An odd Couple of grumpy old Brits

Summary:

Giles and Spike are flatmates, until Olivia comes for a visit in Hush. What if this never happened and the two Brits lived together a bit longer? How would a relationship of fellow countrymen have evolved. And what influence could that have on our beloved Spuffy?
Let's find out.

Notes:

I always liked the photo of JM and ASH with the teacups and wanted it on a banner and then started looking for a challenge to inspire me. I found one asking for the Odd Couple version of Spike & Giles in a season 4 where Olivia did not come for a visit and Spike stayed longer with Giles instead of moving to Xander.

I liked the idea to compare Spike & Giles to the Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau movie 'The Odd Couple' but it wasn't a perfect fit. In the movie the guys were old best friends that ended up living together. Spike and Giles are far from best friends in the beginning (I'm working on changing that). There is another movie by the pair called 'Grumpy Old Men' where they play neighbours who don't like each other. I saw the Spike&Giles relationship somewhere in between and hence the slightly long title.

Notes:

Usually I don't post banner to AO3, but I make an exception for this as the banner is the reason this story even started.
Banner by me.
No beta, all mistakes are mine.

Chapter Text

Vampires, mummies, robot stepdads, giant snake mayors, apocalypse-sses, plural – Buffy has seen it all and defeated them. But one sight she was not prepared for, nor would ever get over, greeted her on a Saturday evening in Giles’ apartment.

She was just coming by to bring back a book on her way to the Bronze. Entering without knocking, because that was how she always did it. Giles didn’t mind.

Opening the door she greeted her watcher, ”Hey Giles, I don’t have much time, Willow is already waiting for me--”

And she stopped in her tracks. Her usually calm watcher did scream insults toward the TV, while Spike sat on the couch, feet propped on the coffee table, laughing. Both, watcher and vampire, had a beer in their hand and an assortment of empty bottles littered the table – surrounded by bowls of chips. Giles wore some kind of scarf around his neck. Blue and red with tassels. Tassels, really. And it looked to be woollen – a bit much for Southern California, inside, even if it was winter.

On the TV some sort of game was on. Several men were running on a field, fighting for a small ball. It wasn’t a sport Buffy was familiar with, nothing she ever did any cheerleading for. Maybe soccer, she heard that the English like it.

That both men – or one man, one vampire – hadn't even realized her arrival, was almost insulting. Or it would be if Buffy had any desire to make her presence known. The best would be to leave and forget about this. Maybe it never happened and was just some figment of her imagination.

Leaving the book next to the entry she backed out of the apartment and closed the door silently.

She would come back tomorrow, and if the situation hadn’t changed by then she would have to consider, that Giles was under a spell. What else would make him behave like this. It reminded her a bit about the episode with the chocolate bars – maybe she should quickly check on her mom.

Better safe than sorry.

And if it was no spell, whatever happened in that apartement? Would she even want to find out?

Notes:

This was a short introduction and the last time the POV is neither Spike nor Giles.
The first chapter is already up. After that I'll try to post about every other week.
