Chapter Text
The clicks of a computer, clacking of keys, echoes through an empty home, every nook and cranny the house has to offer is full of the monotonous sound of his keyboard. The typing doesn't seem to cease, continuing on and on, without any pauses. Well, every now and then he did need to stay hydrated and respond to dm’s…
“Ugh, seriously? Not this song right now!”
With a few clicks from a mouse, sleek and black, connected by a tiny black wire into a USB port, the red light from underneath the device seeping out, the song changes, and he can continue his work in peace. You can ever so slightly hear the song coming from his headphones, also clean cut and black, but plastered with stickers and decals to the point where the original black isn't visible. Hope it doesn’t wake his ever-so-precious sister, right across from him. She would scream at him, waking the whole block, just for some somewhat loud typing, as if she isn’t loud enough while on call.
Now he scrolls through the block of text, breaking it up into smaller paragraphs, and correcting grammatical errors and other whatnought he has deemed ‘incorrect’ or not good enough for the final form. He was nearing the last few chapters planned for this work, and he needed to work quickly, being so severely behind schedule. The only thing illuminating the room was the eerie glow of the laptop stationed on his desk, being abused by slender fingers, attacking at its keys. If laptops were sentient, this would one would rebel and fight back against the constant abuse.
“Ha! Finished! Now I just need to upload!”
Some rustling and key clicking came from the room adjacent, and a few words probably directed at his sister’s friends, before leaving the room and coming into his, “Hey, don’t scream right now, gingy. You’ll wake dad. He groaned, the look on his face murderous, mostly thanks to the laptop’s blue-ish light on his face.
“God, Ena, stop calling me that, and also, aren’t you the one that got threatened with getting your setup taken away?” he said, a slimy, disgusting smirk building up on his face, the one his dear, lovely sister hated to the moon and back. She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, which looked especially ridiculous in her children’s pajamas and fluffy bunny slippers. She looked like one of those toddlers who threw temper tantrums at stores about not getting the stupidly expensive toy they wanted. Hey, she even has the same frown!
She turned her back to him, and walked out the door, not closing it. “Don’t know when you became such an insomniac gingy, I thought I was the only one in this household.”
“Stop calling me fucking gingy Ena!”
He heard a little giggle come from her room, then it was back to the clacking and sounds of conversation. He reluctantly stood up to close his door his oh-so forgetful, silly older sister forgot to close! How cheeky of her! She hasn’t won yet though. He could do a lot worse things to piss her off, of course, but for now, waking the block is enough, no need to wake the whole solar system. He slams the door, earning himself an “AKITO!!” from the room across from his, and some partial satisfaction. Akito sits back down at his desk, where neglected assignments and papers pile high up into the stratosphere. He’s lucky Toya agreed to a study session, because his grades are barely managing to hang on for dear life, better yet, they’re like my life bar after playing Tondemo Wonderz on Master, despite having an all-healer team.
Oh, Toya, how his skin is perfect, pure like freshly fallen snow, the way his hair blows in the wind, his ever so slightly long eyelashes, little laughs, and his kindness, ah, but this isn't for simping, is it.
Nevermind the ever so slightly, well, interesting thought of Toya, if he knew what he was doing in this very moment, he would leave him in the dust, to never ever converse again, never see him again. No more BAD DOGS, no more Weekend Garage, no more friendship with the blue-haired Shoto Todoroki clone with a matching set of pronouns.
the work should appear in the following minutes.
Success.
Akito checks through his Nightcord messages and servers before closing all the tabs on his laptop and putting it back in its slot, all plugged in, nice and cozy, tired from all the relentless abuse it has suffered through this night. Akito should be softer on his laptop, it has feelings too!
The room is coated in absolute darkness. Perhaps you could see a blinking light from the laptop, or the glow of Akito’s phone screen from the bedside table, or if he opened the window, traffic going down scramble crossing as people moved across the intersection in large mobs, blinkers and taillights of cars.
t0uya_vbs: 12:45 PM
Akito, are you still awake?
t0uya_vbs: 12:46 PM
I saw you online just a minute ago, you should be going to sleep earlier.
t0uya_vbs: 12:46 PM
Good night, Akito.
—
Of course when Akito woke up it felt as if he had just gone to sleep.
Of course it did.
Reluctantly, he got his groggy, ginger-ass out of bed, dragging the sheets with him as he stood up. Messed up orange hair covering his face, all swirly and sticking up from rolling over in bed all night, or at least for the portion of the night he got to sleep for. He looked over at his phone, and checked through all the meaningless and gray notifications. The only ones he really cared about were texts, messages, or new song releases from bands or solo artists he enjoys.
Akito’s eyes drift upwards to the time- shit.
He runs to his clothing hamper and takes out his school uniform, sliding on his pants, buttoning up his shirt, loosely putting on the striped tie and barely managing to leave his room before he was supposed to. He’s disheveled and with dark circles under his eyes, Ena’s trademark look, and he looked as if he hadn’t gotten out of bed in days. He threw some textbooks and notebooks in his bag before slamming the door (Ena hates that, no wonder why he does it.) and running to the bathroom before leaving for school.
Ena sits at the island, chewing on a simple cream-cheese bagel. It’s light, easy to make, and won’t burn down the house. Not the healthiest food, yes, but a bagel and a green juice does make a good social media post. No doubt about it. Now she can flaunt the #healthybreakfastideas on her story and become someones pinterest board inspo.
The seeds of the bagel fall to the plate with every bite, little black bits or large seeds, falling, spilling amongst the table. She takes a sip of her green juice, then gags in disgust. Despite being somewhat healthy and aesthetically pleasing, Ena will never get over the taste of green juice. So vegetable-y, so cold, not good for mornings. She doesn’t understand how influencers and internet celebrities manage to drink this gross mixture of vegetables every day as they promote. She might begin to side with Rui’s opinions on vegetables…
She finishes the whole thing, despite her prior disliking of the juice. She tosses the dishes in the sink, and walks away. Of course, hoping for her father to blame Akito. She makes her way to the bathroom door and knocks, “Oh dear brother. Are you almost out of there?”. “I just got in here for god’s sake! Let me take a shit in peace, will you?” screamed Akito, his muffled voice through the bathroom door, the trickling of water, brushing of teeth.
Akito opens the bathroom door, and a scream erupts from behind the door. Akito is now in a state of panic, pulling the door closed, and seeing Ena, clutching her face, screaming curses, as quickly as she could. The door, the side that hit Ena in the face, was now marked with a face full of makeup. You could make out the eyeshadow, pink and shiny, her glossed lips and foundation.
“GOD FUCKING DAMMIT, YOU LITTLE BITCH. I’M GOING TO MAKE SURE YOU NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF-”
He was out the door before she could begin her villain arc.
Being away from Ena, finally, and avoiding dishes and possible murder attempts by her. Only drawback is the study session at Akito’s being canceled. It was okay, they could just go to Tsukasa’s, despite Akito’s dislike of the blond-haired boy, all of his short, annoying self. Maybe he hated Ena more than Tsukasa, but his hate of Ena was only circumstantial. His hate of Tsukasa was forever. Every single shout that came out of the boy’s mouth, Akito hated. But he would gladly deal with that for a study session with Toya.
He walked down the street and put his headphones on, playing some music to distract himself from the beast he awaited at home and the narcissist he awaited at school. Walking with music was always enjoyable for Akito. The familiar buildings and route, the sky, sun beating down on him as he picked up pace after checking the time. Akito arrived at school fairly quickly for having overslept. He does live fairly close to school, so it wasn’t like he would be majorly late to school. He eyes Touya talking to, oh god, Tsukasa, of all people. Killing two birds with the same stone, huh. Time to grow balls of steel and go over there, Akito.
“Yo. Toya.”
Toya, upon hearing his name being called, turns around and pauses his conversation with Tsukasa to talk to Akito. The smile on Toya’s face when Akito arrives, priceless. Akito wouldn’t trade this boy for the world. Toya smiles and looks at Akito, “Hi Akito! Tsukasa was telling me about the upcoming test, and if we could study together, but I supposed the three of us study together?”
Read his mind.
“Funny, I was going to ask you if we could study at Tsukasa-senpai’s house. Things at home got- uhh, silly, to say the least…” muttered Akito, barely loud enough for the two to hear him over the morning conversations in the yard. Toya stared dead straight into Akito’s eyes, worrying him. “What happened, or more, what did you do this time?” asked Toya. He looked disappointed yet mad at Akito, striking some sort of fear in him. “Ena.” Akito barely managed to get the name out his mouth as he was looking around the yard to make sure she hadn’t come to school today. He doubts she would after having her whole face of makeup ruined, and she would get her friend, Mikzuki, if they even are at school, to beat him up for her. Just the thought of it makes him shudder.
“Do not fear Ena, Akito. For I am here!” shouted Tsukasa at the top of his lungs. Of course Tsukasa did. As if he wouldn’t shout something stupid and embarrassing like that at the top of his lungs. Toya giggled at Tsukasa’s remark before remembering something and pulling out his phone.
Oh, and his lockscreen is…
It’s a picture of the two performing in an event as BAD DOGS, capturing Touya’s beauty in a never fading moment, the essence of the performance and the mood of the event. It wasn’t even half as good as Rad Weekend. Not even a quarter, a sixth, tenth, hundredth, but the way he feels each night he performs is special. Performing is something he wouldn’t give up for the world, just like Toya!
He pulls up the web browser and taps his fingers quickly on the small touchscreen. Before you know it, he types out a whole website link, fingers on fire, getting an all perfect in typing. As the website loads on the crappy school wifi, Akito’s eyes widen. A bit concerned, but okay nonetheless.
Then he pulls it up.
Oh no.
Touya beams brightly at Akito, displaying the screen to Akito happily. “Look at what Saki-chan showed me the other day! It’s this website for fan works, primarily fanfiction about already existing enterprises, it’s so cool! You can find almost any kind of story for any kind of pairing and from any franchise! I took a liking to this work especially, by a user named ‘KenFan07'. Another fan of Ken-san here online! I know you don’t enjoy reading and aren’t interested in reading, but I’ll still recommend it! It’s beautifully written, and you can tell the author truly puts his heart into every chapter!”
Please, please, can this torture stop already! He can’t possibly enjoy-
“Oh yeah! Touya-kun is right! Saki also showed me the work. I find it refreshing to see a work with two male characters as the main romance! It’s treated more seriously than BL manga, and the plot has me hooked! Your trusted senpai will not lie to you, and you should read more, Akito.”
Oh god, Akito is praying to the gods for him to wake up and find out this is a dre-
“Hey, are you talking about that one work by the KenFan guy on the archive?” said some girls next to the three. They were giggling about something, god knows what. Wait, if it’s the-
“Chapter 30 was so spicy though! I didn’t expect the author to write that kind of stuff! Of course, it’s rated Mature, but I didn’t expect, well, that! It wasn’t bad though, It was enjoyable yet spicy in its own way!”
Before he knew it, way too many people to count had joined in on the conversation about the fan work, that it was a bit nerve racking knowing that the whole school knew. He knew it was popular, but not that the whole school would know…
Toya backed away from the conversation, and saw Akito’s expression of total horror, and rushed to him. He placed a hand on his back, and looked down at him as he sat on a nearby bench. “You okay, Akito?” asked Toya. How genuine Toya was, kinda scary. With Toya, you knew when he meant something, and it’s amazing how true he is to himself, and to everyone. One of the many things he loves about Aoyagi Toya.
