Chapter Text
Machines beeped loudly as Law stepped into the operating room. The patient was a 39 year old man, red hair, scarring over the left eye and an old shoulder injury, who had been shot in the right thigh. Wounds like this were not unheard of in the city and something Law had dealt with countless times, even before he started working at the hospital. The amount of gang violence in the area meant that the hospital frequently had patients coming in in the aftermath of violent altercations. The bullet had not gone all the way through and needed to be removed. Despite the severity, the injury was far from life threatening and, in Law’s eyes it was pretty low stakes. Shachi and Penguin were already in the room hooking up the patient to the anesthesia. They gave Law a brief nod as he entered. As he prepared, Law couldn’t help but feel a pair of eyes fixed on his back. Glancing over his shoulder he noticed the patient, Shanks if he remembered correctly, staring at him from across the room. Law sighed. He was accustomed to the judgmental stairs from patients before he operated. Many found his tattoos and overall demeanor to be off putting, spreading rumors about what group he was affiliated with or what unsavory business he got up to outside of work hours. Law couldn’t care less what these people thought of him but that didn’t mean he could easily ignore their stares or harsh words, some even going so far as to ask for a more “qualified doctor” to perform their operation, as if he wasn’t the most skilled surgeon in the city.
Finishing setting up his station he turned to the patient, the anesthesia had been administered and it would only take a couple of moments for him to go under so they could begin.
“My name is Trafalgar D. Water Law and I will be the one performing your operation today. It should be pretty simple as long as there are no complications, I’m sure Bepo already briefed you on the procedure”
Shanks nodded, his movements already turning sluggish
“The big guy with the white hair, he's reaallyy nice” He said, words slurred slightly
Law’s lip quirked up in a small smile
“That he is”
Law went to turn away as the patient reached for him. Law looked at him with a frown
“Is there something you need”?
“Hey, after this is allll done… Let me buy you dinner”? Shanks asked, smiling under the oxygen mask
Law’s eyes widened as he stared, he opened his mouth to respond once, then twice. He shook his head. Shanks was under heavy anesthesia and likely would not remember this interaction once he woke up from his surgery.
Law sighed
“Fine. If the surgery goes well and you heal up to where you could pick me up without assistance then you can take me on a date”
Shanks smile brightened
“After your shift then” he mumbled as his eyes fluttered shut
Law hummed in reply
Within seconds Shank‘s breathing evened out as he succumbed to the anesthetic
Law sighed in relief.
“Hey captain? What the fuck was that” Shachi asked. Bepo and Penguin stared at him with matching looks of disbelief.
Law shrugged
“It’s not like he’s gonna remember any of this later”
Law moved to grab a scalpel before anyone could ask more questions. They still had a job to do.
“Let’s begin” Law said, trying to ignore the faint blush that rested on his cheeks.
—
Two weeks passed and the red haired patient had completely left Law's mind, almost. His surgery had gone smoothly and Bepo had released him from the hospital a week later with strict instructions on what to and not to do to ensure a smooth recovery. Law continued week by week, one busy shift after another. He would be lying if he said the red-haired man's words hadn't been floating around his mind for the first couple of days. He was moderately attractive from the quick moments Law focused on his face, though he was a fair bit older than him, not that Law minded.
What he did mind was the incessant teasing from his friends. Shachi, Penguin, and Bepo would have been bad enough but news had quickly spread to everyone in the Heart Club as well as the Hospital.
Rumors swarmed through the establishment about their moody surgeon who was asked out by the one and only emperor of the east side. Right, because that was Red-haired Shanks, the well known mafia boss who’s crew had claimed the east side of the city as their own, fiercely protecting it from any who would dare to cause trouble.
This would be concerning enough if Law was just a regular civilian. but of course he wasn’t. Only really known by his own people and The Strawhats, he was the leader of the Heart Gang. A small group comprised of only 20 or so people who operated right under the Red Haired crew's nose.
Law was fortunate that the Emperor did not seem to remember his idiotic request.
In addition to the rumors and lingering glances, work at the hospital was busy. On Thursday a large car crash brought in multiple patients, all needing life saving treatment. After countless hours in the operating room Law finally was able to leave. It was nearing 8 at night when Law made his way to the locker room, after being threatened by his supervisor with forced vacation time if he didn’t leave the hospital. Shrugging off his white coat and replacing it with a worn deep blue jacket with a feathered collar that he preferred in the colder months. He put in his earrings and grabbed his bag, swinging it over his shoulder as he made his way to the lobby.
Law, Shachi, Penguin and Bepo all shared a nice apartment only a couple of blocks from the hospital, more often than not they chose to walk to and from work, leaving the car for whoever worked the latest shift. The autumn air was crisp but comfortable as it hit Law’s face, stinging his nose and ears just enough to make him wish he had his favorite spotted hat with him.
He tucked his hands into his pockets as he stepped out onto the street.
“Ah Doctor Trafalgar, I've been waiting for you”
A voice spoke behind him, deep and pleasant to the ears.
Law turned
Stepping outside of a car was a tall man. He wore a crisp white button down, partially unbuttoned and dark slacks. A matching suit jacket was draped over his shoulders. Red-hair was pulled into a messy ponytail at the base of his neck. He was very attractive, tall and muscular with some slight scruff on his jaw.
