Chapter Text
"What am I? A cat? A bear? A mouse?" Nedzu began the meeting, "The world may never know!"
The staff all greeted their boss, some hopeful these would be good news and other dreading what was coming next.
You never knew with U.A's principal.
"It has been decided, by both myself and the board, that U.A will start a rehabilitation program for underage villains," he announced.
These were bad news.
All Might raised his hand, "Nedzu, how will this work?"
"One student will be placed in each hero course class-"
"I'm sorry!?" Vlad interrupted.
Nedzu ignored this, "-And it will be the teacher's, and to some capacity students', responsibility to make sure they assimilate. They will receive mandatory counseling-"
Hound Dog stayed quiet, thinking, "Would've been real nice if I was consulted..."
"-But beyond that, they'll be considered regular hero course students, licensing and all. Any questions?"
Sniper intervened, "Sir, you are placing an ex-villain-"
"Uh-huh."
"-With a bunch of hero students."
"Yeah."
"What makes you think this won't end terribly?"
"I trust our students to be compassionate."
"I meant to the villains. I don't think they'll want to be around heroes constantly," Sniper pointed out.
Nedzu cackled for a few seconds, "Good luck."
"I have another question," Midnight raised her hand next.
"Go on," the principal allowed.
"How will the new students obtain hero licensing given their criminal backgrounds?"
"Oh! It's part of the reform program!" Nedzu chirped, "I have some papers that summarize the whole thing perfectly."
"So this whole meeting could've been an email?" Aizawa questioned.
"Maybe, but then you wouldn't have read it," the chimera counter-argued.
"Fair enough," Aizawa grumbled.
"Oh," Nedzu continued, "You have one week before the program starts."
They were going to need that good luck, weren't they?
Aizawa sat down with his new student's file.
- Name: Riali Suzuki
- Quirk: Memory manipulation. She can read people's minds and force people to relive their memories.
- Age: 16
- Crimes: 3 charges of assault against a hero, 7 charges of quirk misusage, 4 charges of vigilantism and 5 charges of verbal assault
- General Notes: Has an unknown affiliation with the League of Villains.
Nothing too vile it seemed on first glance.
He was slightly concerned about her knowing the League, but Vlad apparently got one of their (now) ex-members, so it could worse.
What made Nedzu think this was a good idea? Beyond him.
He finished the rest of the report rather quickly.
Suzuki was suspected to have some home issues and potentially some school ones as well.
It was unfortunate, but expected given her circumstances.
The next day, Aizawa delivered the news to his students.
"What!?" "A villain!?" "Here, at U.A?" "It feels a bit off..."
"Huh!?" "Is this really safe after the League of Villain's attacks?" "But sir! Why would Principal Nedzu allow this?"
"Because your principal is insane," Aizawa answered, "Just be grateful we didn't get Mustard."
The class was silent after that.
"Yeah," Aizawa dryly chuckled, "Wish Class 1-B good luck."
The class carried on as per usual until Aizawa finished the lesson, "Any questions?"
Yaoyorizu raised her hand, "My apologies, but this isn't about the lecture-"
"It's about the reform program isn't it?" Aizawa sighed, "Go ahead."
"Can we know.. something about the new student joining us?"
Aizawa decided he might as well say it, "Her name is Riali Suzuki and she's 16 years old. She has a few crimes under her belt, but the only charge I'll tell you of is vigilantism. The rest you'll find out when you meet her."
"C'mon, sir, not even her quirk?" Kaminari asked.
"Not even her quirk," Aizawa didn't want his students to make any quirkist assumptions, even if by accident.
"What does she look like?" Mineta enquired.
"Enough!" Aizawa raised his voice, silencing the student, "You'll find out when you meet her."
And so, Class 1-A waited until the following Monday.
Chapter Text
Aizawa entered the local police station in search of his new student, annoyed that he had to deal with Vlad King on the car ride.
An officer gave them directions to the different cells and each of the teachers headed their separate ways.
Riali Suzuki sat in a U.A uniform, a bag full of school supplies next to her.
The girl stared at the wall with an empty gaze, but remained aware of her surroundings, "Good morning."
"You noticed me faster than your classmates did on their first day, not bad," Aizawa complimented.
"I have battle experience. They didn't," she replied plainly, standing up and grabbing her bag, "I supposed we'll be going to U.A, Mr.Aizawa?"
"You used your quirk," he instantly realized.
"And your file is incomplete. It told you the components of my quirk, but not how it works."
Intrigued, Aizawa walked alongside her down the hall, "Well, how does it work?"
"I can control how I make people relive their memories, but I read minds involuntarily, and I find out everything. Every. single. detail. of. every. memory. I know everything about everyone I meet."
Aizawa remained calmed, "Can you give me an example?"
