Chapter 1: did you run me over??
Chapter Text
Jake woke up to the sound of quaint beeping and bright lights shining in his eyes. He groaned and shifted around, trying to get away from the light.
The light apparently had something against him as it was too bright to go back to sleep. He went to rub his eyes with his hand, only to be stopped by something tugging on what felt like his arm.
He gasped as he saw an iv right in his hand. He sat up abruptly, immediately regretting the action as a wave of pain went through his head.
He hastily looked around, slightly alarmed. Why was he hooked up to an IV? Why was it so bright? Oh god did he-
“You didn’t die, relax.”
His head snapped, finally registering the other person in the room. “Who the fuck are you?!” The man was sitting in his chair with his arms crossed, clearly unbothered by Jake’s question.
“Why am I in this hospital?” He squinted his eyes at the man. “Did you run me over?”
The man chuckled, “Kinda.”
Jake's face went blank, he was not being serious.
The man obviously found his expression entertaining as he started laughing, only making Jake more irritated. “Um hello? Mind explaining how you almost ran me over!?”
The man huffed, running a hand through his hair. “Let’s be clear, this is not my fault.”
“You’re kidding.”
He shook his head, making himself more comfortable on the chair. “We are here because you’re an idiot, not because I'm a bad driver.”
Jake scoffed, he was being ridiculous.
“Before you run your mouth, let me explain.”
Wow, this man was rude. If Jake’s head wasn't pounding he would’ve smacked him upside the head.
“I was leisurely driving to the ice rink when I saw an absolute fool filming himself biking across a street.” Regretfully that sounded like something Jake would do. “I had the green light so I went, but you obviously weren’t taught to look both ways before you cross the road so you went anyway.”
Jake just rolled his eyes at the attitude.
“Thankfully I stopped before I hit you, but you were so stunned you fell off your bike and hit the concrete.” He looked to the sky like he was recalling a fond memory. “It was quite funny actually.”
Jake was fuming. Who does this guy think he is? He comes into the hospital room just to lecture him about looking before crossing a street, and proceeds to blame him for his probable concussion.
(Whether he was right or not, Jake didn’t question it.)
“You’re incredible. How could you-”
“Jake Sim?” Both of their heads whipped to the nurse walking into the room.
She eyed them both, her gaze settling on the man. “I’m assuming you’re Park Sunghoon?” Sunghoon nodded sweetly and she gave a smile back. If only she saw how much of a bitch he was being before she walked in.
She took a glance at Jake and his vitals, “How was he when he woke up?” She waited patiently, looking at Sunghoon.
“He seems okay, how do you feel love?” he glanced at Jake with a soft smile but Jake just looked at him with his eyes blown wide.
love?! Jake knew he was doped up but he knew this couldn’t be his imagination.
Jake saw the man he now knew as Sunghoon, walk over concerned (why does he look concerned he was making fun of him a minute ago.) “Hey is something wrong?” Sunghoon caressed the top of Jake's hand and he froze. “I- what?”
The nurse looked between the two before sighing. “Brief confusion is expected, in about a half hour he should be back to normal.” She quickly checked his vitals once more and did a final checkup before stepping towards the door. “Jake you seem fine for now, the doctor should be with you shortly. Press the button beside you or ask your boyfriend to come and get me if you need assistance.”
Jake gaped at the nurse as she walked out the door.
“Boyfriend? I must’ve misheard that. Probably all the stuff they’re pumping into me.”
There’s no way this Sunghoon guy was his boyfriend, he swears he’s been single since highschool. Between university and work his plate was full enough, adding the love of someone else just stressed him out.
Sunghoon gave him a tight lipped smile, shaking his head. “You didn’t mishear that, she thinks I’m your boyfriend.”
Jake was appalled, did he really black out that badly?
Before questions started spewing out of his mouth, Sunghoon started explaining. “The only way they would let me in here is if I was family so I had to come up with something and it’s the first thing I said.”
The words were rushed out of his mouth but Jake just looked at him skeptically. “Okay… no offense but why did you want to come in here.”
Sunghoon scoffed, crossing his arms. “I had to make sure you didn’t die, I didn’t want any blood on my hands.”
Jake lifted a hand up to hit his arm, quickly regretting it as his IV line got caught on something.
That just made Sunghoon laugh and Jake scowl. “Do you know who I am?” Jake was fully aware about how pompous the question sounded but he was unsure of how to word the question differently.
“Yes.” Sunghoon went and sat back down on the hospital chair, “You’re a fucking idiot who decided to film himself biking across an intersection.”
“I'm injured, you should be nicer to me.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes. “You are completely fine.”
Jake let out a huff, pulling the blanket on him higher. “No, you gave a YouTube star a concussion. How am I supposed to make videos now?” Sunghoons smile faded and he looked at Jake incredulously. “… A YouTube star?”
Jake nodded and Sunghoon stared before doubling over in laughter. “Man that’s an excuse I thought I’d never hear. What are you, 12?”
Jake was this close to pressing the emergency button to get Sunghoon kicked out by the doctor. He is supposed to be resting right now but this man makes him want to pull his own hair out. “Look up LJS.”
Sunghoon raised an eyebrow but listened anyway.
Jake slowly saw Sunghoons cocky face turn shocked as he kept looking back and forth between him and the phone. “There is no way. You have millions of subscribers.”
The corners of his mouth turned up. “I’m aware, it’s my channel.”
It seemed like Sunghoon was still scrolling, shaking his head in disbelief. “You- what do you even do?”
“I’m like a vlog channel, but not as boring.” That sounded ridiculous and Jake acknowledges it.
Sunghoon gave him an exasperated look. “What?”
“Record myself and sometimes my friends' daily activities that are actually interesting. No ‘what I ate for breakfast today!’ or ‘run errands with me’, I think I’d die of boredom from making them myself.” His videos are all over the place, but that’s why his viewers watch him, they never know what’s going on and it’s entertaining. “I stream sometimes too.”
Sunghoon slowly nodded, probably not grasping no what he was saying. It didn’t even seem like he was listening.
—————
“I can’t believe I have to do this.” Sunghoon was given the task to help him get back home, Jake had insisted that he drive. “That’s what you get for hitting me.”
Sunghoon groaned. “Listen, I could let go of you right now and you’d fall, do you want that?” Sunghoons hand was around his waist as he held one of Jake's hands. Honestly to an outside view, they looked like a cute couple. “Shut up and walk me to my apartment.”
“Um no. That was not part of the deal.” Sunghoon had thought that all he had to do was drive Jake to his apartment and help him out. He was not under the impression that he would basically be Jakes personal escort.
“I don’t care now let’s go.” He put his other hand over Sunghoons on his waist, guiding them up to his apartment, both unaware of the flash and click of something behind them.

—————
Jake ended up giving sunghoon his address (sue him for being curious), and was waiting for him to come up.
The doorbell rang and Jake went and opened the door for Sunghoon. “Hello Jakey.”
He waltzed in and Jake closed the door behind him with a groan. “Why are you calling me Jakey.”
He simply shrugged. Jake silently shook his head while walking back to the sofa. “Sit down and tell me your idea.”
He made himself comfortable, watching Sunghoon do the same.
After a second of silence, Sunghoon looked at him with a grin, Jake already knew he was going to regret this.
“What if we fake a relationship?” Jake choked, that was nothing close to what he was expecting. “You want to do what?!”
He was expecting a brief way to deal with this problem. A small Instagram post, a YouTube video maybe? But Fake dating? You’ve gotta be kidding.
And to be honest he didn’t think anything needed to be done about it, people on the internet like to talk. But he apparently had other ideas, ridiculous ones.
Sunghoon put his hands out in front of him, trying to de-escalate. “Calm down and let me explain.”
Jake stopped talking and leaned back slightly on the couch. He’d be lying if he said we weren't curious as to why he came up with this crazy idea.
“I was doing some research on you.” Jake raised his eyebrows teasingly but Sunghoon shut it down immediately. “Shut up.”
He cleared his voice with slightly red ears. “Anyways, I was doing some research and found out that you're going to a convention met up thing soon.” Jake slowly nodded, vidcon was coming up. “I also gathered that you’re painstakingly single and your fans love to clown you for it.”
Jake groaned, knowing that Sunghoon was absolutely correct. For some reason his fans (and friends) deem him as ‘undateable’.
He doesn’t know when this rumor that Jake Sim gets no bitches started, but once it came out, it came out strong.
The day Jake found out that #jakesimnobitches was a hashtag on twitter was the thing that almost made him quit YouTube. He genuinely wanted to cry.
“I thought that we could both benefit from this.”
Jake huffed, leaning forward, elbows against his knees. “Okay fine. Let’s say I agree to this god awful idea, what do you want?”
Sunghoon shrugged, sitting further back into the couch, putting an arm across the armrest. “I’d want you to pay for my gas, maybe some new skating stuff. I drive to the rink all the time and gas is expensive.”
Jake squinted his eyes skeptically. “You’re serious? That’s all you want?” Sunghoon simply nodded. “I’m a simple man Sim… and I like drama.”
—————
Sunghoon was back at his house… again.
He honestly had no idea why his house had become the meetup spot between them but he didn't put up a fight. It was easier not leaving his house anyway.
The two were meeting again today because they had to figure out how this was all gonna work. Sunghoon had practice the first time he came over so he couldn’t stay for long.
They were once again situated on Jake's couch in his living room. “We have to soft launch it.”
Sunghoons face scrunched. “What the fuck does that mean.” Jake just rolled his eyes.
The more he talked to Sunghoon, the more he realized how out of touch he was. He was convinced he lived in the countryside and only left his house to skate. “We have to tease it. It’ll be no fun if I just come out and say I have a boyfriend.”
Sunghoon hummed and took a drink of water. “It seems like you’ve thought a lot about this.”
Jake looked at him incredulously. “You’re literally the one that came up with the idea.”
“Yeah but I didn’t plan ahead.” Jake sighed, of course he didn’t plan ahead. “Okay well they already know that I might be with someone, but for all they know it could just be a friend, so we have to get past friend territory to convince everyone.”
Sunghoon looked so lost. “Okay and how are we going to do that?”
“Well, I have to film a video soon.” He’s been planning this video for a while but it works out perfectly with their (his) plan. “Sometimes I film my videos and sometimes my editor Riki films them.”
He's known Riki since elementary school. They practically grew up together and he helped Jake build his YouTube account from the ground up. He is almost positive that he wouldn’t be nearly as successful if he didn’t have Riki to help him on the way.
“He talks while he films with me and even though they don’t see him much, they know his voice and are very fond of him.” He’s convinced some of his viewers like Riki more than him. “They’ll know if someone else is filming me.” He’s also hoping Sunghoon is good a filming.
“We can also do the little stuff like the insta photos and slight interruptions on streams.” Sunghoon slowly nodded before adjusting his position. “I have a skating jacket I could give you.”
Jake just furrowed his eyebrows, silently telling him to explain. “It doesn’t say my name so it won’t be giving too much away, but it does say my competition team.”
Jake leaned back on the couch with a satisfied look. “Wow… that’s a smart idea.”
Sunghoon looked at him offended. “Why do you sound so surprised?”
He ran a hand through his hair. “You don’t want me to answer that question.” Sunghoon mumbled the same thing under his breath mockingly.
“Do you have practice Tuesday afternoon?” Sunghoon simply shook his head. “Great, that’s when operation Sim-Park will start.” Jake started to get up, Sunghoon following suit. “Never call it that again.” His face scrunched up, slightly shaking his head.
Jake chose to ignore it, standing there as Sunghoon put on his shoes. Jake silently urged him to get out of his house.
As Sunghoon had one foot out the door he turned around, eyes teasing. “It should be Park-Sim though, it sounds better.”
“Get out.” He poked Sunghoon’s side, roughly might he add, getting him out, closing the door right behind him.
Jake heard a faint curse from the other side of the door making him chuckle, this might not be that bad after all.
Chapter 3: it’s not bad at all
Chapter Text
Jake had thought he would have to drag Sunghoon out, but he was surprisingly compliant. He was, however, wearing a god awful sweater but Jake knew to pick his battles.
He got himself comfortable in front of the camera, finally turning it on.
“Hello everyone, today you’re here with Jake Sim and-” Sunghoon snorted. “Is that your intro? You’re so lame.” Jake gave a glare to Sunghoon. “Shut it and let me finish.”
Jake shifted his eyes from behind the camera to the lense, the glare quickly washing away from his face. “Like I was saying, today I’m gonna be trying to make macarons from scratch.”
“Technically they’re not from scratch, you have pre-made-” The viewers could see Jake's glare but they couldn’t see Sunghoons shit eating grin.
“I’m going to throw you out that window if you don't shut it.” Sunghoon put his hand up in surrender even though the camera couldn’t see it. “Me oh my I angered the celebrity, please don’t cancel me.” Jake just huffed.
The video just started and they were already bickering, it was gonna be a long video.
—————
Sunghoon was peacefully taking off his skates in the locker room, well as peaceful as you can get with two hockey idiots in front of you bickering.
“Hee, I’m telling you the game is this Sunday.”
“No it’s not. We never have games on Sunday!” Sunghoon grabbed the skate guards from his bag beside him, still unbothered. “Last practice coach literally said it was switched because of a scheduling error.”
Heeseung shook his head in protest.
Jay crossed his arms. “Maybe if you weren’t so busy thinking about your little sunshine we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
“Do not bring Sunoo into this. Would you like me to bring up your insufferable pining for Jungwon? Get a grip man!”
Sunghoon was inturpted by a ring from his phone. Even his friends stopped their heated argument, very confused, no one ever called Sunghoon.
Sunghoon, mistakenly, answered the phone without looking at the caller id, just to get his ear practically blown off. “Park, get yourself over to my house right now!” Sunghoon quickly pulled the phone away from his ear, face scrunched. “Stop yelling!”
What the hell was happening.
“I wouldn’t have to yell if you weren’t so stupid!” Sunghoon closed his eyes and took a deep breath, pulling the phone back to his face. “Listen, my love,” He heard Jake scoff over the phone. “You can’t just expect me to leave practice because you’re demanding me to come over.”
Sometime during their first conversation they had decided to try and talk like a couple just to get used to it as they would eventually have to pretend in front of people. The cute names were in there, but they definitely had to work on making their conversations sound endearing, not murderous.
