Summary:

Kai has a gay panic over his newfound friends. Nearly dies.

Chapter 1: 1

"KAI!!!!"

Kai opened his eyes groggily. It was simply too early to be getting up for school. He sighed as he stared at the ceiling, wishing he didn't have to get up.

"Kai come on, we're gonna be late to school!" Nya screamed. Shit. He rolled out of bed and hastily put on a shirt and sweatpants. He made sure to grab a jacket as well. His hair wasn't that much of an importance right now. He ran over to the door where Nya was already standing wearing a black and white striped shirt and jeans. She also wore a leather jacket and her hair was slicked back in a neat ponytail. 

"Slowpoke." Nya chuckled. 

Kai huffed and put his shoes on, grabbing his backpack and checking he brought everything. "Fuck!" He half shouted, rushing to grab his phone. It was worn down and had an abundance of cracks along the edges. His phone sported a red phone case which was covered in stickers. When he ran back Nya was on her phone, waiting for the other to come back. 

"Are you ready now?" Nya sighed. Kai hesitated. He didn't want to go to school, yet if he didn't go all of their money was to go to waste. Ever since their parents left, they had to fend for themselves. When their parents left, they got put with their aunts and uncles who didn't care much for what they did. They constantly forgot they were living under the same roof as them. Fed up with all of the abuse, he ran away with Nya. So he nodded.

 

Once they got to school, they parted ways, as they were 2 years apart in age. Kai rushed to his classroom and burst through the door. The teacher looked over at him unamused. 

"You’re late. Go take a seat." He shuffled over to an empty seat and sat down. To the left of him sat a brunette, sporting an electric blue coat and a bright orange scarf. 

"Hi!" The blue clad man exclaimed "I'm Jay! What's your name?"

"Kai." 

Jay grinned. 

"It's nice to meet you Kai! would you like to sit with me and my friends during lunch?" 

Kai shrugged "Sure. Not like I have anything else to do." 

"Great!" Jay smiled. The bell rang. "Let’s meet at the front of the cafeteria, okay?"

Kai simply nodded and headed over to his second period. 

 

Kai was standing outside of the cafeteria. He didn't pack anything to eat and he doesn't have any money to buy lunch. So he stood there. Waiting. Soon Jay arrived at the cafeteria. 

"Hi Kai!" He exclaimed

Kai waved "Where are your friends?" 

Jay shrugged "I think Zane should be in the cafeteria already. I don't know where Cole and Lloyd are though." 

Jay started to walk inside the cafeteria and Kai followed. In the crowd of teens there was a tall boy with neat white hair, dressed in a blue long sleeve button up and a navy vest with blue accents. Jay waved back and rushed over to Zane. Kai walked over to them and sat down diagonally from them.

"Hi Zane!!" Jay beamed, bringing them into a hug.

Zane smiled, hugging Jay back "Hello Bluejay."

Jay ended the hug and sat down next to them. "So uh, Zane this is Kai and Kai this is Zane!”

Zane smiled over at Kai then started conversing with Jay. Kai’s face turned red. Why did they have to be so cute? Wait. What? Kai felt something creep up his throat and started coughing. He coughed into his arm. 2 fragments of petals fell out along with blood, which blended into his jacket. He discarded the petals as 2 teens walked up to them. It was a blonde boy sporting a green zip-up hoodie, alongside a taller scruffy black-haired boy, wearing a navy tank top reading "AC/DC".

"Hi guys!" The noirette greeted while the blonde haired boy put his phone away and did a small wave.

"Hi!" Jay beamed

"Hello." Zane calmly spoke.

"Who’s that?" Lloyd questioned, pointing at Kai.

"Oh that’s Kai! He’s my new friend!" Jay chirped

Lloyd nodded and sat next to Kai, pulling out his phone again. Cole sat next to Jay and joined their conversation. Kai went on his phone, despite having no one to talk to but his sister. And so he did.

watergirl: u dont have friends? lol loser 💀

fireboy: shut up you dont have friends either

watergirl: yeah and theyre watching me message you

fireboy: WHAT??

watergirl: yeah

fireboy: .

watergirl: ?

fireboy: 🖕

watergirl: lyt

fireboy: kys maybe

watergirl: okay ily bye

fireboy: lyt loser bye

Suddenly he felt something rising in his throat. He coughed into his elbow and pulled away. 3 petals fell out and blood stained his jacket. Kai discarded the petals onto the floor, hoping no one notices.

