Chapter 1: Panathenaia
Chapter Text
Welcome to Olympus GOS! The #1 place to learn all the Olympian’s dirty secrets!
A young looking, lavender nymph appeared on the TV. She wore a short, glittery dress that complimented her curly, dolled up hair. “ Tonight, we’ll be talking about the event of the year: Zeus’ Panathenaia! Everybody who’s anybody will be there.”
A photo of Zeus and Hera, presumably taken by paparazzi, came up. “While Zeus says he’s done all the planning, Hera’s influence is hard to ignore! Maybe this time they’ll leave with each other, instead of other people! "
While she continued, a woman walked into her living room. Her apartment was small, yet stylish. Sleek shiny surfaces paired with dark, hard wooden floors. But piles of shoes and coats dirted it up.
She wrapped herself in a towel, making her way towards the TV. Her hand scoured over the coffee table, covered in empty take out boxes and cigarette cartons.
A few photos of various Olympians appeared. “We know most of the regulars, but the biggest question of all is with the moody King of the Underworld!”
A photo of Hades popped up, more professional looking than the others.
Her hand flinched as it hovered over the remote.
“Will he bring anyone? A new girl on his arm? It’d be the perfect opportunity! Ever since his breakup, it’s all anyone’s been talking about. He deserves it! Besides, that Minty girl was a huge harpy-”
She shut it off.
“Gods, that shit is annoying.” She tossed the remote on her black, leather couch. “Don’t they have better things to do?” Minthe strode back to her bedroom, away from the messy living room.
3 months.
It’d been 3 months since she walked out of his life. Away from gossiping gods, paparazzi watching her every move. Away from his family, barely hiding their disdain for her.
Well, she didn’t do much walking. He did.
And although Minthe hated him now, she hated him leaving even more.
Minthe took off her towel. As she put on a black slip dress and underwear, her mind unfortunately wandered to the party. She wondered, if they were still together, what would’ve happened?
She slipped into her bed, layered with black sheets. He’d probably twist her arm to go, despite knowing how uncomfortable it made her. She’d string him along, until he finally pacified her with an expensive gift.
And, to make things “difficult,” still wouldn’t go.
Minthe wasn’t proud of it. Or herself. But their relationship was never sunshine and roses. It was messed up. They were messed up.
If Hades ever thought they could be stable, then he was dumber than she realized.
As Minthe drifted off to sleep, she knew one thing. Hades would come alone, and leave alone. He was still stuck in his depressed, workaholic phase. If his demeanor in the office was an indicator.
Besides, he couldn’t forget her that easily. He wouldn’t.
He can’t.
~~~
Minthe groaned as her alarm woke her up. She fumbled blindly for her phone. “Mmmgh off off of--”
She turned it on. The first thing that caught her eye was the time: 11:26 am. Not early enough to keep sleeping.
The second thing was a headline from Underworld Media:“Mysterious Pink Woman Seen Walking Out Of Hades’ Mansion!”
Minthe shot up from her bed, gripping her phone. “What?”
Against her judgment, she opened the notification:
“Local paparazzi stalking the Panathenaia believed Hades left alone. But recent updates say otherwise! A young, pink woman was seen walking from Hades’ house around 8/9 this morning. Is this a fling, or something more? Will we see her again? Stay tuned for future updates!”
Anger quickly rose inside her. “What the f-”
~~~
“Yeah…they definitely fucked.”
Minthe stomped around her apartment, dawning a black robe. Her phone stayed tight in her grasp. “Well obviously they did, Thetis! Everyone can see that!”
“And poor little thing went out the front door. That’s the first place paparazzi look.” Thetis sucked her teeth over the phone. “This’ll be awful for-”
“Um, hello?! She’s ruining my day!" Minthe shouted. “I can’t believe he’s rebounding. It’s only been-”
“3 months since you broke up.” Thanatos interrupted. “We know, Minthe.”
“And with some random girl? She’s probably a nymph who got her ears done! He has a real thing fo-”
“Look, why are you stressing about this?” He stifled a yawn. “It’s probably a one time thing. And it’s not like you guys are getting back together. Why bother?”
Minthe went quiet. He was right.
The likelihood of it happening was zero. She made it very clear the last time Hades apologized. Or tried to, anyway. She knew it’d be a mistake.
But this felt worse. The thought of him starting over with a new girl crushed her. Though their relationship was flawed, Minthe felt she was special to him. Someone worthy of expensive gifts and fancy dinners. A person who had value.
Instead, she was another girl to dump money on. Completely disposable.
Minthe grabbed a pack of cigarettes from her kitchen table. She sat on her couch, placing her phone down. “Look, were either of you there last night?”
“Nah, I looked after Hebe all night.”
“And I was working late, so no.”
Minthe sighed, grabbing her black and gold lighter. “Seriously? Someone’s gotta know what her deal is.” She grabbed a cigarette and lit it between her lips.
“Gods, her phone must be blowing up right now.”
Minthe took it in, blowing out smoke. “Thetis, please. She’s probably blabbering on and on about how big her crush is.”
~~~
“I’m telling you, nothing happened.”
“Walking out of a major God’s house isn’t nothing! It’s alot of things!”
Persephone sunk into the white, plush couch as Artemis towered over her. In one hand, she held the newest post from Olympus GOS in front of her. With Persephone’s face on the screen. It was blurred, but recognizable enough. Hestia was seated in a nearby matching chair.
Before Persephone left the Mortal Realm, away from Demeter’s watchful eye, she made a few promises. Heavily encouraged by her mother, but still. Stay out of trouble, stay in the TGOEM, and stay with Artemis 24/7.
And somehow, she managed to break them all in record time.
She crossed her arms, frowning slightly. “So you don’t believe me?”
“It’s not that Persephone,” Hestia chimed in. “We both believe you, but-”
“Everyone else is taking the worst conclusion.” She clicked off her phone and started to pace. “You just got accepted into TGOEM. Do you know how bad this’ll look?”
“Well-”
“Our whole thing is "Setting a good example for goddesses,” and “Keeping up Olympian's image.” Now no one will take us seriously!”
“I-”
“And you’re lucky Hestia talked your mom down. You know this would make her freak! Kore, what were you thinking?”
Persephone sunk deeper, gripping the couch cushions.
It wasn’t fair.
All she did was go to a party and have a few drinks. She didn’t want to wake up in a random being's house. Or be on thousands of tabloids and gossip sites.
Hestia stood up. “Artemis, I’m sure Persephone didn’t mean to-”
“That doesn’t matter! Kore made a commitment, and she needs to keep it.”
Her mother made it for her. It was the only way she’d let Persephone leave.
She didn’t ask for it.
Something grew deep inside her, threatening to emerge.
“Like when you promised,” Persephone stood up, staring down Artemis. “You wouldn’t leave me alone at the Panathenaia?”
“What?” Hestia looked back at Artemis, who froze.
“Oh, so you didn’t mention that?”
“I thought you were right behind me! I spent the rest of the night looking for you, but you were too busy doing-”
“Doing what, Artemis?” Persephone snapped. It grew further, almost reaching the surface.
“GIRLS!”
They both looked back at Hestia. Her deep, furrowed eyebrows and motherly glare sent them silent.
She sighed, touching her forehead. “Artemis, Persephone doesn’t know how Olympus runs. It’s important she gets guidance from us. With no judgment. And Persephone, I know you’re a very kind girl. But not everyone will use that kindness for good. Be careful.”
“More importantly, you two need to be there for each other. You don’t realize how many girls get lost in Olympus. Or hurt. Understand?”
They nodded.
Hestia gave a small smile. “Good. Now I have other matters to attend to. But if you need me, don’t be afraid to call!” She picked up her bag and made her way to the door. “Remember, we have our first official meeting tomorrow. Bye!”
As she shut the door, Artemis and Persephone sat down on the couch. They stayed quiet.
Persephone had barely noticed it but, after a moment, realized how close that was.
Her mother told her to keep an eye on it. Making sure it stayed down and never came up. She thought moving somewhere new would make it go away.
But now, the best she could do was suppress it and stay nice.
“...I’m sorry I threw you under the bus with Hestia.” She looked over to Artemis.
“I’m sorry I left you at the Panathenaia alone. It was really irresponsible of me.” She glanced back. “Are we cool?”
“Of course we are!” Persephone wrapped her into a tight hug. “Roomies shouldn’t stay mad at each other!”
“That’s great!” She said, losing her breath. “Are you always this strong?”
“Oh no, I’m not crushing you aren’t I?” She released her, letting Artemis take a couple breaths. “Guess I don’t know my strength! It’s good for gardening, but bad for people.”
“Before I forget,” Artemis stood up. “Hold on one sec!” She rushed upstairs. After a few minutes, she returned with a golden box tied with a shimmery bow.
“It’s a gift from Hera.” She placed it in Persephone’s lap. “She wanted to give it at the party but… y’know. Anyway, she’d kill me if you didn’t have it.”
“Oooo, it looks so pretty.” She untied the bow and opened the box. With both hands, she pulled out a white fur coat. It was small, almost reaching her midriff, and decorated with bright diamond buttons.
Persephone gave a tight, closed smile. She glanced at Artemis, who shrugged sheepishly.
“This looks nice and….expensive. But it’s really not me.” She examined it closer. “Is it at least faux fur?”
“Oh no, that’s definitely real.”
She immediately dropped it.
“But speaking of clothes, you wanna go shopping today?” Artemis closed up the box. “I’m not into it, but you seriously need to update your wardrobe.”
“I’d love to! I'm sick of chitons and peplos.” She looked off wistfully and smiled. “Finally, I’ll dress like I actually belong! And in something I’ll be comfortable in.”
“…I’m sorry for giving you that dress last night.”
“You’re forgiven~”
~~~
The sun shone brightly as they walked into Olympus’ agora. Crowds of immortal beings populated it, loitering near stores and seating areas. They entered the nearest clothing store.
Persephone’s eyes glimmered as they walked around. Hundreds, no, thousands of options laid at her feet. Her mother picked most of her outfits, but now? She could truly express herself.
Her eyes landed on a nearby mannequin: It wore a white, sleeveless turtleneck with a keyhole at the chest. Paired with a white/pink plaid skirt, fastened with golden buttons. The final touch were white flats with pink tips.
“Oh my gosh Artemis,” she dashed to the outfit. “Isn’t this so cute?”
Artemis stopped, looking it over. She scrunched up her nose. “I mean, objectively? Yes. It does fit your…vibe.”
“I should wear this at my internship! I don’t know where Olympus U will place me, but this’ll make a great impression!”
Artemis walked over and touched the skirt. “I think the skirt and flats will work, but you should pick a different top.”
“What? Why?” Persephone frowned.
“Well, they’ll most likely put you in an office. I heard it’s where most students go. And offices have a professional look or dress code. And that’s…” She scrunched her nose again. “Not professional.”
“But…the window isn’t that big.” She grabbed the top off a rack, closer to her size. She held it against her. “Maybe no one will notice?”
Artemis raised an eyebrow.
“... Ok fine.” Persephone pouted, grabbing the skirt and flats off a nearby stand. “I’ll grab another top. But I’m still getting this one!”
“That’s fine. You need alot of stuff in general. Just make sure to get the basics-”
Ring Ring! Ring Ring!
Artemis stopped, grabbing the items out of Persephone’s arms. She looked through her burlap shoulder bag, embroidered with flowers. Her eyes widened as Persephone pulled out a light pink flip phone.
“Hello, this is Kore!”
“Hello Persephone! You sound well and good.”
O-Oh, hi Hera!” She looked over to Artemis. “Did Artemis give you my number?”
Artemis shook her head as Hera answered. “Oh no, I got that from your mother.”
“Ah! Ok!” Her face strained into a smile.
“I wanted to call in and check on you. You’ve certainly made an impression on everyone!”
“I swear, it’s not like that at all.” She shook her head, as if Hera could see it. “We slept in separate beds and everything!”
“It’s fine, Persephone! As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters. Now, did you like my gift?”
She smiled tighter. “I loved it!”
“Great! Well, I’ll leave you be. But you must come over to help with our garden. It’s been such a mess since I fired our landscaper.”
“Of course! Let me know when!”
“I’ll keep in touch. Having fun getting started at university!”
Hera hung up. Persephone sighed as she closed her phone. “Well, she’s not mad at me. That’s good, right?”
“It’s something.” Artemis eyed the flip phone. “Persephone, why don’t you have a newer phone?”
“My mom said this was newer. And it looked too cute to say no!” She tilted her head. “What does yours look like?”
Artemis pulled out her phone from her back pocket. A slim, modern phone glinted under the store’s lights. “This is what most beings use nowadays. I haven’t seen that in like, a long time.”
“Oh…” She put her phone back in her bag.
“But hey, a phone’s a phone. And it does fit-”
Ping!
Artemis opened her phone. After a second, she rolled her eyes. “Ugh.”
“What? What is it?” Persephone leaned over.
“It’s just my stupid brother and Hermes bugging me. They wanna hang out in a few da-”
“Hermes? No WAY!” She grabbed Artemis’ arm, shaking her slightly. “I haven’t seen him in forever! Say yes say yes say-”
“Fine! I’ll figure something out later.” She put her phone back. “Now, you’ll need more than one outfit, so if you want to stay focused-”
As the two continued shopping, Persephone’s excitement for tomorrow grew. She’d start her first day at university, and get assigned her internship! A place to make new friends, try new things.
A place to fully express herself, without anyone holding her back.
She could finally be Persephone. On her own terms.

“Are you sure you’ll be fine on your own?”
Persephone sighed, slipping on a pair of white sandals. “Yes, Artemis. I know where to go and everything!”
Artemis leaned against the kitchen counter. “Because I’m not working until later. We can walk together, figure out where your classes are-”
“Isn’t that what maps are for?” She picked up a pink, flowery backpack. “And everything here is so modern! If I can find my way back to our temple in the Mortal Realm, this’ll be easy!”
“Or ten times harder.” Artemis said under her breath.
“Look, if I need help I promise I’ll call. Ok?”
Artemis paused, before sighing reluctantly. “Ok…”
Persephone took one final look at herself in the mirror. After much deliberation, she decided a simple but sweet look worked best. A short, breezy white dress with a small, pink bow at the neckline. Pink and white roses adorned her head. She wore a gold plated necklace, strung with small pink flowers.
Persephone looked at her ears and frowned. She’d found the cutest matching earrings, but remembered the obvious. Getting her ears pierced was on the ever growing to-do list she had. Still looked cute!
“Alright, I think I’m ready. See ya later Artemis!” She ran out the front door.
“Ok, and be-”
It slammed shut.
“Careful...”
~~~
While most immortal beings used public transportation, gods and goddesses were blessed with flight. It made traveling much easier, and was their most preferred method.
But in the Mortal Realm, Persephone never had a reason to fly. She liked going on long walks and exploring her surroundings. At least, it’s what her mom mentioned every time she asked.
Didn’t stop her from sneaking off and trying though. The feeling of her lifting from the grass, floating in mid air was hard to resist.
It was the few times she felt truly free.
Flying to Olympus U was easy. Landing was a work in progress, if the scrapes on her knees were an indicator. Still, Persephone kept her spirits high walking on the campus.
Surprisingly, the buildings and scenery reminded her of home. They had modern touches, but the white stone pillars and large stretches of grass were spot on. Beings around her age were scattered all over; most walked in pairs or groups.
Persephone stopped at the nearest map, scratching her head. “Let’s see…My first class is in the communications building. Then after, I go to the science center…”
As she calculated her route, a group of students gathered nearby. She didn’t mind them whispering, until their voices got louder.
“Oh my gods, I swear it’s-"
“Doesn’t matter! Let’s go before she-"
“Look, why don’t we ask?"
“No! Don’t go over-"
“Hey!” A green skinned girl approached her. Locks of snakes slithered on her head as she got closer. “You’re Persephone, right?”
She paused, before welcoming her with a bright smile. “Yep, that’s me! What’s your-”
“Ha! I knew Olympus GOS was a legit source.” She stepped closer, showing off her purple elliptical eyes. “Sooo, are you and Hades a thing?”
She felt it stirring again.
Unbeknownst to both girls, strings of vines and ivy emerged from the ground.
Persephone smiled harder. “Nope! Anyways, What’s your maj-”
“Ohhh, so it’s like a one night stand. That makes sense!” Her voice turned to a whisper. “Was it even good? I mean, he’s like so old-”
“Actually, nothing happened!” She gripped the straps of her backpack.
The vines and ivy crept closer to the girl’s ankles.
“What? That’s impossi-”
“Euryale!”
A teal hand grabbed Euryale’s shoulder, pulling her away from Persephone. The greenery vanished.
“Gods, leave that girl alone!” Her one eye glared down at Euryale. “She’s got better shit to do than answer your dumb questions.”
A choir of hisses erupted from Euryale’s hair. “They aren’t dumb Cy! I just wanna know the truth. It’s basic journalism!”
Cy looked over to Persephone, her tone softening. “I’m so sorry about her. We’ll leave you alone!”
“W-wait! Can I-”
Before Persephone could finish, Cy dragged Euryale over to their group. Who quickly walked off.
“Join you…guys…” She sighed defeatedly.
She really wanted this to work. Ignoring the one girl, that group could’ve been a great start for friends.
While Persephone started her route, her mind wandered further. Sure, she had friends in the Mortal Realm. Most of them were nymphs, and she loved them dearly. They slept under the stars, bathed, and goofed off together.
But it all felt…the same? Nothing challenged her, unless she sought it out herself. Everyday was a beautiful, peaceful paradise.
And paradise got boring after a few thousand years.
So this had to work. She needed it too. And one weird comment wouldn’t ruin her-
“Hey! "
Persephone snapped from her thoughts, turning to the sound. A few students were seated at a table, with one of them standing up.
“Are you the chick who got with Hades?!” They shouted. “What’s your secret?!” Another student nearby hit their arm, frowning.
“I didn’t get with anybody!” She ran off.
“W-Wait!” The farther she ran, the quieter they got. “I wanna land a God tooo…”
~~
Persephone huffed as she entered her first class. Most students were already seated, setting up their computers. Their teacher sat at the front, working on theirs.
While she planned on sitting in the front, her last interactions dampened it. She sat towards the back.
The teacher stepped out from the desk, revealing gray goat legs. They wore black slacks with a wrinkled white blouse. Their gray, stringy hair was pulled into a ponytail. But stray hairs framed their face and curled horns.
“Welcome to Development Of Olympus! My name is Irida Vlahiki, but you’ll call me Professor Irida. My pronouns are They/Them.”
They clicked their computer as a slideshow popped up. “Now, we’ll mainly discuss how Olympus started, and any changes from then to today. I’m sure you’ve heard that story since infancy. But we still need to cover it in depth!”
“For now, let’s start off with an ice breaker! Ask the people near you what their major is, and why.”
The class divulged in various conversations. Persephone felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around.
The student waved, an orange glow emitting from their body. While she wasn’t too close, Persephone could feel the warmth they radiated. They smiled, highlighting the lava cracks that spread on their body. Their hair dripped down to their shoulders, covering their ears. Sans the small lava bun on their head.
“Hey, the name’s Aetna! I’m double majoring in Business and Finances, with a minor in Ceramics. I go by any pronouns! What about you?”
“I’m Persephone! My major’s Horticultural Science because I love plants. And She/Her!”
“No fucking way!”
Suddenly, the student sitting in front of Aetna turned to Persephone. Their leafy, one sided purple bang whipped against their dark purple face. The rest of their head was shaved.
“My major’s Horticultural Therapy! You’re like, the first person to know what that is. I’m Syke, She/They.”
Persephone smiled. “Oh my gosh, that’s great! How’d you-”
“Wait a sec…” They narrowed her dark purple eyes at Persephone. “You look so familiar…”
She grinned harder, suppressing her anxiety. “I guess I have that face!”
“No, that’s not it…” Syke examined further, furrowing her eyebrows. After a moment, they snapped their fingers. “I got it!”
Persephone braced herself…
“You look exactly like that girl. Y’know, on the cereal box!”
Only to stare blankly at them.
She tilted her head. “Huh?”
Syke bawled her fists near their head, imitating buns. “The pink gal on Barley Mother cereal! ‘Cept she had buns in her hair.” They dropped her hands down. “I was obsessed as a kid! I even wore the same hairstyle for like, too long. I was so sad when they took her off.”
She tapped Aetna’s desk. “Aetna, right? Back me up on this.”
They glanced back at Persephone and shrugged. “I guess! I didn’t eat Barley Mother growing up. I’m more of a Seaweed Flakes fan.”
Persephone looked between the two. “So…you think I’m her?”
Syke shook her head. “Nah, you just look alike.”
“Many girls did! They were definitely the initial demographic.” Aetna interjected, propping their head on their arm. “And pink is a youthful, typically feminine color. So their mascot made sense! I guess when other people started buying it, they decided to generalize.”
The actual reason was, at some point growing up, Demeter moved the spotlight away from her. Which meant no more marketing, branding, or using her image. She never knew why, but never dwelt on it.
But more importantly, she found people who didn’t know her at all!
Persephone resumed her bright demeanor. “Anyway, enough about cereal! Are you guys excited about your internships? I’m getting mine today!”
Aetna’s eyes brightened, along with her lava cracks. “Yeah! It’s such a great opportunity for networking. I wanna get one at a big business.”
“I’m whatever, but a private practice would be nice. You?”
Persephone shrugged. “I don’t have a place in mind. But I’ll be happy with wherever they place me!”
~~~
“I’m in the Underworld?!”
The advisor kept his eyes on the computer screen. “Specifically, you’ll be placed at Underworld Corp. It’s a very good opportunity! Not many interns get placed there.”
“But-But-” Persephone squirmed in her seat. “I can’t go there!"
He glanced over. “Why?”
Persephone kept quiet, fiddling with her necklace. Because if she did, no one would shut up about it. She could see the headlines now: “Mysterious Pink Girl Seen At Underworld Corp! Is She Sleeping Her Way To The Top?”
She barely knew Hades. But apparently, everyone else thought they knew better than her. Was the universe playing a cruel joke on her?
The pink and white roses slowly disappeared. In its place, yellow carnations decorated her head.
“I just…can’t.” Persephone’s shoulders went slack.
The advisor leaned in closer. “Look, I know you kids think the Underworld is all doom and gloom. But an open mind can lead to so many experiences! You’re a Horticulture major, correct?”
“Yeah…”
“Well, why don’t you research if the Underworld can grow plants? I’m sure there’s some that thrive in darkness.”
She thought for a moment. That did sound like an interesting project. And just because she was at Underworld Corp, it didn’t mean she’d see Hades. He was a very busy man.
It’s not like he’d have time for her, right?
“You’re right!” Persephone stood up, picking up her backpack. The yellow carnations soon disappeared. “I shouldn’t let one thing upset me. I’m gonna make the best out of this!”
She dashed out of the advisor’s room. “Thanks!”
“No pro-”
She slammed the door.
“Blem.”
Bzzzzz Bzzzzz
The advisor looked over at his phone. His eyebrows immediately raised at the number. He picked it up.
“Hello?” The advisor stayed quiet, looking back at his computer. “Yes, I saw her right now. It’s already been assigned…yes, I eased her mind.”
He continued to listen, until he cleared his throat. “But um, surely there’s another place she could go. Based on her resume, an office isn’t-”
His lips tightened as they cut him off. “I didn’t mean any offen-”
He drew his eyebrows together. “No, of course I’m not questioning your-”
The advisor went silent, his lips staying tight. He sighed. “...My deepest apologies. It won’t happen again.”
He set his phone down, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Gaia, give me strength.”

Chapter 3: The New Intern
Summary:
A new intern starts at Underworld Corp. Can Minthe keep her cool? At least, for longer than five seconds?
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Minthe grumbled as she and Thanatos stood near the back. A few other employees crowded the small boardroom. Meetings for their floor weren’t a rarity. But most, per Hades’ request, were short and to the point.
And while this was, the subject got under her skin.
“Everyone, I’d like to introduce our newest intern." Hades gestured to the young, pink woman next to him. “Her name’s Persephone.”
“Uh, hi! I’m excited to be here!” She smiled nervously.
“Isn’t that…” Thanatos leaned over and whispered. “The same girl who-?”
“Yep.”
The two kept whispering while Hades talked further. “How’d she even get here? Interns don’t make it to our floor. They’re placed anywhere else.”
“Thanatos, you know why she’s here. Don’t play dumb.”
He groaned, rubbing his eyes. “Gods, she’s never getting anything done, is she?”
“Nope.” She narrowed her eyes on Persephone.
This was it.
Starting today, Minthe had front row seats to their relationship. Forced to see them sneak off, flirt around the office without a care in the world. The exact same things he did with her.
And could do nothing about it.
Minthe frowned as she eyed Persephone. She wore a white sweater, the loudest pair of pink slacks Minthe ever saw, with plain white flats. From the looks of it, she’d been effectively replaced by a sweeter, younger girl. Someone who’d smile and nod to whatever he’d-
Suddenly, Persephone caught her eye.
She kept her deep glare.
Persephone’s eyes widened briefly. A light brush crossed her face as she gave a small wave.
Minthe scoffed and looked away.
Soon, the meeting ended. As she and Thanatos left the boardroom, Hades approached them with Persephone.
“Thanatos, you’ll be showing Persephone around.” Hades kept his gaze on him, ignoring Minthe. “Give her a tour and explain how things run.”
“A tour?” Thanatos raised an eyebrow. “We’ve never done that for interns.”
“Then we’re starting now.
“Why can’t Hecate do it? Or you?”
“Unfortunately, we’re both too busy right now.”
“But I’m busy. There’s souls I need to process, and I’m already backed up-”
“Well, it won’t take long. I’m sure you’ll manage like always.” Hades gave a small smile to Persephone, then walked off.
For a moment, Thanatos fumed silently. He looked down at Persephone.
She smiled, brushing hair out of her face. “Sooo, Thanatos! How long have you been-”
Without a word, he grabbed Minthe and dragged them back to the boardroom. He shut the door and groaned.
“Look, I can’t deal with…” He pointed to the door. “Her right now. Could you-”
“No.”
“Minthe, please-”
“What do you want me to say?” She snapped. “Sure, I’ll show her around! And after, I’ll give her my job since she’s already taking my life and fucking my ex. Is that right?”
He sighed, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You know I don’t like this or him, but I gotta do my job. Help me out, please?"
She pressed her lips together. Thanatos never asked much from her. Even though she constantly asked stuff from him. Like when he took care of her after the breakup. Or when he helped her move out of her (more of Hades’) old apartment, on short notice.
Strangely enough, Thanatos never took issue with it. She figured he’d use it against her and was biding his time. But for now, that never came.
She should at least try to make it up.
“Fine. I’ll do it.”
His face lit up. “Thank you! I’ll make it up to you later.” Thanatos raced out the door.
She readied herself, pinching the bridge of her nose. Then, she slowly walked out the boardroom.
Minthe glanced over at Persephone. She jumped up briefly, then smiled. “Oh hi! I guess you’re training me? What’s your-”
“Let’s hurry this up.”
She stomped off, with Persephone trailing behind.
~~
“...And if you look through the window, you’ll see the Towers 2, 3, and 4.”
Persephone walked closer to the glass window wall. Three, looming towers shadowed the darkened sky. With spots of blue peaking out; presumably from lit office spaces.
Minthe followed, pointing to each tower. “Tower 2 is for IT and running our servers. Tower 3 is for the Fates, who manage destinies. And Tower 4 is where Tartarus is.”
She looked back. “Don’t go there.”
“Ok…but why-?”
Minthe started to walk away. “Just don’t. Alright?”
“Ok!” She stammered, following her.
Minthe kept her gaze forward. She strode along quickly, forcing Persephone to pick up the pace. If she had to do this, it’d better be fast and easy.
Since Persephone was in Tower 1, it was unlikely she’d ventured to the other three. So touring those in depth didn’t make sense. And they already saw the Library, which didn’t have much going on.
Besides, he’d show her around. In more ways than one.
Minthe’s eyebrows crinkled as the thought crossed her mind. She glanced down at Persephone.
Who, unbeknownst to Minthe, was staring at her.
“What?” She said curtly.
“N-nothing! It’s just…” Persephone tugged slightly at her ears. “Your earrings. They look really pretty!”
Minthe paused, slowing down a little. She touched the golden, dangly earrings on her fins. “Um, thanks.”
“Did it hurt?”
“Not particularly. After the second, it wasn’t so bad.”
“Cool!” Persephone smiled brightly. “I wanna get mine pierced too. But I don’t think I can handle four like you. It seems really tough!”
“Hm.” Minthe continued to look forward.
Persephone looked back at her. “So uh, what’s your name?”
“Minthe.”
“That sounds nice! Does anyone call you Minty-”
“No.”
