Chapter Text

Riiiiing.

Riiiiing.

Ri-

“Yes?” Said a feminine voice.

“Y/N?” She heard Soichiro Yagami say on the other line.

“Oh, hello Superintendent. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Y/N said with surprise in her tone.

“Sorry for the unexpected call, Y/N. I’ll cut right to the chase. I was wanting to reach out to request that you join the Kira Investigation, which I’m sure you’ve heard of in the news already. As you already know, the police are already involved and we have a separate Kira case division as of recently.”

Silence.

Soichiro continued, “I know you are currently on suspension from your police duties, but I was wanting to offer you the opportunity to join the Kira Task Force. The reason for your suspension… I won’t go into it right now, but I believe in your abilities as a detective, Y/N.” He said with a hint of empathy. There was a conviction in his voice that made it difficult to combat.

“This really comes as a surprise to me, I’m honored that you considered me for this high profile case.” Y/N answered.

“I believe your abilities would be useful in this particular case, so I requested that your suspension be lifted.”

Y/N thought for a long moment before saying, “…Okay. I will do it.” She said firmly with some hesitation.

“I’m glad you’ve made that decision. Long story short, we will be meeting face to face with L tonight at a location that I will disclose with you later.”

“Oh? We will be meeting him in person?”

“That’s right. That goes without saying, this information should be kept between us.”

“Got it.”

“Thanks again, Y/N. We will see you later, then.” Soichiro said before hanging up the phone.

Y/N let out a shaky exhale before putting her phone down.

The Japanese Police had received a cryptic message from L for the Kira task force to meet face to face at a suite at the Teito Hotel at midnight.

There was some hesitation from the police because L has been investigating on his own by hiring the 12 FBI agents. This miscommunication has caused a rift between the japanese police and L. There were many members that quit the Kira Task force left and right due to the immense risk that came with chasing Kira and working under L. It was an understandable decision, nobody blamed them for putting themselves and their family first. Only those who had a strong sense of justice were left.

Among those included Y/N.

It was becoming evident that L was waiting for the task force to narrow down to only those detectives he could trust. That meant that he needed to weed out anyone who wasn’t wholeheartedly committed to the case. That left him with six detectives in the police force, including Y/N. Ide backed out of the task force last minute because he had little trust in L. Those left are in agreement that L is a reliable person that they are willing to cooperate with.

After anxiously waiting, Y/N finally received the address where the group was to meet. A big reason why she did not turn down the case was because she wanted to meet the best of the best.

Who is this mysterious L?

Y/N finally arrived at the hotel that was designated to be the meeting place in the heart of the bustling city that Tokyo was. Upon a first glimpse, it gave a modern and expensive vibe judging from the hotel lobby. She pushed the hotel lobby door open and caught a glimpse of the others sitting around a coffee table and discussing something presumably important judging from their facial expressions.

All but Y/N, were already in the lobby of the hotel waiting for everyone to arrive. Matsuda was the first to notice her entering the hotel as she approached the group. “Y/N! It’s great to see you.” He stood up and bowed slightly. Everyone else looked up from where they were sitting. There was a hesitant, yet supportive impression she got from the group.

“Indeed. It’s good to have you back.” Mr. Yagami said with firmness in his voice, which also had a hint of warmth.

“It’s great to be back, it’s certainly under crazy circumstances, but I’m happy nonetheless.” Y/N returned a smile.

“Well, it’s time to go up to the room where we will be meeting L.” Mr. Yagami informed. The group stood up in unison and followed behind the superintendent to the elevator. He prompted the floor that L had instructed and waited as the elevator ascended. There was a ding sound before the elevator doors parted. The herd walked out and searched for the indicated room and found it after a short search.

Y/N yawned and checked her wrist watch.

Midnight.

What an ungodly hour for a meeting, she thought to herself.

“Are we all ready?” Aizawa asked the group.

Mr. Yagami nodded firmly in response.

Mr. Yagami gently knocked on the door of L’s suite. The six other detectives were standing behind him. The detectives regarded each other with uneasiness as they anticipated what was behind the door.

“It’s unlocked. Please let yourselves in.” Said a low voice behind the door. Mr. Yagami obediently opened the door and there stood a young man facing the entrance.

It is clear to say that he was not what the police were expecting. He was a young looking man, in his mid-twenties perhaps. He was wearing casual baggy blue jeans, with a long sleeve white shirt. The man had messy black hair, but it still looked soft somehow. His eye bags would explain why they were meeting him at this hotel so late- he hardly sleeps. While he wasn’t conventionally attractive, there was something captivating about him.