Shinonome Akito was okay, really.
Now he just needs to make sure that Toya never finds out that the KenFan is him.
Notes:
have fun lol this fic is gonna be a wilddddddd ride lmao
thanks for reading as always
Chapter 2
Summary:
shinonome akito is avoiding his sister. that'll bite him in the ass.
Chapter Text
The dismissal bell had just rung, and Akito couldn't begin to describe the amount of talk he heard about his work. In the halls, during lunch, during class, they never stopped talking about it. He heard Kusanagi, the quiet one in Touya’s homeroom, talk about it. He heard Kamishiro talk about it. He is a weirdo, so he would enjoy that stuff, although that's besides the point. An, for not being the most intellectual one at this school, alongside Akito with her disdain for reading and literature, was talking about it during hall monitoring with her partner. Who knows if they’re talking about it at Miya girls… he should ask Kohane about that and make sure that the fic’s popularity hasn’t skyrocketed outside of Kamiyama.
Akito walked at a leisurely pace as the three boys walked out of the school gate. Toya and Tsukasa converse, oh, they’re probably still talking about… that… chapter…
Akito regrets writing that chapter. If anyone ever finds out it was him, he would be labeled as a weirdo, pervert, no better than Kamishiro, ugh, he just doesn’t want to think about it; and speaking of chapters, the work needs to be finished soon. He has so much work for school and the archive, Akito can barely keep track.
The boys walk on the road, Akito sticking to the narrow sidewalk, detached from Touya and Tsukasa; hoping to not fully geek out about his own work and in the process reveal the work to be… he kicks a can to concentrate on something else, following its path, trying to destroy its silver body, bits and pieces falling off. “Oh, I know they’re not together yet, but I just want them to get together already, you know…” mutters Tsukasa, directed to Toya, of course, but Akito can’t help but overhear. If Akito could dig a hole to die in, he would gladly bury his head in the concrete streets, no, himself, in the concrete streets, but he needs to finish the work. He needs to give the fans what they want.
A few blocks more of can kicking, Akito thinks to himself. Just stare down and let the world outside your personal sphere turn into gray, tune out everyone else…
“Akito?” A gentle hand on his shoulder makes him jump, head turning to look at Toya, oh, Toya, and he’s kind of close to Akito’s face… Akito’s face, bright red, staring at Toya, from very, very, close up…
“I’M FINE I’M FINE DON’T WORRY IT’S ALL GOOD” shouts Akito, regretting his life in the process. It was so loud he heard birds fly off of wires and he made the king of shouts, Tsukasa, give him a concerned look. Toya sighed, “Don’t overwork yourself. Again. If you need a break, then take a break. I thought you understood this…” Akito did understand, except maybe not when the object of his affection was in his face. A little bit too close. Not like he wouldn’t savor it.
“I know, I know, are we almost there yet?” said Akito, putting his hands up behind head.
“Yes Akito! Only a few steps away, in fact!” Of course Akito has a grudge against Tsukasa, but he withstands it. He only rolls his eyes and looks away as Tsukasa continues his leisure conversation with Toya.
Akito looks to the side to see a large home nestled in the densely packed together neighborhood that surrounds Shibuya. He knew the Tenma’s were well off, but not that well off. Immense amounts of light poured in through the ceiling-high windows that faced the garden. At most, a home here would have a balcony, but not a backyard. Old children’s toys like a weathered slide and mini swings sat in the backyard, seemingly untouched. Although the somewhat eerie sight, he focused his attention on the stairway, where two pigtails seemed to bounce.
“Saki!!! I’m home!” shouted Tsukasa, as hurried steps came from the upstairs of the home. A bright haired girl with pigtails, and a girl with dark, long blue hair came out onto the stairs, the latter staying on the upper railings, taking her time walking down while the previous ran down, hair bobbing and waving. Yet again she manages to not fall. She leans over to shake Toya’s hand, as she knows Toya as almost a brother, seeing as how frequently he comes over to the Tema household. “Toya-kun! Good to see you here! And who is the ginger?” asks Saki, looking over in disgust at Akito, who only frowns more.
“Hey!” screams Akito, in mistreatment to all ginger kind, as this rude comment has been taken very, very personally. “Watch your mouth.” Saki shudders, and whispers to Tsukasa, as Akito side-eyes the siblings throughout their silent conversation. Toya glances over and takes Akito to the table like an uncooperative toddler, and begins setting up their textbooks.
“You can’t forget what we initially came over for, Akito.” says Toya. Akito groans, throwing his head back as he sits down besides Touya, staring blankly at his notebook. “If you finish early we might be able to go to that new pancake place a few blocks away. I still owe you for that bet I made last time we went to that event.” Akito perks up, and digs through his bag for his pencil and pen. Akito is smiling at Toya.
It makes him want to smile too. The intoxicating smile of the boy, spreading even to him. “First, let’s go over…”
–
“Guys! Guys! Look at this fan theory!” shouted Saki, standing up from her position on the couch as she ran over to the table where the boys were stationed. All but Akito look over, even more, Akito lowers his head.
He only takes a peek at Saki’s screen, and narrowly skims over the text. He snorts, covering his mouth with his hand. Saki looks at him, her eyes shining even brighter. “Wait, Akito, how do you know...wait... YOU’VE READ IT!”
“Erm…” she jumps up and down, holding onto her phone, as her blonde and pink pigtails swing back and forth, and as Akito gives her a nasty stare. He should’ve never made a comment, kept his cool, deadpanned as he does with Mizuki, you know, you know, but it’s too late, sadly. He mustn't fret. It’ll blow over, he’s sure of it! Toya looks over, his eyes almost as bright and starry as Saki’s. He looked somewhat like Kohane does in all her hamster-like glory. If Toya’s eyes could twinkle, they most definitely would. He gets up close with Akito and smiles, “Where should we start?”
At this point, Akito is in a cold sweat. Any answer that provides a little bit too much insight or any accidental spoilers to the finale could possibly reveal him. He was a spy, playing mission impossible infiltrating a top secret government base. He had to control the fate of the country, of the sacred land of Kamiyama High, where the secret shall never spill, that he, Akito Shinonome, is the legend himself!
“What’s your favorite chapter?” Toya’s question brought Akito back to the reality he had been hoping to escape so badly. Not the being with Toya part, any time spent with Toya was time well spent, but no, the grueling questions of the certain archive work awaited him.
He thought long and hard about his answer, recalling every chapter he wrote. No, that one’s too short, but this one drags on for an extra thousand words! Ugh, I didn’t really know what to add during the beginning of this new arc, so it sucks here, but then during the peak of the action in chapter 27 I could’ve made it more, more, real! Akito came back from the zone, the place where our minds go during our most impressive full combos. (Looking at you, Gekokujo.) His response wasn’t well crafted by any means, yet it was a response to the question Toya had posed. He took a deep breath and sighed, “I guess I like uh, 20…?”
Toya gasps and claps his hands, like a little child. It’s quite adorable, really, considering his serious and stoic nature. A small deviation from the norm won’t hurt Touya, right? He’s been deviating from what his dad wanted for him since he discovered Akito and Vivid street! Akito makes a failed attempt at not staring, but as implied, he fails, looking intensely at the unbridled joy that had overcome Touya. “That's my favorite chapter too! I love the dynamic between the main characters, and their confession was so sweet! Even the author said they based it on the confession they want to have with the boy they have a crush on! Unlike many self-insert-ish types of work, I feel like this really does work.”
\
And he went along to mention it, didn’t he? The so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so, dumb decision of writing about his conflicting, not going anywhere, quite hopeless, love life in the notes? What kind of fucking idiot does that?
“Yeah, I see.” Akito’s responses have lacked character for quite a while, being way too bland for his own liking, but then again, showing enthusiasm might give it away! Touya continued on his tangent, “I know, right! I can’t help but root for the author after finishing each chapter! I really hope she gets her dream boy, since I truly believe she is a wonderful person.”
Akito was sweating. Even colder than before. Even more than before. This was war. The un-laughing war had begun, any snort, cackle, sound coming out of the bodily cavern that was considered the mouth, primarily used for the consumption of food, would end him. It was giving him war flashbacks, he would have to call his subordinates to wheel him away from this fight, but although he had the easy way out, he wouldn’t dare to admit defeat. And so, he keeps his laughter in at Touya’s misconception of the author’s gender.
“Ahem, what led you to believe that the author is a girl? Just a question Touya?” He was quick to respond, per usual, “Well, with the modern BL genre we see today, most stories are written by women for women, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that the author is a she, although it is what most people in the comments call the author.” As always, his responses are clean and professional, explaining everything clearly. Akito nods as Touya lets out his monologue, then goes back to copying notes from Touya. A small break from the routine of copying notes won’t hurt, right?
–
Tsukasa yawns, pushing back his notebook and reclining back in his chair, sun setting through the large glass panels that surround the Tenma living room.
“I can’t believe, I, Tsukasa, am tired! What is this blasphemy!” Tsukasa is slumped over on the dinner table, and his eyes are completely glazed over, will to live broken.
A jingle of keys is heard, and he barely manages to move his head to face the door, which through it comes his mom, holding a bag from a local bakery. Two small pieces of blonde hair fall forward, then… then….
A horde. A horde of white women, OH SHIT WAIT I FORGOT THIS TAKES PLACE IN JAPAN! My bad chat, a horde of women. Tsukasa’s mom’s friends, to be exact. An amalgamation of corporate fashion mixed with the feminine elegance of the upper middle class Tsukasa’s family was a part of, the blob, walked into his household, loud as can be and chattering away.
Akito perks up once he hears what they’re talking about, and runs to his phone. He slides his arm across the table and accidentally drops his phone, followed by a makeshift juggling session and a stare or two.
‘HEH, haha, hahaha, oh Toya, clumsy butterfinger-y me! Ahhh…..”
Toya stares in more confusion than before.

Chapter Text
“I hope you aren’t mad at me for bringing over the book club unexpectedly, Tsukasa, Saki, i’m sorry for interrupting your hangout with Ichika, and the study session with Touya and the other one here, Miki had a business meeting, so we couldn’t use her house, so I had to volunteer, i’ll talk to you both after our discussion.”
The way Mrs. Tenma delivered her words was like honey, and full of such a genuine tenderness for her family, wow, he really was overthinking the family thing right now. Stuffing more books there, a journal fits in the back pocket, almost done packing up, and no response from Ena. Just great.
Ichika walked over from the couch and leaned on the table, scrolling through her phone. “Seems I've been evicted.” She grins at Akito, and he has no other choice but to offer a kind smile back. The one thing on his mind is if the thing on her phone is his work.
A woman in a bright colored dress claps to get the attention of all the people in the room, and her Japanese is botched, barely meeting the bare minimum of being understood. Her blonde hair and blue eyes revealed why. “Okay guys, so the urgence of this meeting is…”
“Discussing the work that has been circulating around these past few weeks. I’m assuming we’ve all read it, no?”
Oh, they said it, they’ve done it, ha, haha, he could run home right now, maybe even sprint home fueled purely out of his embarrassment. Laughter and conversation erupted after the woman’s statement surrounding Akito’s work, and the 5, Saki, Tsukasa, Ichika, Akito and Toya, had been spectating from the dinner table for a while.
Tsukasa was treating the event as a movie, you could hear the popping of another popcorn bag from the microwave as Tsukasa finished up the one he had initially opened up. Apparently a girl from his circus, singing, theater kid circle, the energetic pink one who wouldn’t shut up he had met a few times on occasion, had recommended him some ultra-sugary, candy filled popcorn, that also came with a hefty price tag. Tsukasa can’t say no!
