Chapter 1: Vial of Memories

Chapter Text

“Take a look at what I found!” Trevor called out from beneath the staircases.

Alucard and Sypha separated from their discussion and looked down at the man sitting down surrounded by different items.

“What did you find?” Sypha asked back and Trevor looked up.

“I- I don't know…” Trevor said hesitantly.

“Shocker.” Alucard taunted beside Sypha. Clearly Trevor heard him because he glared from beneath.

The ginger haired woman sighed, “Wait, we're coming downstairs.” She said and started descending. Alucard following suit.

“What is this ?” Sypha asked, bewildered, as she rotated a small vial filled with shiny liquid.

“I…was hoping you'd know.” Trevor said with a raised eyebrow, arms crossed.

“I may have an idea.” Alucard muttered as he took another vial from the box, inspecting it.

“Really? Do tell.”

“This…may be a memory vial. My father mentioned them to me when I was younger.” The blond started, “These things hold memories. Literally, memories can be kept in vials using magic. Very dark magic.” He looked up from his explanation, “I'm surprised to find it here.”

Surprised faces stared back at him.

“Wait! I know what it is now! I've heard about it,” Sypha’s eyes widened considerably, “but I've only ever heard about it. As Alucard mentioned, it's very dark magic and can only be performed by extremely powerful Alchemists. How…did it wind up here?”

“You're both asking as if I know.” Trevor said with a frown.

“Where did you even find it?” Alucard asked, raising his eyebrow.

“I was going through Leon Belmont’s stuff—”

“—very rude—” the blond interrupted.

“— and I found useful items such as this holy sword,” the brunet glared at the man and held up a sword, “but also this box of vials.”

“Odd. Why would your ancestor possess such a dark artefact? Surely he wasn't an alchemist.” Sypha frowned.

“He wasn't…no.” Trevor mimicked her stance.

“Why are we even surprised? Belmont claimed his family weren't magicians either, yet the doorway blocking the hold is made from pure magic.” The blond took his eyes off the vial and locked them with Trevor's, “Who's to say some other previous Belmonts weren't dark alchemists either?”

Trevor growled, “How about you-”

“He's right, Trevor.” Sypha sighed, “Your family does have anonymous roots of magic and sorcery. If Leon Belmont met up with some alchemist to preserve his memories then… who are we to judge?”

“Indeed,” Alucard commented, “In fact, this might even be useful. Perhaps Belmont’s ancestor left some tips on how to defeat Dracula?”

“Yes! You're right!” Sypha enthused and both members stared expectantly at the only Belmont.

Trevor sighed, “You both are the smart ones,” he shrugged, “if you think we should check them out, then sure.”

Sypha grinned and left to put her books back, leaving both men behind. The blond glanced at the Belmont, “So you admit I'm smart?”

“Oh shut up. ”

Alucard chuckled.

“So…this shiny thing is… his memory?” Trevor questioned, genuinely interested.

“Indeed it is.”

“So how do we watch it?”

“With this,” said Alucard as he pulled out three big bowls and sat down. Sypha seemed to understand what he was doing as she filled up the bowls with water,  while sitting down beside him.

Trevor looked at them as if they were crazy and still proceeded to sit down with a shrug. Oh well, what did he know?

Sypha muttered some incantation while holding each bowl one by one. Slowly, all three bowls’ water became pure white. Almost shining.

After the deed was done, Trevor looked over questioningly to the blond who started explaining, much to the Belmont’s surprise. He had expected to be taunted first. It seemed that Alucard was far more excited about this than he let on.

“It's much easier to activate the magic than to create it. Sypha or really, any beginner magician, can activate a memory vial. The difficult part is to preserve one, and for so long as well.” The half vampire informed him while Sypha nodded along, finishing up her incantations.

“Yes. The spell caster truly must have been a powerful one.”

“Hmmm.” Trevor said.

“Now the question is…which one shall we start by watching?”

“Would this be a proper moment to mention the letter I found in the box?” Trevor commented and the other two paused. A bead of sweat dropped from his forehead at their glare.

“You mention this now ?” Sypha asked rhetorically.

“God, you're useless.” Alucard facepalmed and Trevor sputtered, offended. “Hey!”

“Give!” The blond hissed and snatched the piece of paper that Trevor had pulled out of his tunic.

The letter was yellowing but, surprisingly, still well kept. Upon inspecting the words, the blond deducted that it was written in pure French.

“I know French but just the bare minimum, really. Enough to hold a conversation, not sure about pure French, though…” Sypha said and Trevor raised his eyebrows.

“Didn't you say that you learned many languages?”

Sypha flushed, “I-I tend to focus on the more ancient languages, mind you!”

“Alright quiet!” Alucard said both closed their mouths, “I do know pure French and can translate it for us.”

“How?” Trevor seemed surprised.

“About thirty percent of the books in my father's castle are in pure French. I had to learn it.”

“Oh…”

“Enough talk now. Let's see…” Alucard started reading in this head with furrowed eyebrows and then said out loud after a while.

It has been over 5 years. Yet I cannot seem to recover from that incident.

I lost my fiancée and my best friend. But to be honest, I didn't really lose him.

He left me. Left me after he turned to the darkness.” Alucard read out loud as the other two looked slightly confused.

“Turned into the darkness?” Trevor asked incredulously.

“Turned to darkness, Belmont, as in turned evil.” Alucard deadpanned.

“Right right, continue.”

“His best friend turned evil? That's unfortunate...” Sypha commented.

I have never felt as betrayed as I did then, and even now. My life changed completely, after Mathias turned.” The blond continued, raising an eyebrow in the process, “ The vampirism changed him completely. I thought he loved us, cared for us. Guess that was not the case since his priority was vengeance against God.”

“Oh that's interesting. His best friend, Mathias I think he said, turned into a vampire to spite God?” Sypha said and Trevor frowned.

