Chapter Text
(set before the movie)
The grocery store was alive with humans, pushing obnoxiously loud carts around in the building as they grabbed items. Steven, her, and Pearl were here getting supplies for a party later, to celebrate Greg's birthday.
"What is this?"
Peridot pointed confusedly at the bottles of coke lined up in the soda aisle, watching with confusion as Steven picked it up.
"This is coke! It's soda, it's really good."
"Is it one of those food things you need? There's so many choices for you humans that you built an entire building for it.."
Steven hummed. "It's not nessassry, but it tastes good?"
"Tastes... Good?"
"Yup! You wanna try?"
Pearl, who was picking up some sprite cans, bit her lip. "Steven, I'm not sure if that's a good idea.."
Steven pouted. "Aw, but why not?"
"I mean, I suppose we could let her have some at the party.." she grabbed the coke, taking two bottles and putting in the cart. Steven beamed, while Peridot just awkwardly looked at all of the 'sodas'.
"Strange..."
Eventually they exited the store, returning home where streamers were decorated everywhere. Normally they wouldn't go out of their way to give him such a good birthday, but with all of the scares he'd gotten recently they thought he deserved it.
Finally, the party had begun.
"Okay, so all you do is you pour it in a cup like so.." Steven poured the coke into the plastic party cup.
"And then you bring it up to your mouth, and swallow."
He brought the cup up to his lips, making a motion with his throat. Peridot reluctantly poured the coke into the cup, also bringing it up to her lips and letting it fall into her mouth.
The taste erupted in
her, making her pupils dilate with happiness.
She loved it.
"Why didn't you tell me about this sooner!?" She squeaked, Amethyst coming over after watching the whole thing.
"Did Peri discover coke! Hah! Look at her face!"
The gem was beaming before she poured a bunch of cups at lightspeed, downing them all.
Steven nervously laughed. "Uhh.. Peri? You're not supposed to have that many.."
Amethyst snorted. "I can't wait untill she gets the effects.."
(After the party)
Greg had left after saying his thanks, the crystal gems all tired and tuckered out.
Except for Peridot.
The gem was going crazy.
the green little gremlin litteralty bounded off the walls, running all over the place and climbing over and over and over again on shelves.
"I knew we shouldn't have given her soda!" Pearl watched as the hyper gem attempted to put herself in the microwave, quicky running over and grabbing her.
Lapis and Bismuth, who had arrived last only for the purpose of hanging out with everyone, looked at the green gem in concern as she wiggles in Pearl's grasp, muttering on about "research purposes".
"Is she okay?" Lapis mused.
Steven winced. "Yeah.. just really, really hyper. More than she already is."
Amethyst laughed poking Pearl which prompted her to drop Peridot, the little gem scampering away.
She abruptly ran into a wall.
She immediately got up, bouncing around as she ranted on so fast about something nobody could understand her.
Bismuth, who at this point was very confused picked the gem up with a large hand.
"Uh, Tiny? You okay?"
Steven sighed. "This is called a sugar rush, it'll die down eventually and turn into a sugar crash."
"A sugar what now?"
"She'll eventually just collapse, don't worry." Garnet said.
Almost immediately she said those words said thing started happening, the gem wriggling her way out of Bismuths fist before falling down face first onto the ground.
"Okay, note to self, don't give Peridot sugar." Pearl said, looking in concern at the basically dead gem.
Lapis crouched down, poking her. "Is she alive? Peridottt?"
...
Garnet picked the gem up, her limp body being set down on the couch.
"Atleast that's over."

Chapter 2: Just a baby
Summary:
Amethyst and Steven learn of Peridots age (not canon) and are surprised to learn how young she is.
Chapter Text
Steven, Amethyst, and Peridot were all sitting together on the tv, watching crying breakfast friends. Steven had never seen such a depressing yet wonderful show before in his life. He didn’t know much about movies, but even he knew that the protagonist was just as much a victim of circumstance as everyone else, as Garnet had wisely told him.
"Steven, what is the meaning of this show?" Peridot asked, confused.
It had been three hours and she was not amused. She still refused to speak good about the show unless Steven spoke first. "I find it incredibly dull and uninteresting."
Amethyst shrugged with her arms behind her head. “Well, you gotta have somethin’ to watch when there's nothing else to do."
eventually the show ended, leaving Steven to sort through DVD's to play next.
he frowned. "All of these are PG-13.." He glanced up at Peridot, who had her face buried in a pillow. "How about we go out tonight? We can pick one or two things to do!" He smiled brightly at her. The idea of spending quality time alone with Amethyst and Steven, even for a bit, felt like it would make Peridot smile. "What do you say?"
