Abroad Alone

Summary:

The Dursleys abandon Harry in Hawaii at the same time Tony DiNozzo is forgotten by his father in the same hotel.

Notes:

For your birthday

Work Text:

When Harry woke up, he knew something was wrong. It was obvious just by how he had woken up. There were no screams, no shouts for him to move his freakish arse so his relatives could get ready for the day. No demands that he fetch them breakfast. In fact the hotel suite was completely silent. Harry carefully opened the closet door, his relatives had been making him sleep in the walk-in closet that came with the suite, and saw that the room outside, Dudley’s room, was empty.

Harry frowned and stepped out of the closet and looked around more carefully. Dudley’s suitcases were missing.

“I have a bad feeling about this.” He mumbled to himself as he quickly hurried across the room to check on the rest of the suite. Dudley had been living out of his suitcase since they had arrived in Hawai’i and his stuff last night had been all over the floor as usual...so where was it now?

A quick investigation led to Harry discovering that the rest of the suite was just as empty and was clean as well as if the maid had already been by. His heart sank.

“No, no, no.” He paced. “Maybe I’m wrong.” He tried to reassure himself. “Maybe I accidently went to the wrong room last night?” But he knew that he hadn’t seen as his Aunt had made him… “Aunt Petunia made me tidy Dudley’s room.” His eyes widened. “I, I helped Dudley pack! I thought I was just helping him get ready when we go back to Britain in two days!” He looked around the empty hotel suite in horror. “Did they leave early and without me?”

Harry James Potter was a wizard. He had returned home from his first year at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry to find that his relatives were as reluctant to have him in their home as they always had been. His school things, and anything magical, were locked away in the shed as soon as he had stepped foot into the house. He was told to stay in his room, Dudley’s second bedroom, unless called out for chores and that ‘there better be no freakishness or else’. So in the end the only thing that helped him remember that magic wasn’t just a dream was Hedwig, poor Hedwig that had to live in the tree outside the house because his Uncle would murder her if she dared to enter the house. It was only Hedwig that reminded him that he was a wizard because his friends who had promised to write to him, never did. Neither Ron nor Hermione replied to any of his letters nor did they write any to him. Maybe they hadn’t liked him as much as they claimed to?

That was how the first month of his break went. He stayed in his room and only left to do the ridiculously long list of chores that his relatives required of him for him to earn his keep. His summer was looking to be rather miserable until Uncle Vernon came home from work with a rather peculiar expression on his face. Harry made sure that he was busy in the kitchen getting dinner ready, he didn’t want to be in his Uncle’s line of sight if he had bad news and it would likely be blamed on him.

“Vernon?” His aunt looked at her husband with concern. “What is it?”

Uncle Vernon didn’t reply straight away, instead he headed towards their little ‘bar’ to pour himself a tiple. He downed it and then another before speaking. “My boss has awarded us with a holiday to Hawaii.”

“That’s fantastic!” Aunt Petunia beamed. “Well done, love.”

“But the Boy has to come with us.”

“What?!” She froze mid-step.

“My boss is aware of the fact that we have him living with us and has provided us with tickets that have each of our names on them, including the boy.”

“We’ll just leave him in the hotel.” She decided after a long silent moment. It was only silent because Dudley was in his room playing on his game console otherwise he would be throwing a tantrum. “We’ve always been aware that there was a chance that something like this would happen.” She reminded him. “We got him a passport just in case, remember?”

“True.” Vernon grunted.

“Now, love, we need to celebrate! You were recognised by your boss for being so brilliant.” there was a squelchy wet sound as she kissed him. Harry grimaced and focused his attention back to cooking and thought about what he had just heard. He was going to get to go on holiday! Usually they left him with Mrs Figg when they went on holiday, which always sucked as Mrs Figg’s house stank of old boiled cabbage and her cats tried to smother him in his sleep. This time though, this time he would be going with his relatives! Sure it likely wasn’t going to be lots of fun, there was no way going anywhere with his relatives would be fun. But he would be leaving Britain for the time ever and that was enough for him to be excited about.

Now as Harry stood alone in the hotel suite, alone in Hawai’i, he wished that his relatives had left him with Mrs Figg.

