“It won’t fit.” Izzy nudged the shelving unit and tapped the door frame of their coat closet. Ed made a noise from the living room that said that he was more focused on Breath of the Wild than whatever cockamamie plan Stede had cooked up.
Izzy had dutifully joined Stede at Target at 9 am on a Saturday while Ed was fast asleep. And Izzy didn’t mind, mostly, because Stede had turned their bungalow into a nice home. Also Stede bought him a bagel, and kissed him on the cheek, and Izzy had given in like a cat showing his belly.
Too bad the shelf was fucked.
Izzy had spent twenty minutes curled around the shelves on the floor trying to put the unit together while Stede “helped” by finding the wrong screws. If Stede didn’t have a mouth like a Hoover on him, Izzy might have been more annoyed.
Stede frowned. “It has to work. I haven’t been able to find the right loafer in weeks. You can’t pair the leather with linen. It’s an abomination.”
Izzy scratched his chin. Looked at the space. “It’ll fit in the closet. It’s the frame that’s the issue.”
Ed looked up from his game. “So just take the door off.”
Izzy looked at Stede. Stede looked at Ed.
“Ed, you’re a genius!” Stede clapped his hands together. “Israel, be a dear and get the tools?”
Izzy rolled his eyes but headed into the basement. Ten minutes later, the door was off, the shelf was in the closet, and Izzy was admiring his work.
Stede had settled into the couch with Ed’s feet in his lap. “Come rest,” Stede said. “We’ll finish it later.”
“I should clean up the packaging.”
“Get your ass over here, Iz,” Ed said.
Izzy gave in and settled in next to Stede. He grabbed a blanket and curled under Stede’s shoulder. Stede got the memo and snuggled him in close.
Izzy fell asleep as Stede stroked his hair while he read his book. Izzy could hear the soft sounds of Ed killing monsters from the end of the couch. It was nice. Nice to be loved. Nice to be with his people. Nice.
