Chapter Text
Jay and Hailey roll into the crime scene first, arriving directly from a diner where they’d been grabbing breakfast.
Jay approaches the senior officer on the scene while Hailey peals off to check in with the ones interviewing neighbors.
“Detective Halstead.” He says, offering his hand, “What have we got?”
“Home invasion.” The man tells him, “Two dead. The wife and youngest son are on their way to East Mercy.”
“What are the odds that we get a chance to talk to them?” Jay asks.
“Both are critical so I wouldn’t put any bets on it.”
Jay lets out a sigh, shaking his head.
“Is crime scene looking at the shell casings?”
“Yeah. They said prelim is matching up to the shipment y’all are chasing but they’ll follow up with Intelligence when the final reports are ready.”
“Thanks, man.” Jay says, clapping the man on the shoulder before heading into the house.
Crime scene is searching the living room and he approaches the supervisor.
“Detective Halstead. I hear prelim matches our weapons. We got anything pointing to our crew?”
“Nothing yet, Detective.” She tells him, “We’re processing hundreds of fingerprint and DNA samples. If I had to guess, this house was one of the social centers of the block because initial evidence is real crowded.”
“Home security system?” He asks.
“Tech teams are starting on the login data looking at who armed and disarmed it and when. They do have some perimeter cameras and a doorbell cam.” She tells him.
“We’ll get that pulled and start looking it over.” He says, “Thanks.”
She nods and turns to one of her team members.
He turns to see Voight stepping through the door.
“Prints and DNA samples are gonna take some time. But we’ve got security cameras and a doorbell cam we want to look at. Prelim ballistics match our weapons.” he tells his boss. “We’ve got two survivors on the way to Med in critical condition.”
“Then let’s get going on this.” Voight agrees. “I’ll get Burgess and Ruzek on the cameras. Why don’t you go see how it’s coming with the neighbors and then call Atwater and have he and Torres hang out at Med?”
Jay nods and hurries out to join his wife, giving a quick greeting to Kim and Adam as he passes them.
“Anything good?” He asks as she turns to face him.
“Neighbor two doors down saw a suspicious vehicle.” She says. “I’ve had better descriptions but we might get somewhere with local traffic cams.”
“It'd be nice.” He mutters, “We need a lead, Hails. These guys are getting worse.”
She nods and he steps away, ringing Kevin.
Most of the team regroups at the precinct while Kevin and Dante hang around at the hospital waiting for their surviving victims to come out of surgery.
“I think we’ve got the vehicle that the neighbor was talking about.” Hailey says. “Its a blue Honda Odyssey. But I ran the plates and it comes up hot.”
“We’ve got the same basic profile on the doorbell cams.” Kim says.
“One of the perimeter cameras picks up the guys approaching.” Adam pipes up, “Same profile again, same masks. But they come from the direction where the neighbor saw the vehicle so I think that’s our lead at the moment.”
“Hang on,” Hailey says. “I just got the report on the auto theft. The old lady said she thought her neighbor’s son was behind it but they couldn’t prove it.”
“Check out the picture though.” Jay adds, leaning over her shoulder.
“Matches the profile on suspect three.” Kim agrees.
“It’s a loose profile.” Voight says, “We can’t tie him to the theft or the stolen car to the robbery. It’s too shaky to bring him in.”
“I’ll run traffic cams for the vehicle.” Hailey says. “If we can find him driving it, it’s enough to bring him in, right?”
“Start on the theft and then push and see if he’ll cave on the home invasions.” Jay says.
“Let’s see what we can find.” Voight agrees. “It’d help a hell of a lot if the mom or her son survives and can give us an ID.”
Everyone nods and they get back to work.
They get the camera angle on Jeffrey Shipley and bring him in for questioning.
And thus comes their first break in the case. The kid is seventeen and in so far over his head that it takes Jay less than twenty minutes to get him to cave like a deck of cards.
“I don’t know most of the others.” He says, “Just the guy who brought me in.”
“Would you be able to introduce a new player?” Jay asks.
“I…” the kid stammers before his eyes light up, “Yeah. Damien is looking for new blood. I mentioned a friend of my sister’s in passing but didn’t want to give details until I knew if she was in or not.”
Jay nods.
“I’ll have to sort out some details with my boss but if you can make this intro and we can bring the others down from it, you’ll get a much better deal.”
Jeffrey nods.
“I… I didn’t realize they were planning to hurt people.” He says. “I thought they were gonna keep the guns for intimation as long as people did what they said.”
Jay just nods.