Harry took a deep breath and thought about what he should do. He should probably head down to the front desk and inform a member of staff about the fact that his relatives have seemingly abandoned him in Hawai’i...but if he did that and then his relatives were found/caught before they left the country and he was returned to them...he did not want to think about the punishment he would face. So what could he do? Wasn’t there a father and son staying next door? Maybe he could knock and claim to be lost? He might end up with the same problem as the first option would generate but the more people that know that Harry was left the better, sometimes the people he had told about how the Dursleys forgot that he told them. Maybe this time he wouldn’t end up back at the Dursleys’.

Harry quickly got dressed in some of the nicer clothes that his Aunt had bought him for this trip. She hadn’t wanted to look abnormal in front of the airport security if they had searched their bags and found rags for clothes. That only proved that she knew that the way they treated him was wrong but she did it anyway. Once dressed, he picked up the keycard to the room that his relatives had kindly left for him in the little key basket by the door and found a note.

Freak,

We never wanted you. Stay here and if you mention us, or get returned to us, you’ll be in your cupboard until you turn eighteen when we can legally kick you out.

Hopefully the freaks won’t return you to us this time,

Petunia

Harry was honestly a little stunned at how stupid his aunt was. Did she really leave evidence that she was abandoning her twelve year old nephew in a foreign country? The words didn’t hurt, they weren’t anything new but he knew that the threat about being moved back to his cupboard was genuine. He put the note in his pocket, made sure he had the room key before leaving the suite.

Harry knocked on the door to the suite next to his and tried to wait patiently for it to be answered. He fidgeted slightly with the hem of his shirt as he waited. It felt like ages and ages but probably wasn’t all that long before the door finally opened.

A boy around his age peaked out through the gap.

“Can I help you?” He had an American accent.

“Um, is your dad in? Or an adult?” Harry asked feeling unsure. He hadn’t expected the boy to answer the door.

“Not at the moment but I can take a message…?” The boy opened the door a little wider. “What did you want with him anyway?”

With nothing to lose Harry just told him what he had planned to tell the adult. “My relatives abandoned me and I don’t know what to do.” He blurted out. “I figured it would be safe to ask your dad because well, he has a son and so is less likely to be a predator?” He had learnt about predators in his last year of primary school when a warning went round the school after a suspicious looking man had been seen lurking around the school gates.

“What do you mean they abandoned you?” This time the boy opened the door all the way.

“My relatives and I have never gotten along but they had to take me on this holiday with them because my Uncle’s boss arranged it. But when I woke up this morning they were gone and my aunt left me a letter telling me that they had left without me and they didn’t want me to be returned to them.”

“That’s messed up.” The boy said after a moment of silence. “Come in.” He gestured for Harry to enter. “We, abandoned kids, have to stick together.”

“Your dad left you here, too?” Harry felt stunned. It was one thing for his relatives to abandon him but for a father to leave their child? He could never imagine Mr Weasley abandoning any of his children. Hell, he doubted Malfoy’s parents would leave the prat somewhere and not go back for him.

“Yeah.” He grimaced. “He only brought me with him because he had a business deal to make with someone who appreciated a ‘family man’.”

“I’m Harry.”

“Tony.” They shook hands and silently formed an alliance. Both abandoned pre-teens would stick together.

They spent the next week between the two suites, running up the tabs maliciously on their families’ bills, after all someone had to pay for the room service at some point.

“So you’re telling me that your bastard relatives kept you in a cupboard until you were eleven?” Tony exclaimed as they sat on the main bed in Tony’s suite.

“Yeah.” Harry picked at the duvet cover so he could avoid looking at Tony. “They only moved me to Dudley’s second bedroom when a letter came that was addressed to my cupboard.”

“Wait, so someone knew that they were keeping you in there and all they did was send you a letter? What did it say.”

Harry paused. He was pretty sure that he wasn’t supposed to tell a muggle about magic but honestly, he didn’t see what he had to lose. All he had to his name currently were the clothes his aunt bought him and even then that was, what? Three sets of clothes? It's not like they could lock him up as he was underage…

“Do you believe in magic, Tony?” Harry asked, leaning closer.

“Magic?” His new best friend, because screw you Ron you didn’t write to me, repeated sceptically.

“Magic.” Harry cupped his hands and focused on the small piece of wandless magic that he had always been able to do, since before he knew magic was real. He made a ball of light in his hands.

“Whoa.” Tony beamed. “That is so cool!”