“I wasn't aware of this part of the history.” Trevor pursued his lips for a second, “And who the hell even is Mathias?”

“My father…” Alucard whispered in surprise, eyes not leaving the paper in his hands. Sypha and Trevor gaped at him.

“Say what!?”

“Mathias was my father,” The blond looked up, “He told me when I was younger. His name, before turning, was Mathias Cronqvist. I remember it well.”

“Holy shit…” The brunet cursed, “Dracula and Leon were best friends ? Did you know that?” He questioned and Alucard shook his head.

“Father rarely ever mentions about his human life. All I know is his name and the fact that the Belmonts were after him ever since he turned. I wasn't ever aware of…”

“This is wild…” Sypha said, “We truly are finding out a lot from this.”

“Indeed…” Alucard cleared his throat and read the letter further, “ As if… never assumed… couldn't believe…” He skipped through a few parts and the other two looked at him weirdly. “It’s just rants about how betrayed he felt, I'm trying to skip to anything that may be important.” He explained.

“Understandably, if someone I cared for turned into a vampire, I would feel betrayed as well.” Sypha furrowed her eyebrows and glanced at the blond. “No offence, Alucard.”

“None taken, let's see…” He continued instead, “Here, I got assistance from Rinaldo Gandolfi, the one who helped me create the vampire killer—”

“Woah,” Trevor's eyes went slightly wide and his hand automatically reached for the mentioned whip on his hip.

“— to preserve my most important memories, happy as well as sad. I know I will never be able to feel them the same way again, not after what happened. But, I do not want them to disappear either.

Rinaldo shall help me preserve them, so even when I face death, I shall know that my moments of happiness are safe.

Moments with Sara, Elizabetha and…Mathias.

—Leon Belmont.” Alucard finished with a sigh and glanced up at his companions.

“Damn…”

“Damn indeed.”

After a while of silence, Trevor spoke up, “Who's Elizabetha?”

“My father's first wife,” Alucard said, “Who's Sara?”

“Leon’s fiancée.”

“Ah.”

“Wait, Dracula had a wife ?” The blond looked at the woman, “Before your mother, that is.”

“He did. He told my mother truthfully before they were wedded. She didn't mind.” The younger man explained.

“Does that mean he had a child before you?” Trevor asked and took back the letter from his hands.

“He did not. They were married, yes, but never had children. Or so he told me.” He looked a little hesitant, “My father wouldn't have lied to my mother about such a thing.”

“Are you sure ?” Trevor eyed him and Alucard glared back.

“Should we…watch this now?” Sypha broke apart the upcoming fight and asked them.

“I suppose so, yes.”

“Alright, sit down Trevor.” Sypha ordered and crossed her legs in front of one of the bowls. Alucard did the same thing and grabbed another bowl in his hands.

Trevor seemed confused and mimicked the two, picking up the only bowl left.

He watched confusedly as the blond picked the first vial—labelled ‘year 1078’—carefully. Then he poured it into all three bowls, dividing them equally. Trevor was surprised but Sypha didn't stop him so he kept quiet. He preferred to stay away from the magic bullshit anyway.

“Now, dip.”

Trevor stared dumbfoundedly, “Dip?”

“Dip, yes. Dip your face in.” Alucard instructed.

“Like this,” Sypha offered helpfully and fully dipped her face into the bowl, then slightly slumped in her seat.

“Did she just die?” He asked and the blond snorted. “No, just follow her lead.” Then proceeded to do the same thing. It would have looked hilarious if it weren't for how incredibly lunatic it was. Still, he had no choice in the matter.

Trevor took a breath instinctively and dipped his face in the bowl of…something.

Immediately, he felt it. Not wet or, well, not how it felt underwater, no. It felt dizzy. As if his vision blurred.

It stayed like that for a while before slowly it started getting back to him. He was sitting down, staring at the floor. But not the floor to his family's hold. It was an unknown place. Trevor looked up to see Alucard and Sypha standing before him, looking around.

“Where are we?” He questioned as he stood up.

“We're in the memory.”

In the memory?” He asked, shocked.

“Yes. We'll view the memory live but we cannot interact.” Sypha explained and as if to demonstrate, attempted to knock over an ink bottle, only for her hand to pass right through it.

“This is the most batshit situation I've been in. And I've teamed up with the son of Dracula.” Trevor commented as he looked around the room.

It was a modest room, red wallpaper and similar coloured carpet, but with golden designs. There was a wooden desk, a small wardrobe and a single bed. There was also a half circle window above the desk. Through it, they could see it was raining hard. Lightning striking.

No lamps were lit so the room was pretty dark as well.

“What's wrong, Alucard?” Sypha asked behind him so he looked around. The blond was bowing slightly, trying to look under the bed.

“There's someone there.” He explained and both, Sypha and Trevor, crouched down. Indeed, there was a figure under the bed, huddled into a blanket.

“Hey kid!” Trevor called out.

“They cannot hear us, Belmont. That's the point. We cannot interact with the memories, only view them.” Alucard rolled his eyes and Trevor sighed.

“Of course, of course.”

“Leon!” A voice called outside the door and knocked.

No one answered so the knocking came again, “Leon, open the door!”

“Did he say Leon?”

“Is that Leon Belmont under there?” Trevor asked and Alucard snorted in response.

When on one else answered in the room, the door handle fidgeted and the door opened. In came a teenage boy, about 14-15, wearing a white tunic and grey trousers. He had neck length black hair and blue eyes.

“Who's this?”

“I don't know?”

The boy looked around but then his eyes went towards the bed. He crouched down and lifted up the covers, to reveal another boy—who they assumed was Leon.

“There you are. What are you doing under there?” The boy asked and Leon finally lifted his head up, blue eyes shone with tears.