"Kai?"

Kai looked up from his sleeve and made eye contact with Jay, who had a worried look painted all over his face.

Kai just shook his head. "Probably just a little cold."

Lloyd nodded, yet still worried as the bell rung

 

As Kai was sitting in his last period he realised he was sitting behind Cole. Cole was sitting next to Zane, zoned out and scribbling all over his book. Zane was silently doing their work and listening to the teacher.

"Alright students," The teacher started, causing everyone to look up at them. "We’ll be doing a presentation in groups of 3. You are to present a slideshow about the history of a culture. I’ll post all the details online for you all to see"

Kai rolled his eyes and coughed a bit-. He saw Zane look over at Cole and gently tap his shoulder, bringing Cole back to reality. Kai simply lowered his head and looked at his workbook, covered in messy notes.

"Kai," Zane said in a gentle voice, facing Kai. "Would you like to join our group?"

Kai looked up and nodded, before scribbling nonsense in his book again. 

"Uhm so.. what are we gonna present?" Cole questioned.

"Seeing as we have to present the history of a culture, I think we should present the history of Ninjago." Zane suggested.

The others agreed, not having any other ideas. They got started reviewing notes and discussing study times. They had also exchanged phone numbers with Kai, Cole and Zane already having each other. Sooner or later the bell rung, and the boys packed up and left. Kai quickly left, explaining he had to go to work, nervously sighing as he practically ran over to Chen’s Noodle House. He arrived out of breath to a rather chipper Skylor cleaning dishes.

"What took you so long this time? And why are you outta breath? Found a boyfriend~? "

Kai huffed, slipping on his uniform over his shirt and placing on his apron. "No Skylor, I don’t have a boyfriend. How about you? You got a girlfriend yet?"

Skylor’s face quickly turned red "Uhm about that.."

Kai’s head whipped over to face Skylor, amused. "Really? Who’s the unlucky lady?"

Skylor rolled her eyes and grinned. "Oh I don’t know, does the name Nya ring a bell?"

Kai’s eyes widened. "Really? My sister?"

Skylor nodded as she walked over to the kitchen tightening her ponytail "Yes now come on, the customers aren’t gonna serve themselves"

Kai groaned and walked into the dining area of the restaurant, ready to serve customers.

 

After a rather busy night of serving customers, a couple soup spills, some Karens here and there, Kai was worn out and ready to nap right where he was standing. Before he could exit the break room however, he was stopped by Skylor handing him a couple takeout containers of noodles. Kai, too sleepy to actually notice what was happening, simply accepted it and waved as he left to head back to his apartment.

 

Kai entered the messy apartment shared by the 2 teens, took off his shoes and went to place the takeout in the fridge. He then placed his bag down and got ready for bed. Today was a long day and he was ready to just fall asleep. And so he did.

Chapter 2: 2

Kai woke up early the next morning oddly enough, tired as ever but still kind of awake. He got up and attempted to rub the sleep out of his eyes, getting ready for school and walking out of his and Nya’s shared room.

"Morning sleepyhead." Nya tiredly said, scrolling who knows what on her phone

Kai grunted in response as he went to heat up takeout from last night.

 

It was lunchtime and Kai was sitting with Jay and his friends. Again. I mean, it wasn’t like he had any other friends.

"Are those the same clothes you wore yesterday?" Lloyd asked, looking like he was about to scrunch up his nose.

"Yeah," Kai shrugged "I mean, not really much I can do"

"Don’t you have parents?"

Kai froze."...Yeah…? Totally..." Kai replied.

"Kai." Zane said firmly "Is everything fine at home?"

"I.. Y-yeah! everythings perfectly fine!" Kai lied.

An uncomfortable silence ensued. Jay fiddled with his fingers and Cole seemed like he was zoned out.

"You know, if you need any help, you can just ask us!" Jay uttered, looking down, fidgeting.

"No guys, I insist! It's fine!" Kai hastily reassured, knowing fully well he could benefit from the extra cash.

Suddenly his face dropped as he rushed to the bathroom. He felt something rise in his throat as a metallic taste entered his mouth. He was only just hunched over the toilet as he coughed up 3 types of flowers and petals covered in crimson blood. He felt his eyes water as he gagged. Once he had stopped he stood up and wiped his mouth, thick blood blending in with his red jacket. He stood there, feeling nauseous, about to puke again. He felt sick, why was this happening? Why did he seem to be the only person who pukes blood and flowers? Shouldn’t he be dead by now? Surely puking flowers was fatal. He was never one for botany so he didn’t know what those flowers were. He scrunched up his face and carefully reached in to grab a couple flowers. He then flushed the toilet and left the stall to wash his hands and the flowers.

