Work Text:
The hour-long documentary begins with the now-infamous unaired footage of Todoroki Shouto and Bakugou Katsuki being interviewed at UA after their joint hero debut.
Interviewer [sounding strained]: Do the two of you normally have fun training together?
Bakugou [snarling]: Does it seem that way to you? You need to get your eyes checked, or your brain!
Todoroki [calm]: We're friends.
Bakugou [turning to face him, growling]: Huh? Don't just say random stuff! Since when have we been friends?!
Todoroki [also turning, placid]: We spent a lot of time together because of the supplementary classes, right?
Bakugou: What kind of system is that?! Spending a lot of time together doesn't mean we are friends, dammit!
Todoroki: What system are you talking about?
Bakugou [losing his last nerve]: I don't know! You should get your brain checked too!!
Voiceover by Kawano Michiko, popular late night TV host and documentary presenter [amused and cheery]: I think it is safe to say the relationship between Proheroes Shouto and Dynamight has always been a chaotic one.
Rapid flashes of videos of Todoroki and Bakugou over the years- Bakugou and Todoroki at their first year UA sports festival, Bakugou holding an unconscious Todoroki up by his shirt front, shaking him and screaming in his face, before being knocked out by Midnight's powers. Paparazzi videos of a younger Shouto and Dynamight from their sidekick days, sharing coffee from the same thermos flask during patrol on a snowy winter day. Bakugou and Todoroki side-by-side, fighting in a battle against a mutant that is tall as a skyscraper and ripping through central Tokyo. Todoroki and Bakugou sharing a soft look at their wedding, a reel from Prohero Uravity's social media that now has over 20 million likes.
Voiceover by Kawano: And today, we get to get a candid glimpse behind the curtain at the daily life of this enigmatic couple, who also happen to be two of Japan's top Pro Heroes!
The scene transitions to footage of a cherrywood front door, and the camera spans to a panoramic view of the property attached to it. It shows a lovely minka-inspired two-story modern home, with a minimalist zen garden-style front yard flanking the entryway.
Voiceover by Kawano: We are here at Proheroes Shouto and Dynamight's home in central Tokyo. Despite its proximity to the bustling and crowded Shibuya and Minato wards of the city, the property is in a wonderfully tranquil and cozy location. The time is 6AM and we are about to spend an entire day with our favorite heroes!
A camera lens cap is shakily removed. It is followed by a vertigo of motion before the view settles on Todoroki Shouto, standing in front of a bathroom mirror. He is wearing a faded Hero Dynamight t-shirt and soft Deku merchandise sweatpants. The color scheme of bright orange and tropical green clashes magnificently with his red-and-white hair, which is still in a tousled bedhead. He looks unfairly beautiful considering how he's clearly just woken up.
Todoroki [smiling blankly at the camera in the mirror]: Hi. I was told to start recording as soon as I woke up, but hope you all don't mind that I brushed my teeth first. Um, right.
He already looks completely clueless with what to do, and shuffles in place for a second, awkward.
Todoroki [monotone]: I was told to go about my day as usual while the camera runs. And what I usually do at this point is go feed the cats and make some tea. So I'm... going to do that...
The camera tilts downward, viewpoint shaky as he crosses a room, then goes down a hallway, before climbing down a flight of stairs. Flashed glimpses of the house are seen around the unfocused footage. Tatami-covered floors, a vibrant tapestry that looks like something from central Asia. A brief view of a high-ceilinged living room that is a harmonious mix of contemporary and traditional Japanese architecture styles.
Voiceover by Kawano [sounding resigned]: We failed to clearly instruct Todoroki-san to give us a tour of his beautiful home too, which was definitely our fault. But hopefully, not all is lost.
The camera finally finds a steady focus when Todoroki arrives at an open plan kitchen-dining area with sliding doors leading to a small side garden at the far end. It is airy and well-lit, minimalist without being sparse. One corner is taken up by a giant TV that is easily viewable from all sides of the room.
