Chapter Text
It’s the last period of the day and it was the dreaded math class. Yugi tried to stay alert and pay attention to what the teacher was saying, but then his thoughts started to wander. With a pencil in his hand, he began to draw a dark magician in the corner of his notebook.
It looks a little silly in his opinion, but still looks pretty decent even when drawn from his memory.
“What are you doing, Yugi?” Yami’s form materialized next to him as he curiously leaned over his shoulder to look at the notebook page.
“Ah!” Yugi almost jumped out of his seat in surprise, but couldn’t stop the sound that escaped from his mouth. Some of the students in class turned their heads to look at where the noise came from.
“Muto Yugi, perfect timing. Please answer the question on the board,” the teacher said with a small frown on her face.
“Or did you not pay attention to what I’m teaching?”
A few students snickered at that. Joey Wheeler, who was sitting on the other side of the room glared at the people that laughed at his friend and they immediately became quiet.
“I- um,” Yugi stuttered.
Yami turned to look at the blackboard and quickly did a calculation in his head. It’s a simple multiplication with some fractions, but with Yugi in a state of a small panic his partner probably couldn’t focus well.
“It’s one divided by three.” Yami helpfully said. His calming voice immediately brought Yugi back into the present.
“It’s- um, one divided by three.” Yugi repeated what was said to him and the teacher nodded her head. “That’s correct. Do pay attention next time, Muto.”
She then went back to teaching while some students stopped paying attention to him. Yugi let out a sigh of relief that he’s no longer the center of attention… again.
“That really surprised me you know- and thanks for the save there.” Yugi said through their mind link and Yami quickly became guilty for almost causing trouble for Yugi.
“My apologies, I was too curious.” If the spirit knew that Yugi could see him pouting, he'd never hear the end of it. A small smile appeared on Yugi’s face and he teasingly elbowed his partner.
Oh hey, spirit elbow. The out-of-body experience!
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it! I was just teasing you.”
“I- of course.”
Yugi started to talk with the spirit after that as the voice of his teacher almost became a noise in the background. When it was apparent that Yugi was starting to slip from the lesson, Yami immediately pulled him back and even taught a bit of math himself.
Turns out there was math in ancient egypt.
The bell rings, signaling the end of school day. The teacher finally left the classroom and everyone was starting to collect their notebooks. Then some students were excitedly checking their phones while talking about the latest duel monster news.
Joey came over to Yugi's desk and gave him a quick noogie, which was then followed by a small ‘eek’ .
“I thought I was gonna lose you back then Yug!”
“You made it sound like a life and death situation.” Yugi playfully smacks Joey’s hand away and grins.
“Nah, but I mean that teacher was scary. Anything could happen,” Joey stood up to his full height and slinged the backpack over his shoulder.
“Ready to leave?”
“Just give me a few minutes-”
The sound of excited chatter came from the front of the classroom as people seemed to flock around something.
“Huh, what’s that all about.” Joey said out loud as Tea and Tristan started to walk towards them. Their backpacks on their chairs.
“Looks like there’s a new scoop of duelist news.” Tristan said while looking in the direction where people are gathering.
“Eh, probably a gossip or whatever-”
A voice rang out from the circle and excitedly said for everyone still in the classroom that hadn’t gone home yet to hear. “Secrets of Muto Yugi’s undefeated wins revealed. Hot scoop!”
The four looked at each other and the fifth (transparent) person appeared again next to Yugi’s side from all the noises that could be heard from his soul room.
“I take it back. I forgot our friend over here is famous.” Joey snickered while Tea didn’t look too worried.
“I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. The news can make up anything if they want to-”
Yugi was going to say something, but was cut off by another excited squeal.
“There’s a video clip!”
Oh boy. They aren’t going to put that up on the new classroom TV, are they?
Yugi placed his hands against his face in embarrassment and a comforting gesture could be felt as Yami patted his right shoulder.
“It’s both a blessing and a curse to be famous.”
“Yamiiii.”
Notes:
I was in the Yu-Gi-Oh fandom for so long, and can't believe that over the years there's so little reaction fic. There isn't even one for season 0! This is a crime against humanity. So I must!!! AAAA turns to look at the other unfinished fics and WIPs I have
Yep.