“Aww he was cute!” Sypha cooed and the men looked amused.

Right as Leon was about to answer, a loud thunder crashed and he yelped. Jumping up into the teen boy's arms.

Alucard snorted and Trevor flushed in embarrassment for some reason. He really wasn't expecting his ancestor to be scared of thunderstorms of all things.

The other boy looked at the window in understanding, “Ah the thunder, is it? That's why you were hiding under there?”

Leon nodded, face still pressed into the other boy's chest in fright. The black haired boy smiled and sat on the floor, leaning against the bed. “Thunder isn't even that scary, it's basically just clouds rubbing against each other and making loud noises. Nothing else.”

Leon lifted his head off and looked at him, curling up against the boy's side. “But they taught me that thunder was God's wrath…”

All three adults in the room simultaneously rolled their eyes. Of course. The church.

The teen boy had a similar reaction where he looked annoyed, “Well, it's not. In my class, they said it was nature. Not God being pissy.”

Trevor snorted, “I like this kid.”

Leon gasped, “You shouldn't use such a language! Father Benjamin will be angry at you!”

“Father Benjamin is angry at everything!” He reiterated.

“Wait, I just realised. How come we understand them? Aren't they speaking in French?” Sypha questioned.

“Um…magic?” Alucard offered and Trevor laughed.

“How are you supposed to be a knight if you're scared of thunderstorms?” The black haired boy asked.

“A knight faces persons! Not storms!”

People , not persons.” He corrected, “Besides, what if you're in the middle of a fight and a storm comes. Will you run away?”

Leon couldn't come up with an answer so he just stuck his tongue out, making the other boy laugh.

“That's pretty wholesome.” Sypha smiled.

“Don't laugh at me, Mathias.” Leon grumbled.

Sypha's smile dropped and her eyes widened.

“Hey! I'm older than you, don't call me by my name!”

“Mathias! Mathias! Mathias!” He said and pouted.

“Holy shit that's DRACULA??!” Trevor yelled in shock while Alucard just gaped.

Mathias huffed and rolled his eyes. The vision blurred and all three stumbled. They were pulled back.

Trevor gasped as he pulled his face out of the bowl, he realised his face wasn't wet so he just looked at his other two companions.

After they calmed down, Alucard snorted, “You liked that kid, huh?”

Trevor flushed, “Shut up! I didn't realise-”

“Alright we can argue about that later, let's go to the next memory. We don't need to waste too much time.” Sypha stopped them yet again and Alucard grabbed another vial.

The ginger haired woman muttered a few incantations while holding the empty vial and stuck it in the bowls. As she lifted it from each bowl, the vial was filled again. With the same bright liquid.

Trevor was NOT going to question it, he just prepared for the next dip as Alucard divided the next vial’s contents.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Chapter Text

This time they were prepared for the dizziness, at least, Trevor was. He was sure the other two weren't even fazed.

When they felt the landscape change and then come back to life again, it wasn't a room anymore. They were in a hallway, an unknown one.

“Where are we this time?” Sypha looked around and so did the other two men, not having an answer for the question either. The floor was made out of mosaic and there were white marble pillars on one side. They were about two floors above the ground and likely in a home conjoined with a church—if the giant cross on every pillar was anything to go by.

Suddenly they heard hurried footsteps down the hall and turned to look. Leon and Mathias were walking down the hall towards them, talking amongst themselves. As they got closer, it seemed that they were older than the previous memory.

Leon looked like he was in his late teens and Mathias was a little bit older. Both wore black robes that resembled church’s mens, and a cross locket around their neck.

“Gods, how ironic is it for Dracula to be wearing that?” Trevor snorted and Alucard sighed.

Sypha cleared her throat, “Yes, and you certainly wouldn't expect him to look like that .”

Upon that, they noticed—as the men passed by—that Mathias had longer jet black hair reaching down to his waist and his face was quite attractive. Green eyes determined as he said to Leon, “I don't understand why you believe her.” His voice was softer than his vampire self but also sharp. His jaw was clenched and completely clean shaven.

Alucard cringed, “Don't tell me you find him attractive.’’ Trevor laughed out loud that that and Sypha flushed.

“No!” She denied.

“Thank the heavens.”

“But…I mean-”

“Alright. No.” He shook his head rapidly.

“Look! I'm just saying-” She explained, “He's good looking, that's not a bad thing.”

“No, but it's a bad thing when you're saying it. That's Alucard's Father and most importantly, Dracula .” Trevor said.

“Back when he was human .” She defended herself, “you know what? I'm not even going to say anything.”

“Yes, that would be a better idea.” The dhampir sighed and turned to the two other men who had paused a few feet away from them and were discussing.

“—we’ve been seeing each other for quite some time now, I think I would know if Sophie was being disloyal to me.” Leon said exasperatedly.

“You do not believe me when I tell you that I saw her in the arms of another man?” Mathias frowned.

“Ooooh, that's something.” Sypha clicked her tongue.

“It is not that I don't believe you! It is just… we have yet to even hold hands . Sophie insists that we wait until marriage even for that!” He told him, “I find it difficult to believe you saw her openly…frolicking with another man. While we're seeing each other.”

“Hold hands? He was that much of a devotee of the church?” Sypha blinked.

“Who even says frolicking anymore?” Trevor snorted.

“You both must remember that it is a different time. Where a man and a woman even being in the same room alone seemed indecent.” Alucard sighed, “I am unsurprised that father held onto that sentiment of celibacy for me to follow.”

“Seriously? He didn't pass that down to you.” Sypha chuckled but her laugh died down when Alucard didn't humour her back.

“My father made sure I would not participate in any such…activities until I became old enough and was in a proper relationship.” The dhampir frowned to himself, “But then again, he also didn't exactly let me date. Not that I had many options while living in that castle.”

