Chapter 1
Notes:
Okay since the "Aim To Be A Pokémon Master" series isn't planning to bring back Greninja and a few of my favorite characters anytime soon and considering it's Ash's final journey-
I decided to make one myself.
My first Pokémon fanfic ever, I hope it is enjoyable! Here we go~
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
The night was a starry one. The full moon shined brightly in the sky, it's calming light falling on a lake surrounded by the tall trees and a natural garden of wild-flowers growing near it.
The occasional light breeze softly brushing against the water and making the flowers move in an ever so slight way, created a mesmerizing scene.
The water pokemon present in the lake jumped in and out of the water every now and then. The other forest pokemon like Flabébé, Florges slept near or in the flowers grounds. Other pokemon like Trevenant, Odish, Rattata, Spewpa gathered close and slept near trees while the bird pokemon peacefully rested upon the tree's branches and their nests. It was a quiet yet peaceful scenery.
All of this was being seen by a silent observer who himself was perched on a high branch from a tree which was slightly taller than the other trees present at the location. The blue ninja pokemon slightly leaned on the tree as he stood up on the branch itself and stared at the beautiful moon. It eyes visibly soften a bit as if it were remembering something.
However within mere moments a huge explosion is heard from the back, making the dual type snap back to full attention.
He turns towards the direction of the noise which came off from a relatively near area and immediately sees a huge dust cloud forming. A cacophony of loud cries are heard coming from the local pokemon from the place of explosion. and the bird pokemon groups flying away from the spot as fast as they could.
Without wasting any further time, Greninja leapt from one branch to another to reach the site as quickly as possible.
As it jumped, another figure joined in albeit the ground heading towards the same direction as Greninja. It had small canine body which had a primarily black body and green at his neck and eyes area. Greninja noticing the figure, jumped down and ran along side it on the ground.
"I feel huge vines pulsating there."
'Squishy' aka Z1 telepathically said to the frog pokemon who said nothing in response.
"Ninja. Grenin?" The frog pokemon asked.
"Our friend had to attend a very important issue which required his urgent attention. I believe he should be back by sunrise"
Upon hearing the response, Greninja nodded and focused on reaching the spot.
However as they neared the location, another explosion was heard at a distance.
Squishy immediately used its cell vision and spotted vines growing at a rapid speed and destroying its surroundings.
"More vines at the north east"
"Nin, Grenin. Greninja, Grenin"
"Are you sure?"
"Ja."
Upon hearing the response, the canine pokemon leapt and dashed towards the direction of the source of the explosion.
Within minutes, another much louder noise was heard from the same place Greninja was heading and it increased its speed immediately.
As Greninja neared the place, a wild vine appeared right in front of him, slamming towards it. Greninja quickly dodged and used cut on it successfully cutting through it.
Another vine right from where he stood, only for him to high jump and dodge it.
The vine somehow enlarged itself in size and length and headed towards him directly, coiling itself to trap the ninja pokemon in.
However with years of training and experience of these wild plant life, Greninja swiftly dodged the vine, mid-air and used it as a medium to gain ground back and when he neared the main stem connected to the ground, he slashed cleanly through it, rendering the vines useless as they fell on the ground lifelessly.
The place became immediately quiet. The pokemon who went into hiding slowly poked their heads out of the bush or ground for some. Greninja gave them a calming look, sending a "All's Well here" kind of look which the creatures slowly started to believe in and eased up but refused to enter the ring of destruction and slowly moved away.
The dual type looked at its surroundings. Many trees were uprooted from their very roots and thrown around carelessly, the one which remained firm on the ground had themselves completely crushed with only a tiny bit of their trunk remaining. The forest floor which once had soft grass and small flowers growing on it, now lay barren; devoid of any sign of life. The trees which did manage to survive the assault were withering down in a fast pace which was all too familiar for the ninja pokemon.
Greninja bent down and grabbed a bit of soil from the ground only to realize the soft loamy soil is now completely sandy, it has transformed into so due to the abnormal nature of the vines which makes the soil infertile and takes away every bit of fertility and moisture away from it; making the soil absolutely useless and in a way sucking the life away from it.
Greninja fists his hand as the last bit of soil escape, his eyes narrowing. He knew if this kept going on the forest will no longer be a forest and it will make many pokemon habitat-less. He knew he had to talk to Zygrade about this but he also knew they weren't unaware of the imminent crisis themselves.
But that's when it notices something on the ground, shining under the moonlight.
The frog pokemon approaches the object which seemed like it had been placed there for a while now and was a bit rusty looking.
He carefully tries to pick the object but realizes how strongly it was planted to the ground. Finding this very suspicious, Greninja tears it out of the ground and then looks at the device carefully.
It resembled almost like a syringe of sort some black liquid inside it. He then notices a small appendage poking out from the device's side almost completely hidden out of plain sight, eventually coming out fully like a worm out of its little burrow; the tip of this appendage revealing a camera whose focusing ring rotated in and out on its own and within one second, started to blink in red light.
Feeling extremely suspicious for obvious reasons, Greninja tries to throw the device off only for it to latch onto his hand further as a rubber like material came off from its compartment, wrapping itself around the dual type's hand.
Before he could react any further, it electrocuted the pokemon for agonizing minutes before eventually making it fall on its knees.
Greninja panted and looked at the device at its hand which now had a timer of '10…9…8…7-' seconds going on as time passed, he managed to look around his entire surroundings one last time only to notice the entire place was lit by similar red blinking lights with a timer ticking.
This indicated the entire place being filled with similar devices which were perhaps camouflaged. The moon is shining rather brightly today.
"...3…2…1…0." And the forest area bursted into explosion.
At some forest, Ash and his friends are sitting by a camp-fire as Brock stirs the food cooking over it and Misty puts plates and cutlery over the table along with Pikachu who volunteered to help as Ash completes putting out the plates for the pokemon on the ground.
"Hey Ash, can you put more twigs and branches in the fire?"
Brock says as he notices the flames getting a bit dimmer.
"Yeah, of course" Ash replied as he rushed to the bundle, they collected beforehand.
As he picked them up and made his way to Brock, he suddenly felt a pang of pain hit him near his neck for a second, only for it to disappear completely and replace with a bit of tiredness. This distracted him so much that it made him forget what he was doing at that time, making a lot of the wood fall off his grip. He stares at the full moon aimlessly with a blank expression, unaware of what he is doing.
"Ash?" His friends call in concern.
No answer.
"Pikapi…? Pikapi!" Pikachu leaps onto his best friend's shoulder which successfully snaps the latter into reality.
"Pi- Pikachu?" Ash says softly in an almost surprised daze.
"Are you feeling alright?" Misty asks, concerned.
"Oh uh- I am sorry! I might have zoned out!" Ash replied sheepishly as he subconsciously rubbed the back of his neck where he felt the sting before.
"Today has been rather eventful too. That wild Fearow chasing us…then Professor Oak calling us to deliver a parcel to Professor Sycamore. I think we all can use some rest" Brock reasoned.
"Yeah…that must be it" Ash reasoned though deep in his heart, he knew that was a total lie. He stared at the starry sky again.
When he opened his eyes, he saw himself surrounded by fire.
His vision blurry and body weak, possibly burned and paralyzed from the explosion and electrocution from the device it held previously.
Memories starting to come back as to what happened before he got knocked out.
He checked his hand which he used to hold the device, it was badly burned and needed immediate treatment.
Pushing other thoughts aside, Greninja tried its best to stand, only to fall back. He tried again and with with struggle, managed to get up.
Letting his injured hand rest, he used his other hand to summon a water shuriken in order. First he needs to extinguish the fire in order to make his escape. He was sure Zygrade would understand. But before he could do anything, a loud human voice shouts out.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't the infamous Greninja!" A Green haired woman dressed in an orange outfit yelled.
Greninja's eyes narrow in anger and disgust upon recognizing the Team Flare member. He lets out a hiss ferally.
"Happy to meet you too." Bryony says sarcastically. "However, we can keep this talk for a later time. Right now, why not have a visit to our headquarters?" She snaps her fingers and as if taking her queue, other 3 team flare grunts dressed in their uniforms jump outside in the view of the Kalosian water starter pokemon. They don't waste a single second and throw their pokeballs out, revealing their pokemon, ready to attack.
"But since its a 1 pokemon vs 3 pokemon, why not let the match become a bit more fair? Besides it will protect your forest which you work so hard to protect!"
"Jellicent, use water sprout!"
"Barbaracle, use Water gun!"
"Clauncher, bubble now!"
However Greninja paid no attention to these. Even if he ignored the fact, all these attacks which were meant to make the match "fair" were aimed at his direction (only for him to dodge at the last minute) but he knew they weren't planning to make this fair or save the forest. It was just to not harm their own pokemon with fire and not letting him escape. He threw his water shuriken on the ground, creating a temporary smoke screen to give himself time to run away while also confusing the others.
"Oh not so easily!…Bisharp use metal sound to the left!" Bryony said as she pressed her lens device twice and threw her pokeball revealing her partner.