Chapter 2: Episode 1.1 "Furious Battle"
Summary:
The characters watching the beginning of Episode 1 Season 0! Plus the whole class.
Notes:
The episode is like 22 minutes long so I'm going to cut it in maybe three parts so it's easier to write! Yesss, character reacts. I'm also hoping to mix the manga with the anime so... if there's some deviation from the anime in some parts- then they're snippets of the manga as well >:D
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
It was late in the evening and for the students of Domino High School it’s time that they can finally go home and take a break from studying. However, for this class in particular something else took the interests of almost everyone as they loaded the video from the school laptop to the TV.
While some decided to go home because they had something else planned. Students from other classes that heard about the video flocked over to the classroom where Yugi and the gangs are at to watch together with their friends.
“I should probably leave,” Yugi said with a slightly embarrassed look on his face. Even though he entered many tournaments and was on television. It’s another thing to have classmates watching him from a third person perspective.
“But Yugi! Aren’t you curious about what it is?” Joey leaned closer to the desk as Yugi started to sweatdrop.
“Some space for Aibou please, Joey-”
Yami floated over to get in between the two of them, only to remember at the last second that he can’t be seen and phased right though Joey.
“Ah, right. I’m a spirit.”
Yugi was the only one that saw what happened. His body shook a tiny bit as he tried to hide his snicker as he said, “How did you forget that you’re a spirit, Yami?”
Joey blinked in confusion before something clicked in his head, “Ahh, the pharaoh was here?”
“Yeah, you went right through him.”
“Whoops, my bad.” Joey sheepishly scratched the corner of his chin.
“It’s alright, Joey.”
Joey may not hear what Yami said, so Yugi followed it to his friend so that he can understand what the pharaoh was saying as well. Joey gave a thumbs up to a direction he thought Yami was in… which was a little off by a few centimeters, but his gesture was greatly appreciated.
Tea decided to get in between them while Yami floated a distance away to avoid going right through Yugi’s friends. Ah- they’re his friends too now. He supposed.
“This could be like a movie night, Yugi! We can get the chairs and watch with you.”
“Yeah!” Tristan added with a smile.
Yugi smiled and reluctantly agreed to stay. It might not be bad either with his friends here with him during all of it.
The students took their seats and some with extra chairs from the other classrooms. Joey, Tristan and Tea also got their respectful seats around Yugi’s desk while Yami stood behind, curious about this “video” everyone was going on about.
A student in front of the class pressed the play button and the video started to play on the TV screen.
The scene panned over the desert landscape. Then cracks appeared on the stones as the archeologist found the entry way towards the hidden golden sarcophagus.
“Magnificient.”
“Thieves haven’t got this one yet!”
Many students were wondering why the video didn’t start with showing Yugi’s secret strategy guide that he practiced with to become the King of Games. Maybe even a bonus cut from tournaments that weren’t aired for the public.
“Why is this taking place in Egypt?”
“Maybe it’ll be explained later on?” There’s some murmurs in front of the class before getting shushed by their friends.
“This is… where the puzzle was found? Grandpa did tell me the origin, but it’s so odd to see it being filmed on screen.” Yugi cautiously said in a low voice that only he and his friends could hear.
“How did they even get it on camera in the first place?” Joey made a face at the thought while Yami watched in silence.
“Professor! What’s that?”
“T-this box. Could this be related to those Shadow Games we heard about-” As the professor walked closer to the mysterious sarcophagus. He started to choke and his breath became more labored.
“Oh my god, is he dying?” Someone said in the room.
“Professor!”
“You must pull yourself together!”
“That must be… the puzzle of darkness…!” His hand shook, trying to grasp in the direction of the box. Then.. he took his final breath.
Yugi blinked at the immediate death on screen and some people also looked a bit uneasy seeing it. His friends also don’t know how to feel about it other than feeling off about the whole thing.
His hands automatically went to touch the millennium puzzle that was hanging from his neck in hopes that it might comfort him. It did help a little bit.
Yami placed a hand on Yugi’s shoulder to get him to relax. Yugi glanced behind him and gave the spirit a small smile in return.
“I hope this isn’t a crime documentary,” Another classmate said with a small shudder.
“It’s lunchtime!”
“Let’s play basketball!”
“I’ll ask some girls to play.”