"Perhaps.."
"Why can't we just watch one of these?" Amethyst said, picking up a DVD. "Stevens 14, and me and Peridot are like, hundreds of years old."
Peridot stiffened.
what would happen to her if she watched it under 13? would she combust into flames? be shattered, endlessly get tortured?
she squeaked at the thoughts, her fingers clawing at eachother with fear.
"Hey Peridot, you okay?" Amethyst asked, concerned.
"Just fine..." She forced herself to relax, trying her best to act calm.
"Well then let's load one of these puppies in!"
Peridot snapped.
"What would happen!?" She blurted.
"Huh?"
"If one was to watch the movie under 13, I mean.."
Her voice lowered until only a whisper could be heard. "Would I die, Amethyst?"
Amethyst blinked, unsure how to answer.
"No," She finally replied. "But, you would go through.. endless suffering, and get.. Tortured by chickens!"
Peridot screamed, having no filter to understand she was joking. quickly the gem hid under the blankets, cowering.
"Hey, hey! it was only a joke!" Steven said with concern, glaring at Amethyst.
The purple gem just laughed in response. "Hah! I scared the living- hey wait a minute.. why are you so scared? You are hundreds of years old, right?"
Peridot did not respond. She continued hiding, her body trembling violently. She wasn't used to such questions. Not from humans, and certainly not from Amethyst.
She tried to calm down, breathing through the panic attack and forcing herself to think about other matters.
she would just have to tell the truth.
"No! I'm.. I'm.. I was made about five earth years ago.."
Amethyst and Steven stood there in stunned silence.
Amethyst looked at Peridot. "You lied?"
"I don't lie," Peridot replied indignantly. "Thats not my thing. And anyway, I never expected earth to care about age with these movies, so I wouldn't know!"
Amethyst stared at her dumbfounded.
"So you've been five this whole time.. we were hunting down a five year old!?"
She blushed. "What difference does that make?"
Amethyst growled in annoyance. "We thought that.."
Steven rested a hand on top of the bundle of blankets that was her. "So you've just been a baby this whole time?"
she nodded hesitantly. "That's how it seems to humans atleast.."
"Wow, this is kinda messed up," Amethyst admitted, shaking her head. She leaned over and pulled down the blankets. There Peridot lay, curled tightly into a ball, looking very uncomfortable. "Sorry Peri.."
"For what?" She said. "I was born out of a kindergarten already a full functioning gem, I'm not a baby.. despite me being.. oh stars, I am one, aren't I?"
Steven questionly looked at her. "What?"
"Well you see, I was.. undercooked. I was born much younger then I was supposed to be, not fully.. developed."
"Like a..." Amethyst realized.
"Oh my stars."

Chapter 3: Nightmares
Summary:
During a sleepover, Peridot projects her worst nightmare.
Chapter Text
It was a dark and peaceful night, rain thundering against the small beachouse as Peridot, Lapis, Pearl, Garnet, Steven, and Amethyst all lay awake, watching a scary movie on the tv. while the others were enjoying it, Steven and Peridot were cowering underneath the covers of their respective blankets in fear, Peridot cuddling her alien plushie close to her tiny body as her only comfort from all the horror films that had just been shown, while Steven sat next to her, holding his phone in one hand as he kept an eye out for any strange creatures or people who might try to come into the house.
Amethyst snorted. "Awh, you two scared?"
"Amethyst." Said Garnet warningly.
She rolled her eyes. "Aw man, this is too much fun." She grinned wickedly, then pulled up another horror film on Netflix, starting it up as the credits started to roll.
Peridot whimpered. "No!" She cried, curling further into herself as she buried her head in the plushies chest. She'd never seen anything like this before. It was so... scary. The way that the monsters always seemed to be coming towards them, clawing at them, their screams seeming deafening. She couldn't stop shivering from where she huddled under the bed sheets, and her arms wrapped around her legs tightly.
it felt far too familiar then she liked.
But Peridot didn't say that out loud because she wanted her friends to not worry about her and take care of themselves. "You're so mean." She mumbled instead, burying her face deeper in her plush toy.
"You'll get used to it." Said Pearl quietly. "The movies are quite scary sometimes, but you can handle yourself when danger comes.'' She smiled down at Peridot, who peeked out from her plushie to return it with a small smile of her own. "Besides, I bet you love this one!'' She said, pointing up at a particularly horrifying scene. "They look scary at first, but you just have to wait until the end to discover how really, truly terrifying this movie is!"
Peridot frowned at the screen and shivered again. How could anyone possibly enjoy this kind of thing? Humans were barbaric.