Law sucked in a sharp breath as he met red eyes, three scars visible over the left.
Shanks gazed at him, eyes sweeping up and down his body before landing once again on his face. He smiled.
“You didn’t forget about our date did you”?
Law starred, gapping at him like a fish out of water. He had been so sure the Emperor wouldn’t remember the conversation, which was most of the reason why Law agreed in the first place.
He felt heat rise up his face as he realized that Shank had, in fact, remembered. And not only that but he was serious. He wanted to take Law out.
On a date.
Law had never been on a date before. He had never had much interest and definitely not enough time to even consider finding a partner or even just someone to spend the night with.
Law snapped out of his musing as Shanks stepped towards him, reaching out a hand to gently take Law’s bag from him.
“I thought you wouldn’t remember that” Law said absently, allowing Shanks to place his stuff in the car.
Shanks laughed, the warm sound echoing in the cold air.
“How would you expect me to forget the handsome doctor who saved me from certain death”?
Law scoffed
“You weren’t going to die, far from it”
“Are you sure? Cause I was pretty sure I saw an angel come and save me” he said smiling, gently tracing Law's jaw with his finger tips.
Law pushed him away, his face a bright cherry red as he glared at the red-haired man. Shanks just laughed lightly. He stretched out a hand, offering it to Law.
“So, Shall we go”?
Law hesitated
He was being given a way out. Shanks wasn’t being hostile and had been nothing but kind and playful since he arrived. This was a choice, he could turn him down and leave, heading back to his boring apartment. Or he could take Shank’s hand, accept his offer and see where the night brought him.
Law looked up, meeting Shanks soft red eyes.
He took a deep breath and took hand
“Ok”
Chapter Text
The restaurant Shanks had chosen was in the heart of his territory. It was elegant but not gaudy. The host smiled when they entered, greeting Shanks by name as he led them to a small table towards the back of the restaurant that Shanks had reserved for the night, isolated enough to give them some privacy from the rest of the patrons. He set down the menus and a glass bottle of water, before leaving them to settle in.
Shanks stepped behind Law, gently removing his coat from his shoulders and setting it on the back of his chair. He fidgeted with the long black sleeves of his shirt, oddly thankful that his boss, Hongo, had managed to spill coffee on his scrubs at the end of his shift making him change before leaving.
Shanks smiled across the table
“A bottle of wine sound good”?
Law nodded absently.
“Any preference? Red, white, rose”?
“I don’t mind either way, I don’t drink much usually”
Shanks nodded, waving over one of the servers.
Law picked up the menu, almost choking on his water when Shanks ordered a bottle of champagne that easily would have cost more than their entire bill at a different restaurant.
He glanced at Shanks who was pursuing the menu as if it was nothing. It was obvious the restaurant was nice, but more so then he had originally thought. Modest but a place only people with money could afford to be regulars at. Not that it should be surprising given who he was sitting across from. Even on his salary as one of the best surgeons in the city, Law would never think to dine here.
That was the thing he still couldn’t wrap his mind around. Red-haired Shanks had asked him on a date. He’d never been on a date before. What were you supposed to talk about? Shanks' job was off the table. Normal people would probably be too scared or uncomfortable to ask about it and if he did it would seem suspicious. No sane person would ask the mafia boss about his job on the first date.
Only date.
There's no way this would lead to anything. Law wasn’t delusional enough to think this was anything but the Emperor following a whim for his own entertainment. He would flirt, maybe pay for dinner, and talk until he eventually got bored with Law then that would be it.
He just needed to make it through tonight
The issue was small talk. Something Law had never been particularly fond of. Whenever he hung out with friends, they did most of the talking. Most of his weekly social interaction came from the hospital. ‘Hello I’m going to be performing your surgery, yes I am qualified for my job no you can not request another surgeon’ or ‘I regret to inform you that your loved one was already in critical condition when they arrived, we did everything we could but unfortunately they have passed, you have my sincerest condolences’. Did that count? Maybe not but it was the best he had. He talked to people at the Heart Club too but… no absolutely not.
Completely lost in his own thoughts he didn’t notice the waiter returning with the wine until a glass was placed in front of him. He glanced up, meeting Shanks' eyes. His lips quirked up into a smile.
“Nervous”?
Somehow the question didn’t feel condescending but Law frowned nonetheless.
“Of course not”
The two quickly placed their orders. Shanks opted for the lobster and kimchi fried rice while Law settled on something simple and inexpensive, compared to the rest of the menu. Fortunately the restaurant specialized in Asian cuisine, making it easy to avoid bread without having to ask for modifications.
“So Law, How long have you lived in the city”
“A while. I lived here briefly before attending Drum university for their prestigious medical program, then moved back once I finished my degree”
Shanks chuckled
“I’m surprised you decided to come back, most people leave and never look back” Shanks said, his arms resting comfortably on the table.
Law shrugged
“I guess, I was just already used to the bullshit. Plus I had a lot of acquaintances that I still wanted to be close to”
“Quite brave of you, staying in this horrible, dangerous city just to be close to those you care about”
Law hummed, a small smirk on his face
“I wouldn’t call it that”
“Hot, Intelligent, Brave, you really are everything I could want in a man, huh”
Law frowned, ignoring the flush on his cheeks
“I think you give me too much credit” he drawled, absently swirling the champagne in his glass before taking a sip.
