The pandemic was not something they were expecting in Hirano's last year of high school.
After all of their hard work to get Kagiura one of the best grades in his class, even achieving to be in the top 20 between all the first years, finally being able of living together for another whole year... after a month, the pandemic hits, and the dorms are shut for a while since their school decides is better to do online classes for the time being.
They were devastated, Kagiura lived two hours away from the city so the idea of traveling to see him seemed troublesome but he was willing to do it. But Hirano insisted he shouldn't, since his dad was an old man, and of course he is going to be worried about Hirano's dad too and follow his request of just messaging and calls.
During the first month of the pandemic, they weren't too clingy. Kagiura did not want to annoy Hirano on a daily basis, and Hirano insisted that, although he really wanted to know how Kagi was doing, it would be weird to text his best friend on a daily basis. But Hirano's mother got quite tired of his son staring at the phone hoping his ex-roommate would text first. Thankfully, she had Kagiura's number, so when his son was missing his friend she would send him a message with just "he is waiting for you, again", and Kagiura would send Hirano a message instantly, then reply to Hirano's mom with a silly kaomoji and a thank you.
"What an adorable kid"
By the second month, they were texting daily and calling nearly every day, they knew each other's schedules by memory at that point. Hirano sometimes had to block Kagiura so he would focus on his lessons instead of texting Hirano. They could talk about everything and anything, and when they realized that they have been texting for a long time, instead of just finishing the conversation, they would call so the conversation could go faster, but it never finished any sooner than just texting. Behind a screen Kagiura even was flirty, taking Hirano by surprise multiple times, he would randomly compliment him or say a silly pickup line.
Because of this, Kagiura's family called Hirano 'his boyfriend'. Hirano could sometimes hear in the background some "are you talking to your boyfriend again?" Or "Please, stop flirting so loudly with your boyfriend". That one annoyed Kagi a lot, sometimes he stopped, but when that didn't work Kagiura would started being even more cheesy to annoy his sibling, until they would shout at Hirano to please shut him up.
"awww you sound so tired Hirano-san is quite cute" UGH! Kagiura had no shame in admitting how charming Hirano is in his eyes, Hirano felt nice being complimented but it was embarrassing, and also, of course he was tired, that day he had to wake up early and his classes were canceled, because his teacher was sick, he got to sleep more but he overslept.
"OMG AKIRA CAN YOU STOP REMINDING ME I'M SINGLE" Hirano could hear Kagi-kun's older sister in the background, and knowing that Kagiura hated when they did that he, of course, is gonna to start annoy her in purpose...
"Hirano-san~ I love you so much you are so charming and kind, and nice..." HE HATED WHEN KAGIURA DID THIS!!, He could feel his cheeks getting warmer and his mother giving him a knowing smirk, she knew what Kagi was doing. Kagiura knew that Hirano was not good at taking compliments but did it anyway, he could hear him stuttering and getting angry after showering him in sweet words. It was so cute, he planned on keep going but his sister shouted in the background again.
"HIRANO-CHAN CAN YOU PLEASE TELL YOUR GUY TO SHUT UP" Hirano wanted to die. Kagiura on the other hand was living his best life.
"Yeah Hirano-san tell me, your guy, to shut up~ ❤️ " said smugly, Hirano could hear his smile... This guy...
"Kagi-kun please shut up, my mother is hearing all of this..."
"HI AKIRA-KUN~" shouted Hirano's mother in the background, as if they were best friends, Hirano wonders how they got so close
"Hirano-san please move your phone away from your ear so I can say hi back to your mom" he did so, he appreciated the warning "HI MISS HIRANO!! HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GOOD DAY" but he hated everything else of this situation.
The 'I miss you's were common in their conversations but by the third month, they were becoming heavier and heavier. The calls became a daily thing, and it wasn't enough anymore.
Hirano was even missing those stupid daily 10 seconds they had going on last year, his mother insisted him on going to visit Kagiura, but he wouldn't risk his father's health just to see Kagi... no matter how tempting sounded seeing him.