Todoroki: Uh, this is the kitchen and dining room. We spend a lot of our time at home in here. Katsuki is a very good cook. And we also often have guests for dinner.
He gestures vaguely around him, pointing at the well-furnished range and stovetop, then the large wood table with eight chairs, as well as the kitchen island with four barstools facing each other. He steadies the camera after that to focus on the two cat bowls in a corner, like that is the most important detail.
Todoroki: Those are Yuki and Taro's food bowls. Need to give them wet food for breakfast, the automatic feeder kicks in for dinner.
Todoroki moves towards one of the cabinets above the sink. As if summoned, soft thumping noises of paws on floor are heard off-camera, before an inquisitive fluffy white Angora cat comes over to wind around Todoroki's ankles. She stares up with her heterochromatic yellow and blue eyes, meowing mournfully in the soft tones of a terribly-starving and neglected creature.
Todoroki [camera pointing down to so they can get a clearer focus on the cat]: This is Yuki. Yuki, come say hi. [He leans down to scratch behind the fluffy cat's ears. Her purring is loud due to the proximity of the recorder, the camera lens is briefly obscured by fluffy white fur.] I don't know where Taro is, probably still cuddling with Katsuki upstairs. Katsuki continues to insist we should not let the cats in bed with us, even though he cuddles them the most while sleeping.
Voiceover by Kawano [deeply amused]: Who would have thought Dynamight is the cuddly one?
Todoroki [awkwardly]: Okay, I'm going to put this down somewhere so I can feed the cats and make some tea.
He looks around a bit before deciding to place the video recorder on a low kitchen shelf. It gives a good view of the stovetop as well as the cat food bowls on the floor on the other side.
Just as Todoroki is portioning out some wet food from a tin, more clattering of paws on floor is heard and a fluffy orange cat zooms inside, yowling piteously and twining around Todoroki's ankles in a frenzy.
Todoroki: Yes, yes, you can eat, one minute.
The atmosphere is serene, pale dawn just breaking outside and Todoroki is kneeling down and cooing over the cats, petting their backs as they voraciously dig into their breakfast. After a few moments, Todoroki heads to the stove, pulling out a kettle and starts brewing a full pot of gyokuro.
Todoroki: We have only recently gone back to having tea with breakfast. We both picked up a terrible coffee addiction during our sidekick years, took us years to dial back. We are trying to get back into the habit of having green tea in the mornings. But we still have gyokuro instead of sencha, we need the caffeine.
The kettle boils and the pot of steaming tea is served into two mugs.
As if on cue, there is the noise of footsteps thumping around upstairs, and a distant string of curses that are bleeped out by the editors.
Todoroki [deadpan and looking right into the camera]: Looks like my husband is awake.
He picks up the camera to point towards the kitchen entryway.
Loud footsteps descend the stairs, and Bakugou Katsuki materializes, looking as sleep-rumpled as Todoroki. He's wearing a faded pair of Red Riot merchandise shorts, a black skull t-shirt, and an expression of towering fury.
Bakugou [scowling]: The (bleep) are you doing?!
Todoroki: We agreed to do a 'Day in the Life' segment. Nakano-san put it on our calendars.
Bakugou: I didn't agree to (bleep)! The (bleep)! [He turns to the camera.] The (bleep) kind of voyeuristic stalker nonsense is this?! Die!
Voiceover by Kawano [amused]: We were warned of the possibility of this... explosive reaction from Bakugou-san by their PR manager, Nakano-san. It seems the warning was warranted.
Todoroki [unconcerned by the profanity]: Come have tea.
Bakugou [taking the proffered mug of tea]: Don't tell me what to do!
Voiceover by Kawano [still amused]: And it also seems like Prohero Dynamight is just as prickly at home as he is on the field!
The camera is placed on the kitchen island, focused down the length of it. The video settles on Todoroki and Bakugou sat down on the barstools facing each other. They sip their tea companionably, Bakugou scrolling through his phone while Todoroki switches on morning news at a low volume.
Bakugou [frowning at his phone]: Wait, we are patrolling together today?
