Confidante

Summary:

Syaoran goes to Yukito for advice.
Silly little scene that was supposed to be part of something longer that I'm way too lazy to finish any time soon haha

Notes:

look if Nakuru doesn't care about gender because she's not human you can't tell me that Yue would care either. anyway that's context I think got left out of this scene LOL

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It’s a rare occurrence that Yukito gets the day off from both classes and work, but he’s not about to complain. He will gladly take a day off to relax.

So when he gets a knock at his door, he’s a bit curious. He knows it’s not Touya, because he still had some hours left on his shift. The only other person he assumes it could be is Sakura, which would make sense, since her school would have gotten out not too long ago.

He gets up from his couch and walks to the door, expecting to greet her, but instead he sees a different child.

“Syaoran-kun, hey! What brings you here?”

“I… wanted to ask about something,” he replies with uncertainty.

Yukito knows that Syaoran doesn’t really have many older people he can go to for advice in Tomoeda, considering his family is all overseas. And from what little he knows about them, his relationship with his mom is rather business-like, and his sisters don’t take him very seriously at all. So, if Syaoran considers Yukito to be an adult he could ask for advice, he's more than happy to fill that role.

“Come in,” he says. “What’s up?”

Syaoran walks into the room and sits on the couch. He looks down at his hands, folded in his lap.

“Maybe it’s Yue you want to talk to,” Yukito jokes in an attempt to prompt Syaoran into elaborating.

This makes him think. “I guess he could help, but…” he trails off.

“But if you want to talk to me that’s perfectly fine too!” Yukito reassures him. He wants him to know that he can come to him with anything he needs to.

Syaoran sighs. “...How did you know you were nonbinary?”

Yukito blinks. He’s not sure what he was expecting, but it probably wasn’t that.

“Well, I kind of never felt like I was fully a guy, but when I learned about Yue, I thought it might just have been because of that influence. The feeling never went away, though, so I finally accepted that I’m not one, whether or not Yue has anything to do with it. I’m not sure how much that actually helps, though…”

Honestly, he wishes he did let Yue answer this. He may be blunt, but he knows how to get to the point. “Is there something you wanted to tell me? You don’t have to say anything more if you don’t feel comfortable yet, though,” he adds. He doesn’t want to accidentally scare him out of talking to him.

“I’ve just… been thinking…” Syaoran starts.

Yukito waits patiently.

“I guess I’ve kind of felt like this for a while, but…” He pauses. “I’m always kind of… uncomfortable when people call me a boy. I just ignored it because I thought it was unreasonable, and I had more pressing matters to deal with, but I just can’t anymore. I… I tried, a couple times, to see how it felt to think of myself as a girl, but that didn’t really feel right either, not really…”

“What about the school play? You didn’t seem too comfortable as the princess…”

Syaoran flushes. “That’s—that—that was because of extenuating circumstances.” Yukito stifles a laugh and Syaoran buries his face in his hands. “No—I mean—the fact that it was a ‘girl role’ and I was in a dress wasn’t my problem at all. It was the texture of the frills, and the long wig poking my back through the dress, and performing in front of a crowd…”

Yukito hums in understanding.

“I think—that experience made me shove it down even more. Because I hated that play, so then I thought it must mean I also hate, you know, everything about it, like dresses… and not being seen as a boy… but that’s not it, either. I just—” He groans and moves his head from his hands to stare at the ceiling.

“It’s fine to not have it all figured out at once,” Yukito tells him. “I get how confusing it can feel. But you’re so young, and you’ve got plenty of time to get the details ironed out, especially now that you have no mission to worry about. But even if you did, you know, I think Sakura-chan would be understanding if you wanted to focus on yourself a little too.”

At the mention of his girlfriend’s name, Syaoran blushes again. Yukito smiles warmly. Even Touya couldn’t fully deny how wholesome their relationship was.

Syaoran looks down at his hands, still avoiding looking at Yukito. “Uh—thank you. For entertaining my questions.”

“No problem at all. You’re welcome to come here whenever you want, even if you don’t have anything to talk about.”

A bit awkwardly, Syaoran gets up to leave, but Yukito can tell that he’s more relaxed than when he first arrived.

When Touya gets back later, Yukito does mention to him that Syaoran had come over earlier, but he doesn’t tell him the exact topic, just that it was personal advice.

“It’s always you or Yue those brats go to for help. What about me? I’m perfectly approachable,” he grumbles.

“I’m surprised you would want Syaoran-kun to come to you for advice, I’d assume you’d just get mad at him and scare him off even if he did.”

“I don’t just mean him,” Touya shoots back. “Besides, I’m totally approachable. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“The kid literally thinks you despise him.”

“He’s the one who hates me. It’s not my fault he’s a brat and is rude to me.”

Yukito laughs. “That’s the exact attitude that makes you unapproachable to him. We both know you’re going to have to drop the act eventually—especially if you want him to ever ask you for advice.”

Touya crosses his arms. “Yuki, you’re lucky I love you and can’t get angry at you,” he huffs.

Notes:

posting this from my barely-functional backup computer* because my normal computer went from being usable but mildly inconveniencing (weird screen issues) to straight up basically unusable this morning and it's not getting better. I do have a new one on the way but it's not getting to me until tomorrow OTL
