Ry's Markiplier Ego Headcanons

Summary:

A collection of headcanons and such of mine specifically for the Markiplier Egos! I'll update if I come up with new headcanons for certain characters, or when I create new chapters for other egos. I also didn't tag a lot of the more obscure/minor egos I mention and wrote stuff for in this. Enjoy!

Notes:

Just a little tidbit, but some of my headcanons are inspired by Doctor_Discord's "The Ego Manor" series. Though they don't write stories for the egos very much anymore, I still recommend checking them out, as they are one of my personal favorite writers, and they are just a wonderful human being. Cool!

Anyways, let's see what's up with Dark, shall we?

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Darkiplier

Chapter Text

Darkiplier: Characterization

  • Full Name: So, when Dark decided to call himself ‘Darkiplier,’ he didn’t actually take a first/last name into consideration, so he just let’s people assume his full name is ‘Dark Iplier,’ as strange as that might be for most people when meeting him for the first time.
  • Age: Technically 152 years old, considering the date listed below for his birthday, (as well as Celine and Damien’s ages when they died), but he looks around 31 or 32.
  • Height: 5’11
  • Birthday: I mean, the man has like fifty thousand birthdays that are debated over by the fandom, but I like to consider the day that he actually, truly became Darkiplier his real birthday. This date takes place at the tail end of the Who Killed Markiplier: October 13, 1928. He has been on the channel for 10 years.
  • Pronouns: Primarily he/him; however, he is genderfluid, so he also has the occasional feminine day—on which she prefers to go by she/her—and thus shifts her physical form to convey so.
  • Sexuality: Sexuality is not something that Dark often thinks about, and he usually doesn’t care romantically for anyone except his husband, so he really isn’t one to introduce himself with any specific label. Despite this, he wouldn’t mind or particularly care if people were to call him polysexual and demiromantic, as their descriptions are the closest to conveying how he feels.
  • Favorite Color: Ironically, he’s very fond of the color white. He likes how bright and pure it is in concept compared to the other colors that he’s capable of seeing.
  • Favorite Food: Dark is a general fan of pasta, and he likes to cook authentic Paccheri al Forno recipes when he has the time, because they’re usually easy enough to make at home and are 10/10 squisito. Honestly, he just loves Italian food.
  • Favorite Dessert/Sweet Item: Raspberry cheesecake paired with a glass of sparkling lemonade on a hot day is literally like untouched heaven for Dark. He also, funnily enough, loves a bit of dark chocolate as a little treat.
  • Favorite Drink(s): In no particular order, Dark’s favorite drinks are champagne, red wine, and black coffee.
  • Favorite Fruit: His husband Plums and black cherries.
  • Signature Scent: Cedar wood, spearmint, and the light fragrance of ozone, petrichor, and something…cold. Overlaid with a light spritz of an expensive cologne for special occasions and such.
  • Favorite Song: Probably either “I’ll Be Around” by Don Cherry or “Maybe” by The Ink Spots, because they both make him feel calm and remind him of Wilford. Dark still enjoys music from the 20s-50s, and has a little cart of old records in his bedroom that he’ll put on while he’s relaxing.
  • Favorite Movie/TV Show: He enjoys both the original 1964 black-and-white version of The Addams Family, as well as the movie from 1991.
  • Favorite Musical: The Phantom of the Opera, Chess, and Jekyll & Hyde name a few of his favorites.
  • Favorite Book: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, for… reasons.
  • Aura: A monochrome film that often bleeds into the space around him, leaching all color from what it touches, (though the color will slowly return within a minute or two once the aura withdraws from the object or area). Dark glows with an outline of red and blue that glitches and tends to split into two separate figures of respective color when he becomes immensely stressed or furious. His voice echoes unnaturally no matter how full a room might be, and a subtle ringing noise follows him at all times–a noise that will rise or fall in pitch and volume depending on his mood/emotions, or simply if he wishes for it to do so in order to bring discomfort to others. Dark holds the ability to pull the monochrome further into his body to the point where he almost appears like a regular human, with only the faintest glow of his red and blue aura pulsing around him, (something that otherwise could be passed off as a trick of the light for anyone who isn’t in the know about him), however he doesn’t often care much to do so. Additional abilities include the ability to manipulate the void for things such as teleportation and storage, manifesting figures out of black smoke, manifesting inky black tendrils similar to tentacle appendages from his aura, instilling deep psychological terror in whomever he wishes to, skilled emotional manipulation, and mental communication through his aura.

