Sky Valley Rider

Summary:

When Cpt. Sidney Crosby returns to the Naval Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, his exploits as the U.S. Navy's finest pilot haunt him. Years after the tragic loss of his wingman, he is the only pilot skillful enough to go head-to-head against a hostile daredevil.

The past isn't as dead as it seems, and that enemy plane flies with a flair Sid recognizes in his soul.

Sorry, I got Top Gun: Maverick brainworms. Here is the unholy child of this cursèd union.

Work Text:

Sidney Crosby arrives back at TOPGUN, the Naval Fighter Weapons School, as a team leader instead of a student. Five years earlier he'd been in the pilot seat as a fresh-faced, battle-eager lieutenant, call sign: The Kid. His prodigious talents in the cockpit grew both his reputation and his ego. When a new pilot—Evgeni Malkin—arrived at the behest of Admiral Hextall, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Sidney's reign as top dog of the program was threatened. After a near-disastrous training field dogfight, Sidney and Evgeni earned each other's respect... and Evgeni earned his call sign: Bully.

Sidney and Evgeni grew closer, and as they were sent out onto their first mission together, tragedy struck. A missile shot Evgeni down; he was pronounced K.I.A. Sidney grieved by flying harder, faster, better, and five years later he returns to TOPGUN as a captain. An enemy fighter has been wreaking havoc in the Pacific, and Sidney is the only one with the skills to go head-to-head with this pilot in a dogfight.

Sidney hasn't seen someone fly like that in five years, though, and once he gets up into the air, he realizes he could never shoot down the man in that plane.

Notes:

So Geno shoots down the handler that has manipulated him into serving for the enemy, he's reunited with Sidney, and they fall in deep love. Et voila!