Todoroki: Hmm. Nakano-san rearranged our schedules for today so we can do the segment recording.
Bakugou scoffs, glaring at the camera, before going back to pretending it doesn't exist.
Bakugou [grumbling under his breath]: I guess this nuisance is worth something at least. [Speaking louder] Oi, what do you want for breakfast?
The video footage transitions into a montage of morning domesticity. Bakugou skillfully cracks eggs, chopping green leafy vegetables and preparing two expertly-rolled salmon flake-and-scallion tamagoyaki with a side of kale kobachi. The video is clearly taken by Todoroki, who may not be a good cinematographer but is certainly a very appreciative one, zooming in on the beautifully presented food while making happy hums, prompting Bakugou to describe the recipe till the flavor comes to life even on a video reel.
Voiceover by Kawano: Todoroki-san was right, Bakugou-san really is an excellent cook!
The camera is placed on the kitchen island again, focused the same as before. Todoroki and Bakugou settle back on the barstools, steaming plates of delicious food before them.
Todoroki: Itadakimasu.
As they eat, a voiceover recording by Todoroki from another interview is added in to say: No matter how busy we get, we always try to share breakfast and dinner together. It feels like we are starting and ending our days right.
The footage skips.
The camera is now back on one of the low kitchen shelves. The kitchen island has been cleared and Bakugou stands in the kitchen, loading used dishes into the dishwasher. From this vantage point, Todoroki can just be seen at the periphery, playing with Yuki and Taro while sitting cross-legged on the floor.
Another time skip.
Todoroki is in the living room with a watering jar, tending to the many plants around the house. It is clear Bakugou is filming him, based on how the camera follows him around. Todoroki looks focused and serene as he waters and prunes the plants, the entirety of him exuding a domestic sort of contentment.
Voiceover by Kawano: Wah, Prohero Shouto is just as dreamy and handsome at home as he is on the field!
Bakugou [from behind the camera]: You gonna talk about that thing you fuss around with every couple weeks?
He moves the camera to focus on an exquisite ikebana arrangement placed at the center of their living room table. The nonchalance of Bakugou's voice disguises the careful attention and artistry with which he captures every angle and detail of the ikebana with the camera, displaying it to its fullest beauty.
Todoroki: Oh. Yes, my mother and I used to make ikebana arrangements together when I was very young. I still quite enjoy it, and it is nice to share the hobby with her again now that she's out of hospital.
Bakugou [off-camera]: He's been making ikebana arrangements for years. He had a new one every time I dropped by his dorm room at UA.
Todoroki: I didn't realize you noticed.
Bakugou [low, but not low enough to be missed by the camera]: I always noticed everything about you.
The footage skips again.
When the camera lens is removed, it's to focus on a brightly-lit genkan.
Todoroki [holding the camera]: Katsuki made me shut off the camera while we went to get ready for work. Sorry.
Bakugou [grumbling]: I wasn't gonna give a chance for the internet creeps snoop around our bedroom, (bleep) off.
The camera moves to focus on the two heroes, reflected in a large mirror at the entryway. They're both dressed in full hero gear.
Todoroki: It's now 8AM. I will record more at the agency.
A montage of the trip is edited with pleasant music overlaid over the footage - train ride showing buildings and streets and people zooming by, a brief walk down bustling Tokyo streets, and then, a sweeping view of the massive building that leads to the Joint Heroes Agency that was set up in Shibuya after the war.
Todoroki: Here we are.
The footage cuts off again, and in the next frame, they see Bakugou putting on a strange device that he clips right in front of his head piece. The camera view jostles as Todoroki lifts a hand, adjusting something. Clearly this camera is clipped to Todoroki's head somehow.
A voice from off-camera: This is a hands-free recording device. This way we can continue recording as unintrusively as possible while you are both on patrol!
Bakugou: The hell? Why didn't we get this at home instead of those stupid handheld recorders?!
Todoroki: Nakano-san was convinced we'd just forget it was recording and go to the bathroom while keeping it on or something. She hoped if we only wore it during patrol we'd be a bit more aware.