Greninja's eyes widen but it quickly counters by using double team effectively dodging the move and then hitting Bisharp dead on its head with acrobatics making it fall on the ground. However he lost his smoke cover completely. Without missing a beat, Greninja summons a huge water shuriken (much to its own surprise) using one hand and throws it at the barbacle who was too late to dodge the attack and immediately fainted as well.
"Everyone launch your attacks! No mercy!" Bryony yelled as she returned her unconscious Bisharp in its ball and took out another.
"Liepard go!"
Greninja could have sworn he saw a smirk on her face.
Ash felt a shiver run down his spine. Suddenly feeling even more exhausted, his eyelids growing heavier by the second. He stopped eating and put his spoon down, as he stared at the bowl filled with food in front of him.
"Something feels wrong…" he thinks to himself.
"Pi?" Pikachu first noticed his friend acting weird and immediately ran to him.
Lucario felt a change at his trainer's aura and neared his trainer as well.
Misty and Brock who were talking suddenly became quiet and looked at their friend who looked uncomfortable and distracted but what concerned them the most was Ash just staring at the food and not gobbling it up in one go like he usually does.
This lead to other pokemon to notice as well.
"Ash…are you really sure you are okay?" Misty's concern growing by the second.
"I can give you a check up if you want-" Brock offers gently.
Snapping back from his thoughts, Ash immediately puts his hands in front of him "No no no! I am completely fine! Just not feeling hungry now that's all!"
Judging by the looks the others gave him, it became very obvious that they aren't going to buy that, Ash sweat dropped. However another wave of exhaustion hit him only for him to slightly bend his head in the front involuntarily and then he suddenly realized his hands and feets were becoming icy cold.
Greninja panted heavily. He successfully managed to knock out all the grunts pokemon however this Liepard…was a completely different story. Not only has it grown much stronger than the last time but it had learnt a couple of new tricks as well and due to his own injuries…he is not countering its attacks well.
"Even after all that damage and battling, the fact that you are still standing and capable of fighting is very impressive. I will give you that" Bryony said emotionlessly. She added "However I suggest you to stop using double team because with our new technology, we can see through it. Literally"
Greninja ignores her talks and aims another water shuriken, double its normal size, and aims it at the Liepard.
"Counter using Dark pulse!"
The Pokémon immediately obeys and aims the attack.
Both attacks cancel out each other and the impact causing both the pokemon shift backwards a bit and stop attacking for a while to restore their own stamina.
That's when Greninja noticed something, strange red marks have appeared on his arms and are spreading throughout his body albeit very slowly. The dual typed pokemon's eyes widen as it realizes the implication.
Battle Bond.
'But…how?"
"Wondering how that happened?" Bryony grinned slightly.
"Hmm…do you remember that device which you picked earlier?"
Greninja stays quiet but high on guard.
"It contained a chemical which can not only destroy the flora and fauna of this place but an additional chemical which our team worked on for years…" Her grins grows wider.
"It has a neurological chemical compound which tricks your brain into thinking you need urgent power-"
Greninja's eyes widen in shock.
That means-
"Yeah, that's right. It forces your instinctual senses out and causes a forced battle bond. However seeing your current state…I'd say it was 40% success." She shrugged.
Greninja could feel his rage starting to bubble inside.
This woman truly had no idea how dangerous the plan was, not just for her but for him and Ash as well…
"But even if it had a…slow effect but if the theories and hypotheses about Battle Bond are correct then…you should be starting to share your pain and exhaustion to your trainer as well while also deriving their power" She let out a small chuckle.
"Even if it's a very small part of it considering your lackluster transformation."
Greninja didn't wait to hear any more of her non sense and summoned a huge water shuriken with all the strength it had and aimed to throw it at her direction.
"Cross Poison" heard Greninja, a second too late to dodge the move which came from the back. This made him slump on the ground as he struggled to look back. His vision growing blurry by the second.
"Ah, Celosia. You are one early bird!" Bryony remarked mockingly.
"Hmph apologies for the late arrival. I got occupied while trying to capture Z1." The person referred to spoke, her partner Drapion following her closely along with a few grunts.
Pushing all his exhaustion aside, Greninja tried its best to get back on his feet.
No…it can't be-
His uninjured hand glew up as a water shuriken got created.
"Oh atleast tell me, you captured it" Bryony exasperated.
"I did and it is safely secured unlike you who is still playing with the target." Celosia said smiling much to the other woman's irritation.
Using this time, Greninja threw a water shuriken at the Drapion who took the attack with almost no effort and assumed battle position.
"Enough is enough. Drapion use confuse Ray, Now!"
Unfortunately just before Greninja could leap out of the way, the paralyze he got during the explosion hit him again, making him frozen at his spot as the attack hit him and everything started to turn even dizzier than it already was and the sounds around him sounded distant.
"...still struggling"
"...Metal Cla…"
And then darkness embraced him.

Chapter Text
A single drop of water fell on a larger plain water surface, causing a ripple.
Drip
Ash slowly opened his eyes. His body felt light weighted but at the same time, very heavy and exhausted. His head aching painfully.
Gaining a bit more consciousness, he realizes he is laying on a water surface emitting a dim blue light. Surprisingly, he didn't feel wet and felt like he was floating.
Wherever he was, the place was a dark void, never-ending but felt calming, warm and familiar-
And that's when he snaps into full consciousness and recognizes the place immediately.
He tries to get up and stand but his body suddenly felt more exhausted and heavier, his eyelids growing heavier by the second.
"Something is very wrong…This has never happened before…" Ash frantically thinks as he is about to slip off into sleep once again.
"No…I can't give up! Greninja he may need me…!"
Filled with new found determination, Ash starts trying harder to get up and fights against the exhaustion, eventually with much struggle, succeeding in standing up. His sleepiness lessening even by just a little.
"Greninja!" He calls loudly.
No answer.
"Greninja, are you alright?!"
No answer.
"Greni- argh" A strong headache suddenly hits him.
A torrent water engulfs him and suddenly, his world bursts in scenarios and colours seen through the eyes of the frog pokemon himself too rapid for him to process or make sense of but only enough to feel the pokemon's feelings and emotions of happiness, joy, fear, guilt…his pain and sorrow, everything.
The torrent of water calms and falls down, revealing a distraught Ash and a fully transformed Greninja in front him.
Ash takes a step forward but his knees give out and before he could fall on his face, a pair of strong hands hold him, putting him in a sitting position and holding him firmly.
"Greninja…" Ash whispers as he pants, exhaustion hitting him again.
"I have missed you." Greninja replies via the link.
"Missed you too. It's been a while since we last met" Ash replies softly, trying to move away from his hold and stand but almost immediately falls again, only for the frog pokemon to grip him tightly, providing him support.
Greninja doesn't fail to notice the fruitless attempts of Ash trying to hide his exhaustion and casts his eyes and head down in shame and guilt.
"Greninja…-" The Pokémon refuses to look at its trainer face to face and keeps its head down, looking at another direction.
"...what's wrong…?" Ash asked worriedly.
"I am sorry" Sadness, guilt and a hidden yet growing anger came from the pokemon as he spoke the words with a heavy heart.
"...Sorry? For what?" Ash says in surprise.
"For this" He replied, still refusing to look at his trainer.
"Greninja…what's wrong…? You know I can feel your emotions…You are hiding something"
A thousand questions came up to Ash as he looked at how oddly Greninja was behaving. Why did he initiate this link? What was going on? What was he hiding from him? Why were his emotions so…negative? The only times it happened was during his and Alain's match where he fainted and the next time being when they lost against Wulfric.
He knew could just intrude into the former's thoughts but that would just worsen the situation and that their bond was built on trust and understanding. He won't barge into his space intentionally…unless it was absolutely necessary.
When no answer came, Ash asked once again,
"You have to tell me what's wron-"
as he gently grabbed the frog pokemon's other hand, he suddenly felt lightheaded. His head lolled backwards, which alerted the frog pokemon who gripped him tighter to prevent him from falling.
It was at that right moment that Ash saw everything. From the peaceful quiet night to how it was tricked into eventually becoming captured by Team Flare members.
He also listened to all the words Celosia and Bryony had to say, his anger growing inside of him at how badly they hurt Greninja and panic slowly rising as Celosia declared she has captured Squishy.
Ash exhales a deep breath and pants as he returns to 'reality'. Greninja carefully loosening his grip, giving its trainer space to breathe.
"...Just how long…did you want to hide this?" Ash asked, trying his absolute best to keep his growing anger and frustration under control.
Greninja didn't answer, keeping a neutral face.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"
"I didn't want to worry you any further especially since the condition you are in right now is my fault" The Pokémon said, head lowering.
"No." Making the frog pokemon shocked.
"Its not your fault. It's Team Flare's fault! You have nothing to apologize for" Ash declared.
Greninja ignored Ash's words.
"Team Flare has come after me which means they will inevitably come after you if they aren't already…so please just…run away from this region and save yourself-"
"What are you talking about? You are my friend! I won't abandon you at your time of need" Ash said, determined. "I will find you, Greninja…and I will save you from them"
"Its way too risky!" Greninja yelled angrily.
