Work Text:
At the end of the day, Kaito didn’t even really want to come to this party. But alas, here he is. He sighs.
It’s Himiko’s birthday party, and as much as he loves her, he’d much rather be at home cuddling with his boyfriend. Where is he, anyway..?
“Kaito?” He hears Shuichi say, snapping a finger in his face. “You still with us?”
He startles out of his thoughts, then laughs. “Yeah, sorry.” He says. “I’ve only had, like, two sips. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Maybe not about you, but have you seen Kokichi?” Maki asks, stifling a smile. She takes a sip of her own beer, resting her head on Kaede’s shoulder.
Kaito turns around on his seat on the couch, scanning the room for Kokichi. He doesn’t manage to find him.
“No, I haven’t.” He shakes his head. “But he doesn’t drink much. He’s a bit of a lightweight.”
Shuichi looks at him skeptically. “A lightweight? You sure?”
Kaito chuckles. “I’m pretty sure I’d know whether my boyfriend can hold his alcohol or not.”
“Right, but..” Shuichi trails off, and before he knows it, Kaito’s startled by arms wrapping around his neck from behind.
“Kai-chaaaan,” he hears Kokichi whine, burying his face in the back of his neck.
He jolts up, earning another quiet whine from the boy behind him. His face heats up, realizing that all of his friends are about to watch this play out.
He turns around, much to Kokichi’s dismay. He’s weakly leaning against the back of the couch, halfheartedly using Kaito as a support beam.
“H-Hey, you okay?” Kaito asks, taking Kokichi’s face in his hands. He tilts his head from side to side, searching for any sort of bruise or mark. When he finds nothing, he frowns. What’s the matter with him, then?
Kokichi hiccups. “‘M sleepy,” he grumbles. “Can I..”
Without finishing his sentence, he clumsily climbs over the back of the couch and settles himself in Kaito’s lap. He’s practically already asleep by the time Kaito realizes what’s going on.
“W-Wait, ‘Kichi, what—“
“He’s drunk, Kaito.” Maki interjects, laughing to herself slightly.
Ah, shit.
Everyone around the coffee table has their eyes on him and Kokichi. Kaede’s got a big, dumb smile on her face, squealing at how ‘cute’ he and Kokichi are. Maki’s still chuckling to herself, and Shuichi is trying not to do the same. Kaito sighs.
“Shit, I should take him home.” Kaito says, pausing to lift Kokichi into his arms in a bridal carry as he stands. It’s far too easy for him to do so, and everyone seems to notice.
“I know you said he was a lightweight, but I didn’t think you meant that literally.” Kaede says as she raises an eyebrow. “Or are you just that used to carrying him around?” She teases.
Kaito’s face turns an even darker shade of red, if that’s even possible. He shakes his head in attempt to hide it.
Kokichi whines in his sleep at the sudden movement. It’s cute, Kaito thinks, and his heart skips a beat. He’s about to stare at his boyfriend lovingly for a bit until he realizes he’s still got an audience.
“You okay to drive him home? I haven’t had anything,” Shuichi offers, getting up from his seat and standing awkwardly. “I can drive you guys back, if you’d like.”
“Nah, that’s okay. Thanks, though, bro.” Kaito releases one hand from his hold on Kokichi to clap Shuichi on the back, effectively startling everyone in the room, as they think he’s about to drop his boyfriend.
Kaito pauses, then laughs. “Guys, he’s okay. He’s, like, not even a hundred pounds.”
Everyone shares a sigh of relief, while Kokichi grumbles in his sleep at the mention of him. Kaito breathes out a sigh of laughter.
Kaito says his goodbyes, gathering his things with one hand (Startling Maki again, as she’s a bit too tipsy to remember what happened a moment ago), and heading out the door.
“Hey, Spaceman!” He hears Miu yell from inside, obviously drunk. “Fuck him good!”
Kaito groans. “He’s drunk, Miu.” He yells back.
Miu’s eyes widen. “Oh! Then don’t fuck him! I’ll kill you if you do!”
Kaito rolls his eyes and opens the passenger door. He gently places Kokichi in the seat and secures the seatbelt around him.
This seems to stir him, as when Kaito enters the car from the other side, Kokichi is awake.
“Mmph.. Kai-chan..?” Kokichi practically whispers, rubbing his eyes hazily.
“Hey,” Kaito greets him, softly and quietly. “You ready to go home?”
Kokichi leans his head against Kaito’s shoulder in response. He’s half asleep again. As cute as it is, Kokichi being a sleepy drunk can be a pain in the ass at times.
Kaito sighs, and pats his head. “Honey, I can’t drive with you on my shoulder.”
