Chapter Text

It was late at night again, and Diluc didn’t feel like traveling all the way back to The Dawn Winery. As he was rounding up his patrol for the night he saw that the light was still on in Kaeya’s apartment. Deciding to check if maybe Kaeya fell asleep while working again, he climbed the walls of the building.

When he reached the window, Diluc was surprised to find that Kaeya was still awake. He was working hard on a document, so he hadn’t noticed Diluc half hanging from his windowsill. “Hey, idiot.” Kaeya flinched at the familiar voice. Turning around he spoke in a surprised and half annoyed voice. “Diluc? What brings you here?” Kaeya sighed as he walked over and helped pull the other inside.

“It got late so I decided to check if I could stay here.” Kaeya looked on skeptically, before looking outside and sighing once more. “Fine, but I am warning you my bed is pretty small, so if you want to change your mind or sleep on the sofa those options are always open.”

Diluc looked over to said ‘sofa’ and internally cringed, it looked incredibly uncomfortable. “I’ll take sharing the bed.” Kaeya nodded his head before walking over to his desk once more so he could continue his work. “Are you going to keep working this late into the night?” Kaeya didn’t even look back as he responded. “Yes.”

Diluc looked at Kaeya, before deciding to stop the other's habit of forgetting to take care of himself. He walked over to the bed and picked the blanket up, sneaking up behind the blue haired knight, he quickly wrapped him up in the blanket. Completely ignoring Kaeya’s indignant yells, he threw the other over his shoulder before walking over to the bed, not before turning off the lights, and keeping the other trapped there.

“DILUC LET ME GO!! I STILL HAVE SO MUCH WORK TO DO!” “No.” “LET! ME! GO!” “Nope.” “AAAH DILUC I WILL BITE YOU IF YOU DO NOT FREE ME RIGHT NOW!!” “I would like to see you try.” Kaeya struggled for about 10 more minutes before finally tiring himself out. Seeing how each attempt at fighting back had failed, he decided to just give in for the night. Unconsciously moving closer to Diluc, Kaeya quickly drifted off to sleep.

Diluc smiled happily at his victory, and let himself drift off too, although his sleep came a bit slower, since he felt the need to protect Kaeya, even in his sleep.

Chapter Text

Diluc woke up to the sun shining in his eyes, and even though he would usually immediately wake up with it, he felt comfortable enough that he wanted to keep sleeping. Although he couldn't stop his slowly awakening brain, he soon remembered that he wasn't at home right now. Although, he felt way more at home in Kaeya's shabby apartment than his actual home.

Diluc opened his eyes to take a better look at the state the blue haired knight's apartment was in. It was rather clean, which he had not completely expected. The only messy place was his desk because of the fight he had put up last night. The only real downside to the apartment was that it was so empty, only really holding the bare necessities.

Diluc decided that he would start getting some more furniture for Kaeya. Which brought him to a plan. If he were to visit Kaeya under the guise of being too tired to walk all the way back home, he could maybe try and rectify their relationship!

It was clear that his previous plans of asking Kaeya (in an indirect way but still) to stay at Dawn Winery had all failed, and whenever Diluc carried a drunk Kaeya back to said Winery, the blue haired knight would already have left before Diluc woke up. Always with the excuse of having to go to work.

This was the best option he had so far, he looked back down at the still sleeping man, and felt inexplicably happy. This was going to work, he would make sure of it. Gently pushing some of the hair away from Kaeya’s face, Diluc noticed that he was still wearing his eyepatch. ‘That’s gotta have been uncomfortable.’ Right as Diluc was going to touch it again, Kaeya woke up with a start.

“What are you doing?” He sounded slightly angry. “Isn’t it annoying to sleep with an eyepatch on?” Kaeya turned away from Diluc. “It’s fine, don’t bother caring now.” The red head flinched at that. “I see….”

