    Athena isn’t stupid, she recognised how much of a driving factor Polites was for Odysseus.
    Odysseus would do anything to protect Polites from danger, to the point where he’d do things he never had before and he would find new skills he and Athena could practise, all for making sure Polites was safe. It was this sort of instinct buried inside of him; one Athena wasn’t bothered to try to get rid of.

    Though, that's not the only reason Athena keeps Polites around.

    OR :

    Odysseus convinces Athena to meet Polites, and Polites immediately clocks all of Athena’s problems.