"When has anything about us not been risky?" argued back Ash.
However before they can argue further, both of them notice how the water was slowly evaporating, the blue dim light increasing in brightness.
"Whats…going on..?"
"It seems like our time in this link has reached an end…" Greninja eyes widen. His body started to glow brighter as well "My physical body is waking up…"
"Ash…listen to me. There is something you must know-"
"Greninja, wait…!" Ash yells out as he reaches for the pokemon's hand as it fades out completely and the place explodes in a light blue light.
Ash woke up, panting. His face and body covered in sweat. He tries to focus his vision but everything seems hazy. Out of pure instinct, he tries to sit but as he does he suddenly feels very light headed and a pressure at his chest growing, making him almost fall back before immediately using his arms as support, which struggle to bear his own weight.
As his vision cleared, Ash failed to recognize where he was, causing his anxiety to rise.
"Pikapi!"
That was the sound which brought him back to his senses. Pikachu pawed on his trainer's stomach as it slipped into his lap possibly as he woke up. Concern and worry written all over its face. Ash then realizes that Lucario was firmly holding his back, giving him support, having a similar expression like Pikachu. His other pokemon; Talonflame, Snivy, Gible nestled around him.
"Pikachu…everyone…?" Ash breathed out.
This simple two words were enough to make the yellow mouse pokemon's gleam as it hugs its trainer in its own way with Ash returning the hug immediately and for the others to join in.
Feeling incredibly weak to support all their weight, Ash almost fell on his back immediately only to be gripped a bit tighter by Lucario who prevented him to fall, concerning the others and making them move back a bit to give him space.
"Pika…" Pikachu went to his trainer's side within seconds, his ears dropped down.
Ash carefully patted him and let out a small smile and looked at the others.
"Sorry-" Leading to a chatter of confused, surprised and sad cries which eventually lead the others snuggling closer to him.
Lucario however kept a close eye on his trainer. He felt a change in his aura just like when he first met Greninja moments before Ash passed out.
"Pikapi…Pika Chu…pi…?" Pikachu quietly asked earning himself confused stares and a surprised yet a shocked glance from Lucario who immediately seemed to understand and look at his trainer for an answer.
Before anyone can react or answer for Ash's case, a female voice rung out as the tent flap opened, revealing a girl with orange hair who looked at the pokemon pretty much cuddling their trainer.
"Ash! You are awake!" The water type gym leader called out in relief.
Behind her was a dark skinned but tall boy who sighed in relief.
"Misty? Brock?" Ash's vision blurred just for a second making him see completely different people for a split second before seeing the friends he knew for a long time.
"You had us very worried. Don't you ever do this again!" Misty said loudly keeping her hands on her hip, a tone of worry in her voice.
Ash flinched at her loud noise, his headache was increasing in her rising voice.
"What happened…?" He eventually asked hesitantly.
"You don't remember?" Brock asked gently.
"No…" Ash said after thinking for a minute.
"The last thing I remember is we were having dinner together and then…I woke up here" as he said this he slowly started to feel drowsy. He intentionally chose to skip the part where he met Greninja.
He didn't have the energy to explain them about it nor knowledge on how to start.
"You fell off the chair suddenly, unconscious.." Brock started.
"We all became immediately panicked. Your body was going cold fast too so we asked Talonflame to help…Pikachu accidentally shocked you too but you were absolutely unresponsive-" The last words came as a very soft whisper from Misty. Ash noticed Pikachu's ears dropped down as it looked at the ground but with what strength he had remaining he patted his partner's head affectionately, knowing it was truly just an accident during its own panic and that Pikachu would never intentionally try to hurt him.
"…I did a check up but nothing was wrong. You just seemed asleep . Despite a less than normal body temperature, you didn't seem to have any problem. However just two hours ago, your temperature spiked and when I measured it showed to be 102°C" Brock further explained.
"So I decided to run to the nearest Pokémon Center to get a medicine for fever while Brock stayed here to look after you. Your Pokémon refused to enter their pokeballs and have not moved by your side since the night and changing waters for putting the wet cloth on your head" Misty said as she looked at the 5 pokemon who immediately confirmed it with their own responses.
"Thank you everyone" Ash said with a smile on his face.
"How are you feeling right now?" Brock asked as he puts the back of his hand on Ash's forehead.
"Tired and a bit exhausted I guess…? I feel incredibly sleepy…"
"Hm. The fever seems to be subsiding. Say Ash, do you mind if I do a check-" Brock said as he took out his stethoscope from jacket only to stop as he realized Ash has closed his eyes and leaned over Lucario.
"Pikapi?!" Pikachu panicked.
Lucario's eyes widen. What if-
"Brock?! what is-"
"He's just asleep"
Brock concluded as he checked Ash with his trusty stethoscope and puts it aside, "His body just needs a bit more time to recover its stamina to break the fever, Sleep might be a good thing for him."
The others breathed a sigh of relief.
Lucario carefully and delicately sets his trainer down as if he were a fragile antique which could shatter at any moment while Gible and Pikachu grab the blanket from both sides and put it on him. Snivy meanwhile uses her vine whip to grab the wet towel, dip it in the water and then squeeze it tightly before softly setting it on her trainer's head.
"I will go change the water. It has gotten warm" Misty said as she touched the water bowl.
"I will go prepare some food for him. He will need a lot of energy" Brock said as he got up.
All of Ash's Pokémon (except Pikachu's) stomach grumble as they hear the word "Food".
Snivy and Lucario look away blushing refusing to acknowledge this moment out of pure pride while others sweat drop.
Brock sweat drops and laughs nervously, "Cmon you guys need something to eat too. No one ate last night due to all the panic"
It took almost 2 minutes of awkward silence to decide whose leaving until the youngest of them Gible gave in.
This was soon followed by Talonflame and then Snivy who was pretty much dragged out by the other two.
"Lucario? Pikachu? You guys not coming?" Brock asked as he opened the tent flap to exit.
This earned him a death glare from Lucario while Pikachu's cheeks flared in electricity.
"Okay okay! Come join when you like" Brock said as put both his hands in front of him defensively and left.
Pikachu looked at Lucario, a silent yet obvious question lingering in the air.
Lucario looked at Ash once who seemed blissfully unaware of the world yet when he looked at him more carefully he can see his aura shifting, changing and being sure, he nodded slightly making Pikachu even more concerned.
Drip
Ash's eyes open. He looks around only to understand immediately where he was.
This time though he felt no weakness and felt normal but it doesn't take much time for him to realize that his body is glowing in a blue hue of light similar to the water around him.
As he processed this, suddenly a torrent of water surrounds around him which part only to show an untransformed Greninja who says nothing but gaze at his trainer.
And that's when Ash feels a little weak and the blue light around him increasing in its dim intensity.
"Your body has found a way to self preserve its own necessary energy to not deplete itself to meet with the absurd demands I might be putting it on due to the forced bond caused by Team Flare" Greninja responded through the link as he knelt down beside his trainer. He spat the name of the organization in pure hatred and anger.
Ash tried to say something but the voice didn't come out. He found himself incapable to transferring his thoughts to Greninja as well.
"This is weird." He thought to himself.
Greninja quickly understands and explains "It is your aura. Don't try to fight it. It resonates within you and normally in our bond but since due to the chemicals on from my side has been exploiting your energy levels to a dangerously low level…your body's aura must have taken it as hostile and put a shield against it however since the aura also resonates within our bond, it let the bond connect but again separate you from the majority of the harsh effects while also having side effects"
Judging by the look Ash gave him, it was suffice to say for Greninja that he didn't get anything except a few parts about the aura.
Greninja realized it too but knew he didn't have much time to simplify and explain again.
Unknown to Greninja, Ash was feeling suffocating, a pressure around his chest growing . His aura was restricting him actively to even listen to what Greninja was saying and worst part is, he can't say it out or telepathically like he normally does in their link as well.
It was safe to say that Greninja wasn't feeling what he was feeling and the bond has becoming somewhat…weak and that's when he saw his own body eventually fade.
"You are waking up in the real world" Ash managed to catch Greninja's voice which was becoming more and more distant.
".....but there is something you need to know. Ly-" Greninja's voice sounded urgent but before Ash could hear the full sentence his world exploded in a bright white light.
Ash woke up with a start, the towel on his forehead falling off the side. He took in deep breaths, trying to calm his senses.
What was Greninja trying to say?
Could Lysandre be- no it can't be! I saw him fall to his death myself-
Lucario and Pikachu immediately woke up from their positions upon hearing the sounds.
"Pikapi!" Pikachu cried out as he jumped on to his lap, pawing at its trainer worriedly. Ash stroked it's back as he gained a grip on reality.
Pikachu and Lucario look at him with concern and worry but also an unasked question and statement which Ash understood at once.
"Its Greninja"

I hope this chapter was interesting!! Gonna post chapter 3 soon ^_^

Chapter Text
Ash ran as fast as he could.
He needed to inform Professor Sycamore right then and there about the impending doom.