As Tsukasa chowed down on his popcorn, Akito kept refreshing nightcord, praying his dear sister would text him when she arrived. Every notification that came from his phone, he jumped up in hopes it was his sister. They were all notifications that his work had been given kudos or commented on. Ichika looked down from her phone and sighed. “Imma get my guitar and start heading out Saki.” She went upstairs, with Saki happily trailing behind like a puppy. Now that it was just Tsukasa and his food, attentive Toya, and Akito, the silence between the three grew ever so louder.
Oh yeah. Except for Tsukasa’s chewing. Man, was he loud as fuck.
“Don’t you find it interesting how something, with like, zero relevance, gets to this point? I know half of it is luck, but it must feel amazing to be the author!” Oh, how wrong could one be! Touya, you’re really making Akito consider taking you out of his author’s notes!!
Akito’s everything was greasy and sweaty. Including his balls. Mainly, his hands.
Ichika came down with Saki, carrying her guitar and schoolbag. As she was going to leave the house, a woman interrupted her, “Excuse me, is that a guitar?” It was the blonde group leader with the horrible Japanese accent from earlier asking Ichika about her instrument. “Yes, this is a guitar, a Fender strat…” The woman clapped in excitement as she whispered something into Ichika’s ear.
“Wonder... wall?”
-
After much dragging (and ruining of the wooden Tenma floors), Ichika had set up her guitar, and pulled up sheet music for the song the woman recommended, an English song called Wonderwall. She had heard of the song from watching guitar videos in English, and of its infamy, and, of course, she knew the song and the chords by heart. Her and the band liked the song, and didn’t understand what western guitarists talked about when they shamed those who played Wonderwall. It was a catchy tune that was easy to play? What's so bad about that?
She placed a tuning clip on the headstock of her guitar, slowly adjusting each tuning machine until each string was in tune. She took a strum on her fully tuned, and amped up guitar, adjusted her capo to the 2nd fret, took a deep breath, and played an Em7 on the guitar.
“Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it all back to you…”
She could barely pronounce english. Ruh roh.
The woman was in shock at Ichika playing the song, and well at that. Her pronunciation of the English words may be absolute dogshit, but that girl does have an absolutely majestic voice, and talent.
“You’re my wonderwall…”
Akito watched intently at the live performance given by Ichika for the foreign woman, and how her blue eyes seemed to pop out of her face. What is with these people?
At the end of a phrase, Ichika stopped strumming and took a break, guess who was playing drum fills with their chewing? Some of the ladies gave Tsukasa a side eye, a side eye he was unable to process as meaning “STOP FUCKING CHEWING SO GODDAMN LOUD YOU TWAT,” as he couldn’t for the love of god realize when Akito meant to throw an insult instead of a compliment.
Toya tapped him on the shoulder, and his teeth had marshmallow and jelly bean paste almost gluing them together which grossed out Akito. “Could you keep your chewing down? Please?”
BOOM!!!
A loud sound came from the kitchen, and the guys at the table ran to see what was happening, and could you believe it, the microwave was on fire!
“WAHHHHHHHH!!! EVERYONE! GET OUT! IMPERATIVELY!!”
Akito rolled his eyes, grabbed his bag, and pushed through screaming people from the book club until he was at the door. He fumbled to open the lock, and stepped out onto the sidewalk. The winter air was a cold greeting to the world outside of Tsukasa’s heated living room. He grabbed his scarf, and wrapped it around his neck before going to the corner of the street. Ena finally texted Akito back, and told him to wait at the corner of the street, where he now was. He exhaled and put his back up against the wall of a building, the exhale turning into a cloud.
“Akito!”
The blinding lights of a familiar crappy 2 door car from 20 years ago approach him, as he feels arms embracing him from behind. His stomach dropped as he asked who it was. “It’s me, Toya? Are you okay Akito?” Oh god. Now it was his stomach and his heart . Why…. Why Akito….. Why did you have to fall in love with your best friend???
“I’m okay, it’s just that, Ena… came to pick me up.”
“Okay Akito, I care about you… remember it, ‘kay?” said Toya, the words, melting into Akito's heart.
No one other than his mom, and when he was like 5, had ever held his face.
“You should’ve seen it, when Tsukasa opened the door, it was covered in marshmallows, and popcorn overflowed out, and he used fire extinguisher on the whole kitchen, hahaha, I only stopped laughing until I realized you were here, and, then I started worrying about you, crap… you should probably go since your ride is waiting.”. Toya let go of Akito’s face and ran back to Tsukasa’s house, where smoke was running out the door and the smell of burning and sugar wafted through the air. Aktio smiled and only turned to the car until Toya was out of sight. Oh god, Ena…
SHE FUCKING FILMED IT????
That fucking bitch, he’s gonna fuck her up frfr no cap on god.
He reluctantly pulled open the door and pulled down the passenger seat, where he hid from his sister. “Soooooo, is this the guy? Guess this is the end of being ‘bi’, Aki!”
“Shut the fuck up. He’s different from those other asses from middle school.” Ena was smiling as she drove down the street. “So have you kissed yet?” asked Ena.
“...”
“WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU ENA. RIGHT NOW, he’s just a friend, and you’ve met him before, so stop making it a big deal when he grabs my face and says he cares about me.”
“I dunno Aki, that sounds pretty gay to me.” Akito pulled his hoodie strings and locked himself inside his hood to avoid his sisters invasive questions. “You didn’t answer my question Akito!!!”
“WE HAVEN’T! Okay….”
The new radio single from that one mysterious group played on the radio, apparently they met online and make online music? wack ass discord mod shit if i’ve ever seen any LMAOOO. Ena sang along quietly as Akito opened his phone to check his messages and doom scroll through social media til’ they got home.
The tires of the car squeak and the car stops in scramble crossing, Shibuya. “Ena, why are we stopping? I need to get home quickly because I have a paper due at 7!”
“Just shut up and let me drive. I could easily kick you out of the car and make you walk home right now.”. Akito grumbles at his sisters threats as someone begins to bang, I mean destroying the side of the car as Ena quickly unlocks the door, (manually, of course, because the passenger side lock doesn't unlock automatically, shitty sedan and all) and in climbs what seems like 2 kids in a trenchcoat.
“POOOOKIEEEEE!!!! I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!!! Are you okay?”. So-called ‘pookie’ removes their trench coat, to only be the one and only Airi Momoi. Pink pigtails and everything!
“I’m fine Ennie, just some rabid fans who noticed me.” says Airi nonchalantly, as if this is a completely average Wednesday evening for her. “How was your day?” Ena grabs her Monster Energy with her free hand as she makes a turn, and turning up the radio, which is now playing metal. “As good as can be, bitch”.
“OH MY GOD. YOU KNOW THIS IS MY SONG” The two girls proceed to headbang and scream the lyrics, frying their throats and concerning Akito even more. Didn't know the perfect pink idol happened to be a metalhead. “THIS SONG IS SO LIKE, THAT ONE GUY FROM THAT HELLA POPULAR FANFIC RIGHT NOW. LIKE THE FANCY ASS GAY ONE WHO’S LIKE NO.1 PINING”
More reason to be concerned.
“HUHHHHH?” Ena can barely hear what the fuck Airi is saying, let alone is she paying more attention on the street. Akito would never let himself become one of the mfs who dies on insta reels pages named ‘no_one_died01’. “WAIT ENA THIS IS MY STOP!!!!” screams Airi, as Ena hits the brakes. Akito bets a pretty penny that the brakes aren’t the only thing she's hitting as of recently. More of a something. The car reeks of it.
\Airi crawls out of the car and waves goodbye while running to her house and checking the perimeter for fans. The huge hat, trench coat and shades aren't doing what she thinks they're doing for her. Poor Airi…
The rest of the drive was silent, with Ena turning down the radio, calming down, and groaning about how doing that with her online friends before picking him up was a bad idea. I think Akito could tell by her driving. They pull up in a garage as Ena pulls down the car seat for Akito. He steps out of the car carefully, like an accordion stretching, only to be greeted by the feeling of a speeding hand on his face. “And that's what you get for ruining my face and my makeup this morning! Now we're even!” She walks away and into the building, trailed by the click-clack of her heels. Akito had a feeling this wouldn't be the least of his abuse.
-
Now in his room, he could unwind. He would just suck it up and turn in his paper late, (otherwise known as in a week) and he would finally get the mystical, elusive magic known as sleep. That is, if his phone wouldn't stop absolutely exploding woth notifcations. Rabid twitter fans be damned.
He shuts his phone off, and he does so too with the light. Now it's only the traffic of scramble crossing lulling him to sleep.
t0uya: 9:03 PM
We fixed the microwave :-) It took really long, but we just finished cleaning it haha
t0uya: 9:05 PM
Aki? You’re normally up pretty late, did you already go to sleep? You might be busy, but idk.
t0uya: 9:15 PM
It’s been like 10 minutes and you haven't responded so either you're actually doing your work (lol), eating/showering, or sleeping. Good night either way ;)

Chapter Text
They entered their room and put on their headset, clicking too quick for the average human mind to comprehend. Opening up many web pages all at the same time, opening up source codes and filtering through data. This is what they needed.

@kenfan07

Yes! They just posted, as expected. They opened up a command prompt on their computer and pasted the link of the post alongside the command ‘ping’.
And there was the very sought after IP address they had been looking for.
They took off the headset and jumped around their room, dancing around in joy! “YES! I finally got the IP address of that one fanfiction dude! Then I’ll be able to sell their information to a big media outlet, get money, be able to afford a new sewing machine, materials for years… oh god, I could change my life.” they thought to themselves.
They quickly calmed down and took a sip of their pink monster energy, as the job was not yet done.
They looked up the IP address on the internet, and, they were completely perplexed by what they saw:
“What? Ena’s house?”
-
It had been a week-ish since the events of last Wednesday, and Akito didn't feel all that great about that. First of all, he flunked the test he studied for, mostly because he couldn't stop thinking about what happened the day prior, and before he knew it the allotted test time had concluded, leaving him with erratic scribbled up answers, Second, he had to update the fic. He made an announcement on Twitter last night to his followers about how the next chapter would be a big one. He was partially scared, because there is a common opinion on what is right and what needs to happen, and he's scared of defying it. What if people try to find out his identity? He’ll be the laughingstock of the world!!
Okay, chill out Akito, none of that has happened yet, and all the chapters you upload are all met with well remarks. No need to panic yet.
But he did need to finish it. Akito groaned and got out of bed, dragging his body towards his desk. He was like a lanky ginger noodle, wobbling and barely managing to stay on his feet.
“Okay laptop. Just a few more til’ its over.” The laptop was ready to cry. PLEASE AKITO STOP WRITING GAY PORN ON THIS!!!!
He was in the zone, he couldn't stop typing, words flowing from his fingers like water, phrases being filled with life and vibrance, illuminating the epic he was about to change forever.

Mizuki? Dm-ing me? They love to shit on Akito’s fuckass highlighter ginger bitchboy hair, but it’s not like they hangout out of their own volition. Always blackmailing people for personal gain. Oh right; They'll do anything to get their way.