“Your practice is done.” How does he know that? They’re both unsure. “Stop complaining and come over.” Sunghoon was about to protest before Jake swiftly added on. “And get me an iced chai with a-”
“Shot of espresso and a splash of vanilla, I know.” Sunghoon had apparently become Jake's coffee boy as he was always asked to get something in his way over, hense knowing his order by heart. “I hate you.”
Jake chuckled. “You love me baby.” Sunghoon was glad that no one could see the slight twinge of colour on his cheeks. “I’ll be over soon.”
He shook his head, silently swearing under his breath. The things he did for this goddamn man.
He hung up the call, glancing up. “I have to go…” His eyes flickered between the unmoving people in front of him. “Why are you both staring at me?”
The two were suspicious of Sunghoon. He seemed to be on his phone way more and started to disappear out of nowhere. They also knew Sunghoon had a grand total of four friends, the others being the respective partners of Heeseung and Jay, so they knew he wasn’t with them.
The only other explanation would be a girlfriend (or boyfriend in this case).
Heeseung squinted his eyes as Jay's hands flew up. “I fucking knew it.”
Sunghoon stood there confused, had he missed something while talking to Jake?
“Don’t act all stupid, you’re in a relationship with someone and was talking to them on the phone.” His eyes blew open at Heeseungs accusation.
“What?!” The two haven’t discussed what was going to happen with their friends. But Sunghoon quickly pulled himself together, “I mean, I don’t know what you’re talking about”
Heeseung crossed his arms. “You called them ‘my love’ and you know their order off by heart, I’ve seen you trying to remember what your own sister gets, this person must be special.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes as his two friends were watching him put his stuff away. “He’s no one.”
Jay gasped and hit Heeseungs side. “So it’s a he! I knew you had some gay in you.”
“You can’t just say that- How did you even know?”
Sunghoon glanced at him. “Why did you think I approached you first Heeseung?” They had shared a class together back in their first year of university and Sunghoon took it upon himself to say hi. “Do you really think it was because I wanted to be friends with you?”
Heeseungs naw dropped as Jay nodded. “He’s right Hee, you’re hot.”
“I- what the fuck?” Jay just simply waved him off, “Don’t worry, the novelty wore off.”
Sunghoon let out a small laugh, “God, did it ever.”
Heeseung didn’t know if he should be honored or offended.
“Anyway, you’re not important right now, he is.” Jay pointed a harsh finger at Sunghoon, taking that as his sign to run out of there.
“You’re not getting away from us Sunghoon!”
—————
Jake was peacefully scrolling through tiktok when a video of him baking came up. He love these videos and would always like and comment, but this one was different.
The caption simply said “if they’re not dating the man behind the camera definitely wants him.” His eyebrows furrowed as he listened to the video, just to hear Sunghoon saying stupidly sweet things behind the camera.
He scrolled through the comments with his lips pursed in a line. He told Sunghoon to be subtle.
It didn’t help that his viewers were going absolutely crazy. This was what prompted his unexpected call to Sunghoon.
Some had even made compilations of Sunghoons sweet comments so that was exactly what he showed Sunghoon when he got to his house.
—
“Man he’s stupid.” Jake just dropped a whole egg into the mixture. “…it’s kind of endearing though.”
—
“You think he knows he has flour in his hair?” Jake had made the mistake of throwing the flour bag on the counter, which resulted in it getting absolutely everywhere, that included on Sunghoon. The part where he was cursing Jake out was obviously cut. “Maybe I should go fix it for him.”
—
Jake had said something that he apparently found funny, laughing loudly at himself. Sunghoon just admired. “He has a really nice smile.”
—
The video finished and Sunghoon just laughed.
Jake didn’t really know what was so funny. “Why did you have to lay it on so thick! People are going crazy!”
Sunghoon leaned back in his chair with a sly smile. “You told me to act in love with you and I did. I’d say I did a fantastic job.”
Jake had to give it to him, he did do a great job at selling it. People on the internet were convinced they were together.
Some said they weren’t together because they were sure Jake wasn’t gay. He wasn’t sure where they got that from.
He’s made some bold comments about men before in videos and on his streams. He’s also said he likes men a couple times in passing, but he guesses some didn’t take him seriously.
And others were just angry that it wasn’t Riki bullying Jake from behind the camera.
Regardless, he was pretty sure most didn’t connect it to the mystery man.
Sunghoon continued, “Besides, how did you not know about this? Do you not review your videos before they get posted?” Jake simply shook his head. “No, Riki edits it then posts it.”
He trusted Riki to edit the videos well. Yes there have been times where Riki puts unnecessarily embarrassing moments in there. Riki had said that it’s all in good fun, which translates to he just likes pissing Jake off.
To be completely honest Jake trusted him with his life. Even though they’ve never expressed that to each other, he knows Riki feels the same way.
“And why are you so stressed about it?”
Jake paused; he wouldn't say he was stressed, it was more a feeling of worry. “I’m stressed because now the plan is in full swing, there’s no backing out.”
Sunghoon clicked his tounge and was about to interject when Jakes face fell into his hands. “Oh no.”
Sunghoon didn’t answerin, knowing that Jake was gonna continue. “Riki was the one that edited the video.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes. “Wow great observation.” Jake raised his head to glare at Sunghoon before sinking into the chair. “Him editing it means he saw the things you said about me, also meaning he thinks we’re together.” Sunghoons face scrunches at that. “Oh…”
“And he hasn’t even texted me about it and that means I’m going to get bombarded the next time I see him, which will inevitably be soon.” Riki had the habit of barging into his apartment unannounced. When he was in school there had been many times where he'd come home to find Riki on the couch just watching tv.
He had just graduated last year with a degree in astrophysics, no one seemed to believe him when he mentioned it. Sunghoon demanded to see his degree because he was in awe.
Riki was in his second year and somehow still had time to edit and be the leader of the dance team, how he had so much time Jake didn’t even know.
“Wait speaking of that, how are we going to act around our friends? Do you want to tell them or?” It seemed like Sunghoon thought for a second before shaking his head. “Naw, let’s try and fool everyone, it’ll be fun.”
“Okay, I’m fine with-” The door slammed open and Jakes eyes widened. “Fuck that’s Riki.” He got and Sunghoon looked at him frantically. “How do you know that.”
“He barges into my house like that all the time.” He heard the sound of shows getting taken off.
He pulls the frozen Sunghoon up. “We are in love Sunghoon.” He reluctantly grabbed Jake's hand. “Easier said than done.” The way Jake raised his fist fist Sunghoon right up.
Riki sauntered into the living room. “Jake, are you home.. oh it’s you.” That was not the greeting either of them were expecting.
“…what?” Jake was dumbfounded.
Riki did a once over of both of them, folding his arms across his chest. “What are you guys doing? I’m not stupid you know.”
Sunghoon stood there staring and Jake was trying to find something to say.
Riki paid no attention to it, sitting on the couch that the two had been sitting on before. He grabbed the tv remote, glancing at the two. “You both need to work on your acting skills. It looks like you’re constipated.”
Once the word’s registered, Jake dropped Sunghoons hand and stood in front of Riki with his arms crossed.
Rikis eyebrows furrowed as he tried to push Jake away with his foot. “Um hello? I’m trying to watch wheel of fortune.”
Jake took the remote and handed it back to the confused Sunghoon who was silently watching this all unfold.
“You knew?” Riki sighed, he wasn’t getting out of this conversation. “At first I just thought you guys were crazy, but then you started complaining about him being a bad boyfriend, which made him get mad and clarify that you were his fake boyfriend.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.” He stood up and took the remote from Sunghoon, plopping himself back on the couch. “Now move, the first round is starting.”
Jake obliged, sitting beside him on the couch. “Are you not going to ask why I have a fake boyfriend?”
Niki didn’t even glance at Jake. “Nope.”
“Why?”
“Don’t care.”
Sunghoon chuckled and Jake glared. “What is so funny?”
Sunghoon lightly shook his head. “It’s funny seeing other people make fun of you, it lifts my spirits.”
Jake rolls his eyes. “Asshole.”
Sunghoon raised his eyebrows and crossed his arms. “Bitch.”
“Whore.”
“Motherfucker”
“You little shit I’m going to-”
Riki abruptly stood up. “Oh good god you guys are going to kill me.”
They both broke away from whatever feud they had going on. “Where are you going?”
Riki huffed. “I’m going to watch my show.” He started walking down the hallway.
“The only other place with a tv is my room!”
“I know!” They saw Riki turn a corner, the sound of a closing door coming soon after. Jake just grumbled to himself, getting up to go get a glass of water.
Sunghoon stayed on the couch, his eyes following Jake in awe. “Is he usually like that?”
Jake scoffed, “Regretfully yes.” He turned back around, leaning against his kitchen island which was facing the sitting Sunghoon. “Are your friends like this?”
Sunghoon thought for a moment before slightly shaking his head. “I don’t know, kinda? My friends are very… eccentric.” That was true, it was very very true.
“But,” he paused, “Nevermind.”
Jake quickly shook his head. “Nope. You started saying something and now you have to finish it.”
He gave Jake a glare before cautiously, and reluctantly, starting to speak. “I only have, wow this is gonna sound pathetic, I only have like four friends.”
As soon as the words tumbled out of his mouth his head fell in his hands. “Man saying this to someone who literally has people begging to be their friend is so embarrassing.”
Jake simply shook his head. “No it’s not.” Sunghoon raised his head. He had expected laughter, maybe a joke? This level of sincerity was not even considered.
“And my case isn’t necessarily better.” Sunghoons eyebrows furrowed. “Huh? I see you taking and making videos with a ton of other people?”
Sunghoon wasn’t wrong. Jake was known for getting along with everyone and being a social butterfly. “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean we’re friends. We usually make a video or two and stay acquainted.” It's not like Jake tried to push people away, it for some reason relationships never seemed to go further then exchanging small pleasantries or going out every once and a while.
He doesn’t want to sound pretentious or selective but sometimes he finds it hard to befriend other people with a huge following. It’s always thrown him off and he’s never known why.
Maybe that’s why he hasn't made any other close friends, they might think the same way. “So yes I have many friends, but I only have one friend, which is Riki.”
And even with that in mind, befriending quote on quote “normal people”, was never easy. Most are genuine, but he’s had a couple bad experiences that he doesn’t want to relive.
Maybe that’s why he’s felt so comfortable with Sunghoon, he didn’t help because he wanted to gain a following.
“He’s the only one I’d ever share my struggles or super personal things with. He’s seen me at my lowest and I’ve seen him like that too.”
Jake cleared his throat, stopping himself from getting too sentimental. “Regardless, in my opinion, having a solid person, or persons in your case, is much more valuable than having 20 surface level friends.”
Jake pushed himself off the counter as Sunghoon softly spoke. “Hm, I’ve never thought about it that way.”
To be honest, as much as he may complain about his friends, he feels the same way about them. His first encounter with Heeseung in university was something to remember and his elementary school long friendship with Jay was practically unbreakable at this point. And even though he’s only known some for a couple years, they’re just as dear to him as his childhood friends.
“Whatever,” Jake makes his way over to the couch. “I’ve got Riki… and you.” The last part was mumbled, meaning Sunghoon didn’t even know he said something else.
After Jake mentally slapped himself, he stood in front of the couch, eyes shifting between Sunghoon and the seat beside him. The slightly cryptic action was starting to creep Sunghoon out. “Are you okay?” He started to look at himself, thinking that he had something on him.
Jake just shook his head before letting out a sharp breath. “Don’t kill me, I have an idea.” Sunghoon gave him a bit of a side eye but let him continue. “We should start touching each other more.” Sunghoons eyes blew open and Jake frantically shook his hands. “Wait! Let me explain!”
This was a thought that came up in passing when Riki was first talking to them. He knew this was something they had to fix if they wanted to convince other people.
“You saw how awkward we were trying to hold hands when Riki came in.” Sunghoon grimaced. “So, I’m saying we practice that story of stuff so we get comfortable with looking like a normal couple.” Jake stood there passively as Sunghoon just stared.
He eventually gave Jake a small nod. “That makes sense.” He patted the seat beside him. “Grab the remote and sit down.”
“Okay?” Jake followed the instructions, mildly confused.
He sat down beside Sunghoon at a good distance away before moving closer to him with their thighs touching.
Sunghoon slowly grasped his hand, placing it on Jake's lap. “Is this okay?” Jake's eyes flickered between their clasped hands and Sunghoons gentil gaze.
“Yeah.” His hand was really warm. “It’s not bad at all actually.”

They don’t know how, but the sitting straight beside each other with their hands clasped turned into Sunghoon having his arm around Jake's shoulder and Jake leaning his head into Sunghoon’s chest.
“This might be a bit of a bold question but uh, do you only like guys?” Jake was very curious and he thought now was the only somewhat appropriate time to ask. “Or everyone maybe?”
Sunghoon shrugged. “I guess.” Sunghoon wasn't someone who put a label on his sexuality. He never felt like he needed to. Who he likes is his business, no one else’s. “If I see someone I think is hot, then they’re hot. I don’t really care if it’s a boy or girl or whoever.”
Jake hummed in agreement, that makes sense. “Do other people know?”
“Maybe?”
Jake scrunched his face, prompting Sunghoon to continue. “I’ve never told anyone directly.” He knew his family was cool with it and his friends, who were literally dating other men, were obviously fine with it too.
“But when someone,” he threw a glare down at Jake, “Called me, my friends heard me call you love and whatever and I might’ve blabbed and said he so now they think I’m dating a guy.” Surprisingly his friends hadn’t brought up the incident, he wasn’t even sure if Sunoo and Jungwon knew.
“One of my friends said that he knew there was gay in me? I don’t even know what that was supposed to mean.” Sunghoon was still confused. A part of him wanted to ask Jay to elaborate, but he felt like it might do more harm than good. “What about you?”
“I’m bi. To be completely honest it kinda just happened.” Jake remembers the night vividly. “I met this guy at a party during my first week at university. One thing led to another and we were dating for almost a year.” Looking back, Jake should’ve realized the signs. He never had any internalized issues, he just genuinely didn’t put the pieces together until that night.
They eventually fell into silence, wordlessly watching the tv.