A moment of silence passed while they walked together. Persephone looked back again. “You’re a river nymph right?”
Minthe scoffed. “Isn’t it obvious?”
“I don’t like to assume! Do you use your powers often?”
“Not really. Who needs healing through water when hospitals exist? Besides, they aren’t as strong.” She side eyed her. “Thanks for reminding me.”
Persephone stuttered, fidgeting with her hands. “I’m sorry, I was curious! At home, I’m around nymphs alot and-”
“Wait.” Minthe stopped. She stared at her. “You’re not a nymph?”
“Nope, I’m a goddess. But just a minor one! It’s not a big deal, right?”
Minthe’s stomach dropped.
Not only did he replace her with a sweet, young girl. He replaced her with a sweet, young goddess.
What. The Actual. Fuck.
“…Minthe?”
Why? Why her? Hadn’t she been humiliated enough?
“Hello…?”
Was life playing a cruel trick? Did he, after years of wasted time and money, finally listen to everyone else? “Why do you put up with that nymph girl? She’s barely fit to be queen. But a goddess?”
And sure, whenever she’d mentioned it, he’d shrug it off. “I barely pay it any mind. And you shouldn’t either. You trust me, right?”
And she did. She stupidly-
Suddenly, she felt a tap on her arm.
“Minthe? Could you…not tell anyone?”
“Huh?” She focused back on Persephone.
“I’d rather keep it private. I don’t want people treating me differently, y’know?”
She stared again, before bursting out laughing. “Like that hasn’t happened already?”
“What do you-?”
“Interns don’t get big introductions. They also don’t get placed near Hades. I suppose you’re a special case.”
Persephone paused. She fidgeted again. “Well…maybe I’m the only one here! It makes sense to do it if there’s only one, right?” Her tone stayed assured, with a tinge of doubt.
She rolled her eyes. “If that’s what you think, then fine. Now, let’s keep it moving-”
After showing her the gym and pool area, Minthe figured that was enough. She walked Persephone back to their offices and her desk.
It was standard: a computer, some office supplies, and a bundle of red scrolls. Persephone sat down.
“Now all you’re doing is recording what’s on those,” she pointed at the scrolls. “Onto the computer. We like to have digital and physical copies for reference. It’s painfully simple.”
Persephone bit her lip as she stared at the screen. “Um…”
“If you have any questions, don’t ask me.” She took a few steps away.
“W-wait!”
She turned around sharply. “What?”
“I don’t…” Persephone chuckled nervously. “I don’t know how to use a computer?”
Minthe blinked a few times. “You’ve…you’ve never-”
She shook her head. “You’re joking.”
“I’m not, honest!” She gestured at it. “We don’t have these where I’m from and-”
“Oh my gods, where are you from? The last century?” Minthe put her hands in front of her. “Actually, don’t answer! Figure this out yourself.”
Before Persephone could object, Minthe walked away.
This was above her pay grade. If Little Miss Goddess floundered at her job, why should she care? If anything, he’d do it for her…
Or give the work to someone else.
Minthe stopped.
Or she’d cry and whine to Hades about how “Mean old Minthe is ruining my internship! I feel so alone and un-welcomed here!”
“Why don’t you have her relocated, Hades?”
“Shit.” Minthe muttered under her breath.
She marched back over to Persephone’s desk. Minthe would do anything, then give that goddess power over her.
~~~
Growing up, there was one word which plagued Persephone’s life. A word that stuck to her like goosegrass to clothes.
Cute.
Plenty of people called her cute. Her mother, for example. Which felt less genuine to her, and more of an obligation. She was her mama. It’s what they did. At least she’d spice it up with “pretty,” sometimes.
The nymphs did, young and old. And she appreciated it! But after awhile, it lost meaning.
The occasional villager tried (before her mother shooed them off), and even then it didn’t get her.
Persephone didn’t want to sound ungrateful. But for once, couldn’t someone call her “beautiful?” “Mature?” She’d even take “sexy” (from the right person).
Until today, she didn’t know what it looked like.
And then she saw her.
Shining, red eyes that pierced right through her. A statuesque figure, draped with glistening burgundy hair. A rich, velvety voice with a commanding tone.
That’s what it was. Minthe was all of it, wrapped in black heels and golden earrings.
So of course, Persephone had questions. Was she always like this? Or did it take years of effort? Was she proud? Did her friends appreciate it? A potential partner? Did wearing heels that high hurt?
For now, her questions went unanswered. But since Persephone got her number, (under the guise texting for help was easier than asking) maybe she’d get a few. Any information was-
“Kore!”
Persephone jumped out of her thoughts. Artemis glared at her, while Hestia and Athena eyed her carefully. They were all seated in the living room, at Artemis’ house.
“I was listening! Promise!”
Athena picked up a few papers. “It’s alright! We just wanted to hear your opinion.”
“Um…” Persephone scratched her head. “On what, exactly?”
Artemis sighed. “We’re hosting a volunteering event in a few days. Nothing major. We’ll be giving out food to a local community.”
Persephone’s eyes lit up. “Oh! My mama does that for nearby villages. She and the others bring produce if they’re really struggling.” She rested her cheek on her hand. “I wasn’t allowed to go, so it’ll be nice to do it myself!”
“That’s great!” Hestia smiled. “Besides us, we have other volunteers to-”
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK
Their heads turned to the door.
“Artemis, were you expecting anyone?” Hestia asked.
“No…” Artemis walked to the front door. As she opened it, a small gasp rang out.
“Demeter! It’s so…nice to see you!”
Persephone tensed up. She sunk deeper into the couch.
“Same to you, Artemis.” Demeter walked in quickly, catching Athena and Hestia’s gaze. She grinned. “Oh, hello! I didn’t mean to interrupt the meeting.”
Athena shook her head. “Not at all! We were finishing up.”
“Great!” Demeter looked over to the couch. “Kore, dear? I know you’re hiding there~” She said in a sing-songy tone.
Reluctantly, she peaked up from the couch. “Hi Mama…”
“I know I promised to give you space before checking in,” Demeter crossed her arms. “But I think there’s something we need to talk about. Over dinner?”
Persephone shifted in her seat.
“Demeter,” Hestia started. “We’ve already discussed it, and I think she understands-”
“Thank you Hestia, but I want to hear it from her.”
Artemis ran to Demeter’s side. “Is it alright if I come? I didn’t have much planned tonight and-”
“Of course!” She smiled, putting her hand on Artemis’ shoulder. “I was just about to ask you.”
Artemis gave a small, nervous smile. She glanced back at Persephone, who sank deeper into the couch.
~~~
The Mediterranean restaurant was darkly lit, save for the candles on the tables. They were seated in a separate area, away from prying eyes. Various bushes and shrubbery decorated the restaurant. Their leaves lightly touched the back of Persephone’s neck.
She looked down at the table, while Demeter talked with the waiter.
“So you’re getting the Briam, the Souvlaki with a side of fries, a Greek Salad, and Dolmades as the appetizer?’
“Actually, I asked for Spanakopita.” Demeter gestured to Persephone. “She’s vegan, after all.”
“Oh my bad!”
“It’s fine!” Demeter smiled. “You guys are pretty busy tonight. Must be alot to manage.”
The waiter sighed as they wrote it down. “Ugh, it really is. But I’ll be back with your food soon!”
They walked off as Demeter turned to both of them. Artemis straightened her back.
“Now,” Demeter leaned forward in her chair. “Do either of you want to start? Or should I?”
After a pause, Artemis cleared her throat. “I know this looks bad, but it’s a misunderstanding. Kore told me nothing happened, right?” She glanced back at her.
Persephone looked up and nodded. “We didn’t do anything! I just stayed overnight and left in the morning.”
“But how did you even get there? Artemis, weren’t you looking out for her?”
“I was, but-”
“And you took her to Zeus’ Panathenaia?” Demeter sighed, touching her forehead. “When I agreed to Kore staying, you promised to keep her safe. And now, she’s all over the tabloids.”
Artemis’ shoulders slumped slightly, her eyebrows furrowed. “I know, and I’m sorry. I intend to keep my promise. It won’t happen again.”
Persephone watched her. She frowned, before looking back to her mother. “Mama, it’s really not her fault! I’m the one who broke off and ended up there.”
“And how did that happen?”
“I…” She paused. Persephone lowered her head, squeezing her hands. “I don’t…remember.”
“You don’t-” Demeter’s eyes widened, along with Artemis’. She leaned in closer. “What do you mean, you don’t remember?"
“Look, can we talk about it later?”
Demeter stared at Persephone, her face wrinkled with concern. After a moment, it softened. “Ok, Little Bean.”
She gave Artemis a sharp glance. “Please, don’t let this happen again.”
“Yes Demeter, I-”
Suddenly, her phone rang, Artemis stood up, pointing to the restrooms. “I’m sorry, can I-?”
Demeter nodded, and she quickly walked off. The table was silent, until Persephone looked up.
“Mama? I think…you were too hard on Artemis. She’s trying her best, and has really helped me out. She means well.”
Demeter sighed. “Kore, I know. But sometimes, meaning well isn’t enough. I expect her to keep you out of harm's way.”
Persephone squinted. “But…can’t I do that myself?”
Demeter eyed her confusingly, before smiling. “Little Bean, those things take time. And you’re only starting out. It’s always good to have help.”
“Ok, but…shouldn’t I learn to protect myself?” Persephone drew her eyebrows together. “Artemis can’t be around 24/7, and you’re busy so-”
“I’m never too busy for you, sweetie! I’ll always make sure you’re taken care of. Like back at home!”
The bushes behind Persephone trembled.
“Yeah, but-”
Demeter continued. “I know it’s hard, being in a new place without your community. And there’s alot of things you don’t know. I know you have trouble doing things on your own.”
The bushes shook harder, as something stirred inside her again. She bit her lip.
“You’re so used to having me around, I just want to-”
“I can do it on my own.” Persephone mumbled.
“What was that, Little Bean?”
“I said, I can do it on my own!” She slammed her fists down.
The bushes burst, releasing thorns and vines. The vines leapt out, covering the back of her seat. Mixed in were petunias; deep reds layered within green. Some formed on her head, creating a crown.
Demeter covered her mouth as her eyes widened again. Persephone’s face went from anger to shock. She looked behind her and gasped.
“Oh no. Oh nonono, I didn’t-” Immediately, the vines retreated into the bushes. The petunias on her head wilted, their petals falling on the table. She brushed them off. “I didn’t mean to Mama! I promise I-”
“Kore.”
Persephone looked back to her mother’s solemn face. She sat down.
“Is this-” Demeter gestured to the bushes. “Is this the first time you’ve felt it? Since…” She wrinkled her brow, letting her sentence die off.
Persephone lowered her head. She knew it wasn’t the first. It was the third. But the first time plants came out since that. To her knowledge, anyway.
But she didn’t want to tell her. She couldn’t. It took everything, plus a disaster, to get her out.
And it’d take even less to send her back.
“Yes, Mama.” She placed her hands on the table.
“Oh thank Gaia.” Demeter sighed, leaning back in her chair. She took a moment to collect herself.
“Kore, I understand it’s hard. But you have to keep your… stronger emotions at bay. It’s for your own good.”
She nodded. Silence passed over the table.
“You know I don’t trust them.”
“I know.”
“Especially him. He may seem nice, but-” Demeter stopped herself. “I don’t want him anywhere near you, ok?”
“I’ll try.”
Demeter gazed at Persephone. She reached over and held her hand. “I only do this because I care, Kore. Your safety is my top priority. I love you so much, dear.”
She nodded again, giving a small smile. “It’s ok, Mama. I love you too.”
Demeter paused, before reaching into her bag. “There’s something I want to give you.” She pulled out a small, white box. “A reminder of everyone at home.” She placed it in front of her.
Persephone opened it. It was a shimmery brooch, shaped like a tree branch. She gave a genuine grin. “Awww, I love it! I’ll definitely wear it!”
“Uggggh, I’m sorry that took forever.” Artemis walked to their table. “Work’s been taking up all my time. Did I miss anything?”
Demeter smiled at Artemis, waving a hand in Persephone’s direction. “Oh don’t worry, Artemis! You didn’t miss a thing.”
Persephone turned. With little effort, the bushes were back to normal. She frowned briefly.
No matter where she was, it felt like her mother would always fix her mistakes.
Even if she didn’t want her to.

Chapter Text
“Alright, that’s it for today!”
The yoga instructor clapped her hands, while the attendees started packing. She smiled, highlighting her light blue marks.
“Thank you for sharing practice with me! I hope you all feel appreciated in the upcoming days. And remember, the goodness in me salutes the goodness in you.”
Minthe gagged as she rolled up her mat. Thetis shot her a look.
As the two walked out of the studio, she let out a groan. “Thetis, why are we still doing this?”
“Doing what?” She smiled.
“Going to her. I can’t stand that hippy dippy bullshit, and I know you-”
“Minthe, Minthe, Minthe,” she pulled her into a side hug. “Can’t you be positive? I am, and look where that's gotten me. I have a amazing job-”
“Working for the two people I hate the most-”
“I’ve been working with them since before you were born. Listen to your older, wiser friend.”
Minthe scoffed. “You’re only older by 300 years.”
“Yeah, but I didn’t go through puberty like some people- ”
“Fine then. If you’re so old and wise, then why are you yoga buddies with me, instead of ‘Our Majesty?’ ” She fluttered her eyelashes sarcastically.
“Because we’re friends. And Hera’s too busy for yoga. I’d know, I handle her books and everything.”
“Sure.”
Thetis looked back, furrowing her eyebrows slightly. “Minthe, maybe if you were more understanding, you’d have a better worldview. Everyone’s not your enemy.”
She had a point. Minthe was far from understanding.
And because of it, she flushed down a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Like everything in her life, it all came crashing down.
Besides, if Thetis knew how much she fumbled, she’d never hear the end of it.
“On a lighter note, any updates on the pink nymph?”
A scowl formed on Minthe’s face. “She’s a goddess, actually.”
It was Thetis’ turn to stare wide eyed. She laughed uncomfortably. “Oh my Gods, he’s serious! I thought he was using her as a rebound. But a goddess? That’s-”
She paused, looking back at Minthe. “Wait, how’d you-”
“She told me herself. She’s interning at our office.” Minthe looked off to the side.
Thetis kept staring. She placed her hand on Minthe’s shoulder. “Oh no…y’know what that means, right?”
“Vaguely.”
“It’s only a matter of time until…” She trailed off. A moment of silence passed between them. “Have you…lined anything up?”
Minthe sighed. “No, not yet.”
“Well you should! I mean, we all know you’re great at your job. But he’s not gonna keep an ex as his PA.”
“Uh huh.”
“Especially when he’s got a goddess. Even if she sucks at the job, it’s gonna look good for them. But hey, it is what it is! Nothing we can do about it.”
“Mm hm.”
Thetis eyed Minthe, who continued to look away. She frowned slightly. “If you’re lucky, maybe they’ll relocate you. Or you’ll find another office. Or…you could go back to your old job.”
Minthe pursed her lips.
Throughout her life, she went through a variety of jobs. But they all had one, determining factor: her appearance.
She looked good. And she knew it too.
So, why not use it to her advantage?
And sure, it was awkward at first. All the time, actually. But Minthe learned to ignore the deep well of anxiety in her stomach. Or cover it up enough.
And sometimes, the clientele were…less than favorable. More often than not. Especially at her last job.
If they were going to ogle, couldn’t they be subtle?
And every month, she was behind on rent. In a place not worth the money, with a landlord always up her ass. Constantly scrimping on her looks and luck.
She hated it.
But it was the only thing she could do. It’s not like another office would hire her.
And Hades gave her the job because of their relationship. She didn’t earn it.
Minthe let out an exhausted sigh. “I’ll figure it out.” She looked back at Thetis, then at the upcoming coffee shop. “C’mon, let’s get coffee before we’re both late for work.”
“For sure! By the way, Hebe did the cutest thing the other day…”
~~~
Minthe sighed as she typed on her computer. Despite the ‘open space’ layout for their office, her desk was farther away from everyone else’s. Placed outside of Hades, who was one of the few who got a closed off, private office.
Surprisingly, her day was going smoothly. No sudden workloads, no last minute meetings. Nothing out of the-
“Minthe?”
She stopped. Her hands froze, hovering about her keyboard. She looked above her computer screen, but not directly in his eyes.
“Yes, Hades?”
“I’ll be going out for a bit. I want to look at the schedules for the upcoming quarter, when I come back. Could you-”
“Got it.” She looked down and continued typing.
For a moment, Hades didn’t move. After letting out a sigh, he walked off.
Instantly, Thetis’ words circled her psyche. Somehow, her and Hades figured out how to function around the office. They just didn’t speak to each other. And when they did, it was only about work.
Everything became professional. By the books.
And very, very cold.
But it was a matter of time until that stopped working. They couldn’t do this for eternity, right?
Bzzzz Bzzzz!
Minthe’s eyes darted to her phone.
Text Message from: Little Miss Goddess:
uhhh minthe i have a quick question about the computer???
She groaned, rolling her eyes. Minthe grabbed her phone.
You:
What is it?
Little Miss Goddess:
so if i wanna save a document in another place what should i do?
You:
When you save it, it’ll ask you where. Several options will pop up
Minthe put the phone down and got back to typing. But after a few minutes-
Bzzzz Bzzzz!
Her lips tightened at the phone. She looked again:
Little Miss Goddess:
another question but is the drive a physical drive or an internet thing?
For a solid minute, Minthe stared at the text message.
Nobody was this clueless. It was physically impossible.
She must be playing dumb.
You:
You’re kidding, right?
It’s a digital drive we use for all company documents
She stopped, only to start again:
Also why are you typing like that?
A couple minutes passed as Minthe waited, her heel tapping lightly.
Little Miss Goddess:
i promise im not im just very very bad with this stuff
and its hard to do grammar on my phone it takes awhile to type
but my friend taught me emoticons for fun :)
You:
What…what kind of phone do you have?
Little Miss Goddess:
YOU THOUGHT I WAS HOW OLD
I’M 3,000
Little Miss Goddess:
you are? wow! :O
cant believe were only 500 years apart!
you just look so mature and pretty
i assumed you were older
Her eyes widened at the third message.
She took a calming breath, recollecting herself. She started responding, until-
“Persephone?”
Minthe froze again. Her fins perked up as she listened. The office was quiet enough so she could hear, despite them being a good distance away.
“Oh! Hello…sir?”
She heard him chuckle. “Hades is fine. I was wondering if you’d like to accompany me around the Underworld. I think taking you there will be beneficial. For your internship, of course.”
Her grip on her phone loosened.
“But…I still have alot of work to-”
“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’m sure someone will get to it, in time. Now do you…?”
“Well, I…I guess it wouldn’t hurt…”
With a loud thud, her phone dropped to the desk.
She wanted to feel angry. To feel the ichor rush through her veins, to scream as loud as she could. To go into his office and break everything in sight. That was easy.
But instead, a profound sadness threatened to break through. Like a dam that was barely holding on.
Minthe covered her face as her eyes watered. She steadied herself, taking a few more breaths.
Suddenly, another figure appeared in front of her. Minthe jumped, placing her hands on her desk.
“I swear to Gaia,” Thanatos groaned. “This is driving me insane! What’s going-”
He looked back at Minthe. He drew his eyebrows together, his tone flying to concern. “You okay?”
“I’m fine. Just stupid shit with work… You seem worked up though.”
He sat on her desk and sighed. “You know I’ve been backed up with souls, right?”
“Yeah…?”
“Well I checked today, and guess what? It doubled! Out of nowhere! ” He rubbed his face. “If I don’t get a handle on this, he’s gonna be on my back.”
Minthe leaned back in her chair. “Damn, that bad huh? Why not ask your crush for help?” She smirked.
Thanatos shot her a glare. “I told you, I don’t like him. Besides, Hermes has enough on his plate.” He hopped off the desk. “But there’s a report coming in soon. It covers the last few week’s souls. I should find an answer there.”
He peered into Hades’ office. Thanatos looked back at Minthe. “Where did he…?”
Her eyes doubled in size, becoming puppy-dog-like. She gave a sickeningly sweet smile.
Thanatos groaned again, covering his face. “Oh for fuck’s sake- ”
~~
Persephone floated down in front of Artemis’ house. She let out a big yawn and stretched. “Ugh, why am I so tired? I barely did any work today, thanks to-”
She paused as guilt started to set in. Persephone knew it wasn’t a good idea. Going with him. If her mother found out, she’d-
She swallowed, stopping her train of thought. As she walked towards the front door, she noticed the car in the driveway. A shiny white one, with freckles of gold sprinkled in.
Persephone eyed it curiously, before walking through the front door.
“Get. Out. ”
Her eyes widened as Artemis’ voice carried through the house. Slowly, she peeked into the living room.
Artemis didn’t notice her. She was too busy glaring at the guy in front of her. He was tall, almost towering over her. And from the looks of it, contrasted her completely.
His pale white skin spotlighted him, overshadowing Artemis’ charcoal gray skin. While her long black hair casted down her back, his layered light gray hair fanned out at his shoulders. And compared to his baggy yet stylish outfit, littered with gold accessories, her tank and leggings looked painfully simple.
He sucked his teeth, squinting down at her. His black sclera highlighted his gray eyes. “C’mon Arty, it’s not a big deal.”
“Yes it is, and don’t call me that!” Artemis pinched the edge of her brow. “You can’t just drop in whenever you want anymore! What if Kore was here?”
“Then we could all hang together. I’m sure she’d love to-”
“No.” Artemis jabbed a finger into his chest, forcing him back. “I want you far away from-”
Another figure stepped between them. From his wild red hair and kind eyes, Persephone clocked him immediately. “ Orrr, we could ask Kore when she gets here. I’m sure she’d-”
“Oh my GOSH! ” Persephone jumped out, her eyes sparkling. “Hermes! ”
The two guys focused on her, while Artemis’ stayed on Apollo. Hermes broke into a big smile, rushing over to her. “Kore!”
They wrapped themselves into a big hug. Hermes lifted her up from the ground. “It’s been so long! How’ve ya been?”
“Good! It’s been a little bumpy, but I’m glad I’m finally up here!” Persephone glanced over to the other boy. On closer inspection, his gray eyes had light specks of gold.
She smiled at him. “Hi!”
As Hermes put Persephone down, Artemis gestured to Apollo. “Kore…this is my brother, Apollo. Apollo, this is…?” She looked back at Persephone.
“Oh! Persephone’s fine.” She put out her hand. “It’s nice to meet you!”
Apollo eyed her for a moment. Then he smiled, shaking her hand. “ Hey~”
Immediately, Artemis’ hand flew to the back of his head. His face twisted in pain, grabbing it. “OW! What the- ”
“Try. Again.” She said through gritted teeth.
Apollo rolled his eyes, before looking back at Persephone. “You’re gonna teach her to chill, right? ‘Cause she really needs-”
“ANYWAY,” Artemis started pushing both guys towards the door. “They were just about to leave. Don’t get too attached to-”
“Wait nooo, why?” Persephone frowned.
“Because there’s no men allowed in my house.”
“What? We’ve been here dozens of times,” Apollo looked behind at her. “Since when-”
Artemis glared. Her eyes darted to Persephone, then back to him.
He groaned. “Come on, we don’t bite.” Apollo whispered.
“I know Hermes doesn’t, but you do. ” She pushed again.
“Artemis, can’t they stay a little while?” Persephone came closer to her. “It’s been so long since me and Hermes hung out! It’ll be fun!”
“Kore, I can’t-” Artemis sighed, drawing her eyebrows together. “What about your mom? If she finds out-”
“If we stay inside, no one will know! We can do a movie night and everything.” Her eyes grew wide as she pouted. “Pleeeease?”
Artemis’ face scrunched up. The two stared at each other.
After a minute, Artemis sighed again.
She dropped her arms. “Fine.”
“Yay!” Persephone enveloped her into a hug. “Thank you so much, Arty!”
“Don’t call me that!”
~~
Persephone yawned as the credits rolled. “Wow, that was so good! But…I think the screen is bugging my eyes.” She rubbed them gently.
Artemis got up, shutting the TV off. “I think that’s our cue to stop for tonight.”
“Noooo-”
“Kore, I have work in the morning. And you have school, remember?”
Hermes stifled a yawn. “And I gotta get up early for deliveries. Ugh, waking up is gonna suck.” He frowned, dropping his head.
“Oh my Gaia, you two sound ancient.” Apollo scoffed. “What are you, 5,000 or something? It’s not even late.”
Artemis yanked him off the couch. “Then do something on your own, Golden Boy. You’re already over welcomed your stay.”
“Wait! I have a great idea!” Persephone smiled. “You guys should stay over! We could-”
“Out of the question.” Artemis furrowed her eyebrows at Persephone.
Hey eyes grew wide again. “But Artemis, it’ll be fun! I don’t see why-”
Artemis pointed one finger up. “1) We all have work tomorrow.”
She pointed up another. “2) Your Mom. Would. Freak. I don’t want another ‘dinner incident’ again!”
Persephone’s eyes stayed wide, slightly frowning. Finally, she looked down and sighed. “You’re right…” She put her hands in her lap.
Hermes looked over at her. He patted her shoulder, pulling her towards him. “Aww, it’s ok Kore. We can always hang out later. We’ll have more time now!”
“Yeah…” After a moment, her mood picked back up. “Yeah! Now we don’t have to sneak around the mountains to talk.”
The two goddesses escorted them towards the door. Persephone opened it, smiling bright. “It was nice seeing you, Hermes! And I’m glad I met you, Apollo!”
Hermes ruffled her short hair. “You too! Artemis has my number, if you wanna text me.” He walked through the door.
Apollo did the same, nodding at her. “Same. I hope we get to know each other more.” He returned her smile, equally bright.
Before Persephone could respond, Artemis slammed the door.
She gasped. “Arty! That’s so rude!”
Artemis gave her a dirty look. “Don’t call me that. And he’s my brother. It’s my duty to be rude to him.” She started walking upstairs. “You’d understand, if you had siblings.”
Persephone pouted, following her up. “Some of the nymphs are like siblings to me! And I never act like that!”
“C’mon Kore, you’ve never been rude to someone? Just a little bit nasty?”
“No! I-”
“P-please stop! I'm begging you!"
Her footing stumbled.
"Kill me, j-just don’t hurt anyone else."
She quickly grabbed the wooden railing, slamming herself into it.
“Kore?” Artemis turned around. “Are you-?”
“I-I’m fine!” Persephone took in a breath. She looked up and smiled.
“Nothing to worry about.”
Chapter 5: Dumb Village Girl
Summary:
Persephone has high hopes for a new day at Olympus U. Let’s see how it goes!
Chapter Text
As Persephone landed at Olympus U (more gracefully than last time), she let out a groan. “Ugh, how did I sleep in? I thought my alarm was on. Good thing Artemis woke me up…”
Her mind went back to the Mortal Realm, sleeping through dozens of wake up calls. Until her mama woke her up.
She started to frown. The more things change…
Persephone shook her head, dashing the thought away. She picked up her face and set off to class.
While her walk was quiet, she soon came upon an active part of campus. Despite it being early, groups of students populated the area. Some chatted around a coffee shop, with others crowding walkways.
But the more Persephone walked, the stranger she felt. She had been on campus a few times, in the past couple weeks. And she’d hoped things would’ve died down.
And from the eyes burning deep into her backpack, it hadn’t happened yet.
Despite it all, she kept a bright smile on her face. This wasn’t going to ruin her day.
Her eyes drifted to a nearby bulletin board of posters. Filled with extracurricular activities and clubs, her eyes sparkled at the endless possibilities. She walked closer to it.
Acapella could be fun, but she wasn’t much of a singer…making Pottery was more hands on, which she always liked…and she did Tennis before, but that was decades ago-
From the corner of her eye, she caught onto a poster. Odd. It looked like-
“Oh my gosh, Persephone! You remember me?”
The figure grabbed her shoulder, forcing Persephone to turn around. From her purple eyes and snake hair, she knew exactly who it was.
She smiled brighter, ignoring the deep pit forming in her stomach. “Uhhhh yeah! It’s Euryale, right?”
Euryale smiled. “You got it! Listen, I think we got off on the wrong foot.” She twisted one of her snakes around her finger. “I came off like, super stalker-ish. Water under the bridge?”
Persephone started to relax. “Sure! No biggie.”
“Great!” Euryale leaned in, closer than Persephone liked. “You have a morning class? I got stuck with a morning slot for a stupid bio-chem class.”
She resisted the urge to argue, that a Bio-Chem class sounded amazing. Or to frown at Euryale’s obvious distaste.
Instead, Persephone focused on herself. “Yeah, my Vegetable Gardening class only had morning slots. It sucks, but at least it’s only on Wednesdays.”