“I am L.” Was all he said as he scratched his ankle with his other foot.

“He’s nothing like I thought he’d be.” Matsuda whispered to the 5 other detectives. Y/N blinked and regarded the man with intrigue.

The group was perhaps expecting an older man, perhaps, a clean cut looking man with nicer attire. He had a dark and intense aura, so strong she could feel it. Y/N was not disappointed by any means, but she could not meet his gaze for too long.

The group of seven detectives went around introducing themselves one by one, while they displayed their police badges.

L raised his hand in the form of a finger gun and aimed it at the group. “Bang!”

“Huh?” The task force reacted in unison. Y/N tried her best to hold in a laugh at the absurd joke, at least, she interpreted it as him trying to be funny.

“If I were Kira, you’d be dead Mr. Soichiro Yagami, chief of the NPA. Kira needs a face and a name in order to commit murder.” He paused.

“Please do not give out your names so carelessly. Instead, let’s value our lives.” L said as he shuffled to the main living area. “That’s enough small talk for now. Come this way. Please turn off your cell phones and any other communication devices and leave them on the table.” L said in an authoritative voice.

The raven haired man led the group into a sitting area within the main living room. Y/N looked around and took in her surroundings, it was quite the luxurious suite. The room was well lit and sparsely furnished- the basics only but was accented with expensive looking furniture. The world’s greatest detective surely had deep pockets, she thought to herself.

Just when the task force thought things couldn’t get weirder, they did. L took a seat on one of the loveseats and pulled his legs up to his chest, in a crouched way of sitting.

“Please make yourselves comfortable.” L gestured for the others to sit. Everyone gathered in the living area where L was situated and shamelessly stared at him. L seemed to take no mind to it though, because he nonchalantly started throwing sugar cube after sugarcube into a small cup of coffee. Y/N took a seat on the couch next to L.

The meeting proved to be a surprisingly productive one. For the most part it was the police pitching in theories relating to the Kira case, and L shooting them down. L explained his profile analysis on who Kira may be, mostly on how Kira is childish and how he is becoming more and more reckless. L’s theory is that Kira had to be one of the people being investigated by the FBI between the 14th and 19th of December. He explained his theory by using a sharpie and writing on the expensive mahogany coffee table.

"Any other questions?" L said in a bored tone.

L handed everyone some files containing information gathered from the deceased FBI members. Matsuda and Aizawa took the stack of papers enthusiastically. It seems that vigor and trust was restored after this face-to-face meeting. It is likely that in no time, we will have a line-up of suspects that may be Kira. L is truly an efficient investigator and has proven that thus far. Y/N scanned the documents that were handed to her carefully.

"Right, Y/N?" Mr. Yagami turned to face Y/N.

The mention of her name brought her back to the present conversation. She had no idea what was said as her mind was elsewhere.

"Huh? Oh yes." Y/N agreed without having known what was said. Hopefully that was the correct answer, she thought.

"L, this is Y/N. I invited her to join the task force last minute. She will be our best asset in the Kira Task Force on the police’s end." Mr. Yagami explained. “She’s a criminal profiler, so she can offer insight on deviant behavior and such.”

L regarded her with intense eyes and appeared to be deep in thought."Yes. Her insight will be greatly valued." He finally said.

"That's right. She will be useful when we begin to determine our suspects. She has a talent for profiling people and interrogating to obtain information. That is where Y/N’s talents shine." Mr. Yagami explained. Despite her temporary suspension, Soichiro clearly held an unwavering respect for her.

L’s coal eyes locked with hers for a moment, as if he was getting a read on her.

Y/N bowed politely. “I will give it my all.”

After the meeting, the group made their way to the hotel lobby as they were chatting with renewed enthusiasm. They now have a significant lead on the Kira investigation after weeks of frustration and fear. This meeting with L lifted their spirits and restored their trust in him. The group was now looking forward to collaborating with the world renowned detective.

"I'm heading out." Aizawa announced.

"Same here. I think I can still make it home and get some decent amount of sleep." Soichiro as and
they both walked towards the lobby door.

"See you guys." Mogi bowed and followed the older men. That left Y/N and Matsuda remaining in the hotel lobby.

"Do you think you have a moment to chat, Matsuda?" Y/N asked.