Subconsciously Sunghoon had took a glance at Jake's face and it immediately brought a smile to his face. The look on Jake's face was filled with nothing but happiness and admiration. “You’re beautiful.”
Jake started talking before Sunghoon could even register what came out of his mouth. “Me? You’re talking about me?”
That thought was supposed to stay in his own head but now that it was out in the open he decided to honor it. “Very beautiful actually.” They stared at each other, Jake in shock and Sunghoon in amusement.
Jake was very obviously flustered, making Sunghoon laugh. “You’re cute when you’re embarrassed.”
Jake huffed, breaking eye contact. “Like you’re one to talk, you are absolutely gorgeous.”
Sunghoon paused. “Really?” Jake turned back towards him in disbelief. “Sunghoon, be for real.”
He dumbly nodded. “I’m being serious.”
Jake searched Sunghoons face for any traces of a joke, but he quickly realized that Sunghoon was actually being serious. He turned slightly more to get a better look at Sunghoon. “I say this with the utmost confidence, no one thinks you're ugly.”
“Well don’t you two look awfully comfortable.” The two jumped as they saw Niki standing there with his arms crossed and eyebrows raised.
“How long have you been standing there?!” Nikis face scrunched up. “Long enough to want to throw up.” All Niki knew was that they’d have no more problems pretending to be dating.
Sunghoon laughed and Jake tried to mask the red on his cheeks, pretending to be unaffected by returning to their previous conversation. “Niki, do you think Sunghoon's hot?” Niki scoffed in disbelief. “Of course I do, I have eyes you know.”
“Why are you leaving so soon?” Niki was hastily putting his shoes on at the door. “Taki invited me out.”
“Aww that’s so cute.” Niki looked at Jake with a scowl and Sunghoon saw a light red brush up on his cheeks. “Fuck off.”
He chuckled. “Have fun with your boyfriend!”
Niki carelessly threw on his jacket. “We are not dating.”
Jake raised his eyebrows accusingly. “You literally told me the other night how you wanted to kiss the living daylights out of him because he was so-”
“I’m going.” The door slammed and Jake laughed, Sunghoon lightly joining in.
—————
“Ok I’ve decided our next step.” Jake was sitting on the counter watching Sunghoon make a sandwich. “I’m listening.”
Jake doesn’t know how but Sunghoon awkwardly sitting on his couch turned into him rummaging through his fridge whenever he pleased. “I’m going to stream and have you ‘inturpt’ me, calling me Jaeyun. That way they’ll know you're not just a friend.”
Jake smiled at him but he raised his eyebrows slightly confused. “Am I missing something? How is me calling you Jaeyun going to get me past friend territory?”
“No one except my family calls me Jaeyun, which is my Korean name. Sometimes Niki calls me jaeyun, but it’s only in specific situations, meaning not very often.” He only calls him jaeyun when he’s sick or sad, he’s very whiny when he’s sick.
“My viewers know this as I’ve explained why I prefer they all call me Jake.” It’s not like Jake didn’t like his Korean name, it was far from that actually. It just felt like an intimate thing between the people he is close to.
Sunghoon just hummed in agreement, cutting his sandwich in half. “Okay then, when do you want to do this?”
“How about now?” Jake slid off the counter. “I have to stream soon anyway. Just sit here and do whatever while I set up.”
It didn’t even seem like Sunghoon was fully registering what he was saying. “Are you listening?” He dumbly nodded, mouth full of bread.
Jake just sighed, shaking his head. “Just stay here, I’ll text you when it’s okay to come in. Say whatever you want.”
—————
“What the hell!” He started frantically pressing on his computer keys trying to stop his mario from falling down. “My game glitched, I did not fall.”
Usually all Jake did was play games with his fans on stream. It was something simple that he and his fans enjoyed so he continued doing it, it was also great that it was not anything he had to properly plan for.
As his fans were laughing at him in his chat, he let out a huff, sitting back in his chair. “Should we keep playing smash bros or do we switch it up?” He was trying to stall as had texted Sunghoon to come and interrupt him. He didn’t want it to happen in the middle of a game.
After sitting and making small talk for a couple more minutes, he inwardly cursed at Sunghoon for obviously not reading his messages. He was probably sleeping or watching his stupid reality tv shows. Just by being around Sunghoon Jake had seen so many of those god awful-
The door creaked open and he froze. “Yunnie,” Sunghoon was out of view as the door was on the side of the room not visible to the camera. Jake slightly turned his head towards the door. Jake tried not to get thrown off by the nickname. “Yeah?” He told Sunghoon to call him Jaeyun, but even then it didn’t stop the slight butterflies in his stomach. “Do you want anything from the store?”
woozyberry: did I hear that right
159wally: you guys niki doesn’t even call him jaeyun causually let alone a nickname
nopenonah: YUNNIE?? that’s so cute omfg
votezh: his voice wow
Jake pretended to think. “Apples and spicy ramen, the one I normally eat.” His eyes were still on Sunghoon, not looking at the chat that was completely blowing up.
Sunghoon nodded, “Got it.”
“Can you pick up food please?” He hoped the look he gave Sunghoon told him that he actually wanted food, meaning that this wasn’t part of their fake plan.
Sunghoon stalled for a second before nodding in realization. “From our place?” Jake had no idea what their place was but he just nodded, hoping the smile on his face was sweet enough.
Apparently it was because the comments started going crazy.
jakery123: their place???
ilyiwysm: STOP THEY HAVE A PLACE
shanpbin_110: wow jake actually pulled someone
jklmnop?78: this is actually adorable I’m crying
“Okay, love you.” Jake really tried to keep his surprise at bay. “Love you too.” And the door closed.
Jake took a breath and forced his gaze back to the chat that was now moving miles a minute. “Why are you guys freaking out? I say I love you to my friends, even Niki.” He’s kinda lying. Niki and Jake have a special way of showing their love.
niri05: idk where he’s getting that from
niri05: those words don’t belong between us
Jake pursed his lips in frustration at Niki’s comment. “I did not ask for your opinion Niki.” It was foolish of him to think that he would try to help him sell this fake relationship. “Why are you here? Go study.”
niri05: I had to see how this played out
He inwardly cursed at him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He made himself more comfortable in his chair, now loading up animal crossing. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Jake didn’t tell him about this. How the hell did Niki even find out?
“I don’t know what you guys see in him. He’s always so weird and cryptic, it’s unsettling sometimes.” He was baffled by how in love his fans were with Niki. The amount of times they’ve begged him to start a channel of his own was insane.
He’s still in shock from the disaster that took place when Niki uploaded his first dance video on his Instagram.
niri05: I make your boring life interesting
niri05: guys he has no friends
Jake gasped. “And you have friends Niki? Where? I’ve never seen them because you’re always here with me.”
niri05: I’m leaving
Them and his fans both knew this was a harmless joke. Jake likes to say their love language was terrorizing each other. “Yeah, that’s what I thought”
Their bickering ended there as Jake continued playing.
Sunghoon
I got your food bitch
Jake
where the hell did this hostility come from??
Sunghoon
I was being to nice to you and it was starting to freak me out
I had to get back into by hating Jake groove
Jake
ok fuck you
Sunghoon
oh wouldn’t you like that?
Jake could see the smug look on his face.
Jake
I was gonna give you money for the food you bought but you don’t deserve it
Unbeknownst to him he had a dumb lovestruck look on his face.
Sunghoon
wow I’m so hurt
Jake
whore
Sunghoon
ok now who’s being the aggressive one?
Jake
idk what you’re talking about
Sunghoon
shut up and end your stream
the food is getting cold
Once Jake eventually realized he was still live, he practically threw his phone on his desk with an awkward smile. “I think that’s enough for today, I’m starting to get tired.”
taper56: jake everyone knows you’re going to
spend time with mr sexy voice
enhalover: the way you were smiling at your phone was adorable
jsjake: have fun jake ;))
Jake chose to ignore the comments, giving a final goodbye and turning off his stream. He turned off all his equipment, making his way to the main room with his living room and kitchen.
He was immediately hit by the smell of his favourite chicken place. “Chicken?” His face lit up as he went to join Sunghoon at the table.
“Isn’t this your favourite fast food place?” Sunghoon took a bite of his chicken while Jake nodded.
He raised a price close to his mouth, freezing at a sudden question that popped in his head. He gently placed the chicken down. “How do you know it’s my favourite place?” Jake looked at him suspiciously. Sunghoon was completely avoiding his gaze, taking a drink of water. “…It was a guess.”
Jake crossed his arms, eyebrows raised. Sunghoon looked up at Jake, trying to see if he was buying his excuse. He wasn’t. “Okay fine.” He huffed with slightly red cheeks. “I might’ve heard you talking about it with Niki and I might’ve written it down just in case.”
Jake gave him a soft smile. “That’s cute, now eat.” Sunghoon cleared his throat with a quick nod.
The more time he spent with sunghoon, the more he realized how attentive he was. He was someone who would remember little things that you mention in passing and pick up on expressions and body language very quickly.
The thing that Jake didn’t know was that Shnghoon wasn’t like this with everyone, in fact he was pretty forgetful. Although, he apparently had a knack for remembering things about people he really cared about.
“Oh I have something to give you.” Sunghoon got up, walking to the entrance door. They both had finished eating, basic small talk happening as they were enjoying their meal. He came back with what looked like a blue sports jacket. “Here, take it.”
Jake pursed his lips but took it anyway. “What is this?” As he was inspecting it Sunghoon started to explain. “It’s my competition jacket. It doesn’t have my name on it but you’re able to tell I’m on the Seoul national figure skating team.” People in Seoul get this jacket if they’re good enough to compete professionally. “It will narrow it down for your viewers.” Seeing people online trying to figure out who the ‘hot mysterious boyfriend’ was (Jake hated that nickname - it gave a huge boost to Sunghoons already gigantic ego). “Okay, thank you. I’ll wear it next time I go out.”
Sunghoon gave him a nod, checking the time on his phone. “I have practice so I do have to leave.” He got up, putting his dishes in the sink. “Text me what the next step is in our plan is okay?” Jake gave him a small nod, following him to the door.
“Uh Hoon?” He stopped in the door frame and turned around. “Yeah?”
Jake rocked back and forth in the soles of his feet with a shy smile. “Don’t hurt yourself during practice.” Sunghoon had a knack for being careless. “Drive safe too.”
Sunghoon looked at him with a gentil stare, admiration evident in his eyes. “Thank you Jaeyun.” He stared for a moment before turning quickly on his feet, bolting out the door, equally flustered and embarrassed.
Jake just chuckled at him, watching him speed walk down the apartment hallway.
change ‘Jake’ to ‘yunnie’?
yes no

They both wore a huge smile on their face for the rest of the day.

Chapter Text
Sunghoon was waiting on the bleachers during Jay and Heeseungs hockey practice as they planned to go out after. His practice always ended before theirs began so this was a frequent occurrence. Sunoo and Jungwon were planning on joining him to come watch their boyfriends play.
He was peacefully playing hay day on his phone when he felt someone sit beside him. He looked to his right and saw Jungwon, Sunoo now sitting on the seat in front of them both. Before he could even say something Sunoo turned around and gave him a once over with his lips pursed. “Where’s your jacket?”
Sunghoons eyebrows furrowed as he glanced down at his clothes. “I’m literally wearing one right now.” Was he missing something? Sunghoon always felt like he was missing something.
Jungwon simply shook his head, “No, you always wear your skating jacket to practice. So where is it?”
That was true. The jacket was Sunghoon’s pride and joy. He coughed awkwardly. “It’s dirty…?”
Sunoo laughed. “You’re terrible at lying.” Sunghoon made a noise of discontent but Sunoo paid no mind to it. “You also treat that jacket like it’s made of gold, you’d wash it immediately if it had any sort of dirt on it.”
Sunghoon was about to bullshit an excuse before a harsh whistle blew in the distance before a booming voice made its way around the rink. “Great job guys! Don’t forget about the game on Monday.” Many thank you couch and have a great day coach were heard as all the guys made their way towards the change room.
Sunghoon was grateful for this as now they could go wait for Jay and Heeseung, meaning he was free of interrogation, for now at least.
As they were walking towards the door, Sunoo pointed a finger at him. “This conversation is not done.” Sunghoon gulped, he knew there was no way he was getting out of this. Sunoo and Jungwon were individually really smart in separate ways, so putting them together the two were unstoppable.
“Hey sunny!” Sunoo gave Heeseung a smile as Jay went and gave Jungwoom a big hug.
Sunghoon looked away disgusted, already walking to the car. “Let’s go.”
The two went to Sunoos car, saying they’ll meet Sunghoon and the other two at the Jungwons apartment.
Sunghoon agreed as they all got in the car. The two hockey idiots were in the back as Sunghoons skating bag was in the front seat.
He turned on the car, ready to go when he got a text
yunnie
pick me up
His face scrunched up.
hoon<3
uh why
yunnie
I filmed a video with hanni and minji and I’m tired
I don’t want to take the bus home
hoon<3
what makes you think I’m going to pick you up?
yunnie
you love me too much
now come get me
‘yunnie’ shared his location with you
A small smile graced his face
hoon<3
as much as id love to go completely out of my way to pick you up
I’m out with my friends right now
“Invite him.” Sunghoon practically jumped out of his seat at the voice that appeared right beside his face. “Hee, what the hell!”
His phone was on the car floor as the two in the back laughed. “I see you’re messaging your boyfriend.” Sunghoon grumbled. “Why were you two looking at my phone screen.”
Jay finally spoke up, voice teasing. “You had a dumb smile on your face, the same one Heeseung makes when he talks about Sunoo.” Jay got hit in the side for that. “We got curious and saw that you were texting someone named yunnie cause he needed you to pick him up. So go! I’m sure the other two will be fine with it.”
Heeseung nodded in agreement. “Those two love to talk. Plus, they don’t know you have a boyfriend.”
Sunghoon rolled his eyes, picking up his phone. “He’s not my boyfriend.” Sunghoon is denying it, but that didn’t stop him from telling Jake he was on his way.
The ride was filled with endless questions and teasing remarks, making Sunghoon very glad when they pulled up to the apartment complex.
Jake saw the car and Sunghoons small wave.
Without looking at the back, Jake gets into the car with a huff. “You know how hard it was to cover this bruise today?” Sunghoon’s gaze shifted as the two in the back sat there with their mouths agape.