"You were born on November 8th to Tonoko and Takayori Aizawa, who named you after your maternal grandfather. Your parents moved to Hokkaido when you were young and planned for you to become a great business man like your father. You moved to Mustafu at 15, after they disowned you for refusing to continue your father's business. You worked part-time feeding the cats at a cat café called "Meowy Coffees" throughout high school, even during your internship at Purple Revolution Agency. The job started a life-long love for the animal, as they brought you comfort during a dark time in your life. You started U.A in General Studies, but earned a spot in the Hero Course after winning first place in the Sports Festival. You later went on to win third place during your second year and then first place again during your third year. Should I say more?"
"I.. I think I get the picture," Aizawa stuttered.
"And now you're thinking about how I know your whole life and you're shocked."
Aizawa nodded, "Your brain must be in constant overload."
"I've learned to live with it," Suzuki shrugged.
"Ready to go, Vlad?" Aizawa asked when they came across him and Mustard.
"J-Just, make sure the kids are in your sights okay?" Vlad replied, firmly grasping one of Mustard's hands.
The teen boy gave her a furious look and she winced when their minds were read.
- Fear
Vlad feared his student, calculating all he could do escape and attempting to keep him restrained, hence his request for help towards a person he considered a rival.
Moreover, his endeavors were laughable.
- Anger
Mustard hated heroes. She knew that, always had. He had no interest in going to a hero filled school and working with those he deemed "pretentious and entitled." He was angry and thought of a few ways him and Riali could escape, trying to convince her to play along.
She'd rather avoid the prison sentence.
- Care
Aizawa, despite his lazy attitude and seemingly uninterested appearance, cared. He cared for the stray cats on the streets, cared for his fellow teachers, even if he disliked Vlad, cared deeply for the well-being of his students. For a reason she knew objectively, but couldn't comprehend, he cared about Mustard, who he pitied, because he knew Vlad's attitude would lead to poor tutelage and he cared about.. her.
Riali opted to ignore this part of the equation. Being cared about genuinely made her feel things...
Even if they were pleasant things, she shouldn't feel anything...
Feelings led to bad things happening…
"Mustard has no immunity nor resistance against his own quirk. Using it without a gas mask would be a Kamikaze attack, so you can quit being paranoid, Vlad," Suzuki stated coldly.
"I wish I could..." Mustard grumbled.
"I know that," Suzuki steadily replied as they continued walking.
"Oh! Eraserhead!" Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi stopped them just before they left, "There's one important fact the report failed to mention-"
"That my mind reading works involuntarily?" Suzuki finished his sentence.
"..Yes," Tsukauchi confirmed, "That being said, she has excellent control of her perception altering abilities."
Aizawa raised an eyebrow, "You mean.. being able to make people relive their memories?"
"Correct."
"Geez," Vlad commented, "I think I understand why she was given to you.."
"Because you couldn't handle the girl," Aizawa snapped, "Hurry up, we're running late."
What Aizawa had truly meant to say was "Quit antagonizing my student."
Suzuki smiled.
Oh no, she was feeling things.
Vlad sat on the front of car with the driver while Aizawa was in the middle of the children.
Mustard kept trying to think of escape plans, but they'd all fail for as long as Suzuki refused to participate.
Naturally, she ignored his thoughts.
Mustard gestured at her to put a plan in motion, which did not go unnoticed by Aizawa.
Suzuki shook her head, resting it on the car window afterwards.
"Good morning, class," Iida stood at the front of the room, "As you already know, today a new student will be joining our class. Because Mr.Aizawa had to pick her up from the police station, he will be running late to class. As your class representative, I will be taking over our homeroom teacher's duties until the pair of them arrive. Please turn to page 213 of your history books and revise for Thursday's exam!"
The class simply obeyed, friendly chatter filling the air as their representative did the same from the teacher's stand.
"Same old Iida, huh?" Ashido sighed, a smile on her face.
"So, are we just going to ignore the whole 'villain-coming-to-our-school' bit?" Kaminari questioned.
"Dude, at least give her a chance! It's the manly thing to do!" Kirishima encouraged.
"Yeah right," Bakugo scoffed.
Todoroki and Midoriya studied in their corner, ignoring the gossip around them.
Shoji, who had not slept well the night before, put his head down and listened to the pair of them quiz each other, hoping that it would help him memorize the lesson.
Iida noticed his multi-armed classmate was feeling unwell and quickly went to go check on him, but the latter insisted he was fine.
Iida returned to the front of the class, "Please focus on your studies, everybody!"
Mineta ignored this, asking his fellow schoolmates if they thought this new chick would be hot.
Of course, that just happens to be the moment she enters the room.
Wavy brown hair that naturally faded to blonde grew down to her waist.
Green eyes glazed over as she inspected the class before quickly looking away.
Her uniform was put on messily, with a few creases visible and the socks rolling down on their own.
Riali felt a sudden pain strike her head as she read everybody's minds simultaneously, causing her to turn away.
Too much information was overwhelming and she hadn't handled this many people at a time for years.
There's a reason she operated at night; she wanted to avoid crowds.
Riali regained her composure in a split second, but the students did not fail to notice her odd reaction.
"Iida, please go to your seat. I'll take the lesson from here," Aizawa instructed, with the boy quickly obeying.
