Chapter Text
So Nightmare is very familiar with the language of flowers (he is a tree boi after all) and often gives Killer flowers. Though he isn't very affectionate in public (besides the flowers), the flowers always have super sappy romantic meanings.
One day Killer wants to return the favor, so he gets some flowers (prolly yellow carnations, meaning rejection & disappointment and somethin else idk) and leaves them with a little name tag (that says 'From Killer To Night' in what is obviously his best attempt at calligraphy)
Nightmare is very confused when he first finds em and just stands there for a minute before he takes a closer look at the flowers, realizes what they are, and remembers their meaning. Killer has essentially given him a bouquet that means 'I hate you and want to break up'. To Nightmare this is only confirmed by the fact that Killer didn't give them to him in person and his own self doubts (did he really think anyone would stay in a relationship with him? He's the Guardian of Negativity after all). (He forgets to take into account the fact that not everyone knows the language of flowers and that Killer's not exactly the brightest bulb) Cue Nightmare being very sad and let-down as he starts to avoid Killer as much as he can (even though he still wants to see him, but if Killer hates him, then Nightmare will leave him alone, he won't force Killer to have anything to do with him outside of work).
So he stops getting flowers for Killer after one last bouquet that means (essentially) heartbreak, sadness, guilt. Not once does it occur to this idiot that Killer knows absolutely jack shit about the language of flowers.
Killer, in the mean time, is extremely confused as to why Nightmare's been avoiding him and assumes that Nightmare wants to end their relationship and Killer also gets really sad (and tries to talk to Nightmare about it but Nightmare doesn't stick around long enough for them to talk) and thinks that it was his fault, that he did something wrong (but doesn't know WHAT exactly that something would have been)
So while the two of them are busy moping in their rooms, Dust comes to check on Killer one day (cause the others have noticed the difference, they're not blind) and he sees that last bouquet Killer got from Nightmare (Killer had it in a vase on his windowsill or something idk) and is like "Dude, did you break up with Nightmare???"
So Killer, lying face down in his bed, is like "Nah, he broke up with me"
And Dust is just "?????Then why had he been all sad, and gave you depression flowers???" and gestures vaguely to the flowers.
Killer sits up and is like "the fuck do you mean, 'depression flowers'? They're just flowers??"
And so Dust has to explain how the language of flowers works to Killer, and Killer - in a wondrous feat of clarity - makes the connection that the beginning of Nightmare's avoidance was around the time that he gave Nightmare that bouquet of flowers. So he asks Dust about what the flowers he got for Nightmare mean (it takes them a little bit to figure out which flowers they are, since Killer didn't really know the names of the flowers so they basically have to play verbal charades to figure out the flowers). And once they do figure it out, Dust explains the meanings and is like "That was literally the worst bouquet you could have chosen, how did you do that you idiot?"
Meanwhile Killer's just like oh shit oh shit it was my fault and starts panicking a little (cause what kind of partner is he if he can't even get flowers properly?? how could he mess up something that should have been so easy??)
So Dust tries to help him calm down, but Nightmare shows up pretty quick (since y'know he could feel Killer's emotions start to go haywire, as well as Dust's a bit)
Nightmare helps calm Killer down (he tells Dust that he can leave, so now it's just Nightmare and Killer) and Killer tells Nightmare how he knows NOTHING about the language of flowers and he's really really sorry for giving Nightmare hate flowers and he very much did not hate Nightmare thank you very much actually he very muchly loves him so please ignore the flowers they were very incorrect and yeah
Nightmare's just very happy that Killer does not, in fact, hate him, and is kind of confused (because doesn't everyone know the language of flowers? isn't it common knowledge?? apparently no it is not), and Killer starts getting nervous because Nightmare is being very quiet and not responding.
And then because I am a cliche SUCKER, when Nightmare feels Killer's anxiety start to rise again he pulls him into a hug and kisses him and is like "I love you too, we were both just acting like idiots" and then they just kinda sit there for a while while they calm down (and looking back they can laugh about it, because it really was so silly)
(In the future, Dust will Not Hesitate to bring this incident up - though very vaguely - in front of people, including the Stars a few times who were Very Confused)