“You practically jumped on me when I walked through the front door and just had to do this. My god.”
—
Sunghoon was at Jakes house yesterday, (once again, Jake didn’t know why), and Jake went downstairs to take out the trash. Once he came back up he opened the door to see Sunghoon standing with a broom facing the corner, seemingly petrified of a spider in the wall.
“Uh hoon? What are you- ow!” Jake got a broom stick to the neck. “Oh my god I’m sorry!” Jakes voice startled Sunghoon making him to spin around, ultimately hitting Jake causing a bruise to form there.
—
It looked rather suspicious so Jake decided to hide it. That brings them into the situation they’re in right now.
“Jake.” Sunghoon glanced to the back, seeing his two friends trying not to burst out into laughter.
“It was so hot in their apartment but I couldn’t take this sweater off.” He took his hoodie off, leaving him in his t-shirt. “If she asked what this was what I supposed to say? Oh yeah, my boyfriend did this last night. Like no!”
Sunghoon sighed and hit Jake. “Stop it.” He tried to use his eyes to signal to the back, Jake obviously wasn’t getting it. “What, are you embarrassed now? Yesterday it seemed like you enjoyed it very much.” Yesterday after the initial shock wore off, Sunghoon was in fact laughing at Jake.
“Jake, look!” He finally pointed to the now snickering idiots in the back. Jake's face paled. “Oh my god.”
Sunghoons rolled his eyes. “That’s what I was trying to tell you!” Jake glared at him. “Well you could’ve tried harder! They probably think we… you know.”
“We probably think you had sex?” Jake's eyes blew wide open and Sunghoon reprimanded his friend. “Jay you can’t say that!” He shrugged. “What’s the big deal? I assumed you guys were together anyway.”
Jake's head was now in his hands, face burning.
Heeseung slightly shook his head. “They could be friends with benefits. It’s 2023, it’s getting more normalized.” Jay nodded in agreement. “Oh that’s true. That would explain the secrecy.”
“Oh good god.” Sunghoons hands tan over his face, equally frustrated and embarrassed. “I can’t do this right now, let’s start driving.”
—————
It was a long drive to Jungwons apartment but somehow Sunghoon had convinced the two in the back to not ask questions until they met the others.
They gave him and Jake a second to talk before they met up with the other four.
The two were still sitting in the car after Jay and Heeseung got out. Once Sunghoon made sure the coast was clear, he turned to Jake apologetically. “Sorry about my friends. They don’t know how to keep their mouths shut.”
Jake only laughed, apparently being over the initial embarrassment of the situation. “No need to apologize. You weren’t kidding when you said your friends were eccentric.”
They’re crazy but they keep him entertained so he doesn’t complain (much). “But what are we doing about the boyfriend thing? Is our plan in full force now?” Sunghoon thought for a second while Jake continued. “They’re your friends so I’m leaving the decision up to you.”
Sunghoon did contemplate just playing it off as if the two were just friends, but he knew how insistent his friends were. They would badger him constantly and he’d eventually blurt out that they were ‘together’. “Let’s do it, it will be simpler for everyone.”
Jake nodded in agreement before getting out of the car, following Sunghoon towards the apartment building and into the elevator.
He clicked floor 8, turning towards Jake. “They are most likely going to ask endless questions, I apologize in advance.” Jake just chuckled while following Sunghoon as he walked to the door.
They stopped in front of door 803 and Sunghoon took a breath before lightly grabbing Jake's hand in his own. “You ready love?”
He waited for Jake to nod before opening the door.
As they were taking their shoes off in the entrance way, they heard the guys in the living room arguing.
“There is no way he has a boyfriend hee, I don’t believe you.”
Heeseung crossed his arms, staring at the sitting Sunoo. “Babe we literally saw him in the car!”
“He’s right.” Jay, who was sitting on the opposite couch with his hand around Jungwon’s shoulders, finally butted in. “You should’ve seen how smiley he was when he was talking to him, gross.”
Apparently they were too caught up in their little dispute to hear the door clicking as the two made their way into the living room.
Sunghoon cleared his throat and they all whipped their heads to the two. Sunoo just gasped. “Oh my god you’re real.” Jungwon kicked him for being rude and Sunoo just glared at him. “Don’t say that.”
Some would think that his friends were being rude, but Sunghoon didn’t take any real offense to their words. To be honest a while ago he probably would’ve agreed with them.
He’s not very social, opting to keep to himself when he’s not with his friends. He’s had the opportunity to talk to others but he doesn’t really feel the need to. He has his solid group of friends and a job he loves, going completely out of his way to make more friends kinda feels pointless.
“Don’t even Jungwon, you’re telling me you thought they were serious?” At that Jungwon backed down.
Sunghoons hands flew up in frustration. “Does no one believe in me?” The two should’ve had the courtesy to look bashful, but they both simply shook their heads and Jake looked to the side, trying to hold in a laugh.
Sunghoon looked at his boyfriend, kinda insulted. “And why are you laughing?”
Jake shook his head and grabbed Sunghoons hand again, trying to salvage the conversation. “I’m not laughing.” He raised an eyebrow, obviously not buying it. Jake then caved. “Ok how am I not supposed to laugh? Your friends are funny when they’re making fun of you.”
Sunghoon just pursed his lips and crossed his arms as Sunoo started laughing. “Oh I like you.” He patted the seat to the right of him as Heeseung was sitting on his left. “Come sit.”
Jake nodded as he grabbed the hand of the now sulky Sunghoon.
Once they got situated on the couch, all the attention was on them. “How long have you guys been together?” They actually had talked about this when planning out the relationship. “Probably about 7 months.”
When they first discussed this whole arrangement they agreed on saying they were together for 5 months, but because of their busy schedules this plan had already been ongoing for around 2 months. Jake just decided to be realistic as it meant less possible ways to mess up.
“There is no way.” Heesung simply shook his head. “That makes no sense.”
Jay nodded in agreement. “If you’ve been together for so long, why did you suddenly get all giggly in just the past couple months?” Jake raised his eyebrow teasingly, realizing he was the one making Sunghoon flustered.
Sunghoon just ignored him with red cheeks. “Not true. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Heeseung gasped. “They must’ve-” Sunoo lightly hit his thigh in reprimand. “Don’t say that, it must be more wholesome right?” Sunoo turned to them with questioning eyes.
Jake merely shrugged, sporting a teasing smile. Sunghoon eyed Jake. “Don’t you say anything.” That only made Jake's smile grow and a look of disgust grace Sunoos face. “Oh my god ew- I can’t get that image out of my head now.”
“It’s not bad I swear, it’s just when I said I love you.” Sunghoon silently patted himself on the back for that one. This wasn’t something they discussed and he was terrible at acting so he was proud. Jake obviously had to ruin what he had set up. “Yup, that and-”
Sunghoon interrupted him by shaking his head. “Topic change or else I’m going to sit over there.” Sunghoon knew Jake was doing this to get back at all the times he was made fun of, but knowing this didn’t make it any less frustrating. Jake was going to open his mouth to tease him again but Sunghoon just huffed and stood up.
Jake quickly grabbed his hand, gently stopping him from moving. “Okay sorry baby, I’ll stop.” Sunghoon took one look at Jake's soft eyes and he was already sitting back down. Him having those eyes was an unfair advantage.
Sunoo gagged. “Jay you were right, they are gross.” Jake gives Sunghoon’s thigh a small pat, deciding to leave his hand there. Sunghoon tried his best to not implode on the spot.
“Anyways,” Their attention turned to Jungwon. “You kind of have an accent, where are you from?”
Jake's face lit up immediately. “I’m from Australia, I moved here around here around 8th grade”
“I’m assuming you can speak English then?” Jake nodded and Sunghoon butted in. “His Australian accent is sexy.”
That earned him a slap to the stomach. “What! I’m telling the truth!” This wasn’t part of the act. When he heard Jake talking to his family on the phone in english swore his heart stopped.
“Australia? I’ve always wanted to visit there, it looks beautiful.” Jake nodded happily at Heeseung. “It’s so pretty. I mean it gets really hot and there are a lot of bugs, but minus that it's amazing!”
Heeseung had always had an odd fascination with Australia so being able to talk to someone who lived there was so fun for him. “You wanna see pictures?”
“Of course.”
Jake smiled, pulling out his phone.
Sunghoon absolutely loved how Jake's eyes lit up when he was talking about something he loved, it always made his eyes shine brighter than they were before. His face also got more animated and his gestures got bigger. The first time Sunghoon saw this he barely grasped anything Jake was saying, only being able to focus on the happy boy in front of him.
—————
They had all been hanging out for hours.
Jake and Heeseungs australia conversation eventually started to include Jay as he mentioned he was from Seattle meaning he could also speak english.
They also got into a heated game of Mario cart and summer smash bros. Jake thought he was gonna wait but Sunghoon beat him by a landslide. Who knew he was so good at games?
At a little break in their conversation, Jake, who was leaning on Sunghoons shoulder, turned his head up to Sunghoon with a kind smile and a soft voice. “Your friends are amazing.” Jake was being completely honest.
They had all been so fun and welcoming. The initial fear of trying to fit in with Sunghoons friends disappeared almost instantly. Jake was glad that Sunghoon had such a solid group of friends. It comforted him knowing that he has people who truly care about him. And it seemed like Sunghoon felt the same way towards them.
All night Jake had been taking secret glances at Sunghoon when Heeseung made a stupid joke or Sunoo and Jungwon started bickering because a huge smile would grace his face or a laugh would bubble out of him. He loved to see Sunghoon so comfortable.
A big grin graced Sunghoon’s face as he rubbed Jakes shoulder. “I chose good friends, didn't I?” Jake could feel that that was meant to be a joke, but he took in seriously. “You did hoon.”
Their sincere moment was broken by Sunoo’s question. “Hey Jakey,” That name came out of nowhere. Sunghoon wasn’t particularly fond of it but he left it alone. “Do you have any friends you’d like to introduce us to? I need to see some fresh faces, I’m kinda getting sick of them.”
Jake turned his head back to the group. “I think my friend Niki would like you guys, the poor boy is in need of more friends.” Sunghoon scoffed. “Isn’t it the other way around?” Jake pinched his thigh and he retracted the statement.
However, Sunoo gasped. “Excuse me, don’t insult my favourite person like that.”
Sunghoon’s face scrunched up and turned to Heeseung. “Aren’t you offended?” Heeseung, the boyfriend of Sunoo, simply shook his head. “Nope. I like him too.”
Jake gave Sunghoon a proud smile. “Hah.”
Now, Jake isn’t completely friendless - neither is Niki. He knows he makes himself sound all lonely but it’s not truly the case.
Jake has friends he’s made from YouTube and Niki has friends he’s made from dance, but they both use the term friend loosely.
They hang out often enough and share good memories with other people, but they both lack big support systems.
Jay suddenly stood up. “I'm hungry, Jake come help me cook dinner.” Most of them looked at Jay puzzled while Sunghoon gently moved Jake off his shoulder to stand up. “No it’s okay, Jake stay here I’ll go help Jay.”
Jay clicked his tongue. “Nope. I want to have some bestfriend’s boyfriend bonding time.” Jake let out an amused breath but he just glared. “Never say that again.”
Jay just shrugged, montioning Jake off the couch. “Let’s go Jakey.”
—————
Jay had just finished chopping up some vegetables while Jake was stirring the sauce.
“Hey.” Jake startled slightly. “Hey?” For some reason Jay decided to slip right beside him. He gave him a confused look but Jay just ignored it. “Are you having fun?”
He nodded, puzzled at the sudden use of English. “Yeah, you guys are very entertaining.” He let out a small chuckle but Jay’s face stayed blank.
Jake blinked at him, now slightly uncomfortable. “I’m going to get to the point.” Jay moved himself to face Jake directly. “You seem very genuine and I’m glad.”
Jake gave him a small smile and Jay continued. “You’ve probably already realized this but Sunghoon might look all tough but he is genuinely just a baby. He likes to act all cool when in reality he needs just as much comfort as the rest of us.”
Jay was right. Sunghoon is perfectly capable of getting all sulky or clingy, he’s experienced it first hand.
“He’s not very vocal about his feelings, so you need to know when to step back and let him figure it out. He’ll tell you eventually if you let him process it.” This was something that Jay had learned early on in their friendship. While he was someone who always wanted to talk problems out and solve things quickly, Sunghoon was quite the opposite. He wasn’t passive per say, he was simply just more reserved. “Sometimes it is frustrating because all you want to do is help him, but in the long run just giving him support without endless questioning helps him the most.”
Jay patted Jake's shoulder. “He picked a good guy.”
The smile that Jay was wearing suddenly went cold. “But just because I like you doesn’t mean I wouldn't defend Sunghoon to the death. Me and Heeseung are hockey players, I don’t think you want to mess with us.” Jays award winning smile went back on his face as he turned to the living room. “Time to eat everyone!”

Sunghoon didn’t know why he got out of the car to say bye to Jake. “I hope they didn't make you uncomfortable.”
The two were beside the car, in front of Jakes apartment building. “They didn't, don’t worry.” Their joint hands were swinging. Their holding hands agenda started in Jungwon’s apartment and they both can’t find it in them to stop. They’re out of earshot and Sunghoons friends are definitely fooled so technically there is no reason to be doing this. The two obviously didn't care enough to question it.
“They seem like they care about you a lot, it’s really sweet.” Sunghoon looked away with a slight blush on his cheeks, eventually looking back and locking eyes with Jake.
Sunghoon never realized how bright Jake's eyes were. It seemed like the energy he always carried around with him was also present in his eyes. They were soft yet enticing. There was always that little spark of mischief within his soft hearted nature. To say it simply, his eyes were gorgeous.
“I’ll, um,” He had to get it together, he was literally the one who initiated this. “I’ll see you next week right?” Niki had a dance competition with his team and was unable to film the video. Sunghoon did volunteer to help but Jake was going to make him help anyway. “I feel like you’ll be at my house before then.” Jake gave him a knowing look and Sunghoons gaze fell. “Shut up.”
Jakes chuckled. “I’m gonna go, tell your friends I said thank you.” He gave Sunghoon a soft smile.
Before Sunghoon could even process anything, he caught Jake's hand, pulling him into his chest.