Bakugou: Dammit, now I'm gonna be paranoid all day about you flashing your (bleep) on national tv.
Todoroki: It's okay, Katsuki. I'm sure they'll edit it out even if I do.
Voiceover by Kawano, laughing: We'd like to take the moment to reassure fans that we did not need to edit out any private footage during post-production. The heroes were perfect video bloggers the entire time!
A video montage plays again, condensing the hours-long patrol into about fifteen minutes.
A brief moment of the two top-ranked heroes strolling through one of the busiest junctions in Shibuya, hero fans squealing and calling out greetings as they walk past. A petty thief running away from robbing a jewelry store, stopped in under three seconds by a perfectly-aimed low intensity AP shot to the back of his knee. A brief pause to drink tea at a corner cafe, Todoroki crouched to let a stray alley cat sniff his fingers and rub up against his legs, while Bakugou leans against the wall beside him, silently observing. Todoroki throwing up ice to stop a frail old woman from getting hit by a car that tried to jump the red light, averting disaster in the nick of time.
A sound bite from Todoroki plays over the footage.
Voiceover by Todoroki: Hero work isn't always big villain fights and life-or-death moments. A majority of the time, we just walk around, being vigilant and helping out where we can.
Footage of the rule-breaking car driver bowing and apologizing while a traffic police writes him a ticket. The old woman who was saved pats Todoroki's cheek, praising him for his quick reflexes. More short video clips follow, Todoroki catching a runaway dog, Bakugou yelling at a shoplifting kid, a wave at Proheroes Uravity and Chargebolt as they pass by the area. A brief stop at a conbini to grab a quick meal, which is then consumed while sitting companionably at a corner park bench.
Todoroki: It's nearly the end of our shift.
Bakugou: You know what we should do? Give the extras watching at home a real (bleep)ing idea of what being a hero feels like.
Todoroki: What do you suggest?
The footage transitions to a gorgeous dizzying view of Tokyo city from the air.
Bakugou [yelling as he uses his explosions to propel himself midair]: Yeah! That's what I'm talking about!
The scene shifts, now showing a cityscape passing by at terrifying speeds at ground level.
Todoroki [propelling himself forward with ice, voice half-garbled by the wind]: It took me years to reach this level of control with my ice, but it is one of my favorite uses for my powers.
The video is then edited to show both Bakugou's and Todoroki's camera views side-by-side, providing a spectacular rollercoaster-like ride through the urban jungle of Shibuya for the next few exhilarating minutes.
When the footage transitions to the next scene, it is almost a whiplash. The camera is focused on a clock showing it is 4 PM in a boring white-grey corridor of some official looking building.
Todoroki: Our patrol is over, so now it's time to do -
Bakugou [grunting]: Paperwork.
Todoroki [sighing heavily]: Paperwork.
The video is back to being footage recorded on a handheld video camera. The recording device is set at the end of the table so it can capture both Todoroki and Bakugou in frame, sitting across from each other, with piles of folders in front of them.
Silence for a couple of seconds, only interrupted by the shuffle of pages being turned and the tapping of laptop keyboards.
Bakugou: (bleep) (bleep) (bleep).
Todoroki [gravely]: (bleep).
Voiceover by Todoroki [sounding serious and grim]: The ultimate enemy of every Prohero is actually paperwork.
The clock now shows 5.30 PM and Todoroki and Bakugou are stretching, looking haggard and tired.
Bakugou: Let's go the (bleep) home.
The video skips again.
Todoroki and Bakugou are dressed in nondescript sweatshirts worn over their hero costume bottoms, and they are standing in... a supermarket. Todoroki is clearly the one holding the camera, though with how off-center the footage is, he seems to have half-forgotten he's supposed to be recording with it.
Bakugou [frowning down at the label on a packet of extra firm tofu]: What do you want for dinner?
Todoroki [promptly]: Cold soba. [A hopeful note enters his voice.] And strawberry ice cream?