It’s the scene of Domino High School and there’s students eager to go and play outside. Before it cuts over to a younger Yugi Muto who’s currently sitting alone, building a tower of cards.
“It’s our High School!”
“Oh hey that’s us!” The two friends grinned while one pointed at the screen. The others around them look annoyed from the interruption, but I mean, if you’re on screen you’d be excited too.
“Hey, Yugi!”
Yugi looked over from his house of cards and it was then that they all fell over. He looks really sad.
“It’s Yugi! And he’s so tiny.”
Yugi blushed at the comment from somewhere in class. He did remember stacking cards from boredom.
“Quit playing by yourself and come play basketball with us for a change, will ya?” The student said while spinning the basketball on his finger.
“That’s some mad skills.”
“Oooh, wait is that me?” The student who said that was the same guy on screen and he giddy bounced in his chair.
“W-well, no thanks… the team I join usually ends up losing…” Yugi looked a bit sheepish.
“Why does Yugi's voice sound so cute?”
“He’s literally squeaking!”
Some students turned to look at the person in question with a teasing expression on their faces. While some just stared at the screen dumbfounded. He looks so different from the present!
Yugi groaned into his hands while his face slowly became red in embarrassment, “I haven’t hit puberty yet.”
“You do sound very cute, Yugi.” Tea said with a small giggled followed by Joey and Tristan nodding along.
“Not you guys too!” He looked up from where he was hiding and started to pout.
“You sound adorable, Aibou.” Yami decided to join in too as he made Yugi’s hair into an arm rest and mush his cheek on top. A commendable feat because of Yugi’s wild hair. Though Yami currently weighs nothing and was just floating so the spikes didn’t do anything to him.
“Traitor!”
“That’s true.” The guy then ran out of the classroom and called out to his friends that were waiting for him.
“Alright, let’s go guys!”
“Okay!”
“Mmm, it’s the thought that counts.” The guy’s friend said and patted his shoulder as the friend suddenly looked sad.
There’s a few nods here and there.
The scene then shows Yugi alone in his classroom during the lunch break and carefully gathering the cards into a small pile.
“I’d like to play my kind of games with everyone once in a while…”
“I always bring so many games with me to school too.” Yugi seemed a bit sad on screen, but then he quickly perked up.
“Aww, poor Yugi.”
'Where are all the sympathy years ago?' Yugi groaned to himself as he was forced to watch himself and remember the less-than-stellar past.
“Oh yeah!”
“I’m gonna finally finish that today.” Yugi brought his backpack up to his desk and pulled out the golden box that was shown at the start of the video.
“It’s the treasure I always carry with me! My greatest treasure lies within this box.”
“So I must keep it a secret.”
Immediately the room goes quiet as the item was revealed on screen. If you strained your ears, perhaps a sound of pin dropping could be heard from a couple rooms over. Was it possible that there's other classes that also stayed at school late?
“Wasn’t that the same box that killed that professor…?”
“Yugi has that?”
Some heads were turned to look at Yugi while his friends protectively sat around him in a circle. He awkwardly started to laugh and rubbed the back of his neck.
“I-I did, yeah. Though nothing bad happened to me though.”
His friends inconspicuously looked into other directions while Joey whistled a small tune while staring at the ceiling.
“...Probably.”
Yami grimaced in response. It was a saving grace that Yugi couldn’t see his expression at the moment because of their current position. He could remember that something happened after the puzzle was solved, but it was such a long time ago that he can’t remember much.
Though he did remember being a little… murdery.
“And here’s the quiz! What lies in this box is something you can see, yet you have never seen it.”
“Now, what could that be?”
“Hmm, what could that be?” Most people were putting the pieces together that maybe Yugi solved the puzzle and that’s how he got so good at games, but Yugi was already a game fanatic even before he had that pendant hanging from his neck.
Maybe it’s… experience? Or money.
“And the answer is…”
Before Yugi could say the answer, Joey snatched the box from Yugi and wondered why he was talking to himself.
Yugi then blinked in surprise.
“Joey!”
“Yugi, what’cha talkin’ to yourself for?” He turned the box around in his hand with an unimpressed look on his face.
“Aw, man. Why did they have ta show this part? Not one of my best moments,” Joey huffed and crossed his arms together as he continued to watch. A little off putting by what was shown on TV.