For Kagiura, although he wasn't the type to save his thoughts to himself, each time they were on a call with Hirano, the amounts of times he would think about how much he misses him was so embarrassing he couldn't say it, he feared once he said it he wouldn't stop. His family knew about Hirano's situation, of him being so worried about his dad, so they weren't insisting Kagi on the idea of going to visit him, except for his little sisters that couldn't really grasp the situation.
But one day one of Kagiura's little sisters and Hirano's father had the same idea.
"Just get a place together"
Hirano was surprised his father recommended that, but it would be a lie to say he hasn't thought about that option.
"You... don't mind me leaving to go live with Kagiura?"
"I don't like the idea of you staying in his house, It would be rude, so I was thinking you could rent a place with him if his parents are okay with that. We can help you both out"
"Wouldn't it be easier for him to stay here"
"I don't want to see my son constantly flirting with his boyfriend"
"HE IS NOT MY BOYFRIEND!!, Why does everyone think that?! where did you get that idea?!"
"You two are constantly on call, he flirts with you a lot, and sometimes you flirt back--"
"I HAVE NEVER--"
"I've heard you say 'you are not too bad yourself' when you were calling in your room"
"WE WERE PLAYING A VIDEOGAME"
"Anyway, your relationship doesn't look very... platonic. Right Honey?"
Hirano's mother jumped at the sudden inclusion in the conversation... eyes were on her, her husband's, handsome and cold as ever, and her son's, filled with curiosity and clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
"I know you don't like the topic of romance... but Akira-kun clearly has a crush on you" She started. So even his mother realized Kagiura's feelings for Hirano?, that guy really had to stop being so obvious "You guys don't video-call because your phone is so old... but if you did I'm pretty sure that guy would have heart eyes, I mean, I've met him before and he does!"
Hirano wanted the ground to swallow him whole... this conversation was so embarrassing AND POINTLESS, THEY DIDN'T NEED TO REMIND HIM THAT HIS BEST FRIEND HAD A CRUSH ON HIM.
he decided that it would be for the better to stop this topic and go back a little "OKAY I GET IT, ANYWAY. If you guys don't have any problem with us living together... I would appreciate it if you could help us. I know it will cost a lot of money. I can help by tutoring some classmates, I've been told I'm good at that, and Kagi--" His mother stopped him putting a hand on his shoulder and giving him a gentle smile, he was talking like needed to convince them when there was no need to, he realized.
"We will cross that bridge when we get to it, for now, ask that Kagiura guy for his parent's number so we can arrange everything" his father added.
Hirano took his phone out, ready to call Kagiura, when he saw that there were some unread messages from their chat.
"Hirano-san, live with me!"
Kagiura was lucky that he had such a big family. One of his cousins and his best friend had to leave their apartment to be with their family, but they still needed to pay rent since they already had a life there with home appliances bought by their hard work and everything. So when Kagiura's mother sent a message to the big family group chat asking if they knew any cheap apartments, that cousin jump straight in begging to go to his to keep everything in order and safe.
Of course, they still needed to pay rent, but since it was also a favor and he was close with his cousin, he and his best friend were also going to help with the rent. So rent alone was going to be extremely cheap for Hirano and Kagiura's parents.
They were also going to work to help pay rent and food, Hirano already had some classmates that were willing to pay for his tutoring, and Kagiura has been teaching guitar to kids for a while to his surprise, both the fact that he knew how to teach kids, and that he knew how to play the guitar. When Kagiura told him about that, he asked for proof but he refused. Thankfully, Kagi's mother send him an old video of Kagi playing a song that sounded familiar but couldn't quite figure out which one was.
Young Kagiura playing the guitar was quite cute he admitted to Kagi after telling him about his mother sending him the video, he could hear him dying of happiness and embarrassment over the compliment.
The song ended up being "If I can't have you" by Shawn Mendes, and he promised Hirano to play it for him when they meet in the apartment.
If they weren't holding their things, they would have jumped into each other's arms the moment they met in front of the apartment building.
Hirano was surprised by how little conversation Kagiura was making. Well, is not like he was not answering or talking back, but he was talking extremely fast, like he wanted to get it over with as fast as possible. Another thing that was surprising, is how fast the guy could walk holding 3 boxes with a guitar and a back pack on his back, one of the boxes being Hirano's, since he could barely match up with Kagi with 2 boxes and Kagiura's bass.