“Ignoring that last, very sad comment; you're a virgin?!” Sypha said with surprise while Trevor was still shocked. He didn't even say anything because he wasn't sure what to say.

“Yes, and? I think we have better business to attend to right now, rather than my chastity.” He said while waving at Leon and Mathias who were still arguing heatedly.

“Fine! I knew you would not believe me. That is why I brought you here.” Mathias huffed and grabbed Leon’s wrist, dragging him off to one of the rooms on the hallway.

“He better not harm him.” Trevor narrowed his eyes.

“They were friends, Belmont. I hardly doubt he would try that to his friend and while he was still human.” Alucard glared at the man and rolled his eyes.

“Well, his disdain had to have started somewhere , hadn't it?”

“Enough.” Sypha stopped them and pointed at the long black haired man dragging the blond Belmont away.

Mathias placed a finger in front of his lips to indicate silence as he approached the door. Leon followed him quietly as well and Mathias, very slowly, turned the handle of the door. He peeked in, nodded to himself and threw open the door, stepping away to show what was inside.

“Ohhh shit!” Trevor exclaimed while the other two stared wide eyed at the occupants of the room. There was a woman with chestnut hair who was, very passionately, making out with another man with short dark hair.

They all glanced at Leon to see his reaction to the scene. “I assume that's Sophie, judging by his expression.” Alucard commented.

The blond knight was shell shocked at the people in the room. After a few seconds, they pulled away and Sophie glanced at the door. She did a double take and pushed away the other man, eyes wide as she spotted Leon.

“Good evening, Sophie Cartier.” Mathias greeted rather smugly. She glared at him for a second before turning to Leon, Sophie's eyes turned sad. “Leon! This truly isn't what it seems like.”

“Hah! What an excuse.” Sypha scoffed.

Leon didn't answer, his eyes were still wide at her, his expression didn't change at all. Mathias took a step forward in the room, “You mean his tongue wasn't down your throat? My mistake!” He drawled with no pity whatsoever.

Trevor snorted and controlled his chuckle, making Sypha and Alucard glance at him.

“You!- Shut up!” Sophie hissed out at the dark haired man.

“No, Cartier. It's about time you stayed quiet.” Leon suddenly spoke, making Sophie startle.

“Leon…You have never called me by my last name.”

“Perhaps it is time I started, then. Since clearly we are not as close as I assumed.” The blond narrowed his eyes at her and at the man. “Were you aware, good sir?”

The man avoided his eyes and looked away. Mathias scoffed in annoyance, “Get out, the both of you. And expect Father Benjamin to be made aware of this.”

“No!” Both the room's occupants’ eyes went wide. “Please, do not tell him!”

“Why shouldn't we? It is forbidden to elope before marriage.” Leon said and wrinkled his nose, “And that at the age of 17…” he said with clear disgust at them.

“I-”

“As your senior, I demand you get out of our eyesight!” Mathias hissed back, “Or else the consequences will be even more dire.”

Sophie and the other man scurried out the room and darted across the hall, leaving Leon and Mathias behind. Leon stared as they left while Mathias glanced at the blond.

“I feel bad him.” Sypha said with pity. “It's not easy to find out your partner has been unfaithful.”

“I never had that problem.” Trevor shrugged.

“Really?”

“Yeah, I usually just left as soon as the payment was done.” Sypha sputtered at that and Alucard face palmed while Trevor snickered.

“That is-” Alucard started but was interrupted by a sob behind them. They turned around to find Leon slumped in Mathias’s arms, visibly shaking, though his face was hidden. His sobbing was muffled while the longer dark haired man patted his back.

Trevor, Sypha and Alucard's eyes went wide at the scene. Trevor's jaw probably dropped as well.

“There, there, do not cry now ! I had told you before!” Mathias said and the sobbing got louder. He winced and held the blond closer, shutting up.

“I never thought I would live to see this day.” Trevor muttered.

“Which part?” Sypha asked, now incredibly amused at the view.

“Everything! My ancestor is wailing over some girl leaving him and Dracula is comforting him!”

“He is not Dracula yet, Belmont.” Alucard narrowed his eyes.

“Does that really matter? He will be.”

“Becoming a vampire doesn't automatically mean that he lost his empathy. I'll let you know that he was a brilliant father to me!” The blond hissed and turned away from them.

Before Trevor could say anything else in response, the background swirled and they were back. All three gasped as they lifted their heads up the bowls. Alucard glared at Trevor. “Don't talk about my father like that ever again, Belmont.”

It was Trevor's turn to glare back, “Oh shouldn't I? After he started rampaging around, destroying Wallachia!”

“That's not the same as saying he doesn't have feelings! He started destruction because he loved my mother!” The blond screamed and it caught the rest two off guard. “He couldn't handle the grief.” He took a deep breath and looked up. Upon noticing that Trevor and Sypha were staring at him, he stood up.

“Where are you going?” Sypha asked softly.

“I need fresh air.” He commented, speeding up his walk and left the area. Both watched him leave and turned to each other. “This is your fault.” Sypha told him.

“Don't even start. I did nothing wrong.” The hunter denied.

“Nothing wrong? Dracula may seem murderous to us—”

“It's nothing to ‘seem’. He is a murderously crazy lunatic.”

“—BUT.” Sypha continued and glared at him. “He is Alucard's Father and from what it sounded, likely a good one.”

“So what? I offended him? Saying that the guy who is killing Wallachia is unkind ?” He mocked.

“It's not about that . It's about you calling him apathetic. Alucard grew up with the man, you know. His world view has already been shattered, and now you're just adding fuel to the fire.” Sypha explained, “Not counting the fact this entire mission is for him to commit patricide.”

That shut up Trevor. He closed his mouth and looked away.

“I'm not asking much, just try and be a little more sympathetic.”