“Yeah.” Harry grinned back. “I could do more but I don’t have my wand. That’s back in England...and my relatives have probably snapped it by now.” He scowled at the thought. “They’ve probably destroyed all my things.”

Tony didn’t say anything, he just shifted until he was next to Harry instead of in front of him and pulled him against his side in a half hug.

When Tony told him about how his dad treated him...Harry’s accidental magic exploded all the lightbulbs in the suite.

“Oops?” He said sheepishly.

“That was awesome!” Tony grinned, the upsetting topic forgotten.

Tony and Harry were discovered shortly after that incident.

There was a knock on the door of the Dursley’s suite that the two boys were currently staying in. They exchanged confused looks as they hadn’t called for room service.

“Maybe it's a maid?” Tony suggested as he eyed the door nervously. They both knew that they were on borrowed time and honestly didn’t really have a plan further than ‘don’t get returned to their families’.

When the knock came again, Harry got to his feet. “I’ll answer it, you hide.” He told Tony.

“No, we’ll answer it together.” Tony stood as well. They both stared at the door before holding hands. Sure they were twelve, too old to hold hands but they both needed the comfort.

Harry opened the door just enough for the two of them to see out.

“Aloha.” A slim man of Asian descent with wavy brown hair stood on the other side of the door.

“Aloha.” Harry greeted him back.

“Are your parents in?” His voice was smooth and calm. “My name is Chin Ho Kelly, I’m with the Honolulu Police Department.”

“Can we see some ID?” Tony asked.

“Of course.” Chin Ho Kelly pulled out a badge. “Here.” He handed it over to Tony who snatched it viper quick and the boys shut the door.

“Is it real?” Harry whispered to Tony. He had never seen a police man’s badge before.

“I think so?” Tony shrugged. “It looks real enough. What are we going to do?”

“We tell him the truth and if he tries to send you back to your dad, then I will get angry.” Harry looked at him confidently, more confidently than he felt. He wouldn’t let his new best friend go back to his scum bag of a dad.

“What about you?”

“I have written proof that my relatives abandoned me,” Harry smirked and patted his pocket where he kept the note. “I don’t think they would send me back to them.”

“Okay.” Tony took a deep breath before reopening the door. The policeman was still waiting patiently outside and didn’t even look mad that they had shut the door on him. “We believe you.” He handed back the police badge and then stepped back, opening the door more.

“Its just us.” Harry piped up. “Both our families left without us.”

Chin Ho Kelly frowned. “How long ago did they leave?”

“For me? Just over five days.” Harry shrugged.

“Two days longer for me.” Tony confessed.

“Right.” Chin Ho Kelly sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “How old are you two?”

“Twelve.”

“We’re both twelve.”

“Okay,” He sighed. “I’m going to need to make a phone call.”

Harry and Tony ended up in a yellow conference room in the Honolulu Police Department station. They were plied with water, sandwiches and biscuits while they were waiting for social services. Harry had given the policeman the note from his aunt on the condition that he photocopies it and that Harry gets to keep a copy. He wanted to keep the proof that his aunt didn’t want him. Just in case everything disappeared like the cases did every time someone tried to investigate his home life in Surrey.

“Paranoid kid, aren’t you?” Chin Ho Kelly had quipped as he handed over the photocopy of the note.

“It's not paranoia if more than three investigations into my homelife fall through and everyone involved forgets about them each time.” Harry scowled and carefully put the not in his pocket. “I refuse to be returned to them as they seem to be the only ones that ever remember that were investigated.”

“I...I do not know what to say to that.” The policeman pursed his lips. “But I promise that you won’t be going back to your relatives.” He paused and then added. “Or your dad.” He included Tony.

“I’ll believe it when it happens.” Harry retorted before helping himself to a bottle of water.

“My dad is a con-man.” Tony bluntly told the man. “He’s good at getting out of trouble. He’s got good lawyers.”

“No lawyer is going to get him out of trouble for leaving his underage son in Hawaii.” Chin promised.

“We’ll see.” Tony snorted and picked up a sandwich. “Want one, Harry?” He pushed the plate over to the shorter, skinnier British boy.

“Thanks.” Harry grabbed one. “Ooh, cucumber.” He nibbled on it.

“These the kids?” A gruff older man asked as he walked into the conference room.