"Ash, hold on a second!" Misty panted as she finally stopped and bent over to catch her breath. Brock eventually joining her who decided to sit on the ground entirely.
Ash stopped and looked over. He knew he shouldn't push them to their extreme and that they needed an explanation bigger than just "Greninja has been captured by Team Flare along with Zygrade's core. We need to inform this to the Professor and Kalosian Authorities". His rotom-phone wasn't connecting to any network which restricted him from not only using the GPS map to get to Lumiose City but also not allowing him to call any of his friends from the region.
He also knew he was running out of time.
Lysandre being alive or not (which he isn't), he knew even one Zygrade core at Team Flare's hand could mean huge trouble for the whole region and the world.
Both of his friends walk up to him slowly and then suddenly Misty bursts in anger who grabs Ash by his collar "Hey what's the big idea?! You suddenly feel all well, get up and say something along the lines of Greninja and a Zygrade Core being captured by this Team Flare and then start running!!! Care to explain before planning to run another marathon?!?!"
Ash was startled but said nothing in reply meanwhile Pikachu climbed down his shoulders and on the ground trying calm the red-haired girl down.
Brock immediately grabs her shoulders in an attempt to pull her away "Calm down Misty! Let's just talk through this first okay?" as Misty almost kicks Ash who dodges at the last moment.
Brock looks at Ash directly, "She's right though, Ash. Please explain what you said back at the camp before running."
Ash casts his eyes down and then takes a deep breath and lets it out. He knew he needed to confess sooner or later anyway.
"Okay. But let's talk while walking; that way we will cover the distance while also you get your answers" Ash says neutrally, his face devoid of emotion. He starts to walk forward while the others a little surprised at his stance.
It was very unusual to see him act without showing any type of emotion.
Misty and Brock looked at carefully and started to walk along. They kept quiet however waited for Ash's explanation intently. Pikachu's ears were slightly drooped down since it could sense Ash's growing uneasiness.
Ash could almost feel their stares and sighed quietly as he began, "Back when I was traveling in the Kalos region, I caught a Froakie-"
As he said this, coincidentally, an in-forest lake could be seen where a lot of water pokemon specifically Froakie and evolution forms could be seen playing.
As he looked over it and continued, "-and after a lot of training and time together, we bonded and overtime, it evolved into a Greninja. When we got fired up in battling…"
He looked over the blue, cloudless sky as he continued, "It was like I became Greninja and Greninja became me. We battled together in the Kalos League…"
Ash turned to look back at his friends and asked, "Have you heard of the Kalos Crisis?"
Surprised at the question, Misty and Brock remained quiet for a few seconds before answering.
"Yeah…It was all over the news that some plants caused outrage in the region" Misty admitted.
"Some weird species of plants started to grow and cause chaos over the whole city of Lumiose…thats what the news coverage said pretty much" Brock replied.
To say Ash felt very surprised and shocked would be an understatement. Even Pikachu was a little shocked.
"Seriously? They censored Team Flare out of the whole news??" Ash thought as he tried his best to subdue his emotions from bursting out.
He was almost impressed at how the Kalosian Authorities managed to cover-up perhaps the biggest attempt of genocide on humanity or at the very least, an International emergency which was supposedly broadcasted worldwide.
"...Was 'Team Flare' even mentioned?" Ash asked baffled.
"...No- But a few trainers who came from Kalos region into my gym seem to compare my Gyarados with a 'crazy' guy from the team you mentioned" Misty replied after thinking for a bit.
"I heard about Team Flare when I visited Kalos myself. Outside of that, absolutely nothing" Brock gravely supplied.
Ash sighed, he really didn't like the information he learnt right now.
"How can they keep such an atrocious act towards humanity under wraps?!"
He didn't understand govermental politics behind the 'censorship' but knew this wasn't right.
People should know about the devastating mistakes done by other people which are bound to leave a mark in history and so that in the future, no one tries the same stunt.
He continued on the forest path, others walking side by side, waiting for a reply from his side.
He looked down and then up in the sky and then started, "...Just moments after the league concluded, Team Flare showed up…Lead by a crazy maniac who wanted nothing but to destroy this world and create a new one using the Zygrade Core they captured…"
Misty's eyes widen as she puts the pieces together. Brock felt the growing unease Ash was exhibiting but let the other boy continue.
"That Zygrade core was enough to bring those frenzy plants to life and wrecked destruction all over the region, in which Lumiose City ended up getting the most damage and harm done to it."
He looked at Pikachu whose grip on his shoulder seemed to increase.
Ash knew what his partner was remembering. He knew all too well what it was thinking and he felt the same.
"Fortunately, we somehow stopped the fight but the plants still were a huge problem in the region so the Zygrade Cores asked Greninja to stay back and protect the region" Ash concluded.
The Kanto gym leaders were quiet out of sheer shock, not knowing what to say.
Misty was the one who broke the silence.
"But how do you know that Greninja and the Zygrade core are captured…?"
"Because he showed me the whole thing" Ash's eyes harden as he accidentally slips up.
Misty looks at him concerned yet with skepticism.
"No matter how far we are, I can always feel Greninja. Its almost a special bon-"
"It could just have been...just a bad dream, you know." She interrupts trying to rationalize.
"Misty-" Brock tries to stop her after observing everything.
"You can think of me as a liar if you want. But I know what I know" Ash said in a low voice before he increased his speed of walking, getting further and further away from his companions, clearly not wanting to talk anymore.
"Pika! Pikapi!!" Pikachu cried out as it rushed to his trainer.
It didn't take Misty much time to understand how dismissive and rude she possibly could have sounded to his worries, she runs after him "Ash! wait that's not what I-"
Brock shakes his head before running to catch up with the two.
Ash started running, completely ignoring Misty's calls.
"How could she act like that? Do I look like a liar to her?"
Suddenly he feels a weight jump onto his right shoulder, where he finds his partner, who grabbed his shoulder tightly, giving it a worried look.
Ash decided to ignore that. The sooner he got into the city, the better. He would get some answers to his load of questions.
"Pika!!" Pikachu exclaimed, pointing its paws to the side.
Ash stops and looks at the side and immediately his eyes widen in shock and alarm as he gasps.
This part of the forest's grass, plants and trees were turning completely black, crumbling away into dust at the faintest wind. The plants were dying and looking withered, some looking outright burnt. The trees looked like they could fall at any minute. Worst part was, this wave of destruction seemed to spread further and contaminate the nearing grounds, killing the natural life along with it.
"It looks very much the same like when Yveltal attacked-" Ash thought to himself as he remembered the painful scene seemed to coincide with what he was seeing today.
Misty and Brock catch up to him and witness the destructive scenes themselves. Their reaction similar to Ash's.
"Wh- What is happening to the forest?" Misty asked fearfully.
Brock bent down wearing a white glove in one of his hands and tried to picked one of the 'contaminated' plant only for it to crumble into nothing just upon touch.
Before he could say anything else, a huge red-black vine bursted out of the ground, followed by three more growing from the sides and aimed straight for Ash and Pikachu's direction in almost lightning speed. The said trainer was too much caught up in the moment's shock to utter a command or do something to defend himself.
However a certain mouse pokemon reacted immediately. Pikachu jumped and released a powerful thunderbolt, pushing away the vine as far as it could.
Finally snapping back to reality, Ash shook his head and concentrated. "Thanks buddy" he remarked.
"Pika Pikachu!"
"Starmie, use water gun on it!" Misty cried out as she threw her pokeball which made the water type pokemon free and spring into action and charging the move.
"Crobat go!" Brock lets the bat pokemon join the battle. "Use Whirlwind on the vine!"
Both Starmie and Crobat charge their attacks at the same time, creating a powerful fusion of a move which pushed the vine further back.
However much to their surprise, the Vine retaliates immediately and harshly slaps Crobat and Starmie back together making them hit against each other until getting slammed into a nearing tree making both of them faint immediately. This makes Misty and Brock sweat a bit but they immediately return their mons into their pokeballs. Before they could draw out another pokemon, the vine aims directly at them.
"Pikachu, iron tail!" Ash commands.
Pikachu charged with the attack, effectively pushing the vine back while also slashing through the upper part of it. But the vines didn't stop and lashed out at their direction again.
"Steelix, defend with dragon breath!" Brock says as he throws another pokeball revealing the giant steel pokemon who charged up the move and fired, showing a little struggle to keep the vines at bay which despite the direct hit continued to push forward.
"Pikachu use thunderbolt to strengthen the move!"
Pikachu immediately nods and releases a powerful wave of thunderbolt, pushing the vines, making them slowly curl backwards but still remarkably pushing against it and retaliating some of it back to the pokemon who have to move away at the last minute to dodge it.
"Gyarados, come on out!" Misty says as she opens her pokeball, revealing the giant creature who was residing inside.
"Use Flame Thrower near the roots to burn them off!" She commands immediately.
The Pokémon obeys and does so however just like Pikachu and Steelix's move, it throws it back only for the water type to dodge at the last second.
"They weren't this resilient back when I battled it with Greninja and Lucario.." Ash remembers as he plans on his next move, his attention diverting as he analyzes the situation in front of him.