“I…can't, It's Dracula .” Trevor managed to say, “My family has spent decades hunting him, that's what's been drilled into my brain for as long as I could understand. It's not easy for me to suddenly know that Dracula was buddy-buddy with my ancestor, the same one who vowed to kill him, mind you.”

“I understand all that,” Sypha said, “But why hate his son? What has Alucard done to the humans? Why must you hate him?”

“I…” The hunter paused. “... don't.”

The speaker blinked, “You don't?”

Trevor blinked as well, as if he came to the realisation at the same moment as her. “No. I don't hate him.” He frowned at himself as he said it.

“Huh.” Was all Sypha could say.

Alucard listened to the conversation from behind a bookshelf. He knew that the other two were unaware of his presence, and though the dhampir didn't exactly wish to eavesdrop, he couldn't help himself. It was indeed a shock to hear that Belmont didn't hate him, it seemed like the acknowledgement was shocking to the hunter as well.

The dhampir decided to wait a bit before re-entering their little circle where Sypha and Trevor were already sitting, looking down at their bowls. Contemplating something in their own minds. Both looked up but didn't say anything when the dhampir approached and sat down again.

“This one next, then.” Sypha picked out another vial and repeated the previous steps.

This time, they looked to be about the same age but wore different attires. Leon wore a white and blue robe while Mathias wore a black and green robe.

They were sitting in a tavern-like place based on how people were drinking, though no one was completely drunk. Many men wearing similar attire to Leon were all around the tavern, laughing and talking loudly.

“Oh yeah, this is my kinda place.” Trevor grinned while Sypha rolled her eyes.

“Of course it is.” She said and a chuckle got her attention. Leon said something which made Mathias chuckle. They were both sitting side by side in a small booth and there was a map laid out in front of them on the table. The man with dark hair pointed at something on the map and smirked.

“What are they talking about?” Sypha said to herself and got near them. The two men followed so they could hear the conversation better as well.

“-and this is where the attack happened?” Mathias asked, amused.

“Oh yes!” Leon smiled cheekily, “I suppose Sir Higart wished to catch me off guard. Shame that his whole army was annihilated.”

“How did you manage that, I wonder?”

“What? I cannot fight an army on my own?” Leon asked, scoffing.

“No, you can. It is just… Higart’s army had over 100 men and you fought them alone.” Mathias said, “It is not that I underestimate you, no. But I am also aware of your abilities and restrictions. Tell me truthfully, Leon.” His voice lowered to a whisper, “have you had any outside help?”

“I suppose Leon has been quite strong from the start.” Alucard commented.

“Of course he has! He started the family and taught the first generation of Belmonts about hunting.” Trevor huffed, “You dare take him lightly?”

Alucard narrowed his eyes but didn't say anything else. Trevor seemed surprised at that and felt a little guilty, though his face didn't show it.

“Well…” Leon said, “I have this special sword. Blessed and it has a mind of its own, apparently it was in my family and now has been passed down to me.”

“That's quite interesting. I've never heard of this sword.” Trevor said with a frown.

“Since you turned 18 this year?” Mathias asked and the blond knight nodded. “Usually, heirlooms are given at 16. I assume they were planning on keeping it to themselves but felt pity later.” He scoffed.

“Mathias, you should not say that about the church men. They raised us, you know.”

“Raised us rather pitifully, you would agree.” Mathias replied.

“Dracula was raised in a church?” Sypha looked a little surprised.

“He was an orphan. Back then, the church would raise any and all the parentless children they could find, in hopes of converting everyone to God.” Alucard said.

“I-” Sypha started but was interrupted as Leon started speaking again.

“Don't say that.” Leon grumbled and looked away. Mathias glanced at him and sighed, he then smiled. “Fine, I will stop.”

“He actually listened.” Trevor said, voice faltering in surprise. The hunter glanced at the other two and saw that they looked surprised as well. He refused to believe that Dracula actually had good friendship with any of his ancestors, that Dracula could have been a potential family friend to him, had the vampire not betrayed them.

“Let us discuss more light hearted topics then, how are things with Sara?” Mathias's eyes sparkled, “I heard her family quite likes you.” Leon flushed at hearing that.

“Sara is his fiancee right?” Sypha asked Trevor, who nodded in confirmation. “Aww, that's sweet.”

“I am not sure what you're implying.” The blond glanced away, his cheeks darkening.

“You mean you don't like her?” Mathias faked surprise as he asked him.

“I-I do! But…it's not that.” Leon cleared his throat and glanced at the other man, who was sipping on his drink, facing forward. “Mathias…” He started.

“Hm?” He responded, staring ahead at the men playing poker. Leon’s eyes were focused on him with uncertainty for a second before he got interrupted. “I might have f-”

“I was planning on proposing to Elizabetha, you know.” Mathias looked down at his lap with a smile while Leon's eyes went wide.

“What was he trying to say?” Sypha squinted her eyes but didn't get a reply back.

“O-Oh.”

“What?” The man with long dark hair turned to him, “You do not think I should? Is it too early?”

“No but…” Leon pressed his lips together for a second before saying, “Must you?”

“What is going on? What does he mean?” Trevor looked increasingly confused by the second and Alucard frowned.

At hearing Leon's comment, Mathias fully turned to the knight. “Are you well? What do you mean?”

“It is…nothing.” Leon's frown slowly turned into a smile. “I think Elizabetha will be very delighted.”

“He's lying.” Sypha frowned. “I wonder what the reason could be.”

“Father can tell something is wrong.” Alucard said, glancing at Mathias's uncertain face.

“Don't call him father, it sounds weird.” Trevor muttered under his breath, though he agreed with the man.

“Alright.” The dark haired man smiled as well, “Glad to hear it. I will have a custom ring made."

Chapter Text

They uncapped another vial and invaded the memory. This time they were in a well decorated room, Mathias was sitting in between with lots of men all around, laughing and clapping him on his back.