A minor setback to his plan, but Diluc can handle this. He quickly came up with a plan to apologize. Getting out of the cramped bed, he walked over to the shabby kitchen. Not noticing the slightly regretfull look Kaeya gave him. Looking through the cupboards, he quickly noticed that there was not much food in Kaeya’s apartment. Just mostly easy to prepare foods.

Sighing slightly, Diluc opted to just make some chicken skewers and some eggs, deciding that later that day he would go get some groceries. When he was almost done with breakfast, and with the lunchbox he had decided to make as a second thought, He heard footsteps approaching him.

“What uh… what’s for breakfast?” Kaeya sounded slightly awkward, clearly still upset, but now more at himself for lashing out. “Wel for breakfast I made us some eggs, and for lunch I made you some chicken skewers.” Kaeya lit up at the mention of chicken skewers, but hid his excitement with words. “Okay.”

Diluc still noticed the other’s happiness, and smiled slightly at the other. After plating the eggs and placing them on the table they quickly ate, both actually almost being late for work. Although Diluc is his own boss, he still has a lot to do, and does not want to be reprimanded by Adelinde, she is quite scary when need be. He felt a chill go down his spine.

They both left at the same time, but not after Diluc forced Kaeya to take the lunchbox with him (it hadn’t taken much convincing). They went their separate ways as Kaeya went to the Knights of Favonius office and Diluc went to Dawn Winery

*********************************

Kaeya walked into his office, he felt well rested for the first time in years. It was strange, and he kinda wanted Diluc to stay more often. Of course he knew not to hope, he had long given up on trying. Jean seemed to notice his unfocused expression as she walked past his office.

“Kaeya? You okay?" Said Knight looked up. “Oh? Why yes I am fine! No need to worry about me Jean.” He put on his trademark smile. “Are you sure? You aren’t overworking yourself are you?” Kaeya shook his head with a half laugh. “Trust me Jean, I would not be here if I were to be doing that.” She decided to let the matter go at that point. “Okay, just tell me if you need help with anything.” “Okay okay, just go back to work Jean.”

Right as Jean left, Kaeya’s smile fell. It was hard to keep acting, but he didn’t want his friends to leave him too. It would be too lonely then. Deciding to stop dwelling on the possible future, he continued his work.

It was later than he had expected when he suddenly heard a knock on his office's door. "Come in." He was shocked to see Diluc enter. "Wuh- What are you doing here?" Diluc just ignored that question for the time being and walked over to Kaeya's desk.

Looking into the lunchbox he was happy that the blue haired knight ate something, but he clearly didn't eat enough. "Why didn't you finish your lunch?" Kaeya turned away, thinking of excuses so he wouldn't get scolded. "I uh… wasn't hungry?" It was stated too much like a question, so upon looking back at Diluc, the latter was looking at him with an unimpressed stare.

"Did you eat dinner?" Kaeya felt a drop of sweat roll down his cheek. "N-no?" Diluc then quickly picked up the bluenette before walking back towards Kaeya's apartment. "HEY! WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS? I CAN WALK MYSELF YOU KNOW!" His yells got ignored.

Once at his apartment, Kaeya watched as Diluc pulled out ingredients he had bought, placing some away in his cupboards while using others to cook dinner. "It's past twelve, how have you not eaten dinner yet?" Kaeya sighed a bit. "I was busy okay?" Diluc turned to send a halfhearted glare his way. "I was busy too, but I still ate dinner." There was no fighting that, so Kaeya just let himself slide back down the backrest of the sofa.

He heard Diluc let out an almost sad sigh. "Listen, I am just worried about you okay?" Kaeya didn't respond, but he was willing to listen, Diluc seemed to notice that too, which was good. "You clearly work too much, I don't know how you keep having this much work left to do every day."

Deciding to speak up for once, Kaeya looked at Diluc. "It's not my work, I often take some of Jean's work too since she has so much and keeps overworking herself." He turned away after seeing Diluc's incredulous look. "So you decide to overwork yourself?" He didn't sound completely angry, more like a worried parent who just found their runaway kid.

"It's fine, I can handle it." Diluc sighed again, but let it go. "Fine, have it your way." Kaeya felt slightly guilty at that, but decided to just be happy that he won the argument.

Although he started to debate if he really had won, when Diluc placed a plate of deliciously made food in front of him. 'Maybe it's more like a tie… yeah… we both tied for this argument… I didn't lose at all!'

Although he wanted to not eat the food that was given to him, he couldn't help it. It smelled too good, and he was really hungry. The food was so worth it too, since at the first bite Kaeya felt pure bliss at the flavor.

After both of them ate their dinners, Kaeya didn't even ask Diluc if he would stay, already expecting him to. So he wasn’t surprised when he did end up saying he would stay the night.

Both getting under the covers of Kaeya's shabby bed, the blue haired knight felt comfort in the warmth Diluc radiated by being close to him. He let himself drift off into slumber while subconsciously clinging to the hope that this would happen again, that Diluc would stay this time. Unknowing of the fact that Diluc wasn't planning on leaving anymore anyway.

Chapter Text

It had been a few days since Diluc had been acting too tired to go back home and just stayed at Kaeya’s apartment, he had been able to take care of Kaeya like he had been planning to. Sadly that night Diluc would be too busy to stay at Kaeya’s place, but he had forgotten to tell Kaeya that.

********************************************

When Kaeya got home after an expedition expecting to see Diluc already there, he was surprised to see that the other wasn’t present at all. He even went all around his apartment looking for him, but he wasn’t there. Thinking that he must have just been busy, he decided to wait. He waited for hours until he finally fell asleep.

His sleep only lasted a short while before he awoke from a nightmare, he hadn’t had one in the last few days so he was shocked at their sudden return. Opening his eye, he noticed that he fell asleep on his sofa. He should really replace it since he felt a crick in his neck from the uncomfortable fabric. He also noticed at that moment that Diluc hadn’t shown up at all, making him feel sad for some reason.

Feeling a sudden coldness creep up on him at that thought, he decided to move to his bed and crawl under the warm covers. But the once warm covers were no longer as warm, and the arms that would usually keep him in their embrace were no longer there.

He couldn’t stop the tears at the sudden cold spell, not noticing that it was his vision that was causing it. Shivering and crying he drifted off to sleep.

********************************************

Kaeya woke up just as cold as when he fell asleep, this time however he noticed that it was him who was making the room so cold, seeing some frost on the walls and a few snowflakes floating off of him. He reached out to his vision and came to the conclusion that he should probably ask for the day off. As there was an abyss black blob forming inside the godly device. Knowing he would just have to suffer through this coldness alone since Diluc had left him again, he curled up under his blanket and tried to fight off his shivers.

********************************************

Diluc got called to the Knights of Favonius headquarters, he had no idea why but still went. Upon reaching Jean’s office he saw both Venti and the previously mentioned current head of the knights. He was slightly confused but just walked in.

“Thank you for coming here master Diluc, I know you must be busy but this seems to prove rather urgent.” She looked over to Venti, who spoke next. “I am worried about Kaeya, and I think you have to go check up on him.” Diluc started getting worried. ‘This must be something important if lord Barbatos himself is worried.’ Looking up Diluc spoke. “Okay, I will go check on him. Is that all?” Jean nodded her head and allowed him to take his leave.

When Diluc reached Kaeya’s apartment he was slightly worried at seeing a bit of frost on the door, it was the middle of summer after all. ‘This really is bad, Venti was right.’ Once he was able to open the door with a lot of trouble, he noticed just how much he underestimated the situation. He rushed over to Kaeya’s bedroom.

Upon entering said room he was shocked. There were icicles forming on the ceiling and the room felt even colder than Dragonspire. He saw Kaeya shivering underneath his blanket and quickly rushed over. “Kaeya? Hey are you awake?” He saw the other peaking out a little from his blanket cocoon to look at Diluc. “Luc? It’s cold.” His voice sounded weak. Diluc didn’t think twice, he quickly lifted up part of the blanket and went under it to hold Kaeya close to him.

Activating his pyro vision in order to help the other heat up more, he wondered how this even happened. But his first priority was to help the other first, he felt too cold. Over the next half an hour Kaeya kept shivering while Diluc watched as the Icicles started to melt. When the room had fully thawed, only then did Kaeya fall into a comfortable sleep. Diluc was glad about that, having noticed his eyebags.

“Sleep tight, we will talk about this later.” Diluc sighed, this was not what he had planned for today, he still had a lot of work to do. So he called for his hawk, which quickly flew over and took the little paper Diluc attached to his leg before flying off to bring the message to Adelinde in order for her to handle the rest of the work.

Diluc felt guilty about how much Adelinde always does for him, but he couldn’t really prevent this. Looking back down at the clingy bluenette he suddenly noticed the now almost completely black vision lying nearby. Carefully picking it up and inspecting it he noticed that when he touched the dark spots, the abyss-like substance started to dissipate.

After clearing the vision from the strange black parts, he placed it on the side table. Curling more protectively at the now warmer sleeping man, Diluc felt surprisingly tired. ‘Had getting rid of the black stuff taken that much energy?’ Closing his eyes, he felt Kaeya move a bit closer. His last thought before sleep claimed him was that he should buy Kaeya a bigger bed.

Chapter Text

It had been 3 weeks since Diluc first ended up staying over at kaeya’s apartment, and Kaeya got so used to him being there that on the days that he isn’t there, he can’t sleep. Whenever that happens he tries to fall asleep by drinking a bottle of wine, but that never helps. He doesn’t even remember how he was able to fall asleep before he had Diluc to sleep right next to.

Which reminds him that Diluc basically now owns Kaeya’s apartment too, since it used to be very minimalistic but now it has velvet curtains, plush carpeting, new dishes and even a love seat which now replaces the previously worn out couch. The biggest (literally) change was the new bed Diluc replaced, it wasn’t as big as Diluc’s bed at Dawn Winery, but it was still bigger than his previous bed. It probably wasn’t any bigger since if it were, there would have been no room to walk around in the bedroom anymore.

Kaeya was thinking about all of this as he returned from a mission that took longer than he had hoped for, he had ended up having to eat a quick snack of some roasted mushrooms since he hadn’t had dinner. ‘Those damned treasure hoarders ended up destroying my lunchbox that Diluc had prepared.’ Kaeya had been so angry after that that those treasure hoarders were now definitely traumatized.

Opening his door to a dark living room, he thought that Diluc must’ve stayed at Dawn Winery that night, so he was very surprised to see that once he got ready with his bottle of wine and walked in his room he saw Diluc asleep on their bed. It was definitely their bed now, which was a slight shock, since it used to be just his, but now he sees it as something that they were always meant to share.

Placing the bottle on his desk, he walked over to their bed and laid down next to Diluc, cuddling closer to him, like he had been doing a lot lately. He felt the other move his arms around him, wrapping one leg over him as well. And sleepily whisper a soft. “You are cold.” Kaeya chuckled and purposefully pressed his cold hands against Diluc’s face. Laughing softly at the way Diluc’s face contorted.

Diluc just pulled Kaeya closer to him, subsequently trapping him. The bluenette didn’t even fight back, just relishing in the warmth. sighing sleepily, Kaeya noticed how this is exactly like how it used to be when they were kids. They often used to sneak into each other's room and cuddle like this. He fell asleep to the comforting feeling of nostalgia.

Kaeya woke up feeling starved, which made sense since all he ate for dinner yesterday was some roasted mushrooms. He sleepily sat up, successfully waking Diluc up in the process. “Why are you awake so early? the sun isn’t even up yet.” Kaeya rubbed his eyes. “I am hungry, so Imma just get a snack.” He carefully stepped off of the bed. “Why are you hungry? Was the lunch I prepared not enough? Should I prepare more next time?” Diluc had been planning on trying to get Kaeya to eat more, since he was still mostly starving himself and that worried him. ‘He clearly doesn’t eat enough, so I am happy he is starting to feel hungry for once!’

“I didn’t get to eat it.” That shocked Diluc. “What? Why?” Kaeya sounded angry. “Because some treasure hoarders destroyed the lunch you prepared.” Diluc sighed and got up as well. “I’ll make you a new lunch then.” Kaeya turned around bewildered. “What? No you don’t have to do that! I can just eat a snack.” Diluc glared halfheartedly at the blue haired knight. “No, I will make you an early breakfast.”

Just then Diluc noticed the wine bottle standing on Kaeya’s desk. “And no alcohol.” He quickly picked up the bottle as Kaeya started jokingly pleading for just a sip. That’s how their morning started. Kaeya ended up eating a lot, and Diluc just watched feeling relieved that the other seemed to be doing a lot better.

“Hey Diluc?” “Hm?” Kaeya started to fidget a bit, confusing Diluc. “Why… why are you suddenly so nice?” “Was I not nice before?” Diluc saw Kaeya cringe back. “N-no! But I just thought you hated me….” Diluc gently took Kaeya’s hand. “Of course I don’t hate you, I just…. Didn’t know how to deal with my emotions.” Kaeya looked up at that moment with an inquisitive stare. “What emotions?” Diluc turned away blushing hard. “N-nothing don’t worry about it.”

Kaeya started to tease Diluc about it for a while afterwards untill he finally gave in. “FINE!! I LOVE YOU OKAY??” Diluc Immediately shrunk back, this was not how he was planning to confess. He hesitantly looked up at Kaeya. Seeing him process his words carefully made him both worried and slightly hopeful. “You love me?” Diluc sighed. “Yes….”

Kaeya smiled brightly at that. “Then…. How about… We try going on a date?” Diluc looked up at a now very shy Kaeya. “Yes? Wait really?” It took him a few seconds to process that Kaeya reciprocated the feeling. “I would love to!” Seeing Kaeya’s blushing face and small smile, made Diluc inexplicably happy.

They made plans for their date, deciding to go to some ruins to have a picknick in a week. Both were extremely excited.

Chapter Text

A week had passed and it was time for them to go on their date. They were going to go to a newly discovered ruin, planning on scouting the area for threats at the same time. On their way there they kept talking about whatever came to mind, just like how it used to be.

Once they were at the newly discovered ruins Kaeya noticed how he was able to read what was written on the walls. Feeling slightly suspicious of the strange drawings that aren’t even written in K’heanrian let alone Teyvattan. He turned to look at Diluc who didn’t even glance at the strange symbols. Deciding to let it go and just start on their picnic Kaeya helped Diluc with grabbing all of the food and setting it up on a blanket.

Still Kaeya couldn’t help but keep glancing back at the mysterious symbols feeling a strange connection to them. He flinched hard when he suddenly saw the symbols start to glow, flashing millions of memories in front of his eyes in less than a second. His breathing picked up at the newly gained knowledge that barely got processed.

“Kaeya?” He didn’t respond, not because he didn’t want to but because he felt like his body was paralyzed. “Hey, you okay?” Diluc walked in front of Kaeya trying to get him to stop staring at the runes in pure horror. Still no response came, he wasn’t even sure if Kaeya could see him at that moment. Turning around to look at the symbols all he knew was that he couldn’t really read or recognise them.

He was about to walk towards them when he heard a thud behind him. Quickly turning around he saw that Kaeya had passed out, confused and startled out of his mind he rushed over. “Kaeya?!?” He started shaking the blue haired knight, but he didn’t wake up. “HEY! KAE WAKE UP!!” Nothing. He quickly checked his heartbeat just to find out that it was no longer present. Horror welled up within him. ‘No-nononononono he had just gotten him back, he can’t lose him too.’ Suddenly his attention got caught by Kaeya’s vision, it was turning pure black, just like that one night.