“Or perhaps not enough. I’ve heard you are the best surgeon in the city. I’m surprised no ones managed to claim you yet”
Law snorted into his glass
“Believe me they’ve tried. You know this date better not be a thinly veiled attempt to get me to join your crew”
Shanks gasped in mock offense, placing his hand on his chest
“I wouldn’t dream of it. No, this date is purely pleasure” he said with a wink
Law scoffed, covering his mouth and looking away in a vain attempt to hide how much Shanks words were affecting him.
And oh boy were they. Law spent the entire evening with his face flushed with embarrassment. Every other word out of Shanks mouth being a flattering compliment or some cheesy pickup line that shouldn’t make Law’s heart flutter the way it does. And yet Law finds himself smiling as they talk and eat. Most of their conversation stays around Law’s job and Shanks' hobbies. He learns that Shanks likes sailing, and drinking. He drinks a lot actually, having ordered another bottle of wine while Law was still on his first glass. He absently wondered what it would take for this man to get alcohol poisoning. The talk of sailing stretched on once Shanks learned that Law also enjoyed being out on the ocean, even if he didn’t own a proper vessel.
Law was surprised at how easy it was to talk to Shanks. Not about anything in particular, his friends, some asshole patients he had to deal with at the hospital, his cat, Kikoku, who much to Shachi’s distress seemed to only like Law. Shanks listened intently, leaving Law to wonder when he had last talked this much about himself to a stranger. As much as it confused him, he found he didn’t mind much at all. Shanks never asked prying questions and slowly Law felt his anxieties seep away.
By the time the waiter came to whisk away their plates Law had become quite content, sipping on the champagne while Shanks animatedly told him about a recent sailing trip with his friends. Once they had finished their drinks Shanks stood, offering Law his coat.
Law frowned
“We haven't gotten our check”
Shanks smiled as he helped Law with his coat.
“Don’t worry about the bill, I told them to put it on my tab”
Law leveled him with a flat look
“You have a tab at a restaurant where the dishes cost up to $100 a plate”?
“Why not”?
Law shook his head in exasperation but didn’t say anything else as they exited the building, bidding the host goodbye on their way out.
The moon glowed softly in the sky as they stepped out into the crisp night air. If Law had to guess it was probably approaching 11pm by now.
“Allow me to give you a ride home, it’s late and we are pretty far from the hospital” Shanks said as he led him back to where his car was parked.
Law gave him an odd look.
“I’d assume you live nearby if you walk to work”
Law nodded absently, giving his address without a second thought. The drive was short but even for that time Law couldn’t help but watch Shanks, who smirked as he glanced to the side catching law starring as he brought the car to a stop.
“Like what you see”? He asked, the teasing tone making Law look away to glare at the road.
“Maybe”
Shanks laughed, the sound warm and lacking any mocking tone Law may have expected.
Law scowled, opening the door and stepping out onto the sidewalk into front of his apartment building. Shanks' laughter died down as he followed Law, stopping to stand in front of him.
“Thank you, for such a wonderful evening Law. To be honest, I was sure you had only agreed to humor me. I’m glad you gave me a chance” Shanks smiled softly. He reached out and gently took Law’s hand in his own. Law’s face felt like it was on fire as chapped lips kissed the back of his hand, Shanks' eyes never leaving his face.
“Sleep well”
And with that Shanks stepped back and got into the car, leaving Law to stare wide eyed at the place Shanks stood moments before. He looked down at his hand, which was clenched into a fist at his side. He opened his palm to find a small piece of paper, a phone number scribbled onto it.
Despite the cold, Law’s chest felt so warm.
This man was going to be the death of him.

Chapter Text
Thankfully, the apartment was empty when Law entered after spending far too long staring at the stupid piece of paper. He was a fucking adult, soft innocent touches and cheesy pickup lines shouldn’t make his cheeks heat up the way they did. And yet, the entire evening had Law's heart beating loudly in his chest.
‘It didn’t mean anything’
Law repeated in his mind as he kicked off his boots, and dropped his bag on the table. He changed quickly, tossing his dirty clothes haphazardly onto the pile that he kept telling himself he would clean, but never quite got around to it. Law flopped onto the bed, groaning, as he was overcome with exhaustion, the aches of the day finally setting deep in his muscles. He curled up, pulling the fluffy white blanket tightly around him and hoped sleep would come quickly. The crumpled piece of paper still sat on his nightstand.
—
Over the next few days, the innocent piece of paper became the main source of Law’s stress. Sure, work was busy, maybe even more so than usual, but even that was barely enough to keep his mind occupied. Every moment he wasn’t performing a life saving operation or going over documents with his coworkers, his mind would wander to the new contact in his phone. No messages had been sent. Obviously, Shanks didn’t have Law's number. Which ment Law should contact him first. How? Did he even want that?
Did Shanks want that?
Law had spent many nights writing out messages at the kitchen table. Running a hand through his hair as he sighed in frustration and deleted the 6th draft that night. Too formal. Too casual. Too long.
He tossed his phone down, abandoning the task yet again.