Jake froze making Sunghoon freeze too. What did he just do? He really has to get his impulses under control.
Almost like Jake could hear the whirlwind of doubts in his head, he gradually moved his arms up to wrap his arms around Sunghoons shoulders.
They were relatively the same height but that didn’t stop Jake from guiding Sunghoon’s head into the crook of his neck.
He squeezed Jake tighter and let himself relax. Jake was so warm and his heart was beating so fast.
He could say that these feelings were from him being down bad for Jake (that was definitely a big factor), but he also felt like Jake was just a comforting person in general.
Jake felt the same way about Sunghoon.
Reluctantly, they separated from each other, hands still intertwined. “You give really good hugs.” Jake giggled and a hand slapped over Sunghoons mouth in disbelief. That thought was absolutely supposed to stay in his head. “I give good hugs when I’m hugging people I care about.”
There was something there. They both felt the tension, the invisible string that was starting to tie them together . But they ignored it. Deep down they knew the feelings of the other person and was happy with what their relationship was at now.
Did Sunghoon want to lay in bed under the covers and never let go of Jake? Yes. Did Jake want to kiss the living daylights out of Sunghoon? Absolutely. But that could wait, they were both willing to wait.
With a breath, Jake's hands slowly slipped away as he took a step back from Sunghoon. “Next time you come visit, bring me coffee.”
Sunghoon only nodded, still kinda starstruck as Jake waved practically running up to his apartment.
You better believe that Niki had to hear about this one hug for hours.
Chapter 6: bruised

Sorry it’s been a little while… here’s a long chapter to make up for it <33

Chapter Text
“Finally you’re here.” Sunghoon moved with a slight groan, slowly getting up. “Let’s go.” He started walking, well it was more like waddling, towards the entrance of the apartment building.
There was a slight limp in his step and Jake saw how his face lightly contorted when he put weight on his right leg.
Jake looked at him confused. “Are you okay?”
Sunghoon just nodded. “Ya I’m- ah fuck.” His hands flew to his side as he tried to turn to Jake to talk.
“What’s wrong?”
Sunghoons face scrunched in what looked like pain, eventually letting out a breath and releasing his side. “I had a fall at practice today so I think a bruise is forming. It’s fine though, it’s probably small.” He gave Jake a fleeting smile, slowly turning back to walk again.
Jake didn’t believe him at all. He knew he wasn’t going to get Sunghoon to admit anything was wrong so he resorted to simply poking him in his side, hard.
The noise Sunghoon made was loud, Jake was glad there weren’t many people in the lobby.
Sunghoon was now slightly hunched over, clutching his hip. He raised his head to glare at Jake. “Jake what the fuck!” Before he could respond, Sunghoon’s head fell back down, eyes squeezed shut.
He usually would’ve found joy in Sunghoons agony, but this seemed bad, like really bad.
After spending time with Sunghoon, Jake quickly realized that he doesn’t like getting help. He tends to keep his problems to himself, not expressing any troubles he’s having. Now, Jake is not asking him to spill all his life secrets, he just wonders why Sunghoon always tries to not show weakness.
So, seeing Sunghoon unable to hide his pain like this tells him enough. “Let’s go back upstairs.”
“What, why? I’m fine.”
“No you’re not.” Jake gave his face a scan. “You look like you’re about to cry.”
Sunghoon gasped in offense, standing up ready to reprehend Jake. That action was quickly regretted as another wave of pain went through his side.
Jake shook his head. “Told you.” He reached for Sunghoons arm, placing it over his shoulder to help him walk instead of limp.
Sunghoon had tried to protest but Jake gave him a look and he shut up.
It took them a while to get back up to Jake's apartment, but they made it up there.
He guided Sunghoon to the couch, going to get a cream from his bathroom. He hastily made his way back to the couch, just to see Sunghoon trying to stand up. “What are you doing you fool, sit down.”
“Jake I’m fine I swear.”
“Park Sunghoon, sit down now.” Sunghoon froze before letting out a huff, muttering curses at him. Jake chose to ignore it as he went and sat down beside him.
He took the cap off the top of the bottle. “Take your shirt off.”
Sunghoon scoffed. “If you wanted me naked you should have just told me.” The glare Jake gave him was enough to shut him up.
Sunghoon slowly peeled his shirt over his head and Jake tried his absolute hardest not to look, but it was quite hard not to stare at his toned chest.
But once his gaze focused on the bruise his fantasies and face instantly fell. “Hoon… how did this happen?” The mark went from the top of his rib cage and along his hip. This didn’t look like something that was a result of one practice today.
“I’m learning this new turn and it’s really hard.” Sunghoon refused to look at Jake. “When I fall I keep landing on my right side because of the way I’m turning. I guess the bruise got worse because I kept falling on it.”
His voice was quiet, almost like he was embarrassed that he was admitting this. “And my coach keeps making me do this specific exercise to help me turn and I have to lie on my side to do it.” Jake honestly wanted to curse his coach out. He understood that Sunghoon had to train and practice, but couldn’t his coach put off this new move until he wasn't battered and bruised?
“Well, your coach is stupid.” Sunghoon let out a small laugh at that. “I’m starting to think that.”
Jake silently shook his head as he moved closer to Sunghoon on the couch. “I’m sorry,” Jake put some of the cream on his fingers. “This is gonna hurt a lot.”
The second he put pressure on the bruise Sunghoons hands flew up to his wrists in alarm. Jake glanced up to see a pained but worried expression on Sunghoons face.
“I have to put this on.”
Sunghoon quickly shook his head, still not letting go of Jake's wrists. “No you don’t. I’ve lasted this long with the huge bruise so I can last even longer.”
That wasn’t true and Sunghoon knew that. Jake looked at him with sincere eyes. “Sunghoon please, I’ll be as gentle as I can.”
His head shook and Jake sighed. “We can do whatever you want after.” It looked like Sunghoon started contemplating something in his head and Jake gave him the time he needed.
“Can we um,” Sunghoon cleared his throat, playing with his hands. Jake was curious as he never showed this level of shyness with him. “Can we watch a movie and cuddle?” Jake's heart swelled in his chest. When did Sunghoon get so cute? “I’m okay with that, I’ll even let you pick the movie.”
He made himself more comfortable as he put his hand out for Sunghoon to grab. “Squeeze my hand while I do it. I’ll be quick.”
Jake put his fingers on Sunghoons side and he immediately hissed and gripped Jake's hand like his life depended on it.
“I’m sorry baby, I'm almost done.” The name slipped out but Sunghoon was too blinded by pain to notice anything and Jake was too focused on going quickly because it was obvious that Sunghoon was in pain and that was something he hated.
Sunghoon was cutting the circulation off in his hand but he didn’t say anything, knowing he needed the comfort.
Jake wasn’t necessarily satisfied by how he applied the cream but he had to stop before Sunghoon passed out. “I'm done.” Sunghoon let go of Jake's hands and threw his head back in relief. “Oh thank god.”
Jake put the top back on the bruise cream and glanced at Sunghoon. “A bruise should not hurt this much, are u sure it’s not fractured or something?”
“Eh, probably not.” That was Sunghoon language for yes. Jake almost started nagging at him to go see a doctor, but he knew he was pushing his luck already so he stayed quiet.
“Pick a movie while I go put this back.” Sunghoon nodded and Jake turned around towards the bathroom. Then he stopped in his tracks, hesitatingly turning around. “Actually…” This might be weird but Jake felt like he had to suggest it, he honestly wanted to suggest it. “We can go in my room if you want.”
Sunghoons eyes widened.
“There’s a tv in there and my bed is very comfortable.” He was shifting his weight nervously as Sunghoon nodded slightly, slowly getting up. “Okay.”
It was quiet for a moment before Jake snapped out of whatever trance he was in. “Okay! Okay.” He turned. “Follow me.”
After Sunghoon trecked his way into Jake's room he pulled out a pair of sweatpants. “It looked like your jeans were making you uncomfortable. Change it into this while I go to the bathroom.” Before Sunghoon could even say thank you Jake turned on his heels, face burning.
Once Jake composed himself, he walked into his room to see Sunghoon leaning on the headboard of the bed, remote in hand.
“You… my hoodie?” Sunghoon quickly looked down at what he was wearing.
“Oh uh-” His face reddened as he cleared his throat. “I was cold. I hope this is okay.” Jake nodded, perhaps too eagerly. “No it’s okay! You look good.”
Sunghoon's face scrunched up. “I’m in sweats and feel like shit, how do I look good right now?”
There was no way Jake was going to admit that he liked seeing Sunghoon in his clothes. “Um,” He looked around before making his way over to the other side of the bed, planning on disregarding the question entirely. “What movie are we watching?”
“I was thinking a Disney one?” Jake nodded, he knew Sunghoon loved these movies and he didn’t want to object.
The two moved together on the bed, almost subconsciously. They were sitting up against the headboard of the bed, Sunghoon leaning on Jake with his non-injured side.
His arm made its way around Sunghoon, pulling him closer.
Jake had always loved the way Sunghoon smelled. Yes, he admits it’s kind of creepy, but he’s just being true to himself. Sunghoon smelled almost citrusy with small hints of sweetness. It made Jake very comfortable.
They continued the movie, it now being halfway done.
Sunghoon was quiet and it started to worry Jake.
Now, Sunghoon wasn’t the most talkative person on the planet. To be honest Jake spent most of his time talking and Sunghoon just listened, but this quiet was different. At the start he chalked it up to him being in pain, but now Sunghoon looked distant, almost distracted?
All this made it almost impossible for him to focus on the movie.
After racking his brain for possible answers, he decided to just ask Sunghoon directly. “Is something else bothering you?”
The way that Sunghoon’s head snapped towards Jake with an anxious expression told him all he needed to know. “We can talk about it.”
“No.” He carefully readjusted his arm. “It’s stupid.”
His head shook. “Feelings aren’t stupid hoon.”
As much as Sunghoon wanted to avoid this topic, deep down he knew he had to get it out. It was starting to drive him crazy. “I’m just really really worried.” Sunghoons hands started to play with the hem of Jake's shirt.
“Worried about what?”
Sunghoon started balling his fists and Jake noticed Immediately. He took one of Sunghoons hands in his own which seemed to calm him down. “I’m worried about not being able to do this turn.”
Jake's eyebrows furrowed. “With practice you’ll be able to do it, you’re an amazing skater.”
Sunghoon merely shook his head in disagreement. “I don’t think you understand, I’ve never not been able to do something in figure skating.”
Most would call him a prodigy. From the moment he stepped foot on the ice, coaches knew that he was going to become something. “This makes me sound so egotistical but it’s true. It’s taken time to get other hard tricks but it’s never taken this long.”
Hard things take time and he knew that. But there was something about this jump that brought him so much anxiety.
At this point it started to make him dread going to practice. Between the frustration at not being able to do the jump and the pain that he was in, he didn’t feel like it was worth it.
There was obviously no way he was going to quit, he still loved figure skating, but he’s never felt like this. Skating was the one thing that would always help him relieve stress, but now it was what was causing it.
“I just,” he let out a defeated sigh. “I don’t want to let anyone down.”
Like said before, people called him a prodigy. When he was young he loved the title. The attention and praise he got pushed him to go further. However, that drive he got from the title turned into pressure. People put so much faith in him that it was starting to weigh him down.
“I love skating so much, it’s genuinely my life.” It has been for years and it was always going to be. “But not being able to do something you're usually really good at is a complete shot to your confidence.”
Jake was silent for a moment, he wanted to take the time to say the right thing. “I understand where you’re coming from, but I think you need to see it from my point of view.”
Sunghoon was stubborn, especially when it involved something he was dead set on. It seemed like this thought process had gone on long enough to create a permanent spot in his brain. Jake knew this was the best and probably only way to get through to him.
“You are such a hardworking and dedicated person.” By being friends(???) with Sunghoon for so long, Jake has seen how much he honors what he does. “I’ve seen the blood sweat and tears you put into bettering your skating and it is so admirable.” Apparently his bones are included in his sacrifice. Jake still isn’t letting this incident go; they're going to talk about it eventually.
“And hoon you fly on the ice. You looked so utterly beautiful on the rink when I went to pick you up from practice.” Even though Jake had only seen a little part of the end of what he was practicing on, Jake had silently made it his mission to watch him every time he competes. He’s coming to Sunghoons next competition whether he likes it or not.
“People see you for your accomplishments and talent, they don’t see you for the small mistake you make in your routine or a turn you can’t do.” He squeezed Sunghoon’s hands. “Even the most talented people have limits, that’s just something you have to accept.”
Sunghoon looked like he was thinking.
What Jake said seemed to have at least some impact as Sunghoon’s shoulders eased up slightly, but a frown still etched into his face. “But my coach-”
“Fuck your coach, he’s an asshole.” Jake had never met the man but he already hates him.
Sunghoon let out a small, breathy laugh and Jake beamed. “Your laugh is cute.”
Sunghoon mumbled a small shut up, ironically snuggling closer to Jake.
“You look tired, take a rest.” The arm that was around Sunghoons shoulder moved to his hair, gently caressing it as he fell asleep.
—————
Jake had thankfully got away from him after he fell asleep. He promised his viewers he’d do a stream.
“Due to um… unforeseen circumstances, the video this week will be postponed.” A flood of sad comments and questions filled the chat making Jake chuckle. “It’s not the end of the world I swear, I’ll have another video out soon. I’ll even do an extra live stream to make up for it.”
jklmnop?78: but the event is next week!!
jakery123: yeah are u gonna be okay for that?
His viewers were talking about what was essentially the Korean version of vidcon. He was invited to go and be a part of it, getting the opportunity to do a small meet and greet.
“You guys I swear I’m fine, I was planning on filming the video today but something else came up and I want to focus my attention on that.”
ilyiwysm: aww it's probably his boyfriend
shanpbin_110: what a good boyfriend you are
Jake raised his eyebrows slightly amused. “And how are you guys so sure it’s because of my boyfriend? Are you sure I even have a boyfriend?”
The comments and him starting debating. This whole thing was much more fun then he anticipated.
