Chapter 1: Curiosity Killed the Cat
Chapter by Anything_Else (our_sin)
Chapter Text
Stiles pretended to be asleep as Jordan, his older brother, opened the door to check on him. He had heard the call downstairs, there was a search party for half of a body in the preserve that required most of the Beacon Hills Sheriff’s Department. Jordan never took night shifts, given he had Stiles to take care of, but as a sheriff’s deputy sometimes it just couldn’t be helped on the more serious cases. Just like this one.
When Jordan was finally gone and he heard the door to the apartment being closed he jumped out of bed and rushed to put on some real clothes. He had never been awake to hear the actual calls before, the ones that his brother was needed on despite being off-duty, so for once he could actually follow behind him to make sure the man was safe. He never knew their mom, their dad died when he was six, and their grandparents died before even Jordan was born, so he would make sure that his last and only family was safe.
Stiles was a surprise baby, Jordan told him once. Their mom got pregnant with him when she was forty-five and their dad was fifty-one. Despite the risk and their age their parents went forward with the pregnancy. Claudia Stilinski died shortly after giving birth on April 8th of 2001. Despite his grief and less than healthy coping mechanism their dad loved and cared for them deeply and did what he could to provide for his baby boy and teenage son. John Stilinski died of a heart attack on May 18th of 2007, leaving a nineteen, almost twenty, year old Jordan to take care of his six-year-old little brother and to leave behind his dream of joining the army.
Stiles owed everything to his family so the least he could do was watch from the sidelines and make sure his big brother stayed alive.
When he was finally done getting dressed he rushed to the front window of the apartment to check and make sure the cruiser was out of the parking lot. After he confirmed it was gone he rushed out the door, making sure to lock it behind him, before grabbing his bike -a gift from Jordan for his birthday earlier this year- from next to the door and going downstairs as quietly as he could. The last thing he needed was the nosey old lady in the apartment a couple doors down rating him out.
He didn’t need anything to help him on his way to the preserve, other than the flashlight he had taped on the bike a couple of months ago to help see, as he knew the way by heart. Him and Jordan went there on his brother’s days off as it was a good way to tucker out a hyperactive, ADHD riddled ten-year-old and help keep a healthy twenty-four-year-old in shape. Or at least that’s what Jordan says.
It takes him longer than he’d like to get to the preserve, almost forty minutes according to his watch, and he silently curses about how far ahead Jordan must be by now. Not wanting to linger much longer he rips the flashlight off his bike before setting out into the woods and trying to locate the barking of cadaver dogs or the lights carried by Deputies roaming the woods.
The first thirty minutes of his search are fruitless as he wanders aimlessly through the trees. He didn’t expect the preserve to look so different at night so that makes it even harder to navigate in the direction his big brother might be.
When he hears the crunch and rustle of multiple footsteps to the left he gets excited and starts running in the direction of the sound. He is quick to find out though that the footsteps were not of human origin as he’s almost trampled by a herd of deer. He gets up to dust himself off, somehow unharmed but shaken up to say the least, and has to search out the flashlight he dropped because of the deer. Once he’s located the source of he can’t help the scream he lets out as he trips, landing once more on the forest floor in his haste to get away from the now illuminated figure on a woman’s naked and clawed up torso.
Before he can run and try to get help a pair of red eyes show through the darkness behind the woman’s body. At first he worries that it’s a bear that had sought out the scent of a fresh kill and stumbled upon him instead. But as the creature steps over the body and into the light of the fallen flashlight he lets out another scream, this time for his brother, as a rabid human and wolf-like figure nears him. Seconds later he’s on his feet and running as fast as he can away from whatever that thing is.
Sadly he isn’t fast enough.
The creature gains on him in a matter of minutes, tackling him to the ground and keeping him there with claws that embed themselves in his right shoulder and leg, making him cry out once more. He can do nothing more than cry and try for not as the beast sniffs at his side and works his shirt up with its muzzle. Not even a second later teeth are implanted into the supple flesh of his bared side and he screams louder than he ever has before.
Almost as quick as the teeth appeared they’re gone and the creature along with them. As Stiles crawls away from the spot of his attack he hears the sound of barking dogs and thinks that must have scared the thing away.
He barely registers the panicked shout of his name before everything goes dark.

So I said in the first chapter that updates will be sporadic and i just got a new job so now they'll be even more so. Yay!!!!!
Anyway, I hope the next chapter so soon makes up for what's going to be a very hectic update schedule.
Chapter Text
Stiles wakes with a small whine as the unusual scent of antiseptic, bleach, and other chemicals hit him all at once. When he opens his eyes he grows confused at the sight of white walls and pale room decorations. There’s a beeping that feels like it’s right against his ears. Looking around the plain and unfamiliar, the sight of his big brother leaning with his top half on his bed and bottom half in a clearly uncomfortable chair is what lets him finally figure out he’s in the hospital.
“Jordan,” he rasps, voice merely a whisper due to how dry his throat is.
As he calls the man’s name a few more times he tries desperately not to think about how much he wants to call his big brother dad. Especially now with how confused and somewhat scared he is. He had done it once, a couple of years ago by accident, and the look of utter and absolute heartbreak on Jordan’s face had been enough to keep him from ever doing it again. He tells others Jordan is his dad sometimes, though, only with people he knows will never meet his big brother, because he doesn’t remember their real father enough to consider him as such. He doesn’t remember if he was as truly loving and caring as Jordan says on the rare occasion the man is brought up. He only truly remembers Jordan being there, making sure he’s happy and healthy and loved.
Jordan starts waking about the sixth time Stiles rasps his name.
“Stop Stiles, It’s too early to get up.” Stiles smiles slightly at the response. It is what Jordan says word for word every time he wakes him, no matter if Jordan was supposed to be up by that time or not.
About a minute after speaking Jordan shot awake making Stiles nearly jump out of his skin.
“Oh my god you’re awake,” his brother breathed in relief and pulled him into a hug but just as quickly pulled back, anger written all over his face. “What the hell were you thinking? Do you know how much you scared me!? You could have died out there, Stiles. Hell, you almost did!”
Jordan’s words finally helped Stiles remember what had happened to get him here. Flashes of trees and the deer and the body and the creature all showed up at once as his breathing became shallower in response to the onslaught. God, he had been so stupid.
“Fuck,” Jordan said.
He was used to these; Stiles had bad anxiety, primarily social anxiety, and had panic attacks more often than either of them like. He drew his brother in until their foreheads were touching and grabbed the hand free of wires and brought it to his chest so Stiles could feel the rise of his chest as well as his heartbeat.
Jordan guided Stiles as he always did, talking calmly until the boy’s breathing was much more even. He pulled Stiles closer as he started to cry, trying to comfort his brother as much as he could.
“I’m sorry,” Stiles told him in a sob. “I-I just wanted to ma-make sure you were safe.”
“That’s not your job buddy,” he said, his heart breaking for his brother. “I know you don’t want to lose me, but putting yourself in danger in order to do that is not okay. You understand that right?” Stiles just nodded into his shirt.
“Can we just go home please?” Stiles asked with a sniffle.
“We’ll try to leave as soon as possible,” he promised.
A few hours later Stiles was rummaging through his bag of stuff as Jordan buckled him into the car (he was ordered not to make any movements to aggravate his bite wound and possibly rip his stitches). He whined when he couldn’t find the object he was looking for, pulling the attention of his brother.
“What’s wrong?”
“I lost the key,” Stiles told him apologetically.
This was the third apartment key that Stiles had lost in the last year, and while making copies wasn’t the most expensive thing, the hospital stay definitely strapped them for the already limited cash Jordan received on a weekly basis. Usually they would have him use the emergency one until Jordan could get another one, but this had been the emergency one.
“Damn, are you sure?” Stiles nodded.
“Maybe we can go back and get it,” Stiles suggested.
“I don’t know.” Jordan bit his lip in contemplation. “Would you be okay?”
“As long as the lady’s not still there.” He saw Jordan flinch a little at the mention of the body. He hadn’t been thrilled to find out that Stiles had found it.
“The bear you saw probably moved it,” he tried to assure. “Do you know where to go?”
“Yeah, it’s by that stream you keep trying to get me to walk through. I heard it at some point.”
“You mean the stream you refuse to walk through.”
“Most of the time it’s still water. That means gross stuff like bacteria and leeches.” Stiles pulled a face that made Jordan laugh. Jordan alway tells him he’s a nerd, because he knows stuff like that and actively follows it as well. Stiles usually tells him that it’s not his fault he’s too stupid to listen to basic facts.
“Well I can take us most of the way if that’s where it is, but you’ll have to take us from the river.” Stiles nodded in confirmation before Jordan left to move to the driver’s seat of the cruiser.
BREAK
“Stiles just cross the river,” Jordan said in frustrated exasperation.
“Still. Water,” Stiles told him with the greatest glare a ten-year-old could muster. “You’re gathering diseases as we speak.”
“I have got to stop letting you watch the discovery channel,” he sighed before moving over to grab his little brother and carrying him across the water on his hip. “There you go little man.”
“I’m not little,” Stiles exclaimed as he was set down on the other side of the stream.
“Sure you aren’t buddy,” Jordan said as he climbed out of the river himself. “Now where too.”
Stiles did the strangest thing when he asked that. He stuck his nose in the air and sniffed. Just like a dog would. After he sniffed a concerning amount of times -which, really, just doing it once was concerning- Stiles pointed somewhat right.
“Uh… Okay then.”
Stiles leads him for about ten minutes, occasionally sniffing the air and changing course somewhat. When he stops he points down at a spot on the ground and says, “This is where she was,” all classic horror movie possessed child like.
“Y-You sure about that,” he hesitates to say, suddenly feeling a small need to call a priest or something.
“Yeah, I can smell it,” he tells him, like that’s a normal thing to be able to do. “I don’t think a bear took her though.”
“And why is that?”
“The flashlight is gone too. I don’t think bears need flashlights.”
“No. No they do not,” he confirms. More than likely though, if the flashlight is gone, so is the key.
As he searches the ground with his eyes in hopes maybe whoever moved the body missed the key he hears the snapping of twigs on the ground. He responds quickly, facing the direction of the person coming their way and ushering his little brother behind him and keeping him close. He can’t stop Stiles from peeking out from behind his legs, though.
“What are you doing here?” The strange person that had been walking toward them -an admittedly attractive but intimidating man- asks him barely even glancing at Stiles which is relieving in a sense.
As he goes to answer, a tug on his shirt stops him.
“He smells like her,” Stiles whispers. That and the sharp intake of breath has his attention focused directly at the man in front of him.
His concern and speculation quickly turn to fear when the man’s previously jade eyes become a steely blue, his gaze directed at Stiles’ small form. A sharp pin prick in his thigh makes him hiss and rush to make sure his little brother is okay only to find that his eyes have taken on a golden glow.
“But he’s just a kid,” he hears the man whisper in saddened wonder.
“What the hell?” He doesn’t look away from his brother’s eyes even when they stop glowing.
“He’s a werewolf,” is the shocking and life changing statement the man chooses to deliver him as their eyes finally meet.

Chapter Text
Derek paced the dusty floor of his once pristine home, arms crossed over his chest. Sitting on a cot against the one fully intact wall in what used to be the living room was the deputy he had ran into earlier, his little brother snuggled into his side and dozing. He couldn’t help the glances he kept sending the little boy.
A bitten child.
A living bitten child.
There was a reason that people didn’t give the bite to children. Most kids under the age of twelve didn’t survive the bite. No one knew why exactly but after puberty hit in humans chances of surviving the bite skyrocketed. Most people who are bitten, by choice at least, receive the gift between 18 and 30 because not only is that the most viable time but because they can more truly consent.
Whoever had killed Laura was clearly not in their right mind if not only had they forced the bite on someone, but a child. At least he hoped they were, he could barely wrap his head around the idea of a non-feral alpha doing such a thing. Didn’t really want to if he was being honest with himself.
“What’s going to happen to him?” The small and downtrodden voice broke Derek from his musings.
“I honestly don’t know, the fact that he survived is a miracle alone.” He flinched at the indelicacy of his words when the deputy pulled his little brother closer to him and a tear rolled down his cheek.
“Look… I- The best we can do for now is watch him and make sure he’s safe. The full moon is in a few days and I can’t imagine the toll it’s going to take on him.”
“What do I have to do?” There was a determination that hadn’t been there before, the man’s urge to protect his little brother overcoming his fear.
He missed Laura so much.
“For the next few days, possibly longer, you’ll have to keep him out of school. With his senses developing and the full moon so close it’ll be too overwhelming for him.” Deputy Stilinski nodded along as he spoke, petting his brother’s hair. “On Friday night you’ll need to bring him here, or we’ll have to find somewhere else that’s secure, and lock him up.
“What!” Derek flinched and the younger Stilinski stirred and murmured in his sleep. Only the latter made the officer lower his voice. “I’m not going to lock up my brother.”
“Look Deputy-”
“Just call me Jordan, the title thing is annoying when I’m not on the job.”
“Okay, Jordan. I know it sounds bad.” Jordan scoffed. “But it’s also the only way to keep him safe from others and other’s from him.”
“What do you mean?”
“Wolves, whether born or bitten, have a hard time with control especially around the full moon. If he’s not locked up he could escape and hurt someone and that could attract the wrong kind of attention.”
“What kind of attention?” the man said with a slight gulp.
“The kind that won’t hesitate to hurt a child. The kind that will only see a wild animal they need to put down.
“The kind that would burn an innocent family alive just because they’re not human.”
“Jesus,” the man breathed. “I should probably look into that.”
“It doesn’t matter at the moment, what matters is him.”
“Yeah, you’re right. But… I just- Do we have to lock him up, he’s just a little boy,” the deputy points out, probably desperate at this point.
“The only other way that I know of that would be better, we don’t have access to.”
“Then can you do anything in the meantime, maybe help him find a way to not struggle as much as he could?”
“Maybe,” he answers, “but I don’t know how well it would work, or how good of a teacher I would be.”
“Well you better start your lesson plan cause you’re the only one we have,” Jordan tells him.
Before Derek can attempt to make a comeback or any other sort of a response they’re interrupted by a sleepy voice.
“What’s going on?” Stiles asks his brother as he sits up, rubbing at his eyes. “Where are we?”
“We’re in a house in the preserve, that old scary one you always say is filled with tetanus and termites.” Derek doesn’t know whether or not he should be offended by the comment on his family home or not. Probably not given its state of disrepair.
“Oh, am I still a werewolf?”
“Yeah, buddy,” the little boy’s brother tells him solemnly.
“Awesome.”
Derek doesn’t think he’s ever seen a smile so big on a ten year old’s face.

So it's been a hot minute. Not gonna lie half of this was written while minorly sleep deprived so it's probably not the greatest. Even so I'm just happy I managed to finish it.

Chapter Text
Derek looks around at the set up in the basement. It’s rather simple: a pair of smaller shackles connected to chains that are attached to a hook in the ground. It might not have been enough for a full grown werewolf but hopefully it’ll be enough to hold a more bite-sized one. He wanted this to be as humane as possible for Stiles -as humane as chaining up a child can be, anyway- and even set up a little nest of blankets and pillows to make sure the pup was comfortable.
Above him he could hear the rumble of a car engine before the vehicle came to a stop. He brushes himself off and heads upstairs to greet the two brothers.
Jordan had followed his advice in the last week, he kept Stiles out of school under the guise that he was healing from his injury and even took a very brief sabbatical to supervise him. Nearly all their free time had been spent at the Hale house with Derek doing his best to try and train Stiles. The training actually took place outside though as Stiles insisted he didn’t want to catch anything from doing so inside (despite Derek telling him it was impossible for him to catch anything sickness related as a werewolf).
Stiles was actually a pretty fast learner, it seemed, and was able to catch on with whatever he was being taught within a couple of tries. Derek could guess that was a benefit of being turned young; you had more time to integrate with your wolf and do so more seamlessly than you would if you were an adult.
It gave him a small amount of hope that Stiles would be able to make it through the night with little to no issue. Though the boy also got distracted by chasing a rabbit the other day, so it wouldn’t surprise him if that wasn’t the case.
“Do I have to,” he heard Stiles whine in the car as they pulled up.
“Yes you have to be inside the house.”
“But-”
“No buts,” Jordan cut him off. “It was hard enough getting you here without you tearing up the seats. Besides, you can’t catch anything. The most you’ll get is a scratch that will disappear in about a second.”
He could hear the little boy huff in irritation and it nearly made him laugh. He did laugh when they finally entered the building. A ten year old with fangs, side burns, and glowing eyes was quite comical after all. He did feel bad though when Stiles whined and hid his face into Jordan’s legs.
Stiles was quite small for a ten year old- he had noticed. Not extremely so but, his head barely reached his brother’s hip. He asked about it, but Jordan assured him everything was fine -that his body was just having a bit of difficulty catching up to his brain. Whatever that meant.
“Sorry Stiles,” he was quick to apologize, when Jordan glared at him anyway. “Would it make you feel better if I was in my beta shift?” Stiles peaked out at him and slowly nodded.
Within a few seconds of the confirmation his beta shift was out in full glory, his fangs poking at his lips and his eyes making the room seem much brighter. He rolled his eyes when Stiles giggled at his shift.
“You don’t have eyebrows,” the little boy said in amusement.
“No I don’t, Stiles,” he confirmed with a roll of his eyes. “Now why don’t you come over here and we can get started.” He made sure to make his voice soothing so as not to freak the boy out about their current circumstances.
“I don’t wanna,” he said, tightening his grip on his brother’s legs as his eyes flicked between Derek and the chains.
“Hey,” Jordan started, somehow managing to escape his little brother’s iron grip and bending down so they were eye level, “it’s going to be okay. I’m not going to be more than a couple of feet away the entire night and Derek will be right there next to you. Okay?”
“Okay.”
“Come on Stiles,” Derek said lightly, holding out a hand. Hesitantly Stiles walked over and grabbed his hand so Derek led him over the cuffs he set up. He’s glad he had the foresight to line the metal restrains with some foam so they wouldn’t hurt him.
“Now, like Jordan said, I’m going to be right here the entire time so if you need anything just tell me.” Stiles nodded along. “And I know this looks scary but I promise this won’t hurt. Feel the inside.”
“Soft,” the little boy muttered as he reached a tentative hand out to run his fingers along the lining.
“Exactly,” Derek said. “So the metal doesn’t chafe or hurt you.”
“Why don’t you have to be chained up?” Stiles said with a skeptical glance to the rest of the set up.
“I’ve been dealing with the full moon since before I was your age,” he told the pup as he locked one of the cuffs around his tiny wrists. “I’m used to it which means I can control myself more.”
“Will I ever be able to control myself?” the little boy asked. “Or is it different because I was bitten.”
“For bitten wolves it can be a bit more difficult,” he admitted. “They weren’t born werewolves so they aren’t used to all the urges and instincts. But eventually everyone can learn control. To resist the call of the moon.”
“Am I going to turn into an actual wolf,” Stiles asked as they settled down into the blanket nest, Derek making sure the cuffs were on right and that the young boy was comfortable.
“I’m not sure,” he admitted after considering the question for a moment. “It’s not a skill many have. As werewolves have grown, evolved and adapted to fit our circumstances and blend in with humans more, the ability has become rather rare. My mother could, my sister too, but I haven’t heard of many others that can.
“It’s possible given your age that you may bond more with your more animal side and achieve the full shift, I suppose,” he shrugged. “It’s not often someone your age gets bitten-”
“You mean it’s not often someone my age survives being bitten.” Derek flinched at the bluntness of the statement.
“It is because of the risk that those as young as you don’t often receive the bite. It’s usually only in last ditch attempts or, like with you, the alpha isn’t in their right mind. Because of this not a whole lot is known about transitions and other such things for bittens as young as you.”
“Jordan,” Stiles called loudly, almost as if not believing his brother was still there.
“Yeah bud,” the other man was quick to respond.
“Can you take notes?”
“You’re not a case study, Stiles,” the deputy huffed.
“Please,” the little one whined. “I can’t do it myself, you have free hands and you’re an eyewitness. I wanna know what will happen.”
“Stiles-”
“Please, big brother? I wanna know what’s going to happen to me.” Derek watched as any fight left in the man drained out of him with a sigh.
“Fine, I’ll go get the notebook.”
“Thank you,” the boy shouted after his brother as the man made his way upstairs.
“Why do you want him to take notes so badly?” The older beta couldn’t help but ask.
“A true scholar never misses a research opportunity,” the boy said with a matter-of-fact tone, making Derek raise a brow in question. “What we know about me could help someone else in the future. How are we supposed to learn if someone doesn’t take the necessary steps to inform people what may or may not work, what can help them and what can harm them?”
“That’s… A smart way to think about things,” was all he could really say.
“Jordan says I’m too smart for my own good sometimes,” Stiles shrugged.
“Probably just wants to protect you,” Derek reasoned. “It’s a bit hard to do that when you keep figuring out ways around being protected.”
“I guess so,” the pup conceded.
Not long after they were done talking Jordan came back downstairs, a large spiral notebook and pen in hand. They settled after that, waiting for the moon to hit its peak or for Stiles to react in some way; whichever came first. Eventually though, Stiles fell asleep curled ever so slightly into Derek’s side and made the man too afraid to move.
“What happens after tonight?” Jordan said not long after Stiles passed out, drawing Derek’s attention. “After the full moon wears off, I mean? Am I going to have to call the high school again.”
“High school?” he responded in confusion. Wasn’t Stiles only ten?
“I told you his body is having trouble catching up to his brain,” the deputy lamented. “I figured when he was younger he would skip a grade or two, he was too smart not too. One of his teachers, about a year or two ago, told me that I should get Stiles taken for an aptitude test, to see exactly where he should be to best suit his needs. They said an environment where everyone else is on a lower level mentally can be just as harmful as one where he is behind everyone else.
“I figured they’d maybe say he should be in sixth grade at most. Instead they told me he scored above most highschoolers. He’s in his sophomore year right now.”
“Well shit,” Derek swore.
“Yeah,” Jordan huffed. “He probably could have gotten his G.E.D no problem but he wanted to go to school. Insisted that socialization was just as important for a growing brain.”
“I can’t imagine that’s been too easy.”
“Kids will be jerks no matter what,” the deputy shrugged. “But from what he tells me he’s at least got a couple people in his corner. Pretty sure he has a crush on one of them with how much he talks about the kid.”
“Genius ten year old with a crush on an older girl, must be fun.”
“It’s a guy actually, though Lydia’s probably right after Danny in hero worship.”
“That’s gonna be a fun conversation in the future,” Derek couldn’t help but chuckle.
“One that I’m going to avoid as long as possible,” Jordan responded. “He’s already growing up too fast, don’t need to add two different sex talks on top of it.”
Derek was about to say something in response when Stiles shifted next to with a whimper.
“I’d get ready to take those notes,” the werewolf warned.
Derek held the smaller boy a bit closer as he roused more from his slumber. The sounds that came from the little one sounded almost as if he was in pain but when he tried to soothe the pup he found no pain to take. He did his best to offer comfort but nothing seemed to stop the writhing.
A few minutes into the concerning cycle Stiles seemed to curl into himself before the whimpers and whine slowly grew louder. That’s when Derek noticed the way Stiles’ bones and muscles seemed to be shifting under his skin. He could only watch in both wonder and horror as the boy grew smaller. Fur sprouted all over his body as it shifted into a different shape, a tail poking out from the shirt that was slowly engulfing the little one’s slowly shrinking form.
“Is this supposed to be happening,” Jordan called out from the side, worry clear in his voice.
“I-I don’t know,” Derek stuttered. He knew he said it was possible that Stiles would perform a full shift tonight but he didn’t think it would actually happen.
Eventually the pain filled noises and the shirt Stiles had disappeared under started moving. When a distressed yip came from the bundle Derek was quick to try and wrangle the pup out from inside the shirt. When the little one finally managed to get free he stumbled out of the nest of blankets and pillows only to land on his belly on the cold concrete.
Derek could only stare slack jawed at the clump of chocolate colored fur and golden eyes as Stiles tried and failed to learn how to walk on four legs. He was the smallest little wolf pup the man had ever seen and he could tell based on Jordan’s silence he was probably just as shocked at his little brother’s transformation.
Eventually he looked over to the wide eyed deputy who met his gaze in kind.
“What the fuck,” was all the other man said.
Derek couldn’t help but agree to the sentiment. It seemed Stiles was a prodigy in more ways the one and the older werewolf just knew he would have his hands full trying to keep the boy safe in all the madness that was sure to come.
Notes:
Not sure how to feel about this to be honest but again I'm just glad the chapter is finally done.
I hope everyone enjoyed.