“What you can see, but can’t see? You ain’t makin’ sense at all.”
“G-give that back!”
Yugi jumps up from his seat and tries to get Jounouchi to return it, but Joey holds the box up high so Yugi can’t reach it. Then he threw the box in the air, jumping over a desk and catches it.
“Rude!”
“You’re the one to talk. You also bullied him before.”
Yami bristled and his back up straight as he zeroed in on the person who said it.
Joey looked down at the table and felt guilty with how he acted in the past. It’s a miracle that Yugi was such a forgiving person that they’re currently friends now. Even entering competitions and saving the world! It was a crazy ride.
How did they even get this on footage anyway. Seriously, how did they not see a camera recording them?
“It’s okay Joey, I already forgave you,” Yugi saw the expressions on his friend’s face and came to reassure him of their friendship. Joey turned to look at Yugi and his shoulder relaxed a bit, “Thanks, Yug.”
“Man, caring so much for a box like this…”
“You know, Yugi.”
“It’s that part of you that really annoys me, so I’m gonna have to put you through some trainin’ so you can be a man!” Joey looked really confident as he said it.
“Who even says that?”
“Aye! Watch it pipsqueak.” It looks like Joey is back to being his old self and cussed out the person from the right side of the classroom. They immediately squeaked out an apology and turned back to watch the screen.
“How ‘bout it? Ya want this box back, right?” Joey had a smug grin on his face as he shook the box.
“Then come at me with all you got!”
“I hate fighting and violence!” Yugi shouted at Joey at the top of his lungs and Joey squeezed his eyes and ears shut while also yelling how loud Yugi’s being.
Some laughed at this and even Yugi was smiling at his past self. He did try to stand up to Joey, but violence isn’t really his thing.
“I could totally kick your butt now, Joey. My other self taught me some basic self-defense in case card games aren’t an option,” Yugi said with an air of confidence and this made Joey want to ruffle Yugi’s hair again.
Which also went right through the spirit’s head and he let out a displeased noise… if anyone asked, he didn’t make any sound. Not at all.
“Gah! Stop messing with my hair.” Yugi fixed up his hair back to its original form while Joey laughed.
“I’m always gonna be here to protect you, Yugi.”
“Aww, Joey.”
Yami smiled at the interaction between the two friends. It’s great that Yugi has someone other than him that’s looking out for him.
“You may not have any guts, but you sure got a freakin’ loud voice!”
“Anyway, just give me back that box!”
“That’s right. Knock it off, Joey!” It’s Tristan that entered the frame with a serious expression on his face.
“It’s me!”
“Yes, Tristan. It’s you on screen.” Joey let out a sigh while Tristan's eyes sparkled at seeing himself ON screen.
“Oh! Did ya say something?” Joey took a step closer and a sly smile appeared on his face, “Tristan, the first year wanting to ‘make the school a better place’ by running for Student Council president.”
“But ended up rejected and falling to Janitor Patrol!”
Tristan looked pensive and a small sweatdrop slid down his face, “It’s not ‘Janitor Patrol’... it’s called the ‘Beautification Patrol’!”
“Are you sure that’s a thing?”
Someone in the classroom just shrugged.
Joey squished his hand on his left ear and squinted, “Your voice is friggin’ loud, too!”
“Right, just as you said. I was not elected as the Student Council president, but I have instead been reborn as an even bigger human being!” He looked super smug for some reason.
“As a Beautification member, I-” Whatever Tristan was saying got completely overshadowed by Joey and became a white noise in the background.
“By the way, what’s in this box?”
“Oh my god, Tristan totally got overshadowed by these two.” A loud snicker came from most people in class.
Tristan clutched his hand tightly as he shook them, “I haven’t forgotten about such disrespect.”
Both Yugi and Joey let out an awkward laugh.
“Y-you can take a look, but don’t lose anything!” Yugi looked a bit nervous and scared that Joey might do something to the box.
“It’s really important to me!”
“-so I can spread peace around the world. Hey! Are you even listening?!” Tristan’s back was to the camera, but Joey can clearly be seen peeking into the golden box.
“They totally didn’t listen to you, Tristan.” Tea said while shaking her head.
“Well, you weren’t the most interesting thing at the time,” Joey leaned back in his chair and laid his arms back as a head rest.
