn’t get it right.

Or when he tried to cheer up Uraraka when she was feeling insecure about her worth in battle. (He wasn’t doing a good job, but even trying to do something surely helped.)

Or tutoring his friend for almost every subject even though he acts annoyed about it.

Everything he does, he does it in his own pissy way.

But Kirishima knew he cared. Everyone knew.

That’s why Kirishima appreciated their friendship, he knew he could always count on Bakugou. He just wanted Bakugou to do the same.

They’d known each other for two years, and Bakugou had hardly opened up to him.

There were hardly any situations in which Bakugou talked about his feelings. He didn’t know how to, so he trained and trained and trained until he couldn’t anymore, and Kirishima feared it would eventually break him.

He wished he could do something to help his friend.

That’s why he was so worried.

As he walked past Bakugou’s dorm, he feared.

"Alright, Class. Here's what we're going to do today", Aizawa said, arm outstretched pointing at a huge battle field. "We'll be focusing on your fighting and reflexes. I will choose your opponents, so shut up. Now…"

Bakugou blinked lazily while trying to pay attention.

"... Bakugou and Yaoyorozu, you go first."

His sight snapped back up from his quite interesting shoes to look at Yaoyorozu. She seemed hesitant. Did she think he wasn't strong enough? Well, he'd show her what he was capable of. He wasn't going to lose.

“Kaminari against Uraraka, Midoriya against Ojiro, Bakugou against Yaoyorozu…”

Yaoyorozu nodded and looked over the crowd who were her classmates, looking for Bakugou. There she saw him, standing next to Kirishima. He looked… not good. He looked pale and sweaty; his eyebrows furrowed- more than usual. The whole class knew how stressed Bakugou could get in exams times, but most simply thought he was just a nerd. What told her that something was actually wrong, though, was the concern written all over Kirishima’s face. He wasn’t smiling like he usually does. He was looking at Aizawa-sensei, but his mind clearly was somewhere else, glancing at Bakugou from time to time. It looked like Aizawa had noticed Bakugou’s state, too, even though he didn’t show it, if the subtle glances have anything to say about it.

I wonder if Aizawa-sensei will say anything, she thought. Is it really safe for him to battle in this state?

It wasn’t safe. She knew that, but she trusted her fellow classmate to know his limits and her teacher to know when to stop them, in case something went wrong.

"... Bakugou and Yaoyorozu, you go first."

Her train of thought had stopped just in time to notice that Aizawa-sensei was calling for them. Hesitantly, she stepped forward, looking at Aizawa-sensei but then trying to give Bakugou a confident look. She hoped it worked, but he just glared at her, lips grimaced.

Suddenly, she wasn’t so confident of her previous statement.

While Aizawa watched his students step into the field, he sighed, rubbing his hand over his scalp. He was focused on Bakugou especially, watching as he walked. He looked off. His eyes unfocused, his skin pale, his walking kind of clumsy. He sighed again, the kid was sick. He walked towards Bakugou to stand beside him.

“Kid, are you okay?”, he whispered, he didn’t want to draw attention to them.

“I’m fine,” said kid mumbled. Of course he’s fine.

“You know, if you need to step out for this one, we won’t judge you. There’s no shame in taking a break.”

“Shut up, Sensei. I’m fine,” Bakugou snarled. Aizawa sighed, there wasn’t much he could do. If the kid wanted to be stubborn, then so be it. He was too tired for this shit. He'll learn the hard way, he remembered.

“If you say so…”, he finally said. Looking ahead, he shouted “Are you ready?!”

Both students nodded.

“Fight!”

Fuck, Bakugou thought. Only five minutes had passed since the battle started, but he already felt at his limit. He had got up after Yaoyorozu smashed him into the ground with a catapult. But if she gets him again, he won’t be able to keep going, just because he was a little tired, he was going to lose-

He let out an animal-like growl. Then, he propelled himself into the air with a huge explosion. The class watched in awe as Yaoyorozu quickly took a basketball-sized ball out of her chest. It was made out of an almost soft material, like a tennis ball. Since they were just training and not in a real fight, she didn’t want to actually hurt Bakugou.

She quickly placed the ball in the catapult and released it, catching Bakugou mid-air. It hit him right on his chest. He hit the ground hard, and the whole class cringed. That hurt. He was able to soften the fall somehow, but it still was a harsh blow. Yaoyorozu noticed she had gone too far and stopped, looking at him carefully.