“So your classes are Monday/Wednesday/Fridays?”
“Yep!”
“Cool! Do you live on campus? I do, and it’s so easy to get up and go.”
Persephone shook her head. “I commute! Staying with a friend.”
“Ok ok…” Euryale paused, letting hissing fill the silence. “So…could you do me a favor? It’d mean alot to me.”
“Of course! Lay it on me.”
“Well…I got my internship a couple days ago. It’s at Olympus GOS -”
Persephone’s heart sank.
“And for some reason, I’m stuck getting coffee instead of doing actual journalism. Buuut, if I bring in a story, they’d have to give me work!”
She felt the deep pit double in size.
“And like, no one knows your POV! They’re going off chepo, flashy headlines. Wouldn’t it be nice to tell your side? Clear up those nasty rumors?”
Persephone bit her lip, her grip tightening on her backpack straps. She didn’t want to tell her story. She didn’t want people to know anything about her.
Unknowingly, strings of ivy and vine appeared around their feet.
Why couldn’t they leave her alone?
She shook her head. “Not really…I don’t pay attention to that stuff.”
Euryale’s eyes widened. “Seriously? But it’s so easy to look up! You-”
“Thanks for the talk,” Persephone started to pull away. “But I gotta go to class! See you-”
“W-wait!”
Euryale grabbed Persephone’s arm, yanking her back. Both their eyes went wide, but Euyale’s became watery. “I promise, this’ll be a one time thing! If you just listen to-”
Something in Persephone snapped.
She pulled her arm back and broke into a sprint. Euryale tried to follow, but immediately fell to the ground. As she lifted her head, she saw a blip of Persephone in the distance.
Euryale groaned. “Great, there goes my big break. Why couldn’t she-”
One of her snakes jabbed her cheek. She glared, only to follow them pointing behind her.
Thick vines wrapped around Euryale’s ankles. They broke through the marble sidewalk, spreading crumbles of rocks.
She tilted her head, eyes filled with intrigue. “... Huh. ”
~~~
It didn’t matter how many people Persephone bumped into.
It didn’t matter how many stares she got.
She wanted to be gone. To completely and utterly disappear.
But hiding in the bathroom would have to do.
Persephone kept her head low, rushing towards the sinks. She splashed her face, feeling the cold water on her fingers. Again, she drifted to the Mortal Realm. To the gentle springs she’d relax in with the nymphs. It all felt so far away…
After drying off her face, she looked at the mirror.
And saw it.
Spread out on the mirror were dozens of tabloids. Some ripped from magazines, others printed from online. But all of them had her on the cover.
And right below it, written in either pink lipstick or marker, read:
Persephone: Goddess of SLUTS!!!
She wanted to rip it down. To wipe the writing off and throw it all in the trash.
But she couldn’t.
Her body stayed in place. Her eyes widened the longer she stared.
What did she do to deserve this?
Slowly, lilies of the valley bloomed in her hair.
Why were people treating her like trash? They didn’t know her. The girl in the tabloids? That wasn’t her.
The bathroom floor shook, rumbling with anger.
None of this was fair. Why couldn’t they treat her with respect? She wasn’t a joke.
Cracks quickly littered the tiles.
Why couldn’t anyone see she wasn’t some dumb village -
Dense thick vines shot up, breaking the floor. They crashed into the sinks, the dryer dispensers,
And shattered the bathroom mirror.
Persephone gasped. She rushed away from the falling shards of glass. Her eyes stayed wide, in awe of the damage.
The damage she caused.
Her breathing quickened as she grabbed her chest. This shouldn’t be happening anymore.
Sure, she slipped up at dinner with her mama. But that was a one time thing.
And if it’s still happening, it meant…it meant-
Persephone sat down, placing her head on her knees. Tears filled her eyes while she tried to calm down.
After a few moments of shaky breathing, she finally stood up. Persephone caught glimpses of the flowers in her hair. Once she mentally prepared herself, she tore them out.
“Maybe… no one will notice?” She looked around again at the destroyed bathroom, and groaned again.
Before resuming her walk, she grabbed a nearby trashcan and blocked the door with it.
At this point, going to class seemed pointless. While gardening usually made her feel better, distance was needed. And if it stopped the attention, then-
“Persephone?”
She froze again, before recognizing the voices. She looked up to see Aetna and Syke, not too far away.
“O-Oh! Hi guys!” She quickly ran towards them. But the closer she came, the clearer she saw their worried faces.
Persephone stopped, furrowing her eyebrows. “What are you-?”
She noticed the bundles of posters in both their arms. From the ripped corners, they were taking them down. Her eyes widened a third time as she made the connection.
She grabbed a poster out of Aetna's stack. Sure enough, it was another tabloid cover of her. A minor version of the bathroom’s manifesto. “Where…where did you find these?”
Aetna flipped the posters with their thumb. “We found them outside the English department after our class. I don’t know if they’re anywhere else, though.”
Persephone’s mind flashed to the bulletin board.
“Honestly, who has time for this?” Aetna lifted them, lips dipping into a frown. “Don’t beings have more important things to do?”
Her hands curled against the poster, tearing it slightly. She felt her anxiety build up again.
Syke looked over Persephone. “Hey, are you?”
“I-I JUST WANT YOU GUYS TO KNOW–” Persephone exclaimed, bawling the paper up. “T-THAT THIS IS A HUGE MISUNDERSTANDING! ”
“I M-MEAN, I’m not with him at all! We’ve never done anything at-!”
“Whoooa whoa whoa,” Syke touched Persephone’s shoulder. “We believe you, don’t worry.”
Persephone stopped, still fiddling with the bawled up paper. “...Really?”
Aetna stepped up. “Of course. “Publications” like Olympus GOS run on badly researched journalism and distorted public opinion. They prey on unsuspecting beings who can’t defend themselves, and who bring sizable profits. It’s completely distasteful.”
Persephone looked at Aetna, before glancing at Syke. She touched her shoulder. “They’re vultures.”
“Ohhhhh.” She tossed the paper in a nearby recycling bin. “So…you guys won’t judge me?”
Syke shook their head. “If you say nothing happened, then nothing did. Just try to stay safe, ok?”
Persephone nodded while Aetna drew her eyebrows together. “Hey, don’t you have a class?
She jumped up. “Oh no! I have to go, like, right now!” She started to dash off. “I’ll text you guys later! Byeeeeeee-”
As Persephone raced off, Syke kept a close eye on her. They turned to Aetna, in the midst of tearing down a poster. “...You think she’s telling the truth?”
“Of course she is. You don’t honestly believe this trash, do you?” They held it in front of Skye’s face.
Syke snatched it out of their hands. “I don’t, but…”
She examined the poster, wrinkling it between their hands. Their eyes focused on Persephone. “Persephone seems like a sweet gal…a little ditzy, but sweet. What’s she doing with him?”
“I’m sure it’s one big misunderstanding, like she said. Besides…” Aetna frowned, ripping another poster. “Shouldn’t he be focusing on the Underworld? The place he’s in charge of?”
They stuffed the posters in a trash can. “He’s got bigger things to worry about, than some poor helpless girl.”
~~~
Persephone thought escaping into the dark, hidden depths of the Underworld, would make everything go away.
But as she tried to work (on this fancy, fangled computer), the morning replayed in her mind. The stress, the anger. All of it came back, leaving her perpetually stuck.
Persephone groaned, rubbing her face. “I can’t figure this out…I need help.”
She pushed back her chair, looking around the office. Walking towards her was Thanatos, carrying dozens of papers. His hair had a few flyaways, but otherwise he looked fine…ish.
She cleared her throat. “Um, Thanatos? Could you-?”
“No.”
“B-but I didn’t even-”
“Still no.” He walked past her, not even giving her a glance.
Persephone pouted, blowing air out of her nose. Her eyes darted to her phone. There was someone who could help…
A smile formed on her lips as she started texting. Soon, she heard the familiar sound of four inch heels coming her way.
Persephone looked up right as Minthe approached her desk. Minthe crossed her arms, glaring down at her. “What?”
“I uh-” She pointed at her computer. “I’m having trouble filing these documents…could you help me?” She smiled nervously.
Minthe furrowed her eyebrows, her glare deepening. “What do I look like, IT Heph? You know I have more important things to do.”
“I know, but…” Persephone’s eyes lowered to her desk.
Minthe’s glare stayed on her. After a moment, she let out a disgruntled sigh.
In one swift move, she hunched over her. A strong, woody fragrance quickly reached Persephone’s nose. Minthe’s hand moved over to her mouse. “Alright, first you-”
Persephone tried to focus on Minthe’s voice. But her mind soon drifted back to university. Why were people posting her around school? It was easier to ignore online, when she barely understood it. But seeing it in person was-
Panic wrapped her mind, like vines slowly tightening.
Why did everyone care about her and Hades? Why did Hades care about her? She wasn’t anyone important. No one knew about her and her mama-
Her heartbeat quickened.
Oh my Gaia.
Word was spreading around so fast. Her mama already gave her a warning. If she knew about this, then-
Her chest constrained, crushing her heart.
Then it w-was only a matter of time until s-she took her-
“Hey!”
She snapped back, her eyes meeting Minthe’s angry stare. “Look, if you’re not gonna listen when you asked me for help,” she stood up. “Then you can figure it out.”
As she started to walk off, Persephone got up to follow. “Wait! I didn’t-”
She stumbled, her body crashing to the floor. Persephone held her head, furrowing her eyebrows. “How…how did-?”
She turned around, eyes following to her feet. Thick, green vines dug around them, inching up her legs.
Her eyes widened, fingers digging into her scalp. This wasn’t happening, this wasn’t-
“Gods, are you that clumsy?”
Persephone looked up at Minthe, staring her down. “Is this normal for you, or-”
“No! I-” She watched as Minthe’s eyebrows raised up. Persephone’s eyes lowered. “I’m sorry, I…I didn’t mean to space out. I don’t know what’s wrong with me…”
Minthe went quiet. For a minute, Persephone felt the water nymph’s hard gaze.
Finally, she held out her hand.
Persephone grabbed it, being pulled up with ease. “It’s fine, I guess. I’m not exactly on my A-game today, either.”
Persephone looked back at her desk. The vines had withered, weak enough to break from.
“Since you’re completely out of it,” Minthe started, forcing Persephone to turn back. “I think it’s time we take a break.”
“We…?”
Minthe scoffed. “I mean, you don’t have to if-”
“I do!” Persephone’s mood picked up, grabbing Minthe’s hand again. Her eyes shined at Minthe. “I’d really like that!”
The water nymph’s eyes darted from her hand to Persephone. She let go, smiling sheepishly. “Sorry… got carried away.”
Minthe crossed her arms. “Whatever. There’s a cafe on the 3rd floor. It’s actually pretty decent.” She started to walk off. “You’re paying, by the way.”
“Ok!” Persephone followed, practically flying along the way.
~~~
Minthe didn’t know why she asked her to lunch. To be honest, she would’ve been fine leaving her high and dry.
But seeing her on the floor, the goddess genuinely looked… miserable? Minthe assumed Persephone ignoring her came from arrogance. But was there something else distracting her? Did she feel bad for her?
Well, not bad actually. More like pitied. Close enough, right?
“Wow, this place is so cute! It’s great that Underworld Corp has something like this!”
The two women sat in front of each other, with a dark blue table between them. The cafe was spacious, accommodating for the large number of employees. On Minthe’s request, they were tucked in a quieter part of the cafe.
Minthe sighed, leaning forward in her chair. “We only have this, so we stay on time for work. They can’t stand it when we leave the office for breaks.”
Her mind flashed to the times Hades would sweep her out the office. Sometimes for lunch, but mostly for fun. That was half of their relationship. The rest…wasn’t.
“Oh…” Persephone looked down, picking at her salad. She grabbed a forkful and shoved it in her mouth. “Thanks for asking me out!” She said between chews.
Minthe rolled her eyes, sipping her third cup of coffee. “This isn’t really “out,” but sure. It’s no big deal.”
For a moment, both went silent. Minthe swirled her drink, while Persephone picked at her salad more. Minthe cleared her throat. “So-”
“Are you, like, a model or something?” Persephone’s eyes focused on her, bouncing her leg lightly.
Immediately, Minthe laughed. “Or something. You think if I was a model, I’d work here? ”
“Well, when you put it like that…” Persephone rested her face in her hand. “Sorry, I don’t know much about you. It felt like a good guess…”
Minthe thought for a moment. While she didn’t want the goddess to know her, learning more about her could be beneficial. She couldn’t be sweet and perfect all the time. Besides, what was that saying? Keep your friends close…
“You know what? You’re right.” Minthe smiled. “Let’s do this: you ask me a question, and I’ll answer. Then, I’ll ask you one and we keep switching off. Deal?”
The goddess eyes sparkled again. She returned Minthe’s smile. “Deal! What do you do for fun?”
“Hmm…” Minthe tapped her manicured fingernails on the table. “A lot of things, really. I used to go clubbing constantly, ‘till my friend got too “old” for it. We do yoga now, but I still miss dancing.”
“Are you a good-”
Minthe lifted up her hand. “Upp upp up. Time for my question: What do you do? Besides this internship, that is.”
“I go to Olympus U! Majoring in Horticulture Sciences. It’s been pretty-”
For a brief second, Minthe swore she saw Persephone’s smile falter. “Pretty great! I love it there!” She smiled wider.
Minthe tilted her head slightly. She’d have to remember that for later. “That’s good. I wanted to go to college when I was younger, but…”
She pressed her lips together, before sighing again. “It didn’t pan out.”
“Oh I’m sorry Minthe.” Persephone leaned forward, placing her hand on hers. “You could always go back if you wanted to!”
Her eyes looked at her hands again. Were they always this… warm?
She looked off briefly. “It’s fine. Don’t you have another question?”
“Right!” Persephone let go, opting to twirl her short hair. “Is yoga hard? I’ve always wanted to try it!”
Minthe shook her head. “Not really. The class is pretty casual, and they love getting new people. Especially the instructor.”
And before she could stop herself, she said: “You could join if you want.”
Minthe’s eyes widened the second she stopped talking. Meanwhile, Persephone lit up with excitement. “Really?! You’d let me come with? ”
“Uh, I mean-” Minthe sipped her coffee again. “You technically could, but the class is really early-”
“That’s alright! I’m a morning person!”
“And they only do it Tuesdays and Thursdays.” And Saturdays, but she wasn’t gonna mention that. “You must have classes or-”
“No way! Those are my only free days!” Persephone perked up in her seat, cupping her face. Her excitement only seemed to grow. “I’d love to go, if you’re okay with it! I don’t wanna cramp your style or anything…”
Minthe gazed at the goddess. Her shining, pink eyes looked right through her. A strange feeling overcame Minthe. At this point, it’d be cruel to say no. She asked nicely enough, and seemed genuinely excited. Maybe…it might be f-
She caught herself. What was she saying? What was she thinking?
This was the same goddess who was taking her livelihood. Her relationship. Everything.
And the second Persephone flutters her pretty pink eyes, she folds?
How stupid was she?
“Minthe?” Persephone tilted her head, reaching out again. “Are you-”
“I’m fine.” She pulled away, regaining her composure. She still had to let her come. What if she blabs to Hades about her, or something? “You can come, I guess. I’ll give you the time and address after work.”
“Could you text it to me? I’m leaving early today!”
Minthe huffed, crossing her arms. “What for?”
She knew what it was for. Hades was probably taking her on a charming, expensive date. Or maybe a night out in the Underworld. Figures she’d be so-
“I’m helping out at a charity event! I’ll be giving out food to the beings who need it. It’s gonna be great!”
“Oh…” Thank Gods no one could hear how bitchy her inner dialogue was. She leaned back again. “Sounds perfectly delightful. I’ll text you everything later, ok?”
“Ok!” Persephone kept eyeing Minthe excitedly.
She furrowed her eyebrows back. “What?”
“It’s your turn to ask me a question!”
Minthe’s eyes widened briefly, before focusing back on Persephone’s. “Right…”
~~
After dropping Persephone off at her desk (and thoroughly explaining how the computer worked), Minthe slowly walked back to hers.
From their conversation, she had a better grasp on the goddess. She was vegan, had a fondness for plants, and came from the Mortal Realm. No wonder she was technologically illiterate. And woefully naive.
She’d never spent longer than a day in the Mortal Realm. Sure, Hades would take her occasionally. But they were short, palatable visits that never dragged on. And besides, out of all the realms, the Mortal Realm was the least advanced. Why would anyone want to live there?
From Thetis, she knew nymphs typically moved out of there. Mainly for better opportunities, or a change in scenery. She also knew of nymphs who fled to the Mortal Realm, never returning.
Finally, Minthe sat back at her desk. She continued to think, tapping her fingers on it.
If Persephone were a nymph, she wouldn’t think twice about it. But how did a goddess like her only move here recently? (Another fact she learned from Persephone.) Shouldn’t she be jumping back and forth between the realms? She was old enough to, anyway.
And from skimming Underworld Media, no one knew she was a goddess. They just assumed she was a low grade flower nymph, who’d captured the King’s heart (their words, not her). If they found out, the tabloids would freak even more.
Minthe’s lip curled into a snarl. She couldn’t even find joy at the idea of that. Between the goddess and the tabloids, she’d pick her with no hesitation. Tabloids sucked.
Suddenly, Thanatos appeared in front of her desk. She flinched. “Oh my Gods- I need to put a bell on you or something. ”
“Yeah yeah, love you too Minthe. ” Thanatos sighed, dropping a stack of papers on her desk. “Listen, guess what these are.”
She stood up, peering at the papers. Dozens of names and deaths were listed, with no end in sight. “Um…soul reports?”
He leaned in, pointing at them. “This is supposedly the Soul Report from a few weeks ago. Remember when I said there should be something about the backed up souls? Well-”
Thanatos chuckled, patting down the flyaways on his head. “It’s. Not. Here. At all!”
Minthe sucked in her teeth. “Oh Thanatos…” She reached over, placing her hand on his shoulder. “Maybe it’s still being processed?”
“They never take this long…” He rubbed his eyes. “This has never happened before. And more souls keep popping up…I can’t document a soul I don’t know about.”
“Well…tons of papers get lost here. It could’ve gotten misplaced, if anything.”
“It’s…possible.” Thanatos sighed. “I was gonna ask Hermes if he knows anything after work. Wanna come with?”
Minthe gasped, batting her eyes. “You want me to third wheel your da-”
“Yes or No.” He glared at her.
“Hmm…sure, why not? You’re gonna need a buffer in case things get awkward. And they always do with Hermes.”
“Weren’t you trying to cheer me up?”

Chapter Text
Minthe was not a fan of flying. At all.
While reserved for the gods, she wasn’t jealous. The idea of floating in the air, becoming weightless? Relying on a power fueled by feelings?
No fucking way. She’d take a car, any day.
But not today.
“T-Thanatos- ” Minthe hissed as she clung tighter to him. Her eyes were shut, shielded from the warm, orange sky of Olympus. “I swear to Gods if you drop me- ”
Thanatos rolled his eyes. “Minthe, I’ve been flying since I was 800. I know what I’m doing-”
“Why c-couldn’t we take your car? And can’t you fucking teleport?! ”
“My car’s in the shop, and I’m too burnt out to teleport.” He groaned. “Do you know how much energy that takes? It’s a nightmare. Besides, we’re here.”
Slowly, Minthe peaked through one of her eyes. They were quickly approaching the stone cobbled ground.
She shut them again, squeezing the death out of Thanatos. He choked, struggling to land them safely. Soon, they collapsed.
While Thanatos clutched his chest, Minthe shot up from the ground. She brushed the dirt off her knees. “Since you were 800, huh?”
“W-well normally- ” He heaved, failing to get up. “I don’t have a deathtrap hanging off me.”
She grabbed Thanatos’ hand and pulled him up. “Whatever. Let’s just hope this isn’t a total loss.”
The two made their way towards Hermes’ home. While many god’s houses were grand (and fairly expensive), his was rather modest. A standard, one story house with not many decorations.
Minthe hung back as Thanatos rang the doorbell. “Remember, don’t make it awkward or weird.”
His head turned, glaring at her. “I don’t make it weird.”
“So you agree? You make it awkward?”
“Minthe, I swear to- ”
“Heyo!”
They both focused on the opened door. Dressed in a loose fitting tank and sweatpants, Hermes smiled at them. His vibrant hair fell messily to his shoulders, as if in permanent bed head mode. “Nice to see ya Thanatos! And you too…Minty?”
“Minthe. ” She looked off to the side with a furrowed brow.
Hermes’ smile became shaky. He scratched his head. “Riiiight, sorry about that. My b.” His attention soon went to Thanatos. “Anyways, what're you doing here?”
“I need your help with something. It’s about work.”
He tapped his fingers on the door frame, raising an eyebrow. “And you couldn’t, like, call me about it?”
Thanatos’ eyes widened, before composing himself. His hand reached the back of his neck. “W-well, we were in the area-”
Oh my Gods. Minthe stifled a scoff, opting to roll her eyes.
“And I thought it’d make sense to drop by. Killing two birds with one stone, you know?”
“Oh…alright!” Hermes moved away, gesturing towards them. “Come in!”
Once they walked in, Minthe observed her surroundings. None of it was to her taste: flashy posters on the walls, with second hand furniture all over. And dozens of video games on the coffee table.
Thanatos seemed impressed, though. He picked up one of them, while he and Hermes sat down on the couch. “Oh, I’ve been wanting to play this one. Any good?”
Hermes leaned back, easing into his seat. “Yeah, I think it’s fun! Starts off kinda slow, but it picks up after awhile.” His eyes glanced at Minthe, still standing. “C’mon, you can sit! The couch don’t bite.”
She glimpsed down at the ratty, slightly torn couch. Her stance stiffened, tightening her lips. “I’m fine. Can I use your bathroom?”
“Sure! It’s done that hallway, third door to your left.”
“Thanks.” She marched off as the two gods continued talking.
Once Minthe tucked herself behind the hallway, she relaxed. It was dumb, but she felt uncomfortable in other being’s homes. From Hera’s overly glizy mansion, to Hades’ dark and foreboding house. A strong wave of anxiety would creep inside, freezing her completely.
Even in her childhood apartment. Filled with thumping bass and dampened rowdy voices, her senses were always on edge. Never having her guard down.
After finishing her business, she left the bathroom. While she started going, something held her back. If Thanatos botched it with Hermes (which was likely), they’d need another lead. Or other info to fall back on.
And Hermes’ bedroom was across the bathroom. With the door conveniently cracked open. Surely, if he didn’t want anyone to come in, he would’ve-
Minthe rushed into his bedroom.
The first thing she noticed were dozens of empty envelopes and boxes, scattered on the floor. Which made sense; he was the messenger for the gods. But the mess continued with dirty sports clothes and sneakers.
Minthe stepped over them, trying not to cast judgment. Her place wasn’t much better, either.
She approached the equally trashed desk next to his bed. It was small, piled with papers and more envelopes. Her eyes scanned it, looking for anything that stood out.
Most were stamped with either a lighting bolt, or a pomegranate. Her nerves (stupidly) tensed at the sight of both. But one did catch her eye:
A blade of wheat, intertwined with a snake.
Only a handful of letters had the stamp. Unlike the others, the pages had a rougher texture to them. The lettering was tidy, but the faint pen splotches revealed its handwritten nature.
She didn’t read them over, though. If it was who she thought, then it wasn’t worth investigating.
Minthe made sure to leave quietly and quickly. She walked back, hoping her absence wasn’t too noticeable.
The second she entered the living room, her eyes widened at the scene unfolding. Hermes was close, leaning into Thanatos’ personal space. But from his narrowed eyes and clenched jaw, something had gone wrong. Thanatos stared back at him, a mix of confusion and fear on his face.
His eyes immediately went to Minthe’s. Hermes followed his gaze, before leaning back into his seat.
She continued to stare, wrinkling her eyebrows. “…Am I interrupting something, or-?”
The two gods glanced at each other. Thanatos got up from the couch. “No. I think we’re pretty much done here.”
“Uhhh…” Minthe watched as he marched to the front door. She looked back at Hermes, who only shrugged in response. After giving a small wave, she followed Thanatos.
Once they were outside, Thanatos let out a groan. His hands ran up his face, soon entering his hair. His head dropped down. Minthe stood back, still staring confusingly at him.
She cleared her throat. “So…did it get awkward or-”
“Oh my Gaia Minthe, not now. ”
She flinched, her eyebrows deepening for a second. Of course teasing him was the wrong move now. Gods, was she really that bad at this? Comforting others?
With pursed lips, Minthe walked over to him. Slowly, she placed a hand on his shoulder. She kept a close eye on him. “...Sorry.”
A beat of silence passed between them.
Thanatos uncovered his face, moving his head up slightly. His eyebrows furrowed in her direction. “Is that… all you’re going to say?”
Yes. Yes she was.
Minthe pouted. She removed her hand, holding her arms instead. “Oh my Gods- what else am I supposed to do? Pat your back? Give you a hug? ”
He chuckled, covering his mouth. “N-nevermind, I think I’m good now.” Thanatos sighed. “Anyways, I’m kinda fucked now.”
“What did you do? I’ve never seen Hermes like that before.”
“For once? Nothing!” He ran his fingers through his hair, failing to tidy it. “Hermes was fine, until I asked about the Soul Report. Then he did a complete 180. Said he didn’t know anything about it, that I shouldn’t fuck with it-”
Minthe’s eyes widened again. “What?”
He gestured to her, matching her surprise. “Exactly! I don’t know what his deal is, but I’m not getting anything out of him. And I already asked Hecate. She doesn’t know either, but “advised” to fix it now.”
“…I don’t know if this helps, but I may have found something…”
“Found?”
She dropped her arms. “Ok, I may have snuck into Hermes’ room while you two were…” Minthe gestured vaguely at him. “And I found a ton of letters. Most were from Zeus and him, but there were a couple from Demeter?”
“Well…Hermes has done deliveries for her. He’s familiar with the Mortal Realm, and has family there. So it doesn’t feel out of place…”
Thanatos shrugged. “But I don't know if she’d have anything to do with it. She’s the goddess of harvest…she’d need them to be alive, right?”
Minthe simply shrugged back.
Thanatos dug his hands into his pockets “I’ll keep note of it. I do have another lead, though. It’s out of the way, but the only shot I got.” He looked over to Minthe. “I’m gonna need Thetis for it, too. Could you ask her for me?”
She pulled out her phone. “Sure. We have yoga tomorrow, so I’ll ask her-”
Little Miss Goddess:
hi minthe!
dont wanna bother you but
im super excited for 2morrow!
thats all :)
Her heart skipped for a second, a slight blush crossing her face.
Weird.
She started typing, ignoring her lapse in judgment.
You:
Kay, if you say so
Here’s the address. Make sure you’re not late
“Minthe?”
She stared back at her phone…why was she waiting?
“Are you coming with us? It’d feel weird to leave you out.”
Little Miss Goddess:
thank you!!!
and ill be on time
pinky promise
:D
Briefly, a smile flashed her face. Her face flashed with shock, before dampening them both. She put her phone away. “Sure…not like I’m doing anything else.”
~~
TGOEM’s charity food drive was going off without a hitch. Hosted in a spacious storeroom, beings of all shapes and species were spread all over. Some gave out food to beings waiting in line, while others sorted out the donations.
Persephone smiled and handed a box of groceries to an older looking goddess. “Here you go!”
The goddess nodded, grabbing the box. She returned her smile, highlighting her wrinkles. “Thank you so much dear! And have a very nice day!”
Persephone waved as the goddess walked off. Her smile brightened tenfold.
This was the perfect event to take her mind off things. Obviously, she wasn’t only doing it for that. She genuinely loved meeting other beings and getting involved with the community. It reminded her of the Mortal Realm, working with other nymphs for a greater cause.
And this time, she could help out how she wanted. She wasn’t allowed to visit outside villages, even when they were dropping off food. She could only help package and sort, usually with her mama.
That’s why her and Hestia were on the front lines, while Artemis and Athena were sorting donations near the back. Hestia bumped her shoulder, causing her to turn. “So, how are you doing? It’s not too overwhelming, is it?”
Persephone shook her head. “Not at all! I’m actually having a great time!”
Hestia grinned, her warmth brightening the area around them. “It does! I’m glad you’re having fun. And I’m so proud of this turnout!” She gave a box to a nymph waiting in line. “I hope we get more volunteers after this event. I’d love to do this 1-2 times a month, if possible!”
Hestia looked over to their dwindling pile of groceries. “Persephone, could you bring more food from the back? We’re running low.”
She nodded, quickly taking off.
The back of the storeroom functioned more like a maze. Riddled with doors and long hallways, it was tricky finding the main sorting area. Especially when it all looked the same.