It actually seemed like he started to fool his viewers until the door opened and a tired, wobbly Sunghoon peaked in. “Yunnie come back to bed, I was so comfortable.” Jake didn’t even try to stop the love struck look on his face. “5 minutes and I’ll come.” He gave Jake a tired nod, shutting the door behind him. Jake watched him leave with a fond smile, eventually turning his gaze back to his viewers. “Well, you guys heard it, I’ve been summoned.”
Jake laughed at the complaints from the chat. He shrugged. “What my boyfriend wants, my boyfriend gets.”
He gave the camera a wink, leaving all his fans to collectively lose their shit.
Jake walked back into his room with a stupid grin on his face.
“What’s got you all smiley?” Sunghoon had taken a place under the covers, lying on his back, probably to avoid his hurting side. “I told the chat I had a boyfriend.”
Without thinking Jake slipped under the covers.
“Oh really?” Sunghoon moved over slightly to place his head on Jake's chest. Jake's arm went to his waist. “I expect my Twitter will be blowing up for the next little while.” Sunghoon simply nodded. “Now go to sleep you whiny baby, you’re the one who called me in here.”
Somehow Sunghoon moved closer to Jake. “Don’t act like you’re not enjoying this.” His voice was muffled as Sunghoon’s head was buried in Jake's shoulder.
But Jake heard him loud and clear. “Don’t make me poke your side again.” His finger hovered over Sunghoon and he glowers up at Jake. “I will kill you.”
Jake nods, placing his hand gently back on Sunghoon’s waist. “Mhm, I’m sure you will.”
It was weird. Sunghoon was confused as to why he was so comfortable. Of course his side still hurt, I mean there’s a huge bruise there, but now it feels like it’s at least a little less sore.
Jake always had this comforting aura. He was fun and loving but always made you feel comfortable and welcomed.
Maybe this was because Jake was comforting in nature, but Sunghoon couldn’t deny that being this close to Jake, legs entangled, was the reason as to why he was hurting less.
—————
“What is this convention thing I have to go to? All your fans are saying I’ll be there with you.” Sunghoon was scrolling through Twitter as he watched Jake make blueberry pancakes for dinner, per his request.
“I got invited to co-host a part of the event.” Jake was shocked when he got an email from the office account that was organizing the event. “I’m hosting with Hanni.” He’s filmed with her a couple times. They make videos in English as they’re both Australian. “Who am I kidding you probably don’t know who she is.”
Sunghoon shook his head, obviously clueless. “Yup no idea, but that’s really cool.”
Jake flipped the last pancake. “It’s gonna be great, they rented hotel rooms for everyone and everything.” The event was taking place where Jake was, but since so many people were coming in from different parts of Korea the organizers decided to rent rooms for the important people. Jake had let them know that he didn’t need a room but they insisted. “They offered to get one for me and it’s a 5 star hotel, no way I’m fighting that.”
Jake was really excited. The part he was hosting was the q&a part followed by the fan meet including him and many other creators. Him and Hanni were meeting up quite a lot to plan. They both agreed that they wanted it to be amazing.
Suddenly Sunghoon’s eyes squinted as he put his phone down. “Is she the one you’ve been hanging out with all the time?” The pout on Sunghoons lips made Jake chuckle. “Yes she is.”
Because they were practicing so much Jake was out of the house a lot more. They tended to go out to plan, both agreeing that they didn’t want to stay cooped up in their respective apartments all day.
She was taking up a lot of his time and he could tell that Sunghoon didn’t like that. “You know you can’t keep me all for yourself right?”
Jake turned the stove off, finally done with the pancakes. He took them and went to sit across from Sunghoon at the table.
Once he sat down Sunghoon clicked his tongue. “She’s been taking up a lot of my Jake time recently.” He wasn’t even trying to hide the bitterness in his voice and Jake found it adorable. “Your Jake time? When did I become your Jake?”
Jake was too busy focusing on cutting his food to see the sincere gaze directed at him. “You’ve felt like mine for a long time.” Jake stalled and looked at Sunghoon. “Huh?”
Sunghoon adjusted his posture, wanting to look genuine. They both joke around alot so he wants Jake to know that he is being honest. “Maybe this is all in my head Jake so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think we both know this whole thing isn’t a joke anymore.”
Sunghoon was trying to maintain eye contact but he was starting to get clammy, realizing that this was much harder than he thought. This is why he needs to learn to think things through.
“I’ve been really happy these past couple months because youmake me really happy Jaeyun. I mean this from the bottom of my heart.” He also didn’t want to look at Jake directly in fear of seeing his facial expressions. You could always tell what Jake was feeling and he really wanted to finish what he was saying before potentially getting rejected. “I really like talking with you and having our stupid bickering contests. I like listening to you talk about your day even if it’s just about you sitting down for hours on end. I really like hugging you and being able to listen to your heartbeat when we’re lying together.”
He could go on for days about the things he liked about Jake, but he wanted to get this done before he passed out of nervousness. “You’re an amazing person Jake and I hope you know that.”
Somehow, he found the courage to look at Jake. “I know this is sudden but I wanted to say it, I had to say it.” He regretted his words immediately. Seeing Jake's furrowed eyebrows and guarded expression shattered whatever confidence he had in his body.
Jake scanned Sunghoon’s face. It held so much vulnerability and sincerity that he almost started crying. “I um,” He shook his head slightly, he couldn’t do this. “I have to go to the bathroom.” Jake turned on his heels, not seeing the light practically drain out of Sunghoons eyes.
Jake rushed into the bathroom, closed the door, and immediately pulled out his phone.
jake
niki I need help
niki
no
jake
actually
for real
I’m slightly kinda mildly freaking out right now
niki

The answer seemed uninterested but Jake knew he actually cared.
jake

niki
you like him right?
why isn’t that good
jake
you know why
niki
oh
oh yeah
Jake didn’t want to give his whole sob story but his last relationship didn’t need particularly well. It ended quite terribly actually. That was obvious by the way he was acting right now. Jake didn’t even want to think about all the water he must’ve lost because of the days of crying.
niki
I genuinely think he’s a great guy
Niki hadn’t met Sunghoon a lot. Sure they had brief conversations when they saw each other at Jake's house, but one of them was always leaving as the other was coming in.
However, Jake talked about Sunghoon, god did he talk about Sunghoon. Niki felt like he had read the whole Sunghoon encyclopedia front to back twice. Regardless of his complaining, he felt like he knew Sunghoon, meaning he also began to trust the guy.
jake
wow
I’ve never thought a compliment like that was ever going to be directed at anyone other than taki
niki
shut up and let me finish
i'm trying to comfort you
jake
sorry sorry
niki

let’s see how long I can hold in my extreme sadness
Jake walked out to see Sunghoon standing at the door with an apologetic look on his face. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.” He gave Jake a tight lipped smile. “Let me know when you need me next, have a nice day.”
Sunghoon turned towards the door and Jake snapped out of whatever state of shock he was in, running up and turning Sunghoon back around. “What? Oh my god, you didn’t make me uncomfortable.” Jake was frazzled, slightly stumbling over his words. “You didn’t make me uncomfortable at all I was just- I didn’t expect this right now.”
Sunghoon did smile but it didn’t reach his eyes. “I’m glad I didn’t make you uncomfortable, but I hope my stupid feelings don’t ruin the friendship we have.” Jake's eyebrows furrowed. What was he talking about? “Don’t feel pressured to return my feelings. It would actually be better if you just forgot that I-”
“What?” Jake dropped Sunghoon’s hands. “You absolute idiot.”
Sunghoon drew in a breath. “Okay wow, I’m really trying not to cry here and you're making it worse.” Jake ignored him and continued. “I like you too! I like you so much I’m starting to think it’s unhealthy.”
A look of hope flashed in Sunghoon’s eyes before he shook his head. “Jake, you don’t have to say yes just to make me-” Jake's lips lightly met his in hopes of shutting him up, it definitely worked as Sunghoon was now rendered speechless. “Does that prove my point?”
Sunghoon nodded dumbly. Jake has never seen a bigger smile on his face. “You have a dimple, did you know that?” Jake grabbed Sunghoons hand, intertwining them together.
Sunghoons eyes shifted between Jake's own, Jake sporting the same smiley look. They both knew now that they could stare without the fear of being caught.
Sunghoon could finally look at the sparkle in Jake's eyes whenever he was excited. Jake could watch Sunghoon’s whole face scrunches when he laughs while his dimples appear.
They were both basking in each other's attention before Jake's smile slightly fell. “But hoon,” The man hummed, listening attentively to what Jake had to say. “Don’t get me wrong, I really like you and do honestly trust you,” Sunghoons stomach felt like it was about to drop to his feet. This was definitely going to be followed by ‘but’, and when a sentence starts with but it's never well. “But could we take this slow? My last relationship has left me a bit cautious.”
He let out a sigh of relief. “Oh thank god. I thought it was going to be something bad.” The look of relief quickly vanished as his free hand started waving in front of him. “Not that your last relationship was a good thing! Cause it obviously wasn’t, people can be real assholes someti-”
Once again, Jake leaned in and placed a short kiss on Sunghoons lips.
Jake backed away with a small smirk. “I’m really liking this new way of shutting you up.”
Sunghoons raised his eyebrows, responding back in the exact same teasing tone. “Maybe I should talk more so you have a reason to shut me up.”
He pulled Sunghoon inches away from him, his arms going over Sunghoons shoulders, voice almost breathless. “Oh trust me, I'm gonna kiss your beautiful face whenever I want.”
Sunghoon let out a breath and Jake felt it against his lips. “Well be my guest, my love.” And their lips clashed together once again. But this one wasn’t a peck, this was a kiss. The type of kiss that had Jake grasping onto the back of Sunghoons hair and made Sunghoon’s grip on his hips tighten.
This was long overdue and they both felt that. They could feel the desperation from the way they held each other impossibly close, almost afraid that one of them was going to slip away.
Though they could also feel the love. Jake's lips were soft and he felt like he was floating. He felt like he was being consumed by the warmth in his chest and dizzying feeling going on in his head.
They both needed air and had to stop this before it got out of hand.
Very reluctantly, Sunghoon pulled away from the kiss. They were completely breathless from the lack of air and sheer intensity of emotions that were involved in this kiss.
Before Jake could move in once again, Sunghoon spoke up. “As much as I love kissing you, I’ve been standing for too long and my side is starting to hurt again.”
Realization washed over Jake's features as he looked at his side. “Oh my god I forgot!” He lightly grabbed Sunghoon’s hand to lead him back to his room. “Let’s go lie down again.”
Sunghoon didn’t protest at all. He was never going to deny hugs from his amazing Jake.

ENHA COMEBACK TMR HOLY SHIT
If you guys don’t hear from me again you’ll know why
Chapter 7: whatever i want
Chapter Text
Jake was sitting on the metal bench with his head in his hands, stressed. Why was he stressed? It was none other than Sunghoon and his stupid ideas.
“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Sunghoon chuckled, bending down with Jakes skates in his hands. “You’ll be fine.”
Jake only let out a puff of air, crossing his arms. “Yeah okay, say that to me after I break a leg on the ice.” Sunghoon’s head shook as he skillfully tied the laces of Jake's shoes. Jake would’ve been more impressed if it weren’t for the fact that he was about to bolt out of the skating rink.
“You are so lucky I care about you, I wouldn’t be caught dead doing this for anyone else.” Somehow, the only way Sunghoon would take a small break from ice skating was if Jake learned how to skate.
As he was getting led to the rink, Jake was solemnly replaying the conversation that led them to here in the first place
—
They were back in Jake's bed, legs tangled up, both changed into pajamas (Jakes pajamas - Sunghoon had other clothes but had insisted he wanted to wear Jakes, he said they smelt good?).
The last thing Jake wanted to do was break the comfortable atmosphere they created, but this had to be said. “You need to take a break from skating.” Sunghoon straight out refused, answering without missing a beat. “Absolutely not.”
Jake sighed, he knew this was gonna be hard. “Listen, I don't want to be known as the controlling boyfriend, but you cannot go back to practice tomorrow”
Sunghoon looked up at Jake with a teasing smile. “You called yourself my boyfriend.” Jake glared. “Sorry, please continue.”
Jakes hand was gently caressing Sunghoons lower back in hopes of easing the inevitable tension brought from this conversation. “I don't think you understand Sunghoon, if you don't take a rest, your side will get worse. It will eventually get so bad that you won’t be able to skate at all. Do you want that?” He shook his head. “I know skating is everything to you and I know the last thing you want to do is take a break, but you know, whether you want to admit it or not, that this will get very bad and really hurt your future.”
Sunghoon looked hesitant and Jake couldn’t figure out why. Annoyed? That made sense, Jakes persistently asking him to take a break from his favourite thing. Sad? Makes even more sense because he’s realizing that he has to stop for a little bit even though it hurts his heart. But hesitant? Jake didn’t know. “You’re thinking, what are you thinking about?”
Sunghoon wanted to tell him, he really wanted to tell him, but he couldn’t. There was no way he could tell him.
Jake seemed to take note of the inner turmoil going on in Sunghoon’s brain. He contemplated pushing for an answer, but it looked like Sunghoon would rather jump off a cliff than tell him what was going on.
Jake slowly sat up, ultimately bringing Sunghoon up with him. “I'm going to take a shower, you stay here and think okay?” Sughoon moved his head in agreement as Jake gave his forehead a kiss, making his way to the bathroom.
Once the door shut, Sunghoon sank back down in to the covers. He honestly wanted to cry. Firstly because his side hurts like a bitch meaning he’ll have to take a break, but secondly the sadness came from somewhere else, it was more like stress.
He knew he could trust Jake but this was something that had to wait. Jake was curious and Sunghoon saw that, but Jake knew how Sunghoon functioned and silence was one of his tools.
Sunghoon had no idea why but he felt tears prick at his eyes. Maybe it was the disappointment at himself for getting hurt. Maybe it was his frustration with himself for finding it so hard to open up. Maybe it was the throbbing pain and complete exhaustion creeping up on him. Regardless, he shed a couple tears while Jake was in the shower.
Once Jake came back and slipped under the covers, he didn’t say anything, but Sunghoon could tell by the way Jake immediately pulled him close, that he knew he had cried.
Sunghoon then realized how much he loved Jake. He was thankful that Jake was understanding and gave him time to think.
And even though he wanted nothing more than to completely vanish, Jakes presence made his terrible feelings subside just a little.
