Chapter Text
Renfield is nervous.
This admittedly isn't anything new, Renfield spends most of his time nervous rather than relaxed. But this time he wasn't nervous for the usual reason, that being Dracula, but because he and Rebecca were hanging out.
Renfield and Rebecca were just hanging out, there hadn't been any sign of Dracula for nearly two months, and yet Renfield's stomach was doing its best impression of a trash compactor.
Was this because Renfield had to tell Rebecca something important? Had one of them done something?
No.
Renfield is nearly sick with anxiety because they had been sitting on Renfield's second-hand couch doing separate things, Renfield trying out embroidery, Rebecca on her phone, and they hadn't spoken to one another for nearly forty minutes.
Weren’t friends supposed to talk to one another when they hung out? Had Renfield done something wrong? Is Rebecca bored? Is he supposed to initiate conversation? Fuck.
Normally Renfield wouldn't mind the quiet, but a lot of the books he had been reading mentioned engaging in meaningful conversations when being social in order to foster stronger positive relationships.
He’s about to do something, ask about the weather or Rebecca's sister or her job hunt, or possibly just start screaming, when Rebecca leans over to look at what he had been working on.
“Hey, that looks really good!”
“Is this normal?” Renfield blurts out before thinking.
Rebecca looks at him, eyebrow raised. “Uh, yeah, embroidery is pretty normal.”
“No, I mean like.” Renfield takes a deep breath. “I mean us, just sitting here silently. Aren't we supposed to be talking or something?”
Rebecca shrugs and sits back, angling her body to be facing Renfield. “Not really. Wait. That sounded like I don't want to talk to you, I do, but I'm also cool with us just hanging out doing our own things.”
Renfield nods and feels the knot in his stomach dissipate. “Yeah, me too, about the– about both talking and not. I like hanging out with you, Rebecca.”
Smiling Rebecca pats Renfield's knee. “I like hanging out with you too, you dork. Now check out this meme.”
“...What the hell is a star war?”
“Oh buddy, I know exactly what movies we’re watching next.”