"We need a plan!!" She yells.
"How is that so powerful? How could the moves do so little damage to it?!" Brock shouts as yet one more dragon breath was shrugged off completely.
He notices how exhausted Pikachu looks after using that many thunderbolts in a row as well as the others who were showing signs of tiredness after being brutally slapped by the wicked plants while also using their attacks.
And that's when Ash suddenly remembers.
"Of Course! They are strong against special attacks but not that great against physical ones…that's why Pikachu's iron tail did damage…so for getting rid of them they need to cut right through it in one go! Just like Greninja's cut"
"Guys! Attack with all the physical moves you got!" Ash cries out.
The others, though a little surprised at the specific request, listened anyway.
"Gyarados, use Crunch!"
"Steelix, Iron tail!"
"Pikachu, you too!"
Together, the three attacks completely ripped off one of the vines, which fell lifelessly on the ground. However, the other three vines were much more flexible, and moved out of the way.
"Misty, you take the vine at the left from its roots. Its the one connecting the other two. Brock take the one at the right, it's the one lashing out the most! I will take the middle and distract it" Ash said declaring his plan.
The others wasted no time and commanded their pokemon as such.
Just as said by the young champion, the vines was soon almost incapacitated as Misty's Gyarados used a combination of Crunch and Hyper Beam at its very stem while Brock's Steelix wasting no time immediately cut of a huge part of the vines by using its iron tail move while Pikachu neatly cut off the vines from the center. This effectively killed the Vine into nothing which started after dying immediately starts turning into a deep red dust blown away by the wind.
"That was scary" Misty said to no one in particular.
"These are even scarier in real life…" Brock absent mindedly said as he took out Steelix's pokeball and returned it in. "You did an amazing job." He said to the pokeball which moved slightly.
"Thank you for helping us Gyarados, you deserve some rest" Misty said as she recalled her Gyarados.
Ash silently watched them as Pikachu returned back on his shoulder, looking at its trainer worriedly.
"Hey Brock, how far are we from reaching Lumiose City?" He asked, getting slightly surprised looks at his unphased behavior.
"Um let's see.." Brock quickly drew put his old trusty map and read through it carefully while Misty tried to peak into it from the sides, standing on her toes.
"There's a pokemon center after 5 miles and 20 miles after that… We should the city reach by tomorrow afternoon" Brock said as he folded his Map.
"Then let's get started" Ash said with a small smile as he started to walk further.
However as he did, he felt a slight pain at the side of his head. Involuntarily, he massaged it with his hand.
Pikachu let out a worried cry from his shoulders to which Ash just let out a soft smile, the type of smile one gives to tell "I am fine".
Since the other two companions knew him for a while, they didn't fail to notice the situation. They quickly increased their pace and walked by his side, earning themselves a look of surprise from Ash who chose to say nothing and continue walking.
Unbeknownst to them, a small spider like machine with a camera watched them. It started to become transparent and eventually completely invisible to normal vision. It moved along the branch of a dead tree.
Using its lenses, it zoomed in on the group, and then specifically the boy with a Pikachu.
A red light blinked at the side of its machinery and it slowly moved back until it could be seen no more.
Notes:
Do you guys remember the flying robot/gadget thing which stalked on Latias and Ash back in the "Pokémon Movie: Heroes"? The spider like machine which is secretly spying on the trio is an inspiration from it!
As for the turning transparent and then invisible, imagine it getting invisible like Latias does in this series "Aim To Be A Pokémon Master" or well the Heroes movie.
Anyway, I hope this chapter was an interesting and entertaining read! :D
You could say it was like a filler- but trust me, I am trying to push a certain narrative through this lol
It would be worth it by the end!I will update soon!! :) See yall in the next chapter!
Chapter Text
Ash blinked slowly as he opened his eyes.
Darkness.
That's the only thing he saw. No light whatsoever.
"Where am I?" He thought to himself.
He felt very light. Like he was floating. He couldn't even feel himself . His senses seemed incredibly dulled.
"Whats going on?" He asked himself as his consciousness grew.
He noticed that the place was silent. No voice or sound.
Despite it being like a dark void, it was comfortably warm. It almost reminded him of something but he couldn't put his finger on it.
As he became more and more aware, the void started to shift.
Drip
A sound so loud yet so relieving and familiar.
Ash's eyes widen as the void slowly transforms into a beautiful clear night sky right after the sound with thousands of stars and a full moon which casted a faint light all around as gentle breeze blew by which lightly brushed his hair.
The scenery calmed Ash yet at the same something bothered him.
A feeling which nags him when he is late or forgets something.
Despite everything being so scenic, he felt uncomfortable for some reason.
He felt something was missing. Someone was missing or was it more than one person?
A slight headache throbbed making him squeeze his eyes shut and put his hands on the side of his head.
The scenery dissipated turning into the previous dark endless void, all the light and sound gone.
As the feeling of tightness around his head increased; Ash saw glimpses of his life at rapid speeds, all the memories flooding back to him within mere moments. His awareness returning completely.
However before he could question anything; his body started to emit a soft blue glow, illuminating the void to a certain extent. A tightness around his chest grew as the glow gradually increased.
Ash looked at himself in awe and shock.
"It must be my aura…" He thought to himself.
Suddenly, a part of the light which illuminated the void concentrated itself into creating a thin string like beam which shot across the void like an arrow on its own to the other side.
Ash saw a similar beam shoot towards him from the opposite side from where it seems to have it's real origin, he was too shocked to think or comment anything.
However his attention was brought to the other light beam which came towards his direction, at the very far end of it, Ash could see a silhouette of someone or something moving towards him.
Squinting his eyes a bit, Ash saw a figure in shadows with red glowing marks over its body with a shuriken like thing on its back. It looked almost like a…. Greninja-
Ash's eyes widen. This discovery relieved yet scared him. He dashed towards the direction of the Ninja pokemon, the string being his guide which too struggled to meet with the other.
A quick thought crossed his mind.
"Why did I feel fearful? ….It never happens between us-"
And that's when he stops only to see the light string collapsing. He also sees the Frog pokemon still covered in darkness, still in its transformed form; now completely still as if mimicking his own moves.
His instincts were screaming at him that something was wrong and he subconsciously took two steps back only for the other figure to take two steps forward.
The distance between them almost obsolete.
"I cannot… resist it…any longer-" The shadowy Frog pokemon choked out.
"Please…I was this close to-" He doubled down as if in pain.
Not caring of anything else, Ash rushed forward to help his old friend but however the distance between them started to increase as Greninja raised one of its shaking hands.
"Greninja-"
"Your aura…it seems to-" Greninja weakly coughed out.
As Ash opened his mouth to call out the pokemon, the previously collapsed strings resurfaced and joined together.
Ash felt a surge of power within his veins and Greninja started to feel much stronger as well however as it felt more healthy, Ash started to feel drowsy and exhausted.
The blue light around him, warming him as it increased in intensity. It didn't decrease his drowsiness or exhaustion but the surroundings started to blur…along with sounds.
He could feel someone supporting him over and he knew who it could be.
"Greninja…I wanna ask-" he weakly said, his eyelids becoming heavier by the second and hearing becoming more distant.
He could hear his friend say something in urgency, he knew the pokemon was yelling and shaking him to keep him awake just for a few mere moments but consciousness… just like at every integral moment of his life…left him.
He felt a mixture of guilt, anger and regret for this is maybe the third time? they are meeting and yet again he has to leave the connection before he could hear the Ninja Pokemon's words fully.
His world grew darker and darker till he could see no longer.
The first thing he saw as he opened his eyes was a wooden ceiling and with his vision coming in and out of focus, it made him feel nauseous and close his eyes. His head pained as he felt terribly weak.
When he opened his eyes again, he noticed a yellow blur sitting on his chest, it took a few more seconds till his vision and recognition settled in.
"Pikachu" he whispered.
The pokemon gave him a look of concern and worry and let out a cry expressing its emotions.
The trainer looked around his surroundings, he was asleep on a… couch? next to a window which filled the cabinet room with a calming glow of moonlight.
He saw Misty passed out on the other side of the couch while Brock took out his sleeping bag and slept on the ground due to having no space for him.
He furrowed his brows trying to remember.
"Oh that's right…" He thought to himself, "This is the 2nd Pokémon Center Stoppage we were supposed to take…and there were no guest rooms available we were given the couches and sofa for staying the night-"
"Pikapi…Pika Pikachu" The mouse pokemon softly said as it jumped off him and sat beside him. It looked frantic…its voice scared, worried and concerned.
"What is it-" Ash tried to ask as he sat up with all his strength and leaned against the couch for support before he noticed himself.
He was glowing in a blue light.
And then he remembered glimpses of the conversation however to his dismay all of the memories of it were disappearing by the second.
"Was that…really a dream or a link?" He debated himself internally, his anxiety growing by the second.
He tried to remember but it only increased the glow around him, making him even more panicked.
"This…has never happened before-"
He could hear the cries of concern, his partner was making as it climbed back to his lap and pawed at his stomach.