Steven yawned, signaling the start of his human sleep cycle.
Pearl groaned. "Do I really have to sleep? it's not like I need it, none of us but Steven do."
She complained, rubbing at her tired eyes. She didn't need sleep either.
"I think that if we want to stay ahead of the corrupted gems tomorrow morning we should all be asleep by now." Said Garnet sternly, glancing between Pearl and Amethyst. They both looked extremely annoyed but nodded anyway.
Peridot was confused however. "I've seen Lapis sleep, but I have no idea how to do the ritual myself."
Lapis smiled at her. "You just kind of lay down, close your eyes, and think about nothing."
"How do you think about nothing?" Peridots brain was always running around with thoughts, making her confused as how she could just.. not think of anything. it sounded impossible.
"Well, you don't really think about anything. You just let everything float away and let go of every thought you have for a few minutes."
That didn't make sense. Peridot would rather think than let go.
"Just try, okay?"
The little green gem nodded, hugging her Stuffie as everyone settled down.
just think about.. nothing.
-----------
"Hey Lapis! Lapis wake up!"
"hm?" she came to, sitting up to the noises of.. people talking? Steven was up too, alongside Pearl and Garnet as the purple gem pointed towards Peridot.
her dream was being projected through her gem.
"Look at it!"
Peridot was happily running around Yellow diamond as the huge gem gave her approval, making the little gem float in happiness in the dream. Her gem glowed brighter, and Peridot was able to fully see herself.
that was good. That was very good indeed.. But then, someone grabbed her.
Peridot shrieked. "LEAVE ME ALONE!" She yelped, flailing around wildly in her dreams.
Peridot turned around to reveal a Yellow agate, and the big strong gem squeezed her as she threw her roughly to the floor.
This wasn't a dream anymore.
it was a nightmare.
Everyone watched the dream in horror as the Agate pulled out a whip, and two citrines grasped her and chained her up onto a desk.
Peridot screamed as her hands, wrists, ankles, and chest were all chaffed, blistered, and cut by the sharp blades and nails.
the Agate was laughing, gleefully whipping her with the whip, as she was tied down.
Peridot struggled, screaming in pain. She was unable to get free. This was bad. She tried desperately to escape from these horrible things, but she was helpless.
The other gems were watching in dismay as Peridot writhed in agony on the ground, tears streaming down her cheeks.
they could tell what the Agate was doing to the poor, terrified creature she was torturing, and no one could help.
They stood there helplessly and powerless as the Agate lashed the poor gem's back over and over again, her voice dripping with glee at finally accomplishing something.
Peridot was shaking violently, sobbing silently as she continued to watch as the Agate whipped the poor creature.
she knew it was coming.
The Agate pulled out the ax.
Peridot closed her eyes, ready for the worst to happen.
but it didn't.
Instead she shot up in Stevens bed, everyone crowded around her in concern as the Gem cried out, backing away.
"NO! no I-"
Her eyes landed on the Gems in front of her and she saw the genuine worry in their expressions, saw how worried they were, saw how much they cared for her, and realized it was all just a terrible dream.
"What happened?!"
Pearl reached forward to touch her shoulder, but Peridot recoiled violently, causing Pearl to withdraw her hand. "Oh dear..."
She glanced over at Steven, who was staring at her with wide, worried eyes as well. Peridot sighed, laying back on the bed and covering her face with her hands as she let the sobs wrack her body again. Tears soaked into the pillow beneath her face.
The gems sat in silence for a few moments before Pearl decided that perhaps, they shouldn't push her right now. "It's alright, Peridot. You were having a dream."
Peridot shook her head vigorously, trying to convince herself of just that. She took a deep breath, letting herself cry silently once more.
After a few seconds of silence Peridot raised her head. "No.. it wasn't a dream." She whispered, sniffing as she wiped her tears from her face. "It was a memory." She sobbed, pulling at her triangular hair as the others gasped in horror.
They hadn't expected to hear such a thing from Peridot. They'd known that she was hurting inside, that she was suffering, but actually seeing her suffering brought them great anguish to witness, especially when it was directed at their precious baby Gem. Lapis felt pure rage boil in her as she thought about the terrible gem that had done that to her Peridot. "Who did that to you!?" She growled fiercely, reaching forwards to grab Peridot into an embrace as she held the smaller Gem protectively, ignoring Peridot's wails and cries as she pat her gently, whispering soothing words into her ear as she tried to calm her down.
Pearl and Steven shared a horrified glance, the latter looking absolutely stricken at the mention of someone harming their youngest member. He couldn't believe anyone would do such a thing to the tiny green gem that had always been so hyper and upbeat.