Darkiplier: General Headcanons

  • Dark is one of the few egos that the others see as a parental figure; however, the ones of whom he is literally the father are Yandereplier and Glitchiplier. (Bim honestly might as well be–and Dark and Wilford consider him so–but he is around CC!Mark’s age and was created as an official ego, so only in technicality, he is not.)

  • Dark has the ability to shapeshift and change his physical form at will, which is a power he doesn't often use, other than to make himself more comfortable on feminine days. Using this power often takes little to no effort from him. Naturally, he can also bend his form into the most unthinkable inhuman horrors that are far beyond a person’s worst nightmares. (Something that will occasionally happen accidentally, which is not fun for anyone involved.)

  • He is a very gifted singer and piano player, (he gets the piano skills from Damien), though he doesn’t play often. When he does, it's usually as the odd practice session whenever he needs to bring his stress level down. He has also played for Wilford on occasions, as well as Yandere in order to get her hyperactive ass to actually go to sleep when she was much younger.

  • Dark can also speak fluent French! (Another talent attributed to Damien.)

  • He finds a strange sense of comfort in the Host’s library, and due to this, his informal visits to the basement outnumber the ones regarding visions and other such information. (Honestly, he also just wants to check up on the Host from time to time, considering that the blind ego spends literally almost all of his free time alone.)

  • Dark also enjoys spending time in CJ’s garden in the back of the manor–something that he, RJ, Eric, and the Host all share in common–and will often sit out and enjoy the sun when he isn’t drowning in legal arrangements, bills, or any other general paperwork forced upon his already suffocating workload.

  • Dark is almost fully colorblind due to his aura perpetually draining the color from around him. He can only see black, gray, white, blues, and reds. Whenever he pulls his aura into his body to appear human, he regains his ability to see color for the most part, but it takes a while for his eyes to adjust.

  • He despises the cold. Dark can stand a breeze, of course, it’s just that he hates when it’s freezing or storming outside because it makes his dead, broken body even more unbearable to control than usual. On top of this, he has a mild fear of thunder due to the events of Who Killed Markiplier, and he does his absolute damnedest to hide it from the other egos in order to shelter his pride. (And perhaps just a bit because he cares enough about them that doesn't want them to be worrying about him, but he couldn’t admit that either, due to said pride.)

  • Speaking of pride, yeah, Dark is a horrible creature of pride and habit. He likes his day to have a set structure—but he, unlike Bim, can adjust to interruptions far easier if absolutely required, however he won’t be so happy about it. He usually does much of the same things each day, and none of them particularly have anything to do with self care, unfortunately. Dark is usually very stubborn, and it takes endless pestering for him to finally crack on something that he’s declared final.

  • Dark cares deeply for the egos, and feels a strange connection with each and every one of them. He has much trouble expressing this, as he is ever the stoic leader who is unwilling to show his feelings, but over the years his rough shell has begun to crack towards the people he loves. If anyone were to ask the others, some of their favorite moments with Dark have been when he was relaxed and genuinely comfortable with them, and not just as their boss, but as a part of their family.