The kind of person to value norms and discipline deeply, and who had only been clouded from his beliefs once.
"Would you like to introduce yourself or do you want me to do it?" the teacher asked gently.
It was a method he knew from the foster care system.
Children in it often felt out of control and offering small choices helped them feel as though they had agency.
Riali couldn't tell if she appreciated it or was annoyed at Aizawa for pretending he's a parent and not a teacher.
There wasn't much of a distinction between the two in his head due to his own experiences.
"You do it," she requested, taking the only empty seat earlier than Aizawa had hoped.
"Class, this is Riali Suzuki. She's the newest member of our class, please welcome her. Yaoyorozu and Iida, as vice and representatives, I entrust you to help her adjust," Aizawa announced.
"Of course, sir," Yaoyorozu replied.
"It'll be challenging," she thought, "But I'll do our best!"
"We will complete our duty to our class, sir!" Iida responded.
"As a former villain, Suzuki will need additional support, so we will have divert plenty of our attention towards her," Iida thought, "However, we should also rely on our teachers when necessary."
“At least both have good intentions," Riali figured before taking out her history book.
"Good morning, Suzuki," Iida approached her after Aizawa fell asleep as per usual, "I'm Tenya Iida, the Class Representative. As Mr.Aizawa said, it is my responsibility to help you adjust."
"I believe he mentioned someone else, too? Yao-yo-rozu?" Suzuki questioned, trying to make conversation.
"Momo Yaoyorozu, the vice-representative," Iida clarified, pointing to her, "She's currently aiding some of our other classmates study for our next examination."
Suzuki nodded slowly.
"Feel free to come up to us for any help you may need!" he offered.
"Thanks," Suzuki accepted quietly accepted, trying to focus on the book.
"And please, wear your uniform properly."
Not being the mood to argue, she obeyed, fixing up her socks and trying to flatten the creases.
"Thank you for respecting the school," Iida bowed quickly before returning to his seat.
Afterwards, he showed Suzuki her locker and explained how they worked; she mostly listened out of politeness.
Constantly reading other people's minds was a consistent information overload when in a crowded room or area.
It made it difficult to concentrate on anything and made Suzuki feel lightheaded.
Over the years, she had learned to cope with her symptoms, but being functional did not mean she felt well.
The rest of the classes went by as any other day.
Most of the teachers were pleasantly surprised by this as they expected some more.. rebellious behavior from Suzuki.
For the record, they were correct about Suzuki wishing she was anywhere but U.A or prison.
Midnight also allowed her to skip on next day's history exam given her circumstances.
The students, in their majority, either paid Suzuki no mind (good) or occasionally thought it wasn't bad to have her in their class .
Then, there was Mineta.
He kept glancing at her from behind Midoriya and she knew it because she heard his imagination run loose with his.. perverted fantasies.
She wished that counted as sexual harassment just so she could report it.
But, apparently, 'thoughts don't harm anyone.'
Finally, it was time for their final lesson; Basic Hero Training.
"Suzuki, come with me," Yaoyorozu called out to her, "I'll show you were the changing rooms are."
"Thank you," Suzuki stated, taking her P.E clothes with her.
The girl's locker room provided the perfect space for chit chat (and a nice break from Mineta).
Besides, the information overload decreased with less than half the class in the room.
"Nice to finally meet you properly, Suzuki," Asui greeted, "My name is Tsuyu Asui, but just call me Tsu."
Genuine kindness. That's fantastic and Suzuki isn't sure whether or not that was sarcasm.
"Nice to meet you, too," she replied.
Trying to think of the best way to start a conversation, Asui asked the following question, "What made you come to U.A?"
"It was this or 30 years in prison," Suzuki shrugged, "I didn't exactly have much of a choice."
"Speaking of which, how does the Reform Program work?" Yaoyorozu enquired curiously, "Mr.Aizawa didn't say much."
"It's parole, if we prove to be good enough heroes, we're released by 18 with the added bonus that our records are wiped and we more or less have a s job secured," Suzuki explained.
"Sounds like a good deal," Uraraka commented, "I have to say, it makes sense they gave the offer to you."
You're a lot nicer than I expected and I even think we'll be friends.
She couldn't precisely blame Uraraka for her initial hesitance, but the speed at which she let down her walls couldn't be safe out in the field, could it?
"I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks," Suzuki responded.
"Ah! I-I'm sorry if-"
That sounded more offensive in real life than in my mind.
"It's fine," the ex-vigilante could take caution. She was used to it, "I took it as a compliment anyway, right?"
Uraraka let out a sigh of relief, although that didn't stop Yaoyorozu from thinking she'd have to scold Uravity later.
She would've told Yaoyorozu to drop it, but she didn't want to startle them with her quirk.
She knew how quickly people changed their thoughts of her when they found out.
Instead, Suzuki headed out early, already in her gym uniform.
"Nice to meet you, Symbol of Peace," she walked silently.
He wasn't transformed, his true form having been revealed at Kamino already.
"You must be the new student, right?"
"And I can confirm that your file is incomplete, Mr.Yagi."