"Sure, Y/N. Do you want a drink? There’s a nice bar across the street." Matsuda smiled.

"Yeah, I'd love that". Y/N smiled.

~

The pair walked across the street to this bar that sat snugly between a pizzeria and a sushi bar. The indoor light of the bar reflected on the alcohol bottles behind the counter, projecting kaleidoscopic shapes in the wooden decoration. It was an upscale bar located in the wealthier region of Tokyo. The bar was slow, for a Friday night. There were only two other customers sitting at the tables. The bar was rather empty, so the pair took a seat near the corner on the tall bar stools.

"What can I serve you today?" The bartender approached them leaned across the counter as he regarded them politely.

"One Moscow mule, please."

"I'll have one of those too. And some sunflower seeds, please." Matsuda said.

“Coming right up.” The bartender responded and turned around to acquire the ingredients.

"What a night." Y/N sighed tiredly as she sunk into the bar stool. Matsuda looked over at Y/N’s slumped figure with a furrowed brow.

"Is there something wrong, Y/N?" His eyes softened at her.

"Yeah." Y/N paused. "That's actually what I was wanting to talk to you about. I have doubts about being involved with the task force, despite my suspension." Y/n sighed. She offered a weak smile at him.

"Two Moscow mules. Do you want to open a tab or close it?" The bartender asked while placing the beverages in front of the pair.

Matsuda and Y/N looked at each other in unison. "Keep it open." Matsuda told the bartender. "I think it's gonna be one of those nights." Matsuda laughed jovially. He took a sip of his freshly made Moscow mule and nodded approvingly at the taste.

Y/N sighed again. "The mistake I made that day… I cannot take it back but it makes me wonder if I’m cut out to be a police officer." Y/N’s fingertips fidgeted with the cold cup. Her gaze shifted to a distant point, as if recalling a memory,

Matsuda looked at her thoughtfully before responding, "We don’t have to go into the reason for your suspension right now, but I just want you to know that the superintendent really respects you as an officer.” He paused. “ I think you deserve a second chance, Y/N."

"I see". Y/N fiddled with her fingers. "I don't want to weigh anyone down with my doubts about remaining in the case." She admitted. “I hate to say that I’ve considered dropping the case.”

"You know, chasing someone like Kira can give anyone cold feet. But I think you’re doing great." He patted her in the back assuredly.

"Thank you, Matsu." Y/N said and playfully bumped Matsuda on the arm. “I needed this chat. Sometimes I get really in my head.” Y/N admitted and took a sip of her cold alcoholic drink. “We’ll catch Kira wherever he is.” Y/N said. In truth, she didn’t quite believe the words coming out of her mouth.

"This is the most serious case you’ve taken on but you’ve been promoted far faster than anyone else. You just need to believe in yourself. You have what it takes to go against someone like Kira."

"Right." Y/N said with renewed enthusiasm.

"We're going to catch Kira no matter what!" Matsuda said enthusiastically.

"Hey, don't say that so loudly. This is a secret investigation." Y/N let out a giggle.

"Right." He said while scratching the back of his head nervously.

~

As Y/N walked home, she mulled over the thought of leaving the Kira Task Force. The thought of fighting a person that does not have to be present to kill is a daunting task. It is possible that the Kira Task force is not well equipped to handle this case. How is a small group of 6 people supposed to catch an individual with God-like abilities? The task force is in fact dealing with a magical disadvantage.

A question that circled in her mind was if she would be willing to die for this case and if she was ready to resume her police duties. Someone like Kira would not hesitate to kill her if she got in his way. Kira demonstrated that by killing the 12 innocent FBI agents that were investigating possible suspects.

Y/N arrived to her apartment complex and stopped before her doorstep. She rustled through her purse looking for her apartment keys.

Wouldn't it be funny if I left my keys at L's hotel? Her mind wandered as she searched for her key.

"Here they are." Y/N sighed in relief and pulled out her apartment key from her skirt pocket. She inserted the key in the lock and opened the door.

She tossed her bag on the couch and dragged her feet to her bedroom and made sure to be quiet, to not wake her sleeping sister. Without a second thought, she threw herself on her bed, still in her business casual clothes but she was far too tired and tipsy to change.

After mulling over whether to leave the Kira task force or not, she made the decision to stay in the task force. She decided to put her full trust in L.

Whether it was the alcohol or exhaustion, Y/N passed out as her head hit the pillow, with her last thought being of the mysterious, raven haired detective.