“What's going on here?” Sypha questioned the two men standing beside her.

“Some sort of party I would guess.” Trevor answered with a shrug.

“And this toast to our greatest tactician ever! Who helped us win numerous battles, raise a glass for Mathias!” A man weeped, “Now getting married.”

Some of the men cheered and clinked their glasses in celebration. Trevor ‘oh’ed in understanding. “He said he was about to propose, I guess this skipped straight to his bachelor party.”

After a while, the crowd parted and settled in different sides of the room, drinking and laughing away. Mathias snorted and turned to Leon, who was sitting beside him, looking out of the window. “My wedding is just another excuse for them to get inebriated.” When the knight didn't respond, Mathias raised an eyebrow. “Leon?”

“Hm?” That snapped him out of his trance. “Oh yes, of course.”

“He seems…distracted.” Sypha frowned. “Why? I thought he'd be happy that his friend is getting married.”

“I don't even want to guess. There's just so much that I never expected.” The hunter sighed and glanced sideways at Alucard, whose expression didn't betray him.

“What's gotten into you?” Mathias chuckled, though his smile didn't reach his eyes. “You've been like this since this morning.”

“I-” Leon paused and sighed. “I'm happy for you.”

“Then why?-” Mathias frowned for a second before his eyebrows went up. “Perhaps you're upset that I'm getting married before you? Do not worry, I won't flaunt my wedding life.” He grinned.

Leon exhaled with a small laugh and grinned back. “Sure. I'll hold you to that.”

“Well that's clearly not the reason.” Sypha pouted, a little irritated that she couldn't find out the true reason as to why the knight was acting like that.

The tactician nodded and sipped his drink. Leon cleared his throat as he looked at the older man, then he opened and closed his mouth. Mathias noticed this and said, “Yes?”

“I have yet to give you your wedding gift.”

“It's a little odd to hear about my father's wedding when it's not with my mother.” Alucard muttered, finally speaking after a while. This immediately got the attention of his peers who looked at him.

“What?” Sypha blinked.

Before he could answer, Mathias laughed. “Wedding gift? What? We’ve been friends for 2 months?”

“It's not that…” Leon blushed and chuckled a little.

“I said it's weird that we're seeing my father's wedding when it's not with my mother.” The dhampir repeated himself for the speaker.

“Ahh. Makes sense.”

“It's weirder when you're calling him father, just so you know.” Trevor added and Sypha snorted.

“Leon.” Mathias said seriously and took the knight’s hand. “The fact you're here, as my best man while I'm marrying the woman I love? That's the best gift I could have.”

“I still can't believe they were best friends.” Sypha said and frowned a little. “And to think such a great friendship turned into such a rivalry…”

“Mathias, I…” He pressed his lips and then smiled. “I still wanted to give you this, so you could keep a part of me with you.”

“You'll always be with me though.” The dark haired man smiled back as well.

“The irony is almost painful.” Trevor sighed.

“Still,” The knight insisted and picked up a long box from the ground. “Here.”

“Woah.” The tactician’s eyes went wide for a second as he took the long box. “What is this? A sword?”

Leon huffed. “How did you know? That's not fair.”

“To be honest, what else would be in a long package?” Alucard shrugged.

“Well…” Mathias shrugged with a grin. “What else would one expect in a long package such as this?”

They blinked at the coincidence and looked back and forth between the ones with long hair. “Seems like you both still share similarities after all.” Sypha said, amused.

“I suppose so.” The dhampir said.

Leon scoffed and Mathias chuckled, unwrapping the box. He took the long sword out and unsheathed it, with a little difficulty.

“That's one long ass sword.” Trevor commented, whistling.

Mathias’s eyes widened as he looked at a sheepish Leon. “This is your heirloom.” He stated.

“Oh this is the sword they were talking about in the previous memory.” Sypha raised her eyebrows.

“Yes. And I want you to have it.” Leon said.

“Makes sense why none of the Belmonts heard about it. It's with my father.” Alucard said.

“Do not be absurd! It's yours.” Mathias shook his head.

“Didn't Leon say that the sword had magical properties?” Sypha asked rhetorically and the two men beside her either nodded or shrugged.

“And now I'm giving it to you.” Leon insisted.

“What would I even do with it?” Mathias scoffed. “I'm not a sword user.”

“That's true. Father doesn't use weaponry.” The dhampir attested to that while Trevor and Sypha seemed intrigued at what was happening.

At hearing that, Leon paused. Mathias blinked and slowly grinned. “Did you not think of that before giving me this?”

Sypha snorted and Trevor flushed in embarrassment for his ancestor.

“I-” Leon blushed. “Just have it! Don't be so difficult, I'm trying to be nice!”

“Fine I'll take it! But pray tell this,” Mathias said exasperatedly. “This is a sword with unique abilities that can assist countless battles and doesn't rust, ever. Yet I cannot and do not use swords. What exactly should I do with this?”

The trio frowned at hearing that. All for different reasons.

“I don't know!” Leon threw his hands up in the air in frustration. “Pass it down to your first born or something! You can't return a present.”

Alucard and Trevor looked shocked while Sypha laughed in surprise. “Hold on a second-” Before she could say anything, Mathias interrupted her with a sigh.

Fine, God. You're really persistent.” The tactician shook his head. “I swear if I have a son, I shall give this sword to him.”

The background swirled and they were back, gasping as they took their faces out of the bowls. The first thing Sypha did was turn to Alucard. “Unsheath your sword.” She ordered and he didn't wait a second in doing so, as if he was about to do it anyway.

All three gaped. That was the sword!

“I thought it looked familiar!” Alucard exclaimed.

“I can't believe it…” Trevor sputtered. “My ancestor’s sword is with you?”