Bakugou could barely breathe. God, his chest hurt. No oxygen was reaching his lungs, but he still could, still had to keep going. He wasn’t a loser, he was victory itself. He couldn’t afford to lose in battle, not if he was going to become the Number One Hero. He was going to continue, he was going to get up. Get up, you good-for-nothing scoundrel.

With incredible difficulty, he got to his feet. He could barely stand on his two legs, he was dizzy and could not see well. The pain in his head blurred his vision. In the distance, he could make out Yaoyorozu's silhouette. Why did she stop? The fight wasn't over yet. With a snarl, he propelled himself towards her as hard as his weakened arms could. Which was hard, he was sweating so much that the explosion he let out was huge, so big his arms ached. With incredible speed, he rammed Yaoyorozu with his body, throwing her off the field.

"Yaoyorozu is out of the combat field, Bakugou wins!"

Half the class celebrated Bakugou's victory, mainly the Bakusquad, while the other half lamented Yaoyorozu's defeat. Jirou went over to help her up, celebrating the way she fought and the strategies she used. The Bakusquad approached the field, waiting for Bakugou to come down to greet him with excited words.

"Jirou and Tokoyami, you're next. Yaoyorozu and Bakugou, you go to the infirmary to have your wounds checked. Bakugou, come down from..."

Bakugou's ears were ringing. He was panting like never before, but it didn't seem to be enough. His legs were shaking and he couldn't stand up straight. His chest felt tight, and it hurt like a bitch. Sweat dripped from his face like a river, he was too hot.

He could faintly recall Aizawa calling his name, but he couldn’t answer; he felt so nauseous that if he opens his mouth, he might vomit. Oh, right. He had to get off the field, the battle was over. He took a step forward, heading towards his squad. He couldn't make out the look on their faces, he was too dizzy, but they were silent. They must be disappointed at how horribly you did, you animal.

As he trudged along, halfway, his legs gave out beneath him, and he fell. Not against the ground, but in a warm embrace. He could hear the surprised cries of his classmates, but not understand what it meant, because he quickly lost consciousness.

“Go, Bakugou!”

“Yaoyorozu!”

The class watched with excitement as the combat unfolded before their eyes. The battle had begun with a ranged strike by Yaoyorozu, she knew that getting close to the explosions was certain death, so she decided to use a ball-throwing machine, which she had made with her quirk. It was somewhat small, as she wasn't looking to consume her energy that quickly, she just wanted it to fall into her trap.

There, Yaoyorozu thought. She had distracted him long enough with the balls to get him close to the catapult she had created. With a great leap, she kneed Bakugou in the stomach, who, with a surprised grunt of pain, was propelled into the catapult. The catapult caught him and pinned him down, then hurled him into the air. He hit the ground.

“Oof,” said Kaminari. Sero cringed

“That had to hurt,” he said

Mina grinned, “Go, Yaomomo!”.

Both Kaminari and Sero stared at her.

“What? I want to support her.”

"Haven't you noticed that Bakugou is acting strange?", Kirishima suddenly said.

The three looked at Kirishima with confused looks. He watched the fight with a frown, and the others followed suit. He was right. Bakugou's movements were clumsy and uncoordinated. They watched as he stood up with great difficulty, the limp in his left leg noticeable.

Mina opened her mouth to speak, but a huge explosion interrupted her. The Squad and the entire class watched as Bakugou launched himself at Yaoyorozu like a rocket, ramming her and knocking her off the battlefield. While Bakugou lay on the ground face down, panting like a dog. He got up, wobbling on his legs. The Squad began to cheer on him, and Kirishima dropped his concern in favor of celebrating his best friend's victory.

Aizawa nodded with a satisfied smile. He then addressed the class, saying "Jirou and Tokoyami, you're next. Yaoyorozu and Bakugou, go to the infirmary to have your wounds checked. Bakugou, come down from there, you're going to be checked too. Class, after all of you fight, I'll give you all a review of how... Bakugou?"

Bakugou hadn’t moved an inch. But upon realizing that Aizawa was calling him, he turned to his friends and walked. They seemed to have noticed his poor state, and watched him intently.

Just as Kirishima stepped forward to catch him in case he fell, Bakugou's knees buckled, and he began to fall forward. With incredible reflexes, Kirishima caught him in his arms. He was dead weight, all of his weight being supported by Kirishima, and he deduced that Bakugou was completely unconscious.