Kokichi lets out some sort of noise in disagreement, but he still complies with the unspoken request, leaning against the car door instead. Kaito starts the car and pulls out of the driveway.
Over the years, he’s found that he can get a real kick out of talking to Kokichi while he’s drunk. Usually, he’s totally out of it, hardly being able to comprehend the conversation at all. He feels a little guilty for taking advantage of his vulnerable state, but can’t a man laugh at his drunk boyfriend every once in a while?
“Hey, ‘Kichi,” Kaito starts, a mischievous smile on his face.
“Hmmm..” Kokichi hums, quietly. Whether subconsciously or not, Kaito doesn’t know. He grins.
“I love you,” He says, taking his eyes off the road for a moment to gaze at his boyfriend. Said boy looks completely dazed, but as pretty as ever in Kaito’s eyes.
“Hmph.” Kokichi grumbles. “..No.”
“No?” Kaito laughs, ruffling his hair with a free hand. “I don’t love you?”
“No,” Kokichi agrees, easily. “I love you.”
Kaito’s heart swells in the midst of his laughing. “You know, we can love each other at the same time.”
“Nuh-uh,” Kokichi pouts, leaning into Kaito’s touch as his head spins. “Can’t.”
Kaito shakes his head and scoffs humorously. “If you say so.”
“I say so,” Kokichi snaps, sounding proud of himself. “‘M tired.”
“I know, baby. We’re almost home.”
“Why’d we leave?” Kokichi mumbles. “Himiko..?”
“You’re wasted, ‘Kichi. I had to take you home before you passed out.” Kaito chuckles.
“Am not,” Kokichi insists. “‘M just sleepy.”
“Right.” Kaito says, a fond smile settling on his face. “Just sleepy.”
Before he knows it, he’s pulling into their driveway. Their little house greets them, Christmas lights decorating the front porch, although some of them have burnt out. He stops the car and gets out.
As he opens the passenger door to retrieve his boyfriend, he realizes that he’s fallen asleep again, head resting on the seatbelt.
He looks so peaceful like that, and Kaito doesn’t want to disturb him. Who is he to wake his boyfriend up from a drunk nap?
But sadly, he needs to take him inside the warm house. Tragic.
He carries him in, shutting the front door behind him with his foot. Kokichi’s eyebrows furrow at the sound, and Kaito makes sure to keep quiet the rest of the way to their bedroom.
He manages to pull some fresh pajamas on Kokichi, which consist of one of Kaito’s t-shirts and shorts, before pulling some on himself as well.
He’s never been so relieved to be home. With his boyfriend all to his lonesome, and drunken conversations that will leave him laughing for weeks.
Laying Kokichi on the bed gently, he takes his place on the other side and pulls the blanket over the two of them. He didn’t realize how tired he was until he got into bed. It’s got to be.. One? Two, now?
Late. He’ll go with that.
Kaito wraps his arms around his boyfriend and pulls him close to his chest. He presses a quick kiss on the top of his head, and to his surprise, it wakes him up.
“Mmm,” Kokichi hums, squirming a bit. His eyes blink open and he yawns.
Then Kaito feels a hand on his chest, and some weak pressure. Kokichi’s pushing him away. Trying to, anyway.
“..I hav’ a boyfriend..” Kokichi murmurs, and it takes every bone in Kaito’s body to not burst out laughing.
Instead of saying anything, he takes Kokichi’s chin in his hand and tilts it upwards, so he can see his face and realize who he is.
Recognition flashes in Kokichi’s eyes, albeit a little late, and he beams.
“Kai-chaaaan!” He says with a smile, wrapping his arms around his neck. “Hiii,”
Kaito chuckles. “Hi, honey.”
Kokichi giggles. “I miss you.”
“You miss me?” Kaito asks. “I’m right here, love.”
“Yaaaay,” Kokichi cheers quietly. “My Kai-chan.”
“My ‘Kichi.” Kaito parrots, pulling him close once again. He doesn’t struggle this time.
Kokichi hiccups. “Sleeping now,” he mutters, nuzzling his face into Kaito’s neck. Kaito just smiles and kisses his forehead.
“Night, honey. I love you.” He says.
“No,” Kokichi giggles. “Can’t.”
Kaito just laughs. He loves how soft Kokichi becomes when he’s like this. Somehow, it makes him love him even more by the minute.
He doesn’t fall asleep for a while. Instead he just gazes at Kokichi, full of love, unable to keep the kisses he imagines from landing on his face. Kokichi groans and swats his lips away every time he does so. Kaito smiles softly.
“I can,” He whispers to his sleeping boyfriend. “I love you.”
