Work Text:
Vil Schoenheit had an interesting relationship with mirrors. He didn’t hate them, no, he had to use them too often for him to be capable of hating them.
It was just the things he could see in those mirrors that weirded him out for a time.
The first time he was made aware that no, not everyone could see the aura like things around people in mirrors was when he was very young, around 6 or so.
When he asked his father about the bright crimson outline on his person that took up a lot of space (because that varied too- there were seven colors as far as he noticed, orange and purple being rarer than the other five, but these things varied in brightness and wideness) he just stared at Vil like he said something weird, and then took him to a doctor.
It was not a fun experience. They tested him for a lot of things, among which colorblindness came up - but when they couldn’t find anything, they’ve just written it off as a child’s imagination.
Vil knew better, but even as small as he was then, he understood that he should not tell anyone else about it.
His father never brought it up after that - and Vil would think that he forgot about his son having a weird thing about mirrors, but sometimes he catches his father looking at him with an odd gaze.
So Vil just learned to deal with it. It wasn’t like it could impact his budding career as an actor, and it could just be connected to his not yet fully bloomed magic. He just went on with his life.
At least he would have, had he not come across one of the most infuriating people in all Twisted Wonderland - Neige LeBlanche. It’s not even that the boy was his exact opposite on their roles (perhaps in another world he would be even more angry to get most of the villain roles, but here… it just feels like these roles are filling something up in him temporarily), no, it’s just that Neige has this innocent aura that you can feel from just glancing at him - but Vil knows better.
Because when he looked in the mirror the black haired boy was surrounded by indigo - not particularly big, but a little bit brighter than average. And it annoyed Vil to no end, because was everybody this blind? (Would he be this blind to his true nature without his vision?)
And Vil, he let this annoyance turn into budding hatred. But for this time period, it was just budding, maybe barely a bloom, and it could easily freeze and die.
And Night Raven College proved to be what he needed. The mirror that did the sorting allowed him to easily observe his fellow student’s - and to make notes on the potential dangers. (And if he felt some sort of elation - and familiarity, oddly enough - at having found three others with the same brightness and amount of aura - although different colors - then it’s a secret between him and the dojo.)
And his first year was very interesting, and he was very happy learning new things about magic and the theory behind it - even if the more complex spells had to wait for the next year.
Vil thanked every god out there that nothing catastrophic happened in his acting career either - though he was not yet sure what to feel about Rook, because on one hand he was loyal to him, but on the other - to what extent? He could feel something from the other man, and him having a wide yellow aura did not help. (He mostly kept him around for the familiarity - although he couldn’t explain that one, so he just pretended it was for the attention)
But then came his second year, and he noticed the three new students who were like the missing pieces - they had the same brightness, the same amount, but in the remaining four colors - but he had no idea what kind of puzzle the seven of them made up.
So Vil became stressed thinking about it, and the harder materials, while fun, weren’t helping his case at all. If this wasn’t enough for his plate, he had an important filming coming up in the breaks and whenever he was allowed out - and that added irritation and seeing Neige weren’t helping his case either.
Vil’s second year at NRC was just a rollercoaster of stress, irritation, and the ever-bigger growing hate.
But his third year was his worst and best.
When he heard about Riddle’s Overblot, he acted like it was just what it should be - a concern for a fellow, but distant, Housewarden. But in the next meeting he checked in a mirror - and he was relieved to find Riddle’s aura intact, but somehow feeling complete and connected to Kalim’s.
He did the same after that damned Spelldrive Tournament, and was not surprised to find the three of them connected.
He was more worried about Azul, as he felt some sort of weird kinship with the man - but yet again, the only thing he could find was a new bond with the others.
Vil wasn’t really worried about Jamil - he did not know the boy, and he cared not for him. But Kalim, he was worried about. The two seemed close, and he didn’t want anything to happen to his fellow Housewarden, didn’t want to see anything happening to that beautiful combination of orange and purple.
But his worries towards them were not unfounded, but unneeded - but other than these, his life was just even more stressful with the upcoming Festival, he was neck deep in needing to prepare.
Yet all his careful planning went awry as he was defeated - by Neige and RSA! He was just sending a little bit of poison, it wouldn’t have affected much, just his aura!
But he Overblotted.
And when Vil came to, he woke to find four people in his room, and more memories than he would like right now, but he just smiled serenely at the others.
“I apologize for making you wait for so long.”
Kalim just giggled at him, and bounced at his heels, arms outstretched, with familiar Flames on his hands.
“No problem Senpai, but I think it’s time for a Bond, no? You look like you need it!”
And Vil felt his smile become more real.
And while ignoring Riddle’s intense stare, Leonas twitching ears and tail and Azul’s chuckle, he accepted the hands, taking them into his own, and finally.
Finally, Fon was home with his fellow Elements and his Sky.
Now if only they could get back their missing pieces…