“I wasn’t!? What, that box is more important than me?”
“Yeah? Why wouldn’t it be?”
“GUH, I can’t believe you, Joey.”
In Yugi’s mind, he thought more of what Joey said and smiled. So he did think that the puzzle was interesting… in Joey’s way.
“He did help you in the end, Yugi. Even if he caused the piece of the puzzle to go missing in the first place.” Yami might be a little petty revealing the fact… okay, he’s still petty about it.
Yugi paused as he processed what Yami just said to him.
“He what?”
“What the heck? This is boring.” Joey had a deadpanned look on his face as he closed the box.
A hand took the box from Joey as Tea walked into the screen. She looked so done dealing with the boys.
“Tea!” Three voices said at the same time. Yugi looked really happy to see her here.
“If you think it’s boring, then just give it back to him already.”
"Tea!"
Tea has a proud look on her face.
“Besides, you’re the boring one for bullying the weak!” Tea looked really mad as she stared down at the two boys.
“No one’s bullying the weak. I was just teaching Yugi how to be a man-” Joey said with a sweatdrop trailing the side of his face.
“Shut your mouth!”
“Eh-” Joey and Tristan immediately took a step back.
“Hot dang, Tea. You got guts.”
“Oooooh, snap.”
Tea seemed a bit embarrassed now that their classmates could watch it happening on screen. She may have been a bit strict at those two, but what else can she do? She was upset at them for bullying Yugi.
“Miho-chan?” Tristan said in surprise as he saw her at the classroom door.
“Ah, sorry! That wasn’t directed at you, Miho.” Tea said to reassure her friend.
“That sure surprised me!”
“Oh, we haven’t seen Miho in so long. She’s moved to another school right?” Tea mused to herself as she tapped the bottom of her lips with her finger.
“That’s true. Huh, we haven't contacted her as much since then, have we?”
“I wanted to eat lunch, but there’s still so many people in line…” Miho said with a disappointed look on her face. Then suddenly, Tristan came up to her with an eager step.
“That’s no good. I’ll go get something for you right now!”
Then Joey also got up to Miho’s right side and suggested he wanted to go with them.
“Wait up, I’ll go with you!”
But the two ran off without waiting for Miho, leaving the two girls watching them running off to who knows where.
“Those two are hopeless.” Tea muttered.
“... I’m not sure if that’s Tristan wanting to get on Miho’s good grace or them escaping from Tea.”
“Probably both.”
Joey let out a small groan, feeling like the universe is out to get them. Film him on his good side. Not him running away like a coward.
The scene then cuts off to the two boys walking on the connected pathway between buildings.
“Damn it! She annoys me so much.” Joey cursed out loud for his friend to hear.
“Language!”
“Like you’re the one to talk about language, Tristan!” Joey jumped over to where Tristan was sitting and he let out a yelp of surprise.
The rest of the class decided to ignore this.
“Don’t talk badly about Miho-chan!”
“Who was talking about Miho Nosaka?! It’s Masaki, Anzu Masaki!” Then it zoomed over to their faces. Clearly seeing the displeasure on Joey’s face and Tristan’s worried one.
“Hmph, who’s ‘bullying the weak’ ?”
A huge figure walked into their path and his huge body immediately halted the two boys in their tracks as they collided with the taller person.
“Oh no, I know the guy.”
“Ah-” Tristan looked up and his eyes widened in recognition.
The camera then pans over to Ushio. His glare is unnerving and dangerous, “What was that about bullying, you two?”
“He looks so intimidating!”
“That was Ushio, wasn’t it?”
Joey, Tristan, and Yugi suddenly get goosebumps as they finally see the person they haven’t seen in years.
“Urgh, that guy.” Joey said in disdain and stopped hitting Tristan in the head. While Yugi gingerly rubbed his arm to manage his fraying nerves.
“I’m… I’m actually not sure what happened to him, but I haven’t seen him since then.” Yugi softly said. It was really quiet, but the rest of the class could hear him just as well in this closed room.
One classmate decided to speak up about it and talked about the rumor he heard during the years, “He was admitted to the hospital because of a shock I think.”
“Oh yeah, I heard the same thing. I think he still hasn’t recovered either.”