“Know of any other twelve year olds that have been abandoned in Hawaii?” Harry muttered to Tony who coughed to cover his laugh.

“Yeah, these are them.” Chin Ho Kelly shot Harry an amused look, he had clearly heard him. “Anthony DiNozzo Junior and Harry Potter.”

“Call me Tony.” Tony insisted with a scowl.

“Both were abandoned by their respective families.” Chin continued as if Tony hadn’t interrupted him. “We’re waiting on social services.”

“Are we sure they’re not runaways?” The older man asked.

“We have a note from Harry’s Aunt saying that she is abandoning him and the only reason we became aware of Tony is because his father’s lawyer called the hotel to inquire why room service charges were still being applied to DiNozzo Senior’s account.”

“Doesn’t mean that one of them isn’t a runaway.”

“Or you could ask us.” Harry butted in with a scowl. He was tired of adults talking over them as if they didn’t exist. The professors did that all the time at Hogwarts.

“And you could introduce yourself.” Tony added.

“You’re right.” The gruff man sighed. “I am Sargent John McGarrett, why don’t you two tell me what happened to you?”

“Dad brought me with him to Hawaii because he had a business meeting with a man that values someone with family values.” Tony started first. “I met the business man once, just to be shown off before being told to stay in the suite until my dad came back to get me. He came and went a few times, always telling me to stay in the room and then I woke up a week ago and his things were gone. He had left without me.”

“My Uncle Vernon got rewarded at work by his boss with tickets for a holiday in Hawaii.” Harry took over. “They would have left me with a babysitter but the ticket had my name on it and it would have been too ‘abnormal’ for them not to take me with them. I woke up five days ago to find my relatives gone and a note from my Aunt.”

“What do you mean by ‘abnormal’?” McGarrett asked.

“My relatives are obsessed with being normal and have hated me from the moment they found me on their doorstep the morning after my parents had been murdered. Apparently my aunt and mum had a falling out and so my aunt wasn’t best pleased to get stuck with me.” Harry rolled his eyes. “Although I don’t see how keeping a kid in the cupboard under the stairs is normal.”

“I don’t know what I want to ask about first.” McGarrett rubbed his eyes.

“Um, sir?” A new person entered the room. “Did I hear that one of the kids’ names was Harry Potter?”

“Uncle?” Chin looked confused.

“I think we’ll need ah, a different social service for Mr Potter.” The new man rubbed his chin. “Mr Potter, what would happen if I said ‘alohomora’?”

“Nothing unless you had a wand.” Harry replied with narrow eyes.

“Ah.” McGarrett’s widened. “You best get MACUSA on the line then, Keako.”

“MACUSA?” Harry asked.

“The American magical government.” Chin responded. “Uncle, how did you know Harry was magical?”

“You don’t keep up on the international news, like I do.” Keako sighed. “It’s a long story and not the time to explain it.”

“Also, if Tony wasn’t aware of magic, you just blew the statute.” Harry pointed out. The three men froze as they suddenly remembered that there was another child in the room.

“Is Mr DiNozzo magical?” McGarrett asked tentatively.

“He’s a squib.” Harry quickly lied. “Or rather his mum was. His dad’s a muggle and doesn’t know anything about magic.” He didn’t want his friend to get in trouble for knowing about magic when he wasn’t supposed to.

“Alright, cancel the no-maj services and get in contact with the MCS.” McGarrett looked at the twelve year olds and clarified. “Magical Children Services.”

“I’ll put a bolo out on for Harry’s relatives and Tony’s dad. Child abandonment is a crime after all.” Chin announced before swiftly leaving, his uncle following him to get the MCS.

In the end the boys were split up. Tony got put with a family on Rhode Island who immediately stuck him in a military boarding school along with his new siblings that already attended. He stayed until he graduated, he would then go on to Ohio University and graduate with a degree in physical education, and a broken leg that ended his sports career before it could get started.

Harry was adopted by a sweet Hawaiian couple who moved to Baltimore where Harry would eventually again meet Tony, almost ten years after they had last seen each other. Harry worked as an Auror and Tony as a Detective both of them had been inspired to join law enforcement after the HPD had kept their promise and neither of them had been returned to their relatives. They married a year after and Harry supported his husband when he moved to NCIS after discovering that his partner was dirty. They now both live in Washington near to Gibb’s home, which was a coincidence Harry insists.