Akito paused his music, not even 10 minutes into this work session. He clicked the notification without skipping a beat

SERIOUSLY
With his head in his hands and now nothing more than his wife (maybe not his wife, more like a crony) he got himself dressed and prepared to leave the house. As it was spring break, he had a large amount of free time. He actually did something good for once, and wrote the other chapters that proceed the current one ahead of time, except the latest one. Since it’s the climax of the story, he needs to get it right. Perfect. Less time to do that now, I suppose.
He put on his sweats and a T-shirt, ditching his 2 dingy jackets as it was warm outside, and flowers and trees were in bloom now. Taking a walk through Shibuya, he noticed pink blossoms beginning to sprout from the cherry trees. It was a oddly liberating feeling to be out and about when the cherry blossoms were in bloom. Oh god, he’s sounding like a shoujo protagonist… wait… NOOOO… HE’S TURNING INTO ONE!!!
Okay. That was… really something… but nevertheless, Akito would never let his thoughts win! Even if in his mind, he’s a sad little schoolgirl and Toya is a rizzy sigma. #Tiktokrizzparty?
He walked through Main street and down a secluded alley. Soon, he arrived at Shibuya park, and the pink devil stood before him.
He had all sorts of emotions. Scared? Worried? Sad? Anxious? He can't be categorized by one thing when seeing Mizuki. Their aura was so strong it blew Akito away, he was hanging onto a stop sign for dear life.
“Oh my gods, lil bro actually pulled up!” they exclaimed, clapping their hands. They were wearing a white short sleeved blouse with puffy sleeves, a dark pink vest and a blue ruffle skirt with knee socks. They looked just like a doll, the cover of fruits magazine even; And as innocent as they looked, Akito knew what hid behind those mad editing skills and cute smirks. “Don't play cute with me Akiyama. What the hell do you want today?” said Akito, glaring at Mizuki. “Eh, not much, to be honest, I kinda just wanted to hang out if I’m being completely honest.”. The scowl on Akito’s face disappeared completely. Them? Wanting to hangout? Out of their own volition??? Were they high when sending those messages?? Is he hallucinating all this and is currently drugged by the CIA to perform a coup of the Japanese government? Nevertheless, if Mizuki’s intentions are really as they say, he has no reason to reject them.
Mizuki stared at Akito, who was still internally panicking at the situation and its legitimacy. “Dude… are you like… fully there?” asked Mizuki. He snapped back into the cruel reality he was living, not the nightmares of being sent to Area 51 to become a test subject, but of risking the boy you love to an idea that was originally a fever dream. Akito looked around, scratching his head, “Uhh… yeah, sure I guess.”.
“Yay!! We can begin!”. First of all, ominous vibes 100%, but you don't fuck with Mizuki. Time for 3 hours of obedience or those area 51 coup nightmares won't be so much of nightmares.
-
Sooooo, they haven't really done anything, except Akito buy them shit out of fear of what they can do…, well, they can't be that powerful anyways… better safe than sorry, no?
“OOOOH!!! THAT ICE CREAM LOOKS SOOOO GOOD!!! AKITO, WE SHOULD GET SOME!!!” shouted Mizuki from the top of their lungs to Akito, who was struggling to carry their bags of clothing. And cute snacks. And accessories. And fabric. And charms. And everything in existence. They're literally Ena but worse!!! (Give my boy a break pls)
Once Akito caught up to Mizuki, they were pointing and gawking at every perfect slice of cake, dress, and bow they could see in a 10 mile radius. They had already bought so much shit, Akito didn't see how it was possible for them to want more.
“You know Akito? Have you heard of that fanfiction!” they said.
Akito choked on air at the mention of fanfiction. Right now, his main concern should be carrying all these bags that seem as if they're stuffed with rocks or some shit. “You know, the one by kenfan07!”.
Okay, play it cool Akito! You can do it!
“No. I don't really.” he said through all his panting. “Huhh, really! I thought you of all people would know about it! Well, there's a lot of people who don't like it, so I could see you as one of those, but really, what's your stance on it?” said Mizuki. Akito put the bags down so his response was clearer and responded to their questions, “I’m neutered.”.
“-wait”
“BWAHAHAHHAHAHha!!! LIL BROS BALLS ARE GONEEEEEE” laughed Mizuki. All of main street went silent for a second before the usual chatter continued on. Oh god. He couldn't be more of a laughingstock at this very moment. "I MEANT NEUTRAL, BITCH." huffed Akito, attempting to heave along their load of shopping while quipping back.
Mizuki pulled him along, practically dragging him. “Akito, besides your, uhh… cool opinion, is there anything else you know about the fic? I’m verrry curious…” they said, giving one of their signature smirks at him. “It’s okay.” responded Akito.
He won’t let them be the end of him. Not this way, at least.
Mizuki proceeded to ask Akito questions quickly, as they changed their methods.
“What are your feelings about the newest chapter?”
“I didn’t care.”
“Do you know the name of the main character ?”
“No.”
“Do you know the name of the character’s boyfriend?”
“No.”
“Do you know the name of your boyfriend?”
“No.”
“Wait- Mizuki, I don’t-“
Mizuki began to giggle again, but not as loud as when Akito announced his ball-lessness. “Haha, that one always works! Gotta be sharper than that lil bro!” said Mizuki playfully, smirking at Akito while walking backwards, watching him carry their stuff, just barely. They turned around, marching down the street. “Wait, Akito, go back, I wanna say hi to someone…”. Akito looked at Mizuki in confusion, as the only place they could was down some dingy alley, but why would Mizuki want to go there? To kill him for answers?
As they walked deeper into the alley, Mizuki became more menacing, their grin escaping the confines of their face, participating in evil hand rubbing, laughing as if they were some cartoon villain. “We’ve arrived! I thought you’d be a bit less slow though.”. The pair had arrived at Vivid street, a hub for local art and music. Akito had grown up coming to the neighborhood a lot and had witnessed many events in live houses around the place.
As they walked down the street, two people dressed in fantasy gear walked past the two. “Yeah! I’m surprised I wasn't the only cosplayer of the kenfan07 version of that character! I thought people were gonna think I was weird!”. Again, Akito is to choke on air. The cosplayers continued their stroll down Vivid street, despite their eccentric getup. The whole street was crowded in people dressed up in costumes and cosplay matter of fact, which lowkey creeped him out. Akito picked up his pace and whispered to Mizuki, “Hey dude, I’m not feeling so well, can we like, dip?”. Mizuki laughed, “No silly! And we’re almost there! I might get you a drink there if you really do feel bad. Okaaay!?”.
The two arrived at the weekend garage, and there was a banner hanging over the entrance that read ‘VividFancon 202X’. What was occuring inside, was straight out of Akitos nightmares.
The cafe was absolutely packed, the crowds basically pouring out the door. Once the two managed to weave their way through the absolute monster that was the crowd and took a seat at the bar, they noticed familiar faces at the stage of the Weekend Garage. It was An and Kohane, dressed in fantasy getup, were reciting what seemed like spoken word on the stage.
“We will be performing Anti-Social Media by Gabbie Hanna as the two main characters from the Kenfan07 fic as our entry to the performance competition here at VividFanCon!” said An, as she prepared her mic and paper containing the poem.
Kohane and An whispered to each other a bit before starting their preformance, and to say the least, it shook him to his core.
“Overwhelmed, overworked, overpaid
I’m on top of the world sitting pretty on a stack
But the static still cracks in my veins
At the bottom of the universe
I’m feeling all the weight”
“People die for this, people lie for this
People suck and fuck some guy for this
Pay the toll for this, sell their soul for this
Play my part, but what's my role in this?”
“I’m not built for this, all the guilt of this
And I don’t think I can deal with this
I'm too old for this, gonna fold from this
People starvin’ and I get gold for this?”
Akito zoned out just because of the pure absurdity of the situation. This shit is wack, even for me, Mr. Author.
He’s in Weekend garage while they’re hosting a mini fan convention,
With An and Kohane.
And they’re reciting Gabbie Hanna poetry.
While acting it out as characters from his fanfiction.
What the fuck.
He snapped back, and there they were, still reciting Gabbie Hanna’s poetry. How much more surreal could this get.
“PEOPLE LOVE THAT I HATE MYSELF!” shouted An, her voice full of raw emotion, as always. Serve exactly what you are An! CUNT!!!
“I climbed out of my head and watched myself implode
A thought without a body ought to be a shot to take a load off
My brain is poisoned and I’m searching for the antidote
But every time I find it, my defenses scream, “Oh, no you don’t!”"
Woah… IS THAT TEMU TODOROKI???
There he was, mythical creature of the night, Shoto Todoroki- fuck mb chat I mean Aoyagi Toya, sitting there, drinking black coffee. Out of all people, he’s the one person he’s the one he was PRAYING to not see during spring break. Unfortunately, Mizuki noticed Akito’s long gay longing, and pointed out the mystery man. “Hey there… is that Toya? Let’s go talk to him, Akito!” said Mizuki, practically bouncing towards Toya, dragging Akito with them. Toya waved at the two, his smile sincere. He took a sip of his black coffee and closed the book he was reading. “How have the two of you been! It’s been a while, Akiyama, Akito!” said Toya.
“Eehuuhhuhhelpueueumeeeheuisnijddnjs”.
“What? Akito, I can’t understand anything you’re saying.”
“HELP. ME.”
Akitos voice was dryer than your grandmas… wait… are you sure I can’t say that here? But free speech! Oh right… consequences. Forgot those existed.... Toya looked confusedly at Mizuki, who gave him one of those ‘everything is fine!’ smiles, then took his umbrella and left the establishment. “ SORRY TOYA! IT’S BEGUN TO RAIN! SEE YOU LATER!”.
-
The two had managed to run back to Ena and Akito’s house, as it isn’t far from Vivid street. Akito was just glad to be out of there, away from Toya, who turned him into a red mess, and to finally be able to sit down. Mizuki greeted the Shinonomes, then ran into the Ena cave, at least, that was what he called it, since she never turned the lights on and she guarded the place like a troll.
Akito went to his room, and laid spread out on his bed. He really was overthinking the whole situation, or so he thought. He was about 16, and already the creator of a work of literature he never expected to become so critically acclaimed. He never wanted to be famous, but there he was, every move, anonymous or not, really does count more than usual. The worst part? He’s alone. Other than his proofreader, some online anon he’s good friends with, but it's not like he can entrust them with the burden of having to hide a work you're proud of, something you’re glad to have created from the people you love.
Enough sad boy shit, it’s brat summer anyway! Still laying like an emo starfish, he hears a ping come from his phone.
Time-Sensitive: 3:06 PM
t0uya: hey did you take my umbrella or smth because it’s not at weekend garage and I'm sure I took it w/ me
Umbrella? Huh? Akito never took anything? He couldn't have possibly! Think of Mizuki’s baggage! Akito ran out of his room, looking around for any semblance of an umbrella, then there, on the kitchen table, was Toya’s umbrella? How the hell did he take it? More importantly, he got another notification from his phone:
Time-Sensitive: 3:08 PM
t0uya: also i’m sorry if it’s weird but i’ll be waiting outside ur home because i’m pretty sure u took it
HUHHH! AUTHOR-CHAN!!!!!!! STOP TORTURING MY BOY!!!!!
No can do readers, we’re going all in!!!!!
For the third and final time, Akito chokes on so much air he stumbles back and almost knocks one of his mom’s cabinets full of plates with sad babies or smth on em while dashing out his room. “Fuck!” and he runs out the door with the umbrella.
-
SLAM!! The slam of the front door was heard throughout the entire house, as Akito ran out the door.
An opening.