As the days passed that ‘task’ fell further and further down his list as work piled up higher and higher until it left his mind completely.
—
Monday rolled around and Law, for the 5th time in the past week, considered quitting his job. He wouldn’t. All his friends said he was a workaholic and really he couldn’t say they were wrong. He wasn’t sure what he would do without the hospital to occupy his thoughts and time.
He dragged himself out of bed, his muscles protesting the movement the whole way but Law ignored his body's pleas to just stay and rest. The hospital needed him and he had already slept through his first 6 alarms, meaning he wouldn’t have time to get coffee if he wanted to be on time. The lounge usually had coffee. It wasn’t good but it would wake him up which is all it needed to do.
Law glared at his reflection as he stumbled into the bathroom. His hair was messy and maybe getting a bit too long but he really couldn’t be bothered to cut it. The deep purple that sat under his eyes had begun to look like bruises. Honestly he looked like a mess. Law sighed, rubbing his hand over his face before turning away from the mirror.
He was out the door within ten minutes, a feathered coat and warm scarf tucked around his neck as he walked out into the brisk autumn air. The walk to the hospital from his apartment wasn’t long, maybe 15 minutes. Bepo had worked an overnight shift and Shachi and Penguin were off for the next two days, leaving early with the car to visit Wolf who lived a couple hours outside the city. Law usually didn’t mind the walk but today every step took effort as he pulled himself down the street.
He burrowed his face deeper into the magenta scarf, glaring ahead.
“Law”!
Law stopped, turning to see who was calling out to him at, Law glanced at his watch, damn 5:45am.
Running down the street towards him was a familiar red headed figure. Shanks slowed as he approached, slightly out of breath with a huge smile across his face and two to-go cups in hand.
“I was worried I wouldn’t catch you. Here” He offered one of the cups to Law.
Law frowned but accepted the cup. The strong scent of coffee hit his nose and he could feel some of the tension leave his shoulders as he held the warm cup.
“Thank you” He said softly, taking a small sip of the drink.
Shanks grin widened
The caffeine made its way into Law's system, slowly waking up his tired mind. Law nodded his head, signaling for Shanks to walk with him. Shanks smiled, matching his pace.
Law frowned
“What are you doing up so early?" he asked. Sure, Shanks looked like a morning person but Law still couldn’t fathom why anybody would choose to be up at this god forsaken hour. Maybe he had work in the area? The idea of Shanks having business so close by made Law's stomach twist.
“Not much, I just happened to be up and thought to maybe get a cute doctor some coffee before work” He winked
Law narrowed his eyes for a moment before sighing. An obvious lie but Law couldn’t be bothered to question the Emperor.
“Whatever you say”

Chapter Text
Shanks being in the area turned out not to be a coincidence. Over the next week it became an odd part of Law’s routine. Wake up from a less than restful night of sleep, get ready to leave the apartment, Shanks would bring him coffee and walk him to the front of the hospital. It startled Law just how quickly he had become accustomed to Shanks presence in the morning. He had begun to look forward to the cheerful voice calling his name as he stepped out onto the street, content to listen to Shanks talk and flirt, humming in response to his stories. Though he never seemed to mind Law's lack of reply in the early morning. Law found himself smiling under the bulky scarf he wore, chucking softly at the Emperor's antics.
Today Law stepped out of his apartment, smiling softly under his scarf when he heard the familiar voice call out to him. Shanks passed him his usual coffee, holding out his hand which Law took without a second thought.
It was nice but Law couldn’t help but frown when he looked at Shanks. Dark bags had formed under his eyes. His original assessment about Shanks sleeping habits seemed to be incorrect. He was not, in fact, a morning person no matter how many times he denied it when asked.
The gesture was sweet but Law couldn’t allow him to keep wearing himself down.
The walk to the hospital passed in a blur and before he realized it they stood in front of the door.
“Well then, I’ll see you tomorrow doctor” Shanks waved as he stepped back
“Akagami-ya, wait”
Shanks paused
“You can’t keep doing this”
Shanks' brows furrowed in confusion before his eyes widened as a realization dawned on him. In a split second his face fell into something a little too neutral. He took a step back, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Ah, I thought… my apologies doctor”
Law narrowed his eyes
“Good. Honestly you should have told me you didn’t usually wake up this early, there was no reason to push yourself”
The neutral mask slipped into something more confused as Shanks stared at him.
“What-”
“If , for some reason, you wanted to spend time with me so badly there are other times”- Law rubbed the back of his neck, not quite looking at Shanks- “I know I usually am at the hospital late but I have lunch around 12 and there are occasional days off where i’m not busy”
Shanks face broke into a near blinding smile as Law spoke.
“So i’ll take you to lunch” He stated
Law nodded
“In that case I’ll see you tomorrow doctor”
“Get some rest Akagami-ya, I think you need it”
Shanks laughed as he waved goodbye.
Law sighed, turning to enter the hospital. He looked up as he entered and instantly met Bepo’s gaze who was waiting for him, an arm full of reports and Law’s schedule for the day in hand .
Bepo opened his mouth but Law cut him off before he could say anything.
“Don’t- breathe a word of this to the others” he said, a glare aimed at his friend.
