Marvelous Traditions

Summary:

Various one shots related to the seasons and holidays and the mystic magical mumbo-jumbo that likes to crop up around those times and how Captain Marvel has to deal with them as the Champion of Magic. The League, unfortunately, often gets caught in the crossfire when they stick their noses where they don't belong.

First chapter will be an index, I plan on posting chapters as holidays occur, so don't expect regular updates. Also, please leave holiday suggestions and dates! I want to include as many traditions as possible throughout so don't be shy about leaving a comment!

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Chapter 1: Chapter Index

Chapter Text

Chapter Index:

The obligatory holiday specials have arrived! This fic will be updated roughly in accordance to the actual holidays they’re referencing, so don’t expect regular updates. There will be long hiatuses between each installment.

I can’t hit everyone’s holidays, but leave a suggestion and a correlating date and I’ll see if I can get a one shot of it out! In particular, since there are so many winter holidays, I may drag that month out by a few years, focusing on a different holiday each year (the current plan is Christmas, then Hanukkah, then Yuletide), so don't feel like you've missed your chance if I've already posted something similar.

Chapter 1:Chapter Index (you are here).

Chapter order and theme subject to change as suggestions are left.

Chapter 2: All Hallows Eve

Halloween theme--Hal and Barry decide to spy on Captain Marvel to see why he's almost never around during the Fall season. They quickly come to regret that decision.

Chapter 3: Giving Thanks for What Little I’ve Got

(November 24th) Thanksgiving theme--Superman shows up to the Watchtower to give Marvel some leftovers, since he knows he always takes the worst shifts on this holiday. They talk a little bit about Family, and Marvel drops some alarming little tidbits about his life.

Chapter 4: Lights in the Windows

(December 8th) Festival of Lights (Lyonnes)--J’onn finds Captain Marvel doing magic in the Watchtower. Or, Marvel invokes a newer magic rite and fills the Watchtower with little lights. Zatanna shows up later and flips out.

Chapter 5: As Close to a Christmas Tradition as I Get

(December 24/25th) Christmas theme--Superman is always teased about his love of Christmas (and his whole-hearted belief in the existence of Santa Clause), but this year Captain Marvel invites him up to the Rock of Eternity to participate in a little Christmas tradition of his own.

Chapter 6: For the Last Time, I Don’t Drink! (But I Will Give You some Booze if You Leave Me Alone)

(January 1st) New years theme--Green Lantern Guy Gardner and Booster Gold make the mistake of heckling Captain Marvel for his prudish lifestyle. They come to regret it come morning.

Chapter 7: New Additions to Old Family Traditions

(January 6th) Dia de Reyes theme--Captain Marvel commandeers the Watchtower kitchen for Shazamily shenanigans.

Chapter 8: Tiger, Meet Rabbit

(January 22nd) Chinese New Years theme--Mr. Tawney being grouchy it’s no longer the year of the Tiger. To be perfectly fair to him though, Hoppy is low-key gloating. Marcus (aka the Monkey Prince) just want's to know why they're in his house.

Chapter 9: Rodents of Unusual Size have Magic Shadows. Or, Pudgy Controls the Weather.

(February 2nd) Groundhog day--Lois Lane wasn’t actually here for a puff piece about a town’s traditions. What she was here for was to hopefully score an interview with their infamously hard to catch local hero Captain Marvel. Of course, the longer she stays here, the weirder the town seems.

Chapter 10: Love is in the Air…Oh No, Wait, Those are Arrows

(February 14th) Valentine's theme--Cupid’s come to town, and he’s armed. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are in for the fight of their love-lives.

Chapter 11: Hide and Go Seek the Pies

(March 14th) Pi Day--Fawcett is a weird, weird place where weird, weird things happen. Or, all the children ditch school to go scavenger hunting for magical pies.

Chapter 12: Beware the Bored Gods

(March 15th) Ides of March--The Roman gods throw a toga party. Or maybe a tantrum. There’s not much difference when you’re divine.

Chapter 13: Luck, Leprechauns, and Little Green Men

(March 17th) St. Patricks Day. Everyone is after the Leprechauns, and Marvel has roped Hal, John and Gardner  into helping him corral people because one of the Oa retired to earth ages ago and he’s not dealing with the little people and the false leprechauns at the same time.

Chapter 14: Spring Has Sprung and Death’s Come Knocking

(March 20th) Spring Equinox--The time has come again for the dread, ice-hearted Queen of Hades to travel from the Land of the Dead to Olympus (because her mother refuses to do the work of spring anymore). This is, predictably, Billy’s problem.

Chapter 15: 18 fools

(April 1st) April Fools Day theme--It’s Billy’s birthday, this can only mean one thing; chaos.

Chapter (16): He Who Receives Many Guests Has Come to Collect

(September 23rd) Fall Equinox--Hades and Persephone reunite--this time sans a kidnapping.

Chapter (17): All the Little Souls Lost and Those We’ve Yet to Lose

(November 1st) Dia de Todos los Santos--Billy reflects on the fate of his long lost sister, the friends he’s lost on the streets, and his power to interfere with the afterlife.

Chapter (18): Graveyard Picnics for Those Left and Left to Remember

(November 2nd) Dia de Los Muertos--Billy and Mary have been separated for a long time. For the first time in as long as either of them can remember, they can meet and remember the family they were born into. So they have a midnight picnic and do some ghost watching.