The dhampir glared at the hunter. “Just what exactly is that supposed to imply?”

“No I didn't say-” Trevor ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. “It's unexpected, is all.”

“The memory isn't over!” Sypha said excitedly. “I just got us back to find out if what I suspected was true or not.”

“Seems like your father at least keeps some promises.” The Belmont commented and Alucard absently nodded, trying to remember when his father gave him the sword. He was fairly young, he concluded.

“Let's go again.” Sypha exclaimed and face planted into the bowl.

“Chill, woman.” Trevor snorted and followed suit, glancing at the dhampir for him to do the same.

They were back at where they ended, everyone was at the same spot and Leon and Mathias were talking again. The knight said, “It's blessed, did you know?”

“How can you carry it if it's blessed?” Sypha asked her blond companion curiously who shrugged in response. He wasn't aware of any of it.

“Really?” Mathias made an impressed face. “Is that why you said it has a mind of its own?”

“It does?” Trevor questioned, “I thought it was metaphorical.”

“No, it certainly does.” Alucard gave a singular nod. He felt a little awkward, if he was being completely honest. Being the centre of attention was annoying and tiring.

“Kind of.” Leon half shrugged, “See, I did a few experiments on this, letting some… ‘disloyal’ members of the troop use this. The letter father left said it can only be held by someone pure of heart and soul.”

The attention fell on Alucard again, who looked away so his reddened cheeks couldn't be seen. Sypha smiled and gave a ‘see?’ look to Trevor, who looked a little uncomfortable. Only a little.

“So what happened to the ‘disloyal' troops?” The tactician questioned.

“Their hands were burned upon wielding the sword.” Leon grimaced as he said so, recalling the memory.

The trio were shocked at hearing this, Alucard felt a little overwhelmed. He wasn't pure hearted! How come wielding the sword never hurt him? Sypha, as usual, was the first to recover. “Alucard.” She called his attention towards her.

“Your father gave you this sword then, yes?” The memory swirled back on its own this time and they were back on the floor of the Belmont hold.

The dhampir nodded at the Speaker's question, who beamed at the answer. “That means your father believes that you have a pure heart and soul.” She added, “So do I!”

Trevor was quiet but he nodded as well, barely. Alucard's eyes widened at that, he glanced away and blinked a few times. He couldn't cry, he was a warrior now!

The memories of his father placing a kiss on his forehead and swinging him around as a child flooded his brain. His mother's head shaking in fondness was burned into his cornea.

The dhampir took a deep breath and placed a hand over his face. “Thank you, both of you.” He muffled out.

Sypha gave a sympathetic look and nodded. “We can take a little break if you want.” She then turned to the Belmont who was looking increasingly more uneasy as time went by. “You can distribute the next vial.” She told him.

It took a while but they were back again, invading yet another memory of Leon Belmont.

They were inside a church this time, the first few rows of seats were filled with people, the rest were empty. On the altar, Mattias and a blonde woman stood, face to face. The woman had her long hair in a bun and she wore a white and yellow wedding dress.

“Woah.” Sypha exclaimed.

“Indeed.” Alucard said with narrowed eyes and approached the couple as the officiant spoke. Leon was standing beside Mattias while another black haired woman with a yellow dress was standing beside—who they assumed was—Elizabetha.

“What's wrong?” Trevor asked the dhampir who blinked.

“She…uh.” He paused and glanced at her again, “Sort of looks like my mother.” At both his companion’s confused looks, he added, “Their faces are different but their features are the same.”

“Huh.” Both Sypha and Trevor said at the same time.

The hunter’s eyes squinted as well, glancing at Elizabetha and then Alucard. “She kind of looks like you too…” he then shook his head. “Actually, nevermind.”

The officiant said loudly, getting their attention. “The groom shall now say his vows.”

Mathias smiled, taking his bride's hands and starting to say, “Elizabetha, when I first saw you…”

“Ugh, lame.” Trevor scoffed and Alucard glared at him, though he was not exactly happy with what was happening.

Before anyone could continue, Leon excused himself with a cough and walked off the altar. The trio’s eyebrows raised in surprise. The attendants were looking around amongst themselves as well, confused. Mathias frowned at that, pausing his vows.

The woman next to Elizabetha put down her bouquet of flowers and followed the knight, saying, “I shall check on him. Keep going!”

“Thank you, Sara.” The bride muttered as Sara left as well.

“Oh that's Leon's fiancee.” Trevor said and followed her. Alucard and Sypha looked at each other with amusement before doing the same thing. They could hear Mathias starting to speak again, this time his voice laced with hesitancy.

Leon and Sara walked out the door, the trio following them quickly. Leon was panting and leaned against a wall as he placed a hand over his face.

“What is up with him?”

“He was behaving strangely since Fath- Mathias said he was going to propose to Lady Elizabetha.” Alucard corrected himself and pointed out.

“You're right. He was acting oddly during the bachelor's party as well.” Trevor nodded, agreeing with the dhampir. “But why?”

“Guess we'll find out.”

“Leon,” Sara placed a hand on his shoulder, “Breath. What is the matter?”

The knight did so a few times before standing up straight. “I think I'm going to faint.” He did look a little pale.

The trio frowned in worry.

“No no no no, Leon.” Sara grabbed both sides of his face and said, “Our friends need us there, we're the only best man and bridesmaid because they wanted this to be special, right?” When the knight refused to meet her eyes, she shook him one time. “Leon! This is the best day of their life and you cannot ruin this.”

“No but-” He started.

No buts!” She snapped. “We talked about this. You're acting absurdly, Leon! You specifically asked me to stop you from doing this.” Her eyes turned kind, “You'll hate yourself if you do this today.”

“Do what?” Sypha was invested in all ways. She had no idea what was happening but she was ready for it.

“Clearly, Sara knows something.” Alucard said under his breath.