"Why would someone do that? Why would anyone hurt you?" He asked, squeezing her closer still. He didn't even care that they were all in their pajamas.
"I don't know." Peridot admitted after a few quiet moments. She was still struggling not to cry, her eyes still burning with tears.
Garnet placed a comforting hand on the youngers shoulder as she tried to comfort her too. "It's alright. It's okay. Just breathe for me, you're safe." She said calmly.
Peridot took a couple of shaky breaths before she calmed down a little, her shoulders slowly loosening.
"Now tell me why they harmed you, Peridot." Pearl urged softly, rubbing soft circles on the younger girl's arms as Peridot leaned into her touch.
Peridot hesitated, unsure of where to begin as her mind raced with questions for a moment.
But finally, her curiosity got the better of her and she spoke. "It's because.. I'm defective." She sniffled, wiping her tears with the heel of her hand. "Like Amethyst, except I was... undercooked." She clarified. "I was made with higher intelligence, but not...not anything else."
Garnet and Pearl froze at her statement, and they were unable to hide their reactions. The room was silent, save for Peridot's quiet crying.
"I... am." Peridot muttered quietly, turning her gaze downwards.
"W..what?" Pearl mumbled dumbly, her voice wavering. Her brows furrowed together, her eyes growing wide in surprise.
"I am defective, a failure.. I can never live up to what they expect of me." Peridot confessed, feeling the tears start to flow once more.
Steven felt himself tear up as he hugged Peridot tight. He held her tightly, wishing he could do more.
"Don't say that! You can't mean those things! What they expect is wrong, not you!"
Steven insisted desperately.
Peridot didn't reply and simply clung tightly to the young boy.
"I'm sorry."

Chapter Text
It was a beautiful day.
Peridot and Lapis were slowly forcing their minds awake, curled up around eachother in a hammock. The Green gem groggily opened her eyes, sitting up and falling out of the hammock.
"Clod!"
Lapis laughed lightly as the green gem brought herself up, shaking her green triangular mess of hair back into its shape.
"Ugh.. Good morning Lapis."
The yellow girl smiled fondly at her. "Good morning Peridot. Did you sleep okay?"
Peridot blinked rapidly for a minute before giving an affirmative thumbs up. "Yes I did." She paused for a moment. "I'm surprised you slept so soundly. You usually wake up early."
Lapis shrugged. "Eh. I woke up, but you looked too peaceful to be disturbed."
Peridot smiled, before turning her attention to the clock on a table. "Oh my stars! Lapis, we're late!"
she squeaked. Lapis laughed lightly as she stood up, stretching and heading towards a mirror to pay down her wild hair while Peridot ran down the hall.
"Ahhhh!" She said nervously. "Your hair looks fine Lapis, Lets just go!"
She grabbed Lapis by the wrist, trying not to yank on the blue gem's limb. They both headed out of the house, heading towards the class.
Lapis took one last look at herself in the mirror before walking out the door with Peridot dragging her by the hand.
------
"Ugh, where are they!" Steven said worriedly, staring at the class. There were 2 zebra jaspers, along with a couple amethysts and an onyx. Today was supposed to be the groups first meep morp class, but it seemed as if the blue and green gems in charge of it were running late.
Steven had already tried calling them and texting them to tell them that he wouldn't be ready to start without them, but his message went unanswered. He sighed, glancing up at Amethyst who looked very annoyed.
"Hey, is everything alright over there?" She asked. Steven nodded in response. "Alright. Well we can still start-"
barely 10 minutes late, Peridot and Lapis came running over. the green gem was muttering constant apologies, frantic.
Lapis, however, was standing calmly next to Peridot, looking completely relaxed despite Peridot's frantic state. She gave a small wave when she saw Steven.
"Sorry guys, we kinda lost track of time," she admitted sheepishly. "We should have been here earlier though. We got caught up talking about something or other and then we realized that we'd be late."
Steven frowned slightly, confused. "What happened to 'we'll be there soon'" he said, confused. Amethyst looked slightly confused too, frowning at Peridot.
"Um..." The blonde gem glanced at Lapis before looking away awkwardly. "Nothing..."
Steven raised an eyebrow, before turning to the class. "Anyways! Hello, first we will be taking attendance! let me just count you guys real quick.."
Peridot scanned the group with grin, untill she saw one specific Amethyst.
Her smile Immediately dropped, her eyes connecting with the Amethysts. Recognition flashed through thier faces as they stared at eachother, Peridots expression one of horror.