Kagiura was still in a hurry when they stepped into the apartment, but now he looked more like an excited puppy, looking at the really cozy apartment in front of them.
"Hirano-san! my cousin's friend's bedroom has a big bed, he said that he usually slept accompanied so he got himself a big bed, you can take that room if you want" Hirano was surprised by how unfazed was Kagiura at what he just said, either he really didn't care or he wasn't aware of what he was saying "I don't know why exactly you need a bigger bed for sleepovers but hey! he slept comfy"
He is an idiot. Either way, after knowing that, Hirano does NOT want that bedroom.
"Nah, you can take it, you are bigger than I so it would be better for you to have it." he wasn't really lying, also Hirano liked sleeping in small places, it felt more comfortable.
Kagiura nodded eagerly and ran to the dormitories, first leaving Hirano's box in his room and then to his own. Hirano did the same, first leaving Kagi's bass by his bed and then going to his own room.
When Hirano closed the door of his assigned room behind him, finally empty-handed, he understood why Kagi was in such a hurry before. One step into the corridor and he had two arms wrapped around his neck, holding him close. It didn't even take a second for Hirano to return the hug.
" I missed you" Kagiura hugged him as if his life depended on it, his voice trembling with relief, out of happiness, and finally being able to get those 3 words out of his chest. But his initial fears of those words were real though, saying it once wasn't enough "I missed you so... so much"
It hurt to hear Kagi's voice trembling, hearing him having to inhale deeply before every "I missed you so much" fearing that he would break. Hirano knows that Kagiura is a sensitive person, and he is proud the taller one wasn't crying yet, even Hirano's eyes were about to overflow.
"I missed you too Kagi-kun... so so much" he replied once, saying it once was enough for him, but not for Kagiura.
"You... Hirano-san you have no idea how badly I missed you each day" Hirano hugged him tighter "I wanted to see your face, to hold you, to touch you so bad... I..." and tighter, entangling his hand into Kagi's hair to comfort him like he always did.
Even though they were living such a heavy moment, Hirano couldn't help but smile, finally being able to hold a person who was so dear to him again.
After some seconds of silence, Kagi let go a little to see Hirano's face, he was aware that he himself was crying by now, but it was a surprise to see Hirano crying as well. He moved his hands to dry those tears, and for Hirano's look on his face, he guessed he didn't realize he was crying too.
"Woah... So I missed this kid THIS much huh?" Is well known that Hirano was never the expressive type, if it wasn't Kagiura the one in front of him he would have hidden his face, maybe run away from the situation. But right now the least he wanted to do is leave Kagi's side.
"I don't know how to feel about you crying, but I know I'm tired and I don't want to let you go... so, with your permission, we are going to the sofa"
"we?" Answered Hirano with a smile on his face. That didn't last much since Kagiura wrapped his arms around Hirano's waist and lifted him up. "HUH?! KAGI-KUN?!"
Kagiura was walking to the sofa holding Hirano, the guy didn't even look like he was struggling "Don't try to resist, my desire for cuddles is stronger than any excuse you have to not cuddle me" He said, already throwing himself on the couch with Hirano trying to free himself from his tight embrace.
"WELL UHH, we've been hugging for more than ten seconds!" Suddenly Hirano was conscious of how close they were, he didn't mind perse, but he felt like he was doing something he really shouldn't.
"I didn't touch you for 3 MONTHS I'm using all the seconds I didn't use today" Replied, holding Hirano tighter.
"Well... 6 days would be a minute and a month has about 30 days so that--"
"--I'm allowed 15 minutes of touching you. Jokes on you Hirano-san, I already did the math before coming here and I'm using ALL OF MY MINUTES NOW!" Hirano couldn't really fight him right now could he? He was surprised Kagi had this prepared. After realizing his loss, he wrapped his arms around Kagi's neck "Aww, you look so pretty in my arms"
Hirano wanted to die. Now that Kagiura had already said everything he always wanted to say via phone, it was easy to say it again... this is going to be an enjoyable time together.
Hirano woke up in the middle of the night thanks to Kagiura's phone non-stop ringing.
They fell asleep on the couch.