“MIZUKI, WHAT THE FUCK, WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF WATCHING KWITE’S STREAM-”
“Shut. The fuck. Up.” whispered Mizuki to Ena, putting their hand on her mouth to make her shut up, if only momentary. They creeped into Akito’s room, where his laptop was, still on the screen of their message from this afternoon.
They opened up his word documents, where after not much digging, there it was. Just to verify, they also opened the archive, and as expected, he was logged into the KenFan07 account.
“Damn, this has more pages than the FNAF theory doc…”
“HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT.”
-bonus ;3
The two sat in Ena’s car, the sunroof open to let the smoke billow out. Mizuki took a hit of the joint, then passing to Ena. “
“You know, I was kinda suspicious of you when I saw the IP adress being your home, because I know your IP adress, but to be honest, I don't think you're the fanfiction type. You made an account on ao3 just to bully people! Hah, well it’s good to know that it wasn't you.”
Ena blowed some smoke out of her mouth, passing the joint back to Mizuki.
“Yeah, I can SEE that.”
“And you know what you don't see? That MatTrap CANNOT be canon because Matpat already has a loving wife! Can't they see that Kwite loves him!” Ena says between sobs, her eyes red as hell because of the tears and smoke.
“I have no fucking idea what you are talking about.” says Mizuki with a grin, taking another hit.

————————————————
Akito couldn't believe his god-darn, fucking eyes. The ones that have been destroyed by copious amounts of blue light, the ones that stare longingly at Toya, the ones that can't process what he's seeing.
He stayed there, gawking at his screen, re-reading the blog post over and over and over until he practically had it memorized. “Sooooo.. what da ya think?” said Ena, being in a suprisingly good mood for the morning and for what occurred yesterday. Speaking of yesterday, quite a few things went down that Akito knows of.
One, VividFancon was, to date, the largest congregation of people (globally?) cosplaying a certain pairing of characters, but even more, they were all cosplaying that character but the version of them from a certain fan work… you know where this is going. Secondly, Akito kicked Mizuki out of their home after Toya’s sudden arrival, and lastly, Toya’s sudden arrival. It all happened so quickly, it was only a wisp in his memory.
Yesterday, after Mizuki and Akito arrived at the Shinonome house, Akito received a text from Toya, which probably fucked him up in some sort of weird, twisted, way (He chipped some of his moms porcelain. Lets just say he’s guiltmaxxing rn pookies…). He rushed down the stairs with Toya’s umbrella (which he still doesn't know how he got).
After receiving Toya’s text, Akito went right outside, but he didn't see Toya, so he went back up, only to find Mizuki sitting in his gaming chair, at his desk. They got kicked out. After five more minutes of waiting at the door, he finally received a knock.
“Hi…” said Toya, coughing due to being all wet. His nose, cheeks, and ears were all red and he was slightly shivering, as there’s only so much a light jacket could protect him from the weather. “Didn't really expect it to rain, even though the forecast said so…” continued Toya, Akito still taking in the fact that he’s there, in front of him, at his house; Most of all, soggy.
“Here. Umbrella!”. Akito held out Toya’s umbrella to him, which confused Toya a bit. Nevertheless, he took the umbrella and thanked Akito. For a second, Toya looked in Akito’s eyes, the same way he had caught himself doing during lectures. The same longing.
Then he left; He ran.
Akito stood on the doorstep the entire time until his figure faded into the larger Shibuya landscape. He didn't know what to make of it.
Soon after, Ena rolled down the window of her shitty sedan, huge smoke clouds flowing out into the sky, as her and Mizuki had ended up hotboxing the car with weed since Mizuki was kicked out by Akito after they were found too close for comfort to their room, and also, because Ena wouldn't like having to explain why her room smells like weed (at least more that usual), and why the fire alarm in there went off.
She screamed out the window, somewhat high, “YOU GUYS HAD THAT “ARE WE ABOUT TO KISS BRO” ENERGY!!!!”. Her eyes were horridly red, and Mizuki sat calmly inside, joint in hand, giving Akito one of those, horrible, horrible, shit eating grins. He knew shit was about to go down.
She rolled the window back up, and Akito could hear her coughing like crazy after having had her first breath of fresh air, so she opened the sunroof, and smoke poured out the top.
Back to the present, Akito only had one thing in mind. This was Mizuki’s fault. Not only was their handle, amiazzvids, tagged in the post by Ena, but also because they were in his room yesterday, and he doesn't know what they did, or what they saw. He didn't really want to think about it.
For as long as he had known Mizuki, which was since Ena began her internet journey, and became the most chronically online femcel to grace the planet, they constantly made fun of him whenever Ena ended up sniping him, or whenever he entered her room when they were on call. When he met them in person during his first year at Kamiyama high, he instantly noticed them being very similar. He asked Ena, and she confirmed his suspicions, that the elusive Amia may also be known as Mizuki Akiyama.
Since then, he had become a source of money, pictures, information, Ena, quite really anything they wanted, and he hated it. He didn't really know much about Mizuki’s life before they met as they always dodged the subject like a tactical nuke, and anybody who he talked to didn't let on more than “they didn't have it great”. Perhaps if he knew them, truly, he would perhaps get to understand their fucked up, manipulative ways. They weren't all bad, as a lot of the time they're just people pushed together by chance, not choice. He wanted to know them, but they hid. And hid. And hid. Every part of them was a mystery to him, and that was the worst part.
He would never truly know them. And they could never be anything but everything.
-
“It’s fine Ena. Post it.” groaned Akito, after having another long, much uneeded overthinking session. Ena gave him the stink eye, pissed off at his lack of emotion. “WHAT DO YOU MEAN “fine”??? What do you REALLY think…” she screamed at Akito, just wishing for her to leave his room and get over with it. Akito groaned (again) and gave her a bit more, “okay Ena, its a good post, but also, think about the damn author. They prolly don't wanna get doxxed.” he sighed, trying to dissuade her from posting it as he had suddenly remembered what the hell that blog post would acheive if it was actually posted.
“But gingyyyyy, I need content that’ll keep me relevant…” whined Ena. “You know what, I’ll post whatever I want. Why the hell am I even asking you in the first place? Love ya Aki!” she said, slamming his door shut, and screaming the second she entered her room. Ena wasn't all bad, as she was angel to her friends (except the one with purple hair who was as fake as him) but to him? It’s as if since he was born theres been something about him she just absolutely despises. The two rarely got along, and exchanges like these were common in their household. Another person he wants to understand, his own sister.
Akito laid back in his seat, outstretching his hands to the ceiling, like a cat. He immediately hunched back over to his desk as soon as he heard a ping come from his laptop. He opened nightcord… and ah… it was his proofreader. He didn't actually know who they were, some rando he became friends with on his earlier works.
mermaidsdilemma: 11:27am
yo have you like seen whats up?
Akito opened their message, followed by a screenshot of Ena’s blog post. The damn thing had about two thousand likes and a bajillion more shares. So she did post it. That bitch. The only thing that she removed was Mizuki’s handle from the post, and rambled on a bit more, but other than that it was the same darn thing.

He shut his laptop, head in his hands, screaming into them, rage quitting at life. Another meetup, at 2:00pm. In Shibuya park. He swears to god, if the proofreader is a Mizuki alt account, he’ll commit 9/11.
Yet again, he got himself ready for torture.
-
He left the house, now with his own umbrella to avoid any toya encounters due to rain out of paranoia, and shut the door. Ever since he woke up, Ena had been absolutely yapping with her online friends, and Akito was glad to be able to leave that behind.
As he walked to Shibuya park, a familiar figure came into view; Long green hair, short stature, long floral dress and cream colored cardigan, loafers and leg warmers, it was Kusanagi Nene- no doubt about it. She was standing there, on her phone, tapping very seriously.
As he approached, Nene jumped back a bit at seeing Akito, his ginger aura making her lose aura just being around him. “OH! H-hi Shinonome-kun… didn't expect to run into you here..” she whispered, avoiding eye contact.
Akito continued the rather awkward exchange, “Yeah, I suppose. What are you doing here anyways?” he asked. “Well, I’m waiting for an online friend so we can meet up and get some food or something, you know,” she said. “Really? Because I’m here for the same exact thing.”
Nene’s eyes widen, seeing the bizzare-ness of the whole situation, “Ah, well best of luck with your friend” said Nene with a smile. She tapped at her phone some more, and then Akito’s phone had lit up.
“Oh, I got a message from my online friend, I guess I’ll see ya around Kusanagi-san!” said Akito, as he waved at Nene and walked to the swings to take a rest from all the walking. What the heck is with this weather? Rain then sunshine? Akito is going to kill himself! Author the weather god fr.
mermaidsdilemma: 2:16pm
where tf are you
kenfan07: 2:16pm
here bro
Nene’s phone lit up, a loud ping coming from it. She gave Akito an awkward smile, then silenced her phone.
mermaidsdilemma: 2:17pm
ok but wtf do you look like so I can find you
Another loud ping came from Akito’s phone, Nene paying no attention.
kenfan07: 2:17pm
unfortunately ginger
Nene let out a giggle, as another ping (much more quiet, but still noticeable) came from her phone.
mermaidsdilemma: 2:18pm
LMAOOOOOOO FR?

mermaidsdilemma: 2:20pm

Throughout the whole exchange, when one sent a message, the others phone pinged, and it was a lot of silencing, laughing, and staring. After a while, Akito got sick of it.
“Hey Kusanagi-san! This is prolly really random, but what's your nightcord handle?” shouted Akito from the swing set, where he had been patiently awaiting his proofreader. “Uhh, mermaidsdilemma… w-why?” responded Nene, struggling to raise her voice.
Akito instantly stood up and pointed at Nene, “YOU!”. Nene began to shake, thinking that Akito was going to go on a murderous rampage, but no, he only stopped when he had his pointer finger in her face, and said “So YOU’RE the motherfucker who reads my fics.”
Notes:
so this is the turning point where we stop being so crack and start getting more serious #angst 😔😔

Chapter Text
Nene, shaking, quivering, and dying inside, was ready to kill herself through any means necessary there and then. She just admitted to finding him annoying, and a whole lot of shit that she would never say to his face, so if she became the newest unsolved murder, she wouldn't really be surprised.
Akito put his hands on his hips, and cleared his throat, leaving Nene very much confused. “First of all, I never thought you'd be that much of a bitch behind that timid front. You are such a bitch online, but you know, you really do that well. You’ve roasted me soooooo many times, and you always left me with nothing to say, so like, good for you!” Nene perplexedly stared at Akito’s face with a blank expression, unable to understand what the fuck was going on. How could this illiterate monkey write the equivalent of a modern day Shakespearean epic? He flunked the argumentative essay last week, and even though she proofreads and edits his work, god, it's already incredible. Her job is just to make that incredible into extraordinary.
After zoning out, she snaps back to her unfortunate reality of being harassed by a ginger. Some sick internet freaks would probably kill to be in her place right now…alas. “Wait up, so what you're trying to say is that you DID write that, and that you're KenFan07?”. Akito rushed to put his hands on her mouth, as the neighborhood surrounding Shibuya Park was quite quiet, and what if TOYA was there!
Nene looked Akito dead in the eyes with a blank expression, as Akito felt something…warm. Warm on his hand. Might just be Nene’s breath. Stank ass hoe…wait no its getting warmer, and wet, wait.