  • To add to the earlier idea of a broken body: It is literal hell to have to force a physically dead body to work again. Due to magic, willpower, and black coffee being the only damn things keeping this old sack of revenge “alive,” Dark suffers from chronic pain that will spike unpredictably on random days. Understandably, on such days Dark can’t really muster up the energy or care to do much of anything on these days, so he usually just stays cooped up in his room. (Not that he usually does anything different, it’s just that he isn’t working himself back into the grave as per usual, and he is in a significantly greater amount of pain.)

  • Speaking of this, Dark still keeps Damien’s cane in his room, and it leans discreetly against the bed frame for when his pain spikes or whenever he is feeling nostalgic and decides to carry it around with him for a little while.

  • Spiders are oddly attracted to him, which Google hates for reasons that will become clear a bit later in the android’s own headcanons. Either way, Dark is just as enamored with the little critters as they are with him, and he will often summon little wisping strands of his aura for them to chase and crawl around on if the curious little things hover around his work long enough for him to notice. He dreams of getting a tarantula one day, but for some reason, his husband is extremely hesitant to allow one to reside in their shared bedroom. Couldn’t begin to imagine why. (*Heavy Sarcasm*)

  • Dark is an amazing cook, which is a trait that was shared between both Celine and Damien when they were alive. This man could probably cook anything—like honestly, him and Bim as a team when catering for the egos’ social gatherings is the dream for everyone involved. Of course, holiday food pops off every year without fail, as well.

  • While Dark is technically a separate entity from Celine or Damien, they still live in his head, and he has their memories and emotions, and opinions. He, of course, doesn’t speak for them and their characteristics do not speak for him. Under specific circumstances, when his form splits as mentioned in the Aura section, the twins will flicker into the figures instead of copies of Dark, in a way similar to the end of Who Killed Markiplier. The three of them exist together, bound by revenge, regret, pain, and something darker. The twins can talk to Dark, if they wish to. After all, they may never rest so long as they are a part of the entity Darkiplier, so what reason would they have not to?

  • Dark’s aura will appear predominantly blue or red depending on which twin is beginning to take control. For example, if Celine wants to influence his decisions and speak to him, Dark’s aura will flare red, and his eyes will flicker in the same shade while she is doing so. Because of this, he will often close his eyes when one of the twins begins speaking to him, so that the other egos don’t question it. Celine and Damien cannot fully control Dark in any way; however, if one of them really wants to do something, Dark will often do it without thinking. (One rare instance when Yancy’s hair was absent of gel, Dark happened to walk past him and Damien had a sudden impulse to run a hand through the man’s fluffy hair, which Dark then simply did without any second thought. Yancy smiled, confused, while Dark just blushed in mild embarrassment and apologized, claiming he had no idea why he did that before abruptly turning the other way and going back to his office. Damien was happy, though.)

  • He and Reynolds have an strange understanding of each other, for literally no reason in particular. The two will just be sitting in the same room in complete silence, and will simply get it, despite them both being the furthest from any sort of similarity.

  • Dark has a complicated friendship with Mark (Resident Enis), both because of his name, and because of the fact that Mark once knew Damien due to him slipping through time while trying to find the egos. He’s a bit awkward around the survivalist, and prefers to call him ‘Res’ or 'Resident’, because even thinking about his real name leaves a foul taste in his mouth—for obvious reasons. Res doesn’t particularly mind this, since the nickname easily grew popular with the other egos after he stopped going by Enis’ name, and does indeed make it easier to talk about him without setting off Dark or making others think they are talking about the actual content creator Mark(iplier). Either way, Damien tends to drift to the front of Dark’s mind when the two spend time together, but the former mayor tries not to add any input, because he knows that it would only make it harder for Res to move on; however, when he can’t help but say something, Dark tries to word it in a way that makes it seem ambiguously like Damien, since Res is thoroughly unsure if Dark himself is Damien or not and feels as though it’s not his place to ask. Res still calls him by the former mayor’s name sometimes purely by accident—before scrambling to correct himself—and every time this happens, it manages to catch Dark off guard just the same as it did the first time, but he can’t ever bring himself to feel angry about it.