Bakugou [rolling his eyes]: It's amazing you don't have diabetes already with how much of your diet is just sugar and carbs.
Todoroki: I have a quick metabolism.
Bakugou: No, I ain't serving up that junk for dinner yet again. [He picks out a nice bundle of enoki mushrooms and decisively adds it to the basket he's holding.] I'm going to make kimchi fried rice.
Todoroki [sulkily]: Why ask me what I want if you're just going to say no anyway?
Bakugou looks up, and the grin that flashes across his face is blindingly fond and amused, even in this terribly-framed and shaky handheld camera footage.
Bakugou: Because sometimes I say yes, and you always look so excited when I do, and those times are cute as (bleep).
Todoroki [blushing slightly]: Ah.
Bakugou [leaning forward]: Idiot.
The camera is by now completely forgotten in Todoroki's hand but luckily, the footage is just about able to capture the rakish smile on Bakugou's face as he plants a quick kiss on his husband's willing mouth.
Bakugou [still grinning]: And yes, we can pick up some strawberry ice cream for dessert, Princess.
Voiceover by Kawano: Awww!
The footage transitions to the two heroes arriving back at their home, coordinating on putting away their groceries and getting started on dinner with a comfortable familiarity.
Voiceover by Kawano, continuing: When it first leaked in the media that Prohero Shouto was dating Dynamight, many of Shouto's fans were vocally unhappy. With Dynamight's rude and prickly attitude in the media, and what was known by then about Shouto's family history and his fraught relationship with his retired hero father Endeavor - internet speculation raged that this was an undesirable relationship for the young hero. However, Bakugou Katsuki has proven again and again how wrong those early opinions were.
Video montage of Bakugou and Todoroki puttering about the kitchen, moving around each other comfortably. Bakugou cooks while Todoroki hands him things without even needing to be asked, the two chatting idly. Todoroki occasionally picks up the recorder again to focus on the motions of Bakugou chopping vegetables, sauteing onions and garlic, the steam rising from the pan as he cooks. There is not much conversation, but their movements speak a language of its own, one of domestic harmony and patiently-built affection. The way Todoroki is focusing the camera on Bakugou's cooking, it really highlights the gold wedding band on Bakugou's left ring finger.
The video transitions and they are seated across from each other on barstools at the kitchen island again, the camera set at the other end to offer a good view of the both of them. The TV is playing quietly in the background, set on a news channel that neither of them are paying any mind to.
Todoroki [digging into the meal]: Usually we'd talk about our patrol during dinner, but we spent the whole day together today so. [He shrugs.]
Bakugou [grumbling]: Usually he'd tell me about every stray cat he met during his patrol while not sharing anything else that's actually useful, is what he means.
The camera isn't set at a good vantage point to catch it, but the way Todoroki's body moves, he clearly just twined his leg with Bakugou's under the table.
Todoroki [coy]: You like hearing me talk about the cats.
Bakugou: Dumbass, it's not the stupid cats I like hearing about. [He turns to look straight into the camera, surprising Todoroki, and most likely, the audience too.] What I actually like is listening to this idiot sound so happy.
A moment of silence, as Bakugou turns back to look intensely into Todoroki's eyes, some silent conversation happening between them.
Todoroki reaches across the kitchen island to take Bakugou's hand in his. The camera is set at the perfect height to see how firmly Bakugou grasps back.
They go back to companionably concentrating on their dinner, one hand still entwined.
Voiceover by Kawano, warmth in her voice: We will leave our Proheroes here to enjoy their dinner, after a whole day spent in their company. It was a privilege to get a glimpse behind the curtain of Shouto and Dynamight's capable public lives. To see the softer sides of Bakugou Katsuki and Todoroki Shouto, and understand exactly how these two busy Proheroes have managed such a stable committed relationship for so many years, has been heartwarming. I think we have all gained a new perspective of our favorite heroes today.
And with that, our time with them is at an end. But don't fret, our journey continues next week, at a different place, and with a different unique story! We can't wait to share it with you. Stay tuned.