"I need to…calm down…"
He then took in a deep breath in and out and continued doing so till he felt a little calmer and the light around him decreasing till it vanished entirely.
The headache still lingered and he felt much more exhausted now. However, he didn't fail to observe his other two friends who were still fast asleep.
He has never felt more thankful at that moment. How would he even describe this to them? They already were giving him wary looks earlier.
As he thought, he looked down at Pikachu who looked at him intently with a sad expression, ears drooped down.
Ash gave his small smile as he gently scratched its ears in response, trying to cheer it up which it did eventually but a look of concern still plastered onto its face. He knew he can't fool or divert his partner's attention especially when it came to his matter.
"A walk outside? Whaddya say buddy?" He whispered, making sure no one awakens from his voice.
Pikachu let out a small "Pi" of approval.
It took a little will and strength to get up and even then he stumbled much to the mouse pokemon's worry who immediately ran to his side although refusing to sit on his shoulder at his weak state.
Regardless, they tip toed their way out of the room and out of the center.
Ash felt a little better, the fresh air made his nausea almost go away completely.
Pikachu walked by his side, looking at his trainer occasionally.
After a little more walking, they found the perfect spot for Ash to sit or lay comfortably on; in Pikachu's case.
The center was situated over a small hill slope which was covered by soft grass, it not only gave comfort but a little leverage over the ground too.
Ash watched the vast sky. The sky was very clear today and innumerable stars lit up the sky. The moon casted her calming shine over the whole place while gentle breeze blew creating a sweet environment.
Ash almost felt nostalgic to the days where he used to star gaze along with Clemont, Bonnie and Serena back at the days when he traveled Kalos.
He never truly was the one to compliment the beauty of nature. In all his journeys, he was too focused on battling, taking care and making his own pokemon stronger or collecting gym battles. It was after his loss at the Unova league that he started to pay attention to everything else. It was Kalos where he picked up the hobby of star gazing.
"...Pika?" Pikachu asked, breaking the long silence.
"The night sure is beautiful huh, Pikachu?"
"Pika-chu!"
"Time sure flies" Ash started. "It almost feels like yesterday that we were traveling Kalos"
"Chu.." Pikachu looked at his trainer intently, knowing that was not it.
"I kinda miss those days when we could travel freely without a care to the world" Ash closed his eyes, slowly laying down on the grass.
A gentle breeze blew by, ruffling the short asleep plants on the ground.
Ever since he became a champion, life has been so different . People look at him like some kind of big celebrity… he was a bit shameful to admit it but when he first started his journey in Kanto, he probably would have been much satisfied at the celebrity status he has now and maybe have been very cocky about it. He even show off-ed his 2 gym badges that he didn't even win fair and square… but now? He just doesn't care anymore. Fame was never really something he wants or dreams of.
His dream is to become a Pokémon Master.
Life has been a bit different too. He had to attend three meetings for being the first and current Alolan Champion after his win. Then the press, media coverage…it was exhausting in a way. He felt like he was losing purpose and that's when he decided he needed a breath of fresh air and set out on an aimless journey to escape all the pressure around him and most importantly….to understand his dream.
Ash opened his eyes again, just in time to catch a glimpse of a shooting star.
"I wish we could just travel without a care of the world like old times" Ash commented.
Earning a silent "Chaa" from his partner.
His expression slightly changed into a frown as he continued to look at the star-lit sky, "I'm a little scared" he softly whispered.
Pikachu's ears twitching as a response. It stood up and went closer to his trainer.
"With all that is happening…with Greninja, with me, with us. I just…don't know what to do" He admitted, Pikachu's ears drooped down. "I hope Greninja is okay" He said with a wistful face.
"Pika...Pikachu" Pikachu tried to comfort.
"I'm sorry." He murmured. "I don't know why I'm such a disaster magnet" He kept looking at the sky as Pikachu kept saying something in protest.
But what could have been a somewhat relaxing journey where he tries to realize his own dream…turned into yet another disaster. Now that Team Flare has captured Greninja and one of the Zygrade cores. He had a sinking feeling in his gut.
As much as he hated to admit it but they were very efficient at their job and there was practically nothing to defend the other Zygrade cell against them other than it defending itself.
In all this madness, the only thing left to happen is Lysandre coming back ali-
Ash shook his head.
It can't be .
He saw him fall to his death with his own eyes back then and the one thing he has learnt over the course of his journey is Dead People don't come back. Unless you are in Alola but even then you just reunite with their souls for the limited time and that's not the point.
Drip
His eyes widen slightly as he looks around instantly. Pikachu went quiet as he observed his trainer.
"Did you hear that, Pikachu?"
Pikachu tilts his head and looks at Ash confusingly and shook his head.
"It was too loud to be not heard…" Ash thinks to himself. However within a few seconds, he remembers the resonance of the sound.
"The link…" Ash whispers to himself.
A man with frenzied orange hair stood in a middle of a room filled with all sorts of gadgets and a large screen showing different analytical data which he observed keenly sitting on his chair.
An automated door opened and a person saluted and stood upright. It was a woman in an orange uniform, wearing orange-ish sunglasses and had a weird hairstyle.
"Update on subject 19XYZ07"
"The subject is stable now, sir. But it has been concluded that it has somehow grown a resistance against the chemical and as of now, it is nothing but a mere provocation to it with no real results"
The man sighed. "Dismissed."
The woman nodded slightly and went outside the room, the automated door closing behind her with a hiss.
The man looked over his screen again, a picture of a boy holding the World Coronation trophy along with his Pokémon showed on the screen, along side more pictures depicting a huge aura sphere held by the Lucario and the trainer mimicking his actions and even more analytical data.
Lysandre traced the scar mark along his cheek. "Perhaps I was right…" He said to himself. "Looks like you are going to pay me a visit sooner than I anticipated" He grinned.
A beep sound was heard from a rotom phone laid on the desk beside him. He grabbed it and tapped the screen a few times only to find what he was looking for. His smirk growing larger.
On the screen, there was a picture of Ash and a boy who clicked a picture of him and the current champion who nervously smiled with the Pikachu on Ash's shoulder giving an irritated look to the camera. The picture was posted on social media just three minutes ago. A caption was written under the picture.
"OMG! THE WORLD CHAMPION AT ROUTE 4 IN KALOS?! #Starcrossed #Todaysmyday #Imgonnabetheno1….."
Lysandre plugged in a wire in the device and clicked a few buttons on his holographic keyboard screen. His screen showed the location of where the photo was taken and at which time, confirming the claims made by the poster.
He proceeds to press a few more keys, which revealed many clips and photos of Ash traveling with Misty and Brock through forests, talking about Lumiose City and eventually entering a Pokèmon Center. Another tab opened beside the current one, which pinpoints where the photos and videos were taken.
"Next stop is Lumiose City then, hm?" Lysandre said to himself.
"Technology really does make the world a small place."
Notes:

Chapter Text
"And that's how I got Gyarados's mega stone" Misty completed as Ash stared at her in awe and Brock listened quietly as he read the road direction manual.
"Thats so awesome, Misty! I had no idea you can fish out key stones" Ash's eyes sparkled in astonishment and fascination.
"Hehe, I guess you say it was linked to us by the red string of fate" Misty gleamed.
Ash and gang were a few hours away from reaching Lumiose City therefore to pass the time, they started to talk on different things. Ash felt a bit feverish and weak with a light headache lingering and used the conversations to distract himself from it. He cannot afford to tell his friends about last night's… incident .
"How did you get your key stone though? I bet your story is going to be way more interesting" Misty asked tilting her head.
"I was given the Keystone glove by Korrina" Ash replied as he absent mindedly scratched behind Pikachu's ear who leaned more towards the touch.
"Korrina? Isn't she a gym leader of Kalos?" Brock asked.
Before Ash could answer a loud noise was heard which was followed by a sparkling, almost pinkish wind rising in the sky with fire surrounding it and disappearing into nothing moments later.
This alerted the group.
"What was that?!" Misty yelled.
"Let's check it out" Ash said as others nodded and ran.
As they neared, they saw it was a rather open ground in the forest where a person and three other pokemon stood who practiced their moves on the command of the trainer. Ash's eyes widened.
"Alright Delphox, you gotta jump and twirl and then use Mystic fire and hold it using psychic! Pancham, as soon as Delphox jumps follow it up with Stone edge!" A girl wearing a black turtle neck top with a red and white plaid skirt commanded, her pokemon giving her affirmative cries.
They did as told and a fire blast was perfectly stilled in between the blue rocks, looking almost like a flower.
"Now! Sylveon use fairy wind!! A bit less strong this time!"
"Syl!" The Pokémon cried out as it jumped and twirled right under the fiery flower and launching a fairy wind at it, making the fire go upwards and disperse, creating sparks all around as the stones themselves broke into millions of pieces producing blue sparkles all around.
"We did it!" She cheered as the Pokémon rushed towards her in a hug.
She heard clapping and that's when she grew conscious of her surroundings, breaking free from the hug and looking behind, her eyes widened.