Lapis turned to see what Peridot was looking at, only to realize it was one of the Amethysts glaring directly at her. Her jaw clenchednin confusion. Peridot looked back at her, fear written across her face as she stared at Lapis. She opened her mouth to say something, before closing it again, a strangled noise coming fro. her throat.
stay. quiet. nobody needs to know about that amethyst...
Amethyst's eyes met hers, a sinister smirk playing on her lips.
Stay quiet. don't do anything stupid.
Lapis felt a chill run down her spine. Peridot hadn't spoken yet, but it didn't take an genius to figure out that something was wrong.
"Anyways, Peridot will take it from here!"
"W-What?"
Steven frowned. "Uhm, show them how to meep morp."
Peridot nervously chuckled. "Uh, Yes! of course!" She walked over to the large amount of clay on the table. "Alright everyone, this is meep morp. This is the simplest type of meep morp. It's kind of boring really, but I wanted you all to understand the basics. I want you all to come over here and demonstrate!"
The students all approached the clay. The green gem held out the clay to Lapis.
"I want you to try and make a meep morp."
Lapis hesitated, before taking the clay. She placed it on the table, and began to mold it. She made a few attempts, before finally getting it right. She looked up at Peridot, who was watching her intently.
"Well done Lapis!" Peridot turned to the rest of the class, avoiding eye contact with the Amethyst.
"Now you try!"
soon enough, the class was over as all the gems attempted their own meep morps.
Some failed spectacularly, some even succeeded, until all the gems left.
Amethyst was the last to leave. She paused in front of the table, before turning her cold eyes onto Peridot. Peridot flinched under the stare.
"I need to talk to you, 5xG. Alone."
Lapis narrowed her eyes at the large purple gem, Steven starting to look over.
"Hey. What's going on?"
Amethyst ignored him, grabbing the green Gem's arm and dragging her outside. Lapis started going after them, but was stopped by Steven.
"I think they know eachother. just let them talk."
little did he know how much of mistake that sentence was.
-----
Once they were out of ear shot, Amethyst let go of the smaller gem. Peridot stumbled backwards slightly, before regaining her balance and fixing her clothes.
"What the heck!"
Amethyst grinned as she pulled her into a dark alley, pinning her to the wall.
no..no no no not this again!
"NO-!" Peridot struggled, trying to push the large gem off her. A hand was pressed up against her mouth, and the gem leaned closer, Peridot struggling her her grasp, muffled shouts coming from the green gem.
the hand was removed.
"Pleeease stop it-" the purple gem mocked her.
Amethyst chuckled darkly. "Oh, I've missed this. So sweet~!" She nuzzled her face into the neck of Peridot, who could feel tears stinging at her eyes.
"STOP IT! STOP THIS NOW!" Tears streamed down Peridot's face.
the hand returned.
"Nope."
And suddenly the fist collided with her cheek. Peridot let out a cry of pain as she fell to the floor, clutching her face. Amethyst smirked.
"There we go~~"
she murmured before getting on top of her.
"No please-"
Peridot only had one option left now.
scream.
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHGGHHHH!"
"AAAAAAAAAHhhhhh!" Peridot screamed into the dark alleyway, her tiny fists beating desperately at Amethyst.
"AHHH-"
Amethyst pushed herself down on Peridots body. The smaller gem whimpered in pain, as her back arced upwards. the smaller gem struggled underneath her.
Lapis and Steven, who heard the blood curdling scream, rushed over to it, being met with the sight of Peridot on the ground, the Amethyst on top of her.
Lapis gasped as Peridot struggled, crying.
"GET OFF HER!"
Lapis pulled the tiny green gem out from under her, Steven rushing forward with his shield straight towards the gem. The amethyst poofed, being reduced to nothing but a purple gem as Steven bubbled her, sending her away into the temple.
Peridot sobbed, pulling at her hair.
The two ran over to Peridot, crouching down next to her.
"are you okay?!" Lapis cried.
Peridot gave them a weak nod. She rubbed at her sore cheek.
it was over now.
-------------------
"So you've been assaulted by her before?"
Steven was sitting by Peridot, who was on the couch and wrapped up in a blanket. the green gem nodded sullenly, staring down.
"That bitch!" Pearl growled.
Garnet frowned. "There always should be consent for that kind of thing. I'm so sorry Peridot."
Amethyst sighed and sat down next to Steven. Steven glared at the pink gems form.
"I don't know how it happened, and why she attacked me. But that doesn't mean she won't do it again." Peridot mumbled, staring fearfully at the blanket covering herself.
Lapis hugged her, letting the gem fall over, resting her head on her shoulder. "We won't let that happen Peri. I promise."
Peridot smiled.
"..Thankyou."