“Aizawa-sensei!”, he yelled. In a second, Aizawa was in front of him, taking Bakugou from him to carry him himself.

He quickly carried him down the field, Kirishima following, to lay him down where the class had made room for them. Everyone looked at him with concern, even Yaoyorozu, who had decided to stay and assist upon hearing the commotion. Aizawa knelt beside him, calling his name.

“Bakugou, can you hear me?”, he said, pressing Bakugou’s clavicles roughly with his thumbs. Not even a twitch. “Bakugou?”

He was too still. Fuck.

“Iida, go get Recovery Girl! Bring an AED, too. Yaoyorozu, go with him and stay there, you still need to be checked”, he yelled. Iida nodded and bolted using his quirk. Yaoyorozu seemed to want to rebut, but eventually went the way Iida had run off, albeit much slower.

He turned to Midoriya. "Midoriya, call an ambulance. This is beyond what we can deal with."

He returned to Bakugou. Tilt head back, check for breathing, he thought methodically. He lifted Bakugou’s chin with one hand as to open his airway, then lowered his head next to his parted lips, listening while he looked intently at his chest. No sound was heard nor air was felt on Aizawa’s cheek, Bakugou’s chest still.

No breathing, perform CPR. “Sero, do you remember your first-aid lessons?”, he said, looking at the boy. He nodded, teary eyed. “I need you to do rescue breaths, can you do that?”

“Y-Yeah.”

He went back to Bakugou. Chest compressions. He placed the heel of his left hand on the center the blonde’s chest, then placing his right hand on top of the left, intertwining his fingers. He pressed down his chest hardly yet steadily, keeping a pace. Not too fast but also not too slow. He counted out loud for Sero to follow him. He could feel Bakugou’s ribs giving out under his hands with every compression. Broken ribs were a common occurrence during CPR, but hopefully, with good technique, he could prevent that.

“… Twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty”, he looked at Sero, who had placed himself in front of Aizawa.

He didn’t even glance at his teacher. He tilted Bakugou’s head back and slightly parted his lips a bit more. He listened for breathing for a moment and began rescue breaths when no response was given. He pinched the blonde’s nose with two fingers and sealed his mouth over the other’s, blowing steadily. After a second, he lifted his head and watched as the boy’s chest fell. He gave another breath. No response.

Aizawa started compressions again. The class watched in fear as their teacher tried to save their classmate’s life. How did this happen? One second he was standing and fighting, and the next he was on the ground, unresponsive. Midoriya was mumbling incoherently, tears in his eyes.

“Where the fuck is Iida?” Jirou snarled desperately.

“Here!”

Iida arrived just in time to see Sero breathing for Bakugou. He gasped.

Recovery Girl climbed off the blue-haired boy's back, approaching the pair doing CPR, AED in hand.

“The ambulance should be here any moment now. Iida, h-he's not breathing…” Midoriya sobbed, he couldn’t believe what was happening.

Uraraka put a hand on his shoulder, looking at the old nurse, trying to console him. “We don’t know what happened. He looked off the whole match and then…”, she went quiet.

Both, as well as their classmates, stared at the group assisting Bakugou as Recovery Girl put two pads on his bare chest, his shirt long gone, while Aizawa keeps doing compressions. Sero kept distance from Recovery Girl to let her work, but still close enough to keep delivering breaths.

Aizawa stopped pressing down Bakugou’s chest to let Sero breathe for his student. Recovery Girl put a hand on his shoulder right after he finished.

“Stand back for a moment, dear”, she said.

She pressed the ‘analyze’ button.

“Evaluating heart rhythm…”

“…Shock advised.”

Recovery Girl moved away from Bakugou, “Stand back, everyone.”

“Do not touch the patient… Delivering shock.”

Bakugou’s body tensed for a second before going still.

“Shock delivered. Continue CPR.”

Aizawa and Sero did as they were told.

The sound of sirens reached their ears. Most sighed in relief, but others were still tense, knowing that Bakugou wasn’t out of the woods yet.

“How long has it been?”, Kaminari cried.

Sero delivered breaths.

“Five minutes…?”, said Mina.

The AED delivered a shock.

“Shock delivered. Analyzing… Continue CPR”

Kirishima wiped tears off his face.

“Wake up, man”, he whispered.

The group finally saw an ambulance coming their way. Shouji waved his arm so to make clear where they needed them. The ambulance stopped abruptly in front of them, and two paramedics came out from the back. They immediately ran towards the boy on the ground.