He quickly took hold of it trying to get it to stop like that time, it didn’t work for some reason making him panic all the more. When it had fully turned an abyssal black, Diluc saw his vision start to blur, the last thing he saw before passing out too was a black peacock feather growing out of Kaeya’s vision.

********************************************

Diluc felt unbearably hot. It felt like he was literally going up in flames. When he opened his eyes he noticed that he was on some kind of pure white fluffy cloud. He didn’t remember how he got here or what had happened before he woke up, but all he knew was that he had to go look for someone. His brain told him that that someone was his opposite, and he was supposed to protect him at all costs.

Trying to get up, he quickly fell back through his knees as they refused to work properly. Confusion hit him at that, but he just brushed it off. Deciding to instead look around he saw that he had these two beautiful firey wings. For some reason he felt relieved to have them again. Not knowing why he had felt like he had lost them before.

He also noticed that the sky was split into two, the area where he was had this beautiful sunny sky with fluffy white clouds and a bright sun. The other part of the sky was pitch black, it reminded him of the void. There was a big moon surrounded by millions of stars. What caught his attention though was the man sitting on top of said moon. He had these pitch black wings and a tail that reminded him of a peacock. He didn’t fully remember what a peacock was but it sounded right. He looked back at his wings and thought that they looked like those of a phoenix, noticing how he had a tail too he was even more happy.

Turning back around he observed the other bird person. Said man was looking directly at him too, but the forlorn expression confused Diluc. He saw him mouth a sorry before he felt his eyes forcefully close.

Memories fluttered before his closed eyelids, making him incredibly confused. It was almost painful. Once that all stopped he was surrounded by pure darkness, at first making him panic, until he laid the connection that it reminded him of the other man and his void like appearance. He fell into a peaceful slumber.

************************************************

When Diluc awoke again, the first thing he did was turn to look at Kaeya. Seeing him still breathing calmed him down. He was still asleep, but he didn’t seem to be suffering anymore. The next thing Diluc noticed was that he still had the wings from his strange dream, his vision had also now been turned into some strange lava red light instead of its normal pyro symbol. Looking over to Kaeya’s vision it was still that abyssal black, having sprouted some equally black peacock feathers, just like his had grown these burning phoenix feathers. The last thing he noticed was that Kaeya had turned into his original form, now knowing the truth about both of them.

He carefully reached out to the other. taking the other’s hand he felt at ease. “You know I forgive you right?” The only response he got was Kaeya’s hand tightening slightly. “Heh, trust me I don’t blame you, you were forced to lock up my abilities.” Kaeya turned towards him, there were tears streaming from his eyes. “Luc I didn’t want-” Diluc interrupted him. “I know, trust me I know.” He reached out and wiped the tears from his opposite’s eyes. “You didn’t have to lock up your own abilities too, you know.” Diluc had a sad smile on his face. “I am sorry.” Diluc pulled Kaeya close to him, wrapping his wings around the other. “I know. I know.”

They stayed like that for a while. Diluc thinking up some plans on how to take revenge on the K’heanrian’s who had hurt Kaeya so much that they had been able to brainwash him. He didn’t blame Kaeya for their fight 500 years ago, he didn’t forgive the K’heanrians though.

When the sun started to go down, they decided to go back. Turning back into their fully human forms, they started walking back towards Kaeya’s apartment. Once there they went straight to bed. Today was hectic after all.

*************************************************

After a few more (successful) dates, they decided to officially start dating. Jean was proud of them, Lisa poked fun at how long it took them, Klee was happy to have a new brother, Amber ended up giving them matching bows, which both men found too embarrassing to wear. All in all everyone was happy, including the two idiots.

Things were going well, even with Kaeya and Diluc now yet again knowing their real purposes. Day and Night still kept on going, living in harmony for the rest of time.