Bepo smirked
“Of course not captain”
Law grumbled under his breath as he walked past his friend, accepting the reports that Bepo handed him.
He glanced down, narrowing his eyes at the first patient on the list.
“He’s back” Law said with a flat tone
Bepo nodded, giving him a sympathetic smile
Law sighed again, already getting the sinking feeling that today was going to be very long.
“Oh captain! Have fun on your date tomorrow” Bepo called behind him.
Law didn’t bother to turn, merely raising his hand in a rude gesture, uncaring of if anyone else saw.
Law made it to the locker room, quickly getting changed into his scrubs and white coat and removing his earrings. He grabbed a clipboard and the page with the patient's medical history. Taking the elevator up to the 3rd floor, Law found himself in front of the patient's room. He knocked twice before entering, not bothering to wait for a response.
“Mugiwara-ya, what did you do this time”?
“Shishishi! Hi Torao”!

Chapter Text
Two weeks later
Shanks hummed, tapping his foot to the beat of some song he had heard on the radio as he stood outside the hospital. Checking his watch, it was 8:35pm, 35 minutes after Law's shift should have ended. Law had warned him about coming into the hospital, but Shanks was pretty sure he was just embarrassed. Shanks smiled to himself as he remembered the cute blush that covered Law's cheeks when he told Shanks off for entering the hospital to look for him, going on about protocols and security and a lot of other stuff that Shanks frankly didn’t care too much about.
“What’s on your mind Akagami-ya”?
Shanks looked up, his smile softening as his eyes landed on the object of his affection.
“You”
Law scoffed, averting his eyes as he walked to Shanks' side. Shanks wasted no time in offering his hand which Law took after only a moment's hesitation.
The restaurant they were going to was a small sushi place that wasn’t far from the hospital and considerably less fancy then their first date. Law’s pick.
The walk was quiet but Shanks didn’t mind. Most of the time the trips were silent after Law's shifts, giving him time to rest his mind after a tiring day without instantly having to talk. Shanks was content to just be near him, letting Law slowly open up as the evening went on. He really couldn’t help it, just being near the doctor never failed to bring a smile to his face. Shanks was content to let Law turn off his mind, taking the lead as they walked the empty streets.
Although the longer they walked, a sense of unease wormed its way into Shanks chest. A feeling that he was intimately familiar with. On a normal day he never had to worry about the feeling of eyes on his back since he knew Benn had noticed and would handle it. But today Benn wasn’t here. Despite his protests Shanks had convinced his bodyguard to take the day off, insisting that he would scare off Law if he was following them around all evening.
Shanks cursed his decision as he led Law along, maybe taking a few more turns than necessary but if Law noticed, he didn’t say anything. Shanks tightened his hold on Law’s hand.
The feeling didn’t subside by the time they reached their destination.
They were being followed.
Of all the times, why now? He didn’t want this to happen when Law was around. Didn't want to get him involved with his work. This was still so new.
He would not let it be ruined by some fucker who thinks they can mess with him.
Shanks took a deep breath as they entered the restaurant, Law quickly leading the way to a table and flagging down a waiter.
“Want do you want, Shanks-ya”?
He glanced down at the menu. Everything looked good and he could feel Law’s thinly veiled impatience across the table. He smiled.
“What do you recommend”?
Law hummed before listing off their order to the waiter before thanking her as she left.
“I got a selection I think you might enjoy. I’ve also heard their sake is good, though i’m not sure it will be up to an emperors high standards”
Shanks laughed
“I’ll drink about anything”
Law sighed
“That doesn’t surprise me. I worry about your liver sometimes, you know” he said, his tone dry but Shanks could see the flicker of concern in his eyes.
“I assure you there’s no need to worry. My doctor takes great care of me” He said, almost laughing at the way Law’s brows furrowed for just a moment.
“Not better than you of course” He added, throwing a wink across the table.
Shanks adored watching the blush rapidly spread across Law’s face as he processed the words, sputtering
“I didn’t- just shut up” he grumbled, looking away from Shanks. Fortunately for him the waiter arrived with their food just in time to spare him from any more of Shanks flirting, for now.
Conversation continued as they ate, though Shanks wasn’t paying as much attention as he would like. Listening for anything out of the ordinary. Glancing out of the corner of his eye. He hadn't been able to get a good look at whoever was watching them. Waiting for something, but what Shanks didn’t know. If he was lucky, they wanted to catch him alone. That he could handle. As long as they left Law out of it. Maybe he should have Yassop or Lime keep an eye on him for the next couple of days. Just in case whoever is got any ideas about going after him. Law didn’t need any extra stress.
They paid (splitting the bill this time under threats of violence from Law) and headed out into the night. Shanks arm had migrated around Law waist, pulling him close against his side once Law didn’t protest the touch. His other hand rested on his waist where a concealed gun sat.
The restaurant was close to Law’s apartment so Shanks had offered to accompany him home, just like he did everytime. Law had scoffed but knowing any denial would fall on deaf ears he had merely huffed before leading the way.
A tension hung in the air as they walked, though Shanks was sure it was his own nerves. Beside him Law seemed completely relaxed. He leaned lightly against Shanks' side, breathing even as they walked.
The walk went quickly, in part due to Shanks subtle urgency. As they reached Law’s apartment Shanks stopped, glancing behind them.