Persephone scratched her head. “Ugh, c’mon Kore! Artemis showed you where it was…” She sighed, turning into another hallway. White, wooden doors were scattered down it.
Her footsteps clacked quietly on the tile floors. But as she continued walking, voices cut through the silent hallway.
“... can’t believe we got stuck on sorting duty…”
Her ears perked up. Though she didn’t recognize them, she assumed they were volunteers. Who could definitely point her to Artemis and Athena. With a bright smile, Persephone quickened her pace.
The voices lead her to the end of the hallway. The door was slightly cracked, letting a ray of light enter through.
She approached it, her hand lingering above the handle.
“Anyways, can you believe she’s here?”
A different voice laughed, her steps filling the rest. “Of course not! It's, like, so bizarre. Shouldn’t she be with… you know? ”
Persephone’s hand flinched.
“Exactly!” The first voice exclaimed. “You’d think TGOEM wouldn’t let her near them. I mean, she’s shacking up with Hades! I heard all about it on Olympus GOS. It’s like-”
“She’s totally bringing them down.” The second voice interjected. “Like, reputation wise. She acts like a complete poutana, and they still let her come? It’s so-”
“Desperate, right? Maybe they’re getting money from Hades, so they let her stay. Let a few things slide-”
The second voice groaned. “Gaia, you’re probably right…I have no idea what he sees in her.”
“Oh my Gaia, neither do I! Like, her boobs are massive and she’s super curvy. But I don’t see anything else…”
“At least she’s better than his last girlfriend. Now she was-”
“A fucking nightmare. And super boney, too!”
Somewhere between their talk, Persephone’s hand fell to her side. While the two volunteers continued talking, she didn’t register what they said. She couldn’t.
She stayed frozen in place. It was only for a few minutes. But it felt like an eternity.
Eventually, and slowly, she walked past the door. The volunteers didn’t notice her.
She turned to her left, entering another long hallway. Persephone went into the first room she saw. It was a dark, cold, and small storage space. Shelves of cans and vegetables surrounded the room, emphasizing its tight space.
Her body slumped down onto the tile floor. She held herself, wrapped her arms around her knees,
And fully spiraled into her mind.
In hindsight, thinking she could ever run away from this was stupid. She was stupid for trying, and stupid for believing everything would turn out alright. It was clear, no matter where she went, it’d cast an inescapable shadow over her.
Persephone bowed her head, blocking her sight. Like before, Lily of the Valleys grew around her head.
She hadn’t been in Olympus for long, but somehow everyone had an opinion on her. How was that possible? They couldn’t bother to think twice about what they read.
Strong vines crept up from the ground, breaking through the tile floor. A few vegetables grew further, traveling towards her.
Her mind briefly went to Euryale. Was she dumb for rejecting her offer? Was it the only way to change their minds?
…Did she even belong here?
Being part of TGOEM was a requirement for her staying in Olympus. It seemed like a drag, at the time. And the feeling didn’t change once she was initiated. But now?
She liked it. She wanted to help more beings. To hang out more with Artemis, Athena, and Hestia. It’s not like they would if she wasn’t part of it. But…if she was only dragging them down…
The vines wrapped around her feet, slowly crawling up her legs. Some even spread out around her, cracking the floor further.
They seemed to truly represent what TGOEM stood for. She was the fraud, masquerading as something she wasn’t.
They continued to grow, its greenery obscuring the floor. It traveled up the shelves, wrapping around boxes and cans-
And…if her mama knew how bad things were getting…s-she’d-
Persephone lifted her head. Her body froze again, but not out of sadness. Out of true, genuine fear.
She tried standing up, but the vines had completely covered her legs. After a few hard tugs, they finally broke.
With shaky legs, Persephone stood up. She looked around, eyeing the dozens of vines and overgrown greenery. She let out an exhausted sigh.
“Can’t even control my powers…it’s like I’m 800 again…” Persephone rubbed her eyes. “Early, they disappeared. Maybe if I try enough…” She shut her eyes.
Persephone tried to clear her mind and focus only on the vines. But no matter how much she forced it, she knew nothing was happening.
Thoughts swirled in her mind, making it even harder to concentrate. All the moments from today refused to vanish. They only stuck further, forming a bright pain to her head. Her hands flew to them, gripping her hair.
It was pointless; she couldn’t stop this. The constricting pain, clasping around her like hands crushing a flower. The heaviness in her chest, how everyone was watching her. Everything was spinning out of control, and nothing good was-
“You could join, if you want.”
She stopped.
The way it happened wasn’t ideal. But if she hadn’t reacted in front of Minthe, she wouldn’t have gotten lunch with her. She would’ve missed getting to know her. Being invited outside of work to hang out.
Persephone’s grip loosened. Slowly, the vines grew smaller and smaller.
And sure, it was small. Just a tiny seedling of a relationship. But if she focused enough, she could see it. A stem cracking through, emerging from its hardened shell.
She wanted to see it grow. So, so badly.
Persephone opened her eyes.
By this point, the vines had all but disappeared. Left in its wake was the shattered tile floor, revealing broken bits of plywood. She let out another sigh.
“At least it’s better than before…the bathroom looked way worse than-”
DING DING! DING DING!
Persephone paused, quickly pulling out her phone. From the sound of it, she had gotten a text message:
mrs? queen? aunt? hera:
Hello darling! Remember when I said we needed help with our garden? Well, It’s looking beastly now! It’d mean the realm to me if you came over later today. Schoolwork can wait!
For a moment, she felt uneasy. She’d met Hera a few times (in the Mortal Realm, never in Olympus), but her mama was always there.
Hera seemed…well, like from a completely different pantheon. Always dressed to the nines, and doused in sweet smelling perfumes that made Persephone’s head spin.
And from how her mama acted around her, Hera seemed… overwhelming.
But her mama also said not to judge a being by their looks. Only by their character. Maybe Hera was the super cool aunt she always wanted (She loved Hestia, but she was less “cool” and more “motherly”).
Besides, getting her hands dirty would be good for her. Another way to lighten this gloomy day.

Chapter 8: PomengranMints Update!
Chapter Text
Hi guys! I’m so sorry to do this, but PomengranMints will be taking a hiatus. I’ve run out of my buffer, and writing chapters in a short time frame is not feasible for me. Especially with juggling work and grad school!
I’m hoping the hiatus will be short-ish, though I don’t have an exact time frame. I do feel bad because I know a lot of you look forward to the story! And I hope you won’t forget about it once it comes back. I’m hoping to at least get 3-5 chapters written before I come back (and I’m sorry I’m leaving it on a weird cliffhanger).
Again, I’m so grateful you guys have been checking out my story! If you have any question, please check out my tumblr and ask! I promise I’ll answer. See you when PomengranMints comes back!

Chapter Text
Despite the orange Olympus sky shifting to a deep warm violet, the heat still rained down. And Hera and Zeus’ garden was unwieldy:
Overgrown shrubs and grass surrounded the space, chaotic in nature. Chaste and olive trees intertwined, branches snagging one another. Birds of all sizes inhabited the garden. The cuckoos were the loudest, but the lone Peacock was the most destructive.
While Persephone kneeled, digging through dirt and wild weeds, Hera sat on a nearby bench. She wore a large, blue sun hat decorated with peacock feathers. It matched her long, flowy dress fastened with a dark blue corset. She watched on through dark blue sunglasses.
She smiled, gesturing a fruity drink in her direction. Her stardust skin glowed ethereally, contrasting her blue attire. “That’s it Persephone! You’re doing amazing, darling!”
In all honesty, she thought Hera would help in the garden. Like as a fun, bonding activity. But when she mentioned it, all Hera did was laugh: “Such a funny joke! Now, be a dear and get started before it’s dark.”
“Thank you Hera!” Persephone sighed, wiping the sweat off her brow.
Hera leaned back, taking a sip from her drink. “It’s great to see you again! I can’t believe we haven’t hung out together yet. You’ve already been in Olympus for a few weeks now! Are you trying to ignore me?”
“I’m not!” She stammered, fiddling with her garden shovel. “I’ve just been busy with school and-”
She laughed, cutting her excuses off. “I’m kidding, dear! Besides, if I wanted to find you, I could.” Hera grinned and pulled down her sunglasses. Her bright blue eyes sparkled at Persephone. “Speaking of, how’s school going?”
“Oh, it’s been…” Her demeanor faltered, before picking back up. “It’s great! I’ve loved my classes. I feel like I’m learning alot!”
“Mhm, that’s nice dear-Have you met anyone yet?”
“I met these two beings that’re really nice! I’m hoping we’ll be friends! Their names are Aetna and-”
“What I mean is,” Hera cut her off. “Have you met any boys?”
Persephone thought for a moment. Then, she answered with a resounding:
“Nope!”
She grabbed her small shears and continued working.
Hera stared at the sweet, oblivious girl. After a second, she chuckled. “Oh come on, now. Surely, with your looks and… personality, someone must’ve taken interest.”
Persephone’s grip tightened around the shears. In a flash, someone did come to mind. But it wasn’t what Hera was looking for. She was clearly talking about romance.
And that was different.
“No…not really…”
Hera sighed, a pout forming on her lips. “Such a shame! But I’m sure someone will come and sweep you off your feet…” She paused, setting her drink down. “You know, you remind me so much of myself.”
She stopped. Did she hear that right?
Persephone’s eyes widened as she looked back at Hera. “...Really?”
“Of course! When I was younger, that is. You’re so precocious, but in a cute way. Not annoying at all. You have an eternally youthful spirit!”
“Oh-”
“And you’re obviously beautiful. You probably get that from me!” Hera laughed, putting a hand on her chest. “You’re like the daughter I’ve always wanted.”
Persephone gave a tight, confused smile. “But…what about Eris-”
She scoffed, waving her off. “Please. She barely visits, and when she does it’s complete chaos. I don’t know where she gets it from, but it’s certainly not me.”
“And Hebe…?”
“Awww, my precious girl~” Hera sighed wistfully. “But she’s so young, only 1,300! She needs a nice older sister to take after.” She pointed back at her.
While Persephone kept her smile, her mind was in a different place. She knew it was out of flattery. The Queen of Olympus calling you her daughter? Anyone else would be honored.
But…she already had a mama . And though she never met Eris, comparing the two of them felt…icky?
But, it’d be rude to disagree…Right?
“Well…having Hebe as a sister would be nice-”
“'I'm glad you agree!” Hera clapped her hands with a sense of finality. “Now it’s getting rather late, dear. You should join us for dinner!”
Persephone stood, wiping the dirt off her knees. “Are you sure? I wouldn’t wanna impose-”
“Nonsense! It’ll be small, nothing to stress over.” Suddenly, the peacock grabbed at the end of Hera’s dress. She gave a swift kick, knocking it a few feet away.
She thought again: today’s events were tiring, but Hera seemed insistent. And it was always nice to spend with…family? And free food was always nice, sooo-
“Sure!” Persephone smiled brightly. “I’d love to-”
“Fabulous!” Hera rushed over, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. She started leading her back to their glamorous mansion. “Let’s hurry, so you can get ready.”
“Ready? But I’m already-”
“Look at you, you’re all dirty!” Hera pushed her through the backdoor. They entered the living room, drowning in gold. Mixed with white drapes and furniture, it felt fit for royalty. Certainly grander than her mama’s dwelling. “Don’t worry, I have a few outfits upstairs for you to try. Just in case!”
“O-outfits? I-”
“Oh come on now! Don’t be such a downer, brother!”
“It’s called being practical.”
Oh no.
The two goddesses stopped as voices rang through. Footsteps quickly approached the living room.
Not here. Not him.
Persephone tried to move, but Hera’s grip stayed firm.
The gods entered: Zeus kept a bright smile, now focused on his wife. Adorned with a golden ivy wreath, his long purple hair rested on his shoulders. It soon fell to his back, contrasting against his short, white dress shirt. Tucked in with crisp white pants, and finalized with golden loafers.
But Persephone wasn’t focused on Zeus. She focused on him.
Slicked back hair, with the sides shaved. A hair strand fell to his face, between his square framed pince-nez glasses. A light blue dress shirt and a darker blue suit vest wrapped around his body, with dark slacks and dress shoes. A black tie hung around his neck, with a scar peeking out the collar.
The King of the Underworld. Head of Underworld Corp. Her boss-
“Hades!” Hera’s smile grew brighter, ignoring her husband’s gaze. She grabbed Persephone’s cheeks, forcing her lips together. “Look who’s joining us for dinner! I know she’s a mess, but isn’t she still beautiful? ”
Hades looked over to Hera, then Persephone. Who, on reflection, stayed frozen. She couldn’t force Hera off her, nor fake a smile. She only stared wide eyed, like a deer in headlights.
After raising an eyebrow, he turned to the Queen. “Hera, I’m not dignifying that with a response. Let the poor girl go.”
Hera huffed, letting go of her face. But she kept a grip on her arm. “Fine. I’ll just take her upstairs, so she can get ready.”
She pulled the frozen girl along, tapping her husband in the shoulder. “Tell the staff to get dinner ready, and make sure Thetis brings Hebe down.”
Zeus started to respond, but the two were up in a flash. He scoffed, looking back at Hades. “Did you know she was coming?” His lips tugged into a smirk.
Hades rolled his eyes. “No.”
~~~
The “guest” room (as Hera called it) seemed utterly massive. Twice the size of her room, both in Artemis’ and her mama’s home. Lush sheets covered the queen sized bed, matching the pearl white furniture. A nightstand, plush couch, TV, and vanity filled the room’s space. Smaller drapes, similar to the ones downstairs, decorated an opening of the balcony.
Persephone groaned, staring awkwardly in the full length mirror. Lights shined along its frame, highlighting herself even more.
Hera had placed 3 outfits in the walk-in closet for her. “Better to have options, darling!” She said before racing out the room. But all three…weren’t good?
Well, it wasn’t that they weren’t good. They just weren’t her.
The first was a very expensive looking coat, with a matching skirt. It shined, sparkling when the light hit it just right. Colored white with tinges of pink, it felt like something she’d wear. But it was all made of fur, like the smaller coat Hera gifted her. This time the coat drowned her, its train dragging on the floor in an unflattering way. Like a child trying on her mother’s clothes.
Meanwhile, the skirt was far too short. It barely covered her butt, and the fur itched it in an equally uncomfortable way. Definite no.
The second outfit wasn’t any better. It was a long sleeved top with a keyhole, matched with another short skirt. It reminded her of the white, keyhole sweater she bought for work. But it was all wrong.
The hole was big, showing off way too much. It might’ve worked for someone else, just not her. And instead of her preferred white or pink, it was blue. A strangely, familiar shade of blue. It sent her heart pumping with anxiety. Hard no.
And so, she settled on the last outfit: a short, strapless romper with a large bow tied at the chest. Sure, it was too short. But at least covered her butt. And it was white, so in her preferred colors.
This was fine…right?
Persephone sighed, covering her eyes. “Ugh…why did I say yes? If I knew he was coming, I’d-” Her hands dropped to her side.
On the bright side, they weren’t in public. No paparazzi following their every move. No one staring at her, waiting for her to mess up.
Everything would be alright. It had to.
With a shaky breath, Persephone left the guest room.
As she walked down the vast white hallway, her mind thought of a game plan. If she kept the conversation polite and amicable, it wouldn’t sway in that direction.
But not like, too polite? Not enough to show interest?
The right amount of politeness. She could do that.
Easy peasy.
She soon walked down the golden staircase. At the very bottom, a being was waiting.
She seemed older than Persephone, around a thousand years or so. Her white hair cascaded down, fading into a vibrant blue. It felt reminiscent of waves crashing on the shore. She wore a fun, flowy top paired with a blue skirt.
But the first thing she noticed, as she approached the last steps, were her fins. Though decorated with simple silver studs, it reminded her of Minthe.
“Hello!” The water nymph smiled and waved at her. “My name is Thetis. I make sure Hera and Zeus’ lives don’t go completely off the rails.” She chuckled. “And you’re-”
“Persephone m-ma’am!” She smiled back, abit wider than she expected. She lifted her hand. “It’s great to meet you!”
Thetis observed her carefully. Persephone smiled even wider. Her eyes slowly traveled down to her dirty, worn converse. Her eyes darted up. “Hera didn’t give you other shoes?”
She bit her lip, eyes lowering to the floor. “S-she did, but I…” Persephone trailed off. Her voice became a whisper as she said: “I don’t know how to walk in heels… ”
Thetis continued staring,
And then burst out laughing.
Persephone’s eyes stayed down. Of course. Any being over the age of 1,800 would've reacted the same. Any other being would know how to walk in heels.
But the highest heels she’d worn were her sandals… in the fields. Every other time, she was barefoot.
A vivid, orange blush crossed her face.
Like a child.
Thetis settled down, clutching her chest. “I-I’m sorry! I’m not laughing at you. ” She lowered her voice. “I’m laughing at Hera. What kind of being only supplies heels? I swear, sometimes she’s so hard to believe.”
“Oh…” Persephone eyed her uneasily.
Thetis bumped her shoulder, before walking along. “Now, let’s not keep everyone waiting! And Persephone?”
“Y-yes?”
“Don’t call me ma’am. Makes me feel old.”
~~
Slowly, Persephone observed her… strange surroundings.
The dining room was equally grand: placed in the center of the room, was a shining white dining table. White wooden chairs decorated in gold circled around it. Zeus and Hades sat on one side, with Hera, Persephone, and Thetis on the other. A few workers of the house stood around, but further away.
Her eyes started to squint. All the glittery golds and whites were starting to bug her eyes.
Persephone looked down at her plate: Briam, Yemista, with Fasolada soup on the side. Luckily, Hera was aware of her dietary restrictions. It got a laugh out of Zeus, but at least she could eat.
She shifted uncomfortably in her chair and peered to her left. Thetis was beside her, but Persephone’s gaze went to someone else.
Standing dutifully next to Thetis was a smaller, noticeably younger goddess. Her violet blue hands held the large, seemingly heavy jug of ambrosia with ease. While dressed in her mother’s matching blues and bows, her golden eyes stood out defiantly. Though Persephone stopped staring, Thetis’ eyes never left the girl.
“-And so I said, ‘if you can’t find this one simple thing, then maybe you shouldn’t be working in the wedding industry!” Hera huffed.
Hades raised an eyebrow. “What did you need, anyways?” He sipped his drink.
Hera sighed. “Oh, nothing special. Just a 18 karat gold chest.”
He immediately coughed, choking on the ambrosia. “Pardon?”
“They need it for the dowry! And they’re being very stubborn about it.” She rolled her eyes.
Zeus chuckled. “They must want to impress the family then! Why else would they be so firm?”
“Arrogance?” Hera asked, her tone suddenly tense but sweet.
“Hmm…” He leaned back in his chair and smiled. “I suppose. But that feels so boring. What do you think, Thetis?”
Thetis turned, taking her focus off Hebe. “Huh?”
Hera scoffed, sipping her cup. “ C’mon, Thetis! Try to keep with the conversation.” She soon swirled the cup, before finally looking at her daughter. “Hebe dear, Mommy wants a refill.”
Silently, Hebe moved towards Hera. Thetis wrinkled her brow. “Hera, don’t you think sitting down might be…I don’t know, good for Hebe?” She ended with a laugh.
“Hebe likes standing! Don’t you, dear?” Hera smiled at her, moving her cup towards Hebe.
She nodded and filled her cup. Hebe started walking, but stopped at Persephone. She lifted her jug expectantly.
Persephone immediately shook her head. “No thank you! I’m not uh, old enough? To drink? That’s what my mama says, at least-”
Zeus was the first to laugh. It’s boisterous, quickly filling the room. Almost overpowering its space.
Hades was second, but with Hera following after it’s hard to tell. While Persephone could barely hear him (less of an outright laugh, more of a subdued chuckle), Hera’s was as bubbly as the drink she held.
Thetis was last, seemingly joining to fit in. It was fast and sudden, not giving Persephone time to register hers.
A now confused smile plastered on Persephone’s face. Was it really that funny? Were they laughing at her, or her mama? And which option annoyed her more?
She looked over to Hebe, who simply rolled her eyes before walking back.
“Not old enough? Ha!” Zeus stopped, resting his elbows on the table. His eyes focused on the pink goddess. “How is Demeter?”
“Oh, uh-” She shifted again as he settled on her. “Good! She’s super busy, but I know she likes it. And everyone relies on her so much…”
“Ah, that makes sense!” Zeus shrugged. “There’s always something to do in the Mortal Realm. But Demeter’s been doing it for this long, without fail. Such a hard worker. Quite…admirable, I suppose.”
For a split second, a wistful glisten crossed Zeus’ eyes. In that second, Hera took a big sip from her drink. Hades’ eyebrows furrowed deeper, looking away.
Persephone nodded (obliviously) in agreement. “Yeah, a lot of the nymphs look up to her! She’s done so much for them!”
Zeus grinned brightly. “Good for them!”
“Of course you think it is.” Hera muttered under her breath.
His eyes glanced over to his wife. “What was that, Hera?”
“Oh, nothing!” Hera smiled wide, setting down her drink.
Thetis started sighing, rubbing her forehead. “Hera, can we not-”
“Thetis, I can’t just sit here and listen to this! Especially when our dear Persephone has no idea.” Hera gestured at Persephone, like she was a poor helpless puppy.
Persephone leaning in slightly. “Um, I-”
“No idea about what, Hera?” Zeus tilted his head, his smile firmly in place.
“That the reason she helps so many nymphs, is because you keep SLEEPING WITH THEM!” Hera stood while she spoke, solidifying her rage. Her skin shined brighter, forcing everyone to squint. “You’re basically SERVING them on a silver PLATTER.”
Persephone tried to raise her eyebrows, only to squint harder. Oh. That?
Her mama explained the situation several times growing up. Because of Zeus’... nature, a thing her mama ranted about, nymphs sought her out for safety.
But each one was different: sometimes, they were hiding from the Queen’s fury. Others, already smited by her, would come out of fear. But many times, they were expecting and in need.
Even now, before she moved to Olympus, pregnant nymphs came to her mama’s doorstep in tears. She watched as her mama sat them down, gave them figs, and a shoulder to cry on. She’d give them a place to stay, opportunities to work, and a community to rely on.
So yes, she was aware of the situation.
But was she going to mention it now? Nope!
“Maybe they wouldn’t go if you didn’t chase them out!” Zeus smiled, his eyes staying on the Queen. His tone stayed shockingly light and fun. And vaguely demeaning.
“I’m sorry, what? ” Hera scowled, deep wrinkles forming on her face. “ What kind of poor excuse is- ”
Thetis raised a hand, using the other to cover her sight. “Is this really the place to do this? In front of a guest? And Hebe?”
Hera glared down at her. She then huffed, quickly leaving the table. “Fine then. Let’s argue somewhere ELSE.”
Zeus glared back at Thetis with a furrowed brow. With a reluctant sigh, he followed.
The table went quiet for a moment. Thetis sighed, looking over to Persephone. “I’m so sorry. This normally doesn’t happen!”
Hades shot her a look. “Thetis, don’t lie to her.”
“I’m not lying! They don’t argue until dinner’s-”
“I told you,” Zeus’ voice cut in. “I wasn’t seriously seeing them! I never do! I was only-”
“Don’t LIE to ME! Whose underwear did I see on our BEDROOM FLOOR!” A loud shatter rang through. Now we don’t have ANYONE to take care of our garden! ”
Zeus stammered for a second, before responding: “Because YOU turned them into a PEACOCK!”
“Oh Gods.” Thetis covered her face, lowering her head to the table.
Persephone shifted a third time, fiddling with her hands. A worker quickly left, assumingly to clean the mess. It sounded like a plate, so they were most likely in the kitchen.
“Is dinner over?”
Everyone looked to Hebe, still frozen in place. “Huh?” Thetis said.
“Is dinner over?” Hebe said blankly. “Because if it is, I wanna go to my room now.”
“I don’t-”
More crashes interrupted her. She flinched at every single one. After the 7th, she rubbed her forehead. “Yes, dinner’s over. ”
“Finally.” Hebe placed the jug down as Thetis walked over to her.
“Are you hungry?” She leaned down to Hebe’s level. “Thirsty?”
“Not real-”
“Exhausted beyond all possible belief?” She started picking her up. “Here, I’ll carry you!”
“Thetis, I don’t think you can-”
With a thud, Thetis dropped her on the ground. She was clutching her back, a groan escaping her. “Ok, maybe I can’t.”
And for the first time that night, a smile flashed on Hebe’s face.
She chuckled gently, grabbing Thetis’ hand. “Here, I’ll guide us upstairs. Then, we can eat in my room and watch TV. Doesn’t that sound nice, Grandma Thetis?”
“Don’t call me that! I’m your fun and flirty aunt! I ain’t old!” Thetis pouted.
The two walked off, talking amongst themselves. Which only left…
Persephone looked across the table. Hades stared back at her. She jumped in her seat.
Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no-
She felt her anxiety rise to her head, swirling indignantly. What was she supposed to do? To say? It was easier when everyone else was ignoring her. But alone?
“So…” Hades started. “How was-”
The screech of Persephone’s chair silenced him. She stood, yellow carnations and marigolds bursting on her head. She rushed out, leaving wilted petals behind her.
Hades’ eyes followed her, staying in his seat. “…That’s not the way to the front door.”
~~
WHY DID SHE GO BACK TO THE GARDEN?
Persephone ripped out the flowers, throwing them on the grass. She paced back and forth, thoughts continuing to rush in her mind.
How stupid was she? Couldn’t she figure out where the front door was? All she wanted was out, and her instincts must’ve taken it literally…
She stopped, her eyes moving to the night sky. Now doused in warm blues and violets, the bright stars sprinkled its atmosphere. The heat stayed, with a warm and sticky feeling forming on her arms and legs.
She could fly away, if she tried enough. But as she concentrated, her thoughts refused to settle. Her feet felt rooted to the ground, tying her down.
“Ugh, come on!” She held her fists on the sides of her head.
“Hello? Persephone?”
Her heart rate shot up. More yellow carnations and marigolds bloomed in its wake. She tried moving, but couldn’t budge.
Persephone looked down; vines and roots covered her feet, creeping to her shins. She closed her eyes. “Think happy thoughts, think happy-”
“Persephone?” Hades walked into the garden. “Are you okay?”
She looked up and smiled suddenly. “Peachy! I just-“ She laughed nervously. “Wanted to get some fresh air!”
“Oh…alright then.” Hades stood for a second, taking in his surroundings. “You know, this place does look better than it did before.” He started walking around. He stayed a good distance away, and couldn’t see her current predicament. Thank Gaia.
“Uh yeah! I l k-kinda worked on it a bit! Before d-dinner and…everything.” Persephone pulled more flowers out.
“Then you should be very proud. Not everyone has expertise in landscaping, let alone plants. You did an impressive job here!” Hades nodded and smiled lightly.
Persephone smiled wider out of nerves. Why was she acting so nice? Everything about today was awful. And here she was, pretending it was all ok. Her smile faltered.
And there was one person to blame for that.
“Um…Hades?” Her eyes flew down, focusing on the darkened grass and petals beneath her. “I-I know you’ve been very nice to me…s-showing me around the Underworld-”
“It only makes sense, since you’re so new to everything and all. How can any intern of mine function, without knowing her way around?” He chuckled.
Persephone bit her lip. “Yes, but…p-people have been…they’ve uh-”
“They’ve what?” Hades eyed her inquisitively.
“U-uh…those p-people…that follow us with cameras-”
“Oh, them?” Hades scoffed and waved her off. “I don’t pay them any mind. I’ve been in charge long enough to know what to pay attention to. These tabloids,” He spat out, as if it were a curse. “They aren’t important. Just gossip and talk. All meaningless, really!”
Persephone froze.
That…that wasn’t true at all.
If they were meaningless, then why were beings spreading it around school? Calling her Goddess of Sluts? A poutana? Talking behind her back, as if she was Hades’ new fling?
“I…um…”
She felt something boiling beneath her. More vines appeared at her feet.
If it was just talk, she wouldn’t have felt so badly about herself. So doubtful of everything, and so dumb.
“I-I…”
But for some reason, she couldn’t say it. Because if she did, everything would spill over and crack through the earth and-
“Persephone?”
Her mind went blank.
Slowly, she focused on Hades.
“Is there anything else you want to tell me?”
She froze again.
Then, she gave a quiet smile. “No, nothing at all.”
“Well, I’m about to leave. I don’t want to see my brother and Hera in another one of their fights.”
He walked up to the bench and pulled out a small, blue box tied with a white bow. “But, I wanted to give you something. No need to open it now, though.” He placed it down.
“Oh…that’s…” She swallowed the large lump in her throat. “Thank you!”
“It’s my pleasure.” He waved, before walking off. “See you at work, Persephone.”