—
As soon as Jake stepped on the ice, he wanted to leave. “I'm going to die. I'm gonna slip and my head is going to crack open.” The death grip that he had on Sunghoon’s forearms was laughable. “You’re okay, I’ve got you.”
The scene was actually quite comical. Jake was decked out in knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet practically encasing his whole head with a puffy jacket and gloves while Sunghoon was in a thin jacket, sweatpants, and his figure skates.
“We’re going to try moving forward okay?” Jake quickly shook his head but Sunghoon ignored it. “I’ll go slow.”
Everything in Jake wanted to simply stay still, but he promised Sunghoon he’d try even if it meant making a fool out of himself.
Sunghoon slowly started moving back, Jake following. “See? You’re doing great.”
It looked like he was going to let go and Jake panicked, grabbing on tighter to his boyfriend.
Sunghoon’s years of teaching little kids how to skate apparently helped him prepare for having a grown man holding on to him for dear life. “Yunnie, please relax. I’m not going anywhere.”
Since the two confessed, Sunghoon had taken a liking to calling him anything but Jake. The first time Sunghoon called him my love, he genuinely almost melted into the floor.
By some miracle, Jake was still in awe, he was skating by himself by the end of their time at the rink. He still made Sunghoon stay within a two foot radius of him, but the important thing was that he was doing it by himself.
They were out of the rink, slowly walking hand in hand to Sunghoons car.
“I’m glad we did this.” Sunghoons head turned to Jake, confused at the sudden sentimental tone. “Huh?”
“I saw you watching the other skaters you know. I know how much you miss being here.” Sunghoon pursed his lips, was he really that transparent? “Coming here was good, even if I thought I was going to die.”
Sunghoon simply chuckled. “As much as I didn’t want to take a break, I knew I had to, I just needed a little push. Thank you for that.”
Jake stopped beside the car, gently grabbing Sunhoons face. “No, thank you for opening up to me and taking my advice. The last thing I wanted was to see you in even more pain.”
As Sunghoon placed soft hands on Jake's hips, Jake leaned in and placed a careful kiss on his lips. They’ve only kissed a handful of times but Sunghoon has determined that the feeling was something he now couldn’t live without.
They both slowly backed away, relishing in the comforting atmosphere they created.
They gazed at each other before Sunghoon stepped away with a flaming face. “Ugh I hate being all sentimental, get in the car.” Sunghoon huffed while Jake laughed at his red face. Riling Sunghoon up had become his new favourite pastime.

After meeting up at the hotel and exchanging greetings, they made their way to the convention.
Jake had gotten them all vip passes, heeseung and Jay were particularly happy as they both loved games.
“Roam around all you want, if you want to come see my part of the event it starts at four at the east side.”
Somehow Niki ended up going with Sunoo, the two weirdly clicked even if their relationship was mostly insults and subtle jabs at each other.
—————
Around three thirty Jake was called to go prepare for his part of the event. Sunghoon had offered to go with him, but Jake declined saying it was going to be boring, and to go find the others.
Sunghoon gave him a quick hug and good luck, before walking away, admiring more of the convention.
Sunghoon was stupid. He got lost. As embarrassing as it was, he had to swallow his pride and ask a group of highschoolers where to go. He didn’t want to miss Jake's event that he had been preparing so hard for.
He rushed over, noticing that he was only a couple minutes late. To his understanding, the creators were doing a little meet and greet, following it with a big question and answer period and small little games. Jake had thoroughly explained it to him but he just nodded and pretended he understood.
As he walks in, he looks closer and realizes that Jake is wearing faint eyeliner, his lips looking rosier than usual. It wasn’t completely visible to the naked eye, but if you stare at him every day you’ll notice small differences. Realizing that Hanni must’ve done it, he made a mental note to thank her.
The group was sitting near the front, Sunghoon had no idea how they got up there. He was making his way over to them when he heard some voices of a couple girls sitting down. They were talking in a hushed whisper but Sunghoon stopped beside them, subtly of course.
“Jake looks so good today.” The black haired girl nodded. “Ugh I know.” That was something Sunghoon could agree with, he had to get Jake to wear makeup more often.
“Do you think his boyfriend is actually real?” Her friend hit her playfully but was in agreement with her. “Honestly I’m starting to think it’s fake. Plus, he’s been hanging out with Hanni a lot lately, maybe he said it was a guy to throw us off?”
The shorter girl shrugged. “Regardless, the man is hot. Do you think I could go get his number?” Sunghoon felt his eye twitch slightly. “Oh my god go try, he won’t be able to say no to you.” The friends giggled as Sunghoon threw silent daggers to the top of their heads. It seemed like everywhere he went today someone was complimenting his boyfriend. Don’t get him wrong he’s proud of Jake for being hot and successful, but come on. He doesn’t like to think of himself as possessive, but these comments were starting to piss him off.
Sunghoon closed his eyes, taking a deep breath in. He needed to calm down. Jake doesn’t know these girls and he is his boyfriend, no need to be jealous.
“He looks like he’s in love with the girl talking to him.” Sunhoon glanced up and his lips pursed, this wasn’t going to continue. It was almost embarrassing at how quickly his resolve faded.
Somehow Sunghoon managed to get into the line. (Some random girls let him in front of them in the line, telling him that he was so pretty - thank god for his good looks).
He was patiently waiting in line, listening to the conversations of other people. He eventually figured out that the first guy was named Mark and he played games and did music covers. There was also a guy named Yeonjun who was famous for street racing. That one confused Sunghoon, wasn’t that illegal?
He brushed off the fact, eyeing the 10 people lined up at a table like a kpop meet in greet. His eyes landed on Hanni and he gave a small smile. She was so sweet and Sunghoon felt bad for even being jealous because of her. She was genuinely one of the nicest peoples he’s met in a long time.
After faking conversations with 4 people and having a nice chat with Hanni, he finally made it to Jake's spot.
He slides over to Jake, Jake not lifting his head as he was signing something given to him. “Hello! What’s your- hoon?”
The confused face Jake made made him smile, responding in the same enthusiasm Jake first gave him. “Hello Jake, I'm such a big fan.” That sounded odd. He couldn’t remember the last time Sunghoon had simply called him Jake.
“What are you doing?”
Sunghoon shrugged. “Coming to meet my idol.”
Jake looked around before leaning in and lowering his voice. “How did you get up here?! You don’t even have a pass.” Jake was frustrated but Sunghoon just found it amusing. “I just used my sexy face to convince people to let me in line.” Jake looked at him unimpressed and Sunghoon put his hand up in defense. “Don’t look at me like that. It worked.”
Aparently they had gotten pretty close as a voice blared from the back of the room. “Don’t get that close to him!” Sunghoon turned around frustrated, locking eyes with the same girl who wanted to get Jakes phone number. Finally fed up with annoying fangirls he gave them all a spiteful glare. “He’s my boyfriend. I can do what I want.”
Jaws dropped and Sunghoon turned around with a smirk. “Bye love,” with Jake's face still close, he leaned in and placed a short kiss on his lips.
Jake tried to look at him with a glare but his flaming cheeks were making it hard to take him seriously. “Park Sunghoon.” His tone was hushed. “I’m going to kill you.”
Sunghoon ignored Jake's empty threat with his dimpled smile and a short wave.
He looked at the man beside Jake, the next person he was supposed to meet. “Sorry, no hard feelings, but I’m gonna jump off the stage now.” The guy just nodded, still stunned.
—————
Jake turned on the camera, awaiting for all his fans to join the live.
321123: um hello?? the stream title???
zb1_luver: IT’S FINALLY TIME
luvjake4ever: we’re finally getting to know the boyfriend
Jake chuckled at the excited and frantic messages in the chat. “Yup, we’re finally doing a meet my boyfriend video, or stream I guess.” Originally Jake was planning on filming a video, but Sunghoon insisted on doing it live as he wanted to answer questions.
“Let’s just wait a few minutes and then I’ll bring him in.”
Sunghoon was waiting at the door like a lost puppy, obviously excited to come in. “Baby, can I come in yet?” Jake groaned, Sunghoon apparently had other plans. “Come in.”
He gave Jake a quick smile, slowly walking over the new chair places right beside Jake.
Jake was appalled at the complete disaster that the chat had now become.
bananasalt: god obviously has his favorites
jakeily: jake I might have to steal him from you
karmabestsong: the silver hair is killing me
sunghoonily: would u mind sharing him with us?
“You guys stop complimenting him, his ego is already through the roof.” The reprimanding Didn't affect the chat in the slightest. “And no, I am not sharing my boyfriend!”
Jake glanced over at Sunghoon, who was unusually silent, to see the man have a dumb grin on his face. “He was very excited to do this, he likes attention.” As much as Jake would like to make fun of him, he can’t deny that seeing Sunghoon all happy with all the compliments doesn't make him happy too. “Anyway, introduce yourself boyfriend.”
It to a second before Sunghoon raised his head with a smile. “I’m Park Sunghoon, the amazing, fantastic, sexy, beautiful boyfriend of Sim Jaeyun.” He gave a seated bow and Jake just rolled his eyes, in annoyance and admiration. “Get used to that, he talks like that a lot.” Jake continued. “Now we can-”
“Answer questions!” Sunghoon clapped, leaving closer to the camera.
He was honestly so excited to be a part of this stream. As soon as Jake told him they were doing one he was practically jumping for joy. He attributed this excitement to being on camera, but he was also excited to see Jake in his element.
Yes, he regularly watched Jake's videos. He wanted to support his boyfriend and if that meant staring at his beautiful face on a screen for hours it didn’t affect him in the slightest.
During the live he couldn’t help but sneak subtle glances and fond smiles. He didn’t think Jake noticed but the viewers did judging by the hashtag #prkshdownbad. The hashtag was mildly embarrassing, but Sunghoon was just happy to be a trending hashtag.
Jake glanced at him, puzzled. “What? We were gonna-”
“Yunnie, please?” The eyes Sunghoon gave him made him cave, his willpower is so low when it comes to Sunghoon. “Okay fine, but stop staring at me like that.”
Sunghoon gave the camera a victorious smile, moving his eyes to the live comments.
hbdsunoo: story on the big relationship reveal??
“I was actually curious about this one. We hadn’t planned it, that’s why I was so caught off guard.”
Sunghoon’s previously confident attitude morphed into a small bashful smile. “Do I have to say it? It’s actually really embarrassing.” That only made the chat, and Jake, press more. “This is peer pressure, I can’t believe I'm admitting this.
So I was on my merry way, walking up to see my beautiful boyfriend perform,” Sunghoon could feel the tension back in his shoulders. “And I hear these girls chatting Jake up. They want to get his number and seduce him - I was not going to let that happen.” Jake snorted at the determined look on his face, Sunghoon was unintentionally so funny.
“So, I charmed my way into the line, oh by the way if the girls who let me in front of them are on here, contact me and I’ll buy you a coffee.” Sunghoon was being dead serious and it just made Jake shake his head, he was going to have to get his man some media training. “Anyway, the rest was history!”
jakery123: we love a polite but protective man
jklmnop?78: why is he so funny💀💀
“You guys should’ve heard the lecture I got when we got home. Apparently I embarrassed him, I don’t know what he’s talking about, I was simply showing my love.” He nodded at himself proudly and Jake's head fell into his hands, partly in embarrassment but also partly because of Sunghoons unfiltered story.
Before Jake could get a word in, Sunghoon thee his hands up in what everyone assumed was annoyance. “And, After the stunt I pulled, the security guard wouldn’t let me in the vip room! He saw me with Jake at the table and still denied my entry.” Jake just rolled his eyes as Sunghoon continued. “I asked what he wanted me to do? Like was the kiss not enough? I offered to go make out with Jake or something to prove it but-” A hit to Sunghoon’s forearm shut him up.
Jake glanced at the camera. “Sorry, he’s a bit of an idiot.” Sunghoon rubbed his arm, glaring at Jake. “That is no way to talk about your boyfriend.”
niri05: jake don’t even try to act mean
niri05: everyone jake so down bad for sunghoon that it’s embarrassing
Sunghoon laughed and Jake scowled. “Don't make me ban you again Niki.”
He gently grabbed Jakes hands. “If it’s any consolation, I’m very in love with you too.” They both momentarily forgot about the camera, allowing thousands of eyes to see them just being in love.
Jake broke away, slightly embarrassed, but started talking regardless. “Do you guys see this? He’s trying to charm me and fool all of you.” Sunghoon shrugged. “I don’t know what you're talking about.”
They answered some more questions before Jake saw the question he was looking for.
omgwow: how did you guys meet?
Jake's face lit up right as Sunghoons fell. “I’ve been waiting to talk about this. Sunghoon actually ran me over.”
Sunghoon straightening up in offense, contrasting to his previous lean on Jake. “I did not!”
Jake jabbed a finger at him. “Yes you did!”
Sunghoon shook his head in denial with his arms crossed and eyes closed. He did not care that he looked like a toddler. “You only got a concussion which was a direct result of you being stupid.” Sunghoon looked right at the camera, pointing a finger at Jake. “Did you guys know this idiot doesn’t look both ways before he crosses a road?”
“You shouldn’t be talking when you don’t know how to drive a damn car.”
“I drive you everywhere, do not make me take your car privileges away.” Jake let out a scandalized gasp. “Did you guys hear this? He’s threatening me!”
The next day compilations and threads were everywhere of Jake and Sunghoon on the live. Typically a title reading ‘boyfriend runs jake over’ and ‘idiot doesn’t obey traffic laws’ would be clickbait titles, but in Jake and Sunghoons case, unfortunately the titles made complete sense.
(Many fans also said they acted like an old married couple - it made no sense to the two but they were unbelievably happy to be labeled as such. They planned on staying together for a while anyway)
Notes:
and that’s it!!
I hope you guys loved it and enjoyed it, all of the comments honestly made my day
also don’t be fooled, there will be some extra parts of them just being cute - I can’t let go of the story this easily
I love you all!! <333
Chapter 8: i will always be here
Chapter Text
Jake was weaving through the crowd, trying to find Sunghoon.
He passed almost all the rooms in the hall, finding them empty or occupied with different skaters. Once he got to the last door which led outside, he sighed, turning around.
As he turned around he heard faint voices. He slowed down, furrowing his eyebrows as he turned back to look through the slight crack in the door leading outside. It looked like Sunghoon was talking to someone.
