Work Text:
Kanade sat at her desk, something she found herself doing more often than not. She was hunched over it as she read, wrote, and cast, read, wrote, and cast. It was a repetitive sequence she'd been doing ever since her father was cursed. She worked and worked on spells, taking some from the spell books in her family's library and adjusting them.
The spell she was currently working on was being tested on an egg. Said egg was found by a friend of hers, Akiyama Mizuki, and was given to her as a gift because it ‘reminded them of her’. It was larger than any egg she'd seen, not that she is around them often, and it was a grey with a blue tint. She didn't see the resemblance, but took it anyway. Now she was using it as a test subject for a spell that was supposed to accelerate growth.
If her assumptions were correct, the egg should be hatching very soon.
One the faint blue glow had faded from the egg, indicating that the effects of the spell had taken place, Kanade leaned in closer to observe. There was a singular small crack, stretching from the top of the egg downwards and branching off in several directions. She could also hear unidentifiable noises from within.
Before she could cast the spell again or adjust it at all, there was a soft knock on her door. Kanade stood up, cringing at the sound of her bones cracking, and sauntered towards the door. She turned the handle and pulled it open, being met with a certain brunette.
Honami's soft smile widened at the sight of Kanade, stepping inside the room once Kanade moved to the side. “I've bought your meal Lady Yoisaki” Honami said, moving to place the tray of food she held on the desk, Kanade thanking her. Before she was able to do that however, she let out a shriek and the tray fell to the ground. Concerned, Kanade rushed to see what it was that caused the reaction.
What she saw was a small reptile, covered in scales of a familiar brown, wings sprouting from its back. It seemed the egg had hatched. “I don’t mean to pry, Lady Yoisaki, but…” Honami began, her gaze flicking between the creature and Kanade. “Do you have a dragon in your bedroom?” she finished, her eyes meeting the other.
Kanade hesitantly stepped closer to the creature, kneeling to be on eye level with it. The dragon opened its eyes, Kanade thought they looked like one of those pools of magic that surrounded the kingdom, and stared at the princess. They stared at one another, unblinking, before Honami placed her hand on Kanades shoulder. “You shouldn't get so close to it. What if it hurts you?” She asked, concern obvious in her voice.
“It's fine Ms Mochizuki. It seems harmless” Kanade answered, lifting her hand to pat the dragon on its snout. The small dragon nuzzled into Kanades palm, and the sight made Honami smile.
“I see” Honami spoke as she began to pick up the dropped tray and ruined meal. “I’ll go make you something else. Would you like for me to bring something for our new friend?” she asked, gesturing to the dragon with her head.
Kanade gently picked the dragon up, cradling it in her hands, “That would be nice Ms Mochizuki. Thank you”. She had a soft smile on her face as she spoke, and it remained there as Honami nodded politely and left the room. Kanade looked down at the dragon as she sat back in her chair.
Now that she looked at it closer, it reminded her a bit of Honami.