"That was awesome, Serena!" Ash cheered as he came near her, shocking both Misty and Brock who followed him.
"Ash?" Serena asked, a smile growing on her face. She walked towards him, her pokemon following her closely.
"Didn't expect to see you here of all places" Serena softly laughed. "How have you been?" She asked. "And most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS! You really did it!!" Her eyes sparkled as she continued, "I saw your match on TV, it was truly a spectacle"
"Thanks!" Ash smiled. "How are your contests going?"
Serena thought for a moment and then replied "Oh, they are just going fine" She laughed.
Both of them seemed eager to converse further but were reminded of others presence as Misty cleared her throat.
"Oh right…! Guys, this is Serena! We use to travel together back when I was participated in the Kalos league" Ash indicated with his hand. "And Serena meet Misty and Brock! They are my traveling companions"
"Its an honor to meet you" Serena bowed.
"Pleased to meet you too" Misty said as Brock nodded.
Serena looked at Misty carefully and asked in an uncertain voice, "Are you Misty from the Cerulean City gym?"
Misty's eyes widen ever so slightly.
"Ehhhhhh really?!" Misty clamoured.
"Mm! Your Underwater Ballet as a mermaid is still used as an popular example for performing under water!" Serena replied as she took out a guide book and opened the page which showed a picture of Misty posed as a mermaid and performing as a mermaid along with other pokemon, playing alongside her.
"But it was so long ago!" Misty said bewildered.
"Looks like you got famous as well" Ash chuckled.
"Pi-Pikachu!" Pikachu agreed.
"I got this guide from a friend of mine who participated with me in my last contest" Serena stops for a second and puts the guide back into her bag and continues walking with others. "It's to be incredibly popular in Hoenn but doesn't seem to have any publication in Kalos…." She trailed off "But I must say it has a lot of useful tips for performing in it too!"
"This is so embarrassing- I thought that ballet was a forgotten part of the past" Misty said crestfallen as she comically bends down with her arms hanging forward dejectedly.
"Its okay Misty, it was an amazing show anyway" Brock reassured.
"Yeah, Brock is right. So many people look up to that performance as a standard of performing. You should be proud!" Ash walked in front of her and said cheerfully.
"Yeah! And it was an unique performance! Only ever somewhat replicated by Gym Leader Nessa from Galar in her commercial!" Serena soothed.
"I guess you are right.." Misty said with a small smile on her face.
"So Nessa is Galar's gym leader?" Ash asked. "I never really got the chance to meet or know her"
At this, Brock took his eyes off his map guide and looked at Ash directly and posed dramatically as he grabbed Ash by his shoulders, "You don't know THE NESSA?!"
"Uhm-" Ash sweat dropped as Misty threw Brock an annoyed glare while Serena looked at the situation, confused.
Flowers appear near Brock's side as his eyes begin to sparkle somehow (even though they are closed?) "She's a gym leader AND a model!" He started as he flipped through the book he was holding at lightning speed and opened a page, filled with pictures of the said gym leader.
Brock clasped both of his hands in front of him, daydreaming "Too bad she went on a break for over an year! Otherwise I would have asked her hand in-"
Immediately a pokeball burst open from his side, revealing an irritated Croagunk emerged who immediately used Poison jab on his back while Misty tugged his ears dragging him away, effectively stopping him.
"Yea yea yea we get your fascination and all but get walking already" she said to the now paralyzed Brock who had a single tear hanging on his cheek while Croagunk looked to the other side in clear annoyance.
Serena and Ash looked at eachother and nervously laughed.
Some things never change.
A little while later and a bit more banter, Serena eventually asked Ash, "So Ash, what brings you to Kalos? You never answered earlier"
Ash looked at her and replied smiling, "You know Professor Oak right? He gave me a parcel to deliver to Professor Sycamore"
Serena looked a bit surprised. "You too?"
"Wait…he gave you a parcel too?"
"No no no!" Serena shook her hands in front of her. "Its just that I was given a parcel by Professor Birch and was asked to deliver it to Professor Sycamore" She confirmed.
"Woah then we can travel together for a while then!" Ash supplied happily to which Serena beamed with pleasure.
"Though to be honest, someone else was supposed to deliver it but since she had work and I was returning to Kalos anyway. I got the responsibility" Serena fidgeted with her fingers.
"Even so at least we get to travel together!" Ash said as laughed softly.
The other two trainers didn't want to interrupt or disturb the union so they just watched them silently.
"How long till we reach Lumiose City?" Misty asked Brock.
"About 2-3 hours more if we keep up this speed" Brock replied as he closed his guide book.Ash and Serena listened and nodded. Afterwards, they traveled for a while, the group talking about dreams, ambitions, Water Pokèmon, Rock Pokèmon, Eevee, and many other topics. Throughout the discussion, Ash felt a growing pain in his head, and used the discussion as a distraction.
He grabbed the yellow pokémon from the side to prevent it from falling as it lost balance while climbing down from his head to his right shoulder. His headache was growing by the second and he visibly winced once but re-adjusted his cap so that no one notices which thankfully worked.
At some point, Serena and others must have noticed he wasn't talking which was very unusual since he was a talkative person.
"Um… Hey Ash?" Misty nudged.
"Oh! Um, hey" Ash startled which concerned the others and even Pikachu who woke up and looked at him worriedly.
"Are you feeling alright?" Brock gently asked.
With things that happened two days ago, he and Misty had been cautious and were ready to take action incase his health worsened.
"Sorry…I must have zoned out!" Ash rubbed the back of his neck nervously as he nervously laughed.
Others didn't seem entirely convinced but they let it roll for now.
"So Ash where would you be going from here?" Serena asked changing topics.
Ash gave her a thoughtful look and looked down with a wistful face.
He seemed to think deeply and then shook his head at whatever silly thought came to his mind.
Misty and Brock exchanged a look at eachother while Serena looked more worried and confused.
"Ash?"
"I just…don't know" He replied with a bittersweet smile.
"Is something wrong?" Serena knew something was off. It almost felt like the time when he lost at the Snowbelle City gym.
He looked directly at her, "Yea…something I-"
As if right on queue, a reddish brown huge vine pushes itself up from the ground much to the surprise and shock of others who immediately took notice of it. However as others reached for their pokeballs within mere seconds, the vine directly aimed at Serena whose eyes widen as she watches the vine being literal inches away from hitting her, Misty tries to push her away but fails at reaching her new friend quick enough to move her away from harm. Serena tightly closes her eyes accepting her fate from the incoming hit.
"IRON TAIL!" Serena spots a yellow blur jump from her shoulders and hit away the vine away giving her time to move away.
"Keep pushing it back with thunderbolt!" Ash commanded Pikachu only for it comply immediately.
"You alright?!" Misty asked Serena with urgency who fell to her knees her eyes wide.
Brock quickly rushing to give the young girl support who keeps glancing once at Ash and then at the vines. It reminds her those buried yet vivid memories about the Kalos Cri -
She shakes her head and with a determined look on her face, she stands up and replies "Yea… I'm fine. But…where did these vines come from?!"
As soon as she says that, two more vines emerge from the back and strike at the trio. Luckily all of them dodge and throw out their pokemon to battle them.
"Pancham! I need your help!"
"Politoed, go!"
"Croagunk, help me out on this one!"
"Guys! Don't forget these vines only take damage from physical attacks!" Ash yells as Pikachu uses Iron Tail once again to slash through a vine that came way too close for comfort.
Serena nods briefly along with others who command their pokemon to use their respective attacks.
She definitely needs to ask him about all this later.
It took 4 long hours, but eventually the vines were dealt with. Somehow, the vines' durability had increased by a tenfold since they last encountered them.
Unfortunately, the vines' newfound strength left everyone's Pokèmon injured. Pikachu got it worse than anyone, as it's forelegs were sprained by the vines, and it couldn't even walk without immense pain. Brock managed to treat their Pokèmon as best he could with the resources available to him. By the time all was said and done, the sun had already set, replaced by a dark, cloudy sky.
"Maybe we should camp here. Its way too dark for us to travel safely now" Brock announced as he re-bandaged Pikachu's leg who winced in pain and tightly shut off his eyes, much to his trainer's worry who softly patted its head to comfort it as Brock handed over the pokemon to its owner.
"But those vines-" Misty interjected.
"Perhaps we can stay up in groups? One group sleeps and one group looks out and then we rotate. In case something goes wrong, we can alert the other group" Serena quickly proposed.
"Thats a great idea!" Brock remarked. "I'll get to making dinner then"
"Hm, sounds like a plan. We will set up the tents and dinner table" Misty got up and seeing her, Serena started to get up from her spot however continuing to look at Ash in concern who seemed to be thinking something deeply.
"Ash?" Misty asked when she realised the situation.
"I'lll be there in a few minutes" Ash replied in dull low voice, he added, "I feel tired, just give me some time."
Misty and Serena chose to remain silent at his words. Though none of them voiced it out but it was evident that they were getting more and more concerned about the boy's well being, some more than others.
Misty put her hand on Serena, prompting the girl to look at her. She then tilted her head towards the main camping site as she walked over in that direction.