She waved back politely. “See ya…”
Once Hades entered the mansion, her smile dropped. Her eyes dropped again. The vines and roots now traveled to her knees, locking her in place.
~~~
Persephone slammed her face into her bed. Her room was just how she liked it: cozy, and filled with plants and pinks. Its small space comforted her, reminding her of her old room. Hades’ gift sat on her nightstand, feeling bigger than ever.
She flipped open her phone to check her texts: one from Mama (of course), another from Artemis (now named Arty in her phone, saying she’d be coming home late). None from Minthe…Oh!
you have:12 text messages from aunty hestia
aunty hestia:
Hi Persephone! I know this is out of the blue, but I wanted to check in with you. I noticed you looked a little down at the food drive. I hope it wasn’t anything I said! But, I have a feeling it’s about the…attention you’re getting. Don’t worry, I’m trying everything I can to smooth this over. Even Athena is helping!
Oh no. Hadn’t she covered it up enough? She didn’t want them to worry. Especially Hestia and Athena.
aunty hestia:
I can’t assume your feelings about this, but I know it’s a lot for one being to handle. I’ve had my share of rumors thrown at me. And it’s all bullshit (don’t tell your mama I cursed lol)
Persephone giggled, and kept reading.
aunty hestia:
Trust me, this’ll all blow over soon enough, and
Hey Perse! Athena here
I’m snatching the phone cause I wanna give you advice lol
I cosign all Hesti said, but you gotta be assertive! You’re such a sweetie pie, and we all love you for it. But the “sweet” way doesn’t work everytime. Sometimes you gotta be tough! Hesti is great at both
She was? But Hestia seemed so nice and warm. Like a literal fireplace. How could she be…tough?
aunty hestia:
Anyway, if you’re already doing that my b!
Ok Hesti is reaching fok rhw phaona
I’m sorry Persephone! Athena can be so impulsive at times.
Goddess of Wisdom my butt
I’m kidding of course, but I hope we aren’t taking up your time.
We’ll see you at the next TGOEM meeting!
Slowly, Persephone rose from her bed. Her smile brightened as her eyes watered. “Ugh…I’m such a big baby…”
She wiped her tears, setting her phone down. Persephone’s eyes went to the blue gift box. Her hands trembled once she grabbed it, placing it on her lap. She untied the bow, opened the box…
And stared.
Placed on lush blue velvet, a comb resided inside. To her surprise, it was a faint light pink. It sparkled and shined with diamonds, ignorant to the dark room.
Persephone picked it up and examined it more. After a moment of silence, she said:
“...How am I supposed to wear this with short hair?”
The question echoed in her bedroom.
Suddenly, a cheery giggle left her lips.
“He gave me a comb I can’t use!” Her laughter continued, filling up the room. She grabbed her stomach and dropped the comb.
She finally sighed, taking in a breath. Persephone grabbed the box, opened her nightstand drawer, and dropped it inside. Instead, she pulled out a small white box. Her mama’s gift.
Persephone placed the box gently on her nightstand, and got ready for bed.

Chapter Text
“Girl, what are we waiting for?”
Minthe didn’t respond to a confused Thetis. Instead, she tapped her foot and checked her messages:
Little Miss Goddess:
thank you!!!
And ill be on time
pinky promise
:D
She scoffed, shoving her phone into her duffel. Between this and carrying her heavy yoga mat, Minthe was reaching her limit.
What was she doing? Was this a “Oh, I’ll totally hang out with you, but I’ll cancel last minute so I can inconvenience you” thing? What mind games was she playing a-
“GAIA TO MINTHE!”
“ACK!” Minthe jumped away from Thetis, dropping her mat on the stone cobbled ground. She glared and rubbed her right fin. “Thetis, what the actual-”
“Listen.” The blue water nymph pointed at her digital watch. “We have been standing out here for five minutes. The class starts in two.”
Thetis stepped closer, now matching Minthe’s annoyed glare. “And you haven’t given me a single reason about why we’re out here.”
Minthe scoffed, rolling her eyes like she was 1,600 again. “You could’ve gone without me, genius.”
Thetis’ glare immediately darkened.
Meanwhile, Minthe’s glare vanished. She glanced to her left, avoiding her gaze. “I… invitedsomeonetojoin.”
“You what? ” Thetis leaned in closer, raising an eyebrow.
“I invited someone and I am waiting for them.” She said again through gritted teeth. “Happy now?”
“Oh…” Thetis’ glare disappeared, replaced with a small smile. “Girl! Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” She slapped Minthe’s arm.
“Because if she did flake, I didn’t want you to make a thing of it!” Minthe sighed, rubbing her forehead. “Whatever. She’s probably not coming so-”
“Hiiii Minthe!”
The two water nymphs looked at the sound. Drifting down from the air was Persephone, waving excitedly at Minthe. With a loud thud, she landed.
“This is so exciting!” Persephone smiled bright, holding a black yoga mat and pink backpack with pride. “I hope I can keep up with you guys! I’m so-”
As her gaze went from Minthe to Thetis, the pink goddess stopped.
Thetis’ eyes widened as Minthe cleared her throat, looking off again. “So…this is who I invited…” She gestured at the blue water nymph. “Perspehone, this is Thetis.”
Persephone looked down, an uneasy smile forming. “Oh, we-”
“Haven’t met before!” Thetis threw her yoga mat at Minthe and enveloped Perspehone in a hug. “I’m the sexy, wise friend Minthe raves about!”
“I’ve never mentioned you. ” Minthe deadpanned, struggling to carry her mat.
“Well why not? I’m your best friend!” Thetis let go of Persephone and smiled. “By the way, your outfit? Too cute!”
Minthe stopped to observe the outfit in question. A dark pink crop top, oversized enough to meet her matching yoga pants. A pale pink flower was stamped on the top, with the words “Flower Power” in messy cursive.
Ugh, she thought. Sure, it was cute. In a “ditzy, giggly girl who spoke only in exclamation points” way. She could never pull it off, and thank Gaia for it.
Minthe’s eyes moved down. The only saving grace were Persephone’s pants: form fitting yet strangely comfortable. It hugged the goddess’ hips and, with her plus size body type, it did wonders.
Her own body was too thin. Too lanky. Too flat. But Perspehone’s…
She couldn’t place the feeling bubbling inside. But envy felt close enough.
That was it, right?
Envy was the reason she kept staring, until Thetis snapped her fingers in front of her.
“Ugh!” Minthe snarled at her, stepping back. “Thetis, what’s your damage?”
“We’re about to go in!” The blue water nymph leaned closer, lowering her voice. “ And you’ve been staring at Persephone’s crotch for too long.”
Minthe’s face flushed, turning dark orange. Her eyes darted between an oblivious Persephone and questioning Thetis. “I wasn’t staring! You can’t see straight! ”
Thetis leaned away, rolling her eyes. “ ‘Not the only one…” She muttered under her breath.
“What was that?”
“Oh nothing!”
~~~
“Wow, what a wonderful session! It felt like we were all in the zone~”
Minthe glared at the yoga instructor as she closed out their session. “I’m so happy to see new faces as well~ Our community is growing every day!”
The yoga instructor nodded at Persephone, sitting right beside Minthe. The pink goddess beamed, holding a hand to her chest.
Minthe’s glare deepened tenfold.
“I hope you beings have a glorious day! The goodness in me salutes the goodness in you!”
As everyone started to pack, Persephone jumped from her spot. To Minthe’s dismay, she rushed over to the instructor. “I wanted to say, I loved being here! This space has such a warm, welcoming vibe.”
“Aww, thank you~ I want this to be a safe, nurturing environment for beings. No one should feel afraid or worried. We’re very accepting here!”
Minthe watched Persephone’s eyes softening at the instructor’s words. A gentle, more natural smile formed on her pink lips.
Minthe ignored the way her heart fluttered looking at her. She focused back on the instructor.
“You know, I used to be obsessed with vapid junk.” The instructor placed her hand on Persephone’s shoulder. “The best clothes, makeup, you name it. I used to be a model and everything!”
“Well, that isn’t hard to believe. You’re so pretty!”
Minthe’s stomach dropped.
“Yeah, but it was so toxic~ My ex-boyfriend at the time didn’t make it better.” The instructor grinned, gritting her teeth in a strained way. “He actually made things a million times worse! It sucked!”
“Oh my gosh!” Persephone gasped, cupping a hand to her face.
“But then, I entered a prolonged period of peace, where I could reflect and become one with Gaia~”
The pink goddess scrunched her face.
“I turned into a tree for like, 10 years.” The instructor shrugged.
“Wooooow.”
At this point, Minthe loudly scoffed.
The two beings glanced at the red water nymph. The yoga instructor frowned. “Minthe dear, my most conflicted member, what’s wrong?”
Minthe walked closer to them. “Only 10 years? We’re immortal. 10 years is nothing to us.” She crossed her arms. “Seems a little shallow to me, that’s all.”
The instructor started to speak, until Persephone jumped in. “Does it matter?”
Minthe blinked. “Huh?”
“Well…if she changed for the better, who cares if it took less time? I’m sure there’s plenty of people who’ve lived a long time, and haven’t learned anything!”
Like me, for example.
Maybe if she’d learned from her failed relationships, she would’ve picked someone better. Someone that wouldn’t throw her out for someone more “agreeable.”
If she were capable of change, she wouldn’t be going in circles. Forever rooted.
Persephone touched the instructor’s arm. “Even if it takes 100 years or longer, what matters is that she improved! Shouldn’t we celebrate?” She smiled at Minthe.
Minthe stared at her. “ Whatever,” she huffed. She walked off, leaving Perspehone and the instructor to carry on.
She went up to Thetis, who was still putting away her stuff. “Are you busy after work?”
The blue water nymph thought for a moment, pinching her lips together. “Hmm…Hebe has dance afterschool, but I can convince Zeus to pick her up. Why?”
“Thanatos has a thing, and he needs your help. It’s about…” She trailed off, hoping she’d catch on.
Thetis squinted, then raised her eyebrows. “Oh! Right! I’ll call him later and ask for more details.” She looked over to Persephone and the yoga instructor. “They seem to be getting along.”
Minthe scoffed again, rolling her eyes. “Yeah, like Narcissus and his reflection. ”
“ Wow …your bitterness knows no bounds.”
~~~
With no doors, the coffee shop was packed. Beings stood in line, trying to start their day. Only a few sat around in its white open space, decorated with matching white tables and chairs. Blue kitschy decorations accented the shop.
Minthe looked out into the stone cobbled street, while Persephone and Thetis chatted. “Soooo, I know you’re doing an internship in the Underworld. And you're in school?”
“Yeah! I go to Olympus U for Horticultural Science. It’s been…” Persephone curled her lip, then quickly smiled. “Great!”
Minthe raised an eyebrow. The first time she did that, it was luck. This time felt like a coincidence.
“Good!” Thetis bumped Minthe’s arm. “And I hope she’s been treating you well! I know she can be a bit…uh-”
“Bitchy?” Minthe snapped back, not moving her gaze.
Persephone gasped. “Minthe! You’re not that at all!”
“Try telling that to half the office.” She glanced back at Thetis. “And others.”
Thetis sighed and sipped her coffee. “I have no idea who you’re talking about.”
“Uh huh.” Minthe directed her attention to Persephone. “Why were you late? I thought you’d flake on me.”
Persephone looked at her sheepishly, scratching her head. “I’m sorry…I slept in on accident. I went to bed kinda late last night…”
She then bawled her fists, looking very determined. “But I promise I won’t do it again! I’d hate to leave you hanging Minthe!”
Minthe stared again, her eyes widening. The same feeling bubbled up again, traveling into her chest. She coughed, suppressing it by drinking her coffee. “Whatever, I guess.”
Thetis eyed Minthe, before going back to Persephone. “Anyway, I’d love it if you joined us again! It’s so close and convenient to where we live.”
“Oh! I didn’t know Minthe lived in Olympus.”
“Well, I meant-"
Minthe broke out into a short cackle. “Are you kidding? I’d never live in a sunspot like this.” She leaned forward. “I live in the Underworld, where it’s as dark and frigid as me.”
Persephone pouted, furrowing her eyebrows. “But that’s so far! It takes me like, an hour to get there by flying. Do you have a car?”
She shook her head. “I use the trains. It takes forever , but it could be worse. I’ve heard traveling to the Mortal Realm is a nightmare.”
Persephone’s pout deepened. “Then why would you come here? It doesn’t sound fair to me at all.”
Minthe stopped again. A smile broke out on her face as she turned to Thetis. “Yeah, why would I Thetis? You must have an explanation!”
Thetis looked at both of them. She chuckled nervously, quickly grabbing Persephone’s hands. “Oh my Gods! Your nails!”
“What? ” She looked down, her pout disappearing. “What’s wrong? Do they look weird?”
“They’re so…short! I can’t remember the last time my nails were like that.” Thesis tilted her head, drifting into her memories. “Probably…when I was 1,900? After that, I started caring about my appearance!”
Minthe watched as Persephone’s mouth twitched briefly. Her lips formed a tight, bright smile. “Really?”
Thetis matched her forced smile, abit more genuinely. “Of course! It was right around the time I started working for Hera. She would’ve been around Minthe’s age? She made me more conscious about how I looked.”
“When you’re with her, you’re always put together! It’s why my nails stay stylish and perfect.” She observed Persephone’s hands, bringing them up closer. “If you let them grow out, they’d look so pretty! A nice pink polish should do, or French tips?”
Thetis turned to Minthe. “What do you think?”
Her eyes moved from Thetis to Persephone. Who only looked back anxiously.
She went back to Thetis. “They look fine as is.” She sipped her coffee.
The blue water nymph scoffed and let go of the Persephone’s hands. “Oh…that’s what you honestly think?”
"Yep.” She set down her cup, grabbing Persephone’s hand. “Isn’t her major like, advanced gardening or whatever? What’s the point of manicures if they’re gonna get dirty?”
Minthe rubbed Persephone’s fingers for a moment. Soft and warm, heating up her cooled skin. They contrasted against her own nails: sharp and painted with the deepest black.
She wondered how someone could be so soft. So bubbly and sweet. Like the embodiment of a warm summer day.
Minthe didn’t experience those much. Like she said, the Underworld was dark and frigid.
But whenever Hades took her to the Mortal Realm, she’d always complain. It was too hot, too humid, too ancient. She barely looked at the fauna, opting to stay on his horse and beg to leave. The visits were short, but they felt like an eternity to her.
Now? Eternity didn’t feel so bad.
“Besides, her hands are really nice. She’s basically perfect.”
Minthe looked up at Persephone. The pink goddess froze, a vibrant orange covering her face.
FOMPH!
The sound broke through the silence. Dozens of red roses and chrysanthemums burst from Persephone’s head.
Thetis' eyes widened at the sight, with Minthe looking on in confusion. “Uh…Persephone?” she started. “Does that normally-”
“Yes! I mean, no, I-” Her blush deepened as she stood up. “Allergies! Bathroom! Bye! ”
Before Minthe could respond, the pink goddess raced off. Only leaving a trail of petals in her wake.
Minthe leaned back in her chair, finishing off her coffee. “Weird.”
Thetis turned her seat and gazed right at her. “She’s not the only one acting weird.”
“Hm?” She side eyed the blue water nymph.
Thetis batted her eyelashes, clasping her hands together. “Persephone, even though I hated your guts for dating the ex I also hate, I think your hands and body are sexy! Let me glare at the yoga instructor for even talking to you! ”
Minthe straightened up. “Let’s be clear: I hate our yoga instructor for plenty of other reasons.”
“Doesn’t explain why you invited her.” Thetis tapped her cup with her nails.
“Look. I told her I did yoga, and she invited herself along. End of story.”
Was she lying? Yes.
Did Thetis need to know she was? Gods No.
Thetis stopped, easing her gaze. “You didn’t…try to say no? ”
Minthe shifted in her seat. “I mean, yeah. But she got real cute and annoying about it so-”
“She what? ”
Minthe paused.
Shit.
“She got annoying about it.” Minthe sunk into her seat, looking back into the street.
“No no, ” Thetis leaned closer with wide eyes. “You said another word? What was it? My old ass ears can’t hear anymore.”
Minthe sunk further, covering her face. “I said she’s annoying and dumb and ditzy. I hate her guts. The color pink is so tacky.”
Thetis kept her gaze, then sighed. “Minthe…” She said in a calm, strangely gentle tone.
Oh Gods. Not this.
She hated when Thetis switched to “mother” mode. It felt like she was talking to Hebe, and not a 3,000 year old being.
Yeah, she acted childish. And did, many times. But she was definitely not a child.
“I know things have been… rough for you. ”
No shit.
“And I know you’ve always struggled with relationships. Like, really struggled.”
Thank you for pointing out I suck, Thetis! I know I’m unloveable! Get to the point!
“Especially with… you know. But you two weren’t good for each other! I know I told you to make it work-”
Which failed because I’m 1) not a goddess, 2) total trash, and 3) a massive bitch.
“Which was a mistake I’ll own up to!” Thetis touched her shoulder. “The point is…if you want to try again with someone else , I think you should. But you have to be honest with yourself. And to me, your best friend.”
Minthe slowly uncovered her face. Thetis smiled encouragingly.
She stared back at the blue water nymph. “Uh-”
“I’m back!”
Oh thank Gods.
The two nymphs turned to Persephone, approaching her seat. The flowers had mysteriously vanished, along with the trail of petals.
The pink goddess sat down, a bright smile on her face. “Soooo, did I miss anything?”
“Just boring, snarky talk.” Minthe picked herself up from her seat.
“Ok!” Persephone said obliviously.
Thetis simply sighed. “Welp, I should be going to work.” She stood up, rolling her eyes. “Are you two going together, or-?”
“Oh my Gaia, can we? ” Persephone looked at Minthe with sparkling eyes. “I’ve never been on a train before. It sounds fun!”
“But you can fly.” Minthe scowled. “Why waste your time?”
Persephone thought for a moment. “Hmm…oh! I can always fly you to-”
“Nope! ” Minthe got up for her chair. “C’mon then. I hope you can run, we got to book it to the nearest station.”
“…So I’m not allowed to fly?”
“…Don’t leave me behind.”

Chapter Text
Getting to the train station wasn’t hard. Being 10 minutes away from her yoga class was an added bonus, though.
Unless you had a goddess flying ahead, who’d patiently wait near the entrance. It pissed Minthe off, but what else would Persephone do? Go by herself?
No, the real challenge was getting on the train.
The two beings stood at the station stop, in the midst of all the chaos. Beings all over walked by or stood near them, crowding the small space. Minthe sighed, holding her duffel. She looked down at Persephone.
She was standing close by to her. Too close, if her shoulder touching Minthe’s arm meant anything. Persephone’s gaze drunk in her surroundings, her bright pink eyes shining in its dim space.
Minthe’s cheeks flushed a light orange. She coughed, nudging Persephone. “Hey.”
Persephone jumped up and stared at Minthe. The water nymph squinted, shielding her eyes. “Could you do everyone a favor and turn those down? ”
She relaxed her eyes. The pink goddess smiled, clutching onto the straps of her pink backpack. “Sorry! It’s so busy down here, it’s kinda distracting. I don’t know how you do it everyday!”
“I’ve been doing this since I was 1,600. It’s muscle memory.”
Persephone gasped. “That’s so young! My mom would never let me do that, ever!”
A scowl crossed Minthe’s face. It’s not like she had a choice. It was either figuring out the train station herself, or waking up her mother. Who’d be A) hungover, B) with the next being of the week, or C) completely MIA.
Fortunately, it let her learn a lot of things on her own. Like cleaning their apartment at 900, paying bills at 1,500, and…moving out at 1,700. She wore her independence on her sleeve, and she’d be damned if anyone took it away.
Yet, she guessed some people didn’t have that struggle.
“Oh. Good for you.” Minthe rolled her eyes and looked away.
Silence grew between the two. Easy to miss, considering the constant buzzing around them, but still noticeable.
The water nymph’s fins pricked up once Persephone sighed. “Yeah…good for me.” She said in a small, dejected voice.
Minthe’s eyebrows flinched, softening her eyes.
DING! DING! DING!
“Ok Persephone,” Minthe stood straight and readied herself. “We’re about to get on the train. Promise me you won’t get lost in the shuffle.”
The pink goddess nodded, putting on a shining smile. “Ok! I promise!”
A hiss entered the station’s chaotic symphony as the train pulled in. Passengers crowded the area more, making the space even tighter. Persephone lost her footing and gasped, bumping into Minthe.
Minthe shot a look at her, then focused her attention on the train doors opening. Like clockwork, beings piled into the train. She pushed herself forward and shoved any being who got in her way. She was nearing the door, until-
“Minthe!”
Immediately, she groaned. She turned around, looking for her in the crowd.
Persephone wasn’t too far off; enough for Minthe to grab at least. Anger sparked inside her as passengers continued to push Persephone more. Why wasn’t she pushing against them? They were stepping all over her. It wasn’t that hard.
Minthe grabbed Persephone by her arm, swiftly pulling her in right as the train doors closed. The pink goddess sighed. “ Oh my Gaia, that was-”
A taller being pushed Persephone forward, landing into Minthe’s chest. More beings crowded around them, making it harder to move around them. It could’ve been worse. If Minthe wasn’t flat, this might’ve been more awkward. Keyword being “more.”
Minthe tried to ignore their bodies pressed together, grabbing the nearest rail bar. Persephone looked up at her. Her face was a little flushed, based on the slight warmth on her chest. “Minwthe,” she said in a muffled voice. “How long does this-?”
“Estimated Time of Arrival: 1 hour and 40 minutes.”
Persephone sighed heavily. Minthe smirked, resting her free hand on the pink goddess’ head. “Doesn’t seem all that fun when you’re here, huh?”
~~~
The two beings stepped into Underworld Corp’s locker room. Used after working out in the company’s gym or pool, it was handy for changing before and after work. It was empty, leaving them with enough space to change with privacy.
Despite this, Persephone opened up a locker two or three away from Minthe’s. The water nymph side eyed her. She had spent enough time with the chatty goddess. Didn’t she deserve her own space? Besides, she didn’t need her as a distraction from…changing.
Minthe rolled her eyes at her own inane reasoning, opening her locker. She could at least use that for a semblance of privacy.
She opened her duffel and pulled out her work clothes. A black sleeveless turtleneck, matching wide legged pants, and black pumps. Minthe also took out a lace, strapless bra. She couldn’t keep her sports bra on; didn’t go at all with her outfit.
A stray thought crossed her mind: what kind of bras did Persephone wear?
Her face scrunched up. What kind of stupid question was that? Sure, some of Persephone’s outfits did have care. Didn’t mean she cared about bras in the slightest. She probably didn’t even wear matching underwear.
Of course, it’d be dumb and ridiculous to check.
Obviously. Completely absurd.
Minthe glanced over to Persephone.
She had already taken off her pants, revealing… boxers? Her eyes widen slightly, before watching Persephone take her top off.
She went bug eyed, a sudden orange blush appearing on her face. Minthe quickly looked away.
Why were her boobs so big?!
She…"noticed them” while on the train, but she didn’t want to. Is that why Hades was so interested in her? Because she was curvy and cheerful and kind and-
Minthe shook her head and focused back on her clothes. Not before looking down at her own chest. With a sigh, she took off her sports bra.
She slipped on her strapless bra and ruffled through her bag. After applying deodorant, she took off her pants. Minthe shoved her yoga clothes into her duffel and grabbed her turtleneck. She looked up briefly,
To Persephone staring right at her.
She jerked up, flimsily covering herself with her top. “Can I help you? ”
The pink goddess gasped. “Sorry! I-”
She looked away, raising her hand up to block the corner of her eye. “I like your bra! It’s very fancy and pretty!”
Minthe looked down again. “Uh…thanks, I guess.” She soon put on her top and grabbed her pants. “You know, you could wear this stuff too.”
Persephone giggled, putting on a white off the shoulder sweater. “Oh, I could never pull it off! I’m not as…confident as you.”
Minthe stopped. Did she…hear that right?
She furrowed her eyebrows. “You think I’m confident?”
“Duh!” She slipped on a matching white skirt. “You’re confident, independent, and do whatever you want! You don’t have to listen to anybody.”
Persephone raised her hands close to her chest. “It’s like you have this “Don’t mess with me” energy all the time! I-” She looked down at her feet, fidgeting with her hands. “I could never be like that.”
She stared at her with a blank face.
Oh Gods. This couldn’t be happening.
There was no way Persephone, with Hades in the palm of her hand, looked up to her. The literal personification of a dumpster fire. The shrieking, gold digging, mud sucking nymph tossed aside for the next best thing.
Meanwhile, she was a goddess. Everyone was obligated to love her, no matter what. It didn’t get any better from that.
…Was something seriously wrong with her?
She sighed, putting on her pants. “Look, maybe you’re not giving yourself enough credit. You could be as… self assured as me.”
“How?” Persephone’s eyes moved to Minthe.
“Gods, do I have to spell it out?” Minthe sat down on the bench, putting on her pumps. “Do whatever you want! If someone asks you to do something, and you don’t want to, tell them to fuck off. If they keep trying, bite their head off! Who cares!”
She scoffed. “You’re a goddess, for crying out loud. That’s gotta mean something.”
Persephone went quiet.
Minthe gathered her things, putting her duffel away. She spritzed on perfume, the fragrant woody scent filling the locker room. After putting on her makeup, Minthe got up to leave.
She opened the door and started to go through, until she heard a faint murmur:
“... what if that’s a bad thing…”
Minthe froze.
Then, she walked out.
~~~
The workday went as usual. Minthe was stuck at her desk for most of it, and Hades didn’t try to talk to her. In her eyes, that was an improvement.
She rubbed her eyes at her laptop, finishing off another email. Besides the occasional background chatter in the office, she ignored most of-
“Hello Persephone.”
Minthe’s skin went cold, her fins focusing on his voice.
“Oh…Hi Hades.”
Minthe arched an eyebrow. Huh. She sounded more…low key than before.
“I simply wanted to check in and see how you’re doing.” He paused. “What a lovely brooch you’re wearing!”
“Ah, thank you!”
Minthe let a small smile slip. There she was.
“It was a gift from my mama. I love how it looks! It’s definitely my style…sorry about the comb. I can’t wear it cause…you know-”
Hades chuckled, a bit strained. “My mistake. Well, it might be handy if you ever grow out your hair.”
Persephone giggled, pouring throughout the office. It radiated to Minthe and filled her whole heart.
“I’d never do that! Whenever I’m really sad, my hair gets longer. It must be a sign!”
“I suppose that makes sense…so, I’m scheduled to attend a meeting later today. I think it’d be helpful to your internship if you-”
She sucked her teeth in. “Sorry…I don’t think I can!”
Minthe burst out laughing, her hand flying to her mouth.
“I need to catch up on work. I don’t want to fall behind!”
He chuckles again. “Ah, alright. Your dedication to the company is quite admirable. Carry on.”
Minthe listens as Hades walks off, his steps growing quieter. She laughed again, kicking her feet.
Once she calmed herself, she dove into her thoughts. Admittedly, it shocked her how soon Persephone took her advice. That never happened with her. It felt…good?
And…he gave her a comb.
Her grip fastened for a moment.
Typical. Can’t he bother to switch it up between partners? A necklace, bracelet, anything else? Though, she wasn’t wearing it. For obvious reasons.
And she also didn’t accept his invitation. That…meant something.
She let go, her hand falling to her desk.
It had to…right?
~~~
To Minthe’s surprise, Thanatos’ next lead wasn’t connected to the Underworld. In fact, they didn’t even touch it at all.
Once Thetis got off work, the three of them went to Olympus’ more private facilities. Personally reserved for older, larger gods who couldn’t easily be contained.
There were rules for visitation: An offering wasn’t necessary, but recommended. Treat them with the utmost respect. And traditional Greek clothing only.
Thanatos tugged the curtain to the facility’s changing room. “You done yet, Minthe?”
She groaned. “Ugh, do I have to wear this? I look ancient. ”
“It’s not our fault you don’t have traditional Greek garb.” Thetis crossed her arms. “Have you never been in a courtroom before? Given offerings?”
Minthe’s mind flew back to her younger years. Hearing classmates and “friends” talk about giving offerings with their parents. Recounting their parent’s time in court, filled with drama (and occasional boredom). Ranting about the wonderful peplos their mothers gave them, golden headpieces to match.
These were things parents taught their kids, so they’d be prepared for adulthood.
Not every parent.
“No Thetis,” she said bitterly. “Guess I’m real unlucky.”
“At least you have a chance now! Helios is kinda boring; that’s the case for a lot of these “bigger” gods. Keep to themselves, kinda cryptic-”
Minthe stepped out of the changing room. Thanatos and Thetis walked back and observed her. Dripped in reds, her attire matched her typical dark color scheme.