“They're making a mistake! I must stop him!” Leon exclaimed.

Trevor, Alucard and Sypha gaped. Leon was planning on objecting to the wedding?

“B-but…why would he do that? Mathias is his best friend.” Her companions didn't have an answer. Or rather, they didn't want to guess.

“Sara, let me-” Leon freed himself from the woman, albeit with a little difficulty. “-go!”

“No! Leo-” She tried to stop him but it was too late. He burst through the church’s doors and ran inside. Sara, Sypha, Trevor and Alucard ran too.

The people looked back at the knight who was panting. “I object.” He said.

The crowd gasped in shock while Mathias and Elizabetha stared at him in disbelief. “What?” The tactician questioned.

“Just-” The knight sighed and turned towards the people sitting. “Could we have some privacy?” Most of the people took the hint and started getting up to leave. “Thank you, yes, thank you.” Some guests gave him a suspicion stare, to which he snapped, “No I'm not cheating with the bride, Linda. Get out.” Leon turned to his best friend while pointing at Linda. “Who even invited her here?”

Sypha snorted, even in a serious situation. At Alucard’s eyebrow raise, she said, “What? He's funny.”

When Mathias gave him a specific look, Leon shook his head and said, “Nevermind her, I'm here to say that i-” he paused and looked at the officiant who was still there. “Would you mind?”

The priest looked offended but still left, mumbling about something.

“That's the best way of saying ‘fuck off’ that I've heard.” Trevor grinned.

“I think we have more weighty concerns for now, Belmont.” Alucard sighed.

“Leon, please.” The tactician let go of his bride's hands and turned to the man, taking a step down the altar. “What is this?”

“Mathias.” Leon sighed deeply. “I love you.”

“WHAT.” Trevor and Alucard screamed.

“Calm down! It's a brotherly thing!” Sypha scoffed and scolded them.

At Elizabetha’s eyebrow raise, Mathias chuckled nervously and smiled. “I-I well, you didn't have to send everyone away for that! I also love you. You're my best friend-”

Sypha made a ‘see?’ gesture which was cut off by Leon himself. “No no, I love you.”

She paled at hearing that and slowly turned towards her two companions, who looked like they had died, gone to hell and then died again. She turned back towards the drama, but not before hearing a faint “what the fuck” from one of his companions. And it was not from the one she expected.

Both Mathias's and Elizabetha’s eyes were wide, unsure of what to say next. “Leon, I-”

“Let me finish.” The knight cut him off, “I love you, and I have since we were kids. I know this isn't the best time but there is no better time, I can't…I had to tell you.” He said. “You've always been saying how I'm the closest to you, how you love me too. But here you are now marrying Elizabetha. I need to know how to really feel.”

“Fuck…” Trevor picked his jaw up from the floor to say. Leon had feelings for Dracula? He wanted to ask the man desperately but at last, it was a memory that he was viewing.

Mathias opened his mouth to say something but his attention was directed behind the trio. They all looked behind to see Sara hunched over herself. “Sara? Are you well?”

The woman’s head shot up as she grinned maniacally. “What? Me? Yeah! I'm great!” At their unconvinced look, she added, her smile suddenly gone. “What about me?!”

The trio were startled out of their shock at that. Sara continued, “It's always about Mathias!”

The tactician scoffed. “It's my wedding!”

She ignored that and turned to Leon. “He doesn't deserve you, no offence.”

“Doesn't deserve me?” Mathias said incredulously. “I was there when his dad died! Were you?” He accused her. “That's right! We served in battles together and have been by each other's sides for as long as I can remember!”

“You don't love him! You love Elizabetha!”

“As if we can't love both!” Mathias exclaimed and Elizabetha and Leon's eyes went wide again. “I know how you look at both Eliza and Leon, Sara.”

What is happening?” Sypha said incredulously, trying hard to process what she was seeing.

“Like how you look at them?”

“Yes. I admit it then, I love them both. How about you?” Mathias raised his nose.

Both?” Alucard sputtered. “Wha-”

“Sara…” The bride finally spoke. “I didn't…I didn't think that the time during their campaign meant anything. I meant I wanted it to be something, but didn't think you would return my feelings.”

“WOAH!” Trevor raised his hands, as if trying to stop everything from happening.

“What campaign? The one Mathias and I attended?” Leon spoke.

“Yes.” Elizabetha swallowed and nodded.

“Mathias…tell me clearly,” The knight turned to his tactician. “Do you love me?”

Trevor and Alucard flinched at the word.

The dark haired man ran his fingers through his hair and sighed, “Of course I…love you.” He hesitated before saying.

“But you love Elizabetha too?” Leon asked sceptically.

“Do you also not love Sara?”

The blond knight paused for a beat before nodding, “Yes, I do.”

“You do?” Sara placed a hand on his arm. “Truly?”

“God, what is happening?” Trevor said pitifully.

“If only I knew…” Sypha grimaced.

“Very well, I'm glad this misunderstanding has been sorted. Obviously, all four of us hold affection for more than one person here.” Elizabetha smiled as she said, “However, it would still be considered blasphemy by our church.” As she said that, Leon looked down with a little shame. “I think it would be best if we were to continue this wedding. And as for our personal affections…that can be sorted privately.”

“As smart as always, Eliza.” Mathias smiled with pride and took her hands as he turned to face her as well.

“I…shall call the officiant back then.” Sara said and rubbed Leon's back, who nodded as well.

The memory swirled and the trio were back. Well, mostly. Alucard had to be forcefully yanked out of the bowl because he was frozen. It was going to be a long time until they got over it. Also one hell of a conversation.

Notes:

Woo! This chapter was a rollercoaster to write. And yes I do know that the sword actually is Lisa's heirloom but I wanted to add another twist lmao

Anyway, what conversation do y'all think the trio will be having over this?