He smiled as he went closer to the door, about to push it open fully.
“What is wrong with you!” Jake stalled. “I still can’t believe you messed up the jump!”
“There was a hole in the ice that the person in front of me purposely made! He wanted me to fail because he knew I was a threat.”
The man, who Jake now assumed was his coach, let out a harsh breath. “That is no excuse, Sunghoon. I do not allow my students to fail.”
Sunghoon threw his hands up exasperated. “It wasn’t my fault! I’ve landed that jump almost every time I’ve done it for the past-”
“You can’t do anything right can you?” The man crossed his arms as Sunghoon took a small step back, seemingly intimidated.
“You’re ruining my reputation with your shitty skating.” Sunghoon visibly deflated. “You are a sorry excuse for a skater.” Jake's jaw dropped as Sunghoon just stood there.
Sunghoon’s eyes were fixated on the floor, hands clasped politely in front of him. “Coach i'm sorry.” The fight in Sunghoon’s voice was completely gone. Jake was confused, Sunghoon was far from non confrontational.
He quickly realized that this must happen often. There was no way Sunghoon would’ve backed down this quickly if it was the first time. Sunghoon was a fighter so this interaction was even more worrying.
“You obviously aren’t sorry enough.” The coach took a step forward, making Sunghoon take a shaky step back.
He raised his hand and Sunghoon shrunk away, immediately covering his face. The man mockingly laughed while lowering his hand. “Pathetic.” Sunghoons was paralyzed in his spot, the taunting stare keeping him in place. “Fix it.”
Sunghoon slowly stood up, shoulders still hunched. “Fix what?”
“Fix your goddamn attitude and horrible skating skills.”
His coach backed up, glare on him unrelenting. “Fucking ridiculous.” As Sunghoon was standing in the middle of the room, eyes glued to the floor, his coach said one last thing that made it feel like his world was falling apart. “I’m pulling you from the qualifier next month. Shitty skaters don’t deserve a shot at the olympics.”
Sunghoon’s eyes finally shot up as his jaw dropped. All he could do was stare at the door as his stomach fell to his feet.
His head was spinning and it felt as if he felt his knees start to buckle. He turned from the door trying to ground himself. He could feel the heat on his cheeks and the tears pricking his eyes.
At this point Jake had just watched the man storm out of the room and he was disgusted by the way he was treating Sunghoon.
How could someone talk to another person like that? Under no circumstances was he going to allow that asshole get away with it. And even though all he wanted to do was chase after that man and clock him right in the face, his boyfriend was 100 times more important.
He a breath and gently opened the door, making sure to close it right behind him.
“Hoon?” His back was still turned to Jake, unmoving. Jake had assumed he hadn’t heard him, so he took another step closer. “Sunghoon?”
Sunghoon took one look at his boyfriend with trembling lips and tears in his eyes. “Yunnie.” The words were barely muttered, voice filled with what only could be described as utter desperation.
Before Jake could even respond, Sunghoon came crashing into him, grasping on the back of his shirt.
As soon as Jake wrapped his arms back around Sunghoon, he started sobbing.
Sunghoon knew he was drenching Jake's shoulder, but he couldn’t do anything about it. His chest ached and his throat burned and all he could do was cry because it was the only thing that lessened the grueling pressure in his chest.
His shoulders shook a Jake took a hand to his hair, carefully running his fingers through it.
Jake tried to back up a bit to see his face, but the action only made Sunghoon hold on tighter. “I’m sorry,” He gave a light kiss to the side of Sunghoons head. “I’ve got you, I promise.” That only seemed to make Sunghoon cry harder as buried his head further into Jakes shoulder.
Sunghoon tried to stop crying, he really did. He tried to let go of Jake and wipe all the tears from his eyes. He tried to step back with a smile to go greet all the reporters inside. But the only thing he could think about was how his dream was ripped from right under him. How he will probably have to wait another 4 years to get an opportunity like this.
(The constant harassment from his coach was also probably getting to him but he refused to acknowledge any of that right now)
He was thankful that Jake had an equally strong grip on him as he probably would’ve been on the ground by now. The more those thoughts ran through his head the dizzier he got.
All Jake could do was comfortingly rub Sunghoons waist, carding another hand through his hair.
Eventually, Sunghoon wasn’t sobbing anymore. Yes, tears were still coming out of his eyes, but not at the rate that they were before.
However just because his eyes calmed down, it didn’t mean the rest of his body had caught up.
Sunghoon was hot. It felt like his hands were on fire and his eyes started to burn. He had to get out of his costume. “Jake, off.” Jake slightly let go to look at the frantic Sunghoon. “Huh?” Literally two seconds ago he was clinging onto Jake for dear life.
“I can’t wear this anymore,” Sunghoon grasped at the bottom of his purple shirt. “It’s too- I don’t want to-” He was trying to undo the buttons but his hands were too shaky and his eyes were too blurry.
Jake quickly realized this as it looked like Sunghoon was about to burst out into tears again because of the frustration. He lightly took Sunghoons hands off his shirt and started to reluctantly undo the buttons. “Hoonie, it's cold outside.” He was left in his thin t-shirt. “Don’t care.” He now tried to rub the faint makeup he had on which was quite obviously smudged by his breakdown, now getting even worse.
Jake quickly grabbed his hands, “it’s going to get into your eyes.” Sunghoon tried his best to get his hands out of his boyfriend's grip. “Stop Jake!”
The shirt and the makeup felt constricting. It was something that he put on. It was something that he suggested. The fact that it was still on his body disgusted him. He had to get it off.
But Jake did not once let go of Sunghoons hands even though he was heavily protesting. He knew letting go of his hands would only cause harm and right now Jake had to get him to calm down. At first it was because he wanted to talk about his coach and what had happened, but now it was a matter of calming his boyfriend who seemed to be in the middle of a panic attack. The talk they’ll have can wait.
“Hoonie, listen to me.” Sunghoon's eyes stayed on the ground, tears started to prick at eyes once again.
Jake tried to bend down, desperately trying to catch his gaze. “Love, please look at me.” Sunghoon drew in a breath, finally stopping the movement of his hands. “I have to make sure you’re okay. I need you to look at me.”
Sunghoon sniffled, wiping the tears of his face (well trying to), finally looking at his boyfriend.
As soon as their eyes locked, Jakes heart completely broke. He has never seen Sunghoon like this. His nose was red, his eyes were puffy and it seemed like he had a permanent frown etched onto his face. His hands were still shaky and his breathing didn’t look normal quite yet.
Even though they’ve been together for almost two years now, Jake had never seen Sunghoon cry. Obviously there have been times where Jake has had to cheer him up, but he learnt that Sunghoon deals with his sadness differently.
Jake was one to cry. He wore his heart on his sleeve, having to release the emotions soon after they develop. But Sunghoon dealt with his emotions physically. He cooked his favourite food or binged his favourite movies (which were all Disney - Jake thought it was adorable). He also went skating, so when Jake saw Sunghoon go to the rink more than usual, he knew something was wrong.
So knowing Sunghoon, this was bad, very very bad.
“I need you to breathe okay?” Sunghoon nodded, trying to follow Jake. “See? You’re okay and he’s gone.” Sunghoons frown deepened as he tried to blink stray tears away.
“Let’s go sit down.” He let go of one of Sunghoons hands, causing Sunghoon to think that he was leaving. Jake quickly turned around with a reassuring smile. “I was only letting go of one hand, I’m not going to leave.”
They walked for a minute to find a bench still secluded from the front of the building. Most of the people had probably left by now, but they didn’t want anyone interrupting.
As they sat down Jake took off his sweater. “Take this, you’re shivering.” Sunghoon hadn’t even realized the goosebumps on his arms. “I have a thick shirt on, I’ll be fine, please take it.”
Sunghoon took the hoodie, slipping it over his head.
Silence quickly fell on the two. They were sitting thigh to thigh, but hands clasped with eachothers. Jake had so many questions but he wanted to let Sunghoon think everything out first.
After a couple of minutes, Sunghoons slightly scratchy voice rang through. “How much did you hear?” Sunghoon refused to look at Jake.
“I think I heard most of it.”
He visibly deflated at the comment. As bad as it would’ve been, he would’ve liked to hide the fact that his coach constantly yelled at him.
“Has he always spoken to you like that?” Jake didn’t have to specify who he was talking about.
Sunghoon refused to make eye contact, taking his gaze everywhere except the direction of Jake. “Um, it’s been like this for a couple years.” Jake tried his hardest not to let the shock overtake his features, but he obviously failed as Sunghoon took one look at him and he tucked his chin back down.
“He’s never actually touched me. He only ever does things verbally. He’s threatened to hit me but he’s never done it.” Sunghoon let out a sigh. “I just thought that because he never laid a hand on me, it wasn’t that serious.” Jake's jaw clenched as he closed his eyes, trying to calm himself down. Now was not the time to plan a murder in his head. “I’m sorry for not telling you.” Jake shook his head. “Do not apologize, this is a hard thing to talk about.” Jake didn’t want to come off as accusing or insensitive so he was having a hard time figuring out what to ask.
He paused for a second, contemplating if he should ask something that has been floating around in his head. “Is there a reason you never told me?”
No one else knew and he originally intended to keep it that way. “I didn't want to worry you.”
“It’s my job to worry about you.” Sunghoon shook his head. “No. I’m a grown man. I should be able to solve my little problems myself.”
“Sunghoon, this isn’t a little problem. Your coach is verbally harassing you.”
Sunghoon scrunched his face at Jake's statement. He didn’t want to acknowledge the things that were happening to him. He just planned on dealing with it. Ignoring whatever problem he had made it easy to continue.
Jake saw the pained look on his boyfriend's face and sighed. “Listen to me.” His hand went up to Sunghoons face, bringing his chin up. “My struggles are yours and yours are mine. We’re together to support each other. I want— no I need for you to tell me if you're hurting in any way.”
Jake knew that Sunghoon wasn’t someone to share his emotions. At first it kinda bothered him. He hated not being able to directly help with Sunghoons problems when he was visibly struggling. “I’m not trying to guilt you or make you feel bad for not saying anything because this is incredibly hard to deal with, I just want you to know that I am here and I will always be here.” But that frustration he had dissipated once he realized that simply being there and supporting him was the best thing he could do. Yes, he still tried to get Sunghoon to open up, but he knew when it was the right time to ask and he knew when not to push it further.
“I need whatever doubts you have in your head to leave right now because I am so in love with you it hurts.” Before meeting Sunghoon, Jake never understood how someone could be so attached to another person to the extent of feeling pain when they did. But now Jake understood it. He didn’t go a second without thinking of the amazing person he fell in love with. “And it might not look like it but it is taking everything in me to not break down into tears at the thought of you going through this all by yourself.”
Sunghoon simply whispered I love you and Jake understood. It was Sunghoon’s simple and straightforward way of saying he felt the same way.
Even though it was simple, Jake didn’t mind. Sunghoon was someone who showed his love with actions. He was the type of person to get Jake something because it reminded it of him. He was the person to come home with an object because Jake said he liked it weeks ago.
It was quiet for a moment before Jake said something that was nagging at the back of his head. He wanted to know. “What kind of comments does he make?” A stray tear fell out of Sunghoons eye. Jake gently went to wipe it, his hand now resting in his cheek. “I shouldn’t have asked, you don’t have to tell me.”
Sunghoon didn’t have to say anything for Jake to assume the worst. Good lord did he want to fucking kill that man.
“I can still see your mind turning, talk to me.” Jake gave his hands a small squeeze.
“I… the qualifiers.” Sunghoon had been talking about the qualifiers for weeks. He’s been working so hard and Jake knew it. “We will find a solution. Other coaches exist, we’ll be able to figure it out okay?”
Sunghoon wasn’t so sure. It was so close to the end of the deadline for sign ups. Jake must’ve seen the doubt as he elaborated. “People have seen you skate, any coach that would refuse you is a complete idiot.” Sunghoon was famous in the skating world. “I’m sure Jay and Heeseung could help you too.”
Sunghoon tensed up. He honestly didn’t know what Jay and Heeseung would do if they found out. He could only imagine the destruction they would cause.
“You don’t have to explain why you want a new coach. They will help you, I will help you, okay?”
Eventually, Sunghoon nodded, face still puffy with tear stained cheeks. Thank god they were at the back of the building where no one could see them. “I look like a mess.”
Jake pouted in reprimand. “Don’t say that, you look beautiful.” Sunghoon let out a laugh, which was technically closer to a small puff of air but Jake was going to take anything he could get.
“Let’s go home.” Sunghoon was tired and Jake could tell.
Once getting up, Sunghoon stalled. “I…” Jake saw his face tighten, looking like he was trying to hold back another set of tears. “Can I have another hug?”
Jake didn’t even respond, grabbing sunghoon placing them into the exact position they were in before.
—————
They were laying on Jake's bed, legs tangled up under the covers, Sunghoon’s head on Jake's chest.
“Can you talk?”
Jake's eyebrows furrowed. “Hm?”
“I need you to talk until I fall asleep.” Jake’s fingers hadn’t stopped carding through Sunghoons hair. “You need to distract me.” He had always found Jakes voice as a source of comfort
Jake hummed in silent agreement, drawing circles on Sunghoons hip. “I can do that.”
He saw Sunghoon close his eyes. “How about I tell you the story of how I broke my nose scuba diving?”
Jake started talking. Seeing Sunghoons pained face completely relaxed gave him comfort. He knew this wasn’t over completely, but for now it was. Sunghoon was able to calm down and that was all Jake wanted.
Once he felt Sunghoon’s shallow breaths, he stopped his story.
Before finally going to sleep, he texted Niki, telling him to make an announcement saying he won’t be active for a couple days
Niki messaged him back fairly quickly, telling him that he’ll handle everything. He didn’t pry, knowing that whatever happened was serious if he was willing to stall his channel. He also threw in a couple of concerned messages, telling him to take care of himself and Sunghoon and call if he needed anything.
Jake smiled at the text, putting his phone on the nightstand. As much as Niki liked to pretend he didn’t care, he was still a child with a heart of gold.
Now starting to feel the exhaustion creep up on him, he gave Sunghoon a light kiss on the forehead, closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep.