As he walked up to the sink, Zane entered the bathroom, a worried look painted across their face.

"Kai?" Zane gently uttered

Kai glanced over at the silver haired boy, putting the hand with the flowers in his pocket casually.

"Are you okay, Kai?" They asked, as if Kai was porcelain, about to shatter.

Kai didn’t know how to respond to that. Was he okay? Between the burns on his skin from the failed blacksmithery and the thoughts of self hatred lingering in his head, he didn’t know. Besides, he’s only known the guy for what, 2 days? Nevertheless Kai always felt a sense of comfort near him. He felt like he could trust Zane. So he spilled. He told Zane about his parents leaving. He told Zane about him having to raise him and his sister as a child. He told Zane how he doesnt wanna live anymore. He went so far as to tell him how he’s puking up flowers .

Zane only stared in bewilderment. “Puking… flowers?”

“Yeah, I was about to wash off some of them to try and find out what they were..” Kai mumbled taking his hand out of his pocket, revealing the blood soaked flowers. Zane picked them up and walked over to the sink.

“Kai..” Zane started “I’ve heard of something like this before.”

Kai looked away.

“It's called hanahaki . It starts when someone gets a crush on someone.” Zane said nonchalantly, rinsing off the flowers. “Basically, you start growing flowers in your lungs, but not any flowers. You grow your crush's favourite flower. You end up coughing up these flowers and blood. Over time these flowers develop and first you’ll be coughing up a couple petals but soon you’ll cough up the whole flower. If you ignore this it’ll kill you . There are 2 ways to rid this, besides choking to death. Either you confess or get surgery. The surgery does remove all feelings and memories of your crush. And also if you confess, they need to like you back unless you die. Like, actually like.” Zane explains, inspecting a flower and twirling it between his fingers. “And if I know my botany correctly, this would be a moonflower, sunflower and a lily.” Zane added, pointing to the flowers.

Zane picks up the moonflower. “And if I am correct.”

“This means you like me.” Zane stated, looking at Kai, a smirk on their face.

Kai’s face instantly turned 5 shades darker.

“Uhm..I uh.. do like you..” Kai admitted.

Zane simply just wandered over to Kai and pressed a quick peck to his cheek before leaving the bathroom.

 

The rest of Kai’s day went by normally. Another boring period, a shift at Chen’s (which he spent half the time gossipping about his possible new boyfriend) and then sleeping.

Though today, he couldn’t fall asleep. One thing was stuck in his mind. Zane. That mysterious blonde boy who was so incredibly intelligent and oh so handsome. Kai lied in his bed thinking about what would happen. Why did they kiss him? Do they like him? Kai sighed and got out of his bed, opting to sit in the kitchen and message the boy.

fireboy: ???

ice ice baby: What do you mean?

fireboy: huh

ice ice baby: What happened earlier?

fireboy: do you not remember

fireboy: you kissed me

ice ice baby: I didn’t.

fireboy: ....

fireboy: what the everloving FUCK do you mean zane

fireboy: you like.. said i had whats it called

fireboy: like hamsuki

fireboy: anyway

fireboy: you said i had a crush on you and you kissed me

ice ice baby: Calm down Kai I was just joking!

ice ice baby: I do like you.

ice ice baby: And I would like to be your boyfriend. If you’re up to it of course.

fireboy: wait

fireboy: fr?

ice ice baby: Yes.

fireboy: omg yes

fireboy: i would love to be ur bf

fireboy: where do u live can i come over

ice ice baby: It is pretty late but I can pick you up. I’m not that busy at the moment.

fireboy: yes pls 🙏

fireboy: i live at xxxxxx

fireboy: apartment x

ice ice baby: Alright I’ll be over in a bit. Love you ❤️ .

fireboy: ❤️

 

Kai grinned and went to write a note to Nya, simply saying that he left early and that there’s takeout in the fridge. He then grabbed his school bag and a change of clothes and sat eagerly at the door, ready to be picked up by his new boyfriend. Soon he heard a knock at the door as he quickly got up to answer the door.