“WHAT THE FUCK? DID YOU JUST LICK MY HAND?” screamed Akito from the top of his lungs. Nene pushes away, a devilish grin blooming onto her face, blushing at the absolute stupidity of her ginger escape plan. “Well, I’ve got to go…. soo….. I’m gonna…” before Nene could run, Akito grabbed her wrist. Her eyes lit up in fear, as they were in the middle of the street, and she wasn’t strong enough to free herself from Akito’s grip. “Your bitchass isn’t going anywhere.”
-
“See, I don't wanna be all domineering and fifty shades of gray, but I cannot have you running around ruining my life. It's not like you’d have the balls to tell anyone, but if he finds out, I’m cooked.”. Akito still hadn't let go of Nene’s wrist as he was dragging her to a brunch joint, hoping to discuss things in a more civil manner.
After the waiter gave them a table, a small booth next to the window overlooking the shopping district, he handed them the menus. The menus were glistening, stacks of pancakes, drizzled in syrups and fruits and sweets, even Nene loved them. Akito, the instant he sat down, knew what he wanted to eat. He raised his hand up and the waiter ran back quickly, shocked at his speed. Akito ordering pancakes was like watching a white woman with a pixie cut and a bebe shirt holding a Michael Kors bag order a caramel frappe. Nene refused to order pancakes, instead opting for a milkshake.
“So, as we’re here, what did you want to discuss?” Akito looked up from his menu, looking to both sides checking for spies or bugged microphones. Can’t be too safe. Nene imitates him, putting up the menu too, “Blah blah blah, I wrote fanfiction, and my boytoy is gonna kill me if he finds out!”. Akito snatches the menu from Nene, as she sighs. “Just get over your fear, as you’d be surprised how many people truly do write fanfiction… anyways, what I wanted to discuss was one, how the hell do you want to end this fic, and two, who the hell this man of dreams is. You’d be surprised how invested I really am.”.
“Okay, first of all, we are NOT discussing him …” said Akito dramatically, earning a smirk from Nene, as she leaned in closer, making Akito back up in his seat, at least as much as he could with the table being a booth and all. “Really? this is such a letdown Akito.” she sighed, pretending to be disappointed.
“FINE FINE FINE. I’ll tell you. But you HAVE to promise to keep your mouth shut.” Nene giggled at his dramatic nature, but held out her pinkie. “Okay, I solemnly swear to keep my mouth shut.” Akito looks up at Nene, extending his pinkie, “On your genshin account?”. Nene looked Akito dead in the eyes. “Dude, I wouldn’t swear anything on that even if the world was gonna end. What about my grinding? Thousands of hours? I’m not gonna throw it away just to swear I’ll never talk about your gay porn in public or tell anyone YOU WRITE GAY PORN!!!” Akito ran to cover her mouth again, but it was a futile effort, as he remembered her stunt. He does NOT want more Nene girlspit.
“Just, pinky promise, okay?”
“Pinky promise, whatever.”
The two intertwine their pinkies, and a pink aura begins to emanate from the both as they float out of their seats, Nene’s long hair waving as if it was underwater, being lifted from her seat. She looks around confusedly, but upon looking back at Akito, his stern expression makes her keep her calm. The world turns pink for a second, then they return to the world as it was.
“Okay! So that's basically the same as an NDA, so we should be good!” said Akito happily, as if not realizing that some dark magic shit just happened. Nene looks around at the cafe, and she's confused on how these people continue on as if her and Akito hadn't just done what they had done.
God was Nene already done with this, but she’s been to other dimensions with sentient vocal synthesizers, so it’ll be fine….
Out from hiding in the booth behind the two, the waiter trembles out, holding what looks like food of the gods, ambrosia and nectar, stacked upon itself, drizzling, exuding, breathing, loving. Akito’s eyes light up at seeing the fluffy tower of pancakes, covered in berries, honey, condensed milk, sugar, chocolate syrup, and really anything that would have made Emu tweak out. The waiter carefully placed the absolute monstrosity that was Akito’s order on the table, and gave Nene her milkshake, a drastic difference in size. He looked at the two with a fearful expression and scurried back to the kitchen, as such a promise can have… effects on the human psyche.
“Well, are you going to eat?” said Akito, mouth already full of shit. “Akito, we came here to have a civil conversation, not to come get cavities and gain 20 pounds from a meal. You’re GOING to tell me about that boy, whether you like it or not. We swore, remember?” said Nene. Trying to see his face through the comically massive pancake stack.
“Mrrhdgffff.”
“Okay Akito, what the fuck. You talk without food in your mouth, or last least with a decent amount of food in it.”
Akito swallowed, wiped his mouth, and pushed his stack of pancakes away. He put his hand on the table, leaned over to Nene, and looked her dead in the eyes.
“I like Toya.”
She slammed her fist against the table, and pointed at Akito, screaming “I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOUR GAY ASS WAS UP TO SOMETHING WITH HIM!”. Practically dancing in her seat, she was forced to settle down due to the fact that public situations exist, and additionally Akito was being somewhat serious. “Uhm, ahem. Pardon my behavior. It’s just really hard not to celebrate when the suspicions I had were true. Are you dating him yet?”.
This time, Akito choked for realsies. Not on air. “Holy fucking shit Akito, are you alright?!”. He reached for the milkshake, taking a pretty fat sip of it to wash down his larger than regular bite of diabetes. “Yeah, I think I am, COUGH, maybe just, don’t be that loud, next time…” Nene looked around, and a few kids and assorted people around the cafe were now looking at them. She dug herself in her sweater, cheeks red, trying to make herself disappear from the situation. With a call for a waiter, they bagged up their food and left.
Walking out into the street, they had finally escaped. “Thanks for… that.” whispered Nene shyly. She was kind of embarrassed about the whole encounter with Akito, if she was being honest. “Don’t mention it, as someone was careful as me, I’ve been pretty safe about not revealing my secret identity.” bragged Akito, putting his hands behind his head to stretch.
“Keep talking about it then someone might find out.”, A smirk grew onto Nene’s face as she eyed Akito.
“And
now
you’re back to your usual, bitchy, self. I should have left you there…”
“Well, you can’t spell, so leave me for dead, leave your little writing career bye-bye!”
“Okay, where were we?”
“Him.” said Akito, taking a pause. Once he really thought about it, this was the first time he had truly, honestly opened up to someone about his feelings for Toya. It was complicated. She already knew, what else could happen? Nevertheless, he dove into it.
“Yeah… I don’t really know where to start with him. I guess it was when I found him? It was just so admirable, what he was doing, and how it was all just to piss off his dad. The worst part is that he’s good at it. I asked him to sing with me and the rest is history, but, I don’t know, are we just friends, more than that? He really is the most beautiful boy in the world but, I just could never bring myself to let him know, I really do love him a lot, and for who he is, but I’m afraid that he wouldn’t exactly like me for uhm… multiple… of my traits…”
“So what I’m getting from this is that you aren’t just gay, but super gay.”
“I SPILL MY GUTS TO YOU AND THIS IS WHAT I GET?” screamed Akito, slamming his hands onto the table
“Yeah, pretty much.”
Akito pushed his plate to the side, and asked for the bill.
“Akito, what the fuck.”
“What? I need the energy! It’s like how my mom says that I’m a growing teenage boy who needs energy to keep going!”. Nene scoffs at him, picks up her bag, and walks out of the restaurant with Akito.
-
“I’ll be back dad.”
Toya ran out of the house, locked the door, and went on his way downtown. He was out to get some ingredients for lunch that were missing, since his father had been drilling him about how his cooking “tastes like ass”.
He had his headphones on, and was making record time in the spring sun, and he was about to reach his favorite grocery store when he felt the presence of… something.
A certain ginger was prancing around town… with…
Nene?
They were practically attached at the shoulders, giggling and laughing together, walking down main street. He was sure of it. Completely sure. He turned pale at the thought. There’s no logical conclusion.
Akito turned around and caught a glimpse of Touya. His eyes were welling up with tears, and before he could say hello, he turned away, and ran back home. “Hey! Toya! What’s up man!” shouted Akito, trying to get his attention. Toya simply continued on quickly to avoid any and all people, including Akito.
“Maybe you were right, Akito. I don't think he likes fanfiction authors if he’s running away from you.”
Then he realized what just happened.
“Oh my god. Nene. I need to go. Right now. I’m sorry.” Akito ran away from Nene, going straight back to his home. He couldn't bear to think about what he had just done. To ruin what he loved like that. He could feel every vein in his head contorting together to make him feel this way. It was his fault.
Before he reached home, he was already somewhere else. The residential streets turned to alleys, to streets of street art, until he reached the Crase Cafe.
“Oh my god. I’ve been kidnapped by AI. Next thing you know I’ll have a microchip when I leave here. Oh my god….” said Akito to himself, as a certain lady approached him.
“KAITO! We have customers!” shouted Meiko from the porch of the Crase Cafe. “Okay hon- I MEAN MEIKO.”. Meiko shot Kaito a look of death, and continued on with her motherly sentiments.
“Hi Akito, what brings you here?” asked Meiko, crouching down to reach him at the ball he’s made of himself on the floor. “Nothing, just that I’ve been kidnapped here as I ran away while crashing out over making my crush a crashout. Nothing big. Just me losing my fucking mind because if he finds out I write gay fanfic he’s gonna run away from me again!”
“Damn, he does have problems!”
“KAITO.”
“Sorry…”
Meiko helped Akito up and gave him a hug. “It’ll be fine Akito. If he loves you, then he’ll love all of you. All the word count, kudos, and dead dove do not eat there is to you. And I’m sure of it. I’m sure he loves you, just by the way he looks at you.” said Meiko. She held up Akito for a while more, before the two pulled away.
“Thanks Meiko, that made me feel better. I really, really appreciate it.”Meiko smiled, and walked over to the cafe. “C’mon, to celebrate your first boyfriend, I’ll make you a drink on the house! Just say the word. A little lemon or a juicy grapefruit.”
“Meiko, your knowledge of fanfiction terms genuinely does astound me and surprise me.”
-
Nene had her headset on, and was clicking away on a controller. Every movement was calculated, predicted, meant to be. To Nene, her games were art, as silly as it seemed. There was a science behind it. The only one who understood her as well, was Toya. She had her ideas as to why he had gotten so good at gaming. Maybe the isolation from his father, the piano and violin skills, sheer luck. It was nice having someone like him.
She logged into the game, and joined a server. Before long, Toya had connected to the server and the two were gaming away in their own world. Nene liked to play games with the lights off. It helped her concentrate, but she strained her eyes more. Her parents always complained about how it destroyed her vision. She had her bluelight glasses on right now just for the occasion.
“Toya, turn on voice chat. We’ll be able to win a lot easier if we can talk” said Nene, speaking into her mic. She waited a while, yet no response from Toya. She continued playing, until she got a moment to focus on her words.
“Do you not want to talk? Something with your dad? Just let me know because I don’t want to bother you if you would rather not talk.” she said. The two avatars stood pixels away. A few moments passed by, and she finally heard the ping that had meant that Toya had unmuted.
“You know what happened. You were there.” said Toya, blankly. He was usually calm during their gaming sessions, as to not disturb his dad or to lose focus, but this time, it was something other than that, some emptiness gnawing at the boy.
“Toya, what do you mean by that? I saw you running today, but I just thought you were somewhere in a hurry, and- SHIT” Nene cut off her sentence when the two were attacked by an enemy from the other team. Together, they neutralized the threat, and continued to search the map for other players while defending their base.
