Summary:

Lovers, they called themselves.

Work Text:

Lovers, they called themselves. He’d been grilled before- tactfully by Adrien, less so by Alya, somewhere in the middle by the others- why that was the term he’d stuck to in describing his relationship to Felix. Why not boyfriend? Partner? It wasn’t all that deep, really, but Luka had always been better with music than words and he was never quite sure how to articulate it. To him, they were two resonant drums, different pitches but always harmonizing, the kind you continue to feel in your bones long after the actual sound has faded away into nothing. That’s the best he can do to describe it, explain what they are to each other. Really, they should be asking Felix, he’s the master weaver when it comes to crafting the abstract into something real, concrete.

To Luka, it just never made sense to use those words. They were labels that implied they ever had plans of building a life together, or keeping in regular contact, or being there for all each other's highs and lows. While since the fall of Hawkmoth Luka’s led a fairly quiet, steady life, Felix was an enigma- he’d leave, months at a time, no mention of where or when he was going to any of them. Sometimes when he was in town he’d confide in Luka, let him in on what he’d been up to as he’d been missing in action yet again, but more often than not the fact that he’d disappeared at all was left unspoken.

The truth was, Luka could never say for certain where his lover was or what he was doing at any given moment. Oftentimes, he’s not sure he could even hazard a viable guess. And if he weren’t so predictable, the same could presumably be said by Felix about him. They weren’t in each other’s lives like that.

How they were in each other’s lives was like this: Felix appearing in his apartment, unannounced, as he got home from a day of work, dinner on the stove and a jazz record on the player. Sweet, casual kisses (and sometimes more) as they softened in each other’s space. The quiet but nonetheless powerful assurance that they understood each other, trusted each other, had each other no matter the time or space that passed between them. The knowledge that at the end of the day Luka loved Felix, and Felix loved Luka, that even if they never changed their trajectories to wrap around each other they’d always eventually curve back into each other’s lives, just long enough, before veering away yet again.