Serena understanding what she meant to say, hesitated and looked at the camp and Ash, indecisive of what to do before eventually deciding to go towards the direction of the camping site.
She looked back at the boy a few more times as if still hesitant about her decision.
Now is not the time to ask.
Pikachu slowly opened his eyes looking at its trusted partner letting out a small smile,
"Pika Pikapi Pikachu~" It cooed as if saying its fine.
"Does it still hurt a lot?" Ash asked gently.
Pikachu quickly shook his head but at an attempt in moving, its bandaged leg pained again making it wince.
Ash looked down at the little pokemon with a guilty and sad look.
"It's my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you too much. Maybe the last batch of vines could have been better dealt by Lu-"
At this, Pikachu grumbled something, looking pretty angry. "Pikachu! Pika Chu Pikapi!" It angrily replied.
"Maybe but if I-" Ash tried to say only for Pikachu to interrupt, "PIKAPI!"
"Alright, Alright! I won't blame myself, okay?" Ash replied frantically, He knew better than to anger his pikachu.
At this both of their stomach grumbled at the same time who looked at each other sheepishly.
"Say we help prepare dinner and fix ourselves some food AND maybe then continue this talk?" Ash asked Pikachu who chirped somewhat happily in response as it still pretended to look annoyed.
Ash softly chuckled and started to get up while holding Pikachu in his arms. As soon as he stood up and took a few steps towards the main camp area, suddenly his vision blurred showing a seemingly whole different scenery with darkness everywhere save him, he held no Pikachu at his arms…but he was glowing again…but in red and a white searing pain at the back of his heading increasing in tenfold but due to the vision lasting only a few seconds, he couldn't look into much nor scream out in pain but it left him baffled and completely distracted, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. His eyes looked to have lost the light in them too.
"Pika Pi!" Pikachu cried out in concern, making Ash snap back to reality. The normal shine returning to his eyes.
"Huh? Oh, sorry. Got a little distracted!" Ash tried to brush off.
Pikachu didn't look convinced at all yet his trainer decided to ignore he had no way to explain the sudden experience. It was way too bizarre and made little sense but it was enough to give him another reminder of Greninja's worsening condition.
Red….could that red be-
"Ash! You coming or what?!" Misty yelled who have had enough of his 'sulking' as the other two put it.
"Yeah! I'll set the plates." Ash replied, rushing back to the area his companions rested at. A small basket with a soft blanket stuffed in it was kept around by Brock. Ash gently placed Pikachu in the makeshift bed and asked his friends and their Pokèmon to help it in case it needs something, to which they happily agreed.
When Ash reached the table area, he saw everything mostly done and wasted no further time to set the dishes.
"Where are Misty and Serena?" Ash asked realizing the absence of the two.
"They went to gather some wood from nearby areas a few minutes ago just incase we run short of them during the rest of the night" Brock replied as he continued to stir the curry he prepared.
Ash nodded and then took out the bowls for all the pokemon and kept them in their respective spots.
Even as he did all his chores, he couldn't get the vision out of his mind. It bugged him and he could almost feel the yellow rodent's gaze on him but didn't look back at it.
The dinner went relatively quietly with everyone doing a little small talk. The vibe was disturbed as Pikachu suddenly fell out of his basket and was panting lightly much to Ash and other's distress.
It turns out it had gotten a high fever from the pain of his leg and after Brock quickly took the issue in his own hands and treated the little pokemon, Pikachu got stabilised as the fever broke but leaving it thoroughly tired.
"We need to get Pikachu to a Pokemon Center for a check up. I have a bad feeling about this" Ash said as he held the asleep mouse pokemon wrapped in a blanket.
"We are only a couple hours away from the city. We should reach it by tomorrow afternoon if we start early in the morning" Serena declared as she scanned her device for the optimal paths.
"Well that settles that then" Misty said as she yawned. "Who is staying up for the first half for the night watch?".
She looks tired…
"I will stay up" Ash said immediately, grabbing everyone's attention. "I mean…I'm not feeling sleepy anyway so might as well stay up" He added, explaining.
"You don't have to- I can stay up for a couple of hours" Misty replied as she remembered Ash's poor health from just 1-2 days ago.
"No, it's fine! You could use some sleep" Ash insisted.
Misty said nothing in response except looked dead in his eye as if asking if that's the only reason.
"In that case, I'll-" Brock got interrupted.
"I'LL STAY UP" Serena enthusiastically voiced, making everyone look at her in utter surprise.
"Brock, you worked hard all day, you should get some rest." Serena pleaded.
"Besides me and Ash have some catching up to do!" She smiled in a mischievous sort of manner to which Ash looked at her, confused.
Brock and Misty looked at her and Ash more than twice and then looked at each other and shrugged.
"I can take care of Pikachu for the night if you want" Brock said as Ash looked at the sleeping pokemon.
"That would be awesome, Brock" Ash smiled exhaustedly, making the others worried since he too needed sleep urgently. As Ash was about to put Pikachu into the older boy's arms, the Pokémon shifted with a few electric sparks coming out of his cheeks as it tightly gripped Ash's shirt, making Brock go back.
Ash looked at Brock apologetically but Brock understood and took one step back.
"Wake us up after your shift" Misty said as she yawned once again and headed to her tent as Brock set his own sleeping bag out and went to sleep.
The campfire crackled softly.
The other two fell asleep soundingly a few hours ago while the other two stayed awake in an awkward hours long silence.
No one dared to say a word as if wanting the other to start the conversation first.
The sky has become less cloudy overtime revealing many twinkling stars that decorated it's realm.
The raven haired boy looked at the little pokemon in his arms, lost in deep thought.
After a while, the blonde girl noticed the campfire has gotten a lot smaller only for her to put in a few extra wood pieces for it to rejuvenate again. She watched intently as her own determination grew.
She finally decided to break the silence.
"The sky seems a little clearer now" Serena says, making Ash break from his train of thoughts and look at her and then the sky.
"Yeah, that's right" He replies back, a subconscious part of him making him move a little closer to her although barely noticeable.
"Remember all those nights we just use to stare at the sky? It makes me feel a little nostalgic" Serena said softly.
"Mhm. Those were some days. I miss them." Ash kept looking at the stars, a small smile forming on his face only to be slowly replaced by a frown as he once again thought something deeply. This didn't go unnoticed by Serena.
"I know the vines might have brought up some bad memories…" Serena said as she looked at the campfire, these words of her brought Ash back to full attention as he looked at her concernedly.
"...it did for me. I never really forgot about the crisis even at Hoenn…the memories kept coming back at one way or the other…I stopped keeping it as a secret and talked about it and…being honest, it didn't get better but it eased up. By a lot." She confessed. "Maybe…I figured that if you have something to say…you can tell it to me. You can trust me" Serena looked at Ash expectantly who turned away to look at Pikachu and then the skies again.
She knew he trusted her and that she didn't need to voice it out but she couldn't stop herself from not saying it.
She continued to look at him. A part of her knew he wouldn't answer back. He was too caring to share his own painful feelings yet so willing to help others even if that just meant listening to their pains.
Why is he so willing help others...but not himself?
"Maybe I should have given him some more time" She thought regretfully as a little more time passed.
The silence which followed was deafening and all the pokemon in the forest seemed to have chosen to not make any noise that night either.
Seconds turned into minutes and those minutes seemed like they turned into hours, Serena started to regret her words even more and looked at the sky in sadness and disappointment only for her to later check her phone to see its been 4 hours already.
She sighed as she bitterly smiled to herself and started to get up. It was time for the others shift.
"Serena.." A voice too familiar called, only for the girl to look at the person in shock and surprise.
"There is something you need to know" Ash said with his big eyes sparkling in emotion as if tears were threatening to spill yet so cold , emotionless and determined.
Her eyes widen ever so slightly.
Notes:
This chapter took me nearly 2 months to write, can you believe it?! Hahahahahaha
Well I hope the result was somewhat interesting!
The updates from here might get a little irregular because my school has started and I have finals on February and this is basically "escape the hell known as high school but need very good grades for getting a chance in getting the seat in college entrance exam and maybe then...get into college and this will determine whether you will get a job for your life" exam so yea... the pressure is incredibly high T-T)
Personally, I had fun writing this chapter and we can enter into the real plot line now that all the necessary filler is gone.
Initially, I was thinking of posting Chapter 6 along with this chapter but since that might take me an additional 1+ month to write with all the things I have had planned, I decided to post this chapter first lol
Welp, next chapter Ash and Gang meets the rest of the group and shenanigans should pursue~
And again, I would like to thank my friend @DropTheMike for his contributions towards this fic's chapter!!! He pointed out and re-wrote an entire paragraph worth of grammatical mistakes so I thank him whole heartedly!!
Ig this fic is technically no longer a "no beta read" lol (but hey, imma keep the tag cuz typos and a few errors can still slip up)
Did you guys find the light Bonnie reference I sprinkled in there? :D
Do let me know in the comments! (And don't forget to point out the line!l)See you all in the next chapter!