“Nene, I don’t want you to try to protect me. I’ve been through shit, and whatever happened between the two of you today, it wouldn’t phase me.” said Toya, again, with something unseen tugging at him.
“Seriously, can you stop being cryptic? If you want to tell me just be straight up, because I had told you already that all that happened is that I saw you run away from me and Akito today. Yeah, I was worried, but that’s just who I am. That’s all I see it for, and if you have something ele to say, then tell me, please, I don’t want to be a roadblock to you.”
“I know you were with him. I saw you two in the window, so close. Sorry, this is probably an invasion of your privacy, I would have assumed you two would have wanted to stay private for longer, or something of the sort-”
“Toya, what the hell are you talking about, we went out as friends-”
“I loved him, Nene. But now he’s yours. So you know, what can I do. I’ll send you my blessings.”
“...”
The game went on as usual, the two teaming up to defeat the enemy team, but in the long run, they lost. The enemies got to their base. They destroyed it. Toya received the losing MVP. They were silent up until after the ratings went up.
“I’m sorry Toya, but you have one thing wrong.”
“I told you- don’t lie to me-”
“But I’m not! I never kissed him, held his hand, went out with him, you’ve got it all wrong. The day I say I want that disgusting ginger, shoot me. He’s horrible. And another thing, I need you to truly keep this under wraps, is how much he loves you. It’s sickening. We went out to a cafe, and I could not keep track of the times he’s mentioned you, it’s tooth rotting fluff. Seriously, you two are the most in love idiots I’ve seen before Rui and Tsukasa, and those guys don’t even try to hide it. Ugh, all these homos are going to make me throw up…”
“...”
Toya really didn’t have any words. He didn’t know what to or to not believe. He’d been so fragile recently, he was slowly breaking. Everything was going by so fast, could it not speed by? He wants it to last, why can’t it last.
He turned off the computer.
Notes:
i hate these two bruh why are they like this
Chapter 7
Summary:
shinome akito has anger management issues. siblings will shine through
Notes:
almost there! the story is almost wrapping up! it feels crazy to be able to say that as a god-awful inconsistent author, but what can I say? I had a lot of fun writing this chapter, and it's a bit longer than what I usually do, but I think that for a climax like this, there are just some details I can't afford to skimp out on. all the yapping aside, enjoy!
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Akito didn’t really know who he was anymore, being in this mess. Not even the fame of Vivid Bad Squad messed with his head this badly anymore.
Akito would be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy writing. Better yet, it was one of the few things aside from singing, performing, and bedrotting (oh and Toya!) that he genuinely enjoyed with his entire heart. He came home excited to get back to his home laptop to work on upcoming chapters, to check his email during passing period to see the comments people had left him, about how his story had made their day, or other heartwarming content. It wasn’t that he didn’t have friends at school, or that he was alone, but the constant influx of validation and notifications was definitely a bump up in his dopamine.
“Jesus, Akito, what’s gotten into you? You’re smiling. It’s disgusting” Nene scowled at Akito’s smile. She was right, it was disgusting, disgustingly infectious to see how he was so earnestly joyful, despite everything that had been happening to him. “Well, you can go fuck yourself Nene, I’m doing something known as enjoying myself.” She turned away from him, laughing, “As if you’d know what that means.”
The two were laughing and bantering as they walked down the street, the sun preparing to dip under the horizon. It was rare for Nene to be so open and carefree, she usually had a calculated demeanor, quiet, observant, but never had Akito expected her to be so joyous, so… funny? She really didn’t really seem like the kind of person to be calling him a manwhore casually while walking down the street with no remorse at all.
Akito walked down the street with Nene to their starting point, Shibuya park, where they had discovered each other’s true identities hours prior. “Well, this is where it ends, no?” Akito puts his hand behind his neck, looking down at the floor awkwardly. He has a tendency to pull that emote out whenever he doesn’t know what to do, which is most of the time, casually clueless of the situation around him. “I guess so, I surprisingly did enjoy your company, Shinonome-kun.” Nene also looks down at her feet, as the whole situation is oh-so awkward, “You don’t hafta call me that Nene, we’re more than acquainted, we’re allowed to be on a first name basis.” Nene laughed, “So I can call you a whore casually again?” Her eyes perked up and that same shit-eating grin on her face appeared, the one before she said something really foul, “No, anything but that! Fuck, now you’re making reconsider what I just said,” Akito sighed, “But nevertheless, I’m glad I got to know you better, through your twisted, fucked up ways.”
Akito held out his hands out as an invitation into an embrace, which Nene reluctantly let herself into. Akito was slightly leaning down, as to the significant height difference between the two. Nene was resting her head lightly on Akito’s shoulder when she heard something in her ear, “shortass.” Nene instantly pulled back and pointed at him, taking a defensive stance, “I KNEW you were up to something! You would never hug me to say goodbye unless you were planning to say some bullshit to me. God, this has been tedious.” Nene sighed, but through everything, she still smiled back at Akito, “Okay, I better get home, I haven’t finished Mr. Kitazawa’s study guide and I’m 100% sure the geo test is gonna kick my ass. My parents mostly let me do whatever as long as I don’t turn into an academic fuck-up. Goodbye, Akito.” She waved goodbye to him, and the two went their separate ways.
—
“I’m back, mom!” shouted Akito from the stairwell up into the condo that was his home. His family owned the 2nd floor, and there was another family living on the following floors. It was in a nice area, near the main hub of Shibuya, which made getting places fairly easy for the Shinonome kids (that is, if Ena were to actually leave her room to touch grass once in a while) and made it a great crash pad for Toya when shit went down with his dad. He clicked the door open and ran up the stairs, to a bustling living room.
Oh.
There they were.
Glistening.
Shining.
Without fear.
Without faltering, because that's what they are. They’re an actor.
“Oh, little bro, you made it back! Hey hey, join in! Ena’s mom made us dinner, it’s delish! We were just talking about you, y’know! Come on!” shouted Mizuki at Akito, who stayed pale faced at the base of the stairs. All the color was sucked out of his face as he turned to face the only thing he truly feared at this moment.
The one and only Mizuki Akiyama.
Reluctantly, he slowly stepped into the living room, feeling each step take off years of his life. His mom came up to say hello to him, the two hugged and she gave Akito a kiss on the cheek, “How are you? Was your hangout good?” said Akito’s mother, looking up at her son, “Everything was fine ma, I had a lot of fun with Kusanagi-chan from school.” His mother applauded, looking at him with a large smile on her face, “Akito! I’m so glad you’re finally hanging out with other kids from your school besides An and Toya, you need to see some fresh faces! Maybe we should see her at the theme park! You know the library, they do-” A flush grew onto his cheeks at his mother’s growing volume, their little chat becoming more and more accessible as ammo for Mizuki. “Mom, you don’t have to, Kusanagi is just a friend, I’m just, gonna go grab a bite and eat in my room…” Akito attempted to sneak away, but his mom dragged him back,
“Hey! You haven’t even greeted Akiyama or your sister! She left her room for a FRIEND, Akito, this is big! So please, just stay, even for five minutes” How could he refuse his own mother?
“Okay, I’m just gonna drop my bag in my room and I’ll be right……..” Before he could finish his sentence, he was out of the living room and into his room. His mom pinched the skin between her eyes and let out a disappointed sigh as she sat back down in the living room with the other two.
Slam!
Akito panted behind the door to his room, pressing his back to it. He slowly slid down the floor where he stared at the wall, trying to stabilize the beating in his chest, to rationalize his thoughts. It was just his brain talking, he thought, trying to drag him down. Mizuki knew nothing, they wouldn’t snoop around in his things, that's just a violation of his privacy for gods sake! If he had money and a lawyer, that could get Mizuki jail time, but now that he thinks about it, there are so many other things that Mizuki has done that would get them a more outstanding sentence. Nevermind that. All that matters is why the hell they’re in his house, so relaxed, so happy. Mizuki doesn’t just smile, it’s because they know something? Or do they not? He couldn’t make up his fucking mind.
Akito rubbed his eyes aggressively, trying to de-escalate the situation, at least what the situation was to him in his head. It was a sunday. There was no way Mizuki would stay over, and he would finish the fic. He had to believe he would.
He threw his bag to the side, stood up, and opened the door.
“Well hello there, lil’ bro! Saw you dash to your room, anything wrong?” grinned Mizuki. He was not dealing with this shit today. No fucking way he would after what Ena posted. “What do you want, I don’t have all day.” Mizuki’s demeanor didn’t change, still as bubbly and happy as they were when he got into the house. “Nothing at all, I swear! I just thought it was weird how pale your face went when you got home, haha!” Mizuki had a carefree, joyful laugh, but in the dark hallway, all Akito got from it was malice hidden under layers and layers of a delicately crafted poker face. “I don’t get you. How can you be so cruel and laugh it off. Genuinely, what the fuck do you feel when you ruin lives? I really want to fucking know whats so great.” Akito bumped Mizuki’s shoulder, and walked into the living room, where his sister and mother were.
Mizuki stood there in the darkness of the hallway for a moment before returning back as everything was before, except there was no way to get there. Even they were confused as to how Akito was acting. It couldn’t be their little hangout. Even then, that was just the usual kind of jokesy dirt that they have on everyone. Whatever it is, the floor is glass now, and one wrong step will have them fall to the unimaginable.
Akito rejoined his mother and sister on the couch, with a full plate of food. Even if he had eaten that fat stack of pancakes, his stomach would still have space for more food. Seriously, what is with this guy and bullshit cartoon logic following him everywhere? The three made small talk as Akito ate his dinner.
Mizuki sat down across from the coffee table, with things a lot more tense as they were before. “Mizuki, oh thank god you’re okay, I thought Akito had done something to you!” Exclaimed Ena through mouthfuls of food. Mizuki laughed, and curled up on the seat where they were, “I think you should worry more about me doing something to Akito, those noodly hands could never!” The group laughed, including his mother, to Mizuki’s comment about his physique. It was true, he was relatively thin for a boy his age, but not to the point where he would be considered dangerously thin. Still, it stung.
He could go for even lower hanging fruit, the untucked mess under Mizuki’s skirt that didn’t need an introduction, but Akito is a bitch, not a transphobe, and what if he outed Mizuki? Then they would be even. Two teens, ostracized from society for the rest of their days as highschoolers, not that he would care if they came out, he knows way too many gay people to care, and they aren’t even out to him, so imagine the horror on their face. It would be satisfying, but again, he has morals. He takes the insult like a stone. “Akito, are you alright honey?” His mother puts her hand on his shoulder, rubbing the spot as to comfort him. “No, everything's fine, just thinking about homework-”
At that moment, Mr. Shinonome walked into the condo, looking at the scene. Akito’s mother ran up to him, the two sharing a passionate kiss before the two ran to their bedroom. “We’re gonna be getting ready for our dinner together, once we leave, Ena is in charge!” The couple ran to their room, excitedly, as the three stayed in silence. Akito took it as an opportunity to leave. He felt a tug at his shirt, which turned into a hand on his wrist. “Where do you think you’re going? You got home twenty minutes ago, but now you’re trying to disappear into that cave again? No hey? No ‘hello sister dearest’?” Ena looked at Akito, who was mostly just annoyed he had to deal with all this. He broke out of his sisters’ grip and went to his room with his plate.
He walked down the hallway, and slammed the door shut. He didn’t even want to speak anymore after anything he’d done. It was as if the whole thing with Nene that went down today never even happened. God, he was just ready to turn off his brain for a few more hours until they left, if they ever did at all. He knew the situation didn’t have to be this bad, and yes, he might be blowing it up in his head, but it wasn’t like any of this wasn’t happening. God, what was he doing with himself.