It was also too short for someone as tall as her. Her chiton, with strips of fabric decorating her shoulders, barely covered her butt. Fortunately, the long robe saved it. Connected at her shoulders, it flowed down her back and fell to her ankles.
The final touches, dark red cuff bracelets and tall gladiator sandals, tied it all together. Except for-
“You’re not gonna wear the little branch headpiece?” Thetis’ eyes turned weepy, cupping her fist and resting it under her chin.
“No.”
“If you try it on, maybe-”
Minthe pushed the headpiece into Thetis’ chest. Her gaze went to their surroundings. Besides the changing room and long line of doors, its vast liminal space unnerved her. Filled with whites and grays, it was far from what she expected.
“Can’t he stay in a more… welcoming place?”
Thetis shoved the headpiece into her bag. “When you’re 50 ft tall, you take what you get. Besides, who needs that when you have all this privacy? I thought you’d relate!”
“Ha ha.” Minthe looked over her two friends: Thanatos’ attire wasn’t anything too special. A dark gray chiton with a subtle blue tint, fastened at his left shoulder.
Thetis’ peplos cascaded down in light blues, fading to white at the end. Her hair was pulled in an intricate updo, accessorized with a white banded tulip seashell. A light veil covered her head and shoulders, sparkling under the facility’s lights.
The blue water nymph furrowed her eyebrows at Thanatos. “Ok, we have to get rid of that.”
Thanatos scrunched his nose. “Get rid of what? ”
She pointed to his man bun.
He rolled his eyes. “C’mon Thetis, you think Helios cares about-”
Not letting him finish, Thetis yanked the hairband off. She quickly ruffled his hair and blocked any swats he threw her way.
She finally stopped and pulled out her phone, placing it in front of him. “There! Doesn’t this look way better?”
Thanatos stared blankly into the screen. His light gray hair fell messily on his shoulders, blocking parts of his forehead. He immediately frowned. “I look like my brother.”
“You’ll get over it!” She patted his shoulder with a smile.
Minthe walked past them both, following the line of doors. “So, which one is Helios in?”
“Let’s see…” Thetis pulled out a card from her cleavage. “It should be 104. We need to keep walking until we find it!”
“Awesome.” Minthe twirled a finger and continued walking down.
After a few minutes of walking, the three arrived at Helios’ door. Next to it was a small card swiper. Thetis hovered the card over it. With a quiet click, the door cracked open.
Walking in revealed a long bridge with a wider platform near the end. Guardrails protected them from the inky, black darkness below.
With every step, simmering heat radiated all around them. Understandably so; Helios was a sun god. Minthe fanned herself. “Gods, how do people live with this all the time?”
Thetis sighed. “Minthe, you went to Olympus earlier today. You know what the sun feels like.”
“Ok one, not by choice. And two, I still hate the heat. I just don’t complain about it as much.”
“But you complain about everything else so well!” Thanatos laughed to himself, before letting out a groan. “Gaia this is terrible.”
“Oh my Gods, you two are babies.” Thetis raced past both of them. “Let’s get this over with so we can-”
" Yes, lets.”
Helios’ voice boomed throughout the room, a tremble shaking the bridge. Thanatos and Minthe followed Thetis to the platform.
They all stood back to fully see him: his brightness dimly lit up the space, faintly glowing around him. Even sitting down, knees tucked to his chest, he towered over them. His hair shined down his shoulders and back, covering his off white chiton.
“Well?” Helios lowered his head towards them.
Thetis pushed Thanatos, making him stumble forward. After shooting her a dirty look, he started. “Uh…hi.”
He flew up to Helios’ eye level. “This shouldn’t take long. I have a few questions about the state of the Mortal Realm.”
“In regards to what?” Helios arched an eyebrow.
“I’ve noticed the amount of souls has recently doubled. I also heard from Charon that it's especially backed up in Acheron. Hundreds of souls with nowhere to go.”
“And you think a catastrophic event is the cause. A famine, or some sort of natural disaster?”
Thanatos nodded. “I plan on visiting Acheron for verbal accounts. I just want to make sure it wasn’t too serious.”
The sun god chuckled, a coy smile appearing on his face. “Oh, if only.”
Minthe furrowed her eyebrows. She looked back at Thetis, who simply shrugged. Thanatos looked down at both of them, then Helios. “...If only what?”
“Famines and natural disasters are far easier to explain. No one is at fault. Except for poor preparation on the mortal’s side.” Helios nodded at Thanatos. “Also easier to process.”
“So…you’re saying it was serious.”
“It was many things. A boiling point, a tragedy. An event that could’ve been avoided. A-”
“Hey!” Minthe cried out.
The two gods stopped, focusing on Minthe. Thetis side eyed her, grabbing her forearm. “Girl, what are you doing? ”
Minthe pulled her away. “Ok, he’s clearly being self-aggrandizing. And I’m sweating my ass off, so-” She gestured to Helios. “If you could get to the point, that’d be great!”
Helios stared at her for a moment.
He laughed. His eyes went back to Thanatos. “She’s very direct.”
“I’m right here!”
The Sun God relaxed his shoulders. “Alright, I'll tell you. But I can’t make it easy.”
Minthe rolled her eyes. “You can’t, or you won’t?”
Thetis shoulder checked her.
“Won’t. You newer beings need something to do.” Helios cleared his throat. “On a warm summer day, a being of great power and youthful spirit emerged. Angered by five mortal men, they slashed them whole. All except one.
This being befell on a quaint village, chasing the last of their prey. They cracked and shook through the earth, leaving venomous flora in their wake.
They left the poor village in tatters, tearing mortals and dwellings alike. To this day, only a hundred remain.”
Minthe’s eyes widened, soon covering her mouth. She drew her eyebrows together in thought. lowering her head.
“You’re not telling us who?” Thanatos said.
“You three look like a smart bunch. I’m sure you’ll figure it out.”
~~~
While Thetis and Thanatos walked ahead, Minthe trailed back quietly. Her steps were slow, a bit unsteady as she retreated into herself.
“Well, that was vague as fuck.” Thetis huffed, wiping the sweat off her brow. “You know what it reminds me of?”
Thanatos looked over to her. “An act of wrath?”
“Yep!” Thetis slapped his shoulder. “I’ve seen enough from Zeus and Hera to recognize ‘em. They usually kill a… inconspicuous amount. This feels like sloppy work.”
Helios said a lot in his speech. But two phrases kept echoing in her mind: “youthful spirit” and “venomous flora.”
“It’d explain the increase in souls.” Thanatos opened his phone and started typing. “With so many deaths, I’m sure mortals were injured. Some of them might still be dying slowly.”
“You know, these things need to be reported. Acts like this affect more than mortals.”
Minthe didn’t know much about the inner workings of gods and goddesses. Despite hanging around them, she was never given a chance to learn more. Or allowed.
“There’s like, a whole ecosystem and everything! And Zeus never likes stuff hidden from him.”
What she did know, there were some beings who controlled plants. Flower and Tree nymphs could turn themselves into their given plant. Only for a short amount of time. Anything different or more intensive needed to be “blessed by Gaia,” or whatever.
That’s the most she knew, learning from coworkers at her old jobs. They never produced plants on their own, though. That was all done by Demeter, who housed and took care of them before they left.
Demeter was powerful, from what she heard. She led harvests for mortals and managed the seasons; it’d make sense if she did it. But “youthful spirit” didn’t exactly… match her demeanor.
Her eyebrows furrowed deeper.
But she knew someone who did.
Thanatos looked behind him, eyeing her. “Hey, Minthe?”
Her head shot up from her thoughts. She focused on him, eyebrows still furrowed. “Uh…yeah?”
“You’ve been real quiet since we left, and-”
“And you’re only like that when you’re thinking too hard.” Thetis injected. “Or when you’re moody, or-”
Minthe raised her hand, stopping Thetis’. “Do you two have any idea who he’s talking about?”
Thanatos shook his head. Thetis thought for a second. “With that much power, it’d have to be an experienced being. No one else could pull it off.”
“But you just said it was sloppy, right?” Minthe walked closer to them.
“Oh, so you were listening-”
“What if they didn’t know what they were doing?”
Thanatos’ eyes went to hers. “Like…it was their first time.”
She pointed right at him. “ Exactly. And who do we know that can control plants?”
“Only Demeter can.” Thanatos looked back at his phone. “And she’s in the Mortal Realm, so-”
“No…there’s someone else.” Minthe’s eyes darted to Thetis. “Remember what happened this morning?"
Thetis squinted.
Her eyes popped open, rushing over to Minthe. “Oh! You don’t think-? "
In all honesty, Minthe didn’t know what to think.
Persephone had to be one of the most confusing beings she ever met. First, she was a pink nobody clinging onto Hades. Then, she was insufferably nice and sweet for no good reason. And now…
It… seemed completely unlike her. On the surface, Persephone was friendly to a fault. If no one noticed or looked too deeply, they wouldn’t suspect a thing.
But Minthe did.
She saw glimpses of a different being. Someone who wasn’t sweet and palatable 24/7. Who forced smiles and kindness, even if people walked all over her.
“... what if that’s a bad thing… ”
Who might’ve done it out of fear.
It was a lot to take in. And she didn’t know what to do …until she knew for sure.
“It’s the only lead that makes sense. It’s got to be worth a shot.”
Notes:
Hi guys! I hope you enjoy the chapter! Next chapter will be posted on Sept 22nd! Here's my tumblr if you want to ask questions: Lore Olympus/PomengranMints
And here's the Q&A! Leaving it up for a little longer, so ask something if you can:
PomengranMints Q&A
Chapter 12: PomengranMints:Q&A!
Notes:
Hi guys! I'm really sorry for this, but I'm postponing releasing the next chapter until Sept 29th. I'm still working on it, though I hope to have it finished sometime next week! Between school and everything, it's gotten a little tricky finding time to write. In the meantime, here's the questions from the Q&A! I hope you guys at least enjoy this:
Chapter Text
- What inspired you to make PomengrantMints?
- This’ll be a pretty long one to start with, but I promise the others won’t be! I was inspired when I first got back into LO. It was through the Phyric and Victoria videos, where they were covering large chunks of LO. I hadn’t read the series since S2, so refreshing and catching up made me think about it more.
- I have a tendency to pull a “Korrasami” a lot, where I pair two female love rivals together and throw the male love interest in the trash! As I caught up and (re)learned about Minthe and Persephone, the thought of them being together really interested me. In my eyes, they’re perfect foils for each other and represent (in some ways) what the other wants in their life. At the time (and even now), there weren’t completed Minthephone stories. And a lot of the cute art was from earlier seasons. I wanted to write a story where their relationships is the core focus, while also including more female relationships in general. And to make it as gay as possible
- Will Persephone have another goddess form, like in the og comic?
- Persephone does have her “Dread Queen” form, which happens during her AOW. But besides that, she won’t get another super powerful goddess form (like in her fight with Kronos). For this type of story, it’s not needed!
- What kinda sapphic are the girls?
- Minthe is Bisexual, but only realizes this through Persephone. She’s only dated guys and has ignored her glimpses of interest in women. She’s probably kissed a few girls, but never thought deeply about it. She won’t come to terms with this until later in the story, though.
- Persephone is still figuring out how she'd label herself, so she'd probably call herself sapphic! She hasn’t fully realized this yet, but she’ll walk around the subject during the story! However, Persephone is aware and comfortable LGBT+ people; Demeter’s land is crawling with them. She just hasn’t considered it an option for herself until now.
- Who's your favorite character to write?
- This is such a hard question; I have equal fun writing Persephone and Minthe! I love fleshing them out and giving them the internal dialogue they needed in the original (Persephone more than Minthe). But I think while Persephone is very fun and easy to write (I love kind hearted characters who are too sweet for their own good), Minthe is my favorite.
- I’m balancing a lot of things with her (her low self worth, her anxiety/difficulty forming connections,
how she has undiagnosed BPD in this story) which makes her a slightly more engaging character writing wise.
- Any particular scenes that are the most important to you/to the story/character?
- I feel like all the really important scenes haven’t happened yet! But in general, any scene where Persephone and Minthe connect/truly know the other feels important to me. I like the scene where they first meet in Underworld Corp, because of how drastically their perspectives are (love/admiration at first sight for Persephone, while Minthe does not like her). I want to show them forming a deep bond and understanding of each other, to the point where others are surprised at their closeness.
- I love any scene where the female characters can interact! It’s my biggest hangup with the original LO, that I wanted to repair here. Artemis, Aetna, and Syke are Persephone’s closest friends (sans Minthe) who I try to give time to. I also love Hestia and Athena; it’s why I added their text messages at the end of Chapter 7. I want Persephone to have other older adults she can turn to for advice!
- Are there any easter eggs/fun facts you can tell the readers?
- The cereal box line in Chapter 2 was taken from Phyric and Victoria’s videos
- When I was first writing out the story, I told myself I wouldn’t start posting until Minthe appeared again in LO. She hadn’t been seen since her solo chapter in the Mortal Realm at the time, and I knew it’d give me time to build a buffer. So when she made a small appearance in the background of S3, I took it and ran with it!
- The cover art I use for PomengranMints (which I know it’s misspelled, please don’t notice-) is based off the Nana anime cover art! I watched the anime while planning PM, and it was heavily influenced as a result (Persephone’s flip phone, the switching perspectives between Minthe and Persephone, Persephone’s whole attitude).
- Were there any parts of the original story/character you removed/changed completely?
- What I include and remove is based on a few things, but the main question I ask is “Does this help Persephone and/or Minthe as characters?” As a result, things get cut and pasted around a lot in the story.
- Instead of Hades, Minthe is placed in a lot of the original Hades/Persephone moments. Hades, as the character he was in LO, is basically not there. He’s “important” for Persephone’s growth and development, but I’m not interested in focusing on them as a pairing. It’s also why I broke up him and Minthe at the beginning, so 1) he technically has more leeway/isn’t cheating at least and 2) I could push him off more. I’d rather highlight him on his own, if I need to. It also gives Minthe more scenes to shine, and builds her relationship with Persephone.
- I also chopped off many character’s screen time, to keep things simple plot wise. Instead of Eros, Artemis takes Persephone shopping. This is so we can see their dynamic and them hanging out more. I also just, don’t care about Eros at all. Eros and Psyche’s thing seems very pointless in hindsight, and I also don’t like Psyche representation wise. You won’t be seeing them at all! However, just because I cut their screen time doesn’t mean they won’t show up. There will be camoes!
- I replaced Tori/Alex with Euryale, because I also don’t care about them as characters. I still wanted to keep the paparazzi conflict, but I made her as a personification for it. I also think it’s more interesting seeing women perpetuating this invasiveness. Sometimes women don’t support other women!
- I cannot explain in detail the amount of mental stress I had over the SA plotline. There are crossed out sections still in my doc for PM, factoring this in. Ultimately, I didn’t want to deal with it or Apollo in this story. Apollo is literally just a guy, who won’t get nearly as much focus compared to LO. I’m very happy with this decision. It gave me more time to flesh out the paparazzi conflict, which puts a “similar” stressor for Persephone.
- Which subcultures (aesthetics) each character prefers?
- I’m not going to do all of the characters, but I’ll focus on Minthe and Persephone! Minthe’s aesthetic is very easy to grasp: dark colors and moody vibes, a lot of reds and blacks. Very sleek and modern. Fur coats, leather jackets, gold jewelry. Never cooks, always buys takeout. Feels she needs to put on makeup before she leaves her apartment. Would suffer in high heels if it meant keeping the outfit together.
- Persephone’s is filled with flora and fauna. Whites, greens, and pastels. Embroidered flowers and patterns, leans to Bo-Ho. Ideally thrifts most of her clothes. Light breezy clothes are her friends, but she does love denim. The type to pick up litter and recycle. Loves cooking home cooked meals, especially for big groups. I think while Persephone will mature and grow through the story, her core ideals will stay the same. She might take some things from Minthe and others, but it’s still her. She loves wearing white.
- Heyo!! My question of the hour is to ask if ALL of Persephone's children are still going to exist in Pomagranant mint and if they do will they be created under different circumstances and have different appearances?
- For now, the answer is no! I think as it stands, children won’t be a concern/want for Persephone for a long, long time. I do think Persephone will have kids, but completely original and not based on her kids in Greek Myth.
- I do have plans to integrate Melinoe, but Persephone will not be a part of it at all! Much more centered on Hades, if I ever do a story focusing on him.
- Is it okay to make fanedits and fan art of your rewrite?
- Please do! I’d love to see fanart and fanedits of PomengranMints, if y’all have the time!

Chapter Text
“And she’s like, so fashionable! She always wears these cute gold earrings that dangle-”
“Uh huh. ” Artemis kept her focus in the kitchen and took a jug out from the cabinet. She placed it in the island countertop’s sink. Party snacks, lemons, and a squeezer littered the countertop’s space.
Meanwhile, Persephone sat on the living couch. With notebooks and textbooks placed around her, she typed away on a bulky pink laptop. “I can’t wait to get my ears pierced! I want to wear ones like her!”
She sighed wistfully. “And she wears high heels…I wish I could wear heels-”
“Mm hmm. ” Artemis turned on the faucet, furrowing her eyebrows.
“She’s so…Gaia, I can’t even explain it.” Persephone giggled, reaching over to a dark pink notebook. “ She’s like the ultimate modern woman, you know? ”
“Ok- ” Artemis stepped out of the kitchen and into the living room. “Persephone, I’m… happy you’re having a great time at your internship.” She leaned over the couch. “I’m especially glad you haven’t mentioned Hades at all!”
Persephone’s demeanor faltered. Why would she mention Hades? She hadn’t talked to him since she turned him down. And she actually got her work done today! It made her feel accomplished.
“But can’t you help me instead of talking about the girl you work with?” Artemis eyed Persephone’s laptop. “Did your mom get that for you?”
Persephone grinned tightly, hiding her annoyance. “No, I bought this on campus. They have a whole tech lab and everything! The guy helping me out said it was good for beginners.
“You’re working on homework?”
“Not exactly…” She pulled the laptop closer to Artemis. “A while back, my advisor suggested researching the Underworld's climate. You know, to see what plants could grow there!”
“Uh huh…”
“So, I looked for weather reports to get a general idea. And articles about the Underworld’s agriculture and how they get fruits and veggies. It’s through imports, which I figured was the case. No one’s ever successfully grown plants!”
“That’s because of the death-”
“But somebody must’ve tried!” Persephone grabbed her notebook and flipped through the pages. “I couldn’t find anything yet, so I’m trying to narrow down which plants work best in colder climates. Carrots, spinach-”
Artemis wrinkled her nose. “And…you’re doing this for fun?”
She nodded excitedly.
Artemis’ eyes lingered at Persephone’s setup. She shrugged and got off the couch. “At least take a break to help. This ‘outdoor movie night’ was your idea, after all.”
The pink goddess followed Artemis into the kitchen. She grabbed a small jar from another cabinet, and placed herself near the lemons and squeezer. “Cause we need to hang out more! You’re all so busy with work, it’s hard to find times where we can all have fun.”
“That’s just adulthood.” Artemis switched on the water filter and filled the jug. “Couldn’t you invite your college friends, instead of Apollo and Hermes?”
Persephone sighed as she started squeezing lemons. “They’re both busy. And we only have one class together, so it’s hard to see them on campus sometimes…”
Gaia, did it need to be like this? Was this really “adulthood?” In the Mortal Realm, everyone was so tight-knit it frustrated her. Sneaking off became routine for her, finding her own space and alone time.
But this couldn’t be the only way. There had to be a balance.
“Besides, what’s so bad about them? Hermes is fine and Apollo-”
“Will hit on you. ” Artemis slammed the full jug on the counter, water spilling out. “You saw how he was last time! So smirk-y and-” She huffed, blowing hair out her face. “You know he tried sitting next to you, right?”
“...And that’s a crime?” She grabbed another lemon.
The black goddess groaned and rolled her eyes. “Kore, I know you probably don’t get this because you’re really sweet and… inexperienced- ”
She grinned again, pushing down the anger bubbling in her chest. “I-”
“But my brother is bad news! He’s been in 7 relationships, and they were all trainwrecks!” Artemis walked closer to Persephone, gently touching her shoulder. Her voice softened. “I don’t want you getting swooped in with his smooth talk and-”
“Artemis. ”
Persephone laid her own hand on top of Artemis’. She tilted her head, her tone becoming sweeter. “I can tell when someone flirts with me. After all, I’ve dated before.”
Artemis stared back at her. She furrowed her eyebrows, her nose flaring slightly. “You’ve… what?”
“Also…” Her smile strained against her cheeks. “Apollo? Not my type.”
She dropped the lemon squeezer. If Artemis wanted to help her out, she could start there. Persephone walked over to the sink as she kept staring at her.
She turned on the facet and washed her hands, making sure to turn off the filter. Her eyes stayed on the sink and avoided Artemis’ gaze. A small beat of silence passed between them.
Persephone turned the faucet off. “Yes, Arty?”
Artemis blinked a few times, snapping out of her trance. “Ok one, don’t call me that. Second-” She grabbed the squeezer and a lemon, gesturing briefly. “When did you have time to date? With who?”
“My mom didn’t make it easy.” She chuckled as she moved to the snacks. “When I was younger, she made me take nymphs wherever I went. After a while, we got sick of it.”
Persephone opened a family size bag of pita chips. “So! We’d wander around until the coast was clear. They’d leave me to do whatever I wanted! I mostly flew around, climbed trees, explored nearby mountains-”
“Completely normal goddess stuff-”
“And one day…I met them. In the mountains. We started out as friends, until I proudly made the first move.” She sighed wistfully. “We’d talk a lot about what we wanted to do. Out of the Mortal Realm. It was nice…”
For a moment, Persephone’s face grew sullen. She perked up her face and poured the chips into a bowl. “But it didn’t work out.”
Artemis’ eyes softened again. “Why?”
“Um…”
She debated on whether to tell Artemis. It felt important, but it wasn’t her business to give. And outing someone was obviously rude. Persephone made a note to see Anthi, when she wasn’t busy.
Persephone shrugged. “I don’t know. We’re still friends though! And my mom never found out, so-”
“You didn’t get in trouble.” She sighed again. “Good for you, but you know having guys around would-”
“Make my mom freak.” Persephone finished for her. She grabbed the jug and walked over the fridge, right behind Artemis. “But if I’m not interested in the guys, it doesn’t matter!” She opened it.
Artemis paused and pursed her lips. “...Not even Hermes?”
The pink goddess’ face scrunched her nose. “Ugh, no! We’re just friends.”
Artemis went silent. Persephone put the jug in the fridge. “Anyway, I’m gonna move my stuff and start setting up in the back. Call me if you need help, ok?” She tapped the black goddess’ shoulder.
“Sure…”
Persephone started to leave.
“Kore?” Artemis called out.
“Hm?”
“Uh…” Artemis bit her lip, only to shake her head. “Nevermind. ”
~~~
The bright fairy lights twinkled along the backyard’s bushes, contrasting Olympus’ dark violet sky. Chips, lemonade, and pizza sat on two wooden picnic tables, close to the house’s sliding door.
Plush white blankets and pillows laid on the soft dark green grass, right in front of a thick white sheet. The ends were tied to two long wooden sticks, securing the screen in place.
Persephone smiled as she opened the sliding door for their guests. “Ta da! Doesn’t this look great?”
Hermes plopped down on the closest bench and set his bag down. “Looks exactly like the ones in the Mortal Realm. ‘Cept this time we’re watching instead of acting out plays!” He grabbed a slice of pizza.
Apollo whistled while he walked into the backyard. He shoved his hands into his pockets. “For something last minute, it’s pretty cute!” He flashed a grin at Persephone.
“Yeah.” Artemis bumped Apollo’s shoulder and marched over to the CD projector. “Which one of you brought the movie?”
‘Oh! Uh-” Hermes ruffled through his bag. He pulled the disc cover out and threw it to Artemis. She caught it.
“Seven Against Thebes? This is 2 hours long! What if we don’t have time for our movie?”
“Then it’s a blessing!” Apollo laughed boisterously, pouring some lemonade. “But don’t worry Arty! I’m sure we’ll fit it in.”
“Fit it in.” Artemis mimicked. With a scoff, she slipped the disc into the slot. Persephone sat down on the blanket and laid against the pillows.
Apollo moved over and sat next to her. She jumped a bit and inched away. “Oh! I thought you’d sit next to Hermes?”
She turned to look at him. Hermes shrugged sheepishly. Her eyes briefly glanced at Artemis, who was burning holes in the back of Apollo’s head.
“I’m always hanging around him. But we haven’t talked yet!” Apollo flashed another mina-worth smile. “I want know more about you~”
Persephone turned back to him. “Isn’t talking kind of… not allowed during a movie?”
He waved her off. “Eh! As long as we’re quiet enough, it should be-”
THWACK!
Apollo’s hand flew to the side of his head. He glared at Artemis, who simply glared back and while holding a throw pillow.
The pink goddess giggled, taking Apollo’s attention off of Artemis. He pouted. “C’mon Persephone! I thought you’d make Arty more fun.”
She tilted her head, an innocent smile on her lips. “What do you mean? I think she’s fun already!”
Artemis chuckled. She sat down to Apollo’s right as the movie began.
Soon, Hermes came over with pizza and drinks. He passed them to Artemis and Apollo, while giving Persephone a plate of pita chips. “Kinda sucks you can’t eat the pizza, Kore. Artemis really dropped the ball there-”
“She said it was fine!” The black goddess flushed.
Persephone nodded. “And baked tomato and bread doesn’t sound too appealing…”
The group quieted down as the first scene started. At first, Persephone’s eyes stayed locked onto the projection. It was about Eteocles and Polynices. Two brothers whose conflict sparks a war on Thebes. There was something about seven battles or gates, but she was having a hard time following.
Between the action and bloodshed, it made Persephone’s skin crawl. She grabbed her knees and pulled them to her chest. Did beings enjoy this? The constant violence, the screams…
She looked over to the others. Apollo and Hermes were idly watching, though the white god did snatch a glance at her. She smiled again and went to Artemis.
The black goddess seemed engrossed at the movie. She watched with furrowed eyebrows, following the attacks. Go figure; the goddess of the hunt liked action.
Persephone’s shoulder’s jumped at the most recent scream. It rang through the speakers and into the night sky. She closed her eyes.
It’s just a movie, she thought to herself.
She felt the ground rumbling underneath her. Bits of stone and gravel dug into her feet, ichor dripping with every step.
It’s not real.
Wrecked buildings littered the streets, leaving bodies and blood in its wake. Thorny vines crept inside them, nightingales caught in their throats and mouths.
None of this is-
“H-HELP!”
Cold, dark green eyes focused on him. A mortal boy. Stumbling stupidly further into his village, begging for help. His body scraped and bruised from thorns, blood trailing down his weak, wobbly legs.
She stared at him, eyes unblinking. She took another step forward.
The streets rumbled again, thick vines shooting out wildly. She ignored the jolting, mortal cries as the vines cut through them. It didn’t matter. Silent fury centered her mind, focusing on her goal. It’d be worth it, if she could get-
Persephone’s eyes shot open.
She stood up mindlessly, her shadow blocking parts of the projection. Her fingers ran through her hair, catching marigolds and purple hyacinths.
The others gazed at her. Persephone looked back timidly. Artemis’ and Hermes’ faces wrinkled with worry. Apollo’s eyes went to her hair and widened, quickly moving to the ground.
“Uh…” Artemis started. “Are you-?”
She plastered a bright grin on her face. “I’m fine! I’m gonna head inside for a bit, ok?”
Before Artemis could answer, Persephone rushed inside. Her body collapsed on the couch, letting its softness take over. Her hands gripped the flowers and, readying herself, tore them out.
She leaned forward and piled them next to her feet. Suddenly, she raised her eyebrows. Bits of vines and thorns wrapped around her ankles, scratching her skin.
Persephone let out a big huff, covering her face and slamming back into the couch. How long was this going to happen? She could take the flowers. Was it annoying to have a physical representation of your emotions right on your head? Yes.
But beings liked flowers. And no one knew what they meant, most of the time. But thorns and vines…those were dangerous. They hurt people.
Tears welled in her eyes.
… She hurt people. So, so many.
She deserved this, right? Here she was, hiding away. Filling her life with school and work and distractions. While everyone else cleaned her mess.
Being tormented felt like a small price to pay… too small.
“Kore?”
Persephone snorted and wiped her eyes. She looked over to the glass screen door. Hermes waved a folder in her direction and walked towards her.
“Hey Hermes…” She sniffled. “Sorry, I don’t know what’s with me these days. But I’m ok!”
