Summary:

Here is where I'm going to brain dump all the small ideas I have for some of the male cast of dbd, which does indeed include both sides. Anyway I hope you enjoy it regardless!

Renato is interested in the newest victim to the fog, nothing like a life or death experience to make you fall in love.

Chapter Text

It's happening again, Renato is staring, studying, and enamored. In his mind he's trying to pass it off as interest more than feelings of affection, since having interest is more digestible to him. It's once your eyes meet when he's broken from his trance as he quickly turns away and pretends he's doing something other than staring at you, your features, and your mannerisms. A deep sigh exits his lungs as he's done a complete 180 in under a second, now he can't even look in your general direction. However he can somewhat hear the conversation you're having with the other survivors, they're asking him questions about where he's from to what was his last memory before the black fog consumed him.

It's not long before his vision is clouded by a familiar black darkness. When he comes to his senses, he looks to see you, and two others. Your eyes meet once again but he feels a pang of shame when he notices the fear in your eyes. It doesn't take long before he begins to fidget with himself, his hands immediately reach to his thighs as he taps rhythmically, then he reaches to his neck and scratches before he messes with his bracelets. Everyone's vision is clouded again before they find themselves on MacMillian. Renato's eyes dart around trying to find something or someone, and like fate would have it he sees you. You nearly jumped out of your skin when he approached you so suddenly.

"Holy shi-...oh it's just you." You muttered while covering your mouth with your palm. Renato's lips part but he can't find the right words, so instead he tugs on your arm toward a generator. You kneel down together and begin to repair the generator, and just like before Renato's eyes slowly lead back to you. He finally musters up some courage to say something. "How much have they explained to you?" You pause-trying to rack your brain for an answer but just shrug as a response. "Not much, just that we have to fix these to power some gates to escape the killer...or some spider thing?...I'm not really sure."

Renato smiles, "That's okay and it's both that we're escaping from." Shortly after you both complete the generator and begin to walk to another one when you feel your heart pound against your chest faintly. Renato pulls you close by him under some crates and places his index finger against his lips. "That pounding you feel, it's an indicator as to how close the killer is." He whispers in a shushed tone. Eventually your heart calms down and you both come out of hiding to continue forward. This guy seems so different from the one you saw at the campfire, this one isn't as anxious as he seemed before, it's almost like he's in a zone or something. Whatever it is, he's focused and ready to tackle any objective. Suddenly Renato stops and turns his head to a direction off in the distance, he takes a look back to you and sighs through his nostrils. "Someone's in trouble, I'm going to help them and once I do I'll be right back."

Your brows knit together into a look of confusion. "How can you tell?" Renato's eyes dart above as he searches for a quick answer. "I just can, but don't worry you'll be fine. Now I've gotta go...sorry I'll be back as soon as possible." He says before running off. You watch as he exits so far that the fog covers him and you try and collect yourself. Flashing lights above meant that there was a generator close by, so you follow the light and get to work. Within seconds you hear a curt scream which makes your breath hitch, however you continue to work. It's surprisingly quiet after that, normally you could appreciate the silence but here it was uncanny. Right before completing the generator you hear footsteps coming your way along with grunts and moans of pain. It's the guy from earlier...

He doesn't acknowledge your concerned gaze as he hops on the gen with you. Once the gen pops you run to his side. "Are you okay, what happened!?" You question while looking at the huge slash in his arm. He hands you a roll of gauze and some butterfly tape. "It's hard to explain right now, just use these to patch the wound and I'll explain once we've escaped." He grunts. You're quick to follow his instructions as you tape the wound and wrap the gauze around. And again, just like before he's staring at you, and this time you're close enough to notice and acknowledge it.

"Your eyes..." Renato mumbles. You perk up and meet his longing gaze. "Um...yeah?" The corners of his mouth curve up slightly into a smile as he continues. "You have really pretty eyes." You fail to meet his eyes and so does he, there's a long pause between the two of you before he breaks it. "I'm sorry, I know we just met and that probably wasn't okay to say since we hardly know each other and-" You quickly shush him and shake your head. "It's fine, in fact it was pretty cute. I'm not used to compliments, especially from guys whose names I don't know." You chuckle.

Renato feels his face heat up as his cheeks flush. "It's..Renato. What's yours?" "It's, (Y/n)." The moment together is cut short as there's a pounding in your chest again, you look to Renato and he motions for you to follow him. "Follow me." You both run to where there's cover and peer behind a rock as Renato speaks up again. "Normally they can see where we went from the marks we leave behind but I was able to cover them since you stayed close to me." You just tilt your head at him but ignore the questions swimming in your mind for later. The pounding stops but is replaced by an ear piercing air horn, Renato turns to you with a grin. "That's our cue! Follow me."

The sound of your shoes can be heard hitting against the ground as you both sprint into the night without much care. Eventually you both reach a large gate where it appears someone already opened. Before you reach the end Renato raises his hand to you for a high five, your hands meet and you laugh together before exiting your first trial.

When you arrive back at the campfire you see Renato by himself, he's picking pebbles from the ground and tossing them before he notices you. You sit next to him and watch as he tenses up, he begins to mess with his hair by either twirling it or brushing his fingers through. "I wanted to thank you for earlier, without you I probably would've just sat in a corner scared shitless." You say as he turns to you. He just laughs awkwardly and nods. "I'm not used to this honestly." Renato begins. "You're something new to me, and you make me feel things I didn't think I could even begin to understand..." His hands are shaking and in an attempt to keep them busy he starts to interlock his hands and stretch them out. "Do you...get what I'm trying to say?" He asks while nervously smiling.

You take one of his hands in yours and nod. "Yeah...yeah I do. How about we take this slow and get to know each other some more though." He swiftly nods his head with a giggle. "We should play twenty questions or something like that?" You propose as he agrees.

"Have you ever had a boyfriend?" He asks. You snicker at the question. "Oh come on!"

The rest of the endless night was filled with laughter and chatter, aside from the murder game you have to participate in from here on out, it almost felt normal.

Notes:

I really wanted to write something cute and quick for my boy Renato, he's just so cute. Anyway, if you enjoyed tysm and if you have any recommendations for characters or prompts feel free to comment!

Chapter 2: Dwight Fairfield/Male Reader:Proving Thyself

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Your foot tapped against the damp ground as you sat atop a log by the campfire where several others sat or stood. There you found yourself next to Dwight, outside of trials he was kinda unnoticed. He looks to you with a smile and waves, you return the gesture which seems to open up into a conversation. "Do you remember what life was like outside of here?" He asks while looking above the never ending midnight sky. You nod, "Yeah kinda. But I try not to dwell...It'll depress the fuck out of me." a sigh leaves your parted lips. "I didn't mean to uh...depress you..." He mutters. You shake your head quickly, "No no. It's okay, I'm not depressed at the moment." you glance at him before looking back to the sky.

A huff can be heard from him. "I guess I wanted to know what you're like when you're not trying to escape." You tilt your head and meet his eyes. "You first." You say with a curved grin. He stifles a chuckle while shaking his head. "Well, I was kinda wimpy throughout my life and not just in high-school...it followed me through community college and up until I got my first job and so on..." He started before looking at you again. "Then here I figured things could be different. I know what people think of me as soon as they see me because they all have the same disappointed look on their faces." His shoulders slump as an exhausted sigh leaves his body. "Dwight." You say loud enough so you can get his attention. He quickly snaps to you with slightly wide eyes. 'Um...yes?" He quickly adjusts his glasses before resting his hands on his lap.

"Things are different here. Everyone here looks to you for answers, whether you see it or not. I've not even been here for that long and I can tell." His lips slowly curve into a smile as his face begins to heat up. "Thank you, it means a lot." He mumbles while messing with the hem of his shirt. "Don't mention it." You reply. After a moment of silence he breaks it with his previous question. "You didn't answer my question. I did, now it's your turn." He mentions while nudging you. You groan before turning to him. "Ugh fine...although don't be disappointed when it's not what you expect." He inches closer to your side as you begin speaking. "Honestly I was kinda the same as you growing up, kids used to pick on me because I was different. It got worse in high-school when they could call it what it was. I mean...you know how people are they see your weakness and plow through it." Again there's a moment of silence.

"Did it get any better?" Dwight asks, breaking the silence. "Yeah, once I found my people and a nice support group...I wonder if they think about me and where I am..." You question in a whisper. Dwight places a hand on your shoulder, squeezing softly. "I'm sure they are. I doubt they'd just forget about you." Before you can respond a dark fog clouds your vision and you find yourself with Dwight, Jake and Meg.

Together, you all share a look of determination and solidarity. Dwight can't seem to take his eyes away from your frame, the way you stand, bat your eyes, even the way you look at him. When you finally enter the trial you find yourself with Dwight. He's quick to reach for your hand, you look up at him and quirk your head. "Um...?" You mumble. He meets your confused eyes and slowly pulls away. "Sorry, I wanted to comfort you...Back at the campfire..." His voice dims out and he averts his eyes.

Then a faint beat in your chest begins to sound through your ears. Dwight pulls you to cover and you both sneak away to a generator. While working Dwight occasionally chants words of affirmation which motivate you. "Great job! At this pace we'll be outta here in no time..." When the generator is complete Dwight stops and looks towards where the killer was last seen. "Jake...he's being chased right now. Let's make the most of this and move."

Before you can question how he knows what's going on you both find Meg holding arm while groaning in pain. After healing her she quickly sprints towards where Jake and the killer were. "She's bold...I'll give her that." You mutter before getting back to work. The generator isn't able to be completed as your heart begins to pound in your ears. You didn't have enough time to react before feeling a sharp slash into your back. Adrenaline is the only thing you can act on from here as you begin to run as far as you can in a frenzy. When you look behind you, you're met with a grinning bone mask which belonged to the Trapper. His heavy huffs and puffs began to sound closer and closer as you attempted to bridge the gap.

It was pointless as you stepped into the maw of one of his many bear traps. You scream out in pain as the jaws of the trap clamp around your leg, the jagged and rusted teeth sinking themselves further into your flesh. The pain you felt was bad but nothing could compare to what came next, as you were dragged and lifted to a meat hook. The hook pierced through skin and flesh coming through the other end almost effortlessly. The Trapper left almost immediately which left you there alone and hanging. Tears along with blood fall from you, your body limp and helpless. Before you feel the urge to attempt to free yourself you hear Dwight call out to you.

"I've got you!" He calls out from beneath you as he begins to unhook you. He grabs some gauze from his front pocket and begins treating the gash on your back. "You okay?" He questions while looking into your eyes. You sniffle and quickly wipe your tear away. "I don't know...I'm all sorts of fucked up right now." You muttered. Dwight hums in response and lifts up your pant leg to reveal your mangled ankle. A gasp escapes his thin lips, it doesn't go unnoticed by you. He's swift to apologize, but you wave him off.

"It's okay you don't have to say sorry." His brows knit together and he sucked in one of his cheeks. He almost looked like a kicked puppy, you didn't mean to come off strong but didn't say anything else as he continued to stitch up your ankle. The silence between you both is suffocating, and you ponder on what to say. Anything, anything to somehow make this grim situation not seem so bleak.

..."You remind me of one of my old friends...he was dorky and kinda cute." You chuckled. He perks up at you, cheeks slightly flushed and he blinks as he processes what you just said. "Uhm..." He takes a quick intake through his nostrils. "Thanks?" A low titter slipping past his lips. Once he's done he lends you his hand and lifts you up. "We should get moving...you're doing much better now. Right?" You nod your head and scratch the back of your neck. "Uh yeah.."

After suggesting you both go separate ways, you see Jake working by himself. "Need a hand?" He looks up and simply nods before going back to working. This quiet you have now is welcome since Jake is just a cool person by nature so nothing is really awkward with him. He opens his mouth to say something but stops himself, you turn to him and you raise your head. "Kinda random...but are you and Dwight...?" Before he can finish his sentence you shake your head. "No no...why?" He averts his eyes and shrugs. "No reason, I'll let you both sort that out. As confused as you were before, this was more severe.

Jake's words wander your mind as you try to understand what he meant. He thought that we were in a relationship, but why? Nothing either of you did could implicate a relationship. Could it? Maybe calling him cute didn't help at all but there's no way Dwight had a thing for you. Yes he approached a lot, but that could be chalked up to him wanting to help you get accustomed to this hell. And it would be odd to mistake his kindness for affection. But then again, is there any chance those two can blur between each other?

A frustrated sigh slips past your lips as you finish the generator. Jake quickly excuses himself which leaves you alone with these conflicting thoughts. Before your mind wandered some more, you heard a familiar scream from far away. "Dwight!?" You called out before sprinting into the direction of where the scream emitted from. Dwight's cries and whimpers can be heard close by as you're closer. Sure enough it's Dwight hanging with a hook pierced through his chest. You grab him off and begin to rip a piece of your clothing as another means to wrap up his wounds. "You didn't abandon me?" He grunts out while leaning against his knee. "Why would I? You saved my ass back there." You reply while holding onto him tightly. He cracks a smile and wipes his face clear of mucus, blood, sweat and tears.

You lift him up and he points off in the distance. "Jake is on the last generator. Meg is being chased but I'm sure she'll keep him preoccupied. Which leaves just us two to get to a gate and open them while Meg stays in chase." He states before pushing his glasses up. Your eyes search for an exit but you're overwhelmed and begin to spiral before Dwight places his hands on your shoulders. "Hey, look at me. It's okay, you're okay. I'll take you to a gate and we will escape, trust me." You slowly nod and Dwight leads you through the forest to an exit just in time for them to be powered on.

"I'll leave this to you while I try to get the others out. You can do it!" He shouts before running in the opposite direction. A smile crept its way onto your face as you pulled down on the lever. After nearly opening the gate you hear a set of scattered footsteps. When you look up you see Jake and Meg but no Dwight. "Where's Dwight?" You question as you approach them. "Last I saw him he was being chased. He distracted the Trapper for us." Meg states while using her thumb to point behind her. Jake nods in agreement and you push past them. "C'mon we have to go help him!" You pleaded.

Then a distinct beat in your chest pumps, you look up to see Dwight holding his abdomen and running ahead of the Trapper. You all jump into action and sprint behind your teammate. "If you want him you'll have to get through us!" Meg shouts. "Yeah!" Jake cheers. You get underneath Dwight as he leans against you for support as you both head towards the exit. After being slashed Meg sprints ahead of everyone and flips the lever revealing the exit. Jake is the second to be hit as he reaches the exit. You're the last one to take a gash in the back for Dwight which leaves him vulnerable once again.

Before he reaches the gate he's knocked down. As the Trapper wipes his blade clean, with your remaining strength you drag Dwight out of the trial leaving the Trapper more agitated than ever.

When you all return to the campfire everyone seems to be in high spirits. Other survivors congratulate you on your altruism and boldness to pull off something so risky. After a couple minutes of socializing you find a spot for yourself away from the logs by the campfire. You lean against the trunk of a tree and let out a sigh of relief as someone clears their throat. You look up to see Dwight. "Mind if I sit next to you?" He asks while itching at his cheek. You pat the side beside you and stretch as he sits beside you.

"Before, you had said that I reminded you of someone in your life before you came here. I can't say the same for you." He says while gazing at the stars above. A nearly silent 'Oh' leaves your mouth before he continues. He turns to you with a smile. "You're not like anybody I've met. You're incredible and kind. I wish that I had someone like you in my life..." You both are now inches apart, instead of gazing into the night sky you're now gazing into each other's eyes. Is this what Jake had meant before? Dwight really did have feelings for me and I was just too dense to notice?

"Can I..kiss you?" He whispers into your ear. You pull him in closer and connect your lips together as you both smile into the kiss.

Notes:

Honestly I had no idea how to start this but once I started I couldn't stop. This was a request that I wanted to fulfill so I hope you enjoyed it and that this was to your liking! Also I did not spell check or anything this was just a complete brain dump so apologies if this is an incoherent mess.