He threw his food on his desk and took his laptop into his bed, the lights still off. He opened up his laptop, and the blinding white light stung his eyes. His vision wasn’t incredible, but he refused to get glasses. He wouldn’t let his image be tarnished just now, and he couldn’t ever work up the courage for contacts. He has no idea how Kohane does it everyday.
He enters his password, and rushes to his email. It’s the only stable thing he has.

A small smile crept onto his face, as he read the sweet words the commenter had left touched his heart. It was nice knowing that such small bits and pieces of text could change his state completely.
Akito read through a few more comments in his email before getting back into work mode. His fanfiction wasn’t done yet. He clicked over to his word documents and began at where he left off. He needs to start writing longer chapters. That was his resolution for the new year, actually. He had forgotten about his endeavors on this god-forsaken website, and told himself to do better.
Now he’s back to where he started. The clicks of a computer, clacking of keys, echoing through a hostile home, reaching every nook and cranny the house has to offer. It wasn’t even dark out yet, barely 8pm, yet he was trying to get back to how it felt, so unbothered, so unafraid. Back when he was honest in his work. Now he just wanted to finish his work to never have to think about it again.
Once he finishes, the popularity will die down, he knows it. Once it’s over, Mizuki and Ena will stop pressing, VividFancon will never break another world record, he won’t see cosplays and art on billboards as he walked home, cruel reminders of what he has made. Of what he is.
Akito selected the entire chapter, and pressed delete on his keyboard. He wasn’t getting anywhere with this. He had to make it perfect. He couldn’t just rush it. People are watching. People like that commenter will jump at updates, and if the updates are good enough, they’ll comment. He’ll make a difference. Why did he even start writing? He tried to keep going, to keep clacking away on his keyboard, but his fingers failed him. Every word he wrote, every line was misplaced, his timing was wrong, everything felt disjointed, he couldn’t find himself in the shapes of the letters.
Heels came, they went. Doors opened, closed, he heard the intersection change about enough times to drive someone mad, and yet, he still didn’t have a finished product. Every chapter he wrote was terrible. Every explanation of how the characters felt, of their monologues, it was bland, sour. It had nothing. The words were simply words.
All he had to do is to make the two main characters share a passionate conversation, and a kiss, something he’d done enough times. Right now, it felt like a death sentence. The words circled his head, the ideas they flowed, but the page was blank. All he ended with was a line, the line he knew he wanted the protagonist to say since he started, the words that he’d been waiting for him to say since the beginning of this project,
“Now I can love you. All of you.”
That was what the secondary protagonist said before they kissed after a large fight, where secrets and past lives were unraveled, where their love for each other was tested.
It felt like more of a cruel joke he had set himself up into now.
He checked the time- shit. It was 11:30pm, almost midnight, and he hadn’t showered. He hadn’t even gotten ready for school yet. Tomorrow was Monday. He would have to face people he knew again tomorrow, after everything. Who knows how much worse it would be, having to face the love of his life with the guilt of a killer on his back.
He was sweating, throwing his laptop to the side, rubbing his eyes. He did it to make sure there wouldn’t be any tears.
He heard the sounds from outside, still, a bright conversation. He would shower. That would be all he did, then he would sleep, then during classes, he would finish the work. That would be his plan. If he couldn’t focus now, he would focus later, skip a bit of every class, much to An’s distaste, and finish. Make sure everything is perfect. Crystal clear.
He grabbed his clothes and a towel, and headed up the hallway to the bathroom, walking as quietly as possible to avoid any and all interactions with the two ‘enjoying their lives’, if that’s what you call getting alcohol poisoning. Akito attempted to push the door open, but it wouldn’t budge. Odd, he thought. Sometimes the door got stuck, but it wasn’t a common occurrence.
He attempted to push through, but the door was jammed. He fought with the door, until he heard it.
“Oh fuck- BLEgh, urGHHHaa,.... Hah… hah…. URK-”
Mizuki was throwing up in the bathroom, with Ena calling them from the living room. “Ena, I’ll be quick okay! I’ll let you shit innaminit- BLEhbaugh…” They called out through the door to Akito, who they believed to be Ena. Ena, in the living room, noticed the confusion, and ran over to the bathroom door, where she came face to face with Akito. Her face was flushed, a sign of one too many shots, but she wasn’t drunk to the point of no return. “Aki, what are you doing. Just leave Mizuki alone.” “But I need to shower! It’s practically midnight already!” Akito raised his voice at Ena, who didn’t react in the slightest. Akito didn’t know if the alcohol or just her being used to it was responsible for her reaction. “Akito, you smell all the time. I don’t think your boyfriend would care in the slightest.” She grinned a bit, leaning against the wall for support.
“God, what the fuck is wrong with you? I told you to drop it already! He’s not my fucking boyfriend, I would care if you stopped being such a fucking bitch all the goddamn time, it’s like they pay you for the insult.” His face was heating up.
Oh, he had gone and done it.
“Bitch? Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to cunt? I’m the one in charge? Remember? You’re the fucker who’s had an attitude since he stepped into this building! I don’t know what the fuck I did to you but I want to know what the hell you think gives you the right to act like this all of a sudden?” Ena’s face contorted into something completely different from what she had shown to Akito just moments prior after hearing what he had to say.
“Everything! Every single fucking thing you and that pink haired bitch-” She cut off Akito, “DO NOT bring in Mizuki to this argument. They fucking did nothing, and I’m not gonna let your pissy attitude-”
“THEY DID DO EVERYTHING! Every single fucking thing that’s been driving me insane is their fucking fault! All this shit is theirs and theirs only to blame, and I’m not that surprised knowing they associate with a piece of shit like you, Ena.”
Just then out of the bathroom, shakily, came Mizuki.
“Can we calm down? If I did anything could we please talk it over? I don’t want anything-” Their arms were in front of them, as if they were bracing for impact. They shakily left the bathroom and ducked next to Ena.
“YOU FUCKING BITCH. I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS-” Akito’s voice continued to get louder, with every single word coming out of his mouth.
“Akito stop, I’m mad as fuck but I don’t want to be doing this shit anymore, just leave Mizuki alone-”
“Like hell I’m going to! They tried to ruin my fucking life!
“Hey, if I did anything, could we please talk it out-”
“No! I want you to tell me every single fucking little thing about your fuckass motivations and the why, and the, fuck I just can’t” Akito swung his hand at where Mizuki was standing. His face looked like something none of them had ever seen. He was convinced. Completely.
The punch landed on Ena’s face. She let out a piercing scream as her face was knocked to the side, and she fell back onto Mizuki.
There was blood on Akito’s hands. The blood was coming from Ena’s nose, where Akito’s hand had landed. He stayed in the position he was for a few seconds while the adrenaline coursing through his body settled down.
He looked at the two, Ena holding onto Mizuki, and Mizuki, looking up at Akito. Mizuki looking at Akito the same way he had seen them. A pale face.
Pure fear.
—
Akito looked down at his hands. There was a smeared drop of blood on his knuckles, and it hit him. His vision began to blur as the tears muddied into his hands. What was he.
He dashed out of the house, dropping his clothing and towel, running to the door with just his phone and the clothes he had been wearing earlier. He kicked on his shoes, running down the stairs and into the cold of the night. He couldn’t bear to look at what he had done. It reminded him too much of the past. Of that night.
“Hey get back here!”
He couldn’t fathom the idea that he did that to someone he loved. Let alone someone like Toya, to Toya. He pulled his hoodie strings and walked faster, but he didn’t even know where he was going. He walked, and walked, and walked until he arrived at a lonely Shibuya park.
He looked out into the distance. So many lights, but here. He could go anywhere he wanted, but home. So many buts, exceptions. He pulled himself together, and opened his phone. They were all calls from his sister. He ignored them. He sat down on a swing set and let himself rock back and forth… back… and forth.
He thought about himself, about where he was, what he had done. This wasn’t the first time he had gone on a late night walk. He had many times before, when he didn’t know what was what, when he didn’t know if this was the right life for him, if life was right for him.
It was too late, he had something, a reason. Thoughts like that are useless now. All he could do is swing back and forth, and hope for a miracle. His phone began ringing again. It would be useless to check it now. He should just mute it.
He picked up his phone. It was Toya.
He almost dropped his phone, practically juggling the thing before he pressed the accept call button. “H-hello? Toya, why are you calling me this late? I hope it was just an accident, haha!” There he was, back to normal, like he was programmed. “Ena called me. So did Akiyama. They told me they were worried and didn’t know where you were. I thought I could at least be of some use.” Toya spoke coldly, and quietly. It was understandable. His father would throw another fit if Toya was heard this late speaking to a friend. “Don’t speak about yourself like that, you’re like, my best friend. Tell them I’m at Shibuya park, being some loser, or whatever Ena would like to call me, be that a slur I can’t reclaim.”
“But Akito, are you not bise-”
“THAT’S BESIDES THE POINT.”
“I see. Well, make sure to get home safely, and whatever happens, just know I’ll be on your side. Good night, Akito.” Beep. Their conversation had ended, just like that, and in a matter of minutes, Ena had shown up at Shibuya park, still in her jirai getup, walking around in heels for god’s sake, sticking out worse than he would tomorrow at school.
“Ah! There you are!” she screamed, running over to the playground where Akito sat quietly. Her heels dug into the sand, making her tread to the swingset more difficult than it had to be. She held a bag full of ice to her nose, which had long already stopped bleeding. Whatever she was about to do, he was ready. He deserved all of it.
SMACK!
“That’s what you get for hitting me, a minority, a neurodiverse jirai-key hikikomori lesbian!” she said proudly, after striking Akito across the face. Akito remained indifferent to the pain, the sting of the strike against his skin buzzing and tingling. “And this is what you get for being my brother.” She wrapped her free arm around her brother, who jolted at the sudden touch. Akito didn’t understand how to react. Why was she hugging him? She out of all people should be mad, mad enough to kill, but why not now? Why not when he deserved it more than he ever has.
He let himself fall into his sister’s touch, leaning into her shoulder. “I’m sorry. I really am. I wasn’t thinking, was I? Mizuki explained everything. They realized it the second you tried to punch them. It was the stuff on your computer? Longer than my Kwitetrap document?” she let out a soft laugh. “And I thought that Yuki was difficult, but god, Mizuki fucked up, I can’t even lie. She’s getting a piece of my mind and no free subscription to my patreon where I post my nicer pictures.”
“The ones you spent super long taking on our family vacation when we went to Mexico? The ones creeps pay for?” Ena pulled away instantly, looking him dead in the eyes. “How the hell do you think I pay for my clothing? Getting a…. job….. is so not for me? Can you imagine me? E-employed?” Ena shuddered at the thought. “But seriously, can we go back home. I don’t hate you, if it’s what you want to hear. I’m just moderately pissed off and feel like you might owe me a little something something, especially if your boy- i mean friend has anything to spare from his arcade days……. Ehhh? Ehhh?” she raised her eyebrows with each ‘ehh’ she said, until Akito reluctantly agreed. “As long as you don’t leak any of my other information, I’d be happy, but I guess it’s time to come to terms with my chronic visiting of the archive, don’t you agree?”.
The two shared a laugh, and walked home, Ena’s heels making her complain the whole way home, much to Akito’s annoyance.
Notes:
