Chapter 1: A ray of Hope

Chapter Text

EraserHead used his capture weapon to swing between the trees propelling himself forward. His mind full of many things.

But the main thing is; he knows the chance of this panning out is very low.

The meeting time for the hand off has already come and gone. And the drive here took too long; if only he had gotten that phone call a little sooner.

Eraser knows that Kenji has probably already left with Shinsou 2 hours ago. But he can't help but hope. ~~~*

This entire time he has been following the right trail but he kept showing up too late. This is the third or four time he has missed his chance to save Shinsou.

It's like he is being taunted; right when he thinks he has come within reach of getting his protegee back, reality comes and knocks him back down.

Last night Shinsou got a hold of a phone and told Eraser about the hand off. But he didn't know the exact location all he knew was it was an old tuna cannery and the time the deal would go down.

But that left dozens of possible places that the hand off could go down.

They had already searched all the locations nearby for Shinsou and had come up empty handed.

They had a few more ideas of where Shinsou might be. But each place was hours apart.

If they picked the wrong one, there wouldn't be enough time to search another. And they were already low in manpower to begin with.

And this kidnapping case has already dragged on just over a week now.

It was nine o'clock when a call came into the Mustufu police department; that was about hour before the meeting between Masaru and Kenji was suppose to take place.

The tip came from a kid calling himself Kit.

Kit said he knew where Shinsou was but he wouldn't say anything unless he talked to EraserHead directly. So Detective Tsukauchi transfer the call to him.

Kit told him that Shinsou was being held captive in a warehouse in Hachinohe by a gang that his cousin was in.

Kit knew that it was a race against time and that Shinsou wasn't going to be there much longer.

Eraser asked Kit how he came across this information; because he needed to make sure this wasn't a trap or a trick set up by Kenji.

Especially with the fact that Kit would only talk to him; an underground hero instead of Detective Tsukauchi who is in charge of this case.

It turned out that apparently Kit was currently in said warehouse; and he got the information about EraserHead from Shinsou himself.

Kit said he was at his aunt's warehouse trying to spy on his cousin for fun, when he saw her gang drag Shinsou in and lock him up.

When Shinsou was left alone, Kit (who had been hiding in the same room) talked to Shinsou.

Shinsou had told Kit about how he got there and about EraserHead his mentor. Kit said he tried to help Shinsou escape; but his cousin caught them. And only Kit got away.

Kit tried to disable the van that the gang used but was found out; and they where working on fixing it. The phone call was his last effort to help Shinsou.

Shouta pinched the bridge of his nose upon hearing this; by the sound of his voice Kit was probably younger than his students and yet he is trying to pull off this kind of stunt?

After Eraser got as much info as he could from Kit, he told the kid to get out of there if he could so he didn't get caught again.

But Kit say he had to see this though and he would just find a place to hide. He said he would call again if he heard anything else; then he hung up.

Shouta didn't even have time to get a word in, let alone argue it.... Problem children, all of them.

As soon as the call ended Eraser got on the phone with the Detective and headed out. Panther insisted on tagging along, and jumped in the passenger seat of his car.

Eraser and Panther where closer to the location that Kit gave him than Tsukauchi, Midnight, and the other Pros. But it still would take 3 hours to travel the distance to get there.

It was about 20 minutes later when Eraser got another call from Kit. He said about half the gang left with Shinsou.

Eraser told the Kid to keep his head down until either him or Detective Tsukauchi got there. Kit sounded defeated as he agreed without a fight this time.

Shouta knew it was only a matter of time before Masaru took Shinsou to Kenji, but it cut deeper than he thought it would.

The dread that came over him after hearing that was threatening to take him to a dark place.

He felt like he was standing on the edge; when Panther got his attention.

“Hey look at this Eraser. I combined the info you got from Kit, along with what we got from Shinsou. And I came up with two possible locations for the Kenji's meeting to go down.” Panther showed him his phone.

Shouta took he eyes off the road for a second and looked at the screen, and sure enough both places could fit the description of the meeting place.

“Ok, send a picture of that to Tsukauchi and tell him we will take the location to the north.” Shouta said moving back into work mode.

If Panther wasn't here he doesn't know if he could have pulled himself out of that and get back on track.

There still might be a chance to get Shinsou back. He can't lose it now. If need be he can mourn the loss later; but now is not the time.

“Done. Anything else?” Panther asked.

“No. But I do have a question, where did you get that locating program from? Last I checked only a few Hero agencies had access to that new edition so far.” Eraser said keeping his eyes on the road as he pass another car.

“I stole the hard copy, download it, then I returned it.” Panther said causally like it wasn't a big deal.

“You what?” Eraser asked; he was dumbfounded that Panther admitted to it plain and simple like that.

“Oh, come on EraserHead, I'm a Vigilante we're know for doing this kind of stuff all the time. Nobody got hurt, I returned it and they probably didn't even know I did it too." Panther stated.

"Besides why would I use a bunch of fancy words to dance around the issue anyway? That would be just 'Illogical' and a waste of both our time.”

Eraser huffed pinching the bridge of his nose. Panther had a point; even he can't argue that.

After a few minutes pasted with out him saying anything Panther spoke up. “See you know I'm right.”

Eraser huffed shaking his head. “I've met a lot of vigilantes; but I think your the most reckless I've met so far. You might want to tone it down a little.”

“EraserHead is giving me advice? Does that mean I might just be your favorite vigilante?” Panther grins.

“I'm just giving you a tip. Seriously a vigilante jumping in the car with a Pro Hero? That's like asking to be arrested. Had I been anyone else that's exactly what would have happened.” Eraser said keeping his eyes on the road.

“First of all I only did it because the 'Pro Hero' was you. And if you wanted to arrest me that would have happen a long time ago. And second, we would be going to to the same place anyway; so this way I not only save time, I save on train fare too.” Panther folded his arms.

“If anything I made the right choose here. So what if I'm honest with you about how I do things; just because I trust you doesn't mean I trust other heroes on this level. I'm not some rookie anymore and you know that.” Panther stood his ground.

“It's not that Panther... The other day when I lost contact with you... I thought you jumped into action when you saw Kenji leave, and got killed for it.” Eraser sighs, lowering his voice.

“I don't know what I would have done if that truly was the case.”

“Holy Shit your serious.” Panthers' eyes widened.

“Yes. I don't always agree on how you do things. But nonetheless I have respect for you. I don't see you as just an informant or some vigilante. Your akin to a few other pros that I am close to.” Eraser said, purposefully keeping his eyes on the road in front of them so he didn't have to see Panthers reaction.

“I've been joking about being your favorite vigilante for years. But wow it's kinda crazy to hear that it's true.” Panther runs his hand though his hair.

“Why are saying all this? It's not like you Eraser.” Panther leaned forward in his seat. Panther waited patiently as a few minutes passed. Then Shouta finally answered.

“Over the last couple days, I have been thinking a lot about the things that I haven't said to the people that I've become close to... Especially the ones that I've lost, they may never know how I really felt. But when I did want to say something, it was to late. I just don't want to make the same mistake again.”

“That's understandable...” Panther nodded.

“Who knows maybe we'll get lucky and find Shinsou. Then that will be one less regret you have.” Panther said trying to lighten the mood.

Eraser hummed his acknowledgment, but said nothing. His eyes drifted to the clock in the car; it read 10:32.

They both hoped to get Shinsou back, but legalistically the hand off is probably already done and over with.

Shouta's grip on the steering wheel tighten, as he drove on. Just the thought of His protegee in Kenji's hands makes his blood boil.

Chapter 2: A Shot in the Dark

Chapter Text

It was a little after midnight when they arrived. Eraser had just got done talking to the officers that would their backup if needed.

The old cannery was built on an island with only one bridge connecting it to the main land. There also was a small stretch of trees, that ran next to bridge all the way to the island.

His plan was for him and Panther to go in using stealth first, and have the officers on standby. Despite being over 2 hours late, Eraser was treating this like any other hostage hand off.

Eraser left the cops to guard the bridge. As He and Panther followed the tree line over to the island.

“I never thought I'd see the day you would call me your intern; even if it is just a ploy.” Panther said as he ran between the trees.

“It was just easier than trying to explain why I brought a vigilante with me.” Eraser replied. “Now, I'll start on the east side of the island, and you get the west. Keep me updated as you go.”

“You got it Boss.” Panther grinned glancing up at Eraser who came to a stop in a large tree. Eraser huffed giving the vigilante a flat look.  “Really Panther?”

“Hey, I might never get the chance to pretend to be a cocky intern again. So, I got to make the most of it while I can.” Panther defended.

Eraser pinched the bridge of his nose. Sometimes he questions, if any of the people he works with ever actually grow up.

“Whatever... let’s just go.” Eraser secured his capture weapon on a branch in front of him so he could make the distance from the edge of the tree line to a warehouse.

“Yes Sir.” Panther saluted, then he ran off toward the west side of the island.

Eraser landed on the roof softly. He creeped forward then he peered over the edge.

Eraser scanned the area down below for a few minutes, but he didn't see anyone or anything noteworthy.  A heavy thought kept weighing on the back of his mind.

'Two hours late... even if Kenji was here; we might not find any evidence of it.'

Eraser swings over to the next warehouse. 'I have to find something... I can't leave this lead without finding anything.’

Once his feet hit the roof, unexpectedly Panther's voice comes over his ear comm.

“EraserHead, there's at least one person still here, if not more. I just came across van and I wanted to get a better look so I jumped on the roof of the nearest building. Somebody is clearly messing around in the warehouse that I'm on top of right now. Since you’re the boss here; how do you want to play this?”

“Stay on the outside of the building and do some recon until I get there. Be careful as to not tip them off that we're here. If they come out before I get there then use your judgment whether act or not.” Eraser ran to the edge using his capture weapon to swing to the next roof.

“Ok. It’s the far west warehouse closest to the ocean. Oh, and there is a large pile of old nets next to it… From here I don't see anyone in the front seat of the van; but I can't confirm anything about the back of the van.” Panther said.

“Ok, keep an eye on the van but as long as it's not running it will be our second objective. We have the officers holding the bridge so even if they try to drive off they won't get far.” Eraser swings to the top of a boat.

He has a lot of stuff running though his mind. He's trying not to get his hopes high; but this might be the miracle he has been praying for. Maybe by some stroke of luck Shinsou is still here.

“Gotcha... You know I could get use to this. No wonder heroes like having someone that they can trust to watch their back.” Panther said as he hopped down to the ground.

“If that's the case, then-” Eraser started but stopped halfway; turning his head to listen better. He could faintly hear some yelling back from the way he came.

Then the sound of a gunshot rang though the air.

Gunshots and gun fights are quite common during his patrols. Even in the midst of all that chaos Eraser can think logically and stay relatively calm, as he deals with the situation.

But not this time…

Dread filled his mind after the gun went off and somebody yelled out in pain. The yell was familiar; after months of training with his student there is no doubt in his mind that this yell came from Shinsou.

“Hey you ok Eraser? I just heard a gunshot from your direction.” Panther asks.

Within seconds Eraser switched directions and headed back the way he came. No longer worried about tipping somebody off; he takes off at full speed. Right now he needs to get there as fast as he can.

“I'm fine. I think Shinsou is here; and he was shot. I'm heading there right now. Handle things on your end as you see fit.” Eraser replied as he swings though the air.

“Will do; I'll wrap things up here real quick, then meet you there asap.” Panther said, the sound of breaking glass in the background.

“Ok.” Eraser says but he sighs internally. Of course, Panther is going to use reckless moves to get done sooner. But whatever it's out of his hands now, his mind is locked onto what is in front of him.

The closer Eraser gets the better he can hear the conversation. And with each passing word it just makes him angrier.

“---you can't even escape me through death.” That Bastard Kenji said.

Eraser was almost there but it's still not good enough. Fear sets in the pit of his stomach and he grits his teeth as swings.

He hasn't seen the scene yet, so he can't conform anything but with the way Kenji is talking and without hearing Shinsou for a while... the worst-case scenario comes to his mind.

Eraser is close enough to see Kenji standing over Shinsou now; but he still not close enough to do anything about it yet.

“And here I thought Eraserhead was the only pain in the ass. You should have been the easy one to deal with. But here you are pissing me off more than he ever did.” Kenji said as he walked around Shinsou.

Then Shinsou started screamed in agony as Kenji digs the heel of his boot into Shinsou's injured shoulder. Eraser was angry before but now he is furious; how dare Kenji torture his student like this.

Kenji won't let up and just digs in more as Shinsou continues to scream in pain. “If you think this is bad than you just wait. If you so much as test me; I'll-- Ahh!!”

The second Eraser got into range, he activated his quirk and let his capture weapon fly. It wrapped around Kenji’s arm that was raised in the air.

Eraser yanked his weapon with both hands so he could put as much space between Kenji and Hitoshi as possible.

Eraser took a quick glance at Shinsou; he was lying there on the ground clearly going into shock from a gunshot wound.

Shouta desperately wanted to run over there to help. But he knows he can't do that until he deals with Kenji first.

Eraser clenched he teeth and turns his attention to Kenji who was now back on his feet; knife in hand having just cut though the capture weapon. “HA to think, it'd be none other than EraserHead himself making a sad attempt to arrest me once again.”

“I Won't Let you get away this time Kenji.” Eraser glared, as he threw his capture weapon at Kenji who just barely dodged it.

“The way I see it is you either arrest me or you save that precious protegee of yours. You can't have both. I'm not playing around anymore.” Kenji said taking a gun out from behind his back and cocks it; aiming it at Shinsou.

“DON'T!!! Leave Him out of this!” The distance between them is too large to make an effect-of counter measure. Eraser throws the end of his capture weapon praying it reaches Kenji quick enough.

“You know better than anyone else there is NO WAY I would do that.” Kenji pulled the trigger as Eraser's capture weapon wraps around his wrist. Eraser pulled his capture weapon and the bullet went into the side of the building.

Kenji wasn't as faze at all by Erasers' action. He just grinned, like it was all a part of his plan.

“I need to use everything I can, to get the upper hand. It's only 'Logical' that way. Don't you agree Eraserhead?” Kenji mocked.

Kenji still had the gun in his hand and with the tight hold Eraser had on Kenji's wrist with the capture weapon the gun was aimed directly at him.

“You shouldn't have dragged my student into this in the first place. This was between you and me from beginning.”  Eraser yelled back sending the other end of his capture weapon to tie up Kenji's feet, but not quick enough.

“I DON’T CARE! I play by my own set of rules anyway!” Kenji yelled pulling the trigger, and Eraser jerked Kenji's wrist to the left. And the bullet grazed Erasers arm.

It was a far cry from putting him out of commission, but it gave Kenji enough time to cut his way out of the capture weapon.

Eraser glanced over at Shinsou again, as he pulled his capture weapon back to get another throw at Kenji.

He saw that Panther had showed up and seemed to be helping the kid. With a slight peace of mind Eraser was able to turn all his focus to the fight with Kenji; which was taking much longer than he had liked.

But that's what he gets for jumping into a fight too soon. If he had just gotten a little closer before making first contact with Kenji; he could have had Kenji tied up and knocked out by now.

This is why he tells his students to think logically instead of acting on emotions. An extra minute of prep time can save you in the long run...

Chapter Text

Eraser sends his capture weapon back toward Kenji. Kenji just barely dodges it and fires the gun; and the bullet hits an old boat.

“After our little face to face meeting; I offered a lot of money to get my hands on anything and everything about you Eraserhead.” Kenji said and fired his gun.

“It didn't take long for someone to approach me. But what really surprised me; was how eager somebody from the hero commission was to sell your info to me.”

“They even offered me a substantial amount of money to take you off their hands. But that didn't line up with my plans so I took the info and turned down their offer.” Kenji shot again as he continued backing up.

Eraser jumped to the side dodging another bullet.

“ERASER Hurry UP and get over here! Shinsou isn't responding to me anymore.” Panther yelled from where he was kneeling next to Shinsou.

That got his attention and Eraser turned his head just in time to see Panther get flung back a few feet away from Shinsou.

It must be Kenji's hidden partner; the same one that got the drop on them the last time around.

Eraser didn't see anyone at first but Panther was clearly fighting with someone. Then he looked at the fight again using his quirk this time.

It reviled the person; it was Hanzo. The kidnapper who escaped with Kenji before the raid on the old apartment building.

“Hey Eraser, I got this guy handled. So don't let Kenji get way!” Panther yelled from his fight. Eraser just nodded and turned back to Kenji. He had gotten quite far and was about to disappear behind the counter.

“Damn it!” Eraser cursed as he sent his capture weapon out and propelling himself to the roof. Once on the roof he ran toward the corner where he last saw Kenji.

From the edge of the roof, he spotted Kenji again. He let his capture weapon fly toward Kenji as he jumped off the roof.

This time he didn't miss; and he got Kenji wrapped up in his capture weapon tightly. Eraser then tied it off attaching it to a huge metal pole; with Kenji hunging about 2 feet off the ground.

“It's over Kenji.” Eraser approaches him as Kenji swears and continues to struggle.

“DO you really think it's all over EraserHead? Or should I say Shouta Aizawa.” Kenji said. He took pleasure when Eraser froze for a second upon hearing his name.

“For you it is.” Eraser grabbed Kenji pulling him closer. Eraser's voice got really low. “You are going to pay for what you have done to my student.”

“Huh, what are you going to do anyway? Don't heroes have a no killing motto or something like that.” Kenji huffed rolling his eyes.

“Besides even if you did want to torture me you don't have time too. Because as we speak your little protegee is bleeding out on the ground.”

“IT'S YOUR FUCKING FAULT HE IS LIKE THAT TO BEGIN WITH!” Eraser yelled, taking his knife out. He grabbed a handful of Kenji's hair and cuts it off; like how Kenji did to Shinsou.

“Looks like you saw the video I made. Too bad you saw it before I intended you to; I wanted you to find it taped to the door of your shitty little agency.” Kenji chuckles as he maintained eye contact with Eraser.

Eraser ignored him reaching in his pocket and grabbed a handful of caltrops and tossed them under Kenji.

He wanted to beat the shit out of Kenji right here and now. He would have too; but right now, Shinsou needs him.

He clenched his teeth trying to ignore Kenji's taunting. As He turned to walk away, Kenji spoke louder.

“You’re digging too deep into something you shouldn't and I'm not just talking about my business. If I were you, a dying protegee would be the last of my worries.”

Eraser turned around furiously stabbing Kenji in the shoulder with his knife.

“IF HE DIES, I WILL KILL YOU! I DON'T CARE IF THE COPS ARE HERE, YOU’RE NOT LEAVING HERE ALIVE IF SHINSOU DIES!”

Kenji cries out in pain, and Eraser wipes the blood off his blade, putting it back in it’s sheath.

Normally Eraser would have just knocked the villain out, but Kenji needs to suffer for what he did to Hitoshi.

Eraser takes off at a run heading back to where Shinsou is; ignoring all the curses Kenji throws his way. On the way he calls for an ambulance.

‘Please be ok, Shinsou…’

Eraser rounds the counter to see Panther as the far end of the alley dragging Hanzo who is now visible and unconscious to a nearby pole.

Seeing that Panther had it handled; Eraser ran over and dropped down at Shinsou's side.

Shinsou condition was worse than he thought...

Shinsou was unconscious, he was still breathing but his breath was still rapid. He was pale and losing blood from the gunshot wound.

“I'm here now Shinsou.” Eraser saw the fabric Panther put on Shinsou wound was now dyed red. As he leaned over putting presser on the wound in attempt to stop the bleeding.

It's taking everything within himself to keep it together; if he had only searched this area better, instead of running to see what panther found: then he could have stopped this happening.

If only he had an ambulance on standby with the cops, then they could have been helping Shinsou now…

He had hoped that they would find Shinsou here but logically speaking he didn't think they would.

If that was the case, he didn't want to drag the paramedics into this if they could be helping people elsewhere rather than just waiting around for another one of his dead ends to pan out.

He whole hearty regrets that decision now...

Shouta’s eyes widen as Shinsou starts to stir. He can tell Shinsou is trying to fight this, if he can regain consciousness, it would be for the best.

Yes he will be in pain, but in the long run it can make a difference.

“Shinsou wake up.” He did the best he could to encourage it. “I'm here for you like I promised I would be. I've found you, just open your eyes please!”

“SHINSOU CAN YOU HEAR ME?” After a few more tries Shouta starts to get desperate calling out his protegees name.

It feels like if he can't get through to him right now he might just lose him forever...

“HITOSHI!” Shouta shouted almost on the verge of tears. His work must have paid off because a second later Shinsou slowly opened his eyes.

“Oh... Sensei you found me? Are you really here to save me???” Hitoshi said blinking his eyes. Shouta gets a sigh of relief, but then Shinsou starts to drift again. “It's a nice dream at least...”

“It's Not a dream Shinsou. You need to stay awake, you've been shot. The paramedics will be here any minute.” Eraser increased presser on Shinsou's wound.

“Y-you know I've been shot a lot...and it sucks...b-but it really hurts like hell when it has real bullets.” Shinsou squints as he looks at Shouta.

He knows from what Midoriya said that at the kidnapping site they used darts on the teens, but it sounds like Shinsou was shot more than just that.

Just how many times has he been shot? Is what is going through Shouta's mind.

Eraser puts his thoughts aside, he'll have plenty of time to think later.

“I know you have been through a lot Shinsou, and you want to rest but you need to stay awake just a little longer.” Shouta tried to get shinsou to keep his eyes open.

Then he heard someone approaching them. He turned his head to see it was just Panther; so Shouta turned his attention back to Shinsou.

“I th-thought I might die dozens of times, b-but I couldn't a-accept it... but to think j-just when I get r-rescued I might die right h-here.” Hitoshi stutters.

“Shinsou you’re not going to die. You have come this far on your own. Now I'm here to help you. You can make it.” Shouta tried to reassure him. In the distances he can hear the sound of sirens.

Panther stepped closer. “Yea, hang in there kid. I still haven't been able to apologized to you yet for failing you the last time.”

Shinsou's eyes lose their focus with tears start running down his face, as Shinsou's eyes drift shut. “HITOSHI!!!” Shouta yelled.

This can be happening; it just can't. Hitoshi has to live he can't die, not right now, not like this.

He shouted Shinsou's name a few more times but the kid was unresponsive. There was so many things running though his head right now.

He doesn't know how out of it he was until Panther put his hand on his shoulder. “Hey Eraser the paramedics are here, you'll need to move so they can do their job.”

That got his attention, he looked up and saw a pair of paramedics rushing over to where they were.

One of them lays a stretcher on the ground next to Shinsou. And the other paramedic comes up next to him. “Good job. We can take it from here.”

Shouta just nods and backs off. He watches them as long as he can; Shinsou was in critical condition so they wasted no time loading him in the back of the ambulance.

Shouta just stands there watching it drive away when Panther speaks up.

“It will be ok, he is in capable hands now. Here this is to wipe your hands off.” Panther handed him a small rag.

Shouta takes it and wipes the blood off his hands. He huffs there's nothing else he can do for Shinsou.

All he can do now is move back into work mode.

Because when he is on the job, he is no longer Shouta Aizawa; he is Pro Hero EraserHead.

Chapter 4: All that Matters

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

EraserHead turns to Panther. “What happened with the man in the warehouse?”

“Oh yea, I knocked him out and tied him up. I left him back at the warehouse; he was one of the guys from the flash gang.” Panther reached down to pick up his backpack.

“Whoa! Did Kenji shoot you earlier?” Panther’s eyes widen; locking onto Eraser arm.

Eraser looks down at his arm, at this point he can't really feel much pain because right now everything just feels so numb.

“Yea, I'm fine it just grazed me. First, I’ll get some cops over here to pick up Kenji and Hanzo then we can fan out and finish searching the area.”

“Ok, but while we wait let me take a look at your arm. If nothing else I have some bandages at least let me wrap it.” Panther said, but Eraser just shook his head. He can just wrap it with a piece of his capture weapon.

Panther glanced at Eraser. “Did you forget our long-standing deal?”

Eraser wanted to turn him down but the look Panther gave him remind him of one of their first few encounters.

Back then Eraser was pretty sure Panther was still a teenager, he was badly injured and refused medical attention.

Long story short, Panther agreed that Eraser could help him then and there, but that sometime in the future he would do the same.

“Ok, fine go ahead.” Eraser huffed. Panther grinned knowing full well what he did.

“Yea, it’s not that bad. But this will at least stop the bleeding.” Panther finished bandaging his arm.

Then they both walked over to where Kenji was.

“Since your back with your pal Panther, that must mean Shinsou isn't here anymore. But since you came here, somewhat calm, I'm guessing he's not dead.” Kenji sneered.

“KENJI YOU FUCKING BASTARD! DO YOU WANT TO DIE? BECAUSE IF YOU DO, I CAN ARRANGE THAT!” Panther yelled as Eraser just stood next to him dead silent.

“Yea, do me a favor and make it quick. I know too many people who would like to keep their identity's secret. Even if I would never say anything; if I go to jail, I won't last a week there.”

Kenji chuckles; but the expression on his face said that he was dead serious.

Panther stood there speechless, but Eraser ran forward and started throwing punches.

“DO you think I'm going to let you off that easy after what you did to Shinsou?!”

After about a minute of him not letting up Panther came up behind Eraser pulling him away. “That's enough the cops are here.”

“You are dam lucky I didn't kill you right here. Enjoy your pain, for however long you have left.” Eraser glared at Kenji; then he looked toward the four officers approaching them.

“If you let him down for us EraserHead, we can take it from here.” The highest-ranking officer of the group asked.

“Yea.” Eraser took one more look at Kenji.

He cleared out the caltrops then he grabbed the other side of his capture weapon, and let Kenji to the ground.

As he was being cuffed Kenji had one thing left to say.

“Eraser you may have caught me, but there are a lot more people who would do anything they can to get their hands on you. And that kid too. If you don’t want to end up like me then watch your back.”

“Shut Up!” One of the officers yelled pulling Kenji to a stand, and they walked him to the cop car.

Kenji just grinned. “Fine, but be careful with my shoulder I have a fresh stab wound as you can see.”

After Kenji was secured in the police car; the details of everything after that went by like a blur.

Yes, Eraser was there in the moment and did his job just fine. But anytime he had time to stop and think; his mind would to wander to his injured student.

*~~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~~*~~~~~*

Shouta leaned the back of his head against the wall as he sat in an uncomfortable chair in the hospital waiting room.  He was sitting there just thinking about how everything had wrapped up…

When they went over to where Hanzo was; he had regained consciousness and it was the normal MO of insulting/swearing at Panther, Eraser and the cops. But it was still quite tame in comparison to that of what Kenji did.

Once Hanzo was taken into custody; Panther and EraserHead along with eight cops who came as backup, started searching for any remaining villains.

They found a seaplane that belonged to Kenji at one of the docks. There was file boxes and a few bags full of cash from 3 different countries.

Including the guy Panther knocked out earlier in the warehouse, they had found 5 members of the flash gang on the island.

One of them was already unconscious in the back of the van. Another gang member who was found in the van too, claimed that Shinsou did it when he escaped.

The man’s condition along with what the paramedic confirmed; he was just in a deep sleep. After seeing this Eraser knew it was highly likely that it was Shinsou’s doing.

This incident reminds Shouta of the many times him and his student had played around with different applications for Shinsou’s quirk.

This specific move was one that Shinsou was considering making into one of his special combat moves, as he could easily get multiple opponents out of the way and he could even control how they were out for.

The kid said it was too bad that he couldn’t use his quirk on himself. Because if he could then he would have an effect of way to combat his insomnia and win every time.

It was moments like that the kid reminded Shouta of Shirakumo; the friend that he had lost long ago… Shouta put his head in hands.

‘Please be ok Shinsou. I don’t know what I would do if you died too.’

He had been an utter mess this week as Shinsou kept slipping through his fingers.

However in the back of his mind there was still that possibility that he could get Shinsou back.

But that won’t be the case if Shinsou dies…

“You better have got your arm looked at by the doctors. We both know you don’t take good care of yourself on a normal basis let alone recently. So, I won’t be leaving here until you do Shouta.”

Nemuri eyed his arm as she walked up to him.

“I see, Panther has met up with you.” Shouta sighed sitting up looking at her.

“Yes, he did and your new ‘intern’ told me everything. I know Detective Tsukauchi is letting you debrief later, so you can be here…"

Nemuri leveled him with a look. "But why did you have to leave out an important detail like you getting shot?”

“I knew you would be like this if you heard.” Shouta rolled up his sleeve, revealing freshly healed pink skin. “The nurses wouldn’t let me into this waiting room until I got my own wounds looked at first.”

“Why do you do this to me? And Hizashi too.” Nemuri sighs and sits down in the seat next to him.

Then she puts her hand on her forehead. “You probably wouldn’t even write about your injuries in your case reports if you weren’t required to…”

“Your probably right.” Shouta said just above a whisper.

He knows how much his friends care about him. But old habits die hard; at least this time he let the doctors take care of the injury.

“Hell, yea I am. And it’s a miracle that none of your students this far have learned this bad habit of yours. Although there are a few from your class this year that makes me question that fact…” Nemuri huffed.

“I’m sorry, Kayama.” Shouta apologized. Nemuri nodded and closed her eyes. “I know Shouta… it’s just been a hard week for all of us too.”

A few minutes of silent passed then Nemuri spoke again. “So, any updated news about Shinsou’s condition yet?”

“Not really… however, when the doctor was working on my arm, one of the nurses said it’s thanks to one of the paramedics who was on the scene and used his quirk was  that Shinsou has made it this far.” Shouta paused, as he looked up at the clock.

“…and the surgery should have been over half an hour ago.”

“Oh…” Nemuri frowned, not knowing what to say to that. Shouta looked at the celling. “How did it go on your end?”

“It went pretty well over all. The last-minute raid planning took a little longer; since we didn’t want your little informant Kit to get caught up in all the chaos from the raid.”

Nemuri rubbed her chin. “But in the end, it really wasn’t needed because that kid stayed out of sight.”

“We arrested the 5 remaining members of the flash gang. Panther showed up toward the end to help. It was a good thing too; because one of them almost got away because she used her speed quirk.”

“But it was Kit who had us a little worried.” Nemuri shook her head.

“Before the raid started Detective Tsukauchi tried to contact Kit from the number that he called you from, but all he got was an out-of-service notification.”

“Anyway, the actual take down went pretty quick and other than the runner, it went good. As we cleared the building, we all looked for the kid, but we didn’t see him. But one of the other Pros found his backpack hidden away so we knew Kit was probably still there.”

“And get this; Kit had found his way to Detective Tsukauchi himself. Apparently, he was watching us the whole time, but he said that Eraserhead told him to wait for either Detective Tsukauchi or yourself, so that’s exactly what he did.” Nemuri smiled.

“At least he finally listened to me.” Shouta huffed. It was good to hear the Kit was fine. And from the way Nemuri talked she was definitely fishing for something.

Shouta had known her long enough that if he doesn’t play along then she will drag this out as long as she can.

It’s better to ask the right questions than have her beat the bush. “So how did Kit manage to stay undetected?”

“I thought you’d never ask.” A huge grin spread across her face. “It was all thanks to his quirk. Kit’s quirk lets him turn into the cutest little orange kitty cat.”

“He was in cat form until he found out which one of us was Detective Tsukauchi…"

"You know you could have at least given the kid a description of Tsukauchi, but all you told him was the Detective’s name.” Nemuri crossed her arms.

“Kit kept hanging up halfway during the phone calls. I thought he might end up leaving before we got there anyway. At least he was smart enough to find Tsukauchi on his own.” Shouta said thinking back to the phone calls.

“Smart enough? Shouta, do you know what the little kitty was doing the whole night while waiting?” Nemuri asked.

“No, but you’re probably going to tell me.” Shouta looked at her then leaned forward.

“Of course. But I got to tell you Shouta you have the knack for finding all the clever trouble makers out there.” Nemuri grinned, and Shouta just rolled his eyes.

“This kid Kit definitely took playing ‘spy’ to the next level. Not only did he get pictures of the gang members with Shinsou, he also recorded some conversations, and he temporalty disabled their van, to buy time.”

Nemuri leaned back clasping her hand behind her head. “He gave it to the Detective so we can use this key evidence for this case.”

“And to top it all off Kits only 13. Shouta, I got to tell you this kid; outperformed dozens of Rookie heroes that I have seen. And with no help or previous training at that.” Nemuri shook her head.

“If Detective Tsukauchi wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have believed him when he said he learned this stuff from just watching spy movies and reading books… oh and he is a huge Panther fan too.”  She proudly stated.

‘Great, not another problem child.” Shouta pinches the bridge of his nose.

He had a feeling Kit might be like this, but this just confirms his thoughts.

Just then a nurse opens a door and walks up to them. “Mr. Aizawa from UA?”

“Yes?” Shouta sits up straight, Nemuri doing the same next to him.

“I came to let you know that your student Shinsou Hitoshi is out of surgery. We moved him from recovery into a private room in the hero wing as pre request from Detective Tsukauchi.” The nurse said flipping through some papers on a clip board.

“The good news is he isn’t in critical condition anymore. But we will know more once he wakes up.” She said then frowned.

“However, the Doctors did run into a few complications. He had severe bruising on his left shoulder where the gunshot wound was."

"And since they had to treat his bruising separately, the doctor wasn’t able to use a quirk to heal the gunshot wound. They have gotten his gunshot wound taking care of, but it will have to heal the old fashion way; with time.”

“There a few more things to note but none of it is really life threating. And you seem to be eager to see him, so I can show you to his room before continuing if you would like.” She flashed a smile.

“Yes. We would, thank you.” Nemuri answered. The nurse nodded and asked them to follow her. Shouta didn’t say much as his mind was racing.

Once they got to the room and Shouta saw Hitoshi; He was still unconscious with his left arm in a sling strapped to his side.

Hitoshi looked far from great, but the kid looked a lot better than he did a few hours ago.

The nurse continues where she left off from telling them about Shinsou’s current condition.

Shouta listens and nods when necessary, but not once taking his eyes of his student. He knows it’s not very logical but, it feels like if he did the Shinsou might just disappear.

Shouta knows there is still a lot of uncertainly ahead of them but as long as Shinsou is ok, that is all that matters right now.

Chapter 5: MindJacks' Future

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Shouta takes deep breath of the cool night air as he lights up a cigarette; with the thought of his student still heavy on his mind.

It’s already been about a day since the kid was rescued. Shinsou had woken up a few times; but it was clear he was in a daze, and he passed out again after a few minutes.

He couldn’t quite comprehend what was going on, but Shinsou would yell and kept ripping the bandages off so he could get away. Then he would pass out for a few more hours.

The doctors said it isn’t uncommon for patients who went through what he did, for this to happen. They said he should break out of this cycle and wake up soon. And once that happened, he probably won’t remember any of this.

But to Shouta that doesn’t matter, all he can see right now is how Shinsou is still spiraling; thinking he has to get away from his kidnappers.

He was severely injured and halfway starved, on top of who knows what kind of trauma that the kid had to face alone, and he is still trying to fight.

It hurts Shouta to watch; even his words don’t seem to be getting to Shinsou.

And after Shinsou’s most recent episode a few hours ago, the doctors put a leather cuff on his free hand. Because that time when it was just the nurses in the room running some tests; Shinsou ripped the IV out of his arm and he made it out the door.

Shouta was nearby when he heard the commotion and he reached Shinsou just in time to catch him before he collapsed in the hallway. The whole thing was a very stressful ordeal for all of them.

Shouta blew one last puff of smoke before he puts his cigarette out. For the most part he tries to keep this bad habit of his under control. Since he started to work at UA a few years ago he has definitely curbed most of it.

Only picking up one here or there; maybe in the middle of a tough case or after an undesirable out come on a case.

But all the ups and downs involved with Shinsou’s kidnapping case; Shouta thinks that he has probably smoked enough this last week to match or exceed what he would normally do in the past.

Shouta takes one last look over city lights from the hospital roof, then he heads back in.

It took him longer than it should have to recognize just how much Shinsou means to him. And if Shinsou still wants to travel the path to becoming a hero after this then Shouta wants to continue be there to train Shinsou to the best his ability.

But in the back of his mind Shouta is trying to prepare himself too. He has had students in the past drop out from just seeing this dark side of hero work; let alone having to live through it.

He wouldn’t blame Shinsou if he didn’t want to continue after this. But Shouta doesn’t think Shinsou would be one to drop out.

Another factor he has to think about is; Shinsou might not even have a choose in the matter. His parents might decide to pull him out of UA.

Detective Tsukauchi had already informed Shinsou’s parents that they had found him. But they won’t be coming up until tomorrow morning. Because the Detective has to work though some red tape to make that happen…

Once the bounty on Shinsou went out; a few criminals had been spotted and arrested near Shinsou’s house. And three days ago, a villain broke into their house.

The cops got there before he left and arrest him; but the damage was already done. And for their safety Detective Tsukauchi put Shinsou’s parents under 24-hour police protection at a safehouse.

At the time it was already hard enough for Mr. and Mrs. Shinsou to deal the possibly of never seeing their son again; but thanks to Kenji’s bounty they couldn’t even grieve.

Shouta won’t even try to guess how it is going for them right now; one day they are told that their son was kidnapped by a quirk trafficker and not coming back. Then not even a week later and their house is broken into and by villain wanting to take their already missing son.

Shouta steps onto the elevator. At least they didn’t have all the details about how everything played out along with the mental whiplash that he has been dealing with…

He still hasn’t recovered from that yet. Shouta has always known this but this is definitely the reason why they say don’t mix your hero work with your personal life.

Sadly, this is one of those circumstances where there was no chose involved. Kenji and his crew dug deep, all for the sake of revenge.

It’s that fact alone that Shouta knows this was unavoidable. He had his chance in the past; he failed and Keji got away.

This time Shouta was able to take Kenji and Hanzo down… But at what cost?

Shinsou’s future? No… its more than that; it almost cost the Kid his life. Either way what happen has changed things.

And If Shouta wasn’t there; Shinsou would have died or if he had survived, he would have been forced to work for Kenji…

The elevator came to a stop and the doors open. Shouta shakes his head to get those thoughts out of his head and steps out.

Tsukauchi wanted to leave some of his officers to help keep Shinsou safe from any potential threats, but Shouta didn’t think it was necessary with him there.

But in the end they came to an agreement. The officers stay, but when Shouta is in the room with Shinsou they watch over the whole floor instead of staying glued to the doorway.

Once he gets close to Shinsou’s room; Shouta nods to the officer that was guarding Shinsou’s room. He nods back and heads to the other side of hall.

When Shouta opens the door; he saw Shinsou desperately trying to free his hand. The kid didn’t even look up when the door closed behind Shouta.

Shouta wasn’t sure if the kid was having another episode or not, but he wanted to try anyway. “Shinsou?”

Unlike all the previous times when Shinsou wouldn’t respond and would keep doing whatever he was; Shinsou froze then he slowly looked up.

“Sensei…” Once his eyes meet Shouta; tears start running down Shinsou’s face.

“Here I'll get that undone for you.” Shouta nods walking over to the bed and unbuckles the leather cuff.

He is relived that Hitoshi has finally woken up… But in the back of his mind Shouta was beating himself up. Of all the times to go out for some air; why did it have to be now when he wasn’t here that Shinsou wakes up.

It was clear to him, Shinsou was panicking and trying to escape. Shouta can only imagine what was going through his protégée’s head…

Shinsou wipes away the tears with his free arm then speaks up. “So... um why was I cuffed to the bed?”

He was against it in the first place; but the head doctor insisted it was necessary. Shouta had no choose in the matter, and they did it anyway.

In the end it was unnecessary. It looks like it has caused more issues than it solved. And maybe if he wasn’t cuff to the bed Hitoshi wouldn’t have started panicking…

“It was the only way the doctors could get you to stop ripping off your bandages.” Shouta sighs and sits down in a chair next to the bed.

It wasn’t a lie; but the kid didn’t need to know the details about everything that happened. Shinsou looks down at his wrapped wrist. “Oh...”

“Yea; You were pretty out of it... We should probably let the doctors know your awake.” Shouta leans over to push the call button on the bed; but Hitoshi tries to stop him.

“Can you just wait a little bit longer. I want to talk to you for a few first…” Hitoshi pleads as he side glances Shouta. “And I just don't want to be swarmed yet...”

Shouta does want Shinsou to get checked out ASAP. But it seems like Shinsou has questions, and if answering those questions can help calm his mind then that is what Shouta wants to do.

As Shouta was thinking over Shinsou’s request and he adds one last thing. “And I've held out this long just fine, so it's not like 10 or 15 more minutes are going to kill me.”

Shouta gives Hitoshi a disapproving look for his chose of words. Normally a comment like that wouldn’t bother Shouta and it’s no big deal; but it wasn’t long ago since it really was a life and death situation with his student’s life on the line.

“I can give you that; they'll probably kick me out when they come in anyway.” Shouta sat back down in his chair. If this can help the kid in the long run it will be worth it.

“Thanks.” Shinsou looks at Shouta then he looks back down. Shouta could tell the kid had a lot on his mind. When the kid is like this, it helps when he starts the conversion first then Shinsou can usually sort through his thoughts easier.

So that is what Shouta does. “How are you feeling Shinsou?”

“Hah, like I've been to hell and back again. Oh yea and getting shot... I would not recommend it; it hurts like Hell and it's probably bad for your health too.” Hitoshi looks up giving his signature shit eating grin.

“Brat.” Shouta rolls his eyes. Seeing Shinsou like normal is a good sigh.

Hitoshi smiles then he lifts his arm with the iv attached to it. “I'm fine for the most part; thanks to who knows how many drugs that are in this iv. This is probably the best I've felt all week.”

“That's good.” Shouta spoke just above a whisper. Shinsou said it in happy tone, but Shouta can only imagine just what kind of shit the kid had to live though.

Shinsou should have never had too… If only Shouta was a better Hero and he didn’t let Kenji get away last time.

He knows it’s illogical to think of what he could have done…  But the fact is that even if he did do something different doesn’t guarantee that it would have turn out any differently.

In the back of his mind, maybe there was a way that he over looked that could have prevented Kenji from kidnaping his student…

“Hey, by any chance do you got any water?” Shinsou spoke up, breaking Shouta out of his thoughts. Shouta nods and pours a bottle of water into a cup and gives it to Shinsou.

After Shinsou is done getting a drink, Shouta leans forward in his chair. He clears his throat and looks at the kid.

“I'm sorry you had to go through all this; because of me. And I'm sorry that it took me so long to find you.” There are no words that can describe what Shouta feels, but at least this is a start.

Shinsou's eyes widen, as he spoke to fast. “That's- It's fine. It's not your fault Aizawa. I was the one who should have been able to avoid it to begin with. You have trained me for situations like this before. And yea I did get away, but I wasn't good enough and I just got caught again.”

“No Shinsou. It was my fault. If I had caught Kenji before; than none of this would have happened. It was only because He was looking for someone close to me that you got tangled up in this to begin with.” Shouta sits up straight.

‘Why does the kid have to blame himself for this?’  Shouta thinks to himself.

“Even if that was the case and I had no connection to you, I still caught his eye at the sports festival. Had I not met you I wouldn't have even had a fighting chance.” Shinsou huffed. “Don't take all the blame yourself, I'm at fault too.”

“Shinsou, I'm the pro hero here and your still just a kid. You just got into the hero course and yes I have started training you for this kind of stuff. But I didn't expect this to happen... you weren't prepared for this it's not your fault.” Shouta said sternly.

“Yea, then about the USJ? And what about the training camp for that matter? Your class wasn't prepared for that either, and they still came out of it fine. On their own power for the most part too.” Shinsou made a sour face.

Shouta could read the unspoken ‘They could, but I couldn’t.’  from the look on Shinsou’s face.

“That wasn't the same thing; those are completely different scenarios than this.”  Shouta pinched the bridge of his nose.

This isn’t getting them anywhere so Shouta changes tactics. “Shinsou, I saw the video from Kenji...”

Hitoshi clenched his jaw, and looked away avoiding eye contact. It’s clear he didn’t want Shouta to see what was on it. He hopes he can just get through to the kid.

“We'll go over that later; but you need to know I'm not disappointed in you or your abilities. You did the best you could with what knowledge you had; and you held out until rescue could come.” Shouta sighs.

“All that matters now is your alive and here now. We can figure everything else out later.” Shouta said looking over to Hitoshi.

Shinsou took a deep breath, and looks back at Shouta. “Ok... I'm sorry for arguing Sensei.”

“It's fine; Just don't do it again.” Shouta shifted in his chair. He is just glad Shinsou isn’t trying to take all the blame anymore.

“Is there anything else you want to know?” Shouta asked.

“Yea...” Shinsou nods, and starts asking the questions on his mind. “So did you get Kenji?”

“Yea, we got Kenji and his partner Hanzo. We also rounded up all the flash gang members.” Shouta put his hands together leaning forward.

Shinsou looks down; before asking his next question. He looks deep in thought then he asks Shouta in a quiet voice. “How did you find me?”

“Detective Tsukauchi got a call from a kid calling himself Kit. He said he knew where you were but he wouldn't talk unless he talked to EraserHead.”

Shouta answered, as he tried to sum it up. “And after he told us what he knew; along with the phone call about the meeting place I got from you. We were able to narrow it down to two locations that were nearby.”

“So, Kit really did get me help like he said.” Shinsou mumbled. Then he looks at Shouta. “Will I be able to see and talk to him?”

“If that is what you want. I'll see what I can do.” Shouta shifts in his chair. Kit seemed like a good kid and it shouldn’t be too hard to arrange. Shinsou nods. “Thanks, Sensei.”

“You know, you’re training really did come in handy. You should really do some training exercises like that for the rest of your students too.” Shinsou smiles.

“Hmmm... Yea they could all benefit from it, I'll consider it.” Shouta sat there thinking. Shinsou must be referring to Shouta’s escape training drill that he had put the kid though.

And yea, with how this batch of students keep attracting trouble. It would be useful for them to learn; he should run this by Nedzu when he starts lesson planning.

“So, if my quirk isn't all fucked up. Will I still be in your class; 1A when I get back?”  Shinsou looked at his arm that was in the sling; when he asked his question.

“Yes. You will still be in my class; unless there is a specific reason not to.” Shouta answered as he looked over the kid again. By the way Shinsou said it; he must have been having trouble with his quirk.

“I- I'm glad to hear that.” Shinsou said still not looking up, but Shouta could see a bit of relief on his face.

Then Shinsou’s head whips over to the door right before door opened. The kid relaxed a little seeing it was only a nurse.

Shouta could hear the footsteps of the nurse before she opened the door too; but he didn’t think Shinsou would have this amount of hyper awareness. Shouta was training Shinsou to heighten this skill; but this is on a whole new level.

He could see the potential from the kid; but Shouta thought it would take at least a few more months for Shinsou to reach this point.

Then again, he didn’t expect Shinsou would be in a life and death type of situation this soon either.

“You should have called me when he woke up.” The nurse frowned turning to Shouta. Shouta just shrugs, as she calls for the doctor to come in. And she asks him to leave for time being.

Shouta stands up to walk out but before he is out the door Shinsou calls out to him. “Thanks Sensei.”

“No problem, Kid.” Shouta nodded. And he walked out as the nurse started checking Shinsou over. He feels more at ease now that Shinsou was awake.

As Shouta walked over to the waiting area; he thought about Shinsou’s question right before the nurse came in.

And he wouldn’t have asked Shinsou yet, but Shouta is glad that the kidnapping didn’t shake the kid enough to drop his pursue to be a hero.

Now Shouta knows this incident is far ideal, and he would never willingly put any of his students though this. But he knows one day in his future hero career Shinsou can look back and pull wisdom from this experience.

For himself there where some undesirable events that happened during his hero student years; that on one hand he would trade anything to change what happened on those days. But on the other hand, it’s those very events that shaped him into the hero that he is today.

From the beginning Shouta’s hope was that one day his protégée MindJack will be able to reach and surpass everything he has done as EraserHead.

Shinsou’s resolve though this whole thing; including back there in the hospital room, proves to Shouta that Shinsou is just as strong or stronger than he was at that age.

Shouta truly is proud of the kid. Shouta knows he has a long way to go; but he will work on letting Shinsou know that, so that in the future the kid will never question that again.