Hirano fell asleep on top of Kagi.
Hirano had no time to process the situation, he wanted the ringing to stop, so he sat, trying to move as gently as possible so he wouldn't wake Kagiura up, and grabbed the ringing phone from inside the hoddie's pocket, It was Kagiura's big brother calling.
Since they arrived in the apartment they didn't contact their families, "they must be worried" he thought so he picked up the call.
"So you finally answer, you little bastard"
Well, that was a great first impression "Uh... Hirano Taiga is speaking, Kagi-kun is asleep right now"
"OH YEAH, you are my little bro's boyfriend, Nice to meet you call me brother-in-law"
This guy sucked at second impressions too huh "Yeah uh no. I am not dating Kagiura. Anyway, is late and I want to sleep so... anything you need?"
"Oof, feisty I see how my brother likes it" He wants to kill this man "Nah, we wanted to know how the moving situation was going, but I guess there's nothing to worry?"
"yeah, nothing at all. Good night" and he hung up.
Hirano was way too sleepy to think about rude that was, and now he had to wonder how to go to his own bed without waking up the annoying gentle giant he was on top of.
He lowered his gaze to meet a barely awake Kagiura. When he thought that he could finally leave the sofa without any worry now that his companion was awake, he felt a pair of big hands holding his hips, keeping him where he was, sitting on Kagiura's lap.
Hirano froze for a second, feeling hyper-aware of their current position. "This feels way too fucking dangerous, I gotta leave"
"You look pretty from down here" Hirano couldn't help blushing over the comment, the position, Kagiura half asleep soft voice whispering sweet nothing in the middle of the dark, this felt too intimate, what the actual fuck was going on?
"Your pretty comments won't convince me to have a good night's sleep on a bed" he replied quickly, sassy, maybe that would cut the intimate aura of the situation.
But it didn't. With a simple squeeze on his hips, a sweet half-asleep smile, and a soft "Stay", Hirano's head was once again on Kagiura's chest.
Kagi will remember this tomorrow, so he had to give an excuse before he gets his hopes up "I'm only doing this because you asked. Got it?" Kagi nodded and hold Hirano by the waist pulling him closer. Suddenly, he was resting on the crook of Kagiura's neck, and his hand resting on top of where his heart is, feeling the calm beat under his palm.
It didn't take a long time until they fell asleep again.
The next morning everything felt cozy.
Kagi woke up first with a charming Hirano breathing on his neck, it made him shiver and he was internally fangirling like the girls that have crushes on him every time he greets back. He felt on cloud nine, and it was the weekend so he could just go back to sleep... but he was hungry, and he remembers clearly yesterday in the middle of the night convincing Hirano to stay. Sleeping on top of someone couldn't be so comfortable sadly, since it was very comfortable for Kagi, it felt like having a weighted blanket.
Kagi moved Hirano to his side as gently as possible, successfully not waking him up. And went to the kitchen.
His cousin gave him a very simple explanation of where everything was in the apartment, finding the mugs and pans was easy, there were some eggs in the fridge, and there was bread too. His mom gave him the basics on what to buy and how to look for the best prices. So now it was time to make some coffee, toast, and scrambled eggs.
Now that they were living together again he decided he has to show off his "husbando material traits" as his sister said when he asked for advice on how to whoo a guy like Hirano.

"Make breakfast for him, not a really heavy thing. Just because you eat a stupid amount of food means he does too" He ate in the cafeteria next to him for a whole year, of course he knew that.

"Little bro, you have a killing bod, show off. Is your house, if you walk shirtless here, you can walk shirtless there" I mean, Kagi knew he was somewhat attractive... he can try, but he has to admit that was a very bold move.

"You are going to be in close proximity and privacy for as long as you guys are doing this, show off how you would be as a husband, take advantage of the inherited intimacy of living with someone" He can do that!

"And flirt, of course. Now go and make me proud my little gay brother!" He loved his big sis.
He can do this!
"Hey Kagi... watchu cookin'?" said the half-asleep Hirano resting his head on Kagiura's shoulder.
He can't do this, he is going to die of happiness by next week.
He can't wait to see Hirano on a daily basis again, He missed him so much.