He sat next to her, placing the folder on his lap. “You sure? I know Apollo can be… a lot, but-”
“Oh!” She waved her hands in front of her. “It’s not him. I barely notice him half the time…”
Hermes snickered, before devolving into full laughter. He leaned over and clutched his stomach. Persephone giggled back.
“W-well! That’s good to hear! ” He settled down and rested his arm on her shoulder. “ Sooo , what’s the problem? You’re normally more…”
“Happy?” Persephone lowered her eyes. “I guess…I’m still adjusting to Olympus. Everything felt so easy in the Mortal Realm…” They went back to Hermes. “You think leaving was a mistake?”
Hermes shook his head, pulling Persephone into a side hug. “ No! I mean-” He thinks for a second. “Remember when we’d go swimming? Near that meadow you found?”
She nodded.
“You’d ask me so many questions about life up here!” Hermes rubbed the back of his neck. “I’ve lived here for years, and I never appreciated it like you did. Beings tend to get burned out pretty fast.”
He looked back, a determined look on his face. “But I won’t let that happen to you! You’ve wanted this for so long, right?”
Persephone pressed her lips together. “Ever since I was 2,000…”
“And you wanted a challenge? Compared to the Mortal Realm?”
“Yeah…” She perked up a little, straightening her back. “Yeah! There’s so many things I can learn to help the Mortal Realm! I want my work to mean something.”
“There you go!”
Persephone wrapped her arms around Hermes. The two beings hugged each other, the faint sound of the movie playing in the background.
Her eyes looked down at the folder. “What’s that?”
For a moment, she felt him stiffen in her arms.
Hermes’ voice pitched up an octave. “Oh, it’s nothing! It’s uh, something I think you should have, but-”
Persephone let go and grabbed the folder. Her fingers pinched at its light green edges. “Should I open it now or-”
“No! ” He laughed nervously, shaking his head again. “Later! Look at it later!”
Her eyes darted between Hermes and the folder. After a moment, she shrugged. “Ok…I’ll go put this up. You go back and see if those two haven’t killed each other yet!.”
He soon got up. “Alrighty! We’ll be waiting!”
Persephone smiled again while Hermes went through the screen door. As she walked up the steps to her room, her eyes never left the folder.
She quickly shut her bedroom door. Flushed with pinks and potted plants, it fit her to a T. She took a break, and opened the folder:
XXXXX SOUL REPORT XXXXX
On this day, 10,268 souls were taken. Approximately 3,102 of those souls came from a sudden Act Of Wrath, led by the goddess Persephone. The following is a detailed account of what happened on this date…
Persephone tried to read more, but the trembling from her hands made it difficult. She closed it, placed it on her desk, and went back down.
~~~
“I told you we wouldn’t have time for both!”
Artemis wagged a finger in Apollo’s face. They were all crowded at the front door, with Apollo’s hand right on the doorknob.
He scoffed, using his free hand to smack it away. “Arty, it’s not a big deal! We can watch it next-”
She immediately huffed.
Apollo rolled his eyes. “Arty, don’t be like-”
Artemis huffed again.
"OK, I’m leaving now!” Apollo opened the door. He quickly winked at Persephone and stepped out. Hermes gave her a short hug and followed him out.
Persephone looked over to Artemis, still visibly annoyed. She inched closer to her. “Wanna watch the movie you picked out?”
She sighed deeply. “... Yes.”
The two goddesses went back to the backyard. Artemis pulled out her movie, while Persephone sat on a nearby bench. She kicked her feet as she waited. “So…what’s the movie about? Is it interesting?”
“It’s supposedly about Medusa. But there’s definitely some… creative liberties?”
Persephone looked at her curiously. “Isn’t creativity good?”
“Yeah , but I’m 75% sure Medusa didn’t have a blind lesbian lover. There’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just-” She scratched her head. “They could’ve made it a random gorgon and called it a day, y’know? Nothing Medusa about it really.”
She popped the disc in and sat beside Persephone. “It feels disrespectful considering she’s dead and all. I think her sisters sold the rights for quick cash…”
“Wait-” The pink goddess furrowed her eyebrows. “If you didn’t like it, why did you-?”
Artemis looked off sheepishly. “I thought we could make fun of it…”
Persephone laughed, then focused on the movie.
After flying through Medusa’s origin in the first 10 minutes, the rest centering on her budding relationship with Polina. The stated blind lesbian lover, who aided in Medusa’s quest to fix the curse.
Persephone had an easier time getting invested. In the Mortal Realm, plays with romance caught her interest more than tragedies. Rare, considering everything felt like a tragedy.
And the actresses who played Medusa and Polina were… objectively gorgeous. Polina’s soft brown eyes complimented the gorgon’s piercing green ones. The human’s tanned, freckled hands always held Medusa’s jagged ones gently.
She watched them embrace one another. Bodies held tightly, swaying side by side. Persephone showed affection to (mostly) everyone she met. It felt natural to hold hands or hug people she thought fondly of.
This, however, was a different kind of fondness.
She’d seen it before, between dozens of nymphs in the Mortal Realm. But Persephone never considered it for herself. And she couldn’t figure out why. Not even now.
But Medusa and Polina leaned into their first kiss, something clicked. She could do this. She could be Polina, fingers tangled in another girl’s hands.
Persephone’s face blushed a soft orange. “Um…Artemis?”
“Yeah?” Artemis said, her eyes glued to her phone.
The pink goddess bit her lip. “H-have you ever… kissed a girl? ”
Immediately, she went wide eyed. She clicked off her phone, only to start fidgeting with it. “Um! I mean!” Artemis coughed and cleared her throat. “Why do you ask?”
Persephone’s head gestured to the projector.
Artemis glanced at it. “Oh-” She looked back on Persephone nervously. “Yeah…a few.”
The movie played between the brief silence.
Persephone leaned closer, fully staring at the black goddess. “... And?”
“What do you want me to say?” She threw up her hands. “I’ve kissed, dated, and had sex with them! And the dating was nice. But you know what I thought after the other stuff?”
“What?”
“I could’ve been hunting instead!”
The pink goddess snorted and covered her mouth. Artemis bonked Persephone's arms lightly. “Don’t laugh! It’s a perfectly valid feeling to have!”
Persephone settled down, letting out a deep sigh. “ I k-know… So you’re not into kissing and stuff?”
“Nope! I’m Ace!” Artemis crossed her arms. “Which makes me better than everyone, obviously-”
She chuckled again.
“I wouldn’t mind dating…I never have time, though. Relationships are hard work, something Apollo doesn’t understand.” She muttered under her breath, then focused back on Persephone. “I thought you’d be an expert.”
“Why?”
“Aren’t you… you know-
“Oh!” Her fingers pinched at her short, pink hair. “ I don’t know? I’m kinda figuring out now, so-”
Artemis scooted closer and rested her arm around Persephone. “Well, I’m always here if you need to talk. And you could ask other people too.”
Persephone smiled, answering her with a nod. Though her options were limited, a few came to mind. Aetna and Syke might know something, even if they haven’t dated before. Hestia and Athena were mature, so maybe them too. She could ask her mama, but…
Wait.
She could ask her.
That’d be perfect!

Chapter Text
“Alright class!” Professor Irida walked by the classroom’s screen projector. “Today, we’ll be discussing the Titanomachy.”
The whole class audibly groaned. Persephone looked around her. Syke seemed bored out of their mind, while Aetna switched into note-taking mood.
“You should all be familiar with this slice of history.” They gestured with the projector’s remote. “I know you’re sick of it, but you might learn something new!”
Persephone readied her laptop. Unlike most beings, who learned about the Titanomachy while at school, she didn’t. The nymphs taught her everything she needed to know. And she was grateful, but…
Every time she asked about this, no one would know anything. Well…they pretended to. It felt like a well kept secret she wasn’t a part of. Over the years, she learned bits and pieces. But never the full thing.
Professor Irida clicked the remote and moved to the next slide. “It all started when Uranus was overthrown by his son, Kronos. With Gaia’s help, he sliced Uranus and imprisoned him deep within Tartarus.” They looked over the class. “But can anyone tell us what Uranus did before his imprisonment?”
They were met with blank stares.
Irida shook their head and tapped their goat hooves. “C’mon now. The faster we get through this, the sooner you guys can leave-”
On cue, a hand flew up.
They pointed to the student: a cyclops with choppy, brown hair matching her dull eye. “Didn’t he like, curse his son to overthrow him or something?”
The professor nodded. “Exactly! And it’s the beginning of Kronos’ downfall. Now, how did Gaia contribute to Uranus’ imprisonment?”
“She uh…gave him a sickle?” Another student chimed in.
“Made the sickle, but still. Anything else?”
The class went silent again.
Irida paced around the classroom, redoing their messy ponytail. “I promise, this isn’t a hard question!”
Hesitantly, another student raised their hand. It was a dark blue water nymph. Their other hand fiddled with their shiny, reflective hair. “Well…no one really mentions her much. She’s important, but…”
“Few make a place for her in history. Right?”
Slowly, they nodded.
“It’s hard to do when you’re ‘not around’ often.” Professor Irida addressed the class again. “Today, Gaia exists more as an abstract concept. She’s there, but without a physical form to speak with. We can talk to Helios and Selene anytime, but not her. Why?”
“Umm…” The water nymph started. “Is her power…gone?”
Irida waved their hand slightly. “Not gone. Gaia is a very powerful goddess. She’s also a fertility deity. Anyone know what those are?”
This time, Syke answered. “Beings who give life to the Mortal Realm? Harvests, pregnancies?”
The professor smiled at Syke. “Yes! Fertility deities were, and are, important. We just don’t emphasize their importance in the present day. Their powers are amplified and, if not controlled, volatile.”
The pink goddess tilted her head. Her eyes stayed on the professor, her mind whirring away.
“With all that power and so many things to manage, a physical body ends up low on the list. It’s why after she created the sickle and gave Kronos her plan, she gave up her form-”
“Like Rhea?” A student called out.
Irida nodded excitedly. “Perfect transition! Rhea was also known as a fertility deity. With Kronos, she created the first six Olympians. And when he ate them, she hid their last creation and bided her time. After Kronos’ defeat, Rhea followed in Gaia’s footsteps.”
“Presumably, you know Zeus was the last born. And the one who rescued his brothers and peers, leading to the 10 year war.”
The cyclops squinted. “Only ten years? That feels, like, really short.”
Professor Irida shrugged. “Maybe to us. But a lot can happen in ten years! Especially if it’s a war.”
~~~~
Persephone thought she kept listening after Professor Irida moved on. She wasn’t the type to drift off during classes, even in the Mortal Realm. But something stuck with her.
Fertility deities.
And no matter what, she couldn’t shake it off.
It felt stupid to dwell on. If no one mentioned them before, were they really influential? Professor Irida was a history professor. Of course they’d find it import-
“Persephone?”
She snapped back to reality. Persephone turned to Aetna, already standing up to leave. “Me and Syke are going to study in-between classes. Are you joining?”
The pink goddess popped up, closing her laptop. “Sure! I’m gonna talk to Professor Irida, though. Is that-?”
He gave a quick thumbs up, his skin brightening lightly. “We can wait. I’d never get in the way of education!” He chuckled as they walked off.
Persephone laughed back, even if she didn’t get the “joke.” She waited until everyone left before stepping up to Irida’s desk. “…Professor?”
“Oh! Hello Persephone!”
She grabbed the straps to her backpack. “Hi! Um, I had a question about today’s lecture…with the fertility goddesses?”
“You mean the deities?”
Persephone wilted awkwardly.
Professor Irida straightened their back and smiled warmly at her. “Don’t feel bad! It’s a very common misconception.” They fiddled with a nearby pen. “Thinking in binaries feels…reductive to all fertility deities. You know?”
“Uh, yeah! But about them…is being a fertility deity rare?”
“Oh not at all!” Irida answered too quickly. “There’s dozens around today. But most are very casual about it.”
“Ok…Is it genetic?”
The professor shook their head. “It’s quite random, actually!”
She nodded again. “And…how can you tell if…?” Persephone trailed off.
Irida thought for a moment, clicking the pen. They scratched the bushel of gray hair on their chin. “Well…it’s not something you see off the bat. Experienced fertility deities might, but not others.”
“Typically, power surges are common with newer deities. It may seem uncontrollable, but with a teacher and training? They can do wonders.”
A smile broke out on her face. Pink and white roses bloomed on her head.
“Did that help at all?”
Persephone smiled wider. “Yep! Thank you so much!”
~~~~
“What did you two think about the lecture?”
The three beings opted to study under the bright Olympus sun. Yellows and oranges filled the sky, coloring the campus in a warm hue. Per Persephone’s request, they sat outside on the soft green grass. Students walked down the walkway beside them, with only a large Oak tree protecting them.
The pink goddess looked over to Aetna and grinned. “I really liked it! I felt I learned a lot I didn’t know before.”
Syke glanced up from their black laptop. “Isn’t this like, pretty standard stuff?”
Crap.
“W-what I mean is, I thought Professor Irida’s take was interesting! Y’know, about Gaia and Rhea?”
“I agree-” Aetna interrupted. He bounced between note-taking and making flashcards. “I thought their take was highly refreshing! I adored their deep dive into fertility deities, too. I’ve never heard of it before, either.”
Syke scrunched up her face. “For real? My parents never shut up about Gaia. They’re such fertility fanatics. Always giving offerings and taking care of their temples-”
“Temples?” Persephone and Aetna said, staring at Syke.
“There’s some in the Mortal Realm. But I haven’t been there since I was 1,700, so it might be different.”
Persephone thought to herself. She’d definitely heard of the temples mortals went to. Every few weeks, nymphs traveled to ones nearby for upkeep and getting offerings. Usually ones for her mama, but also for other gods/goddesses (deities? She should call them deities, maybe).
She never went with them, obviously.
“Fascinating! I’d love to see one sometime.” He took his eyes off Syke and back on his notes. “My dads visited the Mortal Realm a lot, when they were younger. It’s how they found me! They always said I was ‘birthed by Gaia’.”
“Visited?” Persephone asked.
“They’re from the Sea Realm. It’s where I grew up!”
Syke twisted up their nose. “But…how does that work with the…” She gestured at Aetna’s lava cracks and volcanic hair.
“Fun fact! Most hot spots in the Sea Realm are fueled by underwater volcanoes. In a weird way, I fit right in!” They chucked, their skin brightening and warming the space around them. “Especially in my dad’s hot springs. We’re quite popular down-”
“Oh my gods! Persephone! ”
The pink goddess froze. Slowly, her head turned to the voice.
Across the field, Euryale came rushing towards them. Her snake hair was pulled into a ponytail, sans one stray snake. She waved her coffee, spilling it along the way. “It’s so great to see you again!”
“Yeah! Same! Totally!” Persephone said, lying through her plastered smile.
She glanced at the others, then back at her. “And you have friends! So amazing! ”
“Is she not supposed to? ” Syke mumbled to Aetna.
Euryale bent down near Persephone, popping her personal bubble. “Do they know about…” She trailed off, still gesturing and spilling her coffee.
She smiled tighter. “Know about what? ”
Euryale giggled and tapped Persephone’s shoulder. “You know, silly! About-”
“Hey.” Aetna jumped in, still focused on their flashcards. “Aren’t you interning at Olympus GOS? ”
She glanced back at them, giving him a “ Why are you talking to me? ” smile. “Uh, yeah. What of it?”
“Do you think they’d appreciate it if, say, someone- ” Aetna placed a hand on their chest. “I’m not saying me, of course, complained that an intern was harassing a student for their publication?” He said, suppressing a laugh at the word Publication.
The snakes in Euryale’s hair hissed ominously. She patted the spare one down. “Well, Persephone hasn’t said anything. Shouldn’t we be considering her-”
“I'm being harassed right now!” The pink goddess beamed.
Euryale’s eyes widened at her. She looked at Aetna again.
“By the way,” they said in a hushed tone. “Olympus GOS goes through interns like Zeus goes through mistresses. But I’m sure you’re aware, right?”
She stared at all three of them. The snakes jutted and coiled inside her ponytail, before eventually-
POP!
Her hair band broke, releasing a chorus of snakes wildly hissing. She stood up and pouted. “Fine! Whatever! I know when I’m not wanted!”
“You sure about that?” Syke raised an eyebrow.
Euryale scoffed, quickly stomping down the hallway.
Once she left, Persephone sighed. “Thanks Aetna…she’s-”
“Difficult?” He answered.
“A harpy? ” Syke spat out.
“Yeah…” Persephone’s eyes widened slightly. “Difficult, I mean! Harpies are perfectly fine creatures!”
“Not when they’re stealing fruit from your trees- ”
“Anyways, I wanted to ask you guys-” The pink goddess pulled out her phone. “First, my birthday is coming up in a few days, and I want to do something special! Are you free?”
Aetna eyed her strangely. “You want to spend your birthday with us? What about your family?”
Persephone pressed her lips together. After spending 2,499 birthdays with only her family, she deserved a change in pace. If she asked, her mama would drop everything to spend the day with her. Persephone also knew this time was especially busy, harvest wise. Better to not trouble her too much.
“It’s fine! And we never hang outside of class.” She batted her eyes. “I mean, unless you guys are-”
“Internships. ” They both answered.
Persephone huffed, closing her phone.. “I figured…me too.”
“But if you give me the details, I should make it.” Aetna said.
“Same here!” Syke nodded.
“Great!” The pink goddess twirled a section of her hair. “Uh, this next one might be personal but…”
The two beings focused on Persephone.
She blushed, coloring her face in a light orange. “What are you guys… into? ”
“Oh!” Aetna relaxed, taking their attention off Persephone. “I’m into business!” He picked up a highlighter.
Syke scratched her face. “Uhhh…I’m into dancing? ”
She sighed and shook her head. “Not that! I mean-” Persephone leaned in. “Are you guys gay?”
They stared at her again.
Syke coughed awkwardly. “Uh, yeah?”
“Wait a second-” Aetna pointed between the two of them. “I thought-” He squinted at Persephone. “Are you not-?”
“I don’t know!” She threw up her arms. “I’m asking around to see if it clicks for me.”
“Well, I’m very gay.” Syke said proudly, patting her chest. “Also super butch! To the anger of my boss at my internship. My advice? Date a bunch of people and see what you like!”
Aetna rolled his eyes. “Ugh. I mean, I get it? But I’d rather focus on work than dating and sex.”
Persephone’s mind briefly went to Artemis. She quietly giggled.
“But it might be for you?” They shuffled their cards. "You seem like a social butterfly!”
She sighed, picking at the strings of her shorts. “But…isn’t dedicating all my time on dating kinda…” Persephone waved her hand in an “iffy” gesture.
“It doesn’t have to be serious! It can be very casual and chill.” Syke shrugged. “Unless you’re the type to stick with one person for like, ever. ”
Persephone then thought back to Anthi. Who she dated for 3,000 years. She laughed nervously. “Yeah! That’d be pretty silly!”
“It’s not necessarily silly,” Aetna chimed in. “It’s just a matter of preference. I don’t like dating, and Syke likes dating freely. If you date to find something serious, it’s fine.”
She hummed softly, playing with her hair again. “Then…I guess that’s it. I don’t want to find someone randomly, though.”
Persephone laid on her back and closed her eyes. “I’ll just wait until the right person shows up!”
Syke and Aetna glanced at each other, for a moment.
“But like, in a proactive way?”
“Are either of you going to actually study?”

Chapter Text
Clack Clack Clack-
For the fourth time today, Persephone’s head flew behind her. Her eyes focused on a light green nymph with short, styled hair. Her black kitten heels clacked against the dark blue floor, as she passed Persephone.
With a sigh, she turned back to her desk.
Since she clocked into Underworld Corp, Persephone hoped she’d run into Minthe. They hadn’t talked since their yoga outing, and she wanted to catch up. Plus…
The pink goddess shifted in her chair, pinching at her white and pink plaid skirt. She wanted to invite Minthe to her birthday celebration. It was just dinner. With a few of her friends, but…
Peonies and red Rhododendrons poofed onto her head. Her face turned a familiar shade of orange.
It’d be… nice if Minthe came.
Wait. Persephone scrunched her nose.
Was that even Minthe’s style? She felt so mature and refined. Far above simple birthday dinners.
She leaned back in her chair, eyes gazing to the ceiling. Minthe used to go clubbing, right? She could do that instead…if she knew where the “hottest” clubs were. And none of her clothes screamed “club worthy” either. And if her mama found out…
The pink goddess sighed again. Oh well.
Her birthday was only 2 days away. Better stick to the plan, than make a last minute change. She could “club it out” later.
It’d be a good thing to ask Minthe, too. And she also needed to ask-
Click Clack Clack-
Persephone raised her eyebrows.
She sat up and whipped her head around-
To Minthe standing over her.
The water nymph eyed Persephone, clutching papers in front of her chest. “... Hey. ”
“Hi Minthe!” Persephone said excitedly. She turned around in her computer chair and smiled brightly. “How’s your day going?”
Minthe took a step back. “Fine. It’s a work day so…you know. And you? ”
“It’s been good!” Persephone bounced in her chair. “I’m getting more comfortable on the computer. Pretty soon, I won’t be bugging you for help all the time!” She giggled.
Minthe pouted for a moment.
“Good.” Persephone watched as her glossy lips relaxed. She reminded herself to try lip gloss sometime. “About the computer, I mean. I don’t care if you bother me. It’s why I gave you my number.”
Her eyes lingered on Persephone’s outfit. A sleeveless white turtleneck, with a keyhole at the chest. A pink and white plaid skirt, and white flats with pink tips.
The corners of Minthe’s lips briefly rose. “I like your outfit.”
Persephone’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
“If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have said anything.” Her eyes glanced over Persephone’s chest, before looking off with a blush. “The top is… nice. ”
The pink goddess’ smile grew bigger. A bushel of red chrysanthemums grew alongside the others. “Thank you! It’s not what I usually wear, but I thought it’d be a nice change.”
“You pull it off… well. Thought you should know.” Minthe covered the lower half of her face with the papers.
“Maybe I should wear it more often!” Persephone giggled. “Stuff like this, y’know?”
“Do whatever you want.” She said quickly.
The pink goddess scooted her chair closer to Minthe. “Sooo um, are you busy? Right now? ”
The water nymph huffed, placing a hand on her hip. The papers stayed firmly against her chest. “Not particularly-”
“Great! I promise it’ll be quick!” Persephone twirled a section of her hair. “My, um, birthday is in 2 days. I’m going out to dinner with a few people and…”
She glanced up at Minthe. “I was wondering if you wanted to come? ”
Minthe’s eyes widen at the pink goddess.
Oh Gaia, Persephone thought. This was it. She was going to say: “Dinner? What are you, 1,600? ” Or “Can’t. I’m going clubbing with my mature, adult friends. But I hope you have fun, I guess…. ”
Minthe pursed her lips.
A few of the flowers wilted on Persephone’s head.
Finally, Minthe shrugged. “Yeah sure, whatever.”
She blinked. “...Wha?”
“I said yes, ” Minthe rolled her eyes. “Must not have many friends if you’re inviting me, of all beings.”
“But… we’re friends!”
“Oh. Well.” Minthe pressed her lips together. She started to walk off. “If that’s everything, then-”
“W-wait! ” Persephone stumbled out of her chair and followed her. “There’s more! I need advice!”
The water nymph laughed, slowing down her pace. “And you’re asking me? ”
“You gave me good advice before! And you probably have experience in this!”
“In what?” She raised an eyebrow.
“You know…” Persephone whispered, a blush forming on her face. “In like, dating and kissing and stuff? ”
Minthe froze.
A beat of silence passed between them.
“Nope! ” She power walked down the hallway.
Persephone continued chasing after her. Gaia, did she need to walk so fast? “Hold on! ”
“Sorry! ” Minthe called out. “I’m very busy with… something ! Deal with this on your own! ”
“But it’s important!”
“Not my problem!”
Persephone scrunched up her face in frustration. “I’ll spam your phone until you answer! I’m very persistent!”
Reluctantly, Minthe stopped.
Persephone rushed up towards her, grabbing firmly on her arm. She looked up at her with a pout. “Gaia, Minthe! That wasn’t nice at all!”
The water nymph looked down at the pink goddess. “I’m not a very nice being, Persephone. ” She drew a circle with her finger. “Make this fast.”
“Ok! What kind of beings are you into?”
“Uh…” Minthe squinted, furrowing her eyebrows. “I don’t…know?”
Persephone’s pout deepened. “What do you mean, you don’t know? ”
“You asked a very vague question!” She snatched her arm away from Persephone.
It was Persephone’s turn to huff, before pinching her skirt. “Have you… dated girls before? ” She trailed off into a whisper.
“...Have I dated what? ”
“Uh… girls. ”
Minthe stared at her blankly.
Her eyes then glanced over to the glass window wall. She looked out into the dark skyline of the Underworld. Stars sparkled dimly under the harsh, shadowed clouds.
The water nymph cleared her throat and looked back at her. “No…I haven’t...”
“Oh!” Persephone blushed again. “Sorry! I just-”
“I mean, could you imagine me? Dating women? ” Minthe chuckled coldly. “I’m not even good at dating men.” Her voice grew quiet, turning more into a hushed whisper.
Persephone watched as Minthe gripped her stomach. The papers bundled under her grasp, crinkling lightly.
The pink goddess frowned, wrinkling her eyebrows. She didn’t know how or why, but she felt like she touched a nerve.
She took a step closer to Minthe. She reached out, started to speak, and-
“Minthe!”
Persephone’s eyes went to Thanatos, as he teleported next to Minthe. Both of them jumped back, with Minthe shoving him into the nearest wall.
“Oh my GODS Thanatos!” The water nymph dropped the papers entirely, clutching her chest. “Wear a fucking bell!”
He clutched his head. “ Hey Minthe? There’s these things called “texts.” Look at them once in a while.”
His eyes glanced at Persephone. She smiled and waved.
He shot her a dirty glare, before focusing on Minthe. “I need to talk to you about tomorrow. Are you free?”
“Uh…” Minthe looked at Persephone, then back at him. “I guess?”
Thanatos picked up the papers and bumped Minthe’s shoulder. With that, they both walked off.
Persephone stood there for a moment. She turned around and started walking back to her desk.
“ ...why are you still talking to her…? ”
“...don’t worry about it… ”
~~~
Persephone tried focusing on her work. She didn’t want to look like a slacker, but-
…I’m not even good at dating men…
How could a being like Minthe say that? She was so beautiful and bold…dressed how she wanted…
The pink goddess stared at her reflection on the computer screen. Her short, unkempt hair. Flower petals still scattered on her head and desk.
Minthe had so much going for her. Everything Persephone wanted.
How could any being reject her?
Someone ought to sweep her off her feet. Everyone deserved love…especially Minthe.
The thought plagued her mind longer than she liked to admit. She didn’t mean for Minthe to feel bad about herself. If Persephone could show her how amazing she was, then maybe-
“Hello, Persephone.”
Her face dimmed. But only for a moment.
Persephone turned around and picked up her face. She gave a small, polite small. “Hello, Hades.” Her tone stayed light and easy.
Hades eyed her carefully. “I wanted to check in and see how you were doing.”
“I’m doing well, thank you!” She gestured at her computer. “Keeping myself busy with work, like everyone else.”
He chuckled lightly. “Ah yes, how diligent of you. And precocious.”
Her smile tightened against her cheeks.
“I was wondering, since you’ve been working so hard, if you’d accompany me to Acheron again. It might be-”
“Actually-” Persephone interrupted, suppressing a flinch at the word “Acheron.” “I think I’ll pass. I don’t want beings to think I’m slacking off or anything!”
Hades narrowed his eyebrows, his expression darkening. “And who said that?”
She flinched again and waved her hands in front of her. “N-no one! Honest! I just want to be productive!” She giggled, trying to hide her anxiety.
“Well, let me know if anyone does.” Hades reached into his suit pocket and pulled a checkbook out. “You’re still apart of TGOEM, correct?”
“I am! I’ve been enjoying it so much! Hestia and Athena really know what they’re doing!”
“Uh huh,” Hades nodded. He grabbed a pen off Persephone’s desk and filled out the checkbook. He ripped out the check and placed it beside her. “Here’s a… gift. From me to them.”
“Have a nice day, Persephone.” He quickly walked off.
Once Hades left her vision, her face dropped. She let out a deep sigh.
Why did this feel harder than saying yes? Nodding along and going wherever he wanted? If she kept saying no, surely he’d stop asking. Right?
Her eyes went over the check. She slid it to the middle of her desk:
To: Persephone
From: Hades
Amount: 70,000
She stared wide eyed at the amount: 70,000 drachma. Who has that much money to give out? There wasn't a limit to how much a being could have?
But as the initial shock faded, unease crept into Persephone’s mind. This was for TGOEM. For Hestia, Athena, and Artemis. Goddesses who did the hard work, taking care of so many beings.