Law tilted his head to follow Shanks gaze, a frown on his lips.
“See something”? He asked
Shanks shook his head
“No, must have been nothing”
The presence that he had felt since they left the hospital was gone.
Law hummed, pulling away from Shanks to face him. He stood for a moment, brows furrowed in thought before he leaned up to place a soft kiss to Shanks cheek. Barely a brush of his lips really but Shanks could feel the heat left behind even as Law quickly fled inside.
Heat filled Shanks cheeks as he stood there. All lingering anxiety brushed away with the touch of his lips. A smile broke across his face as he turned. Humming a tune to himself as he walked back to the bar. A hand resting on his hip, ready.
Chapter 6

Chapter Text
Law preferred routine. Familiar steps to repeat.
Wash his hands.
Put on gloves.
A mask.
Make sure the straps are securely fastened.
The repetition was… comforting. It let his mind go blank. No worries. No stress. Just the task at hand.
The body on the table groaned.
Law turned. Looking down at the man strapped to the operating table.
“So, want to tell me why you were following us”? He asked, tone steady as he picked up a scalpel.
“W-what? What are you doing?! Let me go!”
The man began to thrash, the sound echoing off the metal walls.
“No need to yell. I just want some answers”
His eyes narrowed
“Joker won’t let you get away with this” he spat
“…Joker”
The blade of his scalpel pressed against the man’s throat, a trickle of blood running down his neck as he swallowed.
“You haven’t told him about what you saw yet, yes”?- Law dragged the blade down to rest over the man’s heart. He smiled underneath the mask.
“Let’s keep it that way”
Chapter 7
Summary:
“Shanks-ya, what are you doing here”? He asked though his cutting tone made it more of an accusation than a question.
He raised his hands in surrender.
“I just wanted to see you, thought maybe we could grab a bite to eat?”
Law scowled, not meeting his eyes.
Notes:
Heyo I'm back! I appreciate all your patience for the past couple of months. Good news though, I am back and have a lot of fics in progress right now, mainly this one and for anyone who has read it the next chapter of Bonds and Partings is finally in the works! It will probably still be a bit before it's ready but I hope it will be worth the wait.
Anyway thank you all so much for your kind comments and continued support! I really hope you continue to enjoy this story.
Chapter Text
Shanks stood outside the front entrance to the hospital, watching the occasional person filter out as the sun set, casually leaning against his car. A bouquet of flowers waited in the backseat. They hadn’t made any plans to get dinner tonight but that wouldn’t deter him from trying to spend time with the doctor. Since their last date Shanks had been kept busy, both he and Benn had been on high alert, but whoever was following them seemed to have disappeared without a trace. Still, he hadn’t been able to shake that feeling of unease.
It didn’t matter though. Tonight, Benn was out so there was no one there telling Shanks that this was a bad idea. Even if “whoever it was” came back. Shanks would handle it.
His eyes were drawn back to the building at the sound of the doors opening, Law walking out into the cold, his shoulders hunched and deep bags under his eyes. Worse than usual.
“Shanks-ya, what are you doing here”? He asked though his cutting tone made it more of an accusation than a question.
He raised his hands in surrender.
“I just wanted to see you, thought maybe we could grab a bite to eat?”
Law scowled, not meeting his eyes.
“Not tonight, it’s been a long day and I…”- he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose-“I just need a break”
Shanks looked at the man in front of him. Law always seemed a bit stressed, but today was different. His body was a line of taut muscles. He looked as if he hadn’t slept since their last date. He probably hadn’t.
“Another time then, get some rest doctor” Shanks smiled softly
Law didn’t waste any time, briskly walking past the emperor.
“Another time”
—
The door slammed shut behind him. Law groaned, tossing his bag and coat aside.
Fuck he was suck a dick!
Shanks has been nothing but kind and patient since, whatever this was, started. And what? Law had one bad day and was asking for space?
What an asshole.
He flopped down on his bed, arm over his eyes.
It shouldn't even surprise him that Joker had managed to track him down. But the idea left a sour taste in his mouth. A pit growing in his stomach even after Joker's lackey was dealt with.
It didn’t matter now. He was tired, his body ached from a long day. He will deal with it tomorrow.
Eyes closed he drifted off to an uneasy sleep.
Chapter 8
Summary:
“Just give me a fucking minute” Law muttered as he fiddled with the lock. The knocking had begun to give him a headache.
He threw the door open.
“WHAT”?!
In the doorway stood Shanks. Eyes wide, one head raised to knock again the other holding a bouquet of carnations.
Notes:
Yay 2 in one night! have fun!
Chapter Text
Law awoke, gasping for air. Chest heaving as he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, working to slow his breathing, in for four, hold, out for four, repeat. He didn’t want to close his eyes, too worried the images would come back. His body felt heavy, even the thought of getting up to grab a glass of water for his sore throat felt like too much work. Time passed without him noticing as he lay there, no alarm to force him out of bed on his days off.
He couldn't bring himself to care.
On days like this, his friends would help. Make sure he got out of bed, ate, did more than just wallow in his own miserable thoughts. But they were all busy at the hospital and heart club. Without that push he continued to rot in bed. The sheets probably needed to be washed to clean away the stink of sweat and the pile of clothes in the corner of his room remained untouched.