“Hi Zane!” Kai chirped

“Hello Kai.” Zane smiled, bringing the other into a hug. “You wanted to head to my house right? It’s pretty late, we should get going.”

Kai simply nodded, picking up his belongings and leaving the apartment, making sure he locked the door before grabbing Zane’s hand.

Zane got in the driver’s seat while Kai sat shotgun, placing his clothes on his lap and his bag on the floor.

“So about those other flowers..” Zane started

“Huh?”

“You coughed up 3 flowers Kai. Who are the lucky 2?” Zane smiled

“Uhm.” Kai buried his face in his hands in embarrassment. “It’s.. Cole.. and Jay..”

“You’ll be surprised to see who’s at my house.” Zane said flatly, unamused.

 

As Kai arrived at Zane’s sleek house, he  was in fact surprised, as he was met with Cole and Jay, playing Super Smash Bros in the living room.

“Hey Zane! Welcome back!” Cole called out, eyes still focused on the tv.

“Hello Cole.” Zane said, taking off his shoes and replacing them with white slippers. “I’ve brought Kai.”

“Ugh Jay- how do you keep winning?” Cole sighed, frustrated. He put down the controller and walked to Zane, Jay following after placing down his controller as well. Jay waved at Kai and Kai waved back.

“Hey Kai! Heard you're dating Zane now. Same.” Cole said, making duck lips. 

Zane giggled “He’s kidding.”

Kai’s face turned red as he nervously laughed, grabbing Zane’s arm and clinging to it, fiddling with their sleeve.

“Are you hungry Kai? I could make you something.” Zane asked. “Or I could get you a beverage.”

“Uh- just a hot chocolate is fine, please.” Kai uttered.

“Can I get a hot chocolate too?” Jay pleaded.

“Would you like one Cole?” Zane questioned

“Sure.” Cole smiled

Zane smiled back and walked off to make them hot chocolates. Kai, Cole and Jay followed suit, sitting at the island Zane had in his kitchen, as Cole and Jay talked about different games.

“Oh Kai! What games do you play?” Jay questioned

“I uhm.. never got the chance to play games.” Kai admitted

“What?” Jay replied in shock

“Yeah.. uhm.. I'd rather not talk about it. Not now anyway.” Kai answered, looking slightly dejected.

“We can play games when we’re done with the hot chocolate!” Cole suggested.

Kai nodded as Zane pushed a cup of hot chocolate to each of them, picking up a cup themself and cradling it between their hands. Kai took a small sip and looked up at Zane.

“Holy shit dude this is so good!” Kai half screamed, taking another sip

“Yeah Zane’s cooking is like that. They’re like an absolute god at cooking, you should try their pancakes!” Cole agreed

Zane chuckled. “I guess I'm making pancakes for breakfast then.”

 

“... Okay.” Kai was done with his hot chocolate and was learning how to play Animal Crossing. “This is kinda fun.”

“See! Video games are fun” Jay piped. Zane had multiple controllers so all 4 of them ended up playing with Kai, doing chores and helping each other pay off their houses. Pixal came walking into the lounge room and sat down next to Zane, holding a cup of warm milk.

“...Zane It's literally like, 2 am. Why are you and your friends still playing games.” Pixal sighed.

“Is it really that late? Wow.” Zane said, setting down his controller and setting it down next to them. “Actually, I don’t think I’ve introduced you to Kai yet.” They said, pointing to him.

“Oh. He’s Kai. Okay.” Pixal restated. “Y’know, you guys should go to sleep. You’ve still got school.” She added, finishing her milk and headed back to her room.

“Right.” Zane said, putting down his controller again, disconnecting it and putting it away. “Guys, It's pretty late, we should head to sleep.” Zane explained. Kai gave his controller to Jay, asking him to disconnect it and headed to Zane. Jay complied and disconnected Kai and his controller, while Cole disconnected his controller and turned off the Nintendo. Zane headed to his room and Kai followed, the other 2 heading to different rooms.

“Do they live here?” Kai asked the blonde, sitting down on their bed.

“No. They hang out here often though, so they have a room.” Zane declared, changing into more comfortable clothes. “It would be awkward constantly making them sleep on the couch or in the same bed as me. So they took up 2 guest rooms.” 

Kai nodded as Zane got into bed. Kai crawled in next to him, nestling comfortably in his arms, dozing off.

 

Today was a good day.

maybe i wiol continue this in the future if it comes back or i get the motivation to n yeah thats all!!