Why make it out to her?
Thorny vines crept around her ankles.
It didn’t feel right…it must’ve been a mistake-
“Ow! ”
Persephone slid her chair back. Thorns pricked at her light pink skin, drawing ichor down her feet. She sighed again and shoved the check inside her bag.
“…I need to take a walk…”
* * *
On her tour with Minthe, Tower 2 didn’t feel as big as she expected. But after walking down the same(?) dark blue corridor, the exhaustion sunk in.
She groaned, wiping the sweat off her brow. “ Are all offices this bland and repetitive? ”
As she mindlessly walked, her thoughts continued to plague her. Maybe going to Acheron again would be good. Not for her, but for the mortals.
In hindsight, giving a few coins was a stupid idea. She didn’t have enough for everyone she hurt. Well, killed. No wonder they swarmed her.
But giving them an opportunity to lash out felt…not good. Or ok. But it was all she could do-
“Persephone?”
She blinked back to reality.
Standing in front of her was Aetna, dressed in an off white button up and dark orange slacks. Dusty VHS tapes were swaddled in their arms, almost blocking their face entirely.
She gasped and rushed toward him. “Oh my gosh! Aetna! I can’t believe you’re-”
“Up up up! ” He held a hand up, struggling to hold them with one hand. “I can’t hug and carry at the same time!”
Persephone slowed down as she approached them. She giggled sheepishly, before grabbing a bundle of tapes from the top. “ You’ve been interning here this whole time?”
Aetna nodded. “It’s been pretty hectic too. I was supposed to intern in Tower 2, but the guy who runs it was…not a fan. Of me being there.” They rolled their eyes. “So, now I bounce between helping the Fates and Furies.”
“Has it been…fun?”
“Oh, not in the slightest!” Aetna said. “The Fates and Furies are nice, but everyone else treats interns like dirt here. Between this, my part time job, and school, I’ve been exhausted .”
They hummed softly, cupping their chin. “But work isn’t supposed to be “fun,” I guess. And being here will looks great on my resume, so-”
“Wait,” Persephone shook her head. “ You have a part time job? They aren’t paying you?”
Aetna paused.
He then burst out laughing, threatening to drop his tapes. “Are you kidding me? Underworld Corp never pays their interns! They barely give us breaks as is.”
Persephone’s face fell.
“Apparently they always talk about it in the group chat. Most of us are in Tower 3, or in the lower offices in Tower 1.” Aetna tried reaching for their purse. “I don’t think your phone does group chats? But it’s not too-”
He stopped and looked back at her.
She kept her eyes to the ground, focused on Aetna’s ruffed up loafers. Her vision blurred as watery tears lid her eyes.
Aetna frowned, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, come on. It’s honestly more trouble than it’s worth. I’m not even in-”
“ W-why… ” She sniffled. “ Why do I get paid when everyone else doesn’t? ”
Persephone cried quietly, soon closing her eyes. This was all too much. She didn’t want to get special opportunities when no one else was. She didn’t want special treatment at all.
All she wanted was a normal intern experience. To be around beings her age, dealing with the exact same problems. Talking about crappy bosses or unfair workloads.
Aetna’s grip tightened. “Persephone, it’ll…” he sighed again. “You want to see where I work? With the Fates?”
Slowly, she nodded.
It didn’t matter where she went. As long as it was far away from him.
~~~
“Here we are! My home away from home…away from home.”
Aetna held out the door as Persephone walked in. Tapes were stacked all over the small office space, covering counters and the floor. Dozens of TVs illuminated the space in a light blue glow, paired with VHS players.
She immediately stepped on a tape, cracking the cover. “Sorry, I didn’t mean-” Persephone placed the tapes down and wiped her eyes. “Are you sure it’s ok for me to be here?”
Aetna waved her off and shut the door. “Don’t worry about it. The Fates won’t be back for a while. Make yourself comfy… somewhere. ” They picked up the tape with their spare hand.
She continued observing her surroundings, walking deeper inside the room. “What is all this? What are the tapes for?”
“Each tape has an entire being’s fate. It’s the Fates job to spin, measure, and cut them into tapes.” He dropped all the tapes on a nearby counter. “And it’s my job to organize them.”
Persephone sat criss cross on the floor. “Have you started, or-?”
“ Yes, yes I have. ”
“... Oh. ” Without asking, she started searching through the tapes.
“I’d have an easier time if-” Aetna stumbled into a pile of tapes on the floor. He picked them back up. “ If, they had a bigger space. Lakhesis has asked for decades, but nope! Nothing from-”
He stopped himself and took a breath. “Communication is very… poor in Underworld Corp.”
Persephone’s eyes scanned across the tapes. From the names, it looked like they were already organized. Pero, Perse, Petra…
Her eyes observed the rows of TVs nearby her. Most of them, and their players, were empty. Except for…
“Um, Aetna?”
“Yeah?” They didn’t look, too focused on cleaning up around them.
“Are tapes supposed to stick out?” Persephone pointed to the last TV in the row: a tape stuck out awkwardly from its player.
Aetna glanced up, then walked towards the TV. Persephone followed as they bent down in front. “No, they shouldn’t…”
He tried pulling the tape out. But no matter how much he tried, it wouldn’t budge. Aetna huffed, shifting it back and forth. “Come on-”
Suddenly, the player sucked the tape back in. It whirred loudly as it started to play.
They let out a small gasp, rapidly pressing the Eject button. “ No no no, I’m not allowed to look at these! Only if-”
Covered amongst the static, an image of a blood red sky emerged. Broken stone buildings littered the streets.
She felt her stomach drop down so hard, it hurt. She took a few steps back, her eyes glued on the TV.
A being came into frame. Dressed in dark green chitons, vines and thorns adorned on her head. Hands covered in dark, inky blood.
She stared aimlessly into the sky, before slowly turning her head. Dark, dead green eyes staring back at her. She took a step forward-
The tape shut off. The screen turned to a bright, glowy blue.
Aetna snatched it once it ejected out. In bright pink letters, the words “ Kore (Persephone) ” titled its cover.
“...Um,” he stood up and faced Persephone. “Now, I know it looks bad. I’m not going to sugarcoat it, but-”
She trembled and held herself. Why was she so scared? Why did she want to run away and hide again?
“The tapes show a being’s past, present, and future. Did it feel familiar?”
Persephone took in a big, deep breath.
She could do this.
“N-no,” she lied. “It’s all new to me.”
Coward.
Aetna sighed. “Ok well, that’s not any better. But Klotho says a being’s fate isn’t always set in stone? Maybe you’ll-”
“Don’t worry about it!” She smiled sweetly.
“...Really?”
Persephone smiled brighter. “Yeah! I’d rather focus on the present, anyways.”
Aetna looked down at her tape. “So…you don’t want to watch more of it?”
“Nope! I like surprises!”
She did, genuinely. Not this one, though. What if she watched more and saw him in her future? What if she couldn’t keep saying no? Because it was part of her fate?
The idea of seeing their inevitable relationship progress…going on dates…wedding rings and dresses…having-
Persephone shook her head. “Anyways, you want to get something to eat? I think we both deserve a break!”
She could focus on the present. And she could dwell on the past.
But the future? Off limits.

Chapter Text
Minthe looked out to the blood red sea, the smell of saltwater wafting to her nose. A sudden, chilling breeze brushed against her. She clung her light black shawl, blocking her dark red chiton from the air.
It didn’t matter where Minthe was. If there was a body of water nearby, she felt at ease. It made sense, her being a water nymph and all. But…
Flashes of indoor pools and cold, tile floors entered her mind. Chlorine replaced the saltwater, stinging her senses. Her hair tucked in a deep blue swimmers cap. Feet rested at the edge of the pool, ready to-
A wave crashed onto the shore and splashed her feet. She took a step back, her sandals digging into the sand. She pulled them out. “Ugh. Bad idea to wear anything heeled here,” she muttered.
Minthe took a breath, letting the saltwater smell enter her lungs. She tried quelling her racing heart, pounding into her throat. She hated this. The deep well of anxiety bubbling and trapped inside her chest.
She wished she could shrug it off. Chalk it up to work and him. But she couldn’t.
Not when the stakes were so high.
She thought back to what Helios said:
“On a warm summer day, a being of great power and youthful spirit emerged…”
Her eyes softened as she thought of Persephone. Her gentle smile…warm pink eyes…
She focused on the red shore. She didn’t want to know if Persephone was capable of that. Killing mortals without a second thought. If she was, then how was Minthe supposed to act around her?
She tried being cold and curt. But the more she hung out with her, the harder it was to keep up. It was easier when she hated her freely: Persephone was the pink ditz set to replace her. That’s all.
It made sense if things were one way, or another. Black or white. It’s what she relied on, how her feelings worked.
And right now, Persephone was the big, gray blur she couldn’t place.
“Minthe!”
She turned around, still clinging to her shawl. Further away from the shore, on the rocky path, stood Thanatos and Thetis.
He wore a chiton, similar to his other ones. Meanwhile, Thetis’ was significantly toned down. A simple, white peplos with silver clips fastened at her shoulders. Her hair was in a low braid, accessorized with a silver band.
While he was too focused on the path ahead of them, Thetis waved Minthe over. She ran up to them.
“Thanatos says we’re getting closer to the mortals. It’ll be a couple more minutes!” Thetis looked her up and down, before inspecting her face closer. “What’s up with you? ”
Minthe rolled her eyes. “ Nothing, Thetis. I…wanted to watch the water. Is that bad? ”
“No, it’s-”
“C’mon Thetis,” Thanatos tapped her shoulder. “Whatever you’re instigating can wait.” He glanced at Minthe and walked off.
Minthe followed, completely blowing past Thetis. The blue water nymph huffed and trailed behind them.
* * *
A hopelessly long line of mortals entered their field of vision. While some stood patiently, others sat on the rocky rough floor. Minthe looked at a mother with 3 children, sitting near a wall. She bounced a baby in her arms, while two other kids rested next to her.
“Uh…Thanatos?” Thetis walked towards them, eyes set on the line. She bumped Thanatos lightly. “Which ones are we looking for?”
“I…don’t know.” His voice came out sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck. “We’ll need to ask around. Go further into the line. If they’ve been dying gradually, it shouldn’t take-”
“Hey!” Minthe approached the mother.
Thanatos stared at her. “What is Minthe doing.”
“How’d you-”
“Shush!” The mother brought a finger to her lips. Her light brown eyes glared daggers into Minthe. “You don’t see three sleeping kids here? " She whispered.
The water nymph turned up her nose. “I mean, I’m not blind so-”
The mother pointed her tanned hand at Minthe. “Exactly! Pipe down!” She shook her head, rustling her messy brown hair. “It’s bad enough I’m here now, but them? It’s taken me hours to calm them down again.”
Minthe sat down in front of her. “Are they…yours?” She said quietly.
She gestured to the kids beside her. “They are. Some young girl left hers to get on the boat. And I’m not getting on there anytime soon, so… ” She looked at Minthe. “The name’s Melina, by the way.”
She sighed. “Minthe. And trust me, you’re in for a long wait.”
She heard talks about how difficult passage was at Underworld Corp. If someone wasn’t laid to rest with drachma on their bodies, they were out of luck. This buildup led to a crowded Acheron, fewer working shades, and more unpaid overtime.
It was a fucked up, faulty system that should’ve been updated decades ago. She never mentioned that to him, though. It wasn’t her place.
Thetis and Thanatos walked over to them. Thetis smiled at her baby. “Aw, they’re so cute!” She said in a hushed tone. “Can I hold them?”
Melina handed them over. Minthe scooted over to make room for Thanatos. “I’m guessing you don’t have drachma for yourself?” He asked.
“Even if I did, it wouldn’t be enough.” She ruffled one of her kid’s hair. “ I doubt we were buried properly. Our village is usually good at that, but…” She sighed, leaning against the stone wall.
“But…?” Thanatos leaned in, murmuring quietly.
Minthe held her breath.
“After she came...I know they’re overwhelmed. Our village isn’t used to attacks from goddesses.”
Her hair trembled, floating with the breeze. A cool liquid dripped down the back of her neck.
“I thought you’d know about it already.” She raised an eyebrow.
Thanatos shifted awkwardly. “We’re… trying to figure that out-”
Melina huffed. “Aren’t gods supposed to know everything? What’s the point of giving you offerings? ”
“Because everyone likes gifts?” Thetis smiled, cooing softly at the baby.
“Anyway,” he looked back at Melina. “It’d help if you tell us more. We need all the information we can if-”
“Ah yes, let me recount how me and my children died. I’m over that entirely.” Melina gazed at Minthe with a raised eyebrow. “Is she alright?”
By this point, Minthe’s eyes fixated on the red, rocky ground. Pebbles scattered along the path, tiny enough to barely notice.
The anxiety bubbling inside her had settled down. Ok. That was good.
But instead, a vast emptiness spread throughout her body. Coolness dripped further down, trickling her ears. That was bad, right? She lowered her hands, gripping her chiton tightly.
Minthe could always expect when things got worse. From her mom “forgetting” to pay rent for the 4th time, to them getting kicked out a few weeks later. Or when she gifted Hera a “subpar” gift for her birthday. Which then led to a lecture and eventual fight with Hades.
It felt second nature. Expecting the worst out of any given situation. Good things never lasted for her.
But…how the fuck was she going to handle this?
“She’s fine!” Thetis trapped Minthe into a side hug, balancing the baby in her other arm. “The pungent, salty air must be getting to her!”
Melina tilted her head upwards and snorted. “Really? It’s not that -”
“She’s got a real sensitive nose! And stomach!” Thetis placed the baby in Melina’s lap, before pulling her up. “Thanatos, you listen to our dear Melina. I’ll be…over there! With Minthe!”
Minthe knew she was being moved. Well, shoved by Thetis in an unflattering way. But as her thoughts plagued her, she didn’t even fight back. All she could feel was liquid leaking down her shoulders.
The two moved a good distance away from the line. Back to the quiet, crashing waves of the red shore. Thetis laid Minthe against a rocky wall, gripping her shoulders. “Ok girl, what’s-”
She immediately let go and shook her hands. “Ugh! Minthe, why is your hair turning watery?” Her face scrunched up.
“Uh…” she blinked a few times, eyes still lowered to the ground. “I don’t…know?”
Thetis scoffed. “Minthe, I know you. You’ve been off ever since we got here!” Thetis drew her eyebrows together, tilting her head. “Now, tell me what’s up so I can-”
“So you can what? Fix it for me?” She crossed her arms. “I get that’s your job, but don’t do it for me.”
Thetis reached out to her. “Girl, c’mon-”
She slapped her hand away with a glare. “Nothing’s wrong. I can handle myself.”
A clear and obvious lie. Minthe could barely cook for herself, let alone manage her own feelings.
But this felt…reliable. She needed something, anything to ground herself. Who cared if it wasn’t good or healthy.
Thetis flinched. “Ok Ok. Gods, fuck me for being a considerate friend.” She thought for a second, rubbing her hand. “...You wanna go out tonight?”
“...Why.” She narrowed her eyes.
“It’ll be fun! Like old times!” She smiled a little too wide, wrinkling her cheeks. “You always want to go clubbing, but I don’t because-”
“You’re old-”
“BUSY.” Thetis cut her off. “But I’m free tonight! Hera is staying in with Hebe while Zeus is…” Her plastered smile turned sheepish. “Doing stuff!”
Minthe raised an eyebrow “...is the stuff nymphs-”
“Anyway,” She batted her eyelashes. “What do you say? Let’s have a girl’s night!”
Minthe took in a breath. She felt her hair stabilizing, turning from an icy liquid to loose strands. Maybe a distraction was needed, for now. And getting plastered did sound like fun…
“You know trains from the Underworld to the Sea are terrible at night. I don’t know if it’s-”
Thetis winked. “No biggie! Tonight, we’ll be partying at your home turf!”
“...Really.”
“Yes, really! I mean, it’s only fair.” Thetis cupped her mouth with her hand. “ And I don’t need you reporting back to others about how unfair it is for you. ”
Minthe snorted, a laugh slipping out of her. “Fine. Meet me at my place so we can pregame, ok?”
Thetis waved her off. “Oh, don’t worry about that! We’ll drink our hearts out once we’re there!”
~~~
After going down the line and getting more verbal accounts, they all came to the same conclusion. A pink goddess, eyes dark and dead, attacked the village. She used plants to kill mortals and destroyed most of their buildings.
Minthe tried to keep her distance mentally. Thanatos said something about Persephone possibly having the report, but she wasn’t listening. Thank Gods Thetis carried most of the conversation and planning.
She walked mindlessly through the Underworld Corp office. Through her glazed eyes, Minthe peeked at Persephone’s desk while she passed it.
Empty. Good. She didn’t need her bubbling up her anxiety again.
Minthe approached her own desk, placed outside of Hades. She sat down and closed her eyes, rubbing her temples. “Damn it, she groaned. “I should’ve said no to her party…”
Briefly, she imagined what would’ve happened. Persephone’s eyes growing wide, slowly watering. But only for a moment.
“That’s ok!” She’d smile and hide her sadness. “I’m sure you’re busy doing your own thing!” She’d wipe her eyes as subtly as she could, before letting out a giggle. “It’s nothing special, real-”
Minthe’s head fell gently on her desk. Sharp, black nails dug into her scalp. Drips of freezing liquid seeped onto them. Even imagining it strained her head. Ugh, a headache was coming on…
No one should make her feel like this. Confused and barely hanging on. If she decided what she thought about Persephone, then-
“Minthe.”
She lifted up her head, propping her arm up for support. She squinted up at him. “Do you need anything, Hades?”
Hades adjusted his glasses. “Move my appointments up for tomorrow, if you can. I’m attending-” He frowned for a moment. “Being forced to attend an event with my brothers.”
Minthe pressed her lips together. She resisted the urge to say “If you keep doing this, your shareholders aren’t going to like it.” She shouldn’t care as much. Besides, Hecate could do that for her.
“Alright, I’ll get it done by the end of the day.”
Her eyes glanced at Hades. The two stared back at the other. Wasn’t he supposed to go away now?
“What else?” She said curtly.
He sighed, as if she was bothering him. “You know…you don’t have to be so-”
Before she could say anything, Hecate poofed next to Hades. She furrowed her eyebrows at him. “Did you forget about your meeting with the banks? The one we should’ve left 5 minutes ago for?”
“I didn’t. I was informing Minthe about a few things.”
Hecate gave Minthe a once over, then looked to Hades. “I’m sure she can handle herself. That’s why you hired her, correct?”
Hades cleared his throat. “Correct ” He looked off and fixed his tie. “We should get going.”
“Quite. I have somewhere to be tonight, so let’s hope this doesn’t drag on.”
The two teleported away, finally leaving her alone.
“You don’t have to be so bitchy, Minthe.” She mocked, before picking up the phone. Whatever. She had bigger things to worry about…and ignore for the time being. She just needed to get through work.
Soon, she’d be dancing to music so loud it’d kill her eardrums. Drinking to her heart’s content… only a matter of time…
~~~
“Thetis…”
Minthe leaned back against the lavish, decorative booth they sat in. Her arms were crossed, glaring deeply at the blue water nymph.
Like most establishments in the Underworld, the decor was sleek and glossy. Blues and blacks colored their surroundings, accented with silver. From the crashing cymbals and smooth saxophone notes, it was a far cry from club music. The live jazz band played a floor below them at the center, easy to see from their seating.
Thetis tapped her blue, manicured nails against the shiny black table. “Technically speaking, this is a club. It’s just…better!” She smiled innocently.
Her glare darkened.
“Aw, c’mon Minthe! You have to admit: this place is really nice!” She gestured over the bar closest to them. A golden satyr mixed drinks and mingled with the patrons around them. They wore a satin black vest and crisp white button up.
“And look at you!” Thetis focused on Minthe. “You’re so pretty. I mean, even more than usual!”
The red water nymph simply scoffed. “I should’ve known something was off when you asked me to change.”
Originally, she picked out a black, strapless dress paired with a gold metallic belt. With her golden studded earrings and high heeled boots, it was the perfect balance of comfort and style.
But instead, she wore a long sleeved black dress. It fitted snugly around her body, highlighting the little bit of curves she had. The keyhole at the front and open back added some sexiness. It took her mind off the big bow tied at the back of her neck. Though, both did remind her of Persephone…
Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, showing off her golden bar earrings. While her strappy heels showed off her black nail polish.
Thetis wagged her finger at Minthe. “But it was worth it! You never get to dress up anymore since-”
“Since I don’t awkwardly hang around with you and your bosses anymore?” Minthe smiled tightly.
“Maybe that’s for the best. Since you hated it so much.” Thetis chuckled, letting the silence hang in the air.
Minthe observed her outfit: a (modestly) short dark turquoise dress with poofy long sleeves. Her hair flowed down her shoulders, shimmering lightly.
Her eyes went back to the bar. The satyr was talking animatedly with one of the patrons. Their back was facing Minthe, revealing their own open back dress. It looked dark enough to be black, but the club’s lighting revealed it’s sparkling midnight blue fabric. The dress fell to the ground and trailed behind them.
Minthe’s eyes traveled up their muted blue back, resting on their short bobbed hair.
Wait.
That…bob look familiar-
Hecate looked back at Minthe.
She quickly looked away.
“What? ” Thetis turned around. “What did you-”
“Hello Minthe.” Hecate approached their table with a drink in hand. The cocktail glass shimmered with her gown, blue and purple swirls shifting inside. She glanced at Minthe’s guest. “And Thetis.”
Thetis jumped up, before grinning at her. “Hiiii Hecate! I didn’t know you went out!” She started twirling her hair.
She arched an eyebrow. “You didn’t know…I went out.”
“Mmm Hmm.” She nodded fast.
The witch goddess stared at her for a hot minute. She turned back to Minthe. “Have you two ordered drinks yet?”
Hesitantly, she shook her head. “Uh…no, we-”
“Loukas!” She called the bartender. “I’ll be covering the drinks at this table. Give us a round of cocktails, please.”
He nodded and started preparing the drinks. Hecate pointed between the two water nymphs. “I hope I’m not intruding. Is it fine if I sit here?”
Minthe opened her mouth. “Actually, I-”
“It’s fine!” Thetis smiled widely, scooting out of her booth. “Take my side, I’ll sit next to Minthe.”
“Thetis, what’re you-“
The blue water nymph pushed Minthe as she sat down. “She’s paying for our drinks,” Thetis whispered. “Take the fucking hint.”
Minthe shot a look at Thetis, before looking back at Hecate. The goddess simply smiled at her. “So, is this the somewhere you needed to be?”
Hecate nodded. “I’ve been wanting a night out for sometime. I thought tonight would be the perfect opportunity. But enough about me; how have you two been?”
Thetis immediately jumped in. “Oh, I’ve been great! Work has been a handful, but I love to stay busy!” She paused. “Not that Hera and Zeus are a handful! I mean other things, of course.”
“Uh huh.” Hecate sipped her drink and pulled out her phone.
“But Hebe is a darling to look after! She’s been doing so good in ballet and-”
“Right of course- ” The goddess looked over to Minthe. “And what about you?"
The red water nymph blinked. Her eyes went between Hecate and Thetis. “…is this a trick question?”
“Minthe,” Thetis laughed in a “what the fuck are you doing? ” way. “You don’t have to be so paranoid!”
She did, actually. If your ex-boyfriend/boss’s second in command asked how you were doing, you’d be equally suspicious. Especially when she didn’t have the… best relationship with Hecate.
80% of the time, Hecate acted as the “peacekeeper” when they were dating. But no matter what he did, she always took his side. “Minthe, you need to leave. Minthe, stop causing a scene.”
What if she was fishing for reasons to get her fired? She already didn’t like her…or Thanatos, but-
RING RING! RING RING!
Thetis searched through her purse and pulled out her phone. “Hello? ” From the haughty tone, Minthe assumed it was Hera on the line.
The blue water nymph soon got up and walked off, still listening. “Hera, I’m sure Zeus isn’t doing that… ”
Minthe leaned out of the booth, keeping watch. She waited until Thetis was out of eyeshot.
Her head whipped back to Hecate. “Ok, what the fuck is going on? ”
“Hm?” The goddess tilted her head.
“Here you go, ladies.” Loukas placed their drinks down: cocktails with a variety of colors, almost like a rainbow. “Anything else?” He grinned.
Hecate pulled out a couple drachma and handed it to him. “Nothing for me, thank you.”
Minthe shook her head. Once he left, she started chugging a drink.
“I haven’t seen you around often.” Hecate swirled her drink around. “Except at the office, obviously. It’s probably for the best.”
“Why? Because I’m so bad for Hades?” She slammed it down.
The goddess paused, pressing her lips together. “... Yes.”
Minthe opened her mouth as Hecate raised a hand. “But, I think it’s mutual. It was causing a lot of unneeded conflict and headaches for me.”
She scoffed. “I’m sorry our relationship was inconvenient for you.”
“It was inconvenient for everyone, including you.” Hecate sighed. “Do you know how many days off you took after one of your fights? Who do you think wiped those off your record?”
“...Do you want a fucking medal?”
Hecate let out a deeper sigh. She pinched the bridge of her brow. “Minthe…” She said tensely. “What are you still doing here?”
Her eyes widened briefly. She felt her hair shifting once more, dripping onto her scalp.
Bingo.
Minthe chuckled coldly. “So, he does want to fire me. Makes sense. We’re not dating anymore. We barely even talk… ” She held her arms. She looked into the glasses of cocktails next to her. “I’ve worn out my use…”
She dug her nails in, ignoring her eyes getting hot. It was pathetic enough that Hecate was doing this. That it was in public. Crying would just make it worse.
“Minthe, I’m going to be honest. I don’t know what he wants to do.”
Her eyes drifted from the drinks to Hecate’s phone.
“I’m not a mindreader or his keeper. Frankly, I’m sick of all of this. Seeing him going around in circles, fixing his mistakes-” She stopped herself. “I just think getting out first is wise. Between you and that girl, I-”
“Persephone? ” Minthe eye’s snapped to Hecate. “What about her?”
Hecate watched her carefully. She finished her drink before talking. “I’ve noticed you two hanging around in the office.”
Minthe relaxed her hands. “Yeah…?”
“Tell me your thoughts about her.”
She looked down again, eyes scanning the table. Reflexively, she picked up another drink and threw it back. “You go first.”
“Oh my Gaia, Minthe-“
“What? It’s only fair.”
The goddess rolled her eyes. “Well…I saw glimpses of her when I visited Demeter. She keeps her away when guests from Olympus visit. And I’m the only one from the Underworld who Demeter trusts.”
“I saw Persephone more once she moved. Sweet goddess. Maybe too sweet. Probably why Hades is so…” She trailed off, grabbing another drink. “But I’ve only seen her with either him… or you. So-” Hecate waved the drink in Minthe’s direction.
She shifted in her seat, feeling the buzz of alcohol warm her skin. “She’s…I don’t know. I fucking hated her when I first saw her, but…”
Minthe leaned back. “She’s really nice. Which I thought was stupid, but it’s kinda fine? She’s always asking me to hang out and stuff. And that’s been…fun.”
Her eyes gazed up at the vast ceiling. She started holding her stomach. “But I don’t know how to feel about her…I’ve never felt this way before…” Minthe looked back down. “Anyway, does that answer your weird question?”
The goddess observed her once more. She drew her eyebrows, her face unreadable. “...Sure. I think it does…You want my advice?”
“No-“
She continued on. “Leave. Find another job, somewhere outside of Underworld Corp. It’s not good for you to still work under him.” Hecate looked at her frankly. “I’m only doing this because I’d…hate to see you struggle financially.”
“Wow, how …thoughtful?” Minthe said.
She finished her drink and got up. “I’ll leave you alone for now. I’d hate to ruin your night out more than I have.”
Minthe shrugged. “It’s fine. Thetis basically did that already.”
“Well, I’m sure Hera is making up for that now.” Hecate chuckled to herself, before walking off.
The water nymph sunk into her seat, letting the soft jazz calm her nerves. She truly didn’t know why Hecate was trying to help her. If she did, she would’ve done it when they were still dating. Doing it after the fact was meaningless, right?
And what was the point of leaving first? Sure, she didn’t like seeing him all the time. But where else could she go?
Another office? Maybe, if she got a good recommendation. The idea of going back to school popped in her mind, but that was laughable. It was too late for her.
She’d have to go back to her old job.
That was the only outcome.
Her hands picked up another drink: a vibrant pink with dark red swirls, topped with a cherry. Her thoughts went back to Persephone, regrettably.
Minthe hadn’t made up her mind about her. But she was the type to go to school, have a fulfilling career. Make it in the world.
Persephone, despite it all, had potential. And Minthe didn’t.
She sipped quietly on the pink drink, with the small hope she’d get it too.