Not that it really mattered
Hours passed. He couldn't fall back asleep but he didn’t get up. Moving took too much energy but sleep would mean more nightmares.
The sun was high in the sky by the time his body made him move. Finally getting up to slink to the bathroom, taking care of himself the best he could. Which really wasn’t great. Anyone who looked at him would tell him he looked like a mess. The bags under her eyes were dark, his facial hair becoming unkempt without regular maintenance.
He averted his eyes from his reflection, making his way to the living room.
He had nothing to do today. That was usually a problem. Without the routine of work he had a hard time bringing himself to do much. No hobbies, not many friends beyond his usual group. Boa… no he had bothered her enough with this. Law knew she would yell at him if she heard him say that.
Law lay on the couch, an arm draped over his eyes, blocking out the bright light. He groaned, briefly stumbling over to close the blinds before returning to the couch. A small chirp caught his attention. He cracked an eye open, moving his arm enough to see the long black cat as she rubbed against his arm.
“Kikoku”
She chirped again, looking up at him with large golden eyes. He pet her lazily, a half hearted attempt at affection but it was all he could muster. She was used to this by now. She had put up with him on worse days.
With a thump she landed on his chest. A rare purr rumbling in her chest as she kneaded, sharp claws pricking his skin. After a moment she curled up on his chest. The weight was familiar, comforting.
Before he even realized it he drifted off to sleep once more.
—
“Hold on”!
Law shuffled through the empty apartment.
The loud knocking that had awoken him from his sleep moments ago sent Kikoku scuttling away to his room.
He glanced at the kitchen clock as he passed.
10:00pm
Not Shachi, Penguin or Bepo, they wouldn't be home till at least 1am.
Who the hell was knocking this late?
“Just give me a fucking minute” Law muttered as he fiddled with the lock. The knocking had begun to give him a headache.
He threw the door open.
“WHAT”?!
In the doorway stood Shanks. Eyes wide, one head raised to knock again the other holding a bouquet of carnations.
Law stared, not really processing the man in front of him.
“Why are you here”? He cringed at the bite in his tone.
Fuck. Why was he like this?
Shanks didn’t react, just offered a slightly sheepish smile as he held out the flowers.
“Sorry about bothering you this late, I… wanted to give you these”
Law frowned, eyeing the flowers. Red carnations with a few pink strewn throughout.
‘Love, fascination, gratitude’
Nothing Law was deserving of
“Why”?
He didn’t take his eyes off of the flowers.
It had been two days since they had last spoken. A part of Law figured Shanks would be done with him after the rejection. Law wouldn’t have blamed him if he was. But no, here he was now with flowers, as if nothing had happened, as if Law didn’t look like a walking pile of shit that had just managed to pull himself out of bed.
“Do I need a reason”? Shanks asked.
After a moment of silence Law realized it was a genuine question.
Did he need a reason?
No, maybe not but…
Law couldn’t accept it without one. Not while Shanks was seeing a part of him that he didn’t like to show anyone. Not even his closest friends.
He couldn’t fathom why Shanks had come.
“Why are you here Shanks?” he repeated, his voice rough and tired from disuse.
Shanks smiled softened into something a little sad, eyebrows furrowed.
“Can I come in”?
Law looked away, stepping to the side so Shanks could walk past him into the apartment. He was fortunate that it was clean, save for his own room. Once Shanks was inside he closed the door behind him, shuffling back to the living room, returning to his place on the couch. A few moments later Kikoku returned, eyeing Shanks as she passed. His mind wandered as he pet her dark fur.
Shanks was quiet, save for a soft humming as he made his way to the kitchen. Law didn’t really care. He didn’t want anyone to be here, honestly he should have told Shanks to leave. He didn’t understand why that was so hard. Or why he couldn’t help but feel the tension ease from his shoulders at the emperor's presence in his home. It shouldn’t be so easy for someone to settle into his life like this. Law was aware he was paranoid and untrusting, but that's what’s kept him going for so long. He should be suspicious of Shanks intentions, unsettled by his presence in his home.
But no…
Law slumped against the couch, curling around Kikoku as he listened to her rumbling purrs and the sounds of Shanks shuffling in the kitchen.
His eyes blinked open slowly at the sound of a glass being set on the coffee table in front of him.
Shanks sat down next to him, a glass of water in his hand and another in front of Law. The carnations were arranged neatly in a vase on the counter. After not moving for a moment Shanks handed Law the glass.
“You should drink something”
Law nodded, taking the glass. They sat in silence for a bit as Law drank. He set the half empty glass back down.
“Thank you”- he still didn’t look at Shanks- “sorry I-“
“We don’t have to talk if you don’t want to”
Law felt his cheeks heat a little, he wondered how Shanks managed to read him so well. He settled for nodding.
And that was that. The silence went on for a bit before Shanks put on some movie that Law didn’t recognize. His mind moved slowly, not processing the words coming from the tv as he zoned out. The heaviness had returned to his body, the small interaction having drained energy he didn’t have. He felt his head droop, his eyes fluttering closed as he let the noises of the apartment and Shanks steady presence lulled him to sleep.