“Name’s Yakumo. She’s Ryuuji. How long have you been doing CPR?”, he asked as Ryuuji took over compressions.

Aizawa nodded to both of them. “About five minutes. We started CPR immediately after he fell.”

Yakumo took out an AMBU bag, covering Bakugou’s mouth and nose with it. He pumped the balloon rhythmically.

“How many shocks have been delivered?”, Ryuuji asked between compressions.

“Two. We got the AED two minutes through CPR”, Aizawa responded.

Ryuuji stopped compressions. She pressed the ‘analyze’ button.

“Evaluating heart rhythm… Shock advised.”

“Clear the patient, please”, Yakumo said.

“Do not touch the patient… Delivering shock.”

Bakugou’s body tensed.

“Shock delivered. Analyzing… Continue CPR.”

Aizawa cursed under his breath, “Come on, kid. Don’t be so stubborn for once in your life." He let Ryuuji continue chest compressions.

He stepped away from the paramedics, and Recovery Girl did the same, both walking towards Sero, who was kneeling a few meters away from Bakugou. Aizawa crouched beside him, resting a hand on his shoulder. He said nothing, there wasn’t anything he could possibly say to… Console him? Give his condolences? He didn’t know, and he wasn’t one to give false hope, but…

“He’s going to be fine, Sero”, he said.

Sero didn’t respond.

Ryuuji lifted her hands from Bakugou’s sternum once more, turning towards the AED, and immediately pressed the ‘analyze’ button.

“Evaluating heart rhythm… Shock advised.”

Yakumo, who was pumping air into Bakugou’s lungs, shared a subtle glance with Ryuuji. Aizawa noticed this, and he felt his heart sink.  Seven minutes had passed since Bakugou stopped breathing. And that was too fucking long, so there was the possibility of serious, irremediable brain damage- if not brain death,- from this point.

Ryuuji exhaled through her mouth inaudibly, and let the machine do its job.

“Do not touch the patient… Delivering shock.”

Yakumo sat on his knees with the AMBU bag in his hands, expectantly. He glanced at his smartwatch, eight minutes.

“Shock delivered…

Recovery Girl clenched her hands tightly. She glanced at her watch, eight minutes.

Analyzing…

Aizawa swallowed the lump in his throat. He counted on his head, eight minutes.

…Rhythm restored.”

Sero immediately moved towards his friend, “Bakugou…!”

Just as the paramedics tried to stop Sero from intervening, a loud intake of breath resonated through the training grounds.

Bakugou’s face was stoic, yet he was breathing, raspy and with difficulty. But he was breathing.

There was cheering. Teary and snotty, but cheering nonetheless. Midoriya fell to his knees, sobbing loudly. Uraraka went down with him and hugged him, rubbing his back, spewing a few tears herself. Iida loudly congratulated the paramedics and everyone involved ‘for making such an incredible achievement, to save someone’s life is a very heroic action. Truly an example of bravery and skill.’

Sero was kneeling on the floor again, he had stopped trying to reach Bakugou a while ago. He just stared at him, at his chest, his moving chest, rising and falling. He’s alive.

He felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked behind him and saw Kirishima smiling tearily at him. He was soon wrapped in a tight hug. The arms embracing him were shaking, but firmly clapped his back.

“You saved him”, he heard.

“It wasn’t just me”, his voice cracked.

Kaminari suddenly appeared, hugging both boys, his chin on top of Sero’s head. “T-Thank you, man”.

Mina put her hand on Sero’s cheek, wiping a few tears, crying herself, “You’re a hero, Sero”.

It was then that Sero realized that he had started crying. He hid his face on Kirishima’s chest, sobbing.

“I-I was so scared”, he cried.

“We know, sweetie”

“He looked so…”

“He’s fine now, you brought him back”

There was crying and sobbing everywhere. And those who weren’t crying before, started catching up. They weren’t sad, no, those were happy tears. They were relieved, so, so relieved. Thank God…

Aizawa wiped sweat off his face. He could only look as another paramedic came out with a stretcher on their arms. Yakumo and the paramedic lifted Bakugou into the stretcher while Ryuuji checked him for injuries.

Recovery Girl stood beside him. “Good job, Aizawa.”

“Thank you, Recovery Girl. You too.”

“We’ll talk about this later, right?”

“I suppose we should.”