Yugi looked at the desk in deep thought before feeling his other half’s hand on his shoulder. He looked back to see Yami with a sad expression on his face.
“Yami… what’s wrong?”
“You’ll find out soon, but I’m unsure if you’ll look at me the same way again.” His eyes shuffled to the side as if to avoid Yugi’s questioning gaze.
The phantom touch lingers and Yugi brings out his hand to place it on top of Yami. A small yet comforting smile was given to him and that made him look at Yugi once more.
“Don’t worry, mou hitori no boku. I always believe in my friends and you’re no exception.”
“Yugi…” Yami blinked at his partner’s confidence and honesty. His worried expression soon melts away, returning him back into his calm self.
“Thank you.”
“Who are you talking to, Yugi?”
Yugi and Yami jumped at the sudden interruption and they both starred in the direction where the voice came from. Only to see that the video had been paused and all of the classmates' attention were on them, or in this case- on Yugi.
“Oh, did I say that outloud?” Yugi awkwardly laughed and to confirm that, his friends also nodded their heads. He pulled his hand back to place it on his lap. His face quickly turned red in embarrassment.
“Yeah… ah well, that’s probably a quirk of his.” The classmate shrugged.
“I just- like to talk to myself a lot. Hahahaaaa,” Yugi gave his classmates the most sincere look he could give them. Most of them bought it and turned back to look at the screen.
“That’s a good excuse, Aibou.” Yami teased him with a smile.
“Ehhhh.”
“It was nothin’!” Joey glared at the taller man while Tristan looked taken aback and quickly came to his friend’s rescue and slapped his hand over Joey’s mouth.
“Aaahh! W-we didn’t say a thing!”
“Really!”
Ushio looked down at the two before starting to walk away, “Bullying is not good, you know.”
“Yes. Understood.” Tristan said while still having his hand over Joey to stop him from saying anything to make the situation worse.
“Oh, one more thing… be sure your school uniform is properly buttoned.” Ushio turned back to look at the two and Tristan quickly sent an affirmative, “Okay!” as Joey was being choked to death.
Ushio gave a smirk in their direction.
“Oof, Joey is not looking good.”
“Tristan, I think you’re going to make Joey faint,” Yugi said to his friend with a small laugh and Joey woefully accepted his fate.
“Ah well- the words of his were going to get us in trouble.” Tristan said in defense.
“He left”
Joey can be seen with his face red and trying hard to breathe.
The whole class erupted into laughter and the only one who’s not laughing along is a sad looking Joey sitting behind Tristan.
“You jerk! I couldn’t breathe!” Joey yelled in Tristan’s direction. Fume practically coming from his ears.
“Idiot! Do you have any idea who you were picking a fight with?”
“Eh?” Joey paused in his anger and turned to look at his friend in surprise
“He’s the Public Moral Member, Ushio-san. It’s his responsibility to make everyone follow the school’s rules.” He explained.
“He’s an amazing person.”
The class immediately looked back at the three friends who made a pained sound. Tristan and Joey were looking at the ceiling while Yugi flopped his head at the desk. Yami looked slightly worried at him.
“Tristan, you gotta take that back now.”
“I did! That fight, remember?”
Tea frowned and looked slightly worried at this, “Is he a bad person?”
“Very.”
“Absolutely.”
“Definitely.”
Yugi then looked up at the others while his cheek was still mushed at the table, “Not a nice person. I rate his service 1/10.”
Joey and Tristan jumped up to shout right in his ears and Yugi winced.
“A 1/10!? You should give him a 0!”
“Yeah, Yugi! That guy shouldn’t even have a rating in the first place!”
Yugi clutched the side of his face before letting out a defeated sigh, “Okay, okay. Fine! It was a bad service.”
“Hmph! I wonder.”
“Everybody knows flattering guys like that always have another side to them.” Joey looked distrustful and even spiteful at the direction Ushio went.
“Don’t be ridiculous!”
“See? My guts are never wrong.” Joey huffed proudly. The rest of the class didn’t really believe him, sadly.
That’s when the ads interrupted the video and everyone let out a groan.
Notes:
Update! Oooh, I might be a bit slow to update since I also have to work on my other fics and my youtube channel. It'll come along slowly though. I really like seeing the characters reaction so much! They're super fun.