—
Shanks sat quietly, not paying much attention to the movie but the man next to him instead. Law had slumped against the couch, his head resting on Shanks shoulder as he dozed. He leaned his arm on the back of the couch, letting his impulses win as his fingers lightly played with Law’s hair. The surgeon didn’t stir, just muttering under his breath as he nestled closer to Shanks. Shanks smiled softly, his brows creasing just slightly.
Shanks hadn’t been able to stop thinking about their last interaction. He knew Law could be bitey and antisocial but something about his tone and the tension in his shoulders had set him on edge. His heart clenched as he looked at Law now. Dark shadows around his eyes and unkempt hair. It was obvious he wasn’t taking care of himself. Shanks couldn’t help but wonder if something happened to throw him into this state.
He sighed, he leaned in, gently pushing away the greasy hair from Law’s face and kissed his forehead.
Law would tell him if he wanted him to know. For now he would just stay close and take care of the doctor as much as he would let him.
Chapter 9
Summary:
The silence was broken by a high pitched shriek hat echoed through the tiny apartment.
“Who the fuck-”?!
Notes:
Heyo! Sorry for the long wait but I’m back with a new chapter. Waits between chapters will probably continue to be long but I will do my best to keep writing🙏
Chapter Text
The silence was broken by a high pitched shriek hat echoed through the tiny apartment.
In an instant Shanks was up. He shoved Law behind him, ignoring the surprised yelp as he pulled out his gun, pointing it at intruders.
“Who the fuck-”?!
“OH MY GOD HE HAS A GUN”!
“Shit is Law ok”!?
The voices were loud and panicked but nobody moved, staring at the gun with wide fearful eyes.
Shanks glared. He didn’t immediately recognize any of them as being associated with a gang but he couldn’t be sure. There were three, a ginger with tinted sunglasses, a man wearing a cap with a cartoon penguin on it, and a large man with short white hair. All of them wore scrubs and clutched bags to their chests. The man with the penguin hat held a ring of keys in his hand.
Law grabbed his arm, forcing him to lower his gun. Shanks let him, looking over curiously at where Law leaned over his shoulder with an annoyed expression.
“Stop that. They live here” he said, his voice rough from sleep. He slumped against Shanks' back, clearly not quite awake yet.
Shanks put the gun away, smiling sheepishly at the startled nurses.
“My bad, sorry about that”
The ginger let out a breath, leaning against the white haired man.
“Holy shit dude, I thought you were going to kill us!”
The man with the hat set his bag on the counter, eyeing the vase of flowers before turning his attention back to the pair on the couch.
“Seriously Law, warn us if you're having someone over. Or warn him!”
Law grumbled, his face pressed against Shanks shoulder.
“It’s not like I invited him”
The large man jumped slightly, a look of panic flashing across his face. He looked familiar but Shanks couldn’t quite place it.
“He broke in”?! He squeaked
The other two started creeping further into the apartment, staying as far as possible from Shanks. Not that it would help.
Law waved a hand vaguely in the direction of the door.
“I let him in”
They jumped, practically latching onto each other as they stared in shock.
“WHY”??!!
The white haired man put a hand on the ginger's shoulder, leaning in to whisper in his ear.
“WHAT?! Bepo how do you-?”
The man, Bepo, shushed him before leaning over to whisper to the other man. The group exchanged whispers for a moment before the pair ran over, any fear clearly forgotten as they rushed Law, squishing onto the couch next to him. Law hissed, glaring at them as they leaned in, pressing him further against Shanks.
“You’ve been seeing an Emperor?! and you didn’t tell us”!
“You said he wasn't going to remember asking you out”
“How long have you been seeing each other”?
“Why haven't you introduced us”?
Law groaned, shoving them away.
“This is why I didn’t tell you”
The ginger pouted
“But you told Bepo”
“No, I didn’t… Bepo saw us”
The pair whipped around to face Bepo who put his hands up in surrender.
“He told me not to”!
Law sat back, still leaning against Shanks. He sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose as he addressed the group
“Let's get this over with. This is Shanks. And these are my roomates”- He pointed at the ginger-“Shachi”- the man with the hat -“Penguin”- and the man with white hair- ,And Bepo”
Penguin and Bepo nodded politely. Shachi pushed into Law's space, getting a scowl from him as he grinned at Shanks.
“So have you guys kissed”?
Shanks blinked at him. Law choked.
“SHACHI”!
Shachi leaned back, a grin still on his face.
“What? I was just curious. But really I’m happy for you! God knows you haven't gotten laid, like, ever. It will be good for you”!
Shanks watched with amusement as Law’s face rapidly changed color, flushing a pretty red. He practically tackled Shachi onto the couch, forcing a laughing Penguin to move out of the way as they scuffled. Shanks smiled softly as he watched. The presence of Law's roommates seems to have perked Law up a bit. Well… maybe not but it’s certainly a distraction.
His chest filled with warmth as he watched the friends bicker. He wanted more of this. He wanted to see every aspect of Law’s life, learn more and more about him. He hopes Law will let him in one day. Invite him into his life like this. Right now it almost felt like he shouldn’t be here, like he was intruding on a more private aspect of Law's life. He kind of was. He doesn't regret it though. He would never regret being with Law.
His smile widened
Maybe it was time to let Law into his life as well.