The Dursleys were ‘enjoying’ their time without Harry. Vernon had died in prison once his fellow inmates had found out that he was in there for child neglect and abandonment. Petunia kept her head down and was out in two years but she was never allowed custody of Dudley and was only given supervised visits. Poor Dudley now lived with Aunt Marge who had managed to ensnare her next door neighbour, the ‘Colonel’ as a husband. The Colonel was strict but caring and got Dudley into shape. He turned out to be a relatively adjusted young man, although he did tend to have slips when his mum would visit.

Anthony DiNozzo Senior was arrested for child abandonment, child endangerment, and fraud. He spent the next ten years in prison before he was released.

As for the British Wizarding World? Voldemort was put down with extreme prejudice by the magical branch of the Royal Army. Fudge was replaced as Minister by Amelia Bones and Dumbledore was kicked out of all his positions for losing Harry and neglecting his duties.

SWAK

“Tony!” A short dark haired man rushed into the hospital room. Tony had been moved into a normal room after it was declared that he was not contagious and he was on the mend.

“Ha-Harry.” Tony wheezed as the man reached him.

“Why wasn’t I called?!” The man now known as Harry demanded.

“I’m sorry, who are you?” Kate asked, hand on hip.

“Harry DiNozzo.” He all but snarled at the woman. “Tony’s husband. Why wasn’t I informed that he was dying...that he almost died!” He clutched at his husband's hand, the man having fallen asleep again.

“Tony isn’t married.” Kate said instead of answering the question. “The man is a chronic skirt chaser.”

“It’s called a façade, Agent.” Harry rolled his eyes at her naivety. “Tony works for the Navy, even if its in a civilian branch, homosexuals aren’t exactly welcome. Does Don’t ask, Don’t tell, ring any bells?”

“I-”

“I want you to get Gibbs here so he can tell me why the hell he didn’t call me about my Husband contracting plague!”

“Because Probie didn’t follow protocol.” Gibbs replied before anything else could be said. He walked into the hospital room with two cups of coffee, one of which he handed to Harry. “I was the one that called your boss to let you know.”

“You need to train your Probie better.” He shot a look at Kate.

“Hey, I’m not the Probie.” She held up her hands defensively.

“You might as well be.” Harry muttered.

“Hey!” She had clearly heard him.

“I would like some time alone with my husband please.”

“Sure thing, you let me know if you need anything.” Gibbs clapped him on the shoulder. “Your man is strong, he’s over the hard part now.”

“No, the hard part has just begun.” Harry sighed fondly. “He’s going to be a nightmare through his rehab.”

“That sounds like a you problem.” Gibbs joked before he jerked his head, indicating that Kate should leave the room.

“How did you two meet anyway?” Kate asked, ignoring Gibbs’ silent demand.

“We were twelve and in Hawaii.” Harry smoothed Tony’s hair off his forehead. “And it was the best thing to ever happen to me.”

“Nah,” Tony wheezed. “Was best to ‘appen to me.”

“Hey, sweetheart.” Harry leant forward and pressed a kiss to his forehead. “You scared me.”

“Where-” Tony started to ask but cut off with a cough.

“Shh, its alright.” Harry soothed him. “I’m sorry I wasn’t with you, your probie messed up and I wasn’t told until ten minutes ago.”

“McGee.” It was surprising how much anger the exhausted man could put into that name.

“Be angry at him later, you just focus on getting better.” Harry calmed him.

“Kay.” Tony’s eyes fluttered. “Gimme a kiss?”

“Only because you’re not contagious.” Harry teased gently before kissing his husband. “I love you.”

“Love you more.”

“Agree to disagree.” Harry laughed wetly at the familiar back and forth. He… he almost lost the love of his life and wouldn’t have known about it until after the fact. If he had been told, he might have been able to get Tony transferred to the magical hospital: Graves’ Memorial and treated faster. Maybe he should still transfer him? They might be able to speed up or improve his recovery. He would have to bring it up with Tony when he was more conscious as the man kept fading in and out of it.

“We’ll leave you two alone.” Gibbs repeated. “Come on Kate.” He shot a dark look at the agent who this time complied.

“You better discipline your probie.” Harry called after them.

“You have my word.” Gibbs swore.

McGee was sent back to Norfolk and Kate was sent to FLETC for review courses while Tony recovered.
